Origins of the Mathers Family

Eminem’s roots can be found in Scandinavia through his mother Debbie Nelson and in South Wales through his father Marshall Bruce Mathers II.

But Eminem has mostly Scottish blood running through his veins. On both sides( maternal and paternal sides), Scottish roots can be found.

Back to the 7 th generation on the paternal side, Peter Mathers from Pennsylvania married a Scottish woman named Isabella (last name unknown). On the maternal side, Scottish roots can be found in Marshall’s family in the 6 th generation : Ailsa Mc Allister from Edingburgh emigrated to the United States –precisely to New York in 1870.

Most of the Mathers have been working as farmers in the state of Missouri.

Marshall Mathers I, Eminem’s paternal grandfather has been working as an assistant hotel manager at Plainsman Hotel in st Joseph Missouri and his wife Rae has been employed at Del Cornonado hotel in guest services.

When Eminem’s paternal grandmother Rae died recently in 2002 from an Alzheimer desease , Marshall Mathers II discovered interesting documents related to his famous son like a Christmas card from Marshall addressed to his grandmother Rae. Ethymology of the name Mathers Mathers means mower or reaper. History of the name Mathers

The name Mathers is related to the Scottish Barclay clan. The family Barclay settled down in a place called Mathers in Scotland in the 13 th century. The history of the Mathers goes back to an english immigrant Theobald de Berkeley and his son who owned the estate of Mathers. Alexander was the first to use the surname Mathers. Pronounciation of the surname Mathers

It is commonly admitted that the surname Mathers is pronounced as if there was an y in the middle of the name : Ma(y)thers .

If you want to know more about the history and genealogy of the family Mathers, you can find some interesting info here :

homepage.ntlworld.com/davepalmer/eminem/credits.htm [http://homepage.ntlworld.com/davepalmer/eminem/credits.htm] I’d like to thank the people who made up this interesting website. I discovered a lot of info about Marshall’s paternal side. I have a lot of info about his maternal side, so I hope to be able to complete his family tree as soon as possible.

Balancing the Accounts and Necessity of Ledger

Balancing the Accounts

Whenever it is desired to balance an account, the two sides are added up, and if the totals of the two sides are unequal then the difference is put on the side having lesser total. This will make both the sides equal. The amount of the difference inserted is known as ‘balance’ of the account. In particulars column it is written as Balance c/d (carried down). In subsequent period it is known as Balance bid (brought down). If the total of the credit side of the account is less, the balance will be inserted on credit side with the words “By Balance c/d”. This balance is known as Debit Balance and after closing the account it will be shown on the debit side with the words “To Balance bid”. Similarly if the total of debit side of the account is less, the balance will be inserted on debit side with the words “To Balance c/d”. This balance is known as Credit Balance and after closing the account it will be shown on the credit side with the words “By Balance bid”.

Personal Accounts

It is worthwhile to refresh your memory and recall that personal accounts relate to individuals and business entities (firm; company, corporation etc.) and the rule is : Receiver is to be debited and giver is to be credited. Now if on any particular date the business wants to know as to how much amount is ‘due to’ or ‘due by’ a particular person to itself (business) then it should balance the account of the person concerned. Debit balance as per personal account signifies that the person is the debtor of the business i.e. person owes an amount equal to the balance to the business or the amount, represented by the balance is ‘due to’ the business by the person. Similarly, Credit balance as per personal account signifies that the person is the creditor of the business i.e. business owes an amount equal to the balance to the person or the amount represented by the balance is ‘due by’ the business to the person.

Real Account

These are the accounts relating to property or possession or rights. Rule is : “What comes in is to be debited and what goes out is to be credited.” Thus all incomings are to be recorded on the debit side and outgoings on the credit side. On any particular date these accounts should have ‘debits balance’ representing the worth of the item covered by the account. At the end of the year (generally) or at any other point of time when the financial position of the business is required to be ascertained these accounts are balanced. These balances are shown on the assets side of the statement of position or Balance Sheet. These accounts do have ‘debit balance’ which signifies the ‘book-value’ or ‘written down value’ or ‘going concern-value’ of the assets of the business as on that relevant date.

