Crime and Punishment – Britain’s Parliamentarians to Escape Justice

The furore in Britain’s parliament over the expenses debacle has added fuel to the fire now raging as the country faces its worst economic crisis of modern times, with the Exchequer laid bare for a decade or so to come.

Michael Martin, who was perceived to be the overseer for a legion of so-called fraudsters has been forced to resign as the House of Commons’ speaker in a row over MPs expenses and is the first speaker to be forced out since 1695.

Anger is brimming over at the moment as MPs have been caught with their hands in the till and, from now on, will be banned from “flipping” their designated second homes in order to milk the Commons allowances system.

David Cameron, the Conservative leader, has stopped the Additional Cost Allowance being used for furniture, household items and food – the sort of “extras” that has so incensed the public since details were published by the Daily Telegraph.

It is being suggested that the expenses claims are technically not illegal, although among all sorts of dubious expenses parliamentarians have claimed include swimming pools, chandeliers, horse manure and moat cleaning. But is it?

In a statement the Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police said: “Due to the increase in subsequent allegations received by the Metropolitan Police, the Commissioner and Director of Public Prosecutions have jointly decided to convene a panel to assess allegations in order to decide whether criminal investigations should be started. A panel, comprising officers and a senior CPS lawyer, will commence a series of meetings next week.” Read, whitewash. No minister will ever see the inside of a courtroom as far as this scandal is concerned.

Although PM Gordon Brown has outlined plans to dismantle what he described as the “gentlemen’s club” of parliament by handing power for the oversight of every aspect of MPs’ pay, expenses and pensions to a new statutory independent regulator, he is said to be “angered and appalled” by the scandal when he was right up there “flipping” with the best of them. He even put his apartment in his wife’s name so that he could claim on his Fife home, whilst living in a grace and favour home in Downing Street. He also paid his brother £6,577 for “cleaning services”.

This one does indeed go right to the top as Chancellor Alistair Darling is one of six MPs who is said to be facing a police probe over their expenses. Another leading minister who could be the subject of a Scotland Yard investigation is Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, who is alleged to have built up a property portfolio worth £1.7 million with the help of the expenses system while living free in a ministerial flat. Minister for London Tony McNulty claimed £60,000 for a house that his parents live in.

Then there’s Jack Straw, Secretary of State for Justice no less, who is accused of claiming the full cost of council tax back even though he received a 50% discount from his local authority. He has since repaid the difference. Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, paid for improvements to his Hartlepool home in the months after announcing he was quitting as an MP. One of the worst offenders, Hazel Blears, the Communities Secretary, claimed for three different properties in a single year, spending almost £5,000 of taxpayers’ money on furniture in three months.

One staggering claim by Tory MP Bill Wiggin was £11,000 for a phantom mortgage he never had. Then there’s the ludicrous claim of a Tory MP who has been forced to quit after using taxpayers’ money to protect the ducks in his garden pond. Or of Ruth Kelly who claimed thousands of pounds in expenses to pay for damage caused to her home by flooding, although at the time she had a building insurance policy. No wonder Labour is now on par with the almost unheard of United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) in a recent poll.

A couple of lower-level MPs have been forced to quit but the public wants far more than mere suspension. Gordon Brown is facing a cabinet revolt after Hazel Blears and other senior figures took a defiant stand against moves to shift or demote them in his next reshuffle. One comment on the Guardian’s website says: “I want Blears sacked and slung in jail for fraud.” But there are rules for the taxpayers that paid for this willful extravagance and others for parliamentarians, it seems.

Let’s just take the case of Hazel Blears. Miss Blears repaid more than £13,000 in Capital Gains Tax after it emerged that she had designated one property as her second home for the purpose of expenses but told a different story to the taxman to dodge the bill when she moved house. On this subject Gordon Brown said: “Hazel didn’t break any rule or law [she did if her tax return was incorrectly filed; it’s called tax evasion]. But what she did was unacceptable [illegal, if she evaded Capital Gains Tax]. She came to me, we talked about it and she paid back the money [when under current disclosure rules, the fine for non-disclosure is £5,000, plus the penalty for tax evasion if found guilt by HM Revenue & Customs].”

In addition, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, is also under fire for failing to say whether he paid Capital Gains Tax when he sold his second home, while building a £1.7million property empire with taxpayers’ help. He could also come into range for filing a falsified tax return if this turns out to be the case.

Let’s imagine a scenarion in which The Great Train Robbers said they were sorry and that it wouldn’t happen again; it was just an honest mistake to steal the £2.6 million but we have now given it back. Oh, well that’s all right then, you can go free. Or the case of three illegal immigrants who masterminded Britain’s single biggest visa scam and who boasted about how easy it was to cheat the Home Office, then admitted it was just another “honest mistake” and here’s the money back. Or, if an ordinary man, who Labour laughingly is said to represent, were to embezzle expenses of such magnitude from his company, he would be jailed. But the fact that the company is the government and members of the government committed the offence, there is no one to press charges. Or is there?

The Daily Mail has backed a move to bring to justice MPs whose flagrant abuse of expenses and are joining forces with the Tax-Payers’ Alliance to launch a campaign for the “private prosecutions of backbenchers and ministers who have pocketed thousands of pounds through dishonest claims”. Despite overwhelming evidence of a culture of crooked expenses claims among MPs, they say that “legal experts think it highly unlikely that police and the Crown Prosecution Service will bring criminal charges against any of them”.

Finally, this brings me to the novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, who in Crime and Punishment focused on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Raskolnikov, an impoverished St. Petersburg ex-student who formulates and executes a plan to kill a hated, unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money, thereby solving his financial problems. In this parallel, perhaps Dostoevsky’s message was one of future, political nihilism in a country far away?

If murder can be committed by governments with impunity, such as in the case of the Iraq war, where use of fictitious information was given to the general public in order to justify the killing of perceived enemies of the state, then why not the individual? This, I think, is one of the many messages Dostoevsky wished to make.

Neither George Bush nor Tony Blair will ever be indicted for the Iraq war. In the same way, an individual who commits murder, for similar reasons to that of Dostoevsky’s Raskolnikov, who argued that he was ridding the world of an evil, worthless parasite, will be jailed for life. But by some tangled paradigm of human nature, those “honourable members” of the British parliament who deliberately falsified their expenses claims will be pardoned not just by themselves, the police and the judiciary, but by the people themselves.

Considering Homeschooling – Reasons to Avoid Government Homeschooling Like the Plague

Are you tempted to join government homeschooling (a charter school or public school independent study program) or do you know someone who is?

These days, Christian parents who are thinking about homeschooling are often unaware that you can homeschool in most states without public school control. And those who do know are often tempted to join government homeschooling for the supposed goodies. The bait of free materials or the perception of getting help from “real teachers” seems inviting, but having public school employees overseeing your homeschool dramatically alters the spiritual dynamic of the home.

You need to know that there is another form of homeschooling; one that is scriptural. Private biblical homeschooling strengthens God’s design for the family and helps ensure the future right of our children and grandchildren to freely homeschool in a Christ-centered manner.

Homeschooling has always existed in this country — from the native Americans to the first Europeans to form colonies in the New World. Yet it was mostly forgotten as state funded schooling, the purpose of which is to create obedient productive citizens, pervaded the land in the 19th century. But in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, a resurgence in homeschooling began among parents who were mostly Christians. These “pioneer” families often resisted the idea that the state was supposed to control the education of their children. They blazed a path few dared to follow – with parents at the head of their children’s learning.

More than that, they discovered that biblical homeschooling changed everyone in the family, bringing them through God’s refining fire and helping strengthen their relationship with Jesus, and with each other.

Those who hated God were incensed at the idea that bible-believing parents were taking back the headship of their homes. Not only that, but the behemoth of public education was taking a financial hit whenever a child was withdrawn from public school or never entered in the first place. Strategies to stop homeschooling failed, and homeschooling was proven to be legal in all fifty states. As the fruit of raising children in the love of the Lord became evident, more and more families started doing it.

But Satan is clever and whenever Christians have fruit, he delivers a strong counter-punch. He was not going to sit back and watch generations of children being brought up in the Lord Jesus. We believe his counter-punch to homeschooling was to lure Christian parents back into the public school fold via government homeschooling. When a family goes that route, not only is the public school still financially supported, but that family is put under the control of an institution that denies the lordship of Jesus Christ. Spiritual revival of the Christian family is not likely to come out of this humanist matrix.

While we do not question the walk of those believers who enroll in government homeschooling — any more than we question the walk of the Christians who have their children enrolled in regular public school — we urge them to consider the spiritual fruit of their decision. We urge bible-believing Christians to refrain from becoming yoked with government homeschool programs for many reasons, and to instead discover the blessings of a non-government biblical home education:

Usurping Headship

In government homeschooling, you place those who hate God over your homeschool. God is the head of the husband who is the head of the wife. The divine lines of authority established by God are disrupted when you insert the public school system into this holy order. The public school and public school mentor you are assigned in government homeschooling install themselves in the headship position — that is where the buck stops. They become the provider, director and accountability of that homeschool instead of the husband and God.

There is no free lunch — when you take public school money for homeschooling, you are agreeing to allow the state be the head of your children’s education. Education is not a neutral endeavor, but a highly spiritual matter, and one that is not separable from discipleship. God sets up “governments” in the Bible — individual, family, church and civil government — and gives responsibilities to each. Imagine the government being in charge of serving you communion or giving baptisms. Ridiculous, you would say! Those are spiritual matters God clearly gave to the church. Well, no where in scripture does God give the civil government authority over the raising of children. When God speaks of training up children — for example Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” He is speaking to parents, not bureaucrats.

In private homeschooling done biblically, the buck stops with the dad (or mom if there is no dad in that family). If the dad decides he doesn’t want his kids taking a certain standardized test, does he have the ultimate authority? If he picks out the textbooks and decides they are to all be Biblical, is he able to do this? If he decides he wants a child of his to skip a certain subject this year to concentrate on another, does he have the power to make that call? Only in private biblical homeschooling does the father have this authority.

Government homeschooling puts the mother under the counsel of humanists. Even if she happens to be assigned a public school mentor who is a Christian, the curriculum, methods, and goals of public education are designed to produce a carnal man of the world. Psalm 1 says, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked.”

A family on the educational dole undergoes a spiritual change in authority as government homeschooling has no use for the husband. Homeschooling becomes “her thing” — something Mom and the public school mentor implement. He is under them. Just like in the welfare system, a dad who realizes that he is not the provider and protector soon zones out. It may seem like a subtlety to women, but this undermining of a man’s role is a powerful “dis”. When Dad checks out, Mom is left with all the work in the homeschool. If you want your husband to be actively involved in the homeschooling, don’t emasculate him by choosing government homeschooling.

In contrast, biblical homeschooling is about fathers being restored to their rightful role as heads of the homes.

