How Will Arsenal Fare in The New EPL Season?

It is almost universally accepted that they play the most expansive and attractive brand of football in the English Premier League. Yet, they have now gone five years without winning a single trophy – that despite the promise from manager Arsene Wenger that his team were ready to win a major trophy last season. The faithful fans await that day when there will be an addition to the Gunners’ trophy cabinet.

Critics will say that Arsenal have now pretty much officially gone into reverse as a team, and certainly as a major force in the English premier league since 2005. That was the last year the Gunners finished in the top two of the premiership even though they were 12 points behind the then champions – Chelsea. Since then they have basically flattered to deceive as genuine title contenders. Over that period, they finished 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007, 3rd in 2008, 4th in 2009, and 3rd in 2010.

As most fans know all too well, winning the English premier league is a tough challenge and it has certainly got tougher in the time since the Gunners last won the league. In that time, although Manchester United have won the league there times and Chelsea twice, a number of newbies have emerged to challenge the orthodoxy.

Enter Old Trafford’s noisy neighbours from Manchester City and the Gunners’ very own neighbours from hell, Spurs. Tottenham have moved from journey men in to a serious outfit under the management of Harry Redknapp who seems to be enjoying the chance to manage a club with big ambitions and relatively deep pockets.

Fancy footwork only goes so far. What Arsenal need is not a flashy striker but some semblance of backbone running through the team. A solid midfielder who can hold the forte while others around him such as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri surge forward is much needed and the available option simply don’t cut it at the highest level. Memories of Rooney and Ronaldo and then Rooney and Nani running rings around the arsenal midfield and defense in subsequent Champions League semi-finals still haunt the Emirate faithful. Alexander Hleb, a former Arsenal midfielder recently joined Birmingham City football club on loan for the season. His old team could probably use his services even more.

Arsenal’s squad for the new season consists of the following players: Manuel Almunia, Andrey Arshavin, Nicklas Bendtner, Marouane Chamakh, Gael Clichy, Pereka Neves Denilson, Vassiriki Abou Diaby, Johan Danon Djourou-Gbadjere, Emmanuel Eboue, Lukasz Fabianski, Cesc Fabregas, Laurent Koscielny, Vito Mannone, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna, Bilong Song, Dimitri Alexandre, Robin Van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, Sebastien Squillaci.

Rafael Nadal Sets His Sight on the Clay Season

Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is all set to conquer the clay courts of Europe. Riding high on confidence after his remarkable performances in all the four tournaments he had appeared since his comeback to professional tennis.

The Spaniard superstar proved to all that he has enough fight left in him when he rallied from a set and a break down to defeat Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the finals of the Indian Wells a couple of days ago. Nadal’s triumph at the recently concluded BNP Paribas Open was his third title win of the current season. The 26-year-old has now improved his season stats to 17-1 which infact is one of the best start to a season in his long and accomplished career. Nadal had won two other clay event title in the Latin American continent in February but those were not considered as a true test of grit, stamina, and most importantly his knees by skeptics. The 7-time French Open winner’s 6-0, 6-2 destruction of world no. 5 David Ferrer in the final of the Mexican Open is more than enough to clear all the doubts that many have of him.

Prior to the Indian Wells event, many doubted how Nadal would hold up and the chances of the 11-time Grand Slam champion winning at the Masters tournament was always under question. The Spaniard had not won a hard-court event since 2010, and was just returning back from a seven-month long hiatus during which he underwent rehabilitation for his injured left knee. But, the final at the Indian Wells witnessed Nadal’s employment of his powerful forehand, the ferocity of his ground strokes and the sheer determination that have long characterized the game of the ‘King of Clay.’

The victory at Indian Wells also has allowed him to climb into the world no. 4 position in the ATP rankings which is quite important as it will help him to stay out of the kind of draw he experienced at BNP Paribas Open where he had to overcome Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.

Despite his emphatic win, Nadal is more concerned about the European clay season and the next Major at Roland Garros because the Spaniard, on the advice of his doctors, has pulled out of the Miami Masters so as to allow his knees to rest. The Spaniard who still needs to take anti-inflammatory before his matches has been playing intensely for weeks require certain time to strengthen his left quadriceps to avoid the kind of injury he has experienced.

Nadal is considered one of the best clay court player of all time, and has in fact dominated the scene for almost the last eight years.

Boho Necklaces Are The Most Wanted Jewellery This Season

Summer is the season that doesn’t really let you wear too heavy and tight dresses, and it doesn’t even allow you to put on makeup. Actually, we can’t blame summer, it’s us who try not to wear uncomfortable clothes, and put on makeup because it will ultimately melt under the sun and create patches on the skin. But, if you push aside gorgeous clothes (heavily embroidered ones) and makeup, then what can make you still look utterly pretty? Oh! How can we forget? Of course, the accessories!

