Why Background Checks Are Becoming Common

Are you looking for the best employees for your office? Are you sure that the person you are with has a decent background? People today want to make sure that they stay out of tricky situations and therefore they always want to go one step ahead to find out more information about the people they are dealing with. The crime rate all over the world has gone up and therefore trusting another person blindly can become the worst mistake of your life. Hence, people are always depending on services and options that would provide them with some information they can rely on.

Criminal background investigations are becoming common these days because people don’t really rely on what they see. Many big offices and companies earlier preferred to hire a recruitment consultant that would provide better employees for their office, but now they prefer to hire a background check agency that would help them to find out more information about the potential candidates that would soon join the company. This is because there are many recent events where employees from multinational companies were found to be hired based on the fake documents provided by the employees. Employers now want to prevent such events happening to them and therefore they would always like to take some preventive measures to curb such events.

On the other hand, background investigations can also be useful to people who want to find out more information for the people they are dealing with. Hence, business people can always find out more about their clients before they sign any agreement that would trap them in a tricky situation. People who prefer dating online also make use of background checks because they want to know if the person chatting on the other end is genuine or an internet spammer.

The trend for background investigations is gradually increasing as people are using the option in several different ways. People who normally find their groom and bride on matrimonial sites also make use of background checks to make sure that the person they are going to settle with is genuine and does not have any criminal records or any other cases of violence or abusive behavior. Some people who don’t want to spend money on background check agencies prefer to go to online background investigation websites and get more information about the people they are dealing with. In the future it is estimated that background checks will become more frequent and people would use them for various purposes.

Young Adult Book Obsessions: All of These Books Are Becoming Movies!

Everyone knows the popular young adult fantasy book series, Twilight. We all are probably familiar with the author of that series as well: Stephenie Meyer. However, do you all know about another book she wrote called The Host? The host isn’t a fantasy novel, it’s more science fiction, at least in my book. There’s no magic, or paranormal; it’s about aliens and take over. Still, it’s definitely a book that I can get behind with my romantic side as well. This novel by Stephenie Meyer is clever, and although uses an idea that we have all read about before, uses a twist the is extremely unique and engaging.

I’ll admit, when I first started reading the novel, it took me about 30-40 pages before I was hooked. Those first 30-40 pages took me a few weeks and several times of sitting down before I got through them. I didn’t find myself engaged until after those first pages. Once there, I couldn’t put the book down. Now, my attention span is short, so don’t blame the book, but give credit where due: the rest of the book is so engaging that even my short attention span wasn’t an issue.

Now the host is going to be made a movie here pretty quickly. Let’s talk about bang for your buck Stephenie Meyer! One book and one series later, she’s got 4 movies and 2 more on the way. Gold mine. There’s something about Stephenie Meyer’s books that truly appeal to our hearts. One thing I will say, she’s not the best writer of all time. Well neither am I. But she has a fantastic way of appealing to our psyche, or our inner dreams, or fantasies–let’s face it, girl’s got something.

The movie will probably be a low rating, and should be, as I see. The Host is completely appropriate for all ages and truly is a young adult science fiction novel. I’m excited to see the tornado of young adult fantasy and science fiction novels become movies both in the last few years and coming up. It shows the fascination of my age group (and younger) and of both male and female in getting away from the real world for a minute and just enjoying something fantastic, or nerdy.

Unfortunately we have to wait almost a full year for the movie to release, the expected date is March of 2013, before we are able to see the creative story unfold on the big screen. However, we all feel, the wait will definitely be worth it!

How to Be an Advocate for Your Child Without Becoming Overly Pushy

Finding the perfect balance between being an advocate and being overly pushy and demanding can be a difficult task for parents of children with special needs. Here are some tips to make it a little easier.

1. Be honest about your child’s skills and needs. If you go into a team meeting demanding that your child who is non-ambulatory be the star in the next dance recital you may not get where you really want to be. In the same light, if they are finally starting to use their words and they are never asked to use them in class it might be a good time to speak up.

