Last Minute Golf Tips to Hit the Ball in Right Direction

In today’s hectic world, it is getting harder and harder to find the time to hone your golf game whether on the driving range or on the course. It’s difficult enough to find 2 to 5 continuous hours to work in 9 to 18 holes. But what do you do when you only have a few minutes to practice or prepare for your round? For the busy golfer, here are a few last minute golf tips that can really help your game in very little time on the range or before your round.

On the Range

First, to get the most out of your limited time when you practice, make sure you spend a few minutes to define your practice agenda, needs and focus areas before you practice. In other words, practice with a purpose!

Second, it is critical to realize that sixty percent or more of your golf score occurs within 100 yards of the hole. Here’s a quick golf tip – to most efficiently lower your golf scores, devote half or more of your limited time practicing the short game (pitching, chipping and putting).

Here is a last minute golf tip 30 minute routine for the range designed for efficient practice.

· 5 Minutes: Pre-swing warm up (stretching and quarter-speed swings)

· 5 Minutes: Hit short chip/pitch shots

· 5 Minutes: Hit full pitch shots 30 to 60 yards

· 10 Minutes: Full swing – alternate among irons ( 9-iron, 7-iron, 5-iron) and Driver

· 5 Minutes: Short, mid-range and long putts

Pre-Round

If you have 15 minutes or less before your round, here are two last minute golf tip routines to help you play your best.

· 5 Minutes: Pre-swing warm up (stretching and quarter-speed swings)

· 3 Minutes: Putt on practice putting green at 30, 9, 3 foot distances with goal of getting “feel” of green speeds

· 5 Minutes: Hit 7-iron shots – 3 at half speed and 3 at full speed

· 2 Minutes: Hit 3 to 4 driver shots with emphasis on rhythmic, fluid swing.

· Relax on the tee box – take deep breaths and enjoy the scenery!

If you have 5 minutes or less to practice, the most critical thing to do and remember is stretch before your round and relax as much as possible.

Though these last minute golf tips are relatively simple, they can go a long way to help you play your best golf when you are time constrained. Happy golfing!

Breast Implants – Choosing the Best Implant Size For You

Until recently, most patients never discussed breast implant shapes or profiles with their plastic surgeons. If you chose a certain size breast implant, you would receive a predetermined amount of forward projection from that size implant. Now, you can choose size and, if you like, have that size stick out more or less than the base diameter would usually dictate. The first choice to make is the shape; the second choice is the profile. Shape refers to the actual shape of the implant, round or anatomical. Profile refers to the distance the implant projects off the chest wall. The third Choice is the surface of the implant

Shapes

Because women’s breasts take many sizes and shapes, and because goals for breast enhancement vary from patient to patient, there are different shapes available. For some women, the round provides the best results; for others, a better choice is an implant shaped like a teardrop. The appearance of breasts is highly affected by shapes.

Considerations include:

  • The patient’s body type
  • The amount of breast tissue the patient has.
  • Breast implant placement
  • Surgical incision choice

Round

Of the two implant shapes, the round breast implant is the most common type used for breast augmentation. A round implant is shaped like a flattened sphere. Certain types of round implants can enhance the forward projection of the breasts, which would otherwise require larger implants with wider bases. For women who desire fullness in the upper poles of their breasts, the round is a good choice.

Many women choose round because they tend to provide the greatest amount of lift, fullness, and cleavage. Some women, however, feel that the results produced with round implants appear artificial, so they seek out more natural-looking alternatives. A round breast can have a smooth or textured surface. Due to a round symmetrical shape, it does not pose the risk of rotation. The cost of a round breast implant is generally less than a teardrop (contoured).

Tear Drop

As the name indicates, a teardrop, also known as a contoured breast implant, is shaped like a teardrop. Breasts attain a more gently sloping contour with teardrops. Although the upper poles of breasts that have teardrop implants are not as full as those of breasts that have round, teardrop-shaped implants often provide greater projection by volume. Of the two breast implant shapes, a teardrop is more expensive than a round breast implant, a consideration for those concerned with breast augmentation cost. A teardrop requires a textured surface to prevent rotation because, with teardrops breasts can become distorted if the implant rotates. This is not a concern with round breast implants.

Surfaces

After you have made the choice to have breast implant surgery, you must decide between two breast implant texture options: smooth and textured. On this page, we describe the differences between the two types to provide you with a better understanding so you can make an informed decision.