Nominal Accounts

These are the accounts showing the various heads of expenses and sources of income. At the end of the specified period (generally one year) these accounts are closed by transfer to the final accounts i.e. Trading or Profit and Loss Account.

Necessity of Ledger

Maintaining of ledger is a must in every accounting system. It is necessary as will be clear from its advantages:

(1) Transactions relating to a particular person, item or heading of expenditure’ or income are grouped in the concerned account at one place.

(2) When each account is periodically balanced it reflects the net position of that account. For example, how much is due from a customer or how much is payable to a supplier or what is the value of total purchases or what has been the expenditure on salaries? Such information is available by balancing the ledger accounts.

(3) Ledger is the stepping stone for preparing Trial Balance- which tests the arithmetical accuracy’ .of the accounting books.

(4) Since the entries recorded in the journal are referenced into ledger the possibility of errors or defalcations are reduced to the minimum.

(5) Ledger is the destination of all entries made in journal or sub-journals.

(6) Ledger is the “store-house” of all information which subsequently is used for preparing final accounts and financial statements.

Opening entry and its posting. In the case of an existing business we are required to pass an entry in the journal (on the basis of the Balance Sheet prepared at the end of the previous year) for bringing in the new books all assets and liabilities: this is known as Opening entry.

Parenting Lessons From the Movie Blind Side

The movie Blind Side is inspirational and amazing. Sandra Bullock portrays Leah Anne the matriarch of the affluent Memphis family who adopted Michael Oher an offensive tackle for the American football team the Baltimore Ravens. Michael was held back two years in elementary school and had a spotty educational record with a 0.6 GPA in high school. Michael was born to a family of 12 children and spent most of his life a ward of the state of Tennessee.

His biological mother described Michael as a runner, that when in foster care that when he was placed with families he would runaway trying to find his way back to his mother. In the movie Blind Side Michael is taken in by Leah Anne and her family. They provide him with love, nurturing and the opportunity to be successful. And he was successful. He was able through the help of a tutor to bring up his GPA from 0.6 to 2.56 and with continue support through tutoring he received a college degree before becoming a professional football player. While the movie hinted at the importance of religion was to Leigh Anne the extent of the importance of her faith was not entirely evident.

Leigh Anne and her husband started a church in Memphis. This fact not mention in the movie, but is hinted of the importance of faith for Leigh Anne leads me to believe that Michael was exposed to a religious community and was involved in attending church and church activities with the family. I mention this because I want to emphasize the importance of involvement for families for their children’s development. Religious organizations provide enormous benefits to family for involvement, support, and growth. Studies reporting on substance use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs have shown that children that have attended religious services were less likely to have experiment with substances. The studies have also shown that the more services attended by the child the lower the possibility of experimentation with substances. In addition to religion being a positive in reducing drug use, religious organization provided opportunities for children to develop social skills to improve peer relationships. They also provide a sense of belonging for the child and the family. Religious communities also provide opportunities to understand, celebrate, and grieve life events.

In one scene of the movie Michael and PJ were at the football field getting ready to work out. Michael wanted to go home and play video games. PJ informed Michael that it was expected that Michael not only play football, but that he strive for excellence. That everyone in the family has played sports or participated in an activity, the father played basketball, the sister ran track and played volleyball, the mother had been a cheerleader, and that he (PJ) played all sports. While every child may not grow up to be a Michael Oher sports and other social activities are fundamental to child development. I think that another lesson to be learned from the Blind Side is the fact that the family did not just encourage Michael to play sports, they supported him. The family supported him during practice and was at the games to support him.

Children need to have their efforts recognized and validated, not just the Michael Oher’s of the world, but the children who spend the game on the side lines, need to know that their family care enough to show up. There are other social activities that are beneficial to children include, boy scouts, girl scouts, and explorer scouts to name a few. What is important is that you involve your child in activities using community social groups; community sports organizations, or sports and social groups through the child’s school. The more involved you are as a parent the better, it sends a message to the child that you support the child and that they are important.

