If Content is King who is Queen?

It’s been said again and again, when it comes to getting people to visit your site (and stay there for more than 5 seconds), the quality of your content rules supreme. But once you’ve bowed to interest, saluted relevance and kow-towed to originality, who else must you pay homage to for recognition in the court of website stickiness?

The two jewels in the crown of Presentation, for it is of course Presentation who is Queen, are structure and graphical design. Let’s take a very brief look at them both.

Structure

We’re interested here in how you order the contents of your site, in how you link the different components and sections together. Your objective is to make the experience of browsing your site as straightforward as possible for your visitors.

So how do you go about achieving a clear, intuitive structure? For larger more complicated sites it helps to draw a chart of all the pages, showing how they connect to each other (this process isn’t such a bad idea for smaller sites either). Try and keep everything logical and stick to the ‘3 click rule’ as much as possible. (The ‘3 click rule’ – a user shouldn’t have to click more than 3 times to get to a page).

Once you’ve worked out a logical site structure, the basis for your navigation system should pop out. Don’t go and spoil it all by using a fancy (usually Flash) navigation system that’s frustratingly difficult to work out!

Graphical design

What you do with your design is generally down to personal taste and branding requirements. Take a look on the Internet and you’ll see successful designs from the extremely detailed to the minimalist.

Note that whilst people will say ‘but look at Google’ to justify a plain (ugly!) design, well chosen colour schemes and visual interest will give your site a positive boost.

No matter what style you go for, there are some rules that will always apply:

  • Be consistent, the look shouldn’t change across the site
  • Busy backgrounds hardly ever work
  • Take it easy on the flashing ads and graphics
  • Watch out for clashing colours
  • Dark text on light backgrounds work best
  • The fewer fonts and text colours there are, the better
  • Use high quality images and graphics

Logical structure and pleasing design make for intuitive navigation and an easier more enjoyable browsing experience. With just a little thought you’ll be rewarded with visitors who pay more attention to your content and not the pain and effort needed to get to it.

Dancing Queen

Eying the straight jeans tucked into the boots, the long sweaters, the dolman sleeves, the platform shoes and disco ball I recently saw in a store, I knew the sales woman, who looked 25, had no idea of what life was like here in New York City in the late 70’s and 80’s. A young taxi driver treated me like royalty because I told him I had seen “Queen” in concert, and I just couldn’t bring myself to rattle off all the rock concerts I had been to-or tell him that later, I had spent every Friday night dancing at the clubs: Studio 54, Xenon, Ice Palace. I have happy memories of my girlfriend and I prepping and primping for Friday night, THE night, OUR night. It took days to figure out what we would wear, to find the perfect belt, shoes, or to figure out what we were doing with our hair; we bought Paul Mitchell “SCHPRITZ” (which was really glue in a plastic pump pray bottle) by the gallon, so we could go dancing.

When I approach the step climber in the gym, my iPod is my master and Donna Summer ‘s ” Enough is Enough” is still enough to get the blood pumping through me… If you see me up there, swaying and rotating with moves that would defy the average person’s (of my age) balance… I promise I will not fall. I can dance, step, and read at the same time.

In the early 80’s I was an aerobics flunkie, and I am no runner– I am more like a pile driver when I do run…. I even tried pole dancing –but I was like Lucille Ball on pot when I approached the pole, gracefully reached up, hoisted myself onto it, and promptly fell, bruising my arm and leg on the way down. I am, to say the least bored by walking on a loop, so the treadmill is not for me. Forget spinning to nowhere… no can do. But when I am “stepping” that low center of gravity is, very useful. Some mornings I can be found in the gym, quite early, gyrating on the machine, reading glasses perched on my nose and a day’s worth of e-mail, trade papers and other stuff to pour through piled up on the floor next to me. Throwing the papers down from my lofty mount I make piles of the must keeps, and the disposable. Along with everything that floods my morning mind, it never occurs to me to care what anyone who sees this routine might think. I occasionally let loose the sounds of pieces of songs, and have provoked a few “SHUT UPS” from my fellow exercisers. But I don’t care. I am not embarrassed.