Supporting a Corrupt System

We implore believers in Jesus to totally leave the public school system, which is responsible for devastating the minds and hearts of millions, which has brought untold numbers of minors to abortion clinics during school hours, which is currently the main tool of homosexual indoctrination in this country. Statistics from several ministries show that the majority of Christian kids who are sent to brick-and-mortar public schools will renounce their faith in Christ and quit going to church after high school graduation. The public school has long proven itself a producer of the most rotten fruit we see in society today — so why would a Believer want to prop up a system that is so obviously of the kingdom of darkness?

When you enroll in government homeschooling, your child is legally considered a public school student. Even though you are doing all the work, thousands of tax dollars are diverted into the public school system on behalf of your child. A bit is kicked back to parents for secular materials. Christians are inadvertently ensuring the survival of a blatantly anti-God system.

In contrast, a family that chooses private Christian homeschooling can tell their neighbors they are a blessing to taxpayers — and they do not have to feel guilty about contributing to the delinquency of America.

We need to stop viewing public school as neutral, and assuming we will have no consequences from aligning ourselves with a demonic system. As Jesus says in Matthew 7:18: “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”

Promoting Humanist Curriculum

When you take public money for homeschooling, you are not supposed to use Christian curriculum or teach from a Christian worldview during school hours. This is true even if you bought the religious materials yourself! Federal and state laws prohibit the use of sectarian curriculum during school hours. You are agreeing to run a non-religious public school in your home during set hours when you take their freebies.

There are many who tell us “we’ll just do what we want in our home” but once you put yourself under the government, you are a sitting duck for increasing control. For example, in 2004 a charter school in North Monterey County, California lost its license to operate. One of the reasons cited was that parents were using religious texts during school hours. Parents were told that, “any religious instruction during class time for which the school received state money is against the law regardless of the source of funds used to purchase materials.” (The Monterey County Herald, March 27, 2004)

In Canada, the same thing happened — parents thought that since they were at home, they could do what they wanted and teach during the day from the religious books they purchased themselves. That was true until someone decided to enforce the law. Read the story here.

Many Christian parents just settle for using the secular texts. But nothing is neutral — secular texts actually present a worldview that says truth has nothing to do with Jesus Christ, or the books are blatantly pro-evolution or full of other prevarications.

Christians joining government homeschooling are promoting another unintended result. Since government homeschooling vouchers are only supposed to go for non-sectarian materials, the homeschool marketplace is experiencing pressure for more secular texts, even from Christian households that otherwise would purchase decidedly Christian materials. Many of the openly Christian materials produced during the recent upsurge in Christian homeschooling are being bypassed by parents in favor of non-Christian materials — which can be approved for inclusion in the portfolios that government homeschoolers must turn in to get the continued approval of the state.

Everything you present to your children influences them. When you continually introduce conflicting worldviews in the main subject matter, this gets into the heart of mind of your child. This ad says it all when it comes to why Christians should not let their children be discipled by non-Christian curriculum. This Bob Jones University advertisement very clearly illustrates this point.

At the founding of this country, books were scarce. Often families only had the Bible to teach their children to read from. And a look at the writings of children in those days shows they were more educated than modern children who have bountiful fancy equipment and curriculum.

Yoking with the Unsaved

With government homeschooling, you become unequally yoked with the unsaved. Not just in the task of educating your children by being guided by a humanist system, but in the other associations you and your children make. There are meetings and activities sponsored by the government homeschooling programs. These expose your family to ungodly peers — both for Mom, and for the children.

2 Corinthians 6: 14-17 says, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?” Therefore, “come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.”

Some Christians are under the mistaken belief that since they are homeschooling and since unbelievers are homeschooling, that they are doing the same thing. But shouldn’t what we are doing be radically different from what the unsaved homeschooler next door is doing? Is this about homeschooling or is homeschooling a means to an end (in our case, raising up a child in the Lord Jesus?) Educating children cannot be severed from discipleship. Everything we teach should be in light of the lordship of Jesus Christ. Studying mathematics, for example, should be done for the purpose of being a blessing to others through our ability to say, build good bridges. And in the wonder of mathematical rules, children should see the glory of God. But unbelievers are homeschooling for very different reasons — to create what the public school is creating — a worldly child.

When you look into the eyes of your children, what do you see? An eternal being who is fearfully and wonderfully made. What does the unsaved mom sitting next to you in the government homeschooling group see in a child’s eyes? A product of evolution who lives only for this world?

When you are meeting with a public school teacher or have unsaved homeschooling friends, it makes you less likely to follow your Christian convictions. For example, you might eschew biblical discipline, knowing those in your government homeschooling program disapprove.

Some Christian families think they need government oversight for “accountability”. Since most of us are grown up public school children, we cannot fathom a situation where the government does not have its hands all over our lives. But we need to think about this biblically — no where in the Word does it say the civil government is to be responsible for keeping believers “accountable” in raising their children. Rather, the wife is to be accountable to the husband, who is to be accountable to God.

As government homeschooling becomes prominent in an area, the Christian groups often disappear. The biggest threat to the survival of the private biblical homeschooling movement, by far, is government homeschooling. Why? Christians in government homeschooling have other activities they must attend, and when they do attend private biblical homeschooling groups, there often is tension. In a homeschool support group, Mom tends to talk about her head, her goals, the activities they do and the curriculum they use. The spiritual disparity between the freedom of private biblical homeschoolers versus the bondage of the government homeschoolers becomes evident and can easily explode a good support group.

Also, Christians who join government homeschooling usually stop supporting the Christian homeschooling movement and Christian homeschooling conventions. If a public school employee picks out and pays for your curriculum, and they have their own social activities — why associate with other Christians at conventions and support groups?

Focusing on Worldly Standards

If you enroll in government homeschooling, you are agreeing to follow the agenda of a system that does not recognize Jesus as Lord. In private biblical homeschooling, you follow God’s standards. The first set of standards strives to raise up a child loyal to the state, who views all of life from an evolutionary worldview. The other seeks to raise up a child loyal to Jesus, who views all of life from a biblical worldview.

Some Christian parents claim they will act like the are following the government standards, but try to outwit them by secretly teaching God’s standards and getting the government goodies at the same time. But standards are conveyed in many ways — by the curriculum, by the teaching methods, by the teacher, and by the head of the homeschool.

Jesus made it clear that we cannot follow two masters. What kind of confusion does it foist upon a child to see the conflict of pretending to follow one system, but really attempting to follow another? Why not be openly Christian in all you do in your homeschooling? Why not just reject the world system?

Why does a Christian need government homeschooling, anyway? The pioneering generations of homeschoolers who came before you did it on a shoestring and without government oversight. Many were poor, had lots of children to homeschool, and had to make their own curriculum as most textbook companies would not sell to them back then. Private biblical homeschooling has a record of outstanding academic and spiritual results — we urge families not to “go back to Egypt.”

Burning Out and Giving Up

When you first hear about government homeschooling, it might seem like it would make homeschooling easier — someone guides you and pays for stuff. But the pressure of humanists regulating your homeschool changes what you do during the day. And possibly running afoul of the government in your homeschooling can create great anxiety. Shadowed by required paperwork, diverted into doing lessons that she would never do if not for a secular institution looking over her shoulder… Mom starts to feel like an employee of the public school.

In government homeschooling, when Mom is feeling stressed about accomplishing her goals, it is Big Brother, not Dad or God, whom she is afraid of disappointing. When she has those inevitable days of feeling overwhelmed, whom does she go to for support? When she says she cannot do it, when she goes to her head for help, does she get prayed for and directed to Jesus? Or, does the public school mentor suggest the next logical step for a government homeschooler — the brick and mortar public school? Government homeschoolers are a very short step away from the physical public school, and many wind up there within a short time.

There exits a vast network of Christian homeschooling support groups in many areas of this country. If you cannot find a Christian homeschool support group near you — start one, or find one on-line. Or find a church that has private Christian homeschoolers. Pray that God will provide at least one other family to come alongside you.

Handing over Parental Rights

Currently, there is no greater threat to the biblical homeschooling movement than Christians enrolling in government homeschooling programs. The hard-fought parental rights won by the “pioneers” of the homeschool movement are at risk from Christians who are being lured into public school homeschooling programs. Satan hates independent Christian homeschoolers precisely because they are raising up a godly generation of young people who are serving Jesus with their whole hearts and minds. Since he who controls the curriculum controls the hearts and minds of the children, there is a deliberate push to get all homeschoolers under the control of the public school system.

Government homeschooling weakens our parental rights by drastically reducing the number of homeschoolers willing to put up a fight politically. When parents are on the educational dole, they become concerned with getting more plunder, not defending freedoms. Those who voluntarily put themselves under bondage do not understand the threat of greater government intrusion. Government homeschoolers often say things like, “Why shouldn’t all homeschoolers be required to take all the standardized tests? I’m required to. Why shouldn’t all homeschoolers be evaluated by a public school teacher? I am.”

Once there is a “critical mass” of government homeschoolers, there will be no one left to hold back the onerous regulations that all homeschoolers will be subject to.

The politicians know that government homeschoolers pose no threat to their humanist agenda. Once you accept government money, you give up your rights — dependents have no motivation to fight the system that feeds them. You have agreed to homeschooling on their terms. Anti-homeschooling liberals have made it plain they will want all homeschoolers under their authority. God never gave that authority to the civil government, only to parents. We do not have a right to delegate away the responsibility God has bestowed on parents alone.

Getting a Vision to Restore the Christian Family

We see biblical homeschooling as a Christian family restoration movement. The Christian family, and thus the nation, is in disarray, largely due to parents allowing the government to raise their children. A spiritual revival of the Christian family can only come through God and His divine order for the family, not through an anti-God system.

Earlier generations made such great sacrifices — they were hauled into court, almost had their children taken away — they fought for your right to be free of the public school bureaucrats. You need to look beyond the bait of government money and your fear of being an independent homeschooler. Look at the spiritual state of your family and consider the long-term consequences for future generations of Christian homeschoolers.

Commit yourself and the success of your homeschool to the Lord Jesus Christ. Allow your husband his rightful role as head of the home and homeschool. Instead of becoming a dependent on government educational handouts, become an advocate of protecting our God-given rights to give our children a biblical education, free from government control.

Families who have never experienced homeschooling in the Lord without answering to the government need to know that God will provide — whether it is materials, hope, courage, or wisdom. Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, “but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

The good news is that we have found that most Christian parents who homeschool will NOT go into public school homeschooling IF they are educated on the biblical reasons not to before they get into it. Once parents are under the control of the public school system — whether it be in a brick and mortar school or a government homeschooling program — they are often fearful to leave even when they see the problems with it.

Mobsters – Chuck Connors – The Mayor of Chinatown

Chuck Connors was a scam artist of the highest caliber and the most famous white man in Chinatown history. Because of his gregarious nature, Connors was called the “Mayor of Chinatown,” even though Chinatown had its own elected Chinese Mayor, Tom Lee, the leader of the On Leong Tong.

George Washington “Chuck” O’Connor claimed he was born on Mott Street in Chinatown, but it is more likely he was born in 1852, in Providence, Rhode island.

Telling the truth was never Connors’ strong point.

