A Naturalist Perspective Reflection on the Film The Lion King

The Lion King is an ideal film to watch for students studying the natural sciences. It features the application of several concepts that are tackled in the classroom, particularly the relationship between different organisms and their environment.

The film presented the nature of the strongest consumer and predator nest to the man in the Kingdom Animalia – the lion. In the film, it was portrayed by Simba, the heir of Mufasa, as the king of Pride Rock. The lion is considered as the chief in its habitat because aside from its large size, thundering roars, and royal appearance, it is apparently the most physically powerful among all the other organisms. Hence, Simba inherited the whole kingdom of Pride Rock, covering “everything the light touches.”

The Lion King showed the good-natured Simba as sociable in nature, befriending other organisms as Pumba and Timon, and demonstrating kindness to those who deserve it. In actual life scenario, however, lions are only companionable to their fellow species, specifically, the members of their group which is called the pride. The film showed this unit as comprising a family as that of Simba and his friend Nala. For the reason that male lions wander until they are fully grown, challenging some pride males from another territory and taking over that area once they win, in reality, lionesses dominate a pride.

Living a sedentary existence by settling in a specific area where food and water are abundant, lions take the lives of weaker animals that belong to a different group, such as the antelopes, zebras, and buffaloes as demonstrated in the film. After feasting on a sumptuous meal, these carnivores relax for several hours after which they return to their innate hunting lifestyle.

Another concept presented in the film is that of the tropical grassland or the savannah. Pride Rock, which is the location of the film, is an example of this dry and grassy plain. The film showed this type of biome which is tropical in nature and is much drier than tropical rainforests. Specifically dominant in the African continent, rainfall in savannahs is very seasonal and is usually followed by long periods of drought. This nature makes them sparsely populated by trees which only grow where there are deep cracks in the surface or deep soil, permitting contact with the water underneath. Palm trees, fruit-bearing trees, and an extensive cover of grasses are present as the producers. They provide food for the animal inhabitants, which in the film are the lions, antelopes, and zebras. The conflagrations which broke out in the film naturally occur in actual life scenario. This phenomenon maintains plant-life and stimulates the growth of grasses.

The concept of the savannah debunks the usual reference to lions as “Kings of the jungle” since these robust meat-eaters do not prefer to live in jungles but rather in the open woodlands where trees are not plentiful. The Lion King proves the fact that lions are inclined to live in savannahs because they appreciate the cool climate. Above all, running behind and catching their prey is less difficult for them because of their brownish yellow coat which enables them to be camouflaged in dead grasses which are similar with their color. A Summary of the Novel "The Green Mile"

Any summary of the novel “The Green Mile” by Stephen King has to include a bit about the famous horror novelist, himself. He published this novel in 1996 as a serial novel, and the first edition actually came out in six small, paperbacks, which were later made into one novel. King is most well known for his horror novels, so as this summary of the novel “The Green Mile” shows, this book, set in the 1930s, is a departure from some of his other works.

Plot

The summary of the novel “The Green Mile” includes the plot and setting. The story takes place in 1932 on the E Block (Death Row) in Cold Mountain Penitentiary in Georgia. It is narrated by the main character, Paul, who is the captain of the prison guards who preside over E Block. “The Green Mile” of the title is the corridor between the cells of the cell block that leads to the execution room. The corridor is covered in green linoleum, hence, the “last” or green mile the inmates take to their death.

The story follows John Coffey, a large, black inmate convicted of raping and murdering two young white girls, and the other two inmates on death row, along with the guards who watch over them. Coffey is special, as Paul discovers, and he has magical healing abilities that become apparent. He befriends a small white mouse, who he names Mr. Jingles, and heals the mouse when the brutal guard Percy Wetmore tried to kill it. He also heals Paul’s kidney infection, and later, Paul spirits him out of the prison to heal the warden’s wife’s brain tumor. Coffey “transfers” this brain disease to Wetmore, the sadistic guard who the inmates and staff dislike. Wetmore never recovers and spends the rest of his life in a mental institution.