Every once in a while I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and think it is really pathetic or funny or maybe both, as I hope for one more year of my butt defying gravity and notice that my arms still look pretty good to me considering I am a Jewish woman of a certain age. I can’t afford to do what Demi Moore did –I am stuck with my elbows and knees for a lifetime.

The only images I have of myself dancing as a child were from my father’s 8 mm movie footage. There I was in ballet class, the whole class moving right, and I was going left, my finger up my nose. My sister became the ballerina, and I got piano lessons, guitar lessons, art lessons-anything to keep me from dancing –there was a reason for that-Recently at my company holiday party, as soon as the disco tunes started spinning, my young, and I mean very young dance partner whispered ” I don’t know how to dance like this, ” (Even though he did…) and I whispered back, ” I am the Dancing Queen, I won’t let you down…” Nine dances later, they were calling us John (Travolta) and Olivia (Newton John –) there is something to be said for that-considering I was absolutely born in a year when I could have been my partner’s mother. All the women I worked with thought I need a young guy, so I fulfilled their fantasy.

In 1977, I came to New York to attend NYU. It was an era that has never left me. The end of The Vietnam war in 1975 gave license to a generation of dreamers and schemers to do our own thing… The anger and fighting was over… The clothes, the make-up the hair, the music, the drugs the pre-AIDS promiscuity, Jane Fonda’s videos, all lent a certain allure and importance to the new found freedom of the era. The dancing sanctified it…When I arrived in New York I was really a hybrid, part aspiring Jewish American Princess, part activist, part hippie/bohemian artist, writer. It was here, through my love of clothes and make-up and my love of dancing that my true identity was born. I was at Bond’s, The Underground, The Limelight, Max’ Kansas City, and of course Studio and Xenon. If I am totally cool at all, I am totally cool for that. (Well maybe not totally cool) this information admittedly makes me old by lots of people’s standards. And yes Rent and Chorus Line were my favorite plays.

Those clubs created a platform for Madonna, Cher, Donna Summer, and a new kind of socializing that no matter where you went, it was all about how sexy you could look, and how many drugs you could do, and get yourself home at least by the next afternoon.. The man in the white suit was “the man…” no tie, lots of chest, chains and even tattoos. Unlike today’s techno, we had moves and the moves were everything. My girlfriend and I practiced all the best moves on each other, and our weekend attire– Gold lame, leopard skin, sequined bandeau tops, fat belts, stretch halter jumpsuits and lots of white and glimmer shimmer that glowed under the lights.

The door-screening policies of the era added that last element of excitement– to be rejected at the door would be the total failure of a whole week’s work. Better be model pretty and dressed right. Disco wear was never EVER acceptable for day wear, but for night it was the only possible way to be part of the action, and the more baudy and crazy and bosomy and glittery, the better. A man’s white satin jacket and a medallion resting on a tanned chest with an open neck shirt and the collar turned up, now vile and de rigueur, was considered hot.

In those days “Starbuck” was still just a figment of Charles Dickens imagination, an ATM was probably a sex toy, the concept of an “internet” probably lived in the bowels of some government, underground cavern. An “i-pod” would have been the definition of something botanical, “Twitter” would certainly be something describing post orgasm movements, “Facebook” would have been a magazine and research was still done in a library. (I had to learn the Dewey Decimal System-THE WHAT?) If we wanted to “hook up” we had to call our friends on a land line, and even wait for the phone not to be “busy”. Pay phones were actually a major convenience and not the obsolete relics they are today.

Barnes and Noble had one store in Greeenwich Village. Crazy Eddie on Greenwhich Ave. was the best place to buy a TV in New York City. And the idea of a superstore like Circuit City, or Best Buy or Comp USA (two of which are now failed) were all conveniences of the malls; if you had asked any of us, we would have bet money you never would have seen one of those in New York City. The subways were filthy and slow, their windows cracked, walls covered with graffiti and filled with the stench of homeless people (come to think of it, where did all those homeless people go?)

