Book Summary: Becoming Your Own Banker – Unlock the Infinite Banking Concept – By R Nelson Nash

This book is not about getting rich quick. It talks about emulating the entities that contain all the wealth – “Banks”. This is a big deal because you can leverage tax deferred growth, pay interest to yourself, leverage tax write-offs and see the power of compounded growth over time. This strategy is very powerful and is how the rich preserve wealth through the generations. I am a big believer in Financial Education and this book will help you in that endeavor. As always, I am not a financial planner and always recommend you do your own research. This summary is designed to help you with that research.

Why is this important to me?

This may not be important to you but in my opinion, it should be. Most people work their asses off to make money and then do nothing to preserve it and build upon it. Remember that your financial goal should be to have your money work 10 times harder than you. I know this is an easy statement to make but it requires diligence and education.

Money flow is a key concept. It is either flowing toward you or away from you – there is no standing still. This is why they call money – “currency”. Remember that if you pay cash for a car then you lose the earning potential of that money. Likewise, if you finance it then you pay interest to the bank. In both scenarios, the money flows away from you.

Infinite banking will show you how to eliminate this problem.

This book is broken down into 5 parts. I will touch on each part and drill into the most important aspects of the Infinite banking Concept.

1. Becoming your own banker – The problem with not doing this concept is the “volume of interest” paid by people to buy stuff. Most people focus on the interest rate without truly thinking about the volume of interest paid. Here is a quick example: Let’s suppose you were going to buy a house for $200,000 at 6% interest over 30 years. You end up paying $431,677. So basically the house costs you double. If you look at the rule of 72’s then your money should double every 7 years then this is not a bad tradeoff. Here is the killer. Let’s suppose you sell the house 10 years in, you will still owe over $167,000. Guess what – the banks know this.

On average you can calculate for the average person that about 30% of every dollar goes to interest in some form or another. Thus you need to focus on the “Volume of Interest” and not the Interest rate. Think about this – what if you could have purchased that house with your “savings” and paid yourself the interest instead of the bank?

2. Dividend paying life insurance – Let me caution some of you who listen to Dave Ramsey. His stuff is excellent and he hates whole life insurance as an investment. I disagree with him and can show you why. This book will touch on that. There are some real secrets with this device as an investment strategy. They include: tax free growth, instant access to the money, law suit exempt & the money stays in the policy. This is the real secret. When you take a policy loan, you still receive your dividend. Thus it is like your investment is still growing and you can write off the policy interest on your taxes. Everybody focuses on rate of return using investment vehicles but you need to look at all the pieces that make up the pie and I can tell you nothing beats this concept. Why do you think Warren Buffet loves insurance companies and insurance vehicles for his investments?

Capital Buildup – Just like any business, you have to build it before it starts making money. You need to do the same thing with Insurance to have the Banking concept work. If you think of a Grocery store, you have to rent the space, hire the people, stock the shelves, advertise and work the business. It takes time before the business starts spitting off money and you have a ton of risk. With the insurance vehicle as the funding component for the Bank of YOU, you have to build it for at least 4 years. Once you hit the 4 year mark, then you can start using the money to buy things and pay yourself the interest.

Human Behavior – For the Bank of You concept to work, you need to make sure you pay yourself the payments just as you would a bank. If you don’t then it is like stealing. You really need to cement this concept into your head for this to work. You would not pillage your grocery store so don’t pillage the insurance policy.

Compound Growth – For sake of time, I won’t go over all the numbers but Insurance as a vehicle investment blows every other type of investment like 401K, 529 plans, CD’s, mutual funds and other restrictive types out of the water. Most financial planners will disagree with this because they don’t understand ALL the benefits of the insurance – not to mention that they may not be able to sell it to you…….. The compounded growth tax free really becomes strong in the mid to late years. When you pay yourself back the interest and the principle then the policies values grow even faster. The true hook here is that you are now saving the 34.5 cents out of every dollar in interest because you are paying it to yourself. This interest then grows tax free in the policy. One huge advantage is that you get the loan money from the policy delivered to your door and it is not taxable. This is that way because it is a loan to you. When you look at other investment vehicles, you are encouraged to put the money away and hope it will be there. You have to follow guidelines on when you can access the money. If you do it too early then you have to pay penalties. I don’t know about you but I don’t want people telling me what I can and cannot do with my money.