Accessories are the only assets you can have that will undoubtedly make you look amazing, and will add and edgy factor to your attire. Therefore, even if you aren’t wearing a stunningly gorgeous attire, what you can do is glam up your simple attire using some really pretty jewellery. Thinking which jewellery would be apt for summer? Every jewellery is apt for summer, but it’ll be best if you go with the latest trends, and the jewellery that are trending these days are ‘boho jewellery’.

Boho culture is loved by most of the Indians. Can’t believe it? Well, then you need to take some instances from the 60s Bollywood films such as Hare Krishna Hare Raam, Aahutee, and many other 60s and 70’s films. Actresses like Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman were the ones who carried the ‘bohemian’ look really well. But now, the boho looks have changed or rather have become better than the 60s era, and have turned out to be the hottest trend ruling the current year and the Indian fashion industry. Now, coming to wearing boho jewellery this summer. If you don’t feel like wearing a too heavy and gorgeous attire this summer for any occasion, then the best thing you can do is keep the attire simple, and add an edge to it by wear beautiful boho jewellery, especially a statement necklace.

Boho statement necklaces are the most talked about jewellery among the women, especially the youths. Whether you are wearing a kurti, saree, or a western outfit such as a plain tee with torn jeans, shorts or a maxi skirt, you can easily pump up your look by putting on a stunning boho necklace.

Boho necklaces come in various sizes and shapes, but currently, the ones that are most famous and loved by all are the ones that are oxidised or are made of German silver; even oxidised gold necklaces are famous. Apart from necklaces made of metals, there are many others made of marble chips, river stones, semi-precious stones, wood, and etc. So, you can pretty well understand that there are varieties of boho necklaces available in almost every jewellery shop. So, if wearing too dazzling or heavy attires is a big “NO” from your side, then go for plain white/black/grey or other solid coloured attire this summer, be it a western wear or ethnic outfit, and make sure you top it up with an amazing boho necklace.

Another quirky thing that you can try out is, instead of using your necklace as a proper neckwear, use it as a head gear; you are simply going to look like a sultry goddess.

Christmas Time – A Season Of Memories

Ecclesiastes 3:1

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Christmas is one of the happiest seasons of our life. It gathers us together as families, where we create special loving traditions and so many loving memories. We all have special remembrances of Christmas’s past. I would like to share with you some of my memories.

Christmas has changed for me through the years. I am a grandma now and enjoy special Christmas’s with my grown children and their families. I watch them create lasting memories for their little ones. I am reminded of those happy times when my precious children were still home with us and of the Christmas’s we had Together. How I miss those special times.

My song “Christmas Wish” says what is in my heart.

If I could have one Christmas wish, I’d go back in time,

When our children all were young and they were home with us.

We’d decorate the house with lights, put up the Christmas tree,

Bake cookies; sing Christmas carols in the neighborhood.

Make gifts for the ones we love; wrap them really nice,

Laugh, kiss and hug a lot, we’d have so much fun.

I’d read the story of Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem

In the manger we’d carefully lay the Savior in.

Christmas Eve we’d hold them tight, our hearts filled with love

Give thanks for our family, our special gift from God.

We’d tuck them safely into bed, fill the stockings full,

Peek in at our sleeping babes; angels without wings.

Eyes would sparkle Christmas morn’ when Dad turned on the lights,

Santa left so many gifts; cookies and milk were gone.

Opening gifts was the best of all; parcels ripped apart,

Finding their special wish, jumping up and down.

I’d bake the turkey as they played with the toys they got,

We’d feast together on food and love, what a heavenly day.

The memories of those special days many years ago

Seem like only yesterday; life was filled with joy.

If I could have one Christmas wish, I’d go back in time,

When our children all were young and they were home with us.

Not only does Christmas bring back memories of my precious children but also memories or my dear mother who passed away October 18, 2002. She was 86 years old and life had not been easy for but she did her best to make our lives Happy. The most favorite memories of my mother were the wonderful Christmas’s she created for my brother, sister and I. She always made Christmas beautiful and exciting, in spite of our alcoholic father who played havoc with our Lives, whenever he got drunk, especially at Christmas time.

My mother seemed to have a mission to make things right for us each Christmas. Every year she would open a charge account at Zellers, to buy us gifts. My father gave her no money. We were poor because of his addiction. She bought us needed things like socks and underwear but always something special. I remember the red leather loose-leaf binder she gave me when I was 10. We kids did not know it then, but for the rest of the year mom paid off her charge account with cash she could squeeze from her food money. Each new season she started over with another Christmas charge account.