There is great debate amongst surgeons which is better. Some studies have shown fewer complications – specifically capsular contraction – with textured implants, but others have shown the opposite. The shells of both saline and silicone gel breast implants are made of silicone elastomer (rubber), and the surface area is either smooth or textured. The main purpose of textured implants is to promote tissue adherence to the irregular surface and hold them into place. Therefore, a textured surface is used with contoured implants because they have a top and bottom, and rotation or movement distorts the breast shape. On the other hand, most round implants have a smooth surface because the breast shape is not affected if the implant rotates in the breast pocket.

Smooth

Smooth implants are used in roughly 90 percent of breast augmentation surgeries today. A smooth breast implant is able to move freely in the breast pocket in which it is placed. Many women eel that smooth implants have a more natural feel and appearance than textured implants. Smooth implants usually have thinner shells than textured implants, which makes them the softer choice of the two. Additional benefits of a smooth breast implant include implant longevity, lower patient cost, and reduced risk of rippling.

Textured

It was originally thought that the textured surface of an implant could reduce the possibility of capsular contracture, a potential complication of breast implants. However, because evidence is not clear and there is no consensus as to whether a textured breast implant actually reduces the possibility of capsular contracture, many doctors prefer to use smooth, round implants. Smooth implants are often placed under muscle tissue in order to help avoid possible capsular contracture.

Textured breast implants have an irregular surface that is intended to hold the implant in place. The scar tissue that naturally forms around the implant conforms to the textured surface and “grabs” the implant to prevent it from being displaced or turning in the pocket, which could result in distortion of the breast shape. A textured surface is used with contoured implants to prevent movement because the teardrop shape is distorted if any rotation occurs. Textured implants were designed to lessen the risk of capsular contracture, which is an excessive contraction of the scar capsule that surrounds the implant, by preventing scar tissue from forming around the implant in a uniform manner. However, studies have proven inconclusive and no firm evidence exists to support the theory that textured implants reduce the risk of capsular contracture.

If a patient requires implant removal due to capsular contracture or another complication, it may be more difficult for the surgeon to remove the implant because of the adherence of tissue to the textured surface. The shells of textured breast implants are slightly thicker than smooth implants.Textured implants are more firm and carry an increased risk of rippling that is visible or can be felt through the skin, especially for women with smaller breasts. There is also a small increase in the chance that the implant shell will rupture.

Profiles

When breast augmentation patients meet with their Thailand surgeons to discuss the many implant options that are available to them, they not only need to decide on a specific sized implant, but determine the amount of forward projection that is appropriate for the patient as well. In the past, implants came with a standard projection, or profile, based on the size of the implant that women choose. Today, surgeons and patients can work together to select an implant that is not only the right size, but also provides the desired projection and cleavage. The most important criterion for profile selection is the base diameter of the breast.

This is easily measured by the surgeon with a calipers or measuring tape. The implant diameter must be less than the breast base, or it will be “squeezed” circumstantially. This will force it to scallop, or ripple around the outer edge, creating a range of other problems. Among these is visible rippling; It has been observed of much less rippling since the high profile implants became available, because the base diameter can be matched more precisely.

Low Profile

The low profile implant shell is wider (larger diameter) and flatter (less height or depth) than moderate profile breast implants. This implant style is commonly used for women who have a wide broad chest frame. The extra width of the implant shell will fill the chest anatomy correctly, achieving a natural look and realistic cleavage. The implant will not project as far off the body as other implant styles, making it the right choice for women who want fullness, but not an overly round and obviously enhanced look. The main criteria used to select low profile implants are the base diameter of the breast and dimensions of the chest. The implant should be smaller than the base diameter of the natural breast mound, which is often substantial in wider framed women.

Moderate Profile

Moderate Plus Profile

Moderate plus implants are a half step compromise between traditional moderate profile implants and popular new high profile implants. The moderate plus profile is perfect for women who want a bit more projection than is typically provided by a moderate profile, but not as much projection as is found with the high profile shell.

Moderate plus describes the distance the implant will project off the chest wall, once they are surgically placed inside the breast.

High Profile

High profile breast implants are a great innovation in breast implant design. First available in the early 1990’s, high profile implants have filled the specific needs of many patients perfectly, helping them to achieve a pleasing breast esthetics and an extremely natural shape and contour. High profile implants have also become a favorite of many cosmetic surgeons and are recommended to many patients due to their excellent surgical results.