I just touched on the important factors in this great book. I can tell you that you can even put this strategy to work on steroids when you buy other investments that spit off cash flow. In the examples in the book, Nelson talks about buying cars and shows the power over time when you pay yourself the interest. Now consider if you buy a small business that is making money. You setup to pay for the business with a good interest rate to pay yourself back and NOW the payments come from OPM (other people’s money). I can tell you that the tax advantages and the growth potential of this strategy are unbelievable. I have done this both with purchasing other businesses and with purchasing cash flow real-estate. This really helps when you pay yourself back because you make interest income and you can charge yourself more interest.

Remember that interest income to YOU is taxed less than ordinary income. This is a huge magnifier when taken into account over time. You get to grow more money faster this way.

I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days.

One thing you can take away from this book is to GET EDUCATED. The concepts in this book are excellent and I recommend you study them. If it makes sense for you then find qualified advisers to help you build wealth.

Why Is Node JS Becoming Popular Among Online Retailers?

Today, most of the retailers, who earlier had only e-commerce websites for their customers to shop online using a PC or a laptop, are now going mobile, as the industry has seen a surge in the mobile shoppers. Busy customers always look at quickly finishing off their shopping, in just few minutes’ time. When they have to shop on mobile; the loading time needs to very less. This is where Node JS plays a vital role to keep up with the pace of the customers. This smart technology makes the app ten times faster than other technologies, by decreasing the load time to a large extent.

On one hand, if the website becomes fast with less load time, the technology is also the best fit for e-retailers, who are running the same application across multiple devices. Node JS can build data intensive apps that can run seamlessly across multiple devices in real-time by displaying the content in a hastily consistent manner.

Node JS makes development process a cake walk. There are several modules in this for an instant use. No wonder smart developers prefer to adopt this technology for development today, as it does not need them to build application from the scratch. This has helped developers in decreasing the time for development and retailers in getting the app in the shortest duration of time.

Adopting Node JS has significantly increased the productivity as the applications are written in JavaScript. Thus, front end developers can easily understand how and where to make required changes in the application and this is saving a lot of their time. Retailers can quickly get the app enhanced with all the required features integrated. Also, the app can provide the best customer experience.

No matter how good the design of the e-commerce mobile app is or how robust the development of the e-commerce website is, SEO is what is of utmost importance to any e-commerce business, for their website to get ranked high on the Google search result page, to catch the attention of the customers by appearing on the first page and among top ten. Node JS can easily help keep this traffic without increasing the load time. For example, Walmart, one of the leading e-retailers is using Node JS and they were able to get 500 million page views on Black Friday without any hassles.

Node JS reduces the page loading time to more than half. Busy customers, who want to finish off shopping in minutes, expect a page to load in maximum five seconds’ time and this urgency can be fulfilled easily.

Node JS supports agile development. The app can be easily modified for new requirements without much effort, while other traditional technologies are rigid and this makes it very difficult when a new feature or an enhancement has to be made. The main feature of agile development is developing the app in installments. The technology gives this flexibility to developers, where they can break the entire application into several groups. So, when a change is needed in a particular group, it can be easily made without disturbing the entire application.

Owing to all these flexibilities and the scalability that Node JS is offering to developers, no wonder the technology is occupying a significant place in the field of e-commerce web development and retail industry, fetching all the attention of e-commerce developers and retailers today.

Becoming More Connected With the Ocean Can Enhance Your Psychic Ability – It Worked for Me

I have a very special attraction to the sea and I learned so much more about this connection when I went to Sinai and swam with dolphins in the wild. I took up snorkeling and it wasn’t long before I was hooked.