For we who grew up loving the Monkees and Mike Connor in Mannix and thought Isaac Hayes had the sexiest voice on the planet, we had our long hair cut into layers and were blowing it into carefully pulled coifs with that perfect back flip twist to give it the Farah Fawcett look. Charlie’s Angels were hot, Brooke Sheilds made her gorgeous entry as nothing came between her and her “Calvins”. Cher was still the “foxiest” thing around (when was the last time you heard that word?) in her Bob Macky dresses, Washington Square park (where I lived) was the center of the drug world and the whole world as far as I was concerned. Soho was cool and where the artsist’s hung out and where we would go to look in the shops and eat in the chic restaurants.

Sam Shepard was the new, edgy hot young playwright. Stephen Sondheim was doing his thing….Star Wars, The Deer Hunter, Annie Hall and Sophie’s Choice were the Oscar contenders and a young actress named Meryl Streep was being discovered. We didn’t have seven screens in a household, we had one, and even if our TV’s were big and bulky and black and white, we all knew where we were when President Kennedy was shot…and we all made sure we had a TV the day MTV launched. The first Cable systems were transmitted by large antennas – there were no satellites and no satellite radio.. A walkie Talkie was about as close to a cell phone as any of us would get and those were reserved for skiers or children. Had someone been sitting next to me in bar in the mid seventies and described my life tethered to a Blackberry, I would have asked that person what drugs they had in their drink, how could a fruit have given me instant connectivity over every aspect of my life? By the time I graduated college, Jennifer Beals was the hottest woman on the planet in Flashdance, with those cut shouldered sweatshirts, and her legwarmers…and then, she was an all grown up lesbian in the L word… go figure… guys…

I remember my first Sushi date, and my friend talking me through tasting the Wasabi -a journey that would change my life….

Blondie was the hot entry into the Punk scene with ex Max’s Kansas city waitress Debra Harry considered one of the sexiest women on the music scene. Debra Harry is 64 years old now. Betsy Johnson is 68 and about a mainstream as it gets and Patricia Feld dressed the girls in Sex in The City.

Even if I was drinking and drugging, and sexing it up… I got to work every day and I still have a decent work ethic. I can still see how the Jane Fonda burn contributed to my higher good, like it did in those classic workout videos. And so, when Dancing Queen here, steps up on those machines, the disco ball might have crashed down a long time ago, but I know, despite the fact that I obsess and fantasize about all the bodily changes that could make any plastic surgeon rich, my generation is the wealthiest, healthiest and most capable of changing the world… we gave over 100 billion dollars to charities last year, and that even with all the “threatening” and anxiety provoking things going on in the world, I am a part of all the goodness. I have NO complaints, and even if I look ridiculous in the gym, I love my i-pod, I love life and my neighbors who can see me through their windows will tell you-I am still dancing.

Queen Eleanor's Bower

Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward 1st, 'Hammer of the Scots,' and also of the Welsh for that matter, could well be described as an early advocate of holidays in Pembrokeshire, for she seemed to have a great love of the area .

When in 1289, Humphrey de Bohun 111 gave Haverfordwest Castle to Queen Eleanor, she spent large sums on the building having taken a particular fancy to it, say the historians. In the short time before her death at the end of 1290, she spent some time there and in that period borrowed £ 400 from two English notables of South Wales and records show that £ 360 and £ 47 were paid for carpentry work.

These were substantial sums in those days and historians say that the date of construction of the existing curtain wall and towers co-incides with her ownership. They appear to historians to have been an extension to the original building, with large windows indicating that they were a grand residence for the Lord of the Castle and his officials, allowing a splendid view of the town and the river port below.

Her holidays in Pembrokeshire were brief in view of her early death, but during her last year or so, she had a small garden built outside the caste walls, overlooking the town, and this is still known as Queen Eleanor's Bower or Arbor, although little remains to show what it must have been like. Holidays in Pembrokeshire visitors parking in the Castle Lake car park between the castle and the High Street will be able to see the grassy terraces where the Bower was. The romantically-minded holidays in Pembrokeshire patron can no doubt imagine the Queen looking down from her Bower, the Arbor fragrant with climbing roses, onto the walled town. It must have been an attractive sight with its five gates, three parish churches, its bridge, numerous mills, Dominican Friary and large Augustinian Priory.

