Engaging the Learner in the Learning Process

One of the key components to successful teaching is engaging the learner. No matter what the subject or what the student body is, learning happens through engagement. Effective teachers understand how to keep students engaged in a variety of ways throughout their lessons.

Engaging students is not to say that teachers take on the responsibility of learning for the students; each party has its own responsibilities.

Caleb Gattegno, an expert on the teaching/learning paradigm, was fond of saying, “it’s the students’ job to learn the language; it’s the teacher’s job to learn the students.”

Thus, while the learners must do their own learning, the facilitator of that process is the teacher. Effective teachers understand how to facilitate learning through engaging the whole of the learner.

Apart from the fact that paying attention is a prerequisite to learning, there are many other benefits to engaging our students:

  • Engaging students promotes a positive environment.
  • Engaging students lowers the affective filter.
  • Engaging students fosters interaction and community.
  • Engaging students supports learning (and student) retention.
  • Engaging students empowers learners to learn.
  • Engaging students produces more effective, efficient teaching.

Designing and delivering an engaging lesson need not be an exhaustive, challenging process, that brings to mind the show-and-tell days of kindergarten (fun as they were). While there are grandiose manners to insure engagement such as creating a game or writing a skit, there are also smaller, easier measures a teacher can take.

Here are six easy tips to keep in mind when you consider how to keep your students engaged:

Energize everyone: If we are physically present, our minds are more apt to be awake as well. There are many ways to energize the class through the use of using manipulatives, music, and movement. When we involve the whole of the learner we energize the body, mind, and spirit.

Necessitate participation: As teachers, we should never do for the students what they can do for themselves. This includes everything from students passing out materials to students asking and answering the questions. The more we allow students to do their own work, the more they stay engaged.

Get them in groups: Learning is a communal act that fits nicely into any classroom context. When we inject pair work and small group activities, students connect with the content and with one another in a deeper manner. Having students work cooperatively supports their learning and creates community.

Assess at every step: The more we get from them, the more attention they pay. Random, verbal and non-verbal assessments recycle key points and encourage participation. Trying to find out what students know helps them build confidence and helps us keep them in the center of the class.

Generate connections: Students need to sense a connection between the content of their world and the world of academia. Personalizing content, building background, and explaining the task’s purpose are all ways we generate those connections. Connecting students to what they are doing and why encourages engagement.

Expect more: When we believe students do know more than they’re letting on, we encourage students to reach beyond their comfort zone. That belief however it is expressed is palpable, and students respond to it. When we expect they can, students tend to surprise us, themselves, and their peers.

Engagement is paramount to learning the content, learning one another, and learning oneself. For students to develop unconscious competence, they must first act consciously. The more conscious we teachers are in who our students are and how to engage them in their own learning, the more we set our students up for success©.

So, if you are looking for ways to make your teaching more efficient and more effective, remember ENGAGE. There’s no magic to engaging students, but the effects of engaged students can be magical.

There are countless ways to keep our students engaged. Find out more about how to engage students at TESOL Trainers.

How Do Popular Smart Speakers Respond to Voice Search in Different Languages

Over the past several years, smart speakers have become increasingly popular in the U.S. These wireless speakers are one of the most recent advancements in AI (artificial intelligence) technology. They respond to voice commands and are capable of a myriad of functions, from conducting Internet searches to playing a song or playlist, to checking the weather report, to creating a to-do list, to controlling a variety of home devices, and much more, depending on which model of smart speaker you own and how “smart” your home is set up to be. Recent research has shown that over 39 million people inside the U.S. now own one of these devices.

Considering the current popularity of these devices, it’s hard to believe that it was as recent as 2016 when the first such product was introduced: Amazon’s Echo speaker with Alexa voice control. Since that time, Google has released their own smart speaker version, along with Apple, Microsoft, and many others. Although the sales of these units will no doubt fluctuate over time, as of this writing, some of the more popular devices are Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and Microsoft’s Cortana.

