Velveeta Cheese – The Story of Velveeta Cheese

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, Velveeta Cheese is a pasteurized cheese spread that has been processed. It was introduced in 1918 by the Monroe Cheese Company in New York.

A young employee there named Emil Frey was looking for a way to get rid of the excess whey. This was a waste product from the process of making cheese. One day some of the cheese accidentally mixed with the whey. The result was a very smooth and creamy cheese so it was named Velveeta. While it later became a best selling product, Frey almost didn’t share his discovery with others for fear of getting into trouble at work.

The popularity of the Velveeta product caught on very fast. It seemed like overnight all the different cheese companies out there were fighting to market it. Kraft Foods simply bought the rights to it by paying off the other manufacturers. In 1927 they became the proud owner or Velveeta Cheese. The amount of money they paid for this right has never been disclosed.

Today this creamy cheese mixture is sold all over the United States and in Canada. They have expanded the product over the years to offer a variety of sizes and flavorings. A favorite we still enjoy today was introduced in 1984 – Kraft macaroni and cheese featuring Velveeta cheese. Cheese slices followed soon afterwards. By 1990 there were several versions of Velveeta cheese products that could be placed in the microwave. A cheese salsa dip was introduced in 2003.

The secret recipe for Velveeta Cheese is carefully guarded by the company. Some people claim it offers less cheese than it did in the past. However most people agree on one thing – Velveeta Cheese spread is delicious! You can find it sold in most grocery stores around America. There is plenty of variety available too so you can always find the right Velveeta Cheese product for any recipe.
