The Trust Manifesto

For far too long, our economy and culture have been decayed by the cancer that is mass marketing. The marketing industry has over time lost respect for its role as the guardian of the relationship between a company and its customers. A practice once based in earning and protecting trust has eroded into the habit of obtaining the most promotion for the least amount of effort. Marketing no longer sees people but rather numbers and dollars.

Simultaneously, just as marketing has dissociated the human element from its public, the industry has likewise stripped the lifeblood of creativity away from the artist. As this trend has continued unabated, innovation, inspiration and passion for the craft, once entrusted to the artist, have been sacrificed in the quest for easy gain. As we enter an age in which the methods of communication have been revolutionized, the old systems of mass marketing have been rendered ineffectual. In a marketplace founded by, built by and existing for the people, trust is the only fundamental currency. Therefore, the following maxims are hereby set forth as necessary elements to earning and keeping trust in the marketplace:

  1. All must be rooted in building trust. Any and all resources dedicated to the promotion of business must directly or indirectly be founded in trust. There are no shortcuts to developing an authentic relationship between company and customer.
  2. Earned trust is the result of a personal investment. Customers must be seen as people, not statistics.
  3. Passion for the work comes first. For marketers, the quality of work supersedes all measure of profit. The task of building trust demands time, money and sacrifice.
  4. Creativity is not a fixed commodity. Creative ideas are the foundation of good marketing. As such, an ongoing investment must be made in cultivating an environment that breeds creativity.
  5. The artist must be respected. Artists are the architects and guardians of trust. Marketing must respect its designers, writers, illustrators, photographers, engineers and all that create the element of trust.
  6. Nothing must come between the artist and the client. Companies must have direct access to the artists that are charged with forging trust. Likewise artists must be able to engage in clear and open communication.
  7. Only one owns the spirit of the work. While there may be many involved in the process, one person must assume ownership of the task. Creativity by committee will always fail.
  8. The marketing firm that adheres to the principles of building trust must always defend and protect its own industry from practices that remove the human element from the marketplace. All entities in the business of earning trust are obligated to illuminate what is wrong and fight for what is right.

How To Build Trust In Dating, Courtship and Marriage Relationships

Trust is one of the elements of the foundation for joyful relationships. It is fortuitously placed in the fifth position in the hierarchy of pillars to be hoisted before and while building a relationship. Building trust is fundamental to the development, growth and sustenance of a joyful relationship. Many relationships out there lack trust and those involved are dealing with an uphill task. When trust is broken by the indiscretion or untrustworthiness of a partner, it creates serious complication in the relationship.

Here are some techniques you can use with proven guarantee to grow your connectedness by improving the level of trust in your relationship:

• Communicate needs – Convey without fear or restraint your needs to your partner. Do not create room for your spouse or partner to begin to guess what it is you want or expect. Let him or her know and directly from you. Without worrying about being termed selfish, make your claims on the relationship. When you do not get what you want from a relationship – whether or not you asked – it would arouse resentment and ultimately create emotional problems. In addition, failure to affirm your needs may result in your seeking for satisfaction and assurances from elsewhere which might be stifling to the relationship.

• Learn to disagree – Having your partner communicate his or her needs effectively is good for the relationship. However, you do not need to agree with everything. If you are in the habit of saying yes to everything your partner asks for, you lose respect. People erroneously feel that allowing the other partner or being allowed by a partner get everything asked for is a sign of love. One, it is not a sign of love. Two, allowing you to be dominated by the other partner kills trust on both parties. If you do not agree with a proposal, disagree. Both parties to relationship should develop the strength of character to disagree when a request or proposal is not right. Consider the need for this mindset when a partner demands or desires premarital sex. If you give in to such a demand, you lose respect and most often, the relationship.

• Predictability – There is a time for everything. While it praiseworthy for ladies to be mysterious at the onset of a dating relationship, however, as the relationship grows into steady dating, courtship and marriage, predictability becomes superior to surprises. Surprises are good to spice up a relationship such as in giving unexpected gifts. Nevertheless, we need to be consistent and reliable so as to make our relationship to grow. We have to be dependable to be trusted, hence predictability is key here.

• Honesty – Do not keep secrets from your partner. Consider that nothing is hidden under heaven. It will eventually be out in the open sooner than later. Secrets are destructive to trust in a relationship. Secrets are like lies, it requires a lie to cover a lie and if you start covering, each lie would require another to cover it. That would be a vicious circle. The time and energy you need to keep a secret if invested in building the relationship would give it power to produce joy and peace for you. Honesty is the best policy any day.