Mom did not let us see the tree before Christmas morning, an old family tradition. My kids now have their tree up at least two weeks before Christmas. But never the less, when I was young the first viewing of the tree was glorious.

One Christmas Eve, when my dad was drunk, he took a Christmas tree from a lot, which had closed for the night, and hauled it home, dragging it behind him. We lived in Canada and the tree was frozen. When he brought it into our house to thaw it out; my mother was made aware of why no one had purchased it. The tree had only a few branches. My mother sent him back for another tree, which was equally as bare, so they tied the two together.

Mom would stay up all night carefully decorating the tree and wrapping our gifts. She always had a knack of doing things perfectly. She made a special effort to choose the most beautiful paper she could afford and each gift had a bright ribbon and bow. She was dedicated to bringing excitement to our eyes, Christmas morning, when she turned on the lights to our gorgeous tree, laden with so many gifts from Santa. Her reward came when she saw the enjoyment we had as we ripped open each treasure.

Often our father was too hung over to get up with us to open gifts and would later head out the day to be with his buddies but our mother made sure out Christmas was special. We always went to grandma and grandpa’s house for a turkey feast with all our relatives.

This Christmas I am especially grateful for my loving mother who sacrificed so much for her family and created Christmas memories and traditions, which I see being passed down to my grandchildren. I will miss her dearly.

In all of our own lives we have special Christmas memories and I have one more which I will never forget.

I call it “The Miracle of the Pinecones.” Just before Christmas, several years ago, my five-year-old grandson, Jesse, and I were in Julian California where my husband was completing a job. As we wondered below the spectacular pine trees we saw pinecones lying on the They were large and magnificent. My grandson loved them and wanted to Take some home, so we gathered them up.

I wondered what we could create with them. As I held one up and turned it upside down, I realized it looked like a perfect Christmas tree, only brown. I found my Christmas snow and sprayed it white. Right before our eyes the pinecone turned into a tree, covered with a blanket of snow. We then decided to decorate it. I found multicolored sequins and when we touched them to the snow they stuck. The pinecones became jewel covered Christmas trees.

Jesse and I had so much fun making trees that we encouraged my mother, his great-grandmother to get involved and we spent an afternoon making beautiful trees. What a wonderful memory I have of my mother and grandson working together creating multicolored treasures. I took a picture with my heart. We had so many trees and wondered what to do with them all. We gave some to family members and recruited them to go Christmas caroling in the neighborhood. I took another picture with my heart, of little Jesse singing ‘Away in a Manger’ and then and then proudly giving his precious tree to a smiling neighbor.

We still had trees to give and I wondered what to do with them. That year I taught the 16-year-old Sunday school class at my church. I wondered if I could combine my teenagers and the trees into a service project that would bring the spirit of Christmas to these young people. There was a senior care home across from our Church. I inquired if they would allow me to bring my teenagers in to sing Christmas carols to their residences and distribute the remaining Christmas trees. The home gave me their approval and thanks. When I presented my idea to my students I was not prepared for their response. Some of them were not excited about the idea. Actually, I think, many of them were just embarrassed to sing in front of each other. But I assured them it would be a nice thing to do and armed each one with a tree, the boys as well as the girls. We set out on our mission.

When we stepped into the first room of the care home, my young people were a little timid but did sing a weak verse of “Silent Night”, except for one big boy who stood in the back of the room and would not sing. One of them handed their tree to the grateful patient and we left.

As we worked our way from room to room the teenagers gradually warmed up, when they saw the smiles and tears on the faces of those dear old souls, except for the boy in the back. Their singing got louder and more in tune and they couldn’t wait to rush to the next room. I will always remember the 95-year old man, who had been confined to bed for several years, accepting his Christmas tree from a group of excited teenagers. I took another picture.

When we had given out the trees the young people were satisfied and happy. They felt the Christmas spirit and didn’t want to leave. They knew the joy they had given the patients.

We finally headed for the door. Along the way we met a sad little lady sitting in the hallway in her wheelchair. When she spotted those noisy, laughing teenagers a smile came across her toothless face and she held up her feeble arms hoping to give them a hug. My wonderful teenagers formed a line and each one of them bent down and give her a big hug. Another picture!

When we got outside the building, we discovered that the teenage boy, who had stayed in the back of each room and would not sing, was missing. I went back into the building to find him and it was then that I took the most memorable picture, with my heart. There, in the hallway, was the big muscular boy, on his knees, in the arms of that dear little 100-year-old lady. He had his strong, but gentle arms rapped around her frail little body. Tears were streaming down both their faces. On her lap was the pinecone Christmas tree he had carried throughout the home and had been too embarrassed to give.