When Connors was still a teenager, he changed his last name from O’Connor to Connors. Rumor had it that “Connors” had less of an Irish ring to it than “O’Connor,” and the Irish were strongly associated with the police, whom Connors had no fondness for.

Connors’ early nickname in Chinatown, for some unknown reason, was “Insect,” but soon he was called “Chuck” by everyone, because he loved to cook chuck steaks, by hoisting them on a stick, and searing them over small fires he had set in the streets of the Bowery and Chinatown. At various times in his wacky life, Connors was also called the “Sage of Doyers Street,” and the “Bowery Philosopher.”

As a young boy, Connors enjoyed tormenting the Chinese men by pulling on their pigtails, then making his getaway by sprinting through the streets, usually with an angry Chinaman chasing him with a big knife. As a teenager, Connors learned to speak Chinese, which eventually endeared him to the Chinatown population.

As he grew older, Connors became a professional pugilist, then a bouncer at Scotchy Lavelle’s joint at 6 Doyers Sreet. Connors also frequently hung out at Tom Lee’s dive at 9 Bowery, affectionately called “The Dump,” which was said to have “the dirtiest species of white humanity to be found.” (Strangely enough, even though there were dozens of bars in the Chinatown area, some even owned by Chinese men like Tom Lee, hardly any Chinese people frequented these places, preferring opium dens as their mode of relaxation and inebriation.)

During this time, Connors palled around with a Chinatown street thug named Big Mike Adams. Whereby Connors was playfully mischievous concerning his actions with the short and slim Chinese male population, Adams was downright deadly. Working as an enforcer for the local tongs, Adams bragged he killed a slew of Chinese men, by decapitating them with his huge knife. Once in full view of dozens of witnesses, Adams forced three Chinamen onto their knees in broad daylight, then he decapitated them one by one, as the crowd screamed in dismay. Adams’ big piece of work was when, working for a rival tong, he decapitated Hip Sing Tong leader Ling Tchen.

After it became clear Adams was out of control, Connors kept his distance. As Adams became more belligerent against the Chinese, Connors developed a closer relationship with them. Adams lost much face when he was attacked on Pell Street by a drunken Hip Sing gangster named Sassy Sam. Adams, supposedly a tough guy, ran through the Chinatown streets screaming like a little girl, as Sassy Sam chased Adams, while swinging a Chinese ceremonial sword. This sign of weakness was Adams’ undoing.

A few weeks later, Adams was found gassed to death in his Chinatown apartment. With the windows and doors in Adams’ room closed off, someone had inserted a small rubber tube into the room’s keyhole. The rubber tube was attached to an open gas jet in the hallway. That someone was believed to have been Chuck Connors, who did the job as a favor to his Chinese friends.

After Adams’ death, Connors decided that maybe the street of Chinatown were not too safe for him any more. Adams had friends in Chinatown, and Connors heard rumors that they were gunning for him. His incessant drinking was also a hindrance to Connors’ health, so Connors moved uptown to start a new life.

No drinking. No doping. No more heavy-handed work.

Soon, Connors met a woman he liked named Nellie and he married her. To support himself and his wife, Connors took a job as a conductor on the Third Avenue El. During this period of married bliss, Nellie taught Connors how to read and write.

But alas, the education of Chuck Connors came to an abrupt end, when Nellie died suddenly. Connors went back deep into the bottle. One day Connors got so drunk, he was shanghaied onto a ship, which set sail for London, England.

In London, Connors escaped his captors and hid in the inner city of Whitechapel. Connors made friends with the local costermongers, who were people who sold fish and produce from street stands and carts. Connors absorbed and copied the local culture, and when he returned to his old New York haunts, he was dressed smartly in the costermonger attire of bell-bottom trousers, blue stripped shirt, yellow silk scarf and a blue pea coat, resplendent with big pearl buttons, which even traveled down the seams of his trousers. Connors’ transformation included a little song he had learned on the other side of the pond:

Pearlies on my front shirt,

Pearlies on my coat,

Little bit of dicer, stuck up on my nut,

If you don’t think I’m de real thing,

Why, tut, tut, tut.

The “little bit of dicer” Connors wore on his head was a derby, two sizes too small, instead of the costermonger traditional cap, which was frowned upon by the Bowery residents.

It was around this time that Connors became a bit of an eccentric (if he wasn’t one already). With no visible means of support, Connors became best pals with Police Gazette publisher Richard K. Fox. Fox owned a row of buildings on Doyers Street, and he let Connors live at 6 Doyers Street rent free, as long as Fox could regale his readers with the real and imagined exploits of “The Great Chuck Connors.” Fox even co-wrote Connors autobiography called “Bowery Life,” in which he called Connors the “Mayor of Chinatown,” which solidified Connor’s reputation for life.

According to Luc Sante’s wonderful book about the underbelly of New York City entitled “Low Life,” Fox’s writings about Connors “was included in a series that otherwise ran mostly to boxing, wrestling, club-swinging, and poker manuals, was illustrated with photographs of Chuck in typical costume striking posses (cigar in corner of mouth; one hand pointing forward with index, or back with thumb; the other hand in coat pocket with thumb sticking out; legs set apart, one forward, one back; pail of beer at the ready).”

The text of Fox’s writings is dotted with many of Connors’ unique colloquialisms, such as:

Here’s to me new graft. I’m one of dose guys now wot gits

ink all over his flippers and looks wise. Say, it’s a cinch,

and I’ve got some of dem blokes wot writes books skinned

a mile.

Or, Connors’ musing on what he would do if he became a millionaire:

Me headquarters would be de Waldorf, but I would hev a

telephone station in Chinatown, so I could get a hot chop

suey w’en I wanted it quick. Ev’ry mornin’ at 10 o’clock – or

near dere – I’d call up me Chat’am Square agent an’ tell

him ter give cologne ter der gals an’ segars an’ free lunch ter

der gorillas. Ev’ry bloke dat wuz hungry would have a feed

bag an w’enever he wanted it. How does dat grab yer?

With no visible means of legal support, Connors had to find himself a quick way to make a buck. And he did so by becoming, what was called in those days, a “lobbyglow,” Chinese slang for “tour guide.” Connors worked the Bowery area, where there was some competition for his services. However, Chinatown, because of Connor’s closeness to the Chinese leaders, was Connor’s exclusive territory. No other lobbyglow would dare enter Chinatown with his customers.

Connors specialized in what was called “the vice tour,” where Connors would take his customers to seedy venues to witness the depravity of the Bowery and Chinatown. While other lobbyglows took any curiosity seeker who would pay the freight, Connors, because of his fame as the Mayor of Chinatown, specialized in bringing celebrities from all walks of life on his tours. Some of Connors’ customers included Sir Thomas Lipton, novelists Israel Zangwell and Hall Caine, actors Henry Irving, Ellen Terry and Anna Held, and Swedish and Danish royal families. Of course, because of Connors’ cache in the Chinatown and Bowery areas, he was able to charge higher prices than his competition, especially to the swells just noted, who could certainly afford it.

During Connors’ “vice tour,” he would regale his customers with stories of hatchet murders and white slavery. But the highlight of Connor’s tour was when he showed his customers the inside of a real-life opium den. These dens, of which Connor’s had several, were, in fact, total fakes. Connors employed several Chinese accomplices to stage his fabrications.

Two of his cohorts were George Yee and his wife Blond Lulu. As soon as Connors gave them the secret knock, signaling his impending entrance with his crew, George and Lula would fake a drug-induced stupor, while smoking something purported to be opium, complete with exotic aromas. Then, as the tourist watched in amazement, Connors assistant would proceed with a solemn monologue, spoken through a megaphone, saying, “These poor people are slaves to the opium habit. And whether you came here or not to see them, they would have spent the night smoking opium as you see them doing it now!”

Then on cue, Yee would stop smoking and rise shakily to his feet. Yee would then start dancing slowly, gyrating his body in a suggestive way, while singing a little ditty entitled “Alle Samee Jimmy Doyle.” Connors would tell his enthralled customers that this was unimpeachable evidence that Yee had become crazed, due to the effects of his non-stop opium smoking. Then without another word, Connors would lead his crew out of the apartment to a Chinese restaurant, which would complete that particular tour. Meanwhile, George and Blond Lulu would tidy up a bit and get ready for the next go-around, which took place in just a few hours.

Another duo of opium smoking fakes whom Connors employed was a prostitute named “Chinatown Gertie” and her partner (pimp?) Charlie Lee. Gertie’s brothel was located at 12 Pell Street, right above “Black Mike’s” Pelham Saloon. When Gertie’s was informed her apartment would be on Connors’ tour that day, she immediately canceled any appointments with “customers,” and turned her brothel into an phony opium-smoking den. The only problem was that instead of smoking opium, which would have been safer, they smoked molasses, which caused Charlie Lee’s premature demise.

When Connors was at the height of his fame, he started the Chuck Connors Association, which was for the benefit (you guessed it) of Chuck Connors himself. The sole purse of the Chuck Connors Association was to throw a yearly gala that was attended by all the local politicians, millionaires, members of most of the city’s illustrious clubs, including the Princeton Club and New York Athletic Club, and by anybody in New York City who was somebody.

In December 1903, Connor’s held his yearly gala in Tammany Hall on East 14th Street. The joint was jumping with such celebrities as pugilists John L. Sullivan, James J. Corbett and Jim Jeffries (who was accompanied by actress Anna Held), French actress Maxine Elliot, as well as millionaire industrialist George F. Train. The music was provided by two bands: Professor Wolf’s Orchestra, and to throw a bone to Connors’ Chinatown connections, Professor Yee Wah Lung’s Chinese Orchestra.

At the time, Connors’ main squeeze a charming gal named “Pickles,” who was known as the “Belle of Chinatown.” Connors being busy with the festivities, Pickles, a tall and buxom broad, arrived at the party at 11pm, accompanied by Ling Quong, the owner of a Chinatown opium den, who barely topped out at five feet. Both were a little drunk on something, liquid or otherwise.

Immediately, Pickles caused a stir at the ball, when she asked a passing older lady, who had her nose up in the air and was in the company of several gentlemen, “Hey sis, have you got any cigarettes?”

The lady stiffened and tried to walk past Pickles, but Pickles would have none of that. She grabbed the lady by the arm and pulled her back. “Go on and give me a pipe. Don’t mind dem guys you wid. Give me the pipe!”

The lady finally spoke to Pickles, saying, “My poor girl, I don’t smoke cigarettes.”

Pickles considered giving the lady the back of her hand, but then she reconsidered and said, “Back to der woods for yours!” The lady and her male crew then scurried away.

Looking around, Pickles realized she was greatly under-dressed for the upcoming march, in which she was supposed to be accompanying Connors. So she conned a young girl, with some loose change no doubt, to lend her the skirt the girl was wearing. While Pickles was in the dressing room changing and sprucing up a bit, Connors began asking around as to Pickles’ whereabouts. A young girl in a pink dress told Connors, “My sister Mamie is lending her a blue skirt. Mamie will stay in the dressing room until the march is over.”