While there’s no doubt that the capabilities of smart speakers are impressive, none are multilingual – at least not yet. The fact is that right now, no matter which smart speaker you purchase, it will only be able to speak one language at a time. Users can determine which language their device will use by choosing the language setting on the unit. Amazon’s Alexa, at the time of this writing, is capable of understanding only three languages: English, German and Japanese. Microsoft’s Cortana understands six different languages: English (American and British), German, Italian, Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese. Apple’s Siri offers more extensive language capabilities that include the following: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai and Turkish. It also supports a variety of dialects for Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

But thanks to Google, the language capabilities of smart speakers are about to change. Google Assistant currently understands eight languages: English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. However, by the end of 2018, Google Assistant will support over 30 languages and will become multilingual. This means that instead of the user needing to change language settings for their smart speakers, and only being able to speak one language at a time, Google Assistant will be able to switch from one language to another seamlessly – just as their multilingual users would do. That means that if a user speaks more than one language at home — or speaks one language at home and another at work, for example — the smart speaker will be able to understand and communicate in both. Google plans to provide this multilingual capability initially (by later in 2018) for English, French and German, adding more languages over time after that. By the end of the year, this smart speaker will be capable of communicating in over 30 different languages.

It’s easy to see why smart speakers have become so popular over the past couple of years. In our technological age, the ability to access needed information by simply asking a device is convenient and appealing, not to mention all the other capabilities provided by smart speakers. So it’s no wonder that the next logical step would be to produce multilingual versions of these popular devices. After all, we live in a world that is increasingly multi-ethnic and multilingual, and our artificial intelligence should reflect those qualities as well.

Telecom Billing System – Detailed Know How

Telecom billing systems are a breakthrough in the technological world. In this rapidly rising industry, an efficient system is required to map the consumer usage of its services. The system should be very effective in turning the mapped data into a bill that can be presented to the customer.

Firstly, the services used by the customers need to be segregated. Then a detailed bill needs to be generated, giving a clear picture of customer usage. The billing department and the customer support have to work in unity to keep the customers happy. Let us find out how a telecom billing system works. It starts with customer application for a new account with the telecom company. The customer records are checked by the telecom company and then a unique customer ID is provided to the new customer. The customer account is then activated.

The unique customer ID will save all the usage records of the particular customer. The system will use the chosen tariff plan by the customer and update the bill as per the Call Detail Records (CDR). Long distance call charges and roaming charges will be added to the system once the outside supporting telecom operators send in the details.

Wireless internet usage data will be charged separately depending on the data usage tariff plan. Details like call duration, caller number, call start time and call end time will be recorded In the Call Detail Records of the customer. In a similar way, outgoing calls are also saved. These details are reflected in the bills as well. Whenever a customer calls a customer support number, the call details are recorded. These details can lead to manual changes in the billing system, such as errors reported, discounts offered or description of the complaint for future reference. The complaint history of a customer and call history can help the telecom company in case it is needed in the future for solving issues.

Every month a computer generated invoice is sent to the customer in the form of a bill. Customers whose records show no payment processed for the earlier month/s are sent a warning message or their service will be temporarily deactivated.

A bill will be generated finally. It will be based on the Automated Message Accounting System, Interim Standard 124, Network Data Management and many such billing standards. The entire system costs are calculated depending on the money invested in the call center, the hardware and the software, the collections, the billing cycles, etc. Sometimes printed bill costs are also involved when the customer request bills through postal mail instead of e-bills. Printing costs are also involved for sending out communication mails to customers.

Driving License Tests – Choosing the Best Online Training Provider

With the large number of online training resources offering a driver license training from the comfort of your home, choosing the right training provider becomes very obscure and a rather difficult task. For the inexperienced learner many driver license tests available online might look equal. However with a closer look you will see that some tests are “more equal than others”.

The check list below will navigate you through the maze of options to get you the right online training.

1. Are Offered Online Tests the “Text-Only” Ones? People are very visual creatures. Adequate graphics helps us to learn better and quicker. Online tests without accompanying graphical illustration of each question look pretty outdated and won’t help in quality online training.

2. Is Online Driving Test a Static or Dynamic? Many driver license permit tests found in the Internet are the “hardwired” static samples of 2-3 standard test sets. This type of online tests is not meant for serious training and is simply a start point to give you the main idea of what kind of questions could be asked in DMV test. Modern advanced online drivers permit training systems are all dynamic. For such training systems each specific test is a custom-generated dynamic set of questions which gets its feed from a large pool of test questions and answers in the database. In well designed online training system the questions and answers are usually randomly hashed to create a unique and unparalleled learning experience.

3. How Many Different Test Sets Can You Get in Your Online Training? Check how many unique, non-repeating tests could be offered by online system. The larger the number of unique tests – the higher your chance to learn the material better and to pass your DMV test from the very first attempt. For online training systems this usually translates into the size of a pool of questions-and-answers included into the provider’s online database. Make sure that this training pool has at least 150 – 200 questions.