That year love came in the form of a pinecone tree. We all have so much to be grateful for as we create Christmas memories and traditions within our families How blest we all are.

This Christmas we have more reasons to look for the good things of life and be thankful for all we are blessed with, in spite of events of the world. We must remember that Christmas is a season of giving and of gratefulness. I wrote a song to help encourage all of us and help us know what we can do this Christmas to make a difference in our world.

What Can I Do To Help?

There’s so much sadness and so much pain. What can I do to help?

There’s so much anger and hatred. What can I do to help?

I can cherish my freedom, in this country I love.

I can bring comfort to someone. I can do all that I should.

There’s so much hurt and confusion. What can I do to help?

There’s so much sorrow and worry. What can I do to help?

I can love my brother; I can do a kind deed.

I can care for another; I can get down on my knees.

There’s so much sadness and so much pain. What can I do to help?

There’s so much anger and hatred? What can I do to help?

I can fight against evil and the suffering it brings

I can always to God’s will, so peace can come to our world

I can always do God’s will so peace can come to our world.

Thank you for letting me share my special memories of the happiest season of my life. I pray we will all remember the reason for our Christmas Season and do all.

We can to bring peace and happiness to our families and to our world.

WE can enjoy our own traditions and be grateful for this Christmas, a season of Memories.

Coming of the Dry Season

The novel entitled, “Coming of the dry season” by Mungoshi consist of ten chapters and refers to several issues that affect Africans in today’s world.

Education is viewed as a vehicle to success in all endeavors and contributing to the political, social, religious, and economic well being.

Mungoshi has a negative side of the story on formal education to Africans, especially during the colonial periods, where Africans could not occupy influential posts despite being educated more than a white person.

Creation of a social system in which the educated are granted higher status than those without causes disunity in society. Alienation between educated and uneducated is functional to our social well-being.

The debate between two boys who are friends and are on an equal level until they entered into the alien school system in the story; “The mountain”, tells a story on the evils of formal education.

Values and social hierarchies imposed by the education system creates a rift between community members.

Chinua Achebe in, “Thing Fall Apart”, says that, “Western education acted as a crushing blow leveled at traditional values by aliens and causes the society to fall apart”.

Mungoshi condemns the economic, political, social, and educational configuration brought by white people.

Unlike informal education where communalism is kept intact, formal education encourages individuals to be awarded on merit. Our contemporary society has an insatiable appetite for greedy fuelled by western education.

One of Charles’s stories; “The setting sun and the Rolling” shows how our African community has been left in a social shambling state.

Western education does not give us a solution to our problems, but it worsens it. Imfundo yebeLungu kayilabubelo ngitsho lakancane.

Dzidzo yechirungu haina pundutso kwatiri. Many graduands in our modern society from universities and colleges have despaired hope and are puzzled with the problems they face.

Their hope is banked on the old age to offer the solution. Formal education is good for those who are determined but fosters bitterness to the community.

“Shadow on the Wall” is a story that indicates how parents are not caring for their children. Child abuse, hostility, and disputes between parents and their off-springs are the order of the day.

Musaemura Zimunya in one of his poetry books portrays urban areas as a place; Language is difficult to understand, parents deny their children the gift of language to express themselves. Hence children are placed on a solitary plain as they are abused by their parents.

“The accidents” in Coming of The Dry Season depicts an urban area as a bad place for blacks to reside.

Many blacks are caught with misfortune hence unemployment, prostitution, robbery, poor sanitation, and a host of other problems are a product of the urban set-up.

In today’s world, many people are living in misery. An urban area will never be a permanent resident for Africans because it was imposed on them by a white person.

“Coming of the dry season”, the title story in Mungoshi’s book tells a story of Moab, who forgets his parents after securing employment in town. There are some people who resemble Moab in our contemporary society.

Embracing western values have made us shun our relatives who are poor and uneducated because they put us on shame. Many people have become wild animals that devour their by-products.

They abuse children and swindle associates with their valuable assets. Women have been turned to the “sugar pie” of the city, an ice cream ready to be eaten by the rich men in town.

Art is good to the community as it exposes bad conduct and seeks a solution to it. Education is good some-how but breathes venom to society.

Mungoshi’s stories forefronts the bad issues imposed on blacks by whites that will never be easy to put an end to. The fact that some benefit at the expense of others is what makes the whole issue complex

Summer Solstice – Season of Passion and Compassion

Summer Solstice is the season Mother Nature is at the peak of abundance, and you too can join this natural cycle and accomplish miracles. Give your full attention to your fiery passion for life, and nurture and restore yourself with watery emotional compassion for where you are now, and also for the future you desire. That’s an ancient formula for abundance at the time of Midsummer Solstice.