High profile implants project the further off the chest wall, when compared to other common implant profiles. The high profile implant will achieve this projection by having a smaller base diameter than an identically sized (in cc’s) moderate or low profile implant shell. By decreasing the diameter of the shell, but keeping the same fill volume, the manufacturer is able to increase the depth or forward projection.

High profile implants are perfect for women with a narrower chest frame who still want a considerable size increase during their breast augmentation surgery. Instead of using a wider base diameter moderate implant, the doctor will choose a narrower high profile shell which will suit the patient’s anatomy and project out to accommodate the volume of the filler material. High profile implants are also commonly indicated for patients who are undergoing a combination breast enlargement and donut mastopexy procedure. This modified mastopexy, like many breast lift operations sometimes squares off the breast shape slightly, making it appear wider and less round. The shape of the high profile implant shell restores the rounded shape of the breast, while still allowing the considerable benefits of the mastopexy lift.

While some studies say that these high profile shells reduce visible wrinkling and rippling, the reasoning given is generally incorrect. It is not anything to do with the design of the implant which decreases this noticeable unwanted breast enlargement complication. it is simply a better anatomical fit. Wrinkling and rippling often occurs when a women with a narrow chest frame desires large implants. The base diameter of her natural breasts is smaller than the base diameter of her implants. Obviously, the implant will be compressed and distorted by the small confines of the pocket inside her breast. This distortion causes the wrinkling and rippling which can be so unappealing to many affected patients. By utilizing a proper fitting high profile implant with a base diameter smaller than the natural breast width, the surgeon can guarantee a good fit with no implant shell distortion. The patient’s size request is accommodated by the increase in forward projection creating a flawless augmented, butvery natural looking breast.

Ultra High Profile

Ultra High Profile implants available are through Mentor, this implant provides the narrowest base and highest projection. They are only available in Round shape and up to 495cc. Ultra High profile implants are perfect for women with a narrower chest frame who still want a considerable size increase during their breast augmentation surgery. Instead of using a wider base diameter implant, the doctor may choose the ultra high profile if the high profile is not enough projection. This may suit the patient’s anatomy and project out to be able accommodate the volume of the filler material.

There are two ways to increase projection in an implant. The first way is to add more volume to the implant. The other way to add projection is to make the base (diameter) of the implant smaller. Thus for any given volume, a smaller base has more projection. This is what ‘high profile’ implants do-they have a smaller diameter with a higher projection.

7 Irresistible Carp Bait Edges Refined For Winter Spring And All Year Round Fishing!

Revealed here are powerful easy homemade and readymade bait tricks and simple potent fishing edges that will catch you far more fish in winter and spring, when fishing is at its hardest at any time of year! Exploit these expert ready made and homemade bait secrets right now and reap big fish rewards surprisingly fast!

This point might appear simple but is overlooked by far too many anglers and that is that originally boilies were not used for carp fishing, but bait dough or paste was used. In fact there was a time when most of the biggest carp caught by the leading pioneering most famous anglers caught their carp not on boilies but on paste! When you use a boilie base mix mixed with eggs in cold water such baits easily last long enough in cold water with zero heating at all and such soluble baits most often work instantly!

The best time to test any new bait is in winter! If you simply test any new batch of baits on an easy fish carp water, the instant feedback will tell you immediately if you have just a bait that works or a real winner. You might be surprised to know that easy fish do not respond to all carp baits in the same ways. In fact in my own homemade bait testing using a commercial bait as a comparative control bait I can catch thus far up to 6 times as many carp using very small batches of homemade test baits as the commercial readymade bait has caught. This demonstrates a huge difference in success using alternative bait paradigms and the real bonus is that a genuine winter winner will work even better the rest of the year round!

In winter and spring one of the most effective ways to get bites is not to use boilies but instead to actually create baits made from broken down boilies, mixed with flavours and liquid foods and enhancers such as Talin, and powdered and liquid palatants and salty substances such as Belachan powder. It will definitely surprise you to see the difference yourself if you try this tactic and the power of it is that your bait really will work from the centre outwards right through, and not just from the surface like conventional egg sealed boilies! This method means you can exploit your favourite readymade boilie but make it far more functionally effective in cold dense water!