2. Be polite. It sounds simple, but can be extremely difficult when you feel your child is getting the shaft. Sometimes making a less direct statement (I feel that… It seems…) can come across as less confrontational and help you get the answers you are looking for.

3. Communicate. While you may feel you are being clear in your needs for your child it may not be interpreted as such on the other side. Checking in, following up, and chatting with people other than when you need something or have an issue can really make a big difference.

4. Say you’re sorry. A heartfelt apology can go a long way in advocacy when you’ve crossed the line into jerkiness. The people working with your child know you love them and get that you want the best. Letting them know that you’re aware of your own intensity can really help smooth things over (donuts can help too).

5. Be ready to compromise. Many professionals would give your child the sun, the moon, and the stars if they could afford it. Unfortunately, many are working with an incredibly shrinking budget. Know your priorities going in and be willing to give up some things which are less important. Being willing to give a little on your end shows that you are a team player and can help them work within their own restrictions.

6. Stay focused. This can also be stated to keep your eye on the prize. It is easy to become distracted by every little issue along the way. This doesn’t mean you should ignore other concerns, but if you want more physical therapy push for that. Don’t get bogged down by so many goals that your true objective gets lost in the mix.

7. Be helpful. Continue to work with your child at home. Some people get so wrapped up in the advocacy that they forget the day-to-day work that needs to happen as well. Showing that you are fully engaged and walking the walk as well as talking the talk can really make an impact on others.

8. Give others the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes what we hear is not truly what people are saying. Professionals do their best to state the issues and concerns as they see them in the best and most accessible terminology possible. Sometimes they are not the words a parent wants to hear. It doesn’t mean that the professional is out to “get” their child. It may mean that they don’t have all of the information, have a bigger plan that they aren’t expressing well, or are just having a day where they can’t say things in a way that fully makes sense to you.

9. Ask questions. Sometimes phrasing your concern in the form of a question takes the edge off of what you really want to say. Saying “I don’t think you have the right vision for my child” can be interpreted as aggressive but saying “can you tell me where you see this plan going over the next five years” can help clarify what others are saying without coming across as mean.

10. Say thank you. Nothing makes people want to continue to work with you than a genuine thank you at the end of the day. A little note to thank someone for listening to your concerns, a word in passing for someone who took an extra step, or a letter to a supervisor can really mean a lot to the people working with your child. It doesn’t need to be huge. Even if you didn’t get everything you were hoping for, letting folks know you appreciate their efforts can earn “points” for the next issue. It shows that you are a team player and that you understand how much others are working toward the goals you have.

The balance between advocate and something stronger can be very difficult. Being assertive but not aggressive can make others aware of your goals and objectives without putting them on the defensive and resistant to working as a team. In the end, it makes things even better for your child (and in turn, for you)!

Becoming Your Best Self – Using Your Fridge to Release the Past

Have you looked in your refrigerator lately? What do you find there? Leftovers from yesterday that are still appetizing? Or bits and pieces of meals you’ve eaten at some indeterminate time in the past? Do you save food that isn’t enough for a meal for one, thinking you can incorporate it into some future gourmet creation? Is your fridge stocked with glowing, healthy, nutritious and appetizing food? Or fruits, vegetables and other food well past its prime?

You might think this is a strange topic, but I think there is a relationship between what’s in our refrigerators and how we filter past experiences. In order to truly look forward to the future, we need a clean starting point, and that point is now. In order to truly live in the ‘now’, we need to be free of past beliefs, past hurts, past situations. If we are hanging on to old hurts, or to negative beliefs about ourselves because of past situations, it is very difficult to put all of our energy into creating life as we want it to be.