Eventually, Paul discovers that Coffey is exceptional in many areas. It turns out he did not murder the two girls, another inmate (William Wharton) did. Coffey does not want to be pardoned, and dies in the electric chair because he cannot bear the cruelties of real life. After his death, Paul discovers that each of the people Coffey has healed live extraordinarily long lives. Paul is 108 at the end of the book, and Mr. Jingles is 64. They have no idea how long they will live, and the novel ends.

Characters

A summary of the novel “The Green Mile” includes the characters in the novel.

Paul Edgecombe – Paul is the main character of the novel. A prison guard, by the end of the story he is an old man narrating this part of his life to a friend who is writing his memoir.

John Coffey – A nearly 7-foot-tall black man, a convicted murderer awaiting his death sentence on death row in the prison. He befriends a white mouse and heals people of their diseases.

Percy Wetmore – A sadistic prison guard who everyone dislikes. He torments the prisoners, tries to kill Mr. Jingles, the mouse, and deliberately botches an execution where the inmate suffers terribly. He keeps his job because he is related to the governor.

Eduard Delacroix – A Cajun man convicted of arson, he is essentially a coward. He is the man who dies a horrible death at the hands of Wetmore.

William Wharton – Another convict, it turns out he is the one who actually committed the murder attributed to John Coffey. He is wild and frightening, and attempts to disrupt the prison as much as he can before he dies.

Mr. Jingles – The white mouse that lives to be 64 and is befriended by John Coffey.

Some Basic Information About The Golden Retriever

This dog is the fourth most popular breed in the United States, and also extremely popular in Europe. Their beautiful golden coat and energetic nature make them the perfect family dog. Also trained to help the blind, detect drugs, and assist with search and rescue, there is therefore a very high level of interest in golden retriever information.

The creation of the breed in fact directly correlates to advancements in gun technology. As guns were commonly used for the sport of hunting in Western Europe, fowl that was shot from increasingly greater distances would be harder to find. Thus the need for a new breed of retriever dog was born.

The first of this new breed was the result of crossing a black-coated retriever with the now unfortunately extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Their four pups went on to be bred with more sporting dogs, including the Irish Setter, the sandy-colored Bloodhound, and the St. John’s Water Dog. The best qualities were taken from each of these dogs, resulting in the dog we know and celebrate today.

This dog has a great personality and a love for all people. It is a poor guard dog because of the inevitable befriending of everyone they meet, but this makes them a great dog to have around kids of all ages. Their great work ethic and huge desire to please everyone around them means they can do lots of different jobs. Trained and used in search and rescue missions by police forces all over the world, they are also great seeing-eye dogs. Having this dog for a companion creates a positive environment for disabled people and helps them with day-to-day tasks.

Owing to the fact that these dogs like so much attention, they are not for people who cannot devote a lot of time to their dogs. If you work a lot, or live in an apartment, you may want to consider a different breed. As sporting dogs, they need to exercise often to release energy and stress. They like to run, swim and play, so their owners need to be or become almost as energetic as they are!

They are very smart and are easily trained. One of their very favourite activities is learning new tricks. Excellent Frisbee players, and are obviously masters at playing fetch, they are very loving, smart, easy going and enthusiastic in everything they do. They are happy to be trained, given activities and played with. They are great to have around kids because of their love of activity. Their passion creates a great environment for families and all people. When given proper care and love they thrive and become excellent companions.

The breed typically lives to be between 10 and 14 years old. They do suffer from certain health problems like cataracts, cancer, entropion, thyroid problems, allergies, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Of course, any breed has health risks.

As long as you get your dog from a trustworthy breeder, problems should be minimal and can even be avoided entirely. A good breeder can show you certification from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (known as the OFA) and from the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (known as CERF), proving that your puppy’s parents were in good health, minimizing the chances of genetic health issues.

Great Britain has a system for making sure that dogs are healthy. There is a DNA database for all registered dogs, and all breeders are encouraged to do this. When you go and pick out a dog anywhere, you should always ask questions about the health of its parents and whether they are registered with the Kennel Club.