• Harmonize message – Make certain that your words and their meaning are in harmony. Hearing your words harmonizing with your body language is reassuring to your partner. You should not be frowning when you say that you are happy. Like children, your partner hears what you say with their eyes. Remember the saying what you are doing is so loud I cannot hear what you are saying. Your partner should not need an interpreter to trust your words. Your face and tone should match with words you speak. Trust is built in a relationship when you say what you mean and mean what you say.

An Investment You Can Trust

Company leaders must constantly evaluate the ROI on system-wide programs and initiatives. Things that were once considered simply a good business practice, like community and philanthropic involvement, are today considered an investment. After all, in business, what is more valuable than your time and money? Yet, community involvement remains one investment whose power can never be underestimated. True involvement in charitable programs is still one of the easiest methods to increase corporate awareness, recruit and retain employees, and give back to the community that supports you.

Common sense dictates that philanthropic involvement is a feel-good, easy way to positively position your company with shareholders, investors, customers and employees. Not only does your involvement improve your image with those who have a vested interest, but it is also a good way to generate positive media coverage for your company.

More importantly, community involvement can do wonders for employee morale which can lead to higher productivity and a team-focused, enjoyable work environment. In addition, coming together for a common cause promotes teamwork and the desire to learn new skills and practices. Many companies use workplace philanthropic programs to retain their employees and even recruit new ones. Job-seekers are often attracted to companies that give back to their communities, and allow personal time away from the office for volunteering. In fact, 58% of companies use their employee volunteer programs for recruiting and retaining employees, according to the Corporate Volunteer Program as a Strategic Resource.

Your involvement doesn’t just benefit your company and employees, ultimately, the organization in which you are supporting has a better success rate because of your goodwill and generosity – you have opened the doors for them to get their message out. In addition, your company’s involvement may have helped them reach their own goals, whether it’s increasing their volunteer base, community support or in-kind and/or monetary donations.

Obviously donating corporate time and money to community involvement is a win-win situation, however there are literally hundreds of credible organizations in your community that want and need your support. How do you choose the right one for your business? Nearly 82% of corporations focus their employee volunteer programs on core business functions. (i.e.: those in the real estate business start out with programs such as Habitat for Humanity). In addition, programs that are directly related to the community in which you are based, or programs that are universal to all businesses and lifestyles, are also great places to start looking. The good thing is that any non-profit you choose to support will be appreciative and eager for your involvement.

It may sound cliché but getting your employees and company name out into the community can be one way to achieve your corporate mission. It allows everyone – your company, employees, and the community itself – to win. But just remember that with community involvement, just like with the many important things in life, you get out of it what you put into it.

How To Trust Again

I received the following question about how to trust again:

“My husband and I remarried after we both got divorced and went through a number of relationships. I have been hurt a lot but tried to end all the relationships in peace so when I met my husband I felt alive and saw him as my right great man. And he is actually great in many ways. But when I found some of his communications with his ex wife and ex-girl friends, I found that he lied to them a lot. And sometimes he lied to me also. I know our relationship is sort of controlling-resistance. I am trying to control and he is trying to resist. And I told him that I do not trust him or respect him any more for all he has done to other women and me. Because he lied, I felt like I have the right to judge him and to make him feel guilty for what he has done to me and other women. Then he told me that he felt so bad about himself and that he is as bad as what I told him. I feel it is his problem and I cannot respect a man who is not responsible for what he is doing. I’ve gotten very angry many times and scolded him and called him names. I know I should not have done that but I have lost trust in him. Through the Inner Bonding process I am trying to get myself back and get my love and respect and trust back for him. My question is how I can restore all these? And how can I trust that I will not be his victim in the future?”

And another question about how to trust again, from a different woman:

“Being forthright, honest and loyal are important attributes for myself and in others. Once the ‘bridge of trust”‘ has been burned significantly (i.e. infidelity in marriage or an intimate relationship), can trust be truly re-established when it seems to be more important to one partner? How does the one betrayed respond when the other is apologetic but thinks an apology is enough? How do you prevent this feeling of distrust from affecting future relationships?”

Learning to trust again requires work on two levels:

1. The first thing that needs to be done is your own inner work. You need to do enough Inner Bonding to become a trustworthy loving adult for your own inner child. This means:

  • Accepting that you have no control over whether or not someone betrays you again, and letting go of trying to control the other person.
  • Fully grieving the loss of trust.
  • Learning to trust your own inner knowing. As you develop your trust in your feelings and your Guidance, you are more equipped to sense a lack of integrity in others.
  • Becoming willing to lose the other person rather than lose yourself.
  • Becoming willing to take whatever loving actions you need to take on your own behalf.