4. Can You Request Tests with Incrementally Growing Complexity? The Questions in the tests you take are of different complexity. To insure the better learning curve for you it is important to take specific tests in form of training packages of incrementally growing complexity. Best advanced online driver training systems should offer you a carefully designed line of training packages of incrementally growing complexity to accelerate your learning. Start simple and go higher and deeper with your training while your knowledge grows.

5. Is the Test Progress Indicator Shown During Your Test Session? It is a good practice (and some would even say – a standard) to show how many questions you have already answered and how many still has to be answered to complete the test. All advanced training systems have this indicator. Some advanced online drivers license training channels will even include the time left and time elapsed since you started the test.

6. Can You Choose the Language of Driver License Tests? We are a nation of immigrants. If you are not a native English speaker getting training in your first language could be crucial for your success. In addition to that, taking your DMV test in English is not mandatory in the U.S. – many states have a list of approved alternative languages and officially allow you to take a written DMV test in the language other than English. Make sure that your online drivers training provider supports multiple languages.

7. Are Offered Online Driving Tests Customizable to Your State of Residence? Driving tests in the U.S. significantly vary from state to state in test size, structure and complexity. For example, in Washington State the driver license permit tests are made of 25 questions in total (21 traffic law and 4 road signs questions) and you would need to score at least 20 correct answers to pass the test. In Indiana State each DMV test includes 50 questions in total – 34 traffic law and 16 road sign questions – and is actually a two tests in one. You have to correctly answer at least 28 traffic law and at least 14 road sign questions to pass your DMV test. Another difference in DMV tests offered by different states is the number of choices they use for each multi-choice question. Some States use 3 answer choices for each question in their tests while others can use 4 or even 5. The more multi-choice answer options displayed for each question – the more difficult it is to pass the test. It is understandable now that the same driver license student who easily passes the DMV test in one state can well fail in another state. By adjusting the driver license training tests to your State of residence you will get the knowledge tests of corresponding size and structure which eventually will help you to get better prepared and pass your DMV test from the very first attempt.

8. Does Your Training Channel Provide You a Test Performance Report? Knowing what questions and in what question category you have answered incorrectly helps to expose the weak points in your knowledge and hence – define the next steps in your training effort. This usually gets addressed by real-time performance reports generated every time you finish your online driver training test.

9. Can You Re-Take Exactly the Same Test Again if Needed? If you didn’t do well in your last training session you might want to re-take the very same test again to better understand questions which you didn’t answer well. So it is important to be able to re-take the very same test again. Some advanced online driver permit training systems even allow you to get back and re-take only the failed part of your test skipping the questions which you answered well. Focusing only on questions where you are not doing well yet will save your valuable time and provide a solid and smooth learning experience.

Conclusion

Choosing an online driver license training provider is a non trivial task which directly affects how quickly you will learn and hence – how soon you will start driving. Don’t ignore this important step – make sure to invest some time in your online training provider selection. This will certainly pay you off down-the-road by saving you a lot of time in training as well as save you money by eliminating unneeded DMV exam fees for re-taking the failed test.

Outsourcing and Business

A subset of outsourcing, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) involves contracting the operations and responsibilities through a third party service provider. From the last couple of years, the BPO industry has evolved as the most substantial sector in the Indian market. India has emerged as the most favored location for all BPO services across the globe. This has accelerated the Indian economy to the heights, progressively boosting the statistics depicting the growth in the years to come. It has been however forecast that by 2020, more than 80% of the world of business process outsourcing services will be served by the Indian companies. Marked as the best place to attain superior quality services globally, the BPO industry is strengthening its foundation in India.

With the changing needs of the country, call centers across the country are mushrooming as a quality service provider in outsourcing solutions. Acknowledged for its skilled manpower and state-of-the-art technological support, Indian BPO call centers are generating maximum profit for its clients. In fact, the customer care service of the industry has been setting benchmark ever it became synonymous with the industry.

With language always seen as a major obstruction in the overall growth, many BPO firms have made a strong attempt towards offering BPO services in multiple languages. This has motivated the clients to enable marketers to approach the masses effortlessly. Several factors have contributed to the success of call centers in India. What are they? Let’s take a quick look then.

Progressive infrastructure

Considered as the fastest growing nations in the world, India has turned out to be a popular and favorable hub for major MNCs around the world to set up their BPO segments. These organizations not only outsource service requirements to the local companies but also hire manpower to handle its business operations as well extending help to their partners residing anywhere in India or abroad.