Unfortunately, the present day holidays in Pembrokeshire visitor will find the friary, gates and mills all gone but the bridge, three churches and ruins of the Priory still there to be seen and visited. The Priory was subject to a 12-year-long archaeological dig by CADW, the Welsh Ancient Monuments agency and makes a fascinating visit with its restored cloister and its unique medieval garden. One can sympathise with Queen Eleanor that she only had a year in which to enjoy her new possession before she died aged only 49.

Queen Esther Beauty is Captured in Virtuessence of Esther Perfume Oil by Virtue & Valor

Queen Esther said when she must save her people and went to Great Persian King Ahasuerus, without his summons, which meant death for her, "…. And so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish. "

To be frank, I almost cry smelling this perfume oil. Never in my life, had I found a scent so beautiful, richly complex and deeply motivating. A fragrance that transform me into another dimension when women are praised high, not only for mere beauty nor sensuality – but for her good attitude, her courage to stand for the poor and her good deed.

Like a symphony, each aroma sings in harmony. First, the freshness of ylang-ylang burst open with zest of orange screaming. Too rare I found – or fall in love with – an opening consisting of ylang-ylang, which known for its strong aroma.

Not for long the aroma stayed, as sweet cinnamon smell – spiced with cloves – overpowered its predecessor. Recollecting my bad habit of putting much cinnamon powder on top of my Starbucks milky-coffee froth, I smiled instantly.

Gently, jasmine – soft, blooming – enveloped me like an intoxicating cloud, like a spellbinding mist. Feeling cleansed and relaxed, a true woman in me awoke. Talk about a lady's inner beauty; I felt like a princess running in my English garden, wearing my stunning ball gown, full of spirit of life.

Trapped in beauty, eventually I smelled the long-awaiting frankincense blended in my favorite wood of all time: sandalwood. I was thrown back to a quiet afternoon in a small church near my dorm when an Easter mass (in Latin) was held. The lingering odor of burning incense left a trace in mind.

As a whole, this is a complex perfume. Hours after first spray, when the substances mixed well with my body, a totally different smell in each body part came out. I could smell amber with frankincense out of my middle body part. And, on the back of my hand, I found jasmine and cinnamon. All of them mixed together on my wrist, layered with musk and vanilla.

Suitable for religious / school / family event, this fragrance can be used for some indoor-shopping, too. Strangely, somehow the sophisticated smell inspires you and uplifts your spirit. I have tried it twice: once when there was a need to read a boring legal document and second time when facing a management-meeting as scary as an uninvited-plea-meeting 'between Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus.

This perfume oil can be bought online at Virtue & Valor, Inc, a niche perfume house. Payment can be done via PayPal. Shipping took one week. And, yes, the perfume did arrive safe and sound.

Wiggles, Queen of the Wallow

Many days ago and on a small country farm there was lived a family of domestic pigs. Far away from his house, farmer Willigan made a pasture filled with animals. He had goats, cows, horses and pigs. They all lived together without many arguments or disagreements for the most part. Farmer Willigan raised the animals so he could have fresh meat in the winter months for his family and friends. Each year he would restock his animals so he always had a new assortment. He kept some for breeding, used some for his family to eat and sold some to other people. The horses and cows had hay to eat. The goats kept the pasture grazed well, and the pigs had a variety of things to eat including slop. You see slop is a country word for a mixture of all the scraps from the dinner table put into a big bucket. Farmer Willigan would then take the bucket and pours all the scraps into a trough. The trough was just a long metal container that held all the scraps and is long enough for many pigs to eat at once.

On one side of the pasture farmer Willigan dug a wide hole and filled it with fresh water. On the other side of the pasture was a pond for the animals to bathe in. He kept metal tubs filled with fresh water so all the animals could drink. Farmer Willigan prided himself in his farm and always kept it clean and neat. Well, that was until his last litter of pigs came along.

Margaret was a sow pig and her husband Albert was a boar hog. They had been married about a year when Margaret gave birth to ten little suckers. A sucker is a little baby still nursing from its mother. They grew with leaps and bounds. They were the cutest little piglets you ever did see. They were as pink as bubble gum and had the cutest little curly tails. One of the piglets was much smaller than all the rest and they called her Wiggles the runt. Margaret had to remind Albert to watch out for Wiggles for she was so tiny. They were afraid the big pigs would step on her or perhaps accidentally lie down on her.