The Summer Solstice Sun is at Zenith

Summer Solstice, June 21st, is the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Sun’s power is at it’s most potent – and on that day, the sun reverses, and the days shorten, as the nights lengthen. The journey into the harvest season has begun, and at the Winter Solstice, the Sun again “turns” and the days begin to lengthen.

The solar cycle was revered by your ancient ancestors, and their “Sun Markers” are etched in stone cave drawings – in monuments like Stonehenge and in medicine wheels. The temples in Egypt, those of the Mayans, and the Inca in Peru center around the Sun.

Sun cycles and life cycles.

The visual movement of the sun to the north – and then the reversal (returning to the South) marked a turning point in the year that has been celebrated since time-out-of-mind. And many of the ancient traditions are embedded in our modern world — their origins obscure. Yet your cellular memory still holds the wisdom of Nature.

You are no longer dependent on seasons and daylight for your survival. A drought does not mean famine, and winter no longer means “early to bed.” The importance of the sun is lessened by today’s technology. Electricity, and infrastructure for travel and transportation advances eclipse the sun’s dominance. It is easy to forget all life depends on the sun.

Sun as the source of life.

Ancient people lived the truth that life came from the sun and without it, life could not exist. The journey of the sun through the solar cycle (seasons) guided the planting, growing, and harvesting times – as it does today.

The sun may have lessened in importance in your mind – but not in your life. You are still bound genetically to the ancient cycles. Can you feel this special time of year as unique and offering you an opportunity? It is – don’t miss it!

Summer Solstice – the season of abundance

Summer is a happy and joyous time, especially when compared to the darker, quiet and colder winter. Midsummer (Summer Solstice) is roughly the middle of the growing season – the time when everything is abundant and flourishing. Brilliant fields of flowers bloom, trees are luscious green with new leaves; and vegetables, sweet fruits and berries are ripening. Nature is reaching her peak of abundance.

Ancient symbols unit the earth and sun.

Midsummer is the time when the Sun reaches the peak of its power. The Sun, manifests as the Sun King, or The Green Man seated on his Oak-foliage throne – and lord of the forests. His face surrounded by leaves is seen carved in stone or wood in churches,on fountains, and at gateways.

On this longest day of the year, light and life are abundant. At mid-summer, the Sun God has reached the moment of his greatest strength. His union with the Earth Mother Goddess is the promise of abundance, and she manifests as a pregnant Mother Nature, or Litha (Saxon).

Capture the essence of Midsummer or Summer Solstice.

Natural cycles of the seasons influence you as do circadian rhythms of night and day. Why not test (and try) what the ancient cultures knew to be the “energy of the times.”

If you align with Nature, you took the time to carefully plant the seed ideas you want to grow into your future at the Spring Equinox (March 21st.) Now is the time to nurture your passion just as the sun nurtures all life. Focus on what is growing in your life, weed out what you do not want, and water (love and nurture) your Dreams.

Nurture and enjoy NOW.

Take the time to celebrate both work and leisure – for it is in enjoyment and childlike play that life grows abundantly. Accept and make time for enjoying your current life – before harvest. Take responsibility now for your future and assure abundance at your harvest time — in the Fall.

Find your balance: Passion and Compassion.

The power of the sun at Summer Solstice is at its most potent, and the earth is fertile with a promising harvest. Midsummer is a time to balance the Sun’s warming rays – strength and passion – and the cooling freshness of the “water or compassion” that nurtures all growth.

Through awareness, willpower, strength and conscious action – your passion for your creations come to fruition at harvest in the Fall. Explore your passions and the “fiery force – the heat” within you.

Next, find a good balance to your fiery passion in your love and compassion for your creations, and your love and desire to share your harvest with others. Deep heart-felt caring nurtures your dreams and your future. Without the balance – the passion alone is easily misdirected and can “burn up” your destiny in wasted efforts, wrong directions and intense misplaced emotions.

Without the soothing, nurturing of your heart-felt compassion, like a plant starved for water, your dreams dry up and wither on the vine.

Yet compassion alone (the watery emotions) may lie stagnant, without the balance of the fiery passion and direction of a clear focus. In right combination, fire and water nurture a productive, abundant future.

A balance between passion and compassion fine tunes your sense of purpose, and your inspiration guides you in the right direction. When your heart and compassion are your guides, your creativity will blossom, bear fruit and return you a bountiful harvest.

Summer Solstice and the first day of summer.

“Solstice” is Latin for “sun stands still” (sol “sun” and sistere “to cause to stand still.”) To those watching, the (apparent movement of the Sun’s path north or south) comes to a stop before reversing direction.

