Types and Applications of Sprockets

Like some power transmission parts such as pulleys, shafts, and couplings, sprocket is also a useful part for power transmission. It is a very popular and common gear or wheel that comes with metal teeth which meshes perfectly with a chain or track. The term pitch is used to refer to the distance between two sprockets. They do not allow gears to slip away and are specifically applied in cases where chains get engaged by gears or wheels. Besides, they are also used in cases of motors producing rotational motions. Industrial sprockets are essentially part of the chain drives. It is important in a chain drive that the sprocket should match with the type of chain used.

This kind of power transmission part is available in a variety of styles and types. Some manufactures adopt some specific sprocket making styles. For example, one type is a sprocket that has a hub extension on one side. One type is a sprocket that comes with a detachable bolt on a hub connected to a plate. There are still other types which are different from each other.

Based on the number of strands, sprockets can be classified into various types. Firstly, the split type sprocket is a good alternative for solid type which allows quick installation without in any way hampering the shaft and alignment. Secondly, taper bushed sprocket (TB) is an interchangeable bushed sprocket which gives a positive grip on the driven shaft. Thirdly, there is a type of quick detachable (QD) sprocket. In this type a tapered bushing is typically bolted into the bore that is machined in the sprocket. A tight grip is provided as the bushing is inserted into the sprocket, which compresses onto the shaft.

Sprockets have a wide use of applications. They are used as farm implements in a seed-cum-fertilizer drill. They have a very popular application in the bicycle sector. There are typically two sets of sprockets in a bicycle, i.e. the front sprocket and the rear sprocket. Often they are also known as the driving sprocket and the driven sprocket. It is common that the sprocket has automobile applications. In two wheeler scooters, sprocket is typically a wheel that has metal teeth. The chain rides upon it. They are imperative for a smooth mobility of two wheelers. In addition, they are even used in the film transport mechanisms of movie projectors and movie cameras. In this case, the sprocket wheels engage film perforations in the film stock.

All in all, sprocket plays an important role in many places. Like some widely used power transmission parts such as gearboxes and universal joints, they also attract people’s attention.

Animals, Humans, and Lyme Disease

You may think that the transmission of Lyme disease is very simple – you get it from a deer tick bite. That information is essentially true, and if you just want to avoid Lyme disease, that’s all you really need to know. What goes on in the woods, however, is interesting, and it helps to explain why Lyme disease is spreading and becoming more common.

Lyme transmission starts with the White-footed mouse, a common forest creature that carries Borrelia burgdorferi, the organism responsible for Lyme disease. In the most common scenario, newly hatched larval Ixodes sp. ticks feed on the mice and become infected with the organism. The ticks then develop through a nymphal stage to an adult tick, feeding on other hosts as they get older.

At both the nymph and adult stage, ticks are found clinging to the tall grasses in open forests and forest edges, the same type of environment favored by White-tailed Deer. When a deer wanders by, the ticks climb on and take another blood meal. If it’s a human that wanders by, or a dog, a raccoon, or even a bird, the tick is not fussy – deer ticks will readily feed on all of these hosts as well as other warm blooded animals.

Borrelia burgdorferi gets passed on to the new host as the tick feeds. Many animals aren’t affected by the organism and their immune systems simply kill it. White-tailed deer and some bird species are among the lucky animals that don’t get Lyme disease. Humans, however, can suffer a long and debilitating illness.

Deer are responsible for supporting large numbers of ticks; one deer can have hundreds of ticks feeding on it at any one time. Anyone who has driven the roads of North Eastern North America at dusk and dawn in the summer months knows that the White-tailed deer population is booming like never before. Deer graze by the roadsides and wander into cities and gardens. Lots of deer means lots of ticks, and deer in human communities means Lyme transmission to humans.

Deer don’t spread Lyme disease over large geographical distances however – birds do that. When a deer tick bites a bird, two things can happen: if the bird is already infected, having been bitten by an infected tick somewhere else, the new tick becomes infected and can spread the organism to other hosts. If the tick is already infected and the bird is not, the organism gets passed the other way, and because ticks take days to finish their meal, both tick and bird can be many miles away from their starting point before the tick drops off. Both can now continue to Lyme transmission. Migrating birds are thought to have spread B. burgdorferi to many new locales.

A final factor to consider is global warming. Warmer climates have opened up new territory for deer ticks, and they are now surviving and reproducing in areas where they were previously unable to withstand cold winter temperatures. Thus, ticks carried in on migrating birds are more and more likely to survive the trip.

Satellite Radio Antennas – Meaning and Its Use

Satellite radio antennas receive signals relayed by communication satellite. These signals are received by satellite receiver antennas and are altered according to the bandwidth available. For example: in many cases, the frequency is changed or perhaps increased and then directed back to the earth.