The movie Blind Side teaches us the lesson to be involved in the child’s school is important. There are several scenes where Leigh Anne is talking to school staff and teachers about Michael. This is what we call the home school link. Research has found that the greater the home school link the better the child’s performance in school. This includes school attendance. There are schools that have programs that allow the parents to come to school and have lunch with their child if your child’s school has a program take advantage and have lunch with your child. Don’t wait until your child brings home their report card to find out how your child is doing, call or go by and talk to her teacher. Leigh Anne did just that in one scene, she talked to Michaels English teacher and she asked him what Michael had to do to be able to pass his class and the teacher told her what Michael needed to do. Michael did exactly what the teacher told Leigh Anne that he needed to do, and he passed the class.

In the movie Blind Side Michael had a private tutor to help him with his school work not only in high school, but also through college. While we all cannot afford to hire private tutors for our children, we can sit down and help our children with their homework. If we find that we cannot help our children with their homework, we can ask for help at the school. There are schools that have peer tutoring, some schools have after school tutoring programs, there may be a tutoring program at a local church, community college, or university that have students going to school to be teachers that can provide tutoring. There are community organizations that provide tutoring, like the Boys and Girls Club. If you have trouble finding resources or opportunities for your child most likely other parents are having the same problem. Network. Set up your own tutoring group with the help of your parents of your child’s peers. Start a learning group of 3 or 4 children and get help from the teacher to help you with study material. The parents can even split up the subjects and each one take responsibility for a subject and lead their child’s study group. Be creative.

As in all things in life, the more positive time and energy you invest in your child the greater the reward. Engage your child in social, community, and school activities, participate with your child and be supportive and available. Take an active interest in your child’s school work; find out what resources are available to help your child learn. Talk to your child’s teacher on a regular basis, not just parent teacher conferences. Help your child with her homework. Show your children that their homework and activities are important and are a priority. Do not use sports, community activities, or religious activities as a reward or consequences for behaviors. Participation in activities are growth opportunities and the more involved your child is in these activities, the less likely your child will be tempted to experiment with drugs, tobacco, and alcohol or engage in delinquent behaviors. These are the parenting lessons that are learned from the movie the Blind Side.

Tennis Side Stitches – Not Just For Runners

You are working hard on a point – running around like crazy. Suddenly, you feel a dull ache on your right side under your ribs. The point is important so you think you can work through it. The pain worsens so you stop. Once you stop, the pain usually disappears. You have just experienced a side stitch.

The side stitch is caused by a muscle spasm of the diaphragm. When we inhale, air comes into the lungs and presses the diaphragm downward. When we exhale, the diaphragm moves upward. When you eat a big meal right before you play tennis or when air has gotten trapped below the diaphragm, a cramp (stitch) can occur.

How can you get past a side stitch? The best immediate action is to try to stretch out the cramping muscle. This can be done by alternating your breathing pattern. Take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds. Then force the air back out through puckered lips to restrict the air flow. Other professionals have mentioned that crouching down and stretching tall helps by flexing the abs.

Best way to avoid side stitches? Increase your fitness and conditioning training to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Make sure that you do not consume too much food or liquid prior to play because the added weight increases the downward pull, which can help to cause the stitch.

The Benefits of Using Green and Silver Tarps

Silver and green heavy duty poly tarps are very popular for all kinds of extended outdoor uses. They are widely seen in construction, roofing, agriculture, landscaping, boating, camping, and other recreation. They can even be used to cover outdoor furniture and backyard play equipment. These tarps are lightweight and therefore easy to handle, yet they are very strong. They generally weigh about 5.5 ounces per square yard. You can buy a heavier tarp, but it will cost more, and it will not be as easy to handle because of the added weight.

The silver and green tarps are also waterproof and will protect what’s underneath against harmful UV rays that can cause equipment to fade in color and otherwise deteriorate. They should be UV treated on both sides. They should also be mildew proof, rot proof, acid resistant, and tear resistant.

The green color helps this tarp fade into a wooded or grassy landscape almost as well as a camouflage tarp does. Other kinds of heavy duty poly outdoor tarps are generally white or silver because of their reflective properties. Of course the silver and green tarps can also be reversed to put the silver side on top if that color is more desirable in the outdoor environment. Which side is facing out should not matter to the life of the tarp or the protection it offers.

