Negative Reaction to Good News – How Can That Be?

You would think that when dealing with a medical crisis that good news about your health would alleviate stress and anxiety. Personally, I was very surprised that after the initial elation of good news, a “down” feeling set in. It was almost like the good news was too much. It seemed like an odd response and in thinking about it I was inspired to write this article. Who would have thought that good news could produce anything but good feelings?

Let’s explore the dynamics of bad news and good news. (I addressed what to do when you get bad news in a prior article.)

Anticipation is the enemy because it produces anxiety and stress. When diagnosed with a serious or life-threatening illness the focus is on treatment. The anticipation is that the treatment will be successful or at least there is hope that it will be. But this is only the beginning of the journey. Eventually the doctors will check to see if the treatment is working or not. The anticipation and waiting for that first test is hard and emotional. After all, your family and friends are doing the same thing… waiting. This shared experience might feel like support or perhaps it will feel like you are responsible for their feelings too or something in between. Anticipation builds nervous energy inside coupled with negative projections and a sense of responsibility for how others will feel.

You get good news! The treatment is working. A wave of relief can be felt by everyone. There is happiness, celebration, and expectations of being well. The truth is that the waiting game just begins again for the next test and marker of your health. The next test and results follow. Perhaps it is good news again or perhaps you’ll get bad news. The anticipation rises again. You and your loved ones find yourselves nervous, on edge, and maybe a bit burned out with the process that you now know will continue unless the health crisis ends. The cycle starts again and anticipation gets worse especially if you have been yo-yoing between good and bad news.

Now I understand the “down” feelings after good news. The flame of expectation is lit again for yourself and those close to you. The expectation leads to anticipation, which leads to anxiety, stress and other feelings.

Feeling down upon hearing good news is also self-protection from the yo-yo effect of the cycle of positive and negative news. If you don’t get too excited then it won’t hurt so much if the news is negative or neutral (more waiting). If you are one of those who feel responsible for others’ feelings you may not even have the celebratory experience. Feeling down or neutral after good news protects you from disappointment, protects you from upset, and protects you from future projections about your health outcome.

Now you know the mechanism and the cycle that creates anticipation and the cause of low or neutral feelings upon hearing good news. Is it OK to handle news about your health status in this manner? Of course it is! There is no right or wrong with feelings. Each person manages them in their own unique way. Someone told me that staying neutral with the good and bad news is healthy. No big ups and downs allows the body to stay calm and in healing mode. The cycle and process of handling a health crisis is just what it is: a cycle, a process, life… your life.

Staying present will also help manage anticipation. That means paying attention to what is happening now instead of thinking about what has happened in the past and creating projections about what could happen or should happen in the future. These projections don’t help unless you are using positive imagery to work with your subconscious mind via hypnosis, for example, which is very effective to calm the mind, body and emotions and keep you present in the now. After all, the NOW is all you, your family, and friends can really handle and staying focused in the present moment makes things easier.

Exercise: If you find yourself in anticipatory anxiety, either from past experiences or projections about the future, you can do something about it!

Get into a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Take 3 or 4 slow breaths. If your mind is still running or you feel negative feelings, just notice them. No “fixing” is necessary. As you breathe slowly, let your body begin to relax. Your limbs might feel a little heavy, your back will let go of tension, and your neck will release along with your hands and feet. Your heart rate may slow as you relax. Just keep noticing your body, your thoughts, and your feelings. There is nothing to do at all but notice. Simply breathe and pay attention to either your right or left foot. Notice your toes, heal, arch, and ankle. Draw your attention up your calf and shin, behind your knee, and in front of your knee to your thigh and buttocks. Notice your hip. Keep breathing slowly. Draw your attention up your hip to your thigh, into the small of your back, up your spine, and to the side of your back. Notice your abdomen and belly. Become aware of your chest and the movement of your chest as you breathe.

Notice your shoulder, drawing your attention down through your arm to your hand and notice each finger. Shift back to your shoulder and become aware of your neck and throat. Then move your awareness to that side of your face, including your mouth, jaw, eye, forehead and ear and your forehead. Pay attention to the back of your head, moving up to the top of your scalp. Then shift your attention to the other side of your body and let your attention travel down from your head and scalp to your toes.

