Now that you have decided to buy a Leopard gecko as a pet, what are the best leopard gecko foods available to feed them?  Since your new pet is an insectivore, the obvious choice is going to be insects.  Which insects offer the most nutritional value for your Leo but also do not cost you an arm and a leg to buy?  Four different insects come to mind when thinking about different Leopard gecko foods.  They are crickets, meal worms, locusts, and wax worms.  Sounds yummy doesn’t it?

The Cricket

Crickets are the best choice in feeding your Leo because they are readily available and provide a very nutritious meal.  There are many different kinds of crickets to choose from.  A few different types of crickets you could feed your pet are: Brown crickets, Black crickets, or Banded crickets. Each of these types of crickets are high in protein and fat that provides excellent nutritional value. I would only recommend using crickets bought from a store because wild crickets might be covered with insecticides or fertilizers which will cause your reptile to become ill.

Meal Worms

This is my second choice for leopard gecko foods that are high in nutritional value.  Meal worms are readily available and provide a nice fatty snack for your pet. Meal worms were the number one food for these reptile until crickets become more popular.  Still today, many breeders will only feed their offspring meal worms because of they are easy for young ones to eat and provide excellent nutrition.

Locusts

Locusts are a sweet treat for your Leo.  Locusts being on the more expensive side of leopard gecko foods, along with crickets and meal worms, they are more of a delicacy.  Locusts are high in protein which is great if you want to fatten up your pet, but when given as the sole food in their diet, you pet becomes kind of “addicted” to thee treats.  If you decide to feed your reptile locusts, make sure to only feed it once every ten days so that it will still eat its healthy foods.

Wax Worms

Can you say fatty. Feeding your pet wax worms is like feeding your child a Twinkie. These worms are so filled with fat that once eaten, your pet will quickly become addicted to the taste and want nothing else if given to many. Save these as a special treat to show your Leo how much you love them!