Like any good tarp it is recommended that it be tightly secured to protect both the tarp and what it is covering. Eyelets should be every 18 inches or so to allow the tarp to be tied down tightly thereby helping to keep out wind and rain and all kinds of weather. The eyelets are also generally treated to make them rust proof, and the corners of the tarp are reinforced. These tarps come in different sizes to meet the desired needs. Some more popular retailers will offer a discount if purchasing these tarps by the case. Another ideal use for these good value tarps is to cover up Lumber.

One website claims these kinds of tarps last 3-4 times longer than traditional standard tarps. While that may or may not be the case depending on care and usage, the silver and green heavy duty tarps are generally a good buy for the money and are among the most popular tarps sold today. They are essential for homeowners, campers, and anyone with outdoor machinery or just something to protect from the elements.

The Freedom Trap – What You Don’t Know Could Enslave You

The universe in which we live is bi-polar. It has two sides. Electric current, for example, operates on positive and negative charges – two aspects of one energy stream. In fact, what is there in this creation that does not have its flip side? Coins are a great analogy of this bi-polar aspect of creation because they’re very familiar to us and we all use them as part of our monetary exchange system. Coins obviously have two sides: heads [obverse] and tails [reverse]. Freedom also has two sides. One we know about but what about its opposite side? What is the flip side of the freedom coin? Let’s take a look because not knowing what’s on the backside of freedom can actually enslave us… or worse.

Freedom is normally thought of as “license carte blanche.” In other words, the allowance of people to do whatever they please as long as city, state, federal and national laws are not broken. But what about spiritual laws? Seldom does man think of them. Yet, they trump human laws and are given almost no consideration in the exercising of freedom.

One aspect of this bi-polar world is the law of action and reaction or cause and effect. Illustrated very simply, if we throw a ball against a wall, the ball bounces back. The throwing is the action and the cause; the ball’s bouncing back is the reaction and the effect. This fundamental law of cause and effect, action and reaction, is also called karma. Those of a religious and spiritual mindset understand this as the law of sowing and reaping which every Saint and Mystic has taught and will continue to teach.

When we create an action, even if it’s a thought, the energy of that thought or action is placed onto the energetic Circle of Life. Eventually that energy circles back to encircle us with positive or negative results. It can either free us or enslave us. Garbage in, garbage out; health in, health out; hate in, hate out; love in, love out.

So here’s the rub – if we create actions that are in violation of spiritual laws, those actions circle back to us in the form of reactions. What goes around, comes around. Therefore, in consideration of karmic law, uncontrolled freedom is an immense liability and potential danger. Freedom should not be defined as “license carte blanche,” but action taken in consideration of consequence. “Cause and Consequence” is just another way of saying “cause and effect.” In reality there is no such thing as freedom defined as doing anything we want, especially in relation to spiritual laws, rules and regulations because every action has a consequence. In its proper definition, discipline and self-control are critical to freedom. As the famed mathematician, scientist and philosopher, Pythagoras, said: No man is free who cannot control himself. In other words, if we allow ourselves to get out of control, we will not be free, and could even become enslaved by our own uncontrolled and undisciplined actions.

For example, people are free to consume as much alcohol as they choose. There are civil laws against its intoxication, but what about the karmic affects that extend beyond civil laws, such as spiritual laws and health-oriented laws? Continued consumption of alcohol sans [without] discipline and restraint may well lead to alcohol addiction. A person may say to himself, “I’m free. I’ll drink as much as I want.” However, drinking too much will create potentially harmful, negative and destructive physical, mental, financial, emotional, familial and social conditions. The person who was at one time free to consume this freely available destructive and deadly poison now becomes enslaved by it with the potential of not just hurting himself or herself, but hurting, damaging, destroying and even killing others. All this because of an unenlightened understanding of freedom. Although this misuse of alcohol is only one example, it is easy to draw upon it to understand how an incomplete perception of freedom can, indeed, lead to slavery. We may be free to act, but we are not free in escaping the consequences of our actions. In effect, our actions bind us, and can potentially enslave us. How hard is it, for example, for an alcoholic to rid himself of the chains of his alcoholic enslavement, chains which were acquired under the guise of freedom of choice?