To the observers, the sun appears stationary in its northern and southern progression and seem to rise and set at the same location on the horizon for about five days before and after the actual solstice. At that time the Sun begins to wane or lose power – and the days shorten and nights lengthen.

The Summer Solstice and Marriage.

The union of the Solar power and Mother nature is the promise of abundance, and the fruit of that union is the harvest or birth of your Dreams. In a similar fashion, the potency of this time joined couples in marriage.

The Romans celebrated Summer Solstice as sacred to Juno, the patroness of marriage, and her month, June, remains today the most popular time for weddings.

In old Europe, the time between planting and the harvesting of the crops, allowed time for weddings. June was selected, as the sacred marriage or union of the Goddess and God occurred in early May at Beltaine and it was unlucky to marry in May.

The Druids’ celebrated the day as the “wedding of Heaven and Earth”, and that may also be one of the beginnings in the present day belief of a “lucky” wedding in June.

The only moon of Midsummer is the Honey Moon, a time when the hives are harvested for honey. Fermented honey is the ancient drink of the Gods, known as mead, and customarily drunk at wedding parties. The roots of the modern day “honeymoon” survive in current customs.

Summer Solstice is celebrated around the world – in England at Stonehenge and Avebury thousands gather before the sunrise to welcome the Sun.

Other ancient names and celebrations for Summer Solstice.

Midsummer eve was also called Alban Heruin or Alban Hefin, Whitsuntide, Vestalia (Ancient Roman), Cerridwen (England), the Faiery goddess Aine of Knockaine (Ireland), the Feast of Epona (Ancient Gaulish), Feill-Sheathain, Gathering Day, Sonnwend, Thing-Tide, All-Couple’s Day, Johannistag, and St. John’s Day.

After converting Europe to Christianity, the Pope declared the feast day of St. John the Baptist to be June 24th and is one of the oldest feasts in church records. The date was the Summer Solstice time of Jack-in-the-Green or The Green Man. He was converted to the Feast of St. John the Baptist, and St. John was then often portrayed in leafy and rustic attire, sometimes with horns and cloven feet (like the Greek Demi-God Pan) and with the classic face in the foliage of The Green Man.

Summer Solstice was a time of magic, meeting with the Fairies and of protective garlands of herbs and flowers to deflected evil spirits. St. John’s Wort (also known as “chase-devil”) is used today by herbalists to calm emotions and relieve depression.

Most celebrations (Celts & Slavs among others) marked Midsummer with huge bonfires that celebrated the power of the sun. Couples jumped through the flames, with the belief their crops grew as high as they leapt. Some traditions celebrated this time of year by setting large wheels on fire and then rolling them down a hill into a body of water.

The Chinese marked the day by honoring Li, the Chinese Goddess of Light. The Summer solstice ceremony in balance celebrated the earth, the feminine, and the yin forces of darkness.

Ancient Egypt worshiped the sun and many temples and monuments mark Solar Solstice cycles and star formations.

Native American rock formations, petroglyphs (carvings etched in stone) and stone markers dot the North and South American continents. Ancient cultures from the Mayan, Oltec, and Aztec to Machu Pichu in Peru mark solar times and stars with stone temples and markers.

Your Good Fortune: “Aligning with the natural cycles empowers you now to succeed against all odds.”

A season of Premiership dominance was the order of the day last season, with Chelsea winning the league by eight clear points. The Blues won 18 of their 19 matches at Stamford Bridge, drew the other and only looked susceptible to defeat after the title was sewn up.

The Champions League eluded manager Jose Mourinho for the second season running, with his side crashing out in the first knockout stage to Barcelona. He has responded by signing two high profile players this summer.

AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko, coveted by some as the world’s best striker, signed for £30 million while Germany captain Michael Ballack arrived on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

Shevchenko scored 127 goals in 208 Serie A appearances for Milan after bursting onto the scene with Dinamo Kiev in 1997. Ballack has proven to be a goal scoring midfielder, scoring 44 goals in 107 league appearances for Bayern Munich and finding the net 31 times in 68 matches for his country.

A whole host of players have been shipped out of the club as Mourinho chases the grand prize of the Champions League. Hernano Crespo departed for Inter Milan, long serving Eidur Gudjohnsen left for Barcelona, Damien Duff in a shock £5 million move to Newcastle and Asier Del Horno returned to Spain among others.

Verdict

Chelsea have strengthened the squad that already no other team can match with two world class additions. There is no value in it, but they will win the league again at short 4/9 odds.

Fishing Season: Spring. What Do We Need?

Early spring. I consider this period to be the most difficult for searching and catching fish. On large rivers, ice has already come down, but the water is rather cold, due to the melting of snow and ice in the bays and the introduction of “harsh” water into the riverbeds. Fish at this time is inactive.