So, when you look in your refrigerator, if everything you see isn’t vital and fresh, it’s very possible that you’re hanging on to old stuff in your consciousness as well. The problem is that, like the bit of cheese that gets lost way in the back and when you find it you have trouble remembering it was cheese, these memories go deeper and deeper. The deeper they go, the more likely they are to influence your life today, and the harder it is to remember that that’s why you do what you do.

It’s a lot easier to clean out your refrigerator than to clean out these old hurts. But it is possible. Here is a 4-step strategy to release yourself from these limiting memories. Doing any one of these steps will go a long way towards liberating you from the past. I’ve also included a 5th method, a shortcut for those of you who, like me, prefer doing things the easy way!

Identify the areas of your life where you do things that are designed to protect you.
Some examples of this might be not trying something new (so you won’t fail), not initiating communication with others (so you won’t be rejected), having trouble trusting people for a long time (because they might hurt you in some way), not committing to a relationship (because they might leave you). You may need to think about this for a while. Because we don’t like to think of ourselves as living defensively, we usually come up with other reasons for our behavior. Seeing the connection between the what and the ‘true’ why may take some time.

Remember when you first felt that way.
Once you make the connection between a behavior and ‘true’ why, try to remember the first time you felt the fear behind the why. For example, your fear of failing might be linked to something that happened in the 3rd grade, when you put a lot of energy into something and someone, the teacher, perhaps, belittled your efforts and embarrassed you in front of the class. It would be very difficult to continue trying after that. In my experience, most people, when asked this question, usually have a ready answer. When asked why they’re afraid to fail, the memory of that teacher usually pops right up. The trick is to ask the question.

Rewrite your history.
Let the strong (perhaps adult) you rewrite this event and release the negative emotions around it. Visualize the situation, but this time have the person act in a loving, nurturing way, the way you would act if you were that person and in that situation. [This is very likely the way you do act. Our past experience tends to make us extremely sensitive when we see situations that resemble a negative memory. We tend to go out of our way to make sure that others aren’t encumbered with the same negative beliefs.] If you find it hard to reframe the memory, then visualize it as it happened, but this time you (the strong you) step in and comfort the you (often the child you) it happened to. Say all the things you wish someone had said to you right away. Remember, you are not trying to change the past as much as changing your reaction to it.

Release the old energy.
Very often, rewriting your history is enough to let go of the negative memory that is limiting you today. You may, however, need a little more work to be completely free. Sometimes it is good to finish this exercise by writing a letter to the person involved. In this example, it would be to your 3rd grade teacher. Just start with Dear Mrs. Pringle, and let yourself be free to write everything you’re feeling. This is usually a mix of emotions, but don’t forget to include a thank you. Part of who you are today is because of this situation. It may have made you more caring and more sensitive, so be sure to include that as well. The important thing is to include all your feelings. When you’ve written all there is, BURN the letter. Release the entire episode into the universe. Remember that this is about you and not about the other person. You may choose to share the experience with them after you burn the letter. If they are still a part of your life, you may want (or feel a need) to do that. But, whether you do or not (and you don’t need to for this to be effective), you will notice a change in your interactions with them the next time you see them. You’ll be free.

Shortcut Step: Clean out your fridge!
Let’s end where we started. Double the effectiveness of cleaning out your refrigerator. With each item that you toss, create the intention of releasing old beliefs, situations or people. With each item, say something like “As I release this old food, I release all old hurts and negative beliefs. I am free.” As you play with this, the phrase that will have the most meaning and effectiveness for you will evolve. Use it every time you throw something out and notice how your life starts changing.

Have A Life BEFORE Becoming A Wife

Women, ever wonder why you are having so many issues in your relationship? Ever wondered why you can’t find a good husband? Yes, we know that some of the best men are either married or gay. However, contrary to popular opinion, there are good men out there and yes, they are single AND available. So how do you go about attracting those men short of going to a “Seeking Men for Jesus” gathering? How do you go about getting a man to work on himself to become the kind of husband you desire? You do that by beginning to work on becoming complete within Yourself INSTEAD of seeking someone to complete You.