This might seem an odd trick but it is so well proven in my own fishing in the toughest of cold conditions that I must recommend this bait edge! Instead of using conventional stick mixes or crushed boilies in PVA webbing or solid bags, make your own homemade mixture using completely alternative materials and soak these in neat flavours and in liquid foods. For instance I soak crushed hemp seed in liquid Robin Red, and soak maggots in CC Moore Red Venom, and form your PVA bag or web mix from very loose materials such as molasses meal, enzyme treated liver, with CC Moore vanilla extract powder which is rich in oleoresins, salts and sugars all of which are absolutely ideal for cold water conditions!

CC Moore sweet fruit enhancer is a natural ester and essential oil based product which has been enhanced with sweeteners and appetite stimulators and I use it in all my baits alongside any other liquids. I used to make my own versions for years especially for cold water conditions and this is a readymade version which I have used with outstanding success in winter and indeed the heat of summer too. I use much higher levels in winter in summer than are recommended.

Bait substances work by altering things such as hydrogen concentration in the water, and carp are so sensitive to such differences in the water that you need to be exploiting this fact in making your baits far more easily detectable by carp. A very effective method to do this is as simple as increasing the level of flavour in your bait. For instance mixing butyric acid with Scopex flavour and doubling or trebling the recommended levels for your winter and spring baits and using these at different depths in the water column not just on the bottom! Test this kind of approach on easy waters in winter using your standard readymade bait as a control bait for comparison and you will see the difference in fish feedback believe me!

I have always found that breaking standard recommended bait substances rules by using real fish feedback testing is exceptionally beneficial with new homemade bait batches and adapted readymade bait because carp break our rules all the time and you can surprise them!

It really helps if you have methodically tested specific products and their components as a consultant as I have been doing for CC Moore and other companies over the years. I am only interested in one thing and that is the truth about what works best! Revealed in my unique readymade bait and homemade bait carp and catfish bait secrets ebooks is far more powerful information look up my unique website (Baitbigfish) and see my biography below for details of my ebooks deals right now!

How To Be A Well-Rounded Musician

A well-rounded musician is someone that embraces a variety of musical styles and skills in such a way that each musical style musical skill becomes a natural part of their performance identity. It is the aspiration of all teachers to be able to encourage their students to appreciate these various skills; this offers opportunities to each student to embody all of the elements to enrich their musical journey.

You might be asking yourself, “what are some of the skills associated with being a well-rounded musician?” The following list will offer some insight:

1. Playing in a variety of styles.

Learning to play in one particular style works for most students yet from time to time, students become antsy to learn new skills. A good music instructor will allow students to try out a variety of styles of music during their studies such as classical, pop, rock, jazz, country, improvisation, or writing original pieces. It is important to note that all students will have their own personal limitations of musical appreciation or physical ability. As such, not all students will embrace every style of music that is available to them. It is the job of the music instructor to appreciate the interests of the student and cater the lessons around the styles of music that will speak to the student. In all of the lessons that I teach, I encourage all students to learn at least one piece a year in a style that they might not otherwise wish to play: students that are studying jazz music must learn to play a piece of classical music and vice versa.

2. Reading music and playing by ear.

In the music studio of every teacher, we work with a variety of students that all have a variety of musical talents. Some students are strong readers, they can naturally see the music on the page and decipher the code to play the music on their instrument. Other students have a natural interest and talent for listening to the music that they play. These students listen well to the music that is around them and can naturally perform these sounds in a coherent way on their instrument.

In both cases, each student has mastered an important skill, yet these skills offer only a certain amount of success. In my personal journey, I have learned the steps that are necessary to amalgamate the skills of listening to my playing while reading the music on the page. This amalgamation creates not only a technically proficient performance, a sensitivity to the performance by listening to the music being created creates a further dimension that goes beyond what is written on the page.

3. Appreciation of working in a group setting vs. solo setting

Pianists are trained from the first lesson to work as soloists. Let’s face it, the piano is an instrument that can hold its’ own, it is a lone wolf. I remember in highschool having the opportunity to play music in a variety of group settings. I was a trombone player in my high school concert band, I was piano accompanist for my high school concert choir.

I also had summer jobs working as a pit musician for a local theater company playing keyboard 2 parts (synthesizers, strings sounds, etc). These activities were a lot of fun that required the same style of practicing that I completed on the piano. The outcome of a solo practice session on my trombone was different at home, I was playing only one melodic line. This activity (at times) was tedious, it was lonely. However, when all of the members of the concert band got together for rehearsal or for a performance, all of the parts came together to create beautiful music.