Minutes later, Pickles made her grand entrance, resplendent in the borrowed skirt which was about six inches too short. She sauntered over to Connors who was waiting, not too patiently, flipped her cigarette to the floor, then said to Connors, “Come on Chuck, yer needn’t be ashamed of me. I’d best de looking rag in the hall.”

Connors apparently agreed, so he took Pickles by the arm and marched her around the hall, followed by 300, or so well-lit celebrants.

The joint was really jumping, when Carrie Nation made her unexpected and unwelcome appearance. Nation was a highly viable and quite loquacious member of the Ladies Temperance Movement, which opposed alcohol in pre-Prohibition America, as well as the notion of women smoking cigarettes. Nation was quite an imposing figure, standing over six-feel tall and weighing in the neighborhood of 175 pounds. If she were a boxer, male or female, Carrie Nation would certainly be a heavyweight.

At first, Nation was stopped at the door by the bouncers, but Connors, obviously slightly in the bag, went to the door and said, “Sure she can come in. Der are udder automobiles upstairs with loose wheels. Jist step in and help yourself to a twist.”

Big Mistake.

Nation immediately stampeded past Connors and hustled to the bar area, where she saw several girls smoking cigarettes. She smacked the cigarettes from the girls hands, and did the same thing to their male counterparts.

“I came here to stop this ball,” Nation bellowed to the crowd. “I received a letter from a heart-broken mother about it, and she said her son lost his job by attending it last year. I’m going to break it up!”

Her face beet read, Nation approached a table where ladies were sitting with alcoholic drinks in front of them. Nation brushed the drinks off the table and told the frightened ladies, “You ought to be arrested for drinking!”

Then Nation hurried to the main stage, climbed the steps, and proceeded to read a letter she had received, begging her to stop the Chuck Connors Association Ball.

Connors ordered one of the bands to drown her out by playing a popular song named “Bedilia.” The crowd started singing, “Bedelia, I’d like ter steal yer.”

Nation stood on the main stage, dumbfounded, as another segment of the crowed chanted, “Put her out! Rats! Rats! Shut her up! Hey! Hey! Hey!”

By this time, Connors knew he had to do something, so he went to the main stage, and induced Nation to leave the stage. Connors walked Nation toward the back door, and told her, “I’d like to introduce you to a little girl who ought to be home in bed.”

Outside waiting under the steps leading to the back exit, was none other than Pickles, who screamed up at Nation, “If yer don’t git down the stairs in a minute, I’ll push your nose through the back of yer neck!”

Pickles hurried up the steps and grabbed Nation by the throat. Connor grabbed both women in a bear hug, and with the help of three bouncers, Carrie Nation was evicted from the premises. After Nation was safely outside, Connors snapped at her, “The street is all yours!”

On May 10, 1913, Chuck Connors returned to his room at 6 Doyers Street, not feeling very chipper. He told Mrs. Chin, who had cared for him the past few years, “I’m not good for several more days.”

Mrs Chin immediately summoned Connors’ pals from the Chatham Club. When they arrived at Connors’ room, Connors told them, “If I am going to cash it, let it be here in Chinatown.”

Cooler heads prevailed, and Dr. Shields from the Hudson Street Hospital was immediately summoned. When he arrived at Connors bedside, Dr. Shields discovered that Connors had a severe cash of pneumonia. Connors was rushed to the nearby “House of Relief,” but he died just a few hours later at the age of sixty one

Connors funeral procession was one of the finest in Chinatown history. It started in front of Connors’ room at 6 Doyers Street, and consisted of sixty three coaches filled with Connors’ mourning friends, and an additional six coaches stuffed with floral arrangements. The mourners were a veritable who’s who of the political world, the sporting world, and even the underworld. The only relatives in attendance was Connors’ brother Philip O’Connor and his sister Mrs. Elizabeth (O’Connor) Miller.

The procession snaked around the streets of Chinatown, then stopped at Transfiguration Church, at 29 Mott Street, for Connors’ funeral mass, which was said by Father McCann. After the mass, the procession again winded around the streets of Chinatown, and the Bowery. As Connors’ coffins past each establishment, Chinese merchants set off their tradition funeral firework displays, in honor of a white man they considered one of their own.

The funeral procession continued over the newly-built Manhattan Bridge, and ended in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, where Connors was finally interred.

How to Build Muscle 101 – Your Complete, No-Nonsense Guide

The worse thing you can do when you start trying to build muscle is to imitate what you see in muscle building and body building magazines. Don’t try to do the stuff the pro bodybuilders do. You’re just starting out and they are on lots of steroids (which means they can make gains on just about any program, even unhealthy ones).

If you’re an average guy or gal you need to follow a basic, no-nonsense approach to get started building muscle fast. And you also need a guide to follow to make sure you don’t overdo it in the beginning (which ultimately harms your progress).

With this in mind, keep reading to discover…

How to build muscle – ten tips to help you build muscle fast!

Here we go, the only “no-nonsense” guide you’ll ever need:

1. Focus On Strength First – More strength will always equal more muscle. Plus, it’s embarrassing to be really big and have no strength. Also, strength is the basis for every physical skill. If you’re an athlete and you want more endurance, more speed, more agility, etc all these physical qualities will improve when you improve your strength.

* Body Weight Training – I recommend starting with bodyweight (BW) training first because you should master your own bodyweight before you try lifting more weights in the form of iron. Practice the basics: Pushups, Pullups, Dips, Squats, Pistols, Crunches, V-Situps, etc. Move on to harder versions of each move when those get easy. Also BW training is great for strengthening your tendons.

* Weight Training – Weight training is great for building strength. And you don’t need a lot of expensive equipment. An Olympic weightlifting bar set is all you need to start. You want to always make sure to lift with proper technique though. Make sure you start with an empty bar and work your way up from there.

* Kettlebell Training – Is a great strength builder as well. You build strength at odd angles and you can do olympic lifting style moves like the snatch, clean and jerk, etc with much less training than with a barbell. You can get relatively good at these exercises fast. And if something goes wrong there is less weight to drop on yourself or the floor.

2. Always Use Free Weights – Avoid weight “machines” like the plague. The exercises which will make you strongest are performed with a barbell. Compound exercises like the squat, deadlift, bench press, and overhead press will do more for your strength levels and physique than anything else.

Here’s some other reasons to only lift with free weights (barbells specifically):

* It’s Safer – you’re not performing unnatural, assisted movements like with machines. Barbells and free weights build strength in the movements you need them in. You increase the strength of all your stabilizer muscles simultaneously too.

* More Efficient – Because you’re using more muscles (more stabilizers) to lift, press and pull barbells and other free weights – you build more muscle with less effort.

* More Functional-When you lift heavy objects off the floor… over your head and explosively you’re doing the same types of activities that you do in real life. Which means the strength you build in the gym will transfer over to every area of your life.

* All-in-One – You can do every exercise you can imagine to get stronger, build muscle, burn fat and get in great shape with just a barbell and weights. You don’t need a ton of weight training equipment to take up a lot of space (ideal for a home gym).

* Kettlebells are like a whole gym – in just a couple little iron balls. You need even less space for kettlebells which makes them ideal for the home gym or traveling.

3. Always Do Compound Exercises – you want to build strength and muscle throughout your whole body, so train it as one unit. The only exception to this is when you discover you have a muscle imbalance and then you need to do isolation exercises to strengthen the weak muscles and stretch the “too tight” muscles (otherwise injuries will occur). For example:

* For arms: Do not do tricep kick backs and lots of curls – do pullups, pushups, presses and snatches

* For legs: Do not do leg extensions and hamstring curls – do squats, kettlebell pistols and deadlifts

* For your chest: Do not do flys and pec deck – do bench press, overhead presses and dips, etc

4. Work Your Legs. Hard. – Squats and Deadlifts are full body exercises. Because of this they help put muscle on your whole body. (You can actually put muscle on your chest and arms by working your legs) Also, you don’t want to have “chicken legs” with a huge upper body. Give yourself something stable to stand on-strong legs.

You’ll look good once you can squat 1.5 times your bodyweight (it won’t take long!) and you can deadlift the same (or more likely 2 times).

5. Full Body Workouts are the rule – You need to do full body workouts. You don’t need to do isolation exercises. Why not get the best bang for your buck? Why not get maximum results in the gym for the least amount of time. Here’s 7 reasons why full body workouts are better for muscle building and fat loss.

If you play any sports you’ll be more athletic and perform better if you do full body workouts. Kettlebells are great full body tools as many of the exercises you do with them like snatches, clean and presses, etc work the entire body.

6. Recover as Hard as You Work Out – The more you overtrain the slower your progress will be. Also, the bigger your muscles, the more rest you need. You can actually gain 30lbs of muscle by only working out a TOTAL of 4 hours – the key is recovery. You muscles always grow OUT of the gym, not IN it. Here’s what to focus on:

* Rest. You don’t grow in the gym – get your three intense workouts in a week and get out. Rest when you’re outside the gym. Meditation and Relaxing are good because they reduce stress and cortisol levels which help you build muscle and burn fat. Think quality, not quantity when it comes to how much time you spend in the gym.

* Good Sleep. Your body repairs itself when you sleep. Growth Hormone and Testosterone levels are increased during deep sleep. Get 8 hours of good sleep if possible. Deep sleep is more important than quantity though. If you can get a quick 20 minute nap in after working out that is great.

* Eat Enough. Your body needs food to fuel it and for recovery. Eat clean (more on that in a moment).

* Drink Water. I try for a gallon a day. Drink at least 2 cups at each meal. You need pure water to stay hydrated and it’s great for a million other reasons too.

7. Eat Clean. You want muscle weight, not fat weight right? Eat clean. Anything that is in a box is BAD. Just accept it. Schedule in one “cheat day” per week so you don’t go crazy trying to eat clean. Pig out on the foods you’re trying to quit that are bad for you on that day, that way you will be sick of them and not want to eat them the rest of the week. It’s hard to hit perfection, so aim to eat good 80% of the time. You need (in order of importance):

* Protein: Lean beef, chicken, eggs, whey protein and milk …

* Vegetables. broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, etc …

* Fats. Fish oil, Olive Oil, real butter, Nuts, etc …

* Fruits. Bananas, apples, oranges, avocados, etc …

* Carbs. Whole grain and brown, no starches except post workout

8. Supplement – Some people don’t think you need supplements, I say our food supplies suck for nutrition. What should you take…

* Whey Protein – helps you get protein (more on that in a moment)…

* Fish oil – is the best supplement for absolutely everything health wise

* Superfood/Green drink – to get the vegetable/green goodness you need

* Multi-vitamin – to get all your vitamins AND minerals

* Enzyme formula – for faster recovery and boosting overall health

* Creatine – for building muscle fast and a ton of other health benefits.