It is not difficult to determine this period. Snow has already fallen, but nature has not yet awakened. The rivers have a dull gray appearance, and the banks, bristling with bare branches of bushes and trees, do not add optimism to the first fishermen already sitting near the spring water.

But is everything so hopeless? No, you can fish at this time. Let us together define those terms that will not allow you to go home without a catch at this time.

I will tell you in the example of a river near which I live and most often fish. I will clarify all the necessary nuances.

Choose a place for fishing

The floodplain of my river is such that on the left, more shallow and shallow shore, the water vegetation is located from the water’s edge at a distance of 12-15 meters. The depth at such a distance is insignificant. The right bank is more precipitous and thickets of aquatic vegetation begin in 3-5 meters. It is much deeper here. Which shore to choose?

It should be borne in mind that during the period of increased solar activity, water is stratified by temperature. Warmer water is found on the shallow bays of the northern shore. So, the left bank, which is shallower, and therefore warmer, with aquatic vegetation far from the water’s edge at shallow depths, which also creates a sense of security for the fish (given the transparency of the water) is more preferable. If you add to the above-mentioned the presence of warm sewage in a place, then, most likely, this will be the place to which you, first of all, should pay attention. Although, of course, this is just a general discussion. So to speak, the guide to action. I think that practically all anglers in their regions know well the places where the season is best from year to year. Do not philosophize, rape them first!

A way of fishing

The feeder, I believe, is just the same tackle that will not allow the early spring to leave the river empty. And here it is appropriate to say a few words about the minimum necessary equipment. And in the feeder, it is, above all, a rod that has certain qualities. Personally, I use the rod “Pride” from TM “Flagman”. This heavy-duty feeder with a length of 3.6 meters allows you to drop feeders weighing up to 125 grams. The rod is light and reliable, it is equipped with three changeable tops and different rigidity and satisfies all conditions of catching – from standing water to a strong current, and provides excellent visual control. After all, the process of catching involves the need to track the most delicate “early spring” bites of inactive fish. Knowing that not everyone can afford such luxury as a branded feeder rod, I want to say that you can catch any cheap spinning or fishing rod.

Since we catch in shallow water near the coast, a monolayer with a breaking load of three kilograms (I use Salmo Evolution with a diameter of 0.17) is quite suitable. You should not put thicker. With the help of this line, I made long enough casts and dug solid fish at “loading” from the eighty-gram feeder, without using any shock-leader! For those who can afford it, try to catch with a cord. I now switched to the “Fireline” from Berkley and I can say that for catching a feeder in some cases this is the best option. The braids are strong and strong, and thin at the same time, and most importantly they have a quality that is of paramount importance for this kind of catching – they are super sensitive!

Hooks for feeder

I use hooks from Gamakatsu No. 16 of the F-21 series. Very thin, strong, allowing to hold a large fish. In addition, they are perfectly suited for the attachment of bloodworms, which is the bait number one in the described period.

Feeders

Open type. I use the type of feeder, the lower part of which is two lead “skis”, connected together by a wire mesh. The top is a cylindrical grid. When lifting this feeder from the bottom, the lead “skis” play the role of underwater wings, and the net between them plays the role of a stabilizer, which makes it easy to tear the feeder from the bottom and deliver it to the shore. The trough is tied to the main line. Above a distance of 10-12 cm knit a loop, to which the way “loop in the loop” attach the leash. The use of side branches or triple swivels is considered to be unjustified in clear water.

Note: for a more convenient definition fish flocks, I recommend that you use a fishfinder that will greatly speed up your fishing process. Read more: how to read a fishfinder

Leap for feeder

A separate topic for conversation. In the period of clear water, I mainly use fluorocarbon. The material itself I would not call transparent, but in water, it becomes almost invisible. I use the Vanish transition from Berkley for leashes. The diameter is not so important because of the invisibility of this line. When fishing with a braid, I use leashes with a diameter of 0.18 mm and a breaking load of 2.9 kg. The line of this diameter is less confused and twisted by the flow of water. Hook one!

The length of the leash is 50-80 cm. The stronger the current, the longer the leash should be. On a leash, I put a pellet with a weight of 0.3-0.5 gr., Which can be moved. For what I will explain below.

Bait for the feeder

Considering that for ten March days spent on the river with the feeder, I did not see a bite on the worm, spells, etc. – my only bait of this period is the bloodworm in its pure form, without any sandwiches.

First, we put on the hook a small foam plastic ball of white color, then two or three bloodworms, planting them with rings (that is, piercing the body below the head and at the tail). I hide the sting in the tail of the last bloodworm. The foam ball located on the hook raises in the standing water a hook with a nozzle on the height, which is limited to a pellet on a leash and allows you to catch different layers of water. On the current, the pellet restricts the free oscillation of the leash.