Are you ready to be a wife? Do you have your own life with your own thing going on or are you seeking a man to fill your life and give you purpose? If a man is the only thing you have going on in your life, then when you begin to have problems those problems will flatline you. You won’t have anything else going on in your life to sustain you. Having a man, having an intimate relationship should only be one part of your life, not the entirety of your life. That is why so many women lose their minds when their partner cheats or has an affair.

It is so very important to have your OWN life BEFORE sharing that life with someone else. Before you be a wife to a man, make sure you are wife material. Would you marry the woman looking back at you in the mirror? That is NOT referring to your sexy, well-shaped body or your bedroom skills NOR your cooking skills. Are you emotionally mature? Are you working on your self-growth and personal development?

You cannot expect to marry someone, who is the perfect husband, but you are not the perfect wife. You cannot expect to marry someone, who is faithful, not running around with lots of women, who is NOT ready to settle down, who is NOT emotionally ready, if you are just as emotionally immature, which means you are extremely jealous, possessive, insecure, have low self-esteem, lack confidence, no identity, no sense of self, but you expect a man to have lots of money to look after you financially. Do you have your own money?

Do for Yourself FIRST what you would like a man to do for you. Take yourself out on a date with Yourself. Travel the world on Your dime. Buy yourself nice things. Work your own money have your own money. Be able to afford your own life. Do you have your own mutual funds that you are investing in? No, this is not referring to a 401K.

Of course, it is NOT a must to have investments. This is just a checklist for the things you can do and have for yourself. NOR does this mean that you should be materialistic and be constantly buying things just to have and impress. This is about having your own life BEFORE becoming a man’s wife. That way you can BE your own woman with or without a husband. That way if a man is causing you unnecessary pain and drama, you can kick his ass out of your life and house while telling him “don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!!

Set the standard for Your life VERY high so you don’t attract low-hanging fruit from the apple tree. BE at the TOP of the apple tree so that the man you seek will either be at the top already or is willing to grow himself to be the kind of man he needs to be in order to climb to the top of the apple tree to be with You! So, are you ready to BE a wife?

Beta Male Transformation – Becoming an Alpha Male Simplified

You might have already observed in everyday life that women tend to be more attracted to alpha-male types. These types are often characterized by confident, popular men who dominate social interactions. They also know what they want in life very well and strive to get it regularly. Well, what separates beta males from alpha males? Well here are some tips that you can use in your life and start behaving more like a true alpha male.

The first tip is to start acting more confident. This means being more confident in yours, and in your actions. You cannot doubt yourself, your opinion or your decisions. When you act confident, the women you are with feel the same way that you do. This confidence comes from the fact that you know your purpose very well, and that you are secure and comfortable with yourself and the way you are. Another tip is to be relaxed everywhere you go. Girls feel what you feel. If you feel tense or nervous around a girl, then she will likely feel more awkward as well. But if you are relaxed, and have relaxed and open body language, then the girl will mirror your position and feel the same thing inside as well.

Of course being relaxed has numerous other advantages such as that it allows you to be more smooth and carry conversation with ease. Of course being funny is another great characteristic that women love in men. The type of humour that you want to use with women is that type of cocky and funny humour. The type of humour which demonstrates the high esteem in which you carry yourself, and also makes the girl laugh.

Family Legacy Is Becoming Real to Me Now

As my years advance towards age seventy, I am now taking the word LEGACY, to heart. What I think is most important is not money or land or stuff but the fact that I did try to reconnect with my wife and daughters and grandkids. I admit to being reclusive, a bit of a hermit. I am constantly looking for ways to break out of this prison I create for myself.

When my wife and I travel, we reconnect. We went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and it set a great pattern for us later on. Decades later we always look forward to ‘getting out of town’ and escaping the urban frenzy. Sometimes this is just a short one hour roadtrip and sometimes it is to the tropics. It’s all good!