Encouraging students to join a band, work together in small ensembles, or to play duets offers a different series of opportunities and challenges that will enrich their learning environment. Each musician has the opportunity to enjoy working together in a group to collectively make music that is meaningful for each other. It is also a lot of fun!

Conclusion

It is my hope that all music instructors, music students, and parents embrace the various opportunities for making music in a meaningful way, your lives will be enriched as a result.

Mental and Physical Fatigue for Golf

In two days, the last major of the year begins in St. Louis at Bellerive Country Club. The last major is the PGA Championship, where several of the world’s best gather to compete to win a long desired major before the year ends. This year has a different feel as the best players in the world rankings are the top of their game. It is going to take a special four days of golf to win this tournament and that person will probably be mentally exhausted. At this point in the year, all the golfers in this tournament have been playing a lot of golf and may be experiencing some fatigue. I want to focus on physical and mental fatigue, in relation to the PGA Championship and how my business MentalGolfGrind approaches these topics.

At MentalGolfGrind, we have several techniques that can be used to help solve some of these problems that may happen before, during, or after a round of golf. Physical fatigue happens to most golfers and it usually happens at the end of a round. To be physically read for a full round of golf, it may be a good idea to set out a time during your day to walk. Carrying a 25 pound bag for a 4 hour round can be a bit exhausting and there is no better way to prep than walking during your free time when you are not golfing. Working out or lifting helps you become stronger, which is recommended, but if you want to overcome physical fatigue, walking helps immensely. It preps you for walking a full 18 and there will not be any surprises in store. Professional golfers do usually have this problem, because they are walking 18 holes of golf nearly every day and are also on the feet doing other activities. If you are an amateur and are experiencing physical fatigue, try walking a little more or working out, see what it does for your game.

In terms of mental fatigue, there are some things you can do to avoid being mentally exhausted. During a round of golf it is important to focus on other things than just golf. If you have play competitors, keep up your spirit by having a chat with your friend. It is easy to get down on yourself after a couple of bad shots and this leads to becoming mentally drained. Keeping your energy up by chatting, staying on your feet, having a snack, playing a mini game, and several other activities you can to keep your mental energy high. We want to avoid getting caught in the exhaustion of a round, where someone just walks up to a shot and hits it with no care, because they feel that their round is over. The fact is that your round is never over until the last stroke is hit. Focus on getting through your round and hitting your go to shots to finish off your round. You do not want to leave regret on the course and mental exhaustion leads to regretting some of the shots you hit. This is why you will see a lot of professionals that play well at the end of the round, because they feel more freed up now and have nothing to lose mentally. Try some of the techniques I have mentioned and see if you mental game feels to be more strong.

How to Get Your Ex Girlfriend Back – Hit a Wall? Go Round it – Brilliant (Slightly Devious) Ways

Before you do anything it is useful to try and understand your love(er). Of course, deep feelings of sexual attraction and desire are huge motivators but true love runs deeper than that. Words like consider, take into account, respect, favour, affection, honour, involve, concern, connect with, and interest add real value and meaning to a loving relationship – especially for a woman. So, if responding to your base instincts is your primary motivator you might want to reconsider your options and not waste your time thinking about how to get your ex girlfriend back.

If, however, you believe you have lost someone rather special and want her back – you will have to keep those words (clues) in mind as you begin the process of getting her back.

In order to break down that wall you will have to ‘think’ differently and adopt a totally different approach. But, moderate to high emotions and rational thinking, are mutually incompatible. The reason for this is found in the stress response – it can make you do and say really dumb things.

When it clicks in hormones that trigger your emotion also suppress (or switch off!) your ability to think straight. When you become aroused and ‘high’ on emotion you are left (brainless) – with nothing but instinct and this always works against you as you try to figure out how to get your ex girlfriend back.

Think about heated arguments. All wound up and unable to think straight both parties tend to say and do things they regret later on because they can’t and don’t think of the consequences. If you’ve been begging, pleading or stalking your ex – it is all instinctive, unthinking behaviour driven by the stress response. It never works. Hell, – the stress response might even go some way to explain why you broke up in the first place!

To be in control and able to think – you need to act to counter the stress response. The way to do that is to calm down. If you do something to calm yourself your ability to think rationally returns. There are many ways to calm down and you should choose something that works for you. But, one of the most effective ways – is exercise.