Lower per capita income

Although a developing nation, India has skilled and well-educated manpower in abundance that can be employed at subsidized wages. Since the labor cost is considerably high in the developed nations, majority of organizations from the developed countries find India as a perfect destination to fulfill their outsourcing needs, thereby, leading to the establishment of massive BPO call centers. Their prime focus has always been the youth where hiring is concerned as they want to reap maximum benefits in the shortest possible time.

Quick adaptability to alien culture and style

Indians are quite flexible in nature and can easily adapt themselves to the working style and new culture. Therefore, the foreign consumers find immense familiarity in India that makes them comfortable to carry outsourcing needs at ease, therefore, making India a hotspot for service seekers across the globe.

Mammoth youth power

India has always been the land of education. So, it may not be surprising to know that around 60 percent of educated Indians are actually youth. Equipped with professional graduate degrees and comparatively good English speaking ability, most of them are employed in multinational companies and other business outsourcing vendors situated in India. This has proved to be a major reason, which is offering an exceptional hike to the BPO services.

Off-shoring activities like customer services uses up the available manpower in India, providing an extensive range of call center services like customer care, live phone support, IVR, email response in a bilingual or multi-lingual mode.

With the presence of a call center steadily becoming a necessity, catering to the global demand has become a pre-requisite. Indian firms are opening up BPO call centers not only in the metropolitan cities but also in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The gradual realization of the importance of a BPO is actually dawning in the minds of the corporate giants, which is further motivating India to expand its ability to meet their demands each time.

Forex Charts – Using The ADX Indicator For Bigger Profits

If you’re using charts, then you want to trade the strong trends – and the Average Directional Movement Index Indicator, or ADX, enables you to do this.

Wells Wilder developed the ADX, and outlined it in his classic book “New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems”.

Let’s look at this essential indicator in more detail – and see how to apply it on your forex charts, to give you greater accuracy when generating your trading signals.

Determining the Strength of the Trend

The ADX is a momentum indicator, which aims to measure the strength of the trend – and attempts to determine if the market is trending, or is trading sideways.

The Advantages of the ADX

A core belief of technical analysis is that a strong trend in motion is more likely to continue, than reverse. Therefore, you always want to be trading strong trends – as your odds of success are higher. The Average Directional Movement is a good indictor – and you should consider using it as part of your currency trading system.

The Technical Bit

For the boffin’s out there, here’s the technical bit – don’t worry if you don’t understand the calculation, its easy to use when visually plotted. The ADX is based on the comparison of two other directional indicators, both of which were also developed by Wilder, and they are:

Positive Directional Indicator (+DI) and the Negative Directional Indicator (-DI) to produce ADX as showed in the following formula:

ADX = SUM[(+DI-(-DI))/(+DI+(-DI)), N]/N

Where:

N: Refers to the period of calculation. The formula above produces the ADX line, which oscillates between 0 to 100 values. The +DI and -DI are both present and can be seen to make up the indicator.

You don’t need to understand the above calculation to use the indicator – you only need to accept that the indicator works.

The indicator is easy to use when it’s visually plotted – and you’ll find it included, with most of the good forex chart services.

How to Trade using the ADX Indicator

The ADX it’s not a bullish, bearish trading signal generator – and should never be used as such.

The ADX indicator simply indicates the strength of the trend – and other indicators should be used to enter, and exit trades.

Although the ADX fluctuates from 0 to 100, it rarely moves above 60.

Use the ADX in the following way:

Readings above 40 indicate the strength of the trend.

Readings below 20 indicate range trading and flat periods of consolidation.

You can use the crossing of +DI and -DI to determine the trend direction; when +DI crosses -DI upward, it’s a bullish signal, on the other hand, when +DI crosses -DI downward it’s a bearish signal.

The ADX line is a great momentum indicator and like the RSI (also developed by Wells Wilder), the ADX it will help you trade the strongest trends – and give you advance warning of changes in momentum.

The Bottom Line

If you want currency trading success, you can’t just trade support and resistance levels, and hope they hold or break. You need confirmation of momentum to get the odds on your side – and the ADX indicator will assist you.

Final Words

New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems was published in 1978, and was one of the first trading books I ever bought. Every trader should make this book a part of his or her forex education. If you want to learn forex trading the right way, get the book, and use the ADX indicator to increase your chances of making big FX Profits.