9. Focus on Protein. It’s said you need 1gram per pound of bodyweight to build muscle. I’ve never been able to do that consistently, and I still build muscle and burn fat, but I always focus on protein (it’s not a meal in my mind without protein). Also, protein has a higher thermic effect than other macronutrients so it’s good for fat loss too. Here’s good sources of protein:

* Red Meat. Ground round, steaks, deer, buffalo, …

* Poultry. Chicken breast, whole chicken, turkey, duck, …

* Fish. Tuna, salmon, flounder, etc …

* Whole Eggs. (yes even the yolk.) Or do 80/20, 80 percent white, 20 percent yolk

* Dairy. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and whey protein…

10. Never Give Up – Don’t get frustrated if you’re not getting results right away. Stay positive, a positive mental attitude is a must. Focus on the basics, get stronger, make progress in small steps and before you know it you’ll have come a long way. Subscribe to this site and visit often for more tips to help you.

Karen Steen Shatters World Steeplechase Record at the 2009 National Masters Meet

Karen Steen traveled from Olympia (WA) to the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh intent on setting a world record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, and did exactly that in one of the most exciting races at the 2009 USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Six world records and 21 American records were set at the meet.

Steen, an outstanding runner at Pacific Lutheran University and now one of the premier runners in the Pacific Northwest, bolted to the front at Titan Stadium when the gun sounded to start her 45-49 age-group event. It was clear from the outset that if Steen set a world record under the scorching Wisconsin heat, she would run alone at the front.

She was among the more than 1,000 athletes ages 30 to 95+ who competed in this 4-day meet to determine the best of the best among the nation’s runners, jumpers and throwers.

The onlookers at Steen’s record effort, including myself, were immediately aware of her presence as the track announcer was quick to point out that-after the first 400 meters of this grueling 5-lap test over 3 hurdles and a water barrier each lap-Steen was on world-record pace.

Watching her progress for 3 more laps the fans were screaming words of encouragement as she passed by, and then a rousing crescendo greeted her in the final stretch as she realized the record was hers for the taking, and roared home in 7:07.49 to break the old record by more than 9 seconds (7:16.90 by Julie Leonard of Switzerland in 2004).

Almost lost in the moment of Karen Steen’s triumphant performance was the fact that both the runner-up in the race-Andi Camp (30-34 at 7:17.28) and 3rd place finisher Lisa Valle (40-44 at 7:17.36)-were within 1 second of breaking the world record.

Steen, who averaged approximately 5:42 per mile, is no stranger to world records. In 2005, she set the world mark for 2,000-meter steeplechase in the 40-44 group by running 7:05.06.

Steen, who runs for Club Northwest, would return 2 days later to win the 1,500 in an American-record time of 4:48.08. Her individual performance was arguably the best among pure times of any track athlete at the Nationals, with a 98.85% age-grade rating.

A close second to Karen Steen’s effort came from Sabra Harvey of Houston, running in the 60-64 group. Harvey matched Steen’s world record with one of her own, winning the 800 in 2:34.66, and then returned to capture the 1,500 in an American-record 5:22.50.

Harvey is a graphic designer who started jogging 9 years ago and only began competing in masters competition last year, proving once again that you never know what you can do until you try.

Other world records were set by Audrey Lary (75-79) in the 400 (1:27.41), Florence “Flo” Meiler (75-79) in the 80-meter hurdles (18.63), Frank Levine (95-99) in the 5,000 (50:10.56), and Leland McPhie (95-99) in the Long Jump (1.93 meters/6-04).

American records were also set by Flo Meiler in the 200 hurdles (46.68) and pentathlon (4,783 points); Becky Sisley (70-74) in the 80 hurdles (17:32), 200 hurdles (43.87) and javelin (26.09m/85-07); Leland McPhie in the 3 kilogram shot put (6.87m/22-06.5) and triple jump (4.00m/13-01.5); Max Springer (95-99) in the 100 (29.31) and 400 (2:45.36); and Audrey Lary (75-79) in the triple jump (7.43m/24-04.25) and weight throw (10.40m/34-01.5).

More American records in the field events were set by Bruce McBarnette (45-49) in the high jump (1.93m/6-04); Robert Ward (75-79) in the discus (41.18m/135-01); Harriett Bloemker (75-79) in the javelin (22.54m/73-11.5); and 4 others in the weight throw-Jennifer Stephens (35-39) at 10.49m/34-05, Myrle Mensey (60-64) at 15.73m/51-07.75, Lillian Snaden (80-84) at 6.92m/22-08, and Ronald Summers (55-59) at 18.18m/57-07.75.

Two American 5,000-meter race walk-records were set by Shirley Dockstader (75-79) at 34:34.60 and John Starr (80-84) at 33:57.72.

Kathryn (Kathy) Martin (55-59), who dominated last year’s meet while winning gold medals in the 800, 1,500, 5,000, 10,000 and 2,000-meter steeplechase, again won the 4 events she entered this year-the 1,500 (5:22.93), 5,000 (19:46.47), 10,000 (40:04.03) and the 2,000 steeplechase (8:26.86) She finished 5th overall in the steeple and 1st in her age group. Last year Martin set the American record in the steeple with an 8:23.20 clocking.

Among the non-record performances that caught my eye were Lonnie Hooker (45-49) in the 100 (10.93) and 200 (22.46); Bill Collins (55-59) in the 100 (11.56) and 400 (54.87); Steve Robbins (65-69) in the 100 (12.66); Antwon Dussett (30-34) in the 400 (47.17); Steve Gallegos (50-54) in the 800 (2:10.70) and 1,500 (4:22.47); Christine Olen (40-44) in the 1,500 (4:45.98); Jan Frisby (M65-69) in the 1,500 (5:09.25) and 5,000 (19:20.54); and Tom Bernhard (55-59) in the 5,000 (17:06.84).

Others were Richard Cochran (70-74) in the discus (47.79m), Cochran won the bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics; and Ed Burke (65-69) in the hammer (50.62), Burke was a 3-time Olympian and flag bearer for the United States team at the Opening Ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Falconry in Mississippi

Most Mississippi sportsmen who go small game hunting for birds and rabbit use a modern shotgun and the appropriate sized shot and it has been this way for nearly three centuries. More than 357,000 Mississippi hunters aged 16 years of age and older take to the woods each year, a force larger that the peacetime army of Germany, Great Britain and France combined. However, of those hunters, only about 25 use a bird of prey instead of a firearm or primitive weapon to harvest game.

What is Falconry?

Falconry is taking wild game in its natural habitat with the use of a trained falcon. In past times, the term austringer or hawker was used for a hunter who did the same thing with a hawk or eagle, however today the term falconer and falconry is used for practitioner and the sport as whole. The hobby originated in the ancient world as far back as 2000 BC and predates the use of firearms for hunting by more than a millennium.

Do you have what it takes?

Falconry is time consuming and expensive. One must begin as an apprentice to the sport to and work up to being a general or master level falconer. Alan Mumbower, the regional biologist and guru of the MDWFP’s Falcon Program puts it like this on the states website to see if falconry is for you:

“Will you, can you, commit part of your waking hours to a creature who at the very best of times will merely tolerate your presence, is as affectionate as a stone, and at the worst of times will cause you heartache and puncture wounds? Can you commit to an average of a half-hour a day, every day, and two to four hours on a hunting day, regardless of school, family, or job — for as long as you have your bird?”

Being a falconer is more time consuming that many other hunting disciplines and it is a lifestyle change that affects you 365-days a year. Let’s face it, no matter how dedicated a hunter you are, you still don’t have to feed and take care of your rifles, shotgun or bow everyday no matter what. With a bird of prey on the payroll, you will.

How much does it cost?

The good news is, the most priceless item and the one that you could not perform the sport without is free. You cannot legally buy a bird of prey for hunting, and must trap your own in the wild. However, before you head out to the woods to capture your new feathered friend you must first file as an applicant for an apprenticeship. In the application you must pass a certification review and inspection where you have to show your Mews (indoor facility for your raptor), your weathering area where the tethered raptor can fly, your jesses (anklet) for the bird, swivel, leash, gloves, bath containers, perches, scales and other equipment needed to care for and train your animal. This equipment is very specialized and like all good hunting gear costs money. Before you even go shopping for your equipment however you have to pay set up with the MDWFP to take your written falconry exam based on Federal and State regulations, and pay your permits and fees of no less than $100 (good for five years) plus the cost of your regular hunting license.

Your apprenticeship.

Current Mississippi State regulations only allow the apprentice falconer, who has to be a minimum of 14 years of age, to trap their new bird humanly during approved times after all of the above tests, fees and inspections have been taken care of. An apprentice can only possess a red – tailed hawk (the most commonly used for new falconers) either a red-shouldered hawk, or an American kestrel. The new falconer must train their first animal and use it for a complete hunting season before they move on to becoming a general falconer after two years. During this time you must work and be sponsored by a Master Falconer, by definition a sportsman with at least eight years of experience in the sport. General Falconers may possess two raptors and hunt without the tutelage of a master. Master falconers may possess three birds.

The payoff.

The two dozen Mississippi falconers that pursue this ancient sport would largely have it no other way. For their time, effort and money invested they are modern day beast masters who are literally one with nature. Many Mississippi falconers practice this most extreme of all bird hunting and use their raptors to take duck and dove as well as squirrel and rabbit effortlessly and with great majesty that must be seen to be appreciated.

Some Random Thoughts About The Human Mind

Sometimes you have a new thought, an idea, or eureka moment, but it’s not gutsy enough to expand into a reasonable length article or essay. So, here’s a potpourri of thoughts on all manner of aspects dealing with all that stuff that’s between your ears that’s too good not to record, but with not enough meat available to flesh out.

* You Then; You Now: That you that existed ten years ago share none of the fundamental particles, atoms, molecules, etc. that makes up that you that really does exist right now. Yet you in the here and now can connect with that you that existed a decade ago. You remember that you fell off your bicycle, and you may still have a scar of two visible from that former era and accident. So what bridges the gap and connects you today with you yesterday or that you ten years ago?

* Mind: When it comes to the human mind, I like the observation that we spend a lifetime trying to make a mark on the world when in fact it is the world making its mark on us.

* Mind: The mind is not a synonym for ‘the soul’. The mind is a thing because it requires energy to power it. The mind has reality, even if it is just a nebulous part of the brain (i.e. – the mind is not a separate structure or organ within the brain). If I destroy your brain, I destroy your mind. The mind is the repository of all those non-autonomous controls you have over your body; those voluntary functions (like doing your homework even if you don’t feel like it) or quasi-voluntary functions like holding your breath, forcing yourself to stay awake or hold off going to the bathroom. It’s where your memories are; where you think (processing information already in storage or newly received); where you make decisions. The mind is often divided into the subconscious mind and the conscious (self-awareness part of the) mind.

* Mind: Your mind contains all that makes you, you. It is the essence of you. It contains and controls your perceptions, knowledge, memories, creativity, emotions, your thinking, your understanding or comprehension or ability to figure things out, your personality, and it houses your dreams and daydreams. A frequent topic for discussion in philosophical circles is whether or not the mind, specifically your mind, is the be-all-and-end-all of cosmic reality. The answer IMHO is a resounding “no” because the mind cannot be a perpetual motion ‘machine’. In other words, the mind is like all things (assuming other things), a thing subject to deterioration over time or subject to entropy. All things go downhill – dust accumulates, desks get cluttered, stars run out of fuel, cars breakdown and people grow old. It takes a constant supply of external reality energy and matter (same difference) to keep entropy at bay. That renewal of supply might win the battles, but entropy ultimately wins the war.