In summation, no one is truly free in the sense he or she can do whatever he or she wants to do. Why? Because every cause has a consequence; every action a reaction. Acting in too free a manner will ultimately lead to slavery of one kind or another. Therefore, discipline and self-control are obligatory when it comes to that beautiful ideal and state of being we call freedom. So what is it that we should know about freedom to prevent us from being enslaved?

Answer: the opposite side of freedom is slavery. We become enslaved when we do not exhibit enough wisdom to consider the consequences of our actions before we execute those actions or enough temperance when executing them to keep us balanced, secure and safe. To insure our own safety and well-being, as well as that of others, we must always consider the consequences of our actions before we execute them and then use discipline and restraint when we do execute them.

Yoga: Side Poses for Balance

Muscular imbalances that can create a rounded posture are often the result of overdeveloping the chest and abdominal areas. People tend to focus on these areas because they are in the front of the body and that is what you see in the mirror. As a result, the side of the body is often neglected.

Even the back of the body tends to get more attention that the side. Most of us experience back pain from time to time so we have that awareness. We can feel the back stretching when we do forward bends, just as we can feel the front of the body stretching in a back bend.

However, in Parighasana (Gate Pose), the side of the body is the focus. This intense lateral stretch is named for its shape, which resembles a bar used for shutting a gate. Since this pose allows a full expansion of the lungs because it opens the side ribs, it is a gateway to improved breathing. It helps to tone the waist due to the stretch of the abdominal obliques and can help provide stability for the lower back by stretching muscles deep in the back of the waist. This can be extremely beneficial if you have a stiff back and can help prevent and/or ease lower back pain.

Parighasana is excellent preparation for Parsvakonasana (Side Angle Pose) and Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) due to the fact that it opens the hips and creates length in the sides. It also can transform your breathing because you can now become aware of and feel the breath in the side of your body.

This pose also provides a great stretch for the intercoastal muscles which are located between the ribs. These muscles are often neglected and tight, leading to postural problems. The rib cage expands when the intercoastals are stretched, leading to enhanced respiration. Hence, relief from asthma, allergies and colds can be realized through the practice of this pose.

A simple awareness exercise is an excellent preparation for Parighanasana. Place your hands on your rib cage as tight to the sides of your body as you can while lying on the floor with your knees bent. Become aware of the flow of breath under your hands. Close your eyes. Feel your ribcage expand outwards when you inhale. Feel your ribs fall inwards when you exhale. Stay here for several breaths, focusing on the expansion and release of the side ribs.

With a blanket nearby, place your mat near a wall. Perform a few rounds of Cat and Cow to warm up your spine. Inhale into Cow and then exhale and arch your back up into the Cat position. Next, limber up your body by moving from Child’s Pose to Downward Facing Dog, synchronizing your breath with the movements. After a few rounds of this, rest in Child’s Pose.

Kneel on the folded blanket with your knees hip-width apart. Thighs are parallel and perpendicular to the floor and hips are directly over your knees. The lower abdomen is brought in and up as the tailbone is released down. With toes spread, press the tops of your feet, toes and shins into the blanket. Lengthen up along the spine through the top of your head upon inhaling. Upon exhaling, establish a firm foundation through the lower legs and knees.

Keep your right knee and the top of your right thigh facing upward as you extend your right leg out to the right, keeping it in line with your upper body. Try to flatten your right foot to the floor and press it down as you bring your right leg back toward your body. Keep your left thigh straight up and down and keep pressing your left foot, toes, knee and shin into the blanket.

Breathe in and extend your arms out to the sides, palms down. Keep the length in your spine as you stretch your hands away from each other. Bring the right hand to your right hip. Press the fleshy area of your right hand between the thumb and index finger into the crease where your leg joins your upper body. Lengthen the lower back by drawing the navel in towards the spine. Keep your gaze soft and forward.