Then there are the three daughters to reconnect with. We are all close, but in different ways. One daughter plays guitar. I have always played guitar so this is a great way to reconnect if we have grown a bit distant. My grandaughter, that is her daughter, has now learned to play guitar so there now is a good feeling of legacy that warms my heart.

Another daughter loves to talk about rock bands like U2 and Led Zeppelin. This how we reconnect. Just lately, we took her to an amazing concert starring Paul Simon and Sting. This was on her birthday and we could tell she was really into the music!

Our oldest daughter also loves music, but more like Abba and Supertramp. I love these bands too! My grandson, her son, plays electric guitar. Cool! This daughter loves to eat fish and chips with her old dad, on occasion. This is a very yummy way to reconnect, if you ask me.

If I let myself become a hermit, then I will turn into a hermit crab. This is what my inner child is wisely saying. I am trying to heed this warning and break out of my shell. Maybe soon I’ll try some social media or just stick to writing articles. It is all helping me to emerge as a person. It also helps that I walking a lot on sunny days and playing a lot of guitar and mandolin. If I permit myself, I might even attempt fiddle or string bass. I am on a roll!

Even thinking about RECONNECTING is having positive effects on my psyche. I will move forward with this new positive attitude, seize the moment, and continue to write article after article!

The Steps To Becoming A Master Seducer

When it comes to getting with a lot more women, you’ll need to know the art of seduction. Now, there are a lot of men that think that they know this, but chances are they don’t. Most men just focus on the “short” game. They look for a phone number, a date, and then try to score. That’s not what this is about. If you are going to get further along than most, you’re going to need to focus on steps to becoming a master seducer. There are several things that you can do to start this quest, and if you’re truly going to follow steps to becoming a master seducer, you’ll need to be ready to go for things a little longer than most.

You Need To Step Up Your “Game”

Before you start on the steps to becoming a master seducer, you need to be absolutely flawless in your schedule. This means that you should span your 24 hours out, and know exactly what you are going to be doing at all times. If you can control your time, you will be able to control other aspects of your life. Make sure that you work on yourself, clean, cook, groom, and work out. You have to be a well-versed individual, because that’s how you’re going to need to approach becoming a seducer. You cannot seduce anyone if you don’t have control over your own time, simple as that.

Listen To The Cues That Women Give You

Everyday women talk in public, and they talk about all sorts of things. They even tell others what they are looking for in a man, and what smells, tastes, and other elements that drive them wild. You need to focus on listening and taking note of these things. When you hear these things, take a mental note, and then adapt to it. When a woman tells someone that their favorite sent is “sandalwood” for instance, you have to adapt. Subtly slip that into your lifestyle, and you’ll find that she’ll be drawn to you out of the blue. Focus on these little things and your steps to becoming a master seducer will be easier to manage.

Don’t Push Sex

Seduction is not about sex. You have to throw this notion out. Women today are getting pushed for sex more than ever before, and it’s rare to find a man that doesn’t want it. You have to balance yourself into a position where you want sex, but you aren’t going to push or force. You need to actually walk away from the initial encounter. If you can do this, she’ll want it more, and you’ll be right where you want to be in regards to the steps to becoming a master seducer

5 Secrets to Becoming A Guest On Top TV Talk Shows

We can easily forgive a child for being afraid of the dark, but the real tragedy in life is when adults are afraid of the light. – Plato

IMAGINE you were sleeping wearily on your bed, your mind gazing shrilly on a dream you’d once had years ago while still growing up as a child – the dream of becoming a media guru, a top show TV presenter in one of the popular media outfits.

But as it is now, maybe twenty years or so after, all that dream, all that hope and aspiration now seems to be a mirage of a lonely desert, totally unreachable, far-fetched and out of sight!

So in grinding defeat, you buried your face in your hands like a wretched demon on a graveyard, yawned and wasted your thoughts in your spacious, elegantly or perhaps not-so-elegantly decorated Renaissance bedroom!