* Worldviews: It struck home to me recently how often we shift our worldviews. We have no worldview at birth. Our worldview at five is one that’s full of self, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, imaginary friends, and parties with lots of cakes, cookies, soda pop and presents. All of that certainly changes, and drastically so, when you hit the teens when your worldview shifts to the opposite sex and sex and rebellion against all things adult. Maybe somewhere there’s an easing in period, a first stirrings, where you start to acquire a worldview of a God and heaven and angels and all things bright and beautiful (that’s probably imposed on you by parents and social mores. Then you get trust out (usually by choice) into the adult world that’s full of bills and responsibilities and employment and/or family life raising your own brats. During all of this you probably never really think of the ‘natural’ cosmic context you find yourself in. But that tends to come as you pass the half-way mark and start heading downhill. The Big Questions come more to the fore and you start to adopt a worldview that makes comforting sense away from the normal routine worldview of taxes and nasty bosses and your kids in trouble with the police again. Again, for most, that tends to revolve around God and heaven and angels, etc. But some people start thinking more outside the comforting religious box and more about space and time, and before and after, and finite vs. infinity and what non-religious Big Picture makes the most philosophical and logical common sense. And whatever specific you come up with can also shift as you reflect on your earlier reflections without end as new concepts and connections come into being or focus which you’ve got to ponder and fit into the master worldview jigsaw puzzle you’ve established.

* Consciousness: Every living thing from humble microbes to plants, jellyfish to frogs, birds to cats to primates have consciousness because all respond to external stimuli in ways that are not predictable by classical physics (unlike a rock expanding and contracting as the temperature rises and falls). From conception to brain death you feel and respond to stimuli 60/60/24/7/52, like gravity and temperature, etc. If you respond, in un-rock like ways, you have consciousness.

* Consciousness: Consciousness is just the awareness of your surroundings in the here and now. You have to draw on your subconscious to identify the nature of those surroundings. Self-awareness is acting on what you became aware of, the nature of those surroundings and for that you also have to draw down upon your subconscious. You’re aware that you hear a noise and you need your subconscious (experience and memory) to identify it. Maybe it’s thunder; or a car cash; or your dog barking; or a door slamming or a jet plane flying overhead (which you then need to identify as a normal commercial jet or a military fighter jet). Your self-awareness of that will then draw down upon your experience and memories for the proper way to respond to the nature of that noise. You may need to secure the property if there’s a thunderstorm coming; or call the police/ambulance if it was a car crash; or let your dog in, etc. You’ll self-awareness will respond differently if you smell something consciously and that something according to those subconscious memories you immediately draw on tells you it is something cooking vs. something burning. In the case of the noise or the smell, a one day old baby couldn’t make that distinction between this or that since it has no subconscious memory bank on which to draw though it consciously hears the noise and smells the smell just as you do.

* Consciousness, Theory of: Actually I don’t think it’s all that mysterious; well it may be mysterious but it’s biologically universal. Every living thing from humble microbes to plants, jellyfish to frogs, birds to cats to primates have consciousness because all respond to external stimuli in ways that are not predictable by classical physics (unlike a rock expanding and contracting as the temperature rises and falls). From conception to brain death you feel and respond to stimuli 60/60/24/7/52, like gravity and temperature, etc. If you respond, in un-rock like ways, you are self-aware or have consciousness. If you should have some different definition in mind, then perhaps look for a dividing line between that which is clearly not exhibiting consciousness by that definition and what is. What is the difference in biochemistry between that which is and that which is not? Explore that and you’re on the way to an answer!

* Self-Awareness: Consciousness can be expressed as a series of Russian dolls, which probably doesn’t actually explain what it is, but it’s interesting. We start with: “I’m self aware”. Then, “I’m self aware that I’m self aware”. Then that string is followed by “I’m self aware that I’m self aware that I’m self aware” and so on down the line unto infinity.

* Self-Awareness: Here’s a wicked thought experiment. Create two clones of yourself. Raise them to maturity. Then, remove their brains and toss them away (this is just a thought experiment and so morals and ethics can be bypassed). Now have your brain removed (and toss your body away). Have one hemisphere transplanted into one clone; the other hemisphere transplanted into the second clone. While the two hemispheres of your brain have slightly different emphasis in terms of functionality, you can function as a reasonable whole with just one hemisphere. Now the question arises, will you be self-aware in two bodies at the exact same time? You could accomplish twice as much and be totally aware of the totality!

* Self-Awareness: Presumably your self-awareness begins at conception, and thus there is self-awareness even at the cellular level. Now if you, and here ‘you’ could be a plant or a microbe, respond to stimuli (external or internal), then you are self-aware, albeit awareness of self comes in degrees – a mammal is more self-aware than a cactus even though both can respond to stimuli. If you respond to stimuli in a way that’s not predictable by the laws of physics then you are self-aware. A rock cannot be a ‘you’ since it does not respond to stimuli in any way that physics cannot predict and thus a rock is not self-aware.

* Self-Awareness: Fast-forwarding to the future, if your mind has been downloaded into a hardware (silicon and steel) body, you can always upgrade to the next and newest model. I see the spawning of a robotic fashion industry! The 2050 you wouldn’t be caught dead inside a 2045 robotic model! The other ramification is that you can ‘clone’ yourself (or rather your mind) by downloading your mind as many times into as many robotic hardware forms as you wish. Perhaps one robotic form that’s designed for undersea exploration; one designed for mountain climbing; another that’s small enough that it can explored the most claustrophobic of cave systems. If your mind exists simultaneously in many different robotic bodies, then you must have more than just a single self-awareness, simultaneously.

* Comprehension: Try as I might, I could never teach my cats the barest and most basic rudiments of algebra or even those boneheaded elementary mathematics of arithmetic that elementary schoolkids master. I could never get my cats to understand and appreciate the ancient Egyptian cat cults and goddesses. Even the concept of biological evolution – the how and why cats evolved into cats and the ancestry of my cats would be so much triple-Dutch to them. Their wetware, neurochemistry, etc. just isn’t up to this. Sunshine gives them warmth – that they understand but not how the sun shines.

Now, the upshot of that is, despite the human arrogance that our minds can comprehend everything part and parcel of life, the Universe and everything, perhaps we just can’t through absolutely no fault of our own. Maybe human brains, in the here and now, are not capable of figuring all things out, like the meaning of quantum physics, and the theory of everything (TOE) which is basically a theory of quantum gravity and coming to terms with what exactly is dark matter and dark energy and answering all those other questions that have gone without resolution for thousands of years.

* Free Will: I think most of us would agree that a reasonable definition of free will is the ability to voluntarily and consciously choose between two (or more) courses of action. You make a decision by your own free will that’s generated by your internal conscious self with no external influences, like someone, even Mother Nature, holding a gun to your head! However…

What if you view an optical illusion, an apparent reality of which there are numerous classic examples available? Initially you have two choices. You can convince yourself that what you are seeing is indeed reality (wrong choice) or you can convince yourself that what you’re seeing is not reality (right choice). But that’s mission impossible.

You know – you are consciously aware – that what you are looking at is an illusion and not reality. Can you now, of your own free will, take that course of action that will actually convince yourself that what you are looking at is an illusion and not reality? You know it’s an illusion, but can you convince yourself of that fact? Try as you might, no matter what, you will still see that apparent reality – the illusion – even though you know it’s just an illusion. Your brain is fooled and your mind can’t do a damn thing about it. Your free will cannot free yourself from seeing the illusion. You cannot negate that illusionary effect of your own free will even though you know it is not reality.

Now some optical illusions give you the apparent free will to view the illusion as this thing or that thing (like the classic two faces or one vase), but you can’t sustain that. You will shift perspective between the two illusionary options quite against what your own free will dictates. Further, you don’t have the free will third option of seeing neither of the two illusionary options.

In a somewhat similar vein, watching one of the season three episodes of “Through the Wormhole”, part of that episode, exploring the subconscious, showed the experiment of a test subject who was fitted with a pair of camera-glasses that showed him an image of a test dummy dressed the same as the test subject. The test subject was fully aware of this. The test subject was then conditioned by being stroked with a rod while at the same time viewing the test dummy being stroked. Then, the test dummy was suddenly violently assaulted, and of course the test subject reacted as if he were being assaulted and not the dummy. Even when the test subject was told that the dummy was going to be assaulted, he was aware of this in his conscious mind, he still couldn’t help himself via his subconscious reacting as if he were being assaulted instead of the dummy.

In short, your conscious mind cannot override or overturn your subconscious, free will be damned.

* Free Will: You probably believe you have free will. What you are actually thinking or saying is that you believe your brain has free will since you are your brain. Your brain is what makes you, you. Or, in other words, your brain believes your brain has free will. But your brain is just an interconnected lump, with the consistence of soft butter in a vat of salty water, of neurons, synapses, all firing tither and yon due to neurochemistry and biochemistry. And of course chemistry is just molecules and atoms and therefore electrons, neutrons and protons doing their electron, neutron and proton thing. So how is free will an emergent property of physics and chemistry?

Say you make a decision and then direct your brain to set in train whatever it takes to make that decision so, which is to say your brain decides to do something and then directs itself to make it so. There’s something odd about that notion. Your heart doesn’t decide to have a heart attack and then proceed to implement that decision.

Say you, or rather your brain, decides to cross the road, and puts in motion what’s needed for you to cross the road and so you start to cross the road. You would tell me that you decided to cross the road of your own free will. As you are crossing the road a runaway car heads right at you and so you decide to leap out of the way. But did you really consciously decide, of your own free will to leap out of the way, or did you just do it without any hemming and hawing and pondering whether or not to leap out of the way. You would probably tell me you had no choice in the matter, you just leapt out of the way, yet you (or your brain) still had a choice and still made a decision.

So what is the difference in principle between your decision to cross the street and your decision to leap out of the way of the runaway car? I maintain there isn’t any and thus your initial decision to cross the road was predetermined, by your subconscious if nothing else even before you became aware that you had apparently made a free will conscious decision.

Actually it has been experimentally verified that decision-making stems from the subconscious and not the conscious mind. Your perception that at least some of your decision-making is made consciously is an illusion. Therefore, there’s no such thing as conscious free will (which makes perfect sense if we live in a Simulated (Virtual Reality) Universe).

* Free Will: Does free will require you to have an infinite or unlimited number of choices, or a finite number? If the latter, you’re still confined in a box, just a slightly larger box than if your box confined you to one and only one choice.

* Free Will: The ultimate lack of free will associated with you is that you had absolutely no say in being conceived and being popped headlong into this world. You had no choice in your ancestry or in your genetics or your sex or even what historical era you were to make your way in. Now if you have absolutely no free will in these rather important, in fact absolutely fundamental, parts of your life being kick-started, why should you expect any free will from there on in?