2. The second level of work in learning how to trust again is relationship work:

  • Both you and your partner need to attend couples counseling to fully understand your relationship system. Lying is often the result of one person trying to control and the other resisting or fearing honesty. Both partners need to do the work of healing old fears and beliefs and developing a trustworthy loving adult inside, who can be honest rather than deceitful. You can never trust that the other person won’t lie or be unfaithful if your own inner healing work isn’t a priority.

  • Apologies are never enough. Apologies don’t mean anything without the inner work to heal the underlying fears and false beliefs that led to lying or being unfaithful.

It is unrealistic to trust again without this inner and relationship work. The wounded self in all of us isn’t trustworthy and can act out in very hurtful ways when there isn’t a strong loving adult in charge of our actions. For trust to flourish in your relationship, both of you need to become trustworthy loving adults with yourselves and with each other.

When Coping With The Death Of A Loved One Trust Mystery And The Unseen

Loss and change are conditions of existence. They begin at birth with the massive change of leaving the cozy womb to be thrust into the physical world, and they end with the final change: death. In between, many little deaths and many big deaths take place that are stressful and demanding to survivors and call for the establishment of new routines, the development of new coping skills, and often new roles.

Regrettably, we have to learn how to manage our losses through experience because we are a death denying culture and there are few, if any, schools that teach that life involves many loss experiences or how we should cope with them when they occur. Nevertheless, no one is immune from the condition of having something taken away that is cherished.

So what do we learn from experiencing loss? If we are lucky, we are told by those who have been through many changes and much grief that it is alright to express emotion, that crying is good for the soul as well as the body, and time heals all wounds. However, time only heals when you work at healing your inner turmoil minute by minute and hour by hour. It isn’t an automatic process of simply waiting it out.

Interestingly, no one ever tells us to expect and trust mystery and the unseen to intervene. And yet, many things happen unexpectedly that ease the pain of loss. Here are some common examples.

● You intuitively sense the presence of your deceased loved one.

● A rainbow occurs on a dark day with a message of hope.

● A phone call comes from an old friend at your darkest hour.

●You hear a song whose lyrics spark an idea on dealing with your loss.

● From out of nowhere a thought pops into your mind providing great comfort and the realization that your loved one is in a good place.

● You’re alone driving on the freeway and ask for a sign that your loved one is okay on the other side, and a car passes you, pulls ahead, turns into your lane with a vanity license plate that reads BELIEVE.

● You continue to find pennies in odd places inside and outside of your home.

The list can go on and on.

The point: mystery in the form of unexpected help is always out there. Look for–be sure to ask for–positive signs even as you use tried and tested strategies for coping with the death of a loved one. They will show up. I tell every bereaved person that there is nothing wrong with praying for a sign that your loved one is okay. And there is nothing wrong in asking for their help. Also, don’t be fearful about joining a support group (it is not a sign of weakness) and/or coming to the realization that the death of a loved one means starting a new life.

Regardless of your belief system, unexpected signs always come if you are open to them. As a man in one of my support groups put it, “Believe that your loved one knows what you are going through.” And that belief will open you to the inexplicable and the wisdom it possesses. The key is positive expectation.

These signs and messages suggest that there is a power greater than the self seeking to help, that you are not alone, and that you will get through this difficult time. Refuse to cling to and have faith in beliefs that interfere with healing and accepting inevitable change (like this shouldn’t have happened to me or I can’t ever be joyful again). Pain is always a teacher, a sign to take a new road in life and sometimes to dump old beliefs that were hoisted on us by well-meaning adults in our younger years.

There is an unchartable order in the universe, often ignored, that comes through to stimulate the acceptance of loss and the changes it imposes. Allow mystery and the unseen to become another resource for coping with your loss. Expect your share of insights. Death never has the final word.

Can You Trust Your Doctor?

After horrific stories like the Harold Shipman case where he murdered many of his patients, how do you still allow yourself to trust your doctor? Maybe an extreme example but the fact is that many people don’t trust their doctor. They avoid going to hospital or to their local surgery, not necessarily because they are worried about being murdered but because they are scared of their own bodies, scared of what that lump on their head might actually be and scared of dealing with their own problems.

This is a dangerous fear to have as you may be putting your life at risk by avoiding the doctor. Here is some information to help you trust your doctor:

Training

Every doctor, no matter what stage they are at in their career has been through a lot of schooling and training and examples and practical tests and done work experience and shadowed doctors and proven their skills before they are allowed anywhere near you. Even then they are normally shadowed themselves by senior doctors for a long time until they have proven to be trustworthy and proficient enough to do things on their own. If senior doctors can trust your doctor then so should you, especially when they have had to work so hard to get where they are.