These signals have a distinct frequency and bandwidth and are moderated by amplitude, frequency or by various other means. Also, each signal carries some amount of information. What type of frequency band you choose depends on the weight of your information which includes data, pictures and sound. You would need to select one out of the six frequency bands available viz. L-band, S-band, C-band, X-band, Ku-band and Ka-band.

L-band frequency is used for data transmission and mobile telephony whereas, Ka-band frequency is used when you need to transmit high-end data to large business groups, television stations and for videoconferencing.

Where are satellite radio antennas used?

Satellite radio antennas are commonly used for a telecommunication purpose. It transmits and receives signals for high-end television, radio and internet data transmission. Such kind of an arrangement enables you to view several television channels that are broadcast through some of the major TV stations of the world.

Due to the popularity of digital satellite television amongst the TV viewers, the sale of satellite antennas is increasing manifold. If you too wish to buy a satellite antenna set for yourself, do understand and recognize your exact requirements. For example: omnidirectional antennas are those which receive signals from every direction. And so they are costlier than other types.

To offer you the experience of entertainment on-the-move, you can also find portable one to have an easy access to satellite TV and watch listen to your favorite shows wherever you are and at any point of time.

For smooth and obstacle free transmission, it is important that you place your satellite radio antenna at a suitable location. In short, this results in a better television watching experience for the viewers.

Is it easy to install satellite antenna sets?

You can hire a service provider to help you install your antenna at a suitable position or you may also prefer buying a ready-to-install antenna so that you can save money. Aside from this, you can seek help to understand the installation process from various websites and tutorials available on the internet. These websites explains a step wise process to erase your confusion (if any).

Satellite antenna sets needs to be maintained well and should be kept away from water and from the close proximity to children.

The New 2010 Honda Accord 2.4 and 3.5 Liter Engines Haven’t Changed Much

Like most years, and due to its outstanding reputation, the 2010 Honda Accord is sure to be one of the best selling cars on the market. While the car is best known for its reliability, style, and affordability, the 2010 Accord has three different engine options to choose from.

The first option to choose from when selecting an Accord is the 2.4 liter four cylinder motor. This one is found in both the LX and LX-P sedans. It generates 177 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque. The LX and LX-P model engines, with automatic transmissions, get great fuel economy of 30 mpg in the city and 21 on the highways in.

For those who want to slightly upgrade the power under the hood, the EX model sedan comes with a 2.4 liter engine that generates 190 horsepower. This is available in both EX sedans and coupes and can be either a five speed manual transmission or a five speed automatic transmission. The 190 horsepower engine has similar fuel economy to the LX model’s engine.

The 2010 Honda Accord EX also can come with an optional 3.5 liter V6 engine which produces 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. The V6 can come in a six speed manual transmission can come in coupes, but from the sedan or automatic transmissions, the engine must be a five speed. Fuel economy within the Accords with V6 engines is worse than the 4 liter engines, but is much better than comparable cars.

To say the least – The 2010 Honda Accord engines are almost identical to those within the 2009 Accords.

N-1-1 Contingency Analysis to Meet the NERC Compliance Standards

The power system studies done with the purpose of meeting the NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards address the issue of assessing power system performance, following normal and contingency conditions. The results of these studies must ensure that the transmission system performance meets the NERC Reliability Standards, and that the upgrades to meet future system needs are developed such that the reliable and secure operation of the transmission system is maintained.

The Transmission Planning (TPL) standards define reliable system performance following the loss of a single bulk electric element, two or more bulk electric elements, or following extreme events.

The loss of two elements has been historically performed using N-2 contingency analysis, which corresponds to the loss of two bulk electric elements simultaneously.

A forthcoming, more stringent, NERC TPL standard also requires N-1-1 contingency analysis, which corresponds to the loss of two elements consecutively. The system adjustments should be performed after the 1st N 1 contingency, and may be performed after the 2nd N-1 contingency in each N-1-1 contingency pair.

There is a growing need to provide the system planners with fast automated process to effectively perform NERC-compliance studies. The framework for N 1 1 and N 2 contingency analysis should have the capability to perform the following computations within one simulation run:

• Identify critical contingencies that cause violation of voltage, thermal and steady-state stability limits;

• Determine transmission system bottlenecks;

• Determine potential cascading modes;

• Compute minimum amount of necessary system adjustments;

• If load shed is required, minimize the amount of load curtailment in order to maintain reliable operation of the power system;

• Provide automatic reporting capabilities.

System adjustments may include: MW dispatch, MVAr dispatch, transformer tap change, phase shifter adjustment, capacitor and reactor switching, line switching, and load curtailment.