That is it. You will have an experience of being present with your body, your mind will quiet, and you will relax. If you like, you can move your awareness around your body 2 or 3 times which will deepen your experience. This process promotes relaxation, balanced emotions, and being present, the space from which you can best handle the experience of managing a health crisis.

Is Fake News a Security Risk?

Fake News and Security

So, is fake news a security concern? Lets have a look at a recent news item that is quite revealing.

Facebook held a news conference to explain what it is doing to remove fake news from its pages and therefore from our feeds. Oliver Darcy from CNN was waiting to ask a pointed question about one of the most prolific sources of conspiracy based fake news, InfoWars.

When asked by Darcy about how the company could claim it was serious about tackling the problem of misinformation online while simultaneously allowing InfoWars to maintain a page with nearly one million followers on its website, John Hegeman said that the company does not “take down false news.”

“I guess just for being false that doesn’t violate the community standards,” Hegeman said, explaining that InfoWars has “not violated something that would result in them being taken down.”

Hegeman added, “I think part of the fundamental thing here is that we created Facebook to be a place where different people can have a voice. And different publishers have very different points of view.”

“We work hard to find the right balance between encouraging free expression and promoting a safe and authentic community, and we believe that down-ranking inauthentic content strikes that balance. In other words, we allow people to post it as a form of expression, but we’re not going to show it at the top of News Feed.”

“That said: while sharing fake news doesn’t violate our Community Standards set of policies, we do have strategies in place to deal with actors who repeatedly share false news. If content from a Page or domain is repeatedly given a ‘false’ rating from our third-party fact-checkers… we remove their monetisation and advertising privileges to cut off financial incentives, and dramatically reduce the distribution of all of their Page-level or domain-level content on Facebook.”

So, based on that conversation you have to wonder if the press conference about fake news was anything other than, well, fake news!

If Facebook don’t intend to take down fake news then they are encouraging it, they claim that they remove or reduce the ability of page owners to generate income on Facebook if they consider fake news peddlers.

How does this affect Security

The issues occur when those who actually believe the fake news start to share it. Often going viral fake news around security concerns on social media, applications and or websites can cause serious damage to the reputation of those targeted.

It’s one thing to allow and encourage free speech, but when it starts to affect legitimate business those at the centre of the problem need to be brought to book. InfoWars has in the past advertised its site and even some its fake news via YouTube advertising. When those adverts are shown in the middle of an item from a highly reputable company it has the effect of subliminally detracting form the reputation of these firms.

Some of the biggest brands in the U.S. had ads running on the YouTube channels for far-right website InfoWars and its founder, notorious conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and they say they had no idea YouTube was allowing their advertising to appear there. – CNN

And on the subject of Fake News, lets look at the person who coined the phrase:

President Trump refused a question from CNN’s Jim Acosta at a joint press conference Friday afternoon with UK Prime Minister Theresa May in Buckinghamshire. Earlier in the press conference, Trump attacked CNN after receiving a question from the NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson. Trump said NBC is “possibly worse than CNN.”

“Mr. President, since you attacked CNN, can I ask you a question?” Acosta asked Trump.

FOX News correspondent John Roberts “Go ahead” he said.

“Can I ask you a question?” Jim Acosta persisted.

“No,” Trump told him.

“CNN is fake news,” Trump said. “I don’t take questions from CNN. CNN is fake news. I don’t take questions from CNN.”

So in this case those accused of delivering fake news are not being given a chance to ask a question! If the press publishes a story that is not true then you have the opportunity to challenge them in a court of law, but POTUS doesn’t bother doing that, he instead delivers his own brand justice.

What is the verdict on security?

Honestly, this is damaging, the press in the United Kingdom have a duty to report honestly and fairly, failing to do so results in court action almost every time. Trump has accused the BBC of purveying fake news in the past, now I know that the BBC has been accused of being biased in the past, in some cases they have been found guilty and had to pay the price, however, they are funded by the UK public via a license fee and as such they are under scrutiny.

Whenever public opinion is manipulated there are risks to security, either cyber or actual. The current climate of calling anything that people don’t like as fake rather than bringing the culprits to book needs to change in the real world and the cyber environment.