Overall, golden retrievers make great pets and companions. If you choose your dog well and invest wisely in its health, you can avoid the vast majority of problems and have a long and very healthy relationship with your dog. This can really be made very easy for you – see below.

The moment she broke up with me, all hell broke loose. I was devastated and became depressed.

I would beg and plead her to accept me back but she wouldn’t budge. She didn’t even return my calls.

But then I came across something very interesting.

And I put to use whatever I was told.

You know what? I got my ex back.

If I can get my ex back, so can you if you follow the instructions I’m going to give you.

With that said, here are three covert psychological tricks to make your ex jealous and want you back…

1. Write a hand written letter telling your ex that you’ve moved on and you feel that the breakup was the best thing for both of you.

This is important because it will put you in peace with your ex. Side with them before you can pull them back.

2. Reinvent Yourself. This involves getting yourself a makeover. If you have bad teeth, get it fixed. Get a cool new hair cut and buy some sexy new outfits.

3. Pamper yourself at the SPA or take a day off and do what you love with your friends. Have fun and do everything you can do to make yourself desirable to the opposite sex.

Just simple flirting will cause your ex to notice the sexual tension and will make them jealous.

5. Be friendly to your ex. Your letter will make them more receptive to your approaches. Befriend your ex and subtly flirt with your ex.

And at the same time, reveal your current relationship with the other person.

This will make your ex go crazy and feel jealous. This is the secret to make your ex feel jealous and want you back in seven days or less. The key is: Speed of Implementation. Implement what you learnt as fast as possible if you want results!

Interpreting A Pet Rat’s Bites

It will happen eventually; your pet rats will bite you. But most of the time, their reason for biting you is not because they want to eat you, or because they don’t like you, or whatever negative things that you interpret a bite to mean. No, most of the time, they are probably showing you some love and affection.

Lacking speech, rats communicate in different ways. Sometimes, they do so with their teeth. Since we are not covered in furs, rat bites can sometimes sting us. Bites vary in severity, and it is important for pet rat owners to distinguish what bites from rats mean. Most rat bites don’t break our skin. Some are just slight nips while some are a little harder. It is rare for a pet rat’s bite to penetrate human skin. When it does happen, often times, it is the owner’s fault.

Gentle nips can be interpreted as some sort of grooming. Yes, rats love to groom each other and if you keep them as pets then they will groom you too most probably because they like you. These nips can be considered as tokens of affection. Don’t pull away your hand when a rat is doing this. Usually, a pet rat scrapes its teeth on your skin to groom you. Other times, gentle nips can also be perceived as something that a rat does to test what kind of being you are and what you are made of, specially when it is still new in your care. It is because the rat is curious and not because it is hungry. There are times though when a pet rat might lick you and nip you because it wants to taste you. But this only happens when you’ve recently just handled some food and you didn’t wash your hands.

There are some moments as well that a rat is grumpy and is not really interested in playing. When you annoy it while it is feeling like this, be prepared for a harder nip. This kind of bite might be harder but it certainly is not that hard enough to break your skin. During moments such as these, just leave the rat alone and don’t disturb it. It will come to you when it’s ready to play and be petted, eventually.

Hard bites that don’t break the skin can also be interpreted as some sort of a game that rats like to play. Your pet rats might think it’s fun, but as these kinds of rat bites sting much more than gentle nips, you should probably try and devise a way to let them know that you don’t like these kinds of game. Don’t get angry with them, just find a solution to stop them from doing it. Do whatever works as long as they’ll learn that playing is good but hard nipping is definitely bad.

It is rare for a pet rat’s bite to draw blood. It does happen though, most probably because you startled or scared it so much its first reaction is to bite hard. Remember that rats are typically prey because of their size and so they startle easily. Don’t startle them.

Bites from pet rats are usually not that hard. Just remember that for a pet rat, a bite is some way of communication or a sign of affection. Don’t be scared because your rat bit you. It’s just showing you how much it likes you.