There is something surreal about feeling free to swim around and take in the world below. I got to know the coral reefs and which fish hung around which parts. I learned to trust the sea and I totally relaxed and took in the experience.

When the dolphins appeared I was mesmerized and as I swam above them I felt a kind of psychic bond. All thoughts went out of my mind and it was like I was sleep walking. I followed the dolphins every twist and turn and just enjoyed the feeling of ‘being there’.

I had been visiting Sinai for a period of 5 years and it all happened from the moment I turned 40. I would go out to Sinai have a fantastic time and then come home and re pack and be off again as if I was being drawn back there.

It was while I was in Sinai that I did a lot of meditation and enjoyed the power of now. I had an apartment with a balcony overlooking the sea and it was quite an awesome experience. I was on my own on this holiday and yet I didn’t feel alone. I felt very connected and part of something and that feeling has been with me ever since then.

I found that my own psychic ability was a lot sharper when I came home. I felt revived and there was certainly a shift in my being and other people could see that glow in my face. There is something about water that really resonates with me and it certainly lifts my spirits.

I joined the local spa when I came back and really soaked up the experience. Then I came across these Oceanic Tarot Cards and I found that I had the most fantastic connection to these cards.

The readings take me back to the ocean where I can connect with the major arcana featuring mermaids. The minor arcana shows the sea creatures such as turtles, sea horses, fish and the like.

It is the dolphins that really resonate with me and they represent the cups. The cups represent the emotions and I can read these cards as I would any tarot cards. There is something extra though because of the connection to the ocean.

I am able to see in to these cards with quite a lot of depth and it is as if those dolphins I once swam with are now connecting with me through these cards. These cards give me exceptional readings and my clients find them fascinating.

Barley Varietals Are Becoming More Definable in Flavor and Chemistry!

The flavor of beer has many elements – barley, hops, and yeast. Some in the malting industry lament that barley has not received its due when it comes to imparting beer flavors. Hops has been the center of conversation over the past few years.

Whatever your perspective, beer is about agronomics – same with wine. More than terroir, agronomics is inclusive of farming practices — fertilizing, grain density, irrigation, climate, and fungicides. Same can be said about wine grapes. Nonetheless, growing cereal barley for malting is more than simply putting seed in the ground, watering, and hoping mother nature cooperates.

Like most historical aspects of the U.S. beer industry, it was the European immigrants who made it happen, primarily those who came from Germany. Brewers like Anheuser-Busch, Ruhstaller, and Coors have European roots. Hop farmers were also immigrants who settled in New York, California, and the Northwest. Barley in the U.S. has a long immigrant involved history. In the late 1800’s Sacramento, with a large German immigrant population, was a major barley and hops growing region and, at the time, was home to the largest brewer West of the Mississippi River.

Because mass production brewers own their barley production and malting operations, many local private maltsters cater to Craft Brewers, who are true “crafters” of quality beers – Samuel Adams, Alaska Brewing, Firestone Walker, Stone Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Maine Brewing Co., etc.

Some private maltsters are large operations such as Rahr Malting, which is privately owned and have been malting since 1847. Like many old timers’ William Rahr was a German immigrant. Over the last decade many producers have been acquired by other international entities. About a year ago Cargill agreed to sell their malting operation to Axéréal of France.

In conversations with malting companies it is apparent the business requires a lot of capital. It is a fact that malting companies must cater to the small brew pubs and even the homebrewers as that is where larger micro brewers get started making their own flavors of beer.

It’s All About Innovation Through Chemistry

Innovative craft beer flavors are not simply the act of mixing: malts, water, adding hops and yeast and voilà, you have your craft beer. As a consumer of craft beer, it might be fun to understand how we get to the place called “Voilà”. In the end, craft beer is about interesting flavors and aromas, and we know that barley is the ‘soul’ of craft beer.