Of course in some societies you’d have no choice in schooling or religion or upbringing or even to the person you got hitched to, etc. But all of that really falls under a separate category of sociology and culture and has nothing to do with the metaphysical or usual notion of what it means to have free will.

* Dreaming: From the moment we wake up, until the time we go to sleep, our brain gets bombarded with sensory inputs – sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. When we go to sleep however, we’re in sensory isolation. Unless it’s a really loud bang, or super strong odour, or the pet dog jumps on top of you, you sleep soundly through it all. It’s not good to be in a sensory isolation tank for eight hours straight, which is what sleep is. So, how does the brain manufacture sensory input? Dreams! Apart from the automatic functions of the brain/nervous system, like breathing, your brain keeps active via dreaming. It’s generating images and receiving back those images – busy work if you will.

The reason therefore that it’s hard to recall your dreams, well it’s akin to short-term memory. Once awake, once the brain is in forward gear, in high-drive, what was dreamt about is now as irrelevant as what you had for dinner 101 nights ago.

* Reality: The only thing you can be absolutely sure of that exists – your definitive reality – is your mind. Your mind is the essence of what makes you, you, but even that doesn’t exist forever – your reality is fleeting. That aside, everything external to your mind is iffy in reality, including your own body, something also external to your mind (housed in the brain thingy of yours). You may say that ducks exist external to you because if you see a duck and it flies like a duck and it waddles like a duck and it quacks like a duck and it lays duck eggs then your reality includes a duck. Except, when you take, or think you take, or dream you take a dose of LSD, the duck then morphs into a rainbow coloured striped griffin. Or, you wake up and the duck vanishes from your (dream) ‘reality)’ – So much for ducks being a part of your external reality.

You might argue that there has to be an external cosmic reality including ducks and your body since the brain which houses your mind is subject to the physical effects of entropy (increasing disorder over time) and thus needs a constant supply of matter (like oxygen) and energy (say chemical energy derived from the food you eat) which only an external reality can provide to restore order. It’s hard to argue against the premise that the mind is like all other things subject to entropy. The mind is not the exception to the entropy rules, rule. But exactly how entropy is overcome (albeit temporarily) is up for grabs – things might not always be as they appear to be. For example, your mind could reside inside a computer programmed to give the illusion of an external reality of a cosmos and a world and your body. However, that computer is also subject to entropy and thus requires an energy source (in this case electrical, not chemical). However, that source of energy must have an external reality to that of the computer which houses your mind. A computer is no more a perpetual motion machine than your brain is.

* Reality, Alternate: Any alternative reality (i.e. – higher realms of existence; spirit worlds; non-corporeal beings; astral planes; etc.) expounded by those who have experienced that so-called ‘reality’ by deliberately altering their brain chemistry via ingesting, injecting or inhaling various brain chemistry altering substances (alcohol, LSD, marijuana, petrol/glue sniffing, pain killers, or just any old generic ‘magic mushroom’), or undergoing sensory isolation is totally suspect, has no credibility and is not to be believed. That equally applies to involuntary brain chemistry alterations (i.e. – exposure to bring flashing lights, lack of sleep, oxygen deprivation at high altitude, long-term fasting, or eating foods that inadvertently contain brain chemistry altering chemicals).

You certainly don’t accept your mind-generated alternative realities you experience in dreamland when your brain is in sensory isolation mode, so why accept the ‘magic mushroom’ variety?

It’s hard enough coming to terms with everyday reality when you are wide awake and stone cold sober, so who needs to unnecessary complicate things with alternative ‘realities’? In fact, even when you are wide awake and stone cold sober you cannot always trust your mind to reveal to you really real reality – optical illusions anyone?

This alone blows out of the water most of what lumps together as New Age claptrap, like altered states of consciousness. You may alter your consciousness, but that doesn’t expose you to really real reality.

* Reality, Personal: Assuming there is a really real reality out there (as opposed to virtual reality via software or wetware), you perceive relatively little of it (like radio waves) and what the substance and structure of it is. What you do perceive (like light waves and sound waves) is second-hand, filtered and distorted having gone through several phase transitions from source to mind; from initial action to your final reaction.

* Reality, Ultimate: I’ve viewed many interviews with those to pontificate about ultimate reality being wrapped up in the human mind and consciousness. That’s nonsense. To get to an ultimate reality, start by removing one level of unnecessary complexity – life, mind, consciousness, etc. Nanoseconds to even millions of years post the Big Bang event, the Universe was sterile. There was no life, not even a proto-cell far less a microbe. What was ultimate reality then? There must have been an ultimate reality. Whatever the ultimate reality was then, it still is. Life, mind and consciousness are irrelevant.

* Telepathy: There’s one absolute reason I’m convinced telepathy doesn’t exist. As I go about my daily walkabout routine and associated observations, I’m forever passing out mental thoughts and images of what I think of many of the deadbeat drivers and other lesser forms of humanity I spy with my little eyes. My thoughts tend not to be very complementary to say the least. But since the lowlifes and rift-rafts haven’t ever proceeded to immediately stop their lowlife activities and drop what ever rift-raft things they were up to, to instead change direction towards me and beat me about the heat and body unto a bloody pulp for my unflattering thoughts, I conclude telepathy doesn’t exist. If it did, I doubt I’d be typing these thoughts now.

* Telepathy Revisited: There just might be a (slight) case to answer after all. That telepathy isn’t, isn’t silent one or two way crystal clear communication over vast distances between two separate brains or minds. What telepathy might be is that vague sense that there’s another mind out there, close by though, that has some resonance with your own. The classic case is that sense that you just know that someone else is watching or staring at you even though you can’t see who it is.

There has to be a medium by which this transfer can well, transfer from them to you. That medium apparently is Earth’s electromagnetic (EM) field. Brain thoughts or activity is electromagnetic in nature. It perhaps might be barely possible for those brain EM waves to be carried via Earth’s EM field to another person’s brain. That other person would at best just have a quasi-vague sensation that they were sensing, well, something, without being able to put a definitive finger on the specifics to many decimal places.

The non-human evidence is how large flocks of birds or schools of fish can in near unison turn on a dime. Since the “turn” command isn’t vocal, and visual observations would make for unacceptable lag times, the idea is that the communication is EM in nature from brain to brain at light speed via Earth’s EM field as the in-between medium.

Top Cartoon Friend Duos!

Friendship isn’t always easily described. The Eskimos, they say, have a hundred different words for snow. Unfortunately, the English language isn’t quite as innovative, so friendship remains more as a cherished feeling among all of us. In cartoons we see such friendship which the characters share with true humane feelings. Legendary friendships among cartoon characters include-

1. Tom and Jerry:

Tom and Jerry are the Academic award winning cat (Tom) and mouse (Jerry) team who formed the basis of a successful cartoon series .They share the perfect recipe of friendship in the ambivalence of loving and teasing each other. Tom is very quick-tempered and thin-skinned, while Jerry is independent and opportunistic. Though very energetic and determined, Tom is no match for Jerry’s brains and wits .yet they compliment each other like cheese and milk.

2. Archie and Jughead:

The red-headed 17-year old teenager has the unique bonding with his best friend Jughead Jones, who has been his friend since they were kids. In spite of being a Casanova,Archie is always seen sharing his deepest secrets with Jughead. When Jughead first came to Riverdale, he was in a bad mood and tended to dismiss Archie. But Archie, of good heart, tried to cheer up Jughead; they became inseparable ever since. Often Jughead has to help Archie out from a tricky situation, which usually involves girls.

3. Chip ‘n’ Dale:

Chip ‘n’ Dale are two fictional, animated chipmunks created by Walt Disney. They are inseparable pair who together fight with odds, struggle for the affections of another chipmunk, Clarice, annoy Donald Duck and solve mysteries. Chip is the (slightly) more intelligent one with the black nose, and Dale is the one with the red nose and gapped teeth.

4. Mowgli and Bagheera:

Mowgli, the feral child from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book was unknown to the laws of the jungle. He befriends Bagheera who educates and trains him to survive in the jungle. Mowgli is the most prominent fictional character having so many talking animal friends who remains in his thick and thin.

5. Flintstones and Rubbles:

The friendly neighbors- Fred and Wilma Flintstones and Barmey and Betty Rubbles are comical instances of people abiding “Love thy neighbor” theory. The quartet hold each others hand in their highs and lows, while the husbands are the best of friends . Fred, the henpecked one is stupid and most of the times ends up in trouble and Barmey ,the smarter one rescues his best friend in each occasion.

Whether we have a Tom or a Barmey as friends, they are always special people. We can’t pick our family, But our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the stars in the sky. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life-good or bad.

Strength Training & Conditioning For the Rugby World Cup 2011 by Pulling a 12 Ton Truck Or Plane

Have you seen the strongman competition? Won by Zydrūnas Savickas in 2009, it is held annually and often involves giant men such as Bill Kazmaier, Mariusz Pudzianowski and Magnus Ver Magnusson performing feats of strength that are unimaginable and awe inspiring. Performing stunts like lifting atlas balls, the ‘Hercules hold’, keg toss, flipping over giant tyres, ‘duck walk’ and car carry, against both the clock and competitors; the strong man competition is the ultimate strength event in the world. The strength and conditioning of these athletes is phenomenal. There strength conditioning not only involves the ability to lift massive weights but to carry them over distances which takes into consideration the cardio vascular aspect of their training. When you see the strongman events you cannot help but notice that some of these athletes push themselves to the point of bleeding through their noses. The effort and dedication put into the event is out of sacrificial love to be the best no matter the cost. I would not want to tread lightly into the gym workout or training program of any of these Incredible Hulks let alone compete in Strongman.

One of the strongman events is the pulling of a truck or airplane with a rope. Vehicles such as transport trucks, trams, buses or airplanes are pulled across a 30 metre course by hand as fast as possible. In 2007 a fire engine truck was pulled and in 2008 a coal truck. The truck itself sometimes weighs over 12 tonnes. How is a human being able to pull a truck that heavy? What kind of weight training, strength training exercise, strength conditioning or gym workout would one follow to attain such monster proportions of strength? Some of these athletes are able to pull the truck past 30 metres in approximately 30-40 seconds. This demonstrates raw strength together with endurance and speed. How is a human being able to perform such a feat? Does science hold an answer to this? Is this all geometry and physics? Or is this something to do with the strength training anatomy of the individual concerned i.e. is he a superman?

Yes it takes phenomenal strength to do this. But is there more to it? Examining the truck or airplane pull in detail – when you look at the stance of the athlete in the event, you notice his stance is somewhat similar to a 100m sprinter in the blocks. Have a close look at Dwain Chambers, Usain Bolt or Assafa Powel in their blocks before their sprint off in the 100m. The strongman stance is similar. They all tend to lean forward at a 45 degree angle.