As a result the lies continue to be spread and world security and cyber security are where the suffering starts.

Facebook has recently been attempting damage limitation after the Cambridge Analytica scandle. UK advertising has been full of how Facebook is dropping its 3rd party data partnerships, in fact there is probably a second reason for this. GDPR would make 3rd party data partnerships like the Cambridge Analytica one a minefield for Facebook.

The amount of compliance that would be required, the documentation, checking and verification not to mention the fines if something went wrong would be enormous.

Sure, Facebook only received a £500,000 fine for the recent scandal, this is likely to be because the incident happened before GDPR came into force, future breaches would be dealt with through much larger fines.

What can be done?

It seems that unless an affected party takes the offending party to court, the answer may be not a lot. Or is it?

The lesson to be learnt here is that according to Facebook, they won’t take fake news down even after they have found it. The public are therefore in the position of power.

Don’t believe everything you read. You can use websites like https://www.snopes.com/ who provide a lot of resources about scams and news. You can also check the facts at https://fullfact.org/ to check the validity of a story.

If you find that the story is fake, then make sure you point it out politely to the person(s) promoting it.

Why is this so important? Well, there is a very successful ploy that the bad guys often use, simply put they look for popular news trends, create pages that promote that news or hijack existing pages and embed their own malicious code in the page. Before you know it malware has spread across the internet infecting thousands or millions of computers.

In summary, fake news causes real cyber security problems and can be much more dangerous in the real world.

What to Look For in a Good Tech News Website

If you are a huge fan of tech news, then you are probably one of those who are always on the lookout for a better website than the one they already read. And in the quest for the best source of up-to-date information on the latest gadgets and gaming news, you probably have a list of criteria that you use as a checklist. Here is a brief description of some of them. Some of these may match yours while others could be new to you. In the end, they are all useful and work well to help you find the right source that will not only solve your tech queries, but also introduce you to a whole new world of knowledge and facts that you were hitherto unaware of.

* Information About The Biggest Companies

The best source of technology news is a website that carries stories about the big companies in the business that do a lot to influence the market. While there are many startups and entrepreneurs in the business, it is the big guns that hold sway, and it is these that most tech fans would like to follow. Therefore, if the website you are checking follows these companies, you can be sure that they know what they are talking about and recognize the forerunners in the business.

* New Innovations

The other thing about tech news is that along with the big guns, there are many startups and entrepreneurs who also need to be profiled. Maintaining a balance between these two is ideally what a website should do. Learning about new innovations and ideas is the way you can develop some of your own. And it also encourages interesting discussions both between the innovators and the rest of the tech world.

* Discussion Platforms

A good tech news website will also attract a large number of bloggers and surfers who are very knowledgeable on the subject and have interesting things to say at the same time. This creates a platform where open discussions can be held that serve both to critique and contribute to the creating of cutting edge technology. Therefore a website that encourages two way communications is definitely something you want to access and be part of. And it can do this in several ways, some of which include a message board or a blog where both experts and users can post their comments. And with social networking sites now operating to change the way we communicate, there are more ways in which websites find ways to keep their visitors involved and clued in.

* Software And Demos

What every gadget fan always dreams of having is access to the latest software of a demo version of a new release. And if a tech news websites allows them to preview these, then it definitely gets a ton of brownie points. Doing this as a tie up with the concerned company is of course the legitimate way to do it and will also encourage visitors to respect intellectual property and copyright rules.

Thus, these are some of the criteria you can use while looking for a good tech news website. If you keep at least some of these in mind then you can be sure that the site you access is helpful and best suited to your need.

How To Find The Most Relevant News Items Online

Picking out relevant news from the irrelevant junk that appears every day in the newspapers, on your television screen, or on the news portal you subscribe to, could be a tedious job. Especially when it is the first thing you are doing in the morning. Or better still, when you are looking for a piece of news that is pertinent to your industry and field of work, and all you can lay your hands on is spiced up stories, that if nothing else, definitely make sure that the news sells like hot cakes.