Two Facts About Malcolm X You Didn’t Know

There are two facts about Malcolm X that you didn’t know and it is disturbing to learn these facts.

The First Fact about Malcolm X

The Addiction and Prostitution of Laura

Laura was a young girl that befriended Malcolm when he first arrived in Boston to live with his sister Ella. She was a nice girl in high school that wanted to go on to college and study science or medicine.

She was an A student and was the only one that tried to talk Malcolm into going back to school after he told her he always wanted to become a lawyer.

Laura met Malcolm when he was working as a soda fountain clerk at the Townsend Drug Store that was located right across from where Laura lived with her grandmother.

Laura and Malcolm went to a dance one night and it was there that Malcolm met Sophia, a white girl that became Malcolm’s women and his accomplish in his robbery scheme later in life.

Laura, heartbroken over being jilted for another woman never came back to the drugstore again while in school.

But years later Laura runs into Malcolm again but this time Malcolm is a cold bloodied hustler that has a pimp friend named Sammy.

Malcolm and Sammy use a technique on Laura that Sammy has perfected that turns innocent girls into prostitution.

In the autobiography of Malcolm X he gives a graphic picture of what Laura becomes after they turn her out.

“Laura is in and out of Jail because of drugs sells herself to men to support her habit. Then hating the men that uses her she becomes a Lesbian. I blame myself for this and to have jilted her for a white woman makes this a double crime.

The second and most disturbing Fact about Malcolm X

After Malcolm becomes a minister for the Nation of Islam he never locates Laura and helps her through the Nations of Islam’s drug rehab program that was fast becoming nationally recognized as the best.

The Nation of Islam also was building a college specifically for people that specialize in science. Since Malcolm knew Laura wanted to go to college and study science it seems fair that Laura would be perfect for the Nation of Islam’s college program.

Yet not one time does Malcolm X ever mention trying to find and rescue Laura in his autobiography.

He does go out of his way to try to find two former hustlers that once tried to kill him, Sammy who later in the story tried to kill Malcolm over another woman was already dead before Malcolm was paroled and West Indian Archie who threatened to kill him over money was sick and living in a boarding house.

But no recorded attempt was ever made to rescue poor Laura the only person Alex Haley named a chapter after.

These are just two facts about Malcolm X that are hidden in history but they give good explanations how good kids like Laura with bright futures can go bad, even today.

Book Review, In the Neighborhood by Peter Lovenheim, Searching For Community One Sleepover at a Time

Peter Lovenheim lives in an affluent Rochester, New York suburb. In February 2000, a murder-suicide involving a physician couple occurred in a house on his street. Two children ran from the house after 10 pm shouting that their father had killed their mother. No one in the neighborhood knew the family well, which had lived there for seven years. Lovenheim was bewildered how a street of 36 homes lacked a sense of community. He desired to know the people whose houses he passed each day, beyond their professions or number of children. He wanted to know the depth of their experience and their essence. Lovenheim knew from childhood sleepovers and summer house exchanges that waking in their beds, fixing meals in their kitchen and walking their neighborhoods provided insight conversation alone could not do. His mission would require a sleepover. Some residents declined; and yet, many said yes. In The Neighborhood: The Search For Community on An American Street One Sleepover At A Time, is Lovenheim’s near-decade experience to embrace his neighborhood.

Eighty-one-year-old Lou was the first resident to honor Lovenheim’s request to sleep overnight. Lou, a retired surgeon, lost Edie, his wife of 52 years, five years ago and misses her dearly. They raised six children who now live throughout the U.S. Lou welcomes Lovenheim’s company, as his schnauzer, Heidi is his only companion. Lovenheim accompanies Lou to the local Y where he exercises. There, his regular workout buddies laud Lou’s arrival. He appreciates their acclaim, reminding him of his popularity during his surgeon days. Yet, when he returns home to an empty house, as Lou says, “My life is zero.”