When you work out you get a shot of ‘feel good’ endorphins which make you feel better and all your emotions subside because exercise reduces the levels of stress hormone (Cortisol) in your bloodstream. As you calm down you’ll find yourself thinking rationally again.

It’s important to understand that in all your discussions with your ex girlfriend (and anybody else for that matter) if you are the one who is more able to manage your emotion – YOU are the one who is most likely to get their way.Once you’re calm and able to ‘think’ you can start the real work on how to get your ex girlfriend back with a sense of purpose. Everything you do will become easier.

It’s about control. We all have a deep need for a sense of control and if we lose it we will ALWAYS act to get it back. Your ex girlfriend is not immune to this.

Without being smart or malicious – you need to make your ex girlfriend feel as if she is losing her sense of control. The way to do that is to confuse her by being unpredictable. Surprise her in ways that are important to her (remember the clues?) and she will be forced to stop, and figure out what happened just to retain that feeling of being in control and understand what is going on.

In many ways she will have to change the way she sees you and even change some of her memories about you just to explain what you did or said. If she is unable to explain it she will start to ask questions about you. Then you will know she is interested in you.

Your first step is to stop pursuing her. Why? – Because you’re a guy. That’s what you’re expected to do! If you have been pursuing her – suddenly stop! Show her that the future isn’t as predictable as she thought it was. Be available for her but add an element of mystery. Become somewhat elusive and ‘hard to get’.

If you are prepared to make some changes in ways that matter to her, deliver slightly disturbing surprises such that she is forced to re-evaluate what she thinks and believes about you and create desire and attraction by improving yourself – you can get your ex girlfriend to change her mind – and do it willingly – even to the point of begging YOU to take HER back!

Follow your heart – but always use your head!

The 7 Macrominerals – Essential Nutrients For All Round Health

The macrominerals are the seven main minerals that your body needs to function properly. They support your body with a wide range of functions including maintaining fluid balance, promoting metabolism and regulating blood pressure. In this article I will be covering each of the seven in more detail.

1) CALCIUM

Calcium was discovered by Sir Humphry Davy in 1808. Approximately 1.5% of an average adult’s bodyweight is made up of this nutrient. The main role of calcium in the body is to promote strong bones and teeth. It also helps control blood pressure, muscle contractions and nerve transmission.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium increases with age. Children aged 0-6 months require just 210mg per day whilst adults aged 51 years and older require a much higher 1200mg per day. Dairy products are often the best source of this macromineral with cheese (721mg per 100g), milk (114mg per 100ml) and yoghurt (200mg per 100g) containing very high levels.

Overdosing on calcium by consuming 3000mg per day or more can lead to dehydration, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting. Failing to consume the RDA can be just as bad and may cause high blood pressure, muscle cramps and osteoporosis (reduced bone density).

2) CHLORIDE

Chloride was discovered as a compound by Carl Whilhelm Scheele in 1774. It was later isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1807. Around 0.15% of an average adult’s bodyweight is chloride. This macromineral has a number of roles in the body which include assisting with the production of glandular hormones, maintaining blood pressure, maintaining fluid balance, removing waste materials from the body and supporting metabolism.

The RDA for chloride increases with age. Children aged 0-6 years require around 180mg per day whilst adults require 750mg per day. The best food sources of this nutrient include butter (1300mg per 100g), olives (300mg per 100g) and whole grain bread (860mg per 100g).

Whilst there is no recommended upper limit (UL) for chloride some people have experienced breathing difficulties, fluid retention and high blood pressure if they eat extremely large amounts. Not consuming enough of this nutrient can also have adverse effects on your body leading to muscles spasms and weakness.

3) MAGNESIUM

Magnesium was initially discovered by Henry Wicker in 1618 in the form of ‘Epsom Salts’. It was later isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy. Approximately 0.05% of an average adult’s bodyweight is magnesium. It is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the human body which include promoting metabolism, helping the muscles and nerves relax and supporting healthy bone growth.

The RDA for magnesium increases with age. Children aged 0-6 months need just 30mg per day of this macromineral whilst adults aged 31 years and older require considerably more (men need 420mg per day, women need 320mg per day and pregnant women need 360mg per day). The richest food sources of this nutrient are quite varied with almonds (279mg per 100g), brazil nuts (229mg per 100g) and spinach (87mg per 100g) all containing high levels.