A ball thrown into the air at a 45 degree angle travels the furthest. A cricket batsman like Vivian Richards from the West Indies or Aravinda De Silva from Sri Lanka are able to hit the leather cricket ball out of the cricket ground, past the spectators, over the sea gulls and into the nearby housing complexes by targeting their hits at a 45 degree angle. This is pure physics. A projectile fired at 45 degrees travels the furthest as at this angle most distance is covered at maximum force. This theory is implemented in firing missiles and rockets. Therefore by maintaining a 45 degree angle to the ground, the strength training anatomy of a strongman is able to drive the most force against the truck / plane he is pulling. A higher angle exerts less force and possibly causes difficulties in balancing as his centre of mass / gravity is thrown off course. A lower angle reduces the frictional pull the strongman has on the ground. The strength exertion at a 45 degree angle is the greatest.

Having a look at the truck / plane pull reveals that a strongman does not perform one single pull (or thrust forward), but instead exerts a sustained set of continuous repetitive pulls. His strength conditioning involves momentum. He does not explode with one pull alone but uses the speed from each pull to drive the next pull. Bodybuilders often avoid this sort of training as momentum uses physics rather than muscle fibre to make the weights move in their training motion. Each pull from the strongman slackens the rope before being pulled again. Friction causes the truck to slow down after each pull. This strongman event is likened to a strength training exercise of performing a 220 Kg squat for more than 40 repetitions in less than 30-40 seconds.  Does that sound doable to you?

What does all this have to do with Rugby? The World Cup is not too far away and a lot needs to be done in preparation. Strength training and more so – functional strength training, is likely to be the decisive factor in the Rugby World Cup 2011. The Tri Nations 2009 revealed that strength, force and endurance crowned South Africa the victors. There is just about time for teams across the world to tap into functional strength training and drink the spoils of warrior grade training. Who better does one learn from than the kings of strength and endurance? The strongman.

Rugby League or Rugby Union; it really does not matter which version of the game you play. Driving forward with consistent force, sustained waves of attack with the hope of penetrating the opposition defences and forming thundering walls of defence are part and parcel of the game. The strongman truck pull immediately reminds me of the Rugby Union scrum. The body positioning, the stances and the goals i.e. moving forward against a force, (the force of the opposition scrum and the frictional force on the truck are in the same directions!) are strikingly similar. Following the strongman example, if a rugby player positions himself at a 45 degree angle when driving forward, he is likely to exert the most force and power. Thereby he is able to achieve the most from his strength training through the leverage of his angle of attack. When the whole scrum comes together in this formation they are a force to be reckoned with. Some scrum teams weigh over a tonne and I wonder how many 747 s they would be able to pull. The scrum also needs to move forward in repetitive bursts of thrusting forward. They all need to be synchronized to exert the most force. I immediately begin to envision the movie 300 where the Spartan Warriors came together to form a defensive shielded group that thrust forward in synchronized harmony. The maximum force is exerted in this manner.

Most crowd pleasing moments in the game of rugby are when a carrier or defender are pummelled to the grass in a tackle. The more ‘road runner cartoon type’ the tackle, the more reaction one gets from the crowd. We are like the ancient Romans during the gladiator battles. Most ‘victims’ of such tackles are those who stood tall in the tackle. We learned that if you position yourself above 45 degrees you may have issues with balance and you certainly cannot exert much force whilst you are not balanced. Your centre of gravity / mass is easily shifted from a point of balance and you could easily be tipped over no matter how strong, powerful or heavy you are. If you are below 45 degrees you are likely to fall forward or slip in wet grassy conditions. At 45 degrees any defender has a fair chance of using his utmost strength to floor an attacker. Any attacker is most effective when maintaining a 45 degree angle when charging forward. Any defenders caught above or below 45 degrees are vulnerable and open up a weak link in the 300 Spartan Warrior formation. They will also find it hard pressed to get down to position quick enough. As a carrier, keep your eyes always open for such opportunities. As a defender, always keep to formation.

Have you ever wondered why Power Lifters perform their movements rapidly? Whilst bodybuilders perform slower repetitions but much more of them. Power lifter movements such as the bench press, dead lift or squat are performed rapidly. Power lifters are the pinnacle; the top of strength conditioning individuals.  In fact, for bench pressing or squats, lowering the weight quickly and using that momentum to burst upwards is one way to trick your muscles to pushing heavier weights; although that would have bodybuilder Olympia gurus like Dorian Yates swear out at you. Momentum is critical. Physics dictates that F = MA i.e. Force = Mass multiplied by Acceleration. The faster a player is moving, the more force he is likely to exert on impact. In the scrum, charging, rolling mauls or defending, the more momentum the more force. The opposition needs to exert an equal force to stop you. Even if they tackle you by your ankles, their forearms, arms and shoulders will have to absorb the force of your impact and they are guaranteed never to forget about you. Strength and speed attribute to power. Power will decide who wins the Rugby World Cup 2011. Will it be the All Blacks?  Or the Springboks? England? Fiji? Functional strength training will reveal the new champions.

Olympic lifters (watch out for them in the London Olympics followed by Samba in Rio!) also capitalize on speed. In strength conditioning it is important to include repetition. That is, train your muscles repetitively for the movement you want to perform. There is a very good reason why Olympic athletes may not be able to bench press as much (I often find people on the internet criticize strongman competitors when they find out they cannot bench as much either). That is because of our strength training anatomy. Diving into human biology, our brains build neural pathways. A neural pathway tells the brain that a certain set of muscles need to be used in a certain sequence under a certain amount of force. Our bodies adapt to the strains imposed upon them and build the necessary strength training anatomy to handle the load. This adds strength to the statement – practice makes perfect. Determining one person’s strength over another is futile as it all depends on the function they have been training for. Sometimes the lanky looking guy is more dangerous down the dark alley than the big bench monster. Using momentum together with conditioning your body (by repeating the strength exercises) is what delivers the most power. As a part of your strength training, weights training, gym workout or training program, include speed and repetition to push or pull heavier weights.

There is still a lot be learned from the science of strongman competitions. Strongman competitors, Power Lifters and Olympic lifters all provide unique learning points for Rugby players. It is wisdom to learn battle plans from Spartan Warriors; it is wisdom to learn about combat from Gladiators and it is wisdom to learn from the professional strongmen of this world on how a physical game like Rugby could be mastered and taken to a whole new level.

There will be much more to come.

My Long Overdue Visit to Ireland!

Can you think of a country you have wanted to visit for the past 20 years or so? For me, that country is Ireland, and I’m grateful to have visited County Kerry, Killarney, Ireland in May 2012. From the moment in early January when it was decided that I would just do it and plan the trip, I thought of Ireland pretty much on a daily basis. Unbelievably, a lot of people are not avid travellers, and especially Americans, many do not travel overseas frequently. When you limit yourself to just remaining in your country, and maybe visiting border countries, you miss out so much on what life has to offer. Let me tell you a few things about why I wanted to visit Ireland.

Back in the 1980s, when I was a fan of U2, I wanted to visit the country the rock band hailed from. I was only a teenager that the time, so I just fantasized about travelling to Ireland one day. Consequently, I started to pay more attention to the culture of Ireland, the major news stories, and watching Irish themed films, and adapting a fondness for some Irish actors. But before I decided to travel to Ireland, my fascination with England took precedence so much so, that for the 15 years that I have vacationed in England, I always flew past Ireland, often thinking, I’ll make it there some day.

However, after my last trip to London in December 2011, which was my 9th trip, I figured it was time to do whatever I could to make a trip to Ireland possible. I started to research some local travel agents, but they were not helpful, and they were also too expensive and featuring Irish locations that I didn’t want to go to at the time, and they focused on large group tours. I knew I wanted to visit the touristy city of Killarney which is in the Southwestern part of Ireland. And since I was going alone, it was best that I just make the plans on my own using popular travel websites to research flights and hotel information. I bought several different books about Killarney and SW Ireland to help me with the planning of my trip.

A very important thing to remember when it comes to making holiday plans is to decide when to visit. Due to work and college obligations, and for budgetary reasons, I decided that the very end of May was the ideal time to go. I saved over 100 euros by booking a six-night stay at the Killarney Court Hotel (May 24-31), instead of staying there for five-nights one week later! The peak tour season starts June 1st, and doing a simple pre-booking price check at hotels in the area confirmed that clearly. Another caveat in traveling to Killarney is that because it’s such a popular holiday destination, that you must book your hotel early. There’s nothing more headache inducing in booking a vacation to a particular town and then being locked out of all the hotels in the town, and having to book a hotel outside of town where you need to hire a car to get into the city. No thanks, I’m decisive, and so I booked early. I stayed at a popular hotel, and it was a ten minute walk from the town center. This was perfect as it allowed me to walk for a short spell through a Killarney neighborhood, and thereby allowing me to truly enjoy local life.

I selected Killarney also because of the Killarney National Park and its beautiful hiking trails. I spent a great deal of time in the park enjoying sights of beauty that I don’t see here at home, or have seen elsewhere. I also used Deros Tours for day tours to two key travel adventures: The Ring of Kerry, and The Gap of Dunloe. In a nutshell, these two tours are must see tours for visitors to Killarney. The Ring of Kerry is nearly an all day tour that takes you around in a circle of Co. Kerry and the Dingle Bay, and it is absolutely beautiful. But my favorite was the Gap of Dunloe because as a hiker, I was able to walk through a mountain valley and feel like the only human around… until I saw a car or jaunting car pass by with people in it. The rocky mountainous scenic views remind one of Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings films. Only the brave and strong walk through the Gap of Dunloe, and I am one of them. As an avid photographer, the pictures I took from these tours were fantastic! I will enlarge and frame them, and I hope to sell some to local businesses, and perhaps give one to my brother for his law firm office.

The people of Killarney are lively and polite, and the food was great as well, I especially enjoyed a lovely meal of duck and buffalo mozzarella at the West End House, presented by an attentive wait staff. Killarney has been voted as the cleanest city in Ireland, and it’s true, the town was spotless. I’m lucky in that I can travel, and that I travel to really neat cities, and they all stick with me and I always yearn to return to them. But there is something spiritual about my visit to Ireland. It’s such a mystical, laid back, and beautifully green country, that invites you to visit again and again. I had a conversation with an American couple who was on their fourth visit to Killarney within seven years! That was proof to me of the power of Killarney to lure its visitors back time and time again. I think about my trip to Killarney almost daily, and I can’t wait to visit again… it will be much sooner than later.

I hope to travel there again with a friend or two, just so that I can be able to enjoy the adventures and talk to someone along the way. I also want to go up to Dublin for a few days on my next trip. The convenience of Ireland is that every large city is connected by rail or bus. And it is common for travelers to Ireland to fly into the airport of their choice, stay in that town, and then take the bus or train to other cities. I flew on Aer Lingus, a nice small airliner, into Shannon airport. From there, I took two buses to get to Killarney. A car can be hired at the airport to drive to Killarney, but only if you are accustomed to driving UK style. It sounds cumbersome, but the connections between the buses at Limerick give you enough time to transfer between buses. So, if you have the inclination, please visit Ireland, there’s no other place quite like it. And by the way, I added on a few nights in London after Killarney. Some travel habits are hard to break.