It is of the utmost importance to ensure that the analysis framework is based on the AC analysis methodology that allows to monitor voltage, thermal and steady-state stability limits.

Since a variety of N-1-1 scenarios may be implemented, the analysis tool should be very flexible in order to be quickly and easily adjusted to the need and specifics of a particular utility or an ISO.

The strategy to perform massive N 1 1 AC contingency should focus on providing the Planning engineers with a solution that has the following capabilities:

• Automatic creation of N 1 1 contingency lists;

• Automating the process of N 1 1 contingency analysis;

• Allowing the user to implement various sets of system adjustments within a single run;

• Incorporating the analysis of cascading outages;

• Providing easy and flexible reporting and post-processing consistent with the utility/ISO practice.

In addition, this process should be used to assist the planners in optimizing the transmission system expansion which will reduce the blackout risk and improve transmission system reliability. Therefore, the solution should have the capability to perform massive contingency analysis – hundreds of thousands to millions of contingencies – per single run.

Tremec TKO Transmissions Part 4 – How to Choose the Right One

So you have decided the advantages that the TKO five speed provides are worth the expense and effort. Now, the question is which one is the best match for your car? Do you want the extra deep first gear in the TKO-500, or would the closer gear spacing of the TKO-600 be a better match for your combination? Should you opt for the 0.82 overdrive ratio in the TKO-600 instead of the 0.64? If you have a Ford, which input shaft do you need?

The first determining factor when choosing a TKO is going to be your engine’s power output. Keep in mind that transmissions are rated for torque, not horsepower. The peak horsepower number doesn’t really matter much, it is torque that breaks things! The TKO-500 is rated for 500 lb.-ft. of torque, and the TKO-600 is rated at 600 lb.-ft. Even though both TKOs will stand up to considerably more torque than they are rated for, you still need to keep the torque capacity rating in mind.

The second thing you need to consider is your rear axle ratio. The general rule of thumb, with exceptions, is anything with a rear gear in the high twos or low threes (2.73, 3.08, 3.23, 3.36, etc.) will be a good candidate for the TKO-500. The low 3.27:1 first gear in the TKO-500 will give you much better off the line acceleration than a typical four speed, and help compensate for the “highway gear” in the rear axle. Anything with an axle ratio in the high threes and up (3.73, 3.90, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, etc.) would be better suited to the TKO-600. With a rear axle ratio of 3.73:1 or higher (numerically), your car doesn’t need as much “help” off the line as the numerically lower axle ratios do, and the slightly taller overdrive of the TKO-600 with the 0.64 fifth gear will lower your highway RPM a little bit more than the 0.68:1 that is in the TKO-500. If you have an axle ratio in the mid-threes, (3.42, 3.50, 3.55 you could go with either one, and the right choice will depend on the third and fourth factors.

The third factor you need to look at is your rear tire size. If you have a really tall rear tire, the reduction in effective gear ratio that the tire provides needs to be taken into account. A tire that is 26-27″ tall is considered fairly normal for a muscle car. If you are running 30″ tall Mickey Thompsons, however, your tire height will make a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio perform more like a 3.25:1 axle ratio would with a 26″ tall tire!

The fourth thing to consider is your engine’s temperament, along with your driving habits. Do you have a relatively mild engine that is happy when cruising at 2000 RPM, or is your engine more high-strung and doesn’t really start to run cleanly until you hit 2800 RPM? Do you frequently drive long distances on the interstate at 75 MPH, or do you stick to secondary roads where you rarely go more than 60 MPH? It is very possible to get too much overdrive, and end up with a car that you can’t put into fifth gear unless you are running at least 80 MPH because at lower speeds the overdrive drops your engine RPM too much. That is when the TKO-600 with the 0.82 overdrive may be the best choice. Many people who participate in road racing prefer the TKO-600 with the 0.82 overdrive, because it keeps their engine in its powerband on a road course in fifth gear, and the 0.64:1 ratio would drop their RPM too low.

The last question to answer only applies to Ford owners. There are four different input shaft patterns available for the TKO in a Ford: 10 spline and 26 spline, short or long. The TKO-500 is available with either a 10-spline Ford pattern input shaft or a 26-spline GM pattern input shaft. The TKO-600 is only available with the stronger 26-spline GM pattern. For the input shaft length, basically you need to know what size and year engine you have, and what depth your bellhousing is. Ford has used several different bellhousing depths over the years, and there are more variations than I have room to get into here. Most Tremec distributors can help you determine what input shaft you need if you have the above information.