“Mom! Can I go down to the pigsty with all the other pigs?” Wiggles squealed.

“Heaven’s no Wiggles! You must stay here with me and stop all you’re wiggling. We sure named you right because you wiggle all of the time. Now lie down here and drink your milk!” Margaret said as she pulled the little pink bundle closer to her. “Albert! You need to take all these others and let them get some water. Be careful and keep them around the edge. We don’t need any drowning’s.” She sighed.

Albert sat down near the edge of the wallow and began to tell all the children about their ancestors.

“You know you have ancestors. Ancestors are your grandfather and his father. They evolved in the forest fields and riverbeds in Europe and Asia. Those are far away places. They were real scavengers with powerful snouts. The snout is on the tip of your nose and they used it to root around in the riverbeds for food much like we still do. You see the snout to us is much like fingers to people like Mr.Willigan. Your ancestors had stiff hair on their bodies like you see on the big boar hogs here. They would wallow in the river beds to keep cool. Then they would cover themselves with mud to keep the pest off their skin. When they became stressed, they would head out for the riverbed to wallow in the cool water.” He continued.

“What will we do if we get stressed dad?” One of the piglets asked curiously.

“Oh piglets and suckers do not get stressed!” He laughed rolling his big round eyes. “Wallowing and rooting are two ways pigs cool themselves. Be careful not to drink the water in the wallow; only roll in it. The fresh water is for drinking. Just because there is water in the wallow does not mean you are to drink it.” He said hoping they were listening to his lecture. “Some pig’s potty in the water and it is not good to drink it. You might get sick!” He frowned.

The piglets loved wallowing in the mud and playing all day. It was so much fun to them. As the days went by the piglets grew and the girls became known as Gilts, and the boys Boar pigs. Only one thing was wrong. Wiggles did not grow like the other piglets. She remained much smaller than his brothers and sisters. She was, however a happy little pig who absolutely loved to wallow in the mud.

“Watch me roll Mama!” She called out. “I’m much faster than the others even if I am smaller.” She grinned.

She finally emerged from the wallow totally covered in black mud. The only thing you could see was her big pink eyes.

“You are the cutest little Wiggle. I’m so very proud of you and I love your long eyelashes. I’ve always wanted long eyelashes myself but mine are blonde and short.” She smiled blinking her eyes to show her the difference in their eyes.

Wiggles enjoyed the summer enormously as did all the piglets. On sunny days all the pigs covered themselves in black mud to stay cool. Wiggles just jumped in and rolled all she wanted to. All the other girls made fun of her because she loved to roll in the mud so much. She didn’t care. It was fun and she was a fun Gilt.

Cool weather began to chill the air and farmer Willigan began to think about which pigs he would take to the market and which ones he would keep for another year. Much to Wiggles surprise his father was chosen to take to the market.

“Don’t you worry your little self one bit?” Albert snorted. “I’m a big boar and I will be just fine. You take care of your brothers and sisters. We were not put here on this earth to stay forever. I’ll be just like your grandfather and your great grandfather. I’m a proud boar and don’t you forget it!” He smiled.

As thing happen all the time, the pigs were sorted out and some were used for food. Others were taken to the market and some traded to other farmers. No one wanted Wiggles because she was too small so she remained with farmer Willigan.

“Mama! Why did all the other pigs get to go and I have to stay here?” She questioned with big sad eyes.

“Oh honey! You are the runt or the smallest child. You don’t have as much fat on your tummy as most do. I suppose farmer Willigan will want to fatten you up for a while and as pretty as you are he will probably use you to have babies.”

“Babies! I don’t want babies! I want to find me a fellow first.” She grinned showing her pearly white teeth. “All the rest of the girls have fellows and I will too!” She flipped her snout up in the air and proceeded to march straight towards a young handsome male pig. Margaret smiled remembering how she had chosen Albert many months earlier. She surely missed him but she knew every good pig is called to serve their country.

Winter passed quickly. Green grass began to grow in the pasture for the goats. The rain had filled the wallow up to the top.

“Hallelujah! It’s time for us to roll in the wallow. The first one in is queen of the wallow!” Wiggles yelled across the pasture. “It’s pigsty time! It is where only the best sows wallow!” She laughed. “I’ll bet you a bowl of slop I’ll win this year” she giggled.