Breathe out as you hinge at the hip and bend your upper body over your right leg. Reach your right hand out over the right leg and rest it wherever it lands comfortably (the thigh, shin, knee, or foot). Reach the left arm up alongside the ear with palm in. As you breathe in slowly and deeply, feel the ribcage expand in all directions. Take several slow, deep breaths. Lengthen your spine with each inhalation and let yourself go deeper with each exhalation.

Press the right hand into the right leg when you have gone as for as you can into the side stretch. Keeping your pelvis in place, rotate from the base of your spine. Keep your gaze in front of your left arm to the sky. Twist your abdomen first and then extend evenly up the spine to the crown. Feel your intercoastal muscles expand as you breathe into your left ribcage.

Rest in Child’s Pose before repeating on the other side. Parighasana may feel very different on each side. Remember to challenge yourself without straining. Incorporating this asana into a vinyasa on a regular basis will promote balance.

Some Notes On Garment Seams

Remember the plain seam which is sewn right side to right side. This means that the wrong sides are on the outside and the seam is thus sewn on the wrong side; So when you are finished sewing, the seam with its seam lips on both sides is on the inside or wrong side and this is what you want. You want the seam lips on the inside so that all that is seen on the outside is a line of stitching.

For the flat fell or fell seam, you begin by sewing your first seam on the inside or wrong side of the fabric. Thus fabrics are right side to right side. This seam should be approximately 3/8 inch and then you snip off one of the seam ‘lips’ to within 1.8 inch of the stitching line. Then you turn the larger ‘lip’ in under the smaller one. You aim to enclose the smaller ‘lip’, Note that there are three layers. You can ask if you just want to sew the two upper layers together i.e. the two seam ‘lips’ or do you want to sew the seam ‘lips’ down to the actual fabric.

This is an interesting ‘move’ i.e. just to sew the two lips together through hand stitching and this is an elegant finish. The lips will hold together; and the seam will have a ‘turned in’ look. This is the fell or flat fell seam and this seam is now usually done by stitching the three layers together through a top-stitch. In this way the flat fell is done by ‘holding down’ the seam lips to the fabric itself; the seam lips having been enclosed in each other.

Then for the French seam, the difference is that you start off at the right side of the garment. Thus the sides are placed wrong side to wrong side and the seam is sewn. You can then see the stitching line on the wrong side. The seam ‘lips’ are then shortened to approximately one eighth of an inch. The garment is then turned around so that you are working on the right side. The aim is now to enclose the inside seam lips. Sew then at least ¼ inch from the fold to enclose the inside ‘lips’. This stitching line should not be visible on the outside. What is done here is not a seam at all. It is a stitching line done to enclose the inside lips and to neaten the seam. French seams are an elegant finish for fine and lightweight material such as chiffons and light fine silks.

Leather Belts – Its Two Sides and the Ways to Maintain Them

Leather belts are most common among various types of belts. It could be leather from cow, crocodile, ostrich, lizard and etc. Because of their genuine materials, they have their own features and special needs. And compared with belts made of other materials, like artificial leather or heavy cloth, leather belts have both advantages and disadvantages.

Leather belts, due to their special materials, look more graceful and elegant and can serve as a complementary accessory. This decorative function is unrivaled because they create a grand style and stately aroma. In addition, they enjoy longevity if maintained well.

For all their advantages, leather belts are typically expensive due to their special materials and complicated workmanship. Some of them could reach up to thousands of dollars. Besides, they need careful and regular maintenance, for belts can easily absorb sweat and become wet. When that happens, they could be severely damaged. If not kept well, they could harden; become smeared, deformed and even stink. So it’s like spending a large sum of money to take on a tiresome burden if you are not well prepared.

Then how to maintain leather belts? Here are some helpful tips. First, don’t twist or bend them violently or rub them strongly for they are not that pliable. Second, keep them at a clean, dry and cool place and keep them out of direct sunlight, because moisture and direct sunlight can damage the quality of the leather. Third, clean them periodically. Use a soft cloth with a little soap to wipe them softly. There could be dust and grime on the surface, use the same way. Four, don’t strap your belt too tightly, it could become out of shape.

We can see, although leather belts are more elegant-looking and enjoy a longer life, they are also expensive and can easily lose their luster. But if maintained well and correctly, they can also look good as new.