When choosing a TKO that is right for your car, you need to consider your engine’s torque output, your rear axle ratio, your tire size, your engine’s temperament, and your normal cruising speed. If you have a Ford, you will need to know the engine size and year, as well as the bellhousing depth. Once you understand how all these work together, you are ready to choose the transmission that suits your needs the best. How to Have Clutch Power

The key to your motocross bike’s performance lies in the clutch. You may be an ace as a motocross player but if your clutch is not doing its part, you may find your engine difficult to control. The following are some tips for an excellent clutch.

First of all, take out those Factory Clutch Springs and substitute them with stiffer ones. Bike factories never use maximum performance parts when assembling the clutch. High performance parts usually cost more money than those being used by factories. But keep in mind that you don’t have to change every spring. Usually two or three will do but you can experiment on what works for you.

Do not neglect your transmission oil. It’s not the same as cars and trucks wherein you can change the oil once a year only. Ideally, your oil must be replaced every two or three races. It may sound too much for you, but changing the oil is cheaper than a transmission overhaul. Remember that the crud that you pick up on the track accumulates and will put early stress on your clutch plates.

Always carry extra shims for emergencies. You’ll never know when you’re going to need these things. It might happen in the middle of a race and you won’t be able to remedy the situation. You can simply insert the right washer under the bolt. The added thickness will preload your springs and take away that spongy feeling in your clutch.

You can top off your transmission to the proper level with Automatic Transmission Fluid, that is, if it is GM compatible. But don’t use a Ford type fluid. The difference between the two is GM fluid grips better than a Ford fluid which is slick as molasses.

Never use factory-installed aluminum clutch plates. These plates are suitable only for regular use but not tough enough for extended motocross use. They don’t hold up as well as steel plates which are heavier but more durable. There are two drawbacks for aluminum plates. One, they wear more quickly than steel leaving metallic deposits in the oil, thus, hastening mechanical wear. Two, aluminum warps easily when subjected to extreme heat generated in motocross.

Aging plates build up a glaze layer on the surface which makes them slip more noticeably. When this slippage is noticed, take out your fiber clutch plates and sand the surface to remove the slippery glaze. Reinstall after cleaning.

Make sure your clutch lever isn’t set too tight. Set it so that a quarter can slide between the lever perch and the lever without catching the clutch cable.

How To Tow A Vehicle In Emergency

  • Call a professional towing service if you need to tow your vehicle.
  • Flatbed equipment
  • The operator loads your vehicle on the back of a truck.
  • This is the best way to transport your vehicle.
  • Wheel lift equipment

The tow truck uses two pivoting arms that go under the front tires and lift them off Ground. The rear tires remain on the ground. This is an acceptable way to tow your vehicle.

NOTICE

Trying to lift or tow your vehicle by the bumpers will cause serious damage. The bumpers are not designed to support the vehicle’s weight. Never tow your vehicle with just a rope or chain. It is very dangerous, since ropes or chains may shift from side to side or break. Improper towing such as towing behind a motorhome or other motor vehicle can damage the Transmission. If your vehicle must be towed with the front wheels on the ground:

1. Check the ground underneath the vehicle around where the transmission housing is For a fluid leak. If you find a leak, call a professional towing service and have your vehicle inspected by a dealer.

2. Put cloth on the edge of the cover. Carefully pry with a small flat-tip screwdriver or a metal fingernail file to remove the cover. The detachable towing hook mounts on The anchor in the front bumper.

3. Take the towing hook and the wheel nut wrench out of the luggage area.

4. Screw the towing hook into the hole, and tighten it with the wheel nut wrench Securely.

5. Hook the towing device to the towing hook.

6. Start the engine.

If it is difficult to turn on the engine, put the ignition switch in ACCESSORY or in ON position

7. Manual Transmission models: Shift to Neutral.

8. Continuously Variable Transmission models: Depress the brake pedal.

9. Shift to Drive mode and hold for five seconds, then to Neutral

10. All models: Release the parking brake.

If your vehicle must be towed with the front wheels on the ground:

Continuously Variable Transmission CVT Models only:

If you cannot shift the transmission or turn on the engine, will damage the transmission. Your vehicle must be transported with the front wheels off the ground.

Models with the keyless access system have an ENGINE START/STOP button instead of an ignition switch.

NOTE:

If you cannot turn on the engine, you may experience the following while your vehicle is being towed.

Braking may become difficult since the brake system’s power assist is disabled. Steering wheel becomes heavy as the power steering system is disabled.

Turning the ignition switch to LOCK (0*1 locks the steering wheel.

With the front wheels on the ground, it is best to tow the vehicle no farther than 80 km, and keep the speed below 55 km/h. Going down a long slope heats up the brakes.

This may prevent the brakes from working properly. If your vehicle needs to be towed on an incline, call a professional towing service.