Consuming 1000mg or more of magnesium per day can lead to a number of negative symptoms including diarrhea, fatigue and stomach cramps. Failing to get enough of this nutrient can also have negative effects and cause muscle cramps, nausea, numbness and vomiting.

4) PHOSPHORUS

Phosphorus was discovered by accident in 1669 during an experiment where the German alchemist Henning Brand tried to convert metals into gold. It represents around 1% of an average adult’s bodyweight. The main role of phosphorus is to work in conjunction with calcium and promote the development of strong bones and teeth. It also activates the B-complex vitamins and assists in the production of the genetic information carriers – deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).

The RDA for this macromineral varies with age. Children aged 0-6 months need to consume just 100mg per day of this nutrient. This requirement increases to 1250mg per day for children aged 9-18 years old but then drops to 700mg per day for adults aged 19 years and older. High protein foods are the best way to get your daily phosphorus with beef fillet steak (265mg per 100g), cheddar cheese (520mg per 100g) and chicken (190mg per 100g) all very rich sources.

Excess phosphorus in the body is very rare and often only develops as the result of kidney disease which then leads to calcification of the soft tissues (a condition where calcium is deposited on the soft tissues which causes them to harden). Not having enough phosphorus in the body is also very rare and usually only develops as a side effect of certain diseases. When a deficiency does develop it can lead to anemia (a low red blood cell count), osteomalacia (softening of the bones) and weakness.

5) POTASSIUM

Early humans were aware of potassium compounds but it was not isolated until 1807 when Sir Humphry Davy managed to extract this nutrient from vegetable alkali. Approximately 0.35% of an average person’s bodyweight is potassium. It has multiple roles in the body which include maintaining fluid balance, promoting muscle growth, regulating blood pressure and supporting healthy metabolism.

The RDA for potassium increases with age. Children aged 0-6 months need to consume 400mg per day whilst adults aged 19 years and over need to consume a much larger 4.7g per day. Plant based foods are very rich in this macromineral with bananas (350mg per 100g), dried apricots (1880mg per 100g) and spinach (490mg per 100g) being particularly good sources.

Your body controls blood levels of this nutrient very tightly so overdoses are rare and normally only occur as the result of disease or infection. The symptoms of potassium overdose include diarrhea, nausea and ulcers. Deficiencies are also uncommon and normally only develop as the result of digestive problems. The symptoms of being deficient in this nutrient include confusion, dry skin and muscle cramps.

6) SODIUM

Awareness of sodium compounds dates back to ancient times but it was not isolated until 1807 when Sir Humphy Davy made the breakthrough. Around 0.15% of an average adult’s bodyweight is sodium. It has a number of roles in the body which include keeping minerals soluble in the blood, maintaining joint flexibility, promoting healthy metabolism and supporting the body’s vital organs.

The RDA for this macromineral is 1600mg for both men and women although individual suffering from high blood pressure are advised to keep their intake below 1500mg per day. The richest food source of sodium is table salt which contains 38850mg of this nutrient. However, cheddar cheese (610mg per 100g), olives (1800mg per 100g) and prawns (1590mg per 100g) are also good food sources.

Eating too much sodium is a very common problem and can lead to fluid retention, high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney disease. Contrastingly, not eating enough sodium is rare and is usually caused by other conditions removing this nutrient from the body. When deficiencies do occur it can cause confusion, headaches and nausea.

7) SULPHUR

Awareness of sulphur dates back to Biblical times but it was not recognised as an element until 1777. At this time French chemist Antoine Lavoisier proved to the scientific community that it should be classed as one. Approximately 0.25% of an average person’s bodyweight is sulphur. The main function of this macromineral is to treat joint and skin conditions. It also helps keep the hair, nails and skin healthy and supports proper metabolism.

There is no official RDA for sulphur although most sources suggest you should try to consume between 800mg and 1000mg per day. Protein rich foods contain high levels of this nutrient with brazil nuts (290mg per 100g), chicken (300mg per 100g) and eggs (180mg per 100g) all being very good sources.

Consuming too much or too little sulphur rarely has adverse effects. In fact there are no reported overdose symptoms and deficiencies only affect people who consume a very low protein diet. When people do become deficient in sulphur it can lead to arthritis, circulatory problems, inflammation and skin problems.