So Wiggles became known around the farm as queen of the wallow. She was indeed one of the best sows on Mr. Willigan’s farm and in that same year gave birth to five little suckers and one little runt she named Wigglesome. Mr. Willigan picked up Wigglesome and listened to him squeal and squeal he did.

“You are a fine little sucker even if you are the runt!” He said with a big smile on his face. “I remember when your mother was the runt and look how beautiful she is now!” He exclaimed putting the piglet back under his mother. “You will have to really work hard to earn the title of King of the Wallow!”

Queen Boudicca Fights the Romans

Queen Boudicca Fights the Romans

Did you watch Queen Boudicca fight the Romans on the History Channel? She looked very nice in a Christian Dior dress. Her arm pits were shaved like all good Iceni tribe women. You could see a slight white trace of underarm deodorant so we know that Queen Boudicca was not as barbaric as Tacitus said––or was she?

You can read about Queen Baudicca at [http://members.tripod.com/~ancient_history/boad.html]. The article is by S. Wilson. Please do not copy this article. Mr. Wilson does not want anyone to disregard his copyright. However, the article follows the History Channel or the History Channel follows Mr. Wilson, so you will get the complete story.

Here is what happened in a nutshell:

1. Queen Boudicca lived with her husband King Prasutagus and their two daughters. Nobody seems to know the names of the daughters, but when the king died, he bequeathed to them goods and property.

2. Procurator Decianus, a Roman administrator knew that such a bequest could be made only to Nero. He got angry and destroyed the peace that had lasted for some years between King Prasutagus and the Romans.

3. When Queen Boudicca objected to cruel and inhumane treatment by the Romans, Decianus had her beaten in public and had the Roman soldiers rape her daughters so that no one would marry them.

4. Queen Boudicca was upset by this turn of events. Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn. She joined forces with the Trinovantes and created a force much larger than the combined Roman forces in Great Britain. She attacked Camulodunu Poenius Postumus, sort of a resort town for retired Roman officers and their families. She was not interested in taking prisoners.

5. Paulinus who was mopping up on the Island of Mona or Anglesey (after clobbering my ancestors) got news of the attack. He moved ahead of his army on the Icknield Way (I think. The roads are very confusing), telling his legion commanders to take it easy on the 300 mile march as not to be too tired when called up on to fight a tribal army ten times their strength. He ordered Poenius Postumus, the commander of a Roman legion to meet him in the Midlands. Postumus refused. Later he, “customarily fell on his own sword for denying his troops the glory of battle.” (Note: go to [http://www.romans-in-britain.org.uk/inv_roads.htm] for a map of Roman roads and how they made them.)

6. Meanwhile, the angry queen is raising hell everywhere she goes. She bushwhacks and destroys the Ninth Legion. When Paulinus got to London, riding down Watling Road, he realized he could not defend it. He turned back toward his legends looking for a possible battlefield where an outmanned army could defeat a bunch of angry tribesmen led by a woman. What an insult! A woman leader.

7. Queen Boudicca attacked those that stayed behind in London (despite Paulinus’ warning for them to leave). She burned the town to the ground. Here is what Tacitus said: Those who were taken captive by the Britons were subjected to every known outrage. The worst most bestial atrocity committed by their captors was the following: They hung up naked the noblest and most distinguished women and then cut off their breasts and sewed them to their mouths, in order to make the victims appear to be eating them. Afterwards they impaled the women on sharp skewers run lengthwise through their entire body.

8. Paulinus found a suitable site for battle, an uphill grade that was forested on the back and sides of the battlefield. He had only about 10,000 men but they were well trained and could handle a frontal attack. They first slaughtered thousands of Queen Boudicca’s charging men and women fighters (who were mostly naked and painted blue) using javelins first then their short swords. Finally, they formed their famous wedge and drove the rebel army into a wagon train of the families of the Brits. They slaughtered every one in sight. The rebellion went of for some time after the battle but it had little force. Those who returned to their homes found no food because they had not planted their crops. The Romans continually harassed them and put them in slavery. Nero was not happy with Paulinus because he was too harsh. That weakened Paulinus’ political influence.