Moreover news readers everywhere today are faced with another major challenge. That of advertisements! All kinds of news portals everywhere are flooding with advertisements of every possible company that you have ever come across. From small ads, telling you how fabulous the company is, to quarter page to sometimes even full page ads, newspapers, news channels and almost every news portal today is brimming with advertisements. And while newspapers, news channels or news portals may be the best place for a marketer it certainly is not a pleasant experience for the viewer or the reader. Imagine waking up early in the morning, wanting to update yourself with whatever has happened in the world around you, in the last few hours, while you were tucked away in the comforts of your bed, only to be greeted with an array of advertisements of sorts. That definitely is not the best beginning to any day.

Hence many of you, who are almost addicted to news, simply get disgusted at this whole hoax that presents itself in today’s world in the form of news. Especially if you have been looking for breaking news, or handpicked news, having to sift through not only a lot of irrelevant news but also a great amount of unnecessary and time consuming advertisements may turn out to be an extremely irritating experience. To now save you from this form of torture you have several news portals available on the World Wide Web, that handpick news items for you and not only that, usually these sites are usually free from advertisements of any sort. They choose relevant articles, from relevant industrial sectors and then place them under separate categories. This makes the task of looking for news a far more pleasant and pleasurable experience, because in this case you can exactly click on the category of news you want or be specific about the particular beat of news that you are looking for, and you have all that you need to know about that particular industry right at your disposal.

Barefoot Training in the Martial Arts – No Shoes is Good News!

Most Students of the Martial Arts train barefoot when they are indoors. And, most martial art systems train 80-100% of the time between four walls and on a soft mat. So, for many, training without shoes isn’t much of a challenge.

In the Martial Science, we spend 80-100% of our time training outside. We still support the barefoot training philosophy and motivate students to do the same – even when training in the park.

Why should you go shoeless? Because wearing shoes just does not look cool with your uniform.

Okay, I do believe that shoes serve a purpose and some shoes do not look as ridiculous as a pair of over-cushioned running shoes (Tabi and Five Fingers for example).

I do however, prefer being without shoes. I love to run barefoot, hike, climb and generally just not wear shoes at all. In fact, I spend about 75% or more of my time without any shoes and prefer to stretch this into my sporting activities. I am not the only one.

* Abebe Bikila, Olympic marathoner, won the first of his consecutive gold medals without shoes.

Research barefoot running in Google and you will get a lot more hits on shoeless wonders like Abebe. For example, Michael Warburton published an online paper titled, “Barefoot Running.” Warburton points out that the extra weight of shoes is worse than a few pounds around the waist. Extra weight means more energy is spent. As part of your stride, weight on your feet must adjust to a constant increase and decrease of speed.

Research shows that two 10-ounce shoes will make you more than five percent less efficient. That is good to know – especially when you consider the micro-movements the body has to make to keep from suffering an ankle injury.

Internal, External and Spatial Awareness

Next let’s talk about proprioception and don’t worry if you haven’t heard that word before – neither has Microsoft.

Proprioception (pronounced PRO-pree-o-SEP-shÉ(TM)n), from Latin proprius, meaning “one’s own” and perception) is the sense of the relative position of neighboring parts of the body.

Let us associate the senses with Mind, Body and Spirit and break them into three categories (only for the sake of learning this concept):

01 External (sight, taste, smell, touch, hearing and balance) – Body

02 Internal (senses that help us to perceive pain) – Mind

03 Spatial (sense that shares feedback in relation to our world) – Spirit

Proprioception is a sense that helps us to verify where the limbs of our body are located in relation to each other and space around us. It also helps determine if we are moving at the correct speed or using the correct amount of force.

In the Martial Science – we consider Spirit to represent life-spirit and interaction with the living world around us; people, nature and animals.

We get feedback from the world around us in order to adjust and improve our lives. Well, your body needs to do the same thing in order to function properly.

If you did not have proprioception and I put a blind fold over your eyes, you would just fall over. The police test proprioception to see if someone has had too much to drink. This is because you lose this sense when you have had too much alcohol. That is why they ask you to walk on a straight line without looking at your feet. Without proprioception, we must look at our feet in order to walk.

If you watch a baby move his hands around trying to grab for something, you will notice that his hand movements stutter as they begin to learn how to develop hand and eye coordination. Every time that they reach for something new, they are creating new data and feedback to build on.