Forty-something Patti, lives just doors down from Lou and they’re unconnected. Patti, a radiologist, diagnosed her own aggressive form of breast cancer. She abandoned medicine to undergo chemotherapy. Lovenheim befriends Patti, a divorced mother of two pre-teen daughters. She too accepts his sleepover request. Lovenheim witnesses her health decline over time and helps whenever he can.

Grace, nearly 90, had walked Lovenheim’s neighborhood almost everyday for forty years without acknowledgment. She lived in a nearby town but chose to exercise among the Rochester suburb’s beautiful surroundings. Residents named her “The Walker” from afar. Lovenheim approached Grace during one of her strolls and explained his book project. She invited him to her apartment where he learned her fascinating background. She once lived in New York City and was an accomplished pianist and harpist. Once while walking, she fell. She crawled across the street back to her car and drove herself to the emergency room. Lovenheim questions if a place where an elderly woman falls and is unattended to can fairly be called a “neighborhood.”

Married couple, Deb 32, and Doug, 42 represent the younger faces of Lovenheim’s street. Lovenheim spends the night and senses a more self-sufficient couple. Both are on the fast track in corporate America, childless, and trying to conceive. They’re active members of the local country club. Deb tells Lovenheim she once needed vanilla for cookies and made Dave drive in a snowstorm to buy some. Ideally, he thought, she should have been able to borrow some from him as her neighbor.

Lovenheim rides with Brian, the newspaper deliveryman at 4:00 am to experience his street from a different perspective. He also walks along Postman Ralph’s delivery truck (Postal regulations prevent vehicle passengers) as he does his daily route. Ralph chronicles helping residents, including recognizing the signs of stroke in a customer and calling for help. Lovenheim believes Ralph knows more about his neighbors than they do: “I began to realize that in some ways he was a better neighbor to us than we were to each other.”

Lovenheim validates his neighboring efforts by introducing Patti to Lou. Lou welcomes the opportunity to drive Patti to her doctor’s appointments; making him feel needed. Lovenheim borrows sidewalk salt from Deb; and she agrees to take Patti’s daughter to the skating rink as her health deteriorates. When Lovenheim’s romantic interest ends, he turns to Lou for comfort. They share breakfast almost daily for two weeks as Lovenheim readjusts. “That it would end up being me who would find shelter at a neighbor’s house is something that never occurred to me when I started my journey, yet there it was,” says Lovenheim.

Lovenheim deserves credit for taking on such an assertive project. He displayed immense patience as he befriended his neighbors for some time before requesting to sleepover. He faced rejections too by those weary of his intentions.

In an age of social media where we’re quick to boast 50,000+ Twitter “followers,” reading Lovenheim’s narrative poses the question: Do we in fact know our next door neighbor?

The Importance of Body-Mind-Soul Integrity for Healing

The soul is the inner healer. It takes on some of the world’s unresolved issues, befriends a body and starts to speak to it in order for healing to take place. Thus, the body becomes the soul’s best friend. The body then tries to talk to the mind (through pain and other symptoms). But the mind doesn’t always listen and therefore becomes the soul’s worst enemy. The mind usually gets too wrapped up in the ego and takes everything personally. It is over-identified with the body, with the “me”, and it is under the illusion that it is all about “me”. Look what “I” am going through! Poor “me”!

It almost never occurs to the mind that the less we personalize our experiences, the fewer problems we have and the happier we feel. The mind rarely understands that pain is universal and although inevitable, it is also healable – if only we depersonalized life and stopped creating suffering by playing the victims. We are not victims, we are instruments for healing. We just need to look at the bigger picture and recognize the part we play in a much bigger scheme. We need to understand that the pain I am trying to heal is your pain too, and their pain as well. In other words, pain is pain and it is one of the things that connect us, and is also one of the things that we are here to resolve for the greater good of the universe. So let’s not make a personalized victim story out of it. We are all in this together, and what I have is what you have and what we all have (it just occurs in different forms on the surface).