Technology

Often these days you don’t have to just trust your doctors opinions on something, there is a scientific test or technology solution that they can use to prove to you what the problem is and to back up their diagnosis enough so that you are happy to trust their cure.

Temps

Some patients may be alarmed to hear that a lot of doctors working today are in fact temps. They are normally called a ‘locum’. The thought that someone operating on your heart or giving you intravenous drugs could well be here just for a day may well be a bit scary, especially if your experience of temps is spotty stoner office juniors who do their job with their eyes closed. In the medical world this image could not be further from the truth. Locum jobs are highly desirable in the medical professions as they are often better paid than regular doctors and offer the doctor the opportunity to travel more. The fact is those in locum physiotherapy jobs probably has more experience in more situations than your regular full time physiotherapist.

At the end of the day though you need to see a doctor from time to time so better just get over your fear as soon as you can before it is too late.

Protect Your Disabled Loved One With A Special Needs Trust

As you get older, you may be aware that your adult child who is disabled or unable to work and receives SSI or Medicaid benefits, may never be able to take care of him/herself. A concerned parent should be aware that there are ways to protect that disabled child for his/her lifetime and not endanger the child’s government benefits. The best way is to create a SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST.

A Special Needs Trust (SNT) can be created from the child’s own money – such as an inheritance, an insurance payout, or a personal injury settlement — or the money of a third party. This trust created from the individual’s own funds is more expensive because it must be approved by the court. The easiest and least expensive SNT to make is when a parent or grandparent or other third party pays for the trust and contributes a sum of money for the benefit of the disabled person, who is known as the beneficiary.

One of my clients had a brother who, at 45, was unable to hold a job due to severe COPD. The brother received SSI and Medi-Cal but had very little money for anything beyond basic necessities. The sister wanted to contribute $100,000 for her brother’s lifetime special needs. She paid for the trust and named her other brother as trustee. The trustee set up a bank account in the name of the trust and used the funds to pay for disabled brother’s needs, above and beyond his room and board, which are the only things covered by government benefits.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST?

· An SNT ensures that a disabled person with assets over $2000 will still qualify to receive SSI, Medi-Cal and other government assistance necessary for their health and well-being.

· An SNT gives peace of mind to parents that their disabled child will be taken care of when they are no longer physically able to provide the care.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF A SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST?

· A diligent trustee must be appointed who must handle all the money in the trust. The trustee’s job and could last a long time – for the entire lifetime of the disabled person.

· The beneficiary may never receive cash from the trust – only items for his/her special needs, such as medical and dental expenses, medical equipment, training and education, insurance, transportation, entertainment, even vacations, automobiles, real property, modifications to accommodate the disability and other items to improve the quality of life. The trustee pays for everything and the beneficiary receives what the trust has paid for.

· Most disabled persons want to handle their own money and must be convinced that this would disqualify them from receiving government benefits.

· Special care must be taken about distributions if the beneficiary is on Section 8 housing.

I f you have a child who will need outside assistance for the rest of his or her life, see an attorney sooner rather than later to discuss the possibilities of setting up a Special Needs Trust. You’ll sleep a lot better once the action has been taken.

Estate Planning: Why Do I Need a Will If I Have a Trust?

If you’ve spent any time at all talking about estate planning, you’ve probably wondered why you would need a Will if you have a Trust. That is a common question. Before we explore the answer, let’s review some basic differences between the two.

Most people are familiar with a Will (or “Last Will and Testament” to be fully formal), but many do not really know what a “Trust” is. Think of a Trust as being a special box into which you place your assets (bank accounts, stocks, your home, rental properties, etc.) The person you appoint to take care of the box is called the “Trustee”. This person is NOT the “Executor”. An Executor is appointed in a Will, approved by a court, and only has authority after you die. A Trustee generally does not need court approval, and can handle things during your lifetime and after your death. This is why it is sometimes called a “living” Trust.

There are many differences between a Will and a Trust, but the most basic differences are:

  • A Will only takes effect when you die, but a Trust can be operative both during your lifetime and after your death.
  • Property given to someone under a Will must be distributed to them outright, with no strings attached. Property given under a Trust can be given outright, or it can remain in Trust and be supervised by the Trustee. It is possible to setup a Trust through a Will, but the result is still a Trust.
  • There is more potential to reduce your estate taxes if you use a Trust rather than a Will.
  • A Trust allows you to better protect your heirs from creditors, divorce, and other relatives (or step-relatives).
  • Property given under a Will must go through the Probate Court. That process is very expensive in California, it is time consuming, and it is very public. A Trust does not have to go through the Probate Court, can remain a private matter, the expenses of probate can be avoided, and the decedent’s final affairs can be handled quickly.