A bedroom lacking decoration, a bedroom where there were no twenty-seven-years-old paintings or artworks hanging anywhere in sight. It was plain, dark walls steering at you with sizeable evidence of your failure.

In fact, it was as if you were living in the now-Hades-of-your-dream!

So you heaved heavily over the tragic death of the dream of ever becoming a media celebrity, perhaps in one of these popular media outlets like CNN, BBC, Voice of America, you name it!

Worse of, maybe you are even a graduate of Mass Communication, or of Literature-In-English in one of the world-acclaimed institutions but you are not having it funny.

Or maybe like me, you have little or no degree of any higher institution whatsoever that, perhaps, might grant you the interview of a well definable, humblest job!

Whatever be the case, you staggered fuzzily through the vault of your mind and thought of what life would look like if you were a media celebrity, a perfect picture of what you’d long envisioned since Adam such as…

A masterpiece of opulence and Jacuzzis, living in a crisp environment where the air is clean and invigorating, in an architectural bullet-building overlooking the White House with exquisite furniture, Australian wines, Brazilian champagnes and more like that of Oprah Winfrey, Larry King etc.

But as it is now, your lifestyle, if compared with these top TV personality make yours seems pretty much like a giant cathedral of poverty and hunger.

You are far off from “living the life of the rich and the arrived.”

The hope of having the material good of life, of amassing enough money to buy the car of your choice, of living in an apartment of your choosing and starting a business of your own seems to be drenched.

Yes, totally drenched!

But then suddenly, having given up on your dream of becoming a media personality, and while you were musing over your predicament, of how tough life could be after many years of working your fingers to the sun, the phone rings…

Becoming More Creative

Creativity is something that can be learned – developed. The creative minds of the age got that way through tenacity and spirit – the spirit of innovation in thought.

The late Steve Jobs, creator of Apple, and one of the most prodigious innovators the world has ever seen, probably wasn’t always that way – he was a kid at school, just like you or me – goofing around a bit in between learning.

But what separated him from the rest of us was that he found something he loved, found it and stuck to it, until he and his co-inventor/innovator founded Apple computers – Mackintosh – i-pod – all the stuff that has changed our world beyond recognition.

How did he do it? Well, for a start, he probably came to develop skills out of five primary principles.

These five primary principles are:

Seek Novelty

Seeking the new in life doesn’t mean you have to throw out the old; it means being open to ideas about your life, instead of being closed up. Being that way is often akin to being frightened of the new. Live every day as if it were your last, and one day it will be! Up until then though, do not be afraid of change; meeting change and adapting successfully to it is extremely beneficial for your psyche. The converse is true: shying away from the new means being retiring and retired at the same time. If you are like this, and most of us are to some degree, you tell yourself little stories to justify not doing anything, don’t you? We all do it, it’s got something to do with the human condition, but that isn’t set in concrete; our species is the most adaptable one on the planet, or rather say that we change the world to adapt to us – not the same thing at all! On an individual level though, seeking out new approaches to life, new ways to get things done – new ways to get to work (you have to start somewhere, and where and when better than at the start of your day?

Challenge Yourself

This could take the form of challenging yourself physically – by walking at a fast pace for two hours, for example, or it could take the form of challenging yourself mentally. Perhaps the most difficult way you can challenge yourself mentally is to question all your preconceived notions about everything you do, about everybody you know; about all your opinions – challenging yourself in this way can and should be life-changing.

Getting physically fitter will have immediate benefits – you won’t feel as tired, or as stressed, you’ll sleep better and wake refreshed.

Becoming mentally replenished, so to speak, means that you will become more optimistic about your life – a change from habitually being in that other state – what Churchill called ‘the black dog’ – depression!

Changing the ways in which you have come to habitually view the world and everything and everybody in it will have direct and great advantages: you will be actively sought out as good company; people will come to rely on your judgment; will come to depend upon your good common sense approach to life, rather than the ‘stick-in-the-mud’ way used to think.