I cannot say anything specific about why a styrofoam attracts fish so much. I know one thing: a scarlet bloodworm on a white background of a ball becomes such a bright target, from which neither the roach nor the chub does not refuse in the spring (these fish often give the main weight in my catch). In addition, playing a certain depth of bait on an invisible leash leave indifferent no fish, seeing the bait from a fairly long distance. The method of nozzle packing is dictated by the presence of a large amount of fry, which, with the traditional method of planting this delicate bait, pulls the tail of the larvae, thereby causing the top of the feeder to register false bites. This leads to an unreasonable lifting of the tackle from the bottom and a reduction in the net fishing

«Feeding for the feeder»

As a basis, I use a winter bait with Betaine, which works well in our region. The composition is as follows:

1) The basis is 500 g;

2) Milk powder – 1/2 cup;

3) Cinnamon – 1 teaspoon;

4) Cocoa – 1 tablespoon;

5) Ground dog food with the smell of liver – 1 glass;

6) As a binder – ground oat flakes;

7) Ripper is sand, in case you are too flaxy, and water overdo.

An important note: about the consistency of the composition: the bait should be washed out of the trough during the first ten minutes. To determine the interval of “release” of the feeder from the feed mix after the first cast, I lift the feeder upward after 3-4 minutes, regardless of whether the bite was or was not. According to the state and amount of bait left in the bird feeder, you can determine whether the composition is loose enough or vice versa, and add a ripper or binder to it, respectively. The use of the popular “bread + macula” type in cold water does not give any decent result, especially when the consistency resembles a window putty.

Now that we are prepared for fishing, we only have to drop the tackle accordingly, getting to the same chosen place. Now it is not difficult, because long casts are not needed. If you do not trust your eye, use an additional rod equipped with a marker. Having installed it on the surface of the water, you will always have a reliable landmark… Using these simple techniques and gear will allow you with honor to get out of the unspoken competition with fellow fishermen surrounding themselves with a palisade of ordinary donkeys. You will only have one feeder! That’s why, having nothing against ordinary spinning donkeys, I prefer a more delicate gear.

Try it, maybe you’ll like it!

So, based on the above, the set for spring catching on the feeder looks like this:

– a rod of a heavy class, with a test within 125-150 gr;

– coil EU 3500-4000 from the “Line Winder”;

– a braid with a breaking load of 7 kg of circular cross-section or a special line for feeder fishing, such as “Albacore” or the like, with a diameter of 0.17-0.12 mm.

I wish good luck in the new fishing season to the entire “brotherhood”!

Barcelona and Real Madrid Set For 14-15 Season

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the most exciting teams in the world. The best players on the planet ply their trade in the Spanish Premiera Division and in mainly these two powerhouses.

Last year, Atletico Madrid got the better of both Barca and Real in the La Liga. Although they couldn’t snap up victory in the Champions League final against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, yet all over they had a great season.

The ten-time European champions, Real, have yet another target this season and it is to win the Champions League again. No club side has ever won back-to-back Champions League trophies. To compete for all the major trophies, the Spanish giants have added a few marquee signings. Toni Kroos is one of those and he has justified his value to be called-up by one of the most successful clubs in the world. Kroos was phenomenal for the German champions, Bayern Munich, and was among the best players in Brazil, 2014 World Cup, which his national side eventually won.

Real not only, grabbed the World Cup winner, but they also convinced the best player of the tournament to sign with them. James Rodriguez was the star in Brazil and he lead his team quite far in the tournament. His tally of 6 goals helped him win the Golden Boot. It will be quite interesting to see how he would do at the Santiago Bernabeu under Ancelotti, who describes James as the player who would be Real’s future. On the other hand, the outgoing players are Nuri Sahin and Morata.

It is quite possible that Real win more silverware than previous season as the Galacticos look more powerful than ever.

Barcelona too, haven’t done bad in this summer transfer window. The Catalonian giants seized the opportunity to sign probably the best striker in the world right now. Luis Suarez is a flawed genius and he definitely attracts controversy. He would be out till October 25th and might feature in the first El Clasico of this season. In addition to the ex-Liverpool man, Barca have brought in Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Claudio Bravo, Ivan Rakitic and Jeremy Mathieu. Alexis Sanchez and Bojan Krkic are the players who were not needed by the new manager at Camp Nou.

Barcelona appeared pale last season and they would look to get back their domination in world football. Leo Messi would again be key for the Blaugrana and would be assisted by Suarez, Neymar and Iniesta. We can’t predict which team would do better than the other because of the sheer quality in both the sides.