For most people, having a Trust is well worth the expense of setting one up — a cost which is, by the way, generally far less expensive than a probate. It is customary (though not required) to name the same person as Trustee and as Executor, so that control of both Trust and non-Trust assets are centralized in one person.

So, why do you need both? Having a Will even if you have a Trust is like having a safety net. It is very common for people to accidentally leave something out of their Trust. The family home is a good example. People buy a new home, or refinance the existing one, and forget to title the property back to their Trust when they are finished. When the person dies, the house is not part of the Trust, so “who gets it” is decided by the Will. Ideally, the Will states that all assets pass to the Trust. This way, final distribution of assets still follows the plan laid out in the Trust. Without a Will, the State will decide who gets any assets that are not in the Trust. That may or may not be the people you wanted to have that property.

A good estate plan will always include a Will, even if it has a Trust. Regardless whether you decide to have one or both, you should always get help from a lawyer. In the long run, do it yourself estate planning usually results in more expense and unintended consequences.

Trust – Playing Detective And Relationships

People with trust issues are usually those who have history of a pained childhood. Firstly, these are those children who experience childhood trauma like sexual abuse, get victim to domestic violence, neglect, loss or bereavement usually grow up with emotional numbing. They feel only a few emotions like boredom or frustrations, disgust or self-loathing. They are sensitive to criticism and quick to get angry. They often suppress disappointments until anger explodes. Children who have undergone grief in their tender age also have trust issues. Children cope with grief in their own way, some are in a state of denial & depression and some in anger or acceptance. Prolonged grief lasts for months or years. Without help and support, this type of grief leads to isolation and chronic loneliness.

Secondly, hereditary and environmental factors also play their role. Some children are genetically affected while negative environment and toxic relationships affect some of them. These children need a helping hand to come out of their reckless thoughts. Staying trustworthy to them, helping them come out of their mistrust and suspicion is all that they need. Trust is more important than love for a relationship to work. Lack of trust in early stage is indicative of an unstable relationship. Love and honesty cements relationships. When two people are in serious relationship, it means they are in intimacy with each other.

These children who are sexually abused or are grief striken have not experienced love & intimacy in their life. Intimacy requires emotions & lack of it in them leads to difficult personal relationships. Such children grow up with paranoid personality disorders. According to research paranoid personality disorder is also hereditary. Paranoid personality disorder is mostly diagnosed in adulthood. Relationships get affected when the person having paranoid personality disorder plays detective every time he has to trust his partner. This gets annoying and makes relationships not only stressful but toxic. Dominance characterizes a toxic relationship. Insecurity, being self-centered and control is damaging for both the partners

It is trust that helps to build partnerships, bonds or marriages. It is not impossible to stay in relationship with people suffering from this mental illness but they do need treatment and monitoring. The problem is that many people with this disorder do not seek treatment. With professional care and therapy, both partners in a relationship learn to bring compassion and understanding among them in a positive way. They need therapy so that they can clearly view the error. They learn to recognize and understand their mistaken perceptions of suspicion, pessimism, stubbornness and controlling behaviour. Thus making correction easier. They should visit a doctor when they feel stressed up, negative or try to live in isolation. Patients suffering from paranoid personality disorder ought to get clinically diagnosed and treated.

By assessing their history and symptoms the clinicians and therapists help them to improve. They urge them to interact with others and lead a healthy social life. Mental health care centres are the best place for treatment. Cognitive behavioural therapy under an expert therapist helps patients become more aware of their disordered thought process. It helps to redirect their thoughts towards improvement. Both the partners are treated individually. Both of them need to care for one another and develop positive habits. Neglect will lead to their paranoia becoming a reality

With individual therapy, couple therapy, cognitive therapy, dialectical therapy, family therapy and support of professional clinicians, therapists and counselors patient with paranoid personality disorder show effective improvement. They undergo comprehensive psychological testing to develop improved emotional and cognitive functioning. The most recommended treatment for paranoid personality disorder is psychotherapy though antipsychotic medicines are given for a short period. Family history helps to understand and treat the patient even better.

The bottom line is that parents should always love and respect their children and boost their self-esteem. They should never break their trust and confidence.

”Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” Lady Bird Johnson.

Just believe in them. Giving quality time to your child helps them grow secure and strong. Parents should reassure their children that they are there for them always. Sowing seeds of affection and care in the early life of your child will help you reap the fruit when you need the most.