The skill to spin a sword or catch a Frisbee both require that you have a very specific SENSE of the exact positions of your limbs, your muscles and joints involved. The development of this skill has to reach level 4 of the natural learning process:

1 You are unaware of your incompetence (you don’t know you don’t know)

2 You are consciously incompetent (you know you don’t know)

3 You are consciously competent (you must think as you act)

4 You are unconsciously competent (you can act without thinking)

Let us assume that you are a martial artist that would like to have natural cat like reactions. Not only that, but you want good timing, and to be able to kick with deadly accuracy.

At first, you are going to be unaware of the fact that you cannot kick properly or with precision (1). Then you see someone kick the way you would like to and begin to understand that you do not currently have the skills you desire (2). With some training, you can kick a bag or target on command (3). Finally, with years of practice, you can kick without thinking. You react naturally (4).

This sense must reach autopilot so that you can then focus on other important areas of performance, such as contemplating alternative strategies, observing your environment or punching while kicking.

A more modern way to label proprioception is to call it movement intelligence. This is of course with the belief that proprioception is focused on feedback. When the body moves, information is sent to the brain for further investigation, calculation and adjustments.

There’s more to it than meets the eye and foot coordination.

Studies researching ankle injuries suggest that our reflexes play a bigger role in staying injury free. When you wear bigger shoes, you are not going to have as much development around the core areas of your foot and ankle. Shoes alone could be the cause of many ankle sprains, knee injuries and back pain.

Here is a quiz. Pain caused by ankle sprains has to do with:

A Strength

B Endurance

C Flexibility

D Balance

The correct answer is D – balance / proprioception.

Having a strong ankle, physical endurance or flexibility will not save you from an ankle sprain if you have not also developed the neuromuscular system to react naturally. Shoes just do not help us with this development as much going barefoot does. Imagine wearing a shoe on your hands.

Going barefoot helps to improve proprioception because you can feel more of your feet, develop more muscle memory and thus increase chances of reacting naturally. The more you can FEEL the better, as this will create more signals and thus more data. In the end, that = more balance.

It all happens so fast and on such a micro level that it is not something we can consciously adjust to in the now.

Since most martial artists already train barefoot, I am suggesting that you also do the same when you are in the park training, or lounging around the house. If you want improved kicks, you need to start from the ground up. The more often you kick and train barefoot – the better.

NOTE: You must train with shoes too if you expect to know how to move in a real life situation (we do not go barefoot in the mall). Balance is key – but before you put on the iron man suit – consider training what is inside it first.

How to Write Good and News Worthy Press Releases

Writing a press release is actually a professional activity. The steps involved in writing a news article are somewhat very easy to follow but they do not really guarantee that in the end a good release will be produced. The importance to produce news worthy article cannot be emphasized more than it has now. The following are some of the characteristics of a good release.

A good press article should be straight forward and relevant to the story – get straight to the point as directly as possible without beating around the bush.

Good news worthy writing also must be objective from the first word to the last – objectivity in the sense that whatever news is carried in that writing is verifiable.

Releases should be easy to understand – easy and normal language should be used, idioms and metaphors unless from quotes should be avoided as much as possible

A good PR should deliver its message strongly – the focus of the article from the start to the end should be to get the message out as strong as possible.

Steps to take in writing a good press release

Start strongly – it is very important to make sure that you start with your message. The reader’s attention should be grabbed by whatever message that news release is giving. You can do this by putting the message on the headline. For example if you are reporting a drop in oil prices in New York, you should put the term oil prices drop in NYC in your headline.

Be precise – you should get your news out clearly without any contradiction. Any contradicting reports are best left out until they can be independently verified or confirmed.

Use ordinary and easy to understand language – the reason why you are writing the press release is because you want news to reach certain people. That should motivate you to make sure that the language is as easy to understand as possible.

Stay focused to the facts of the situation – the purpose of a news article is to report. In this regard you should cover every fact that is relevant to your news. Making personal sentiments in your release may dent its credibility considerably.

Write with the right format – News release formats are important because they will allow the intended reader to know that this is news the instant they see the news article.