Understanding that my body’s pain is the soul’s call for healing something larger than me, something that goes beyond the body I usually over-identify with, is the first step to happiness and freedom. Indeed, pain is inevitable. But suffering is a direct result of the story the mind tells the world in order to claim self-importance. Hence, suffering is unnecessary and can be avoided altogether. We can’t always choose the music life plays for us, but we can choose how we dance to it. And the key to doing that is cultivating a flexible and open mind that is able to observe objectively and remain neutral to the messages it receives (from the soul through the body) instead of creating interpretations and stories about what is.

The soul (our inner healer) speaks directly to the body, and if the mind is tuned to the body it can hear the soul’s call for healing. Note though that tuning to our body means we are in the body but we are not the body itself (we extend beyond the body and we are connected to other bodies and everything else there is). So when the mind is tuned to the body, it is in touch with the individual as well as the universal, and it is correctly informed on what is needed for healing. This “tuning in” is akin to “quieting the mind” (i.e. dropping the story), and can be achieved through meditation, contemplation, introspection and prayer.

Of course, another way to tune into the body is to do BodyTalk – a therapy that aims at direct communication with the body in order to correctly interpret the soul’s call for healing. So if your mind can’t get quiet enough to hear what your body is saying, BodyTalk can help not only in deciphering your body’s messages but also in quieting the mind itself (so you become more and more capable of resolving future problems by yourself).

Last but not least, to alleviate pain, shift your focus outside of yourself onto someone else. We can’t always remain objective about our own stuff but we can usually do that while observing someone else’s situation. Therefore, listen to the advice you give to the others and then take it on for it is most likely going to serve you just as well. Remember, we are all in this together and apparent differences are only a function of a noisy, scattered and scared mind.

How to Tame a Lovebird

Lovebirds are beautiful creatures and amazing pets. They add beauty and charm to your home. Just the sight of these pretty birds is a refreshing experience. If you tame a Lovebird then the joy they bring into your life have a doubling effect. Lovebirds of any age can be tamed and trained. However, if you have hand reared baby Lovebirds then they are much more easier to tame than adults.

Decide how many Lovebirds you want to tame and start with a single bird at a time. Taming a Lovebird requires its undivided attention. A pair of Lovebirds will socialize with each other and the process becomes more difficult for you. A single bird will consider a human as his companion and will learn the process much quickly and easily and the training becomes a fun experience for your bird.

Taming a Lovebird requires a lot of patience, time and practice for your bird. A tamed Lovebird is well worth the time you spend on taming. The best time to start training is as early as possible. The training should be divided into three to five sessions of no more than ten to fifteen minutes each. The training sessions should be conducted almost daily.

Take your Lovebird into a separate room where there is minimum distractions from external sources. Close all open windows and doors so that your bird may not fly away. Now take the Lovebird out of its cage and talk to him in a low voice. Words like “Good parrot” etc., etc. have a soothing effect on your bird and help to calm him down and get him prepared for training. Do not yell or shout at him.

Establish a trustworthy relationship with your bird. Fearful birds are difficult to tame. Once your bird is comfortable in your presence, put your hand inside his cage with a food item in your hand. Do not make sudden movements that may scare your bird. Do this several times until your Lovebird becomes familiar with your hand and starts eating food from your hand.

The next step is to teach him to step up on your finger. For this, bring your finger near the Lovebird and gently touch him on his chest. The bird will go out of balance and in order to balance himself he will step up and sit on your finger. Now bring him out of its cage and speak a few encouraging words and offer him a treat for complying with the required behavior. Repeat the process several times.

When your Lovebird has learned to sit on your finger, take him into his cage and teach him to step down on its perch. With repetition your bird will easily step up and step down as many times you want. Patience is required to teach these steps. Some birds learn very quickly while others learn a little later depending on the age of your bird. Practice this again and again until it becomes its second nature.

Now teach him to fly to your hand from a distance. Take the food item in your hand and utter the familiar word or whistle. When your Lovebird flies to your hand give him the treat and speak the encouraging words. Practice this step as many times until your bird learns this step fully and flies to your hand instantly. With practice and patience you will finally have a precious hand tamed Lovebird.