Doing all this will make you think more deeply about the things that affect you, even about the things that don’t – it is usually these last things about which your thoughts and opinions are most entrenched – it’s our way of coping with diversity in the world – of making it go away, of putting it in a cupboard and forgetting about it, to which I say that living life this way is like living as if you weren’t alive at all – a form of sleep walking, if you prefer not to be so gloomy.

Think Creatively

This is probably easier than it sounds. The traditional thing to say by people who don’t think they are creative or think they can be, is that creative people are born and not made – stuff and nonsense! Creative people are the way they are because they have worked at becoming more creative. If you think creatively, you are creative. The question is, how do you begin; well, you can make a start by doing simple mental exercises – by asking yourself questions beginning with the words – ‘What if… ” What if I went a different way to work? What if I tackled my work as if I wanted to show someone else how I do it? What if I were the Head of my department – what would I recommend? Start simple at first, but once you begin to view the world like this, you’ll have difficulty stopping doing so – you’ll be creative.

There are lots of other, equally effective ways of thinking creatively.

Start today and enrich your life while making yourself into the kind of person you never imagined you could ever become.

Do Things The Hard Way

Too often, we take the short cut, the easy way, we avoid any kind of difficulty in our lives. My question here is this: Do we benefit from doing things this way; from taking the easy way? Our muscles stiffen through inactivity; our brains atrophy – deteriorate – and we grow unaccustomed to doing things that present us with challenges. If we take life head-on, so to speak, and don’t blanch at difficulty but defeat it, we become stronger, fitter, more mentally alert – more creative.

Here’s my daily dose of creating difficulty for myself – it doesn’t take long, but it improves me. Driving to and from work every day, I try to drive as if I’m taking my driving test again: stopping at white lines, keeping to my lane, observing the speed limit, being considerate to other road users (not the easiest thing to do), and generally driving in an exemplary way and driving correctly – not endangering myself or anyone else on the road. Now this may sound fairly simple; but it actually isn’t; it’s difficult and requires some thought – continual thought, actually, rather than me driving on what I can ‘automatic pilot’ – doing things more or less without doing too much thinking.

How does this help me? Well, for a start, it makes my drive in and out much more enjoyable – it tests my driving knowledge and my ability to manipulate my way through Al Ain, and it tests me mentally; imagining there is a sharp-eyed driving instructor sitting next to me as I drive tunes up my thoughts and makes me feel sharper than I otherwise would.

Try it and see; do NOT take the easy way, the ‘lazy way’ of driving, but observe all the rules of the road – written or not, and then tell me you didn’t find the experience enjoyable – tell me your driving hasn’t improved dramatically because of it – and this is all before you begin the serious business of the day – your business! Tell me that once you begin to take on minor challenges like the one I’ve just outlined, that it doesn’t make you more self-confident, happier, more aware of what is around you!

Network

Meeting people is always a nice thing to do – meeting old friends or making new ones is always worthwhile – it’s what makes us human – feel part of something bigger than our own ego. Networking is a way of spreading ideas, getting new ideas, making a name for yourself, finding others with similar interests and passions; it’s a way of moving in circles that do not just revolve around you. New friends have their friends, who may very well become your friends soon, or not.

The point is that you are moving out of your ‘comfort zone’ by introducing yourself to others; this is what is stimulating about doing it. You find yourself overcoming your own shyness at meeting strangers; becoming more outgoing, listening more to what others have to say rather than chirruping your usual blurb. You are becoming human, you are becoming a functioning part of something bigger – your community. We all belong to so many of those: the community at home and the one at work; the one at the coffee shop, and the one after the conference you just took part in. Networking tells others where you are – where you stand – what you like, and what you don’t – it locates you, and in so doing, it allows you to learn something invaluable – how to become someone people want to talk to – and that’s always very worthwhile, isn’t it?