Make your writing news worthy – making the news article news worthy simply means that your coverage should be based on current events and not historical.

Choosing A News Reader

There are hundreds of newsreaders available today. Whether or not you need this tool for business or personal purposes, you should choose something that works perfectly for you. Here are some factors to consider in choosing a news reader:

1. Cost: There are various news readers in online and desktop formats that are free. Paid versions are mostly used for business purposes. If you want a more advanced tool for organizing and reading content, then perhaps you should go for a paid news reader.

2. Features: Do you need a tool which lets you share the content you have curated on your social networking pages? You need a newsreader tied up with a social management tool for that. If you need something that simply organizes the content and generates a custom RSS feed, you need an advanced tool for that. A custom RSS generator also lets you collaborate and repurpose your articles for future use.

3. Usability: You should choose a feed reader that is easy to use. You should be able to navigate through its tabs and menu functions easily and the user interface should be clean and organized.

4. Privacy and security: Choose a news reading tool that is secure and something that will not share your personal information to others.

5. Versatility: It is important that your RSS tool should be as versatile as possible. Choose something that lets you share the content you curated easily across different platform. Also choose a tool that is able to search content according to keywords, hashtags, podcasts and other forms of online media. It should include photos, audio and video on its search results.

Types of news readers:

  • Online: Even though Google Reader, the most popular newsreader was discontinued in 2013, there is still a good number of options on the web if you want to organize your RSS feeds.
  • Desktop: The advantage of using a desktop-type RSS generator is that it loads faster, the data you collect is instantly accessible and it is more customized.
  • Custom: Some features of paid aggregators have the option to be customized according to your needs. You can choose a news reader that is able to generate a custom RSS that can be distributed in your mobile app, website or social media page.

In conclusion, you should be able to choose a news reader that suits your personal and professional needs. You can choose between free and paid options, as long as it does its job for you.

The Benefits of Alternative News Sites

Reading the paper online and watching 24-hour news sites is becoming more and more popular. This is because it is cheaper and you get more news. You can see what is happening in the world, as it happens. You don’t have to wait until the next newspaper is released, like in the old days.

Do you remember when the war on Afghanistan began and we were able to watch the first invasion live on the news? That is how up to date things have gotten and we have never been more in touch with the goings on in the world, than we are today.

However, it is become better for people to get the best news on alternative news sites. This is because they are not biased. They are not affiliated with any political party and they can choose their own news and which articles they post. There is no agenda to their articles.

Therefore, it is important to know some of the advantages of reading the news on alternative news sites.

1. As mentioned above, they have the power over what articles they publish. The only purpose they serve is to break the news. They are not feeding us news that has political connotations and they are not biased towards anything. The news you read on their sites is purely for news purposes.

2. They pick their topics. They may have articles on their site that other news stations and websites might deem unworthy of the news. Furthermore, they don’t just focus on the bad news. You will be able to read happy things in the news and some of their articles are really educational.

3. They aren’t trying to sell you things. Sometimes, when a newspaper is talking about a product or a special offer, they are trying to sell you something. However, with most online news sources, they are trying to educate you. When doing the research for this article, there was a link on an alternative news site on how to get phones for cheap. It was clicked and it was just assumed that there would be a gimmick or it would be asking for money. But, the link actually took you to an article, which showed you how to get cheap phones, but then also warned you on the dangers of auction websites and getting scammed. The article didn’t link to any auction website. It was purely educational.

4. Another good thing about alternative news sites is that they don’t get bogged down with rehashing things over and over again. If you turn on a news channel or look on one of the well-known news sites, like Sky News, the only thing that they will be talking about is how cold it is in America, There are other things going on in the world right now. There are other things going on in America as well. We all know that the weather is bad and people are suffering but that doesn’t mean that we should ignore everything else.

5. Alternative news sites try to comment on everything. They have sections on celebrity news, discovery news and they even have sections on funny videos and advances in technology and business. We don’t have to hear or read the same things over and over again. We know that murders happen and the economy is bad and they are things that we should know about, but what about everything else? CES 2014 is happening right now and there has been hardly any news coverage at all. These are things that are going to affect us in the future and we hardly know anything about them.