So what happened to Procurator Decianus, the Roman administrator, who caused this mess?

Why he ran off to Gaul.

Paulinus was very angry about that.

King Cash, Queen Cash Flow, and Prince Profit

It takes cash-on-hand to run a business. Cash allows bills to be paid, payroll to be met, and capital improvements to fuel expansion. Cash, however, depletes quickly and must be replenished by a steady cash flow stream for the business to survive, even in the most prosperous times. In the new economy, poor cash flow kills companies.

Cash vs. Cash Flow vs. Profit:

The common experience of preparing to wash your face provides a simple analogy for these complicated and intertwined financial metrics. Both the spigot and the drain represent cash flow which can be further defined as inflow (spigot) and outflow (drain). The water pouring into the sink bowl is analogous to the revenue flowing into the company. For cash inflow, it does not matter whether the product/service was sold at a profit or loss, only that revenues flow in. Conversely, all of the expenses of the firm, from the electric bill to insurance to payroll to vendor charges are represented by the drain. Just as water flows out of the sink bowl, cash outflows from the firm. The water accumulating in the sink bowl represents cash-on-hand. Finally, the increases (profit) or decreases (loss) in the amount of water in the sink bowl, from one measurable time to another, represent the profit of the company.

So, for example, a firm may measure profitability monthly, quarterly, and/or annually which means they are comparing the inflows of revenue minus the outflows of expenses to determine which was greater during the period. If inflows were greater, the company was profitable. If outflows were greater, the company operated at a loss.

Each measure of financial accomplishment is necessary. What’s more, increasing each measurement is essential to continued operations and growth.

King Cash:

King Cash rules the kingdom. The larger your firm’s pile of cash, the better you can sleep at night. Though savings does not solve problems, it does give you something unattainable otherwise: time. If the firm is operating in the red (un-profitable) or cash outflows are greater than inflows (negative cash flow), cash-on-hand buys you the desperately needed time to correct these problems. They will both need to be corrected to survive; cash buys you the time to figure out how to turn it around. Ironically enough, by definition, the cash your firm has now came from positive cash flows and profitability at some earlier point in the company’s history. It was neatly gathered together annually in the Retained Earnings line item of your Balance Sheet and stored in your savings account.

Absent actual cash-on-hand, the firm must turn to debt in troubled times. Unfortunately, banks and lenders are slow to loan cash to troubled companies. Thus, if your firm is in a crisis and you did not execute a financial disaster preparedness plan when times were better; there is little you can do other than to liquidate assets. If, on the other hand, all three metrics are up, now is the time to apply for, or raise, the firm’s credit line. This is best done with a recently signed large contract in-hand and the latest financial statements neatly printed and expertly bound.

Queen Cash Flow:

King Cash rules the kingdom as its head of state; but, Queen Cash Flow is its neck. And, everyone knows the neck turns the head. Thus, assuming your firm is not cash rich, the metric that rises above the others in demand for your attention is cash flow.

Imagine a situation where the company is profitable on paper, meaning it is selling its goods/services for more than the cost of delivering them; but, cash is not flowing. This would mean revenue is due in as Accounts Receivable; yet, has not arrived at the firm’s door. How long can a company survive? Assuming the firm has no cash-on-hand and no means of acquiring a quick, temporary infusion of cash (credit line), the question can be answered with another: how long will you and your co-workers continue working for a firm after a pay date has come and gone with no pay? Suffice it to say, the company’s demise is measured in weeks not months or years.

Prince Profit:

Companies are in business to make a profit – period. Without profit, there is no growth and corporate value diminishes as assets age and depreciate. Profit, like the Crowned Prince, must be treated with respect to prepare for the future. Profit can be overlooked in dire situations to satisfy King Cash and Queen Cash Flow. If, however, this is done for more than brief periods of time, the future of the company is in jeopardy.

Financial metrics are the royalty of the company. Each must be attended to and cultivated. As cash flows are increased, cash-on hand and profit increase over time as well. Though the economic times may be desperate, the rules of corporate finance never change. As complicated as these topics may seem, they can be boiled down into a very simple principle you probably learned growing up – “if momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.” Look after your cash flow and that positive cash flow will look after everything else.