Barley is the premier cereal grain for making malts for beer because of its attributes in the brewing process, although wheat and corn are sometimes used. For example

  • The character of barley husk adds to the filtering process in making wort.
  • Barley malt enzymes do a great job converting starches in the grain into sugars.
  • It is easier for barley to germinate, which is required to turn barley grain into malts; far more manageable than other grains such as wheat, rye, or oats.
  • Barley malts add flavor, color, and mouthfeel to the beer.
  • Malted barley can be grown with lower protein content, which makes for clear beer.

Without malting there are no sugars to be derived from the barley. It is easy to get confused about barley and malts and other grains that might be malted. Suffice to say, most any germinated grain can make beer. Even a gluten-free beer using sunflower seeds.

Of the four ingredients in beer that is some form contributor to flavor, water should not be overlooked. Water plays a crucial role in some styles, specific to regions such as Dublin, Ireland. Also, many English beer attribute their flavors to their own well water. Beers using water higher in pH (alkalinity) would typically be darker as the darker grain’s lower pH of the water. Yeast does not function well in a high alkaline solution, so historically brewers compensated by devising ways to manipulate the water that was really a local supply issue.

Barley – Beyond the Basics

Consistency is critical to all things craft beer. Consistency is of paramount importance in establishing brand, it is all about maintaining quality throughout the process – from research, to seed production, harvest, storage, and finally to malting practices. Brew masters want vendor partners helping them meet product quality.

As an aside, beer is produced throughout the year and barley is harvested once a year. If barley is generally a crop that is planted in spring and harvested in late summer, how do craft brewers ensure they have malts throughout the year? Short answer: Grain is stored in elevators for as long as 12-14 months, then malted as demand dictates. That warehousing process is a highly sophisticated and an expensive operation that most consumers never think about.

Obviously, the primary ingredient to start making beer is barley malt. (Not to slight the importance of hops or yeast for now.) Over the past few years hops has held a prominent position when discussing flavors and aromas in U.S. craft beer. That may be partially attributed to successful marketing campaigns that brand patented hop varietals. Barley is understood by brewers for inherent compounds levels such as enzymes, sugars and malting profiles and proteins. Most barley for brewers is based upon specs dictated by brewers and contracts with farmers that conform to those specs; a barley specified by varietal name is just not recognized as important. Nonetheless, there are 37 patented varietals of barley certified today.

“Brewers purchase malts based on specifications of the varietal barley used and on quality standards in malting process. The maltster understands the array of varieties and what malt process they must employ to achieve the dictated specifications from the brewer,” says Dr. Jamie Sherman, Director-Barley Breeding Program, Montana State University.

“Currently, they (farmers and brewers) don’t see a value in promoting the fact they use branded specific barley varietals. A few craft brewers are now sourcing malts based upon region of origin but don’t see a value in a specific variety. That means some maltsters are using only regionally sourced barley. That is dictated by a brewers marketing decision. One of the things several seed breeders are working on is to provide some value-add with a variety e.g. a specific flavor profile as hops does. So far, this goal is still in the research stage. We are malting varieties with different inherent chemical profiles to see if we can give a variety specific flavor,” said Dr. Sherman.

Flavors-Malting is About Sugars, Flavors, Color and Character!

It is not unusual for a brew-master to contact a malting company with an idea for a new recipe. After much consulting, a selection of base malts and specialty malts are recommended and then tested. The refinements to the recipe will be made. The brewer may have specified color, mouthfeel, aroma, abv, sensory profile, etc. The final decision might be made that a new variety of barley is required.

Flavors introduced into beer via malts are extremely complicated. There are more than 600 different compounds in malts. “The chemical structure of barley malts has a lot to do with types of barley, region where barley is grown and brewing process. For sure yeast, malts and hops all interact together throughout the brewing process to produce flavors,” said Dr. Sherman.

Malting is a process converting starches into sugars. No sugars, no beer.

Malts are a process of getting the barley to start germinating. The process starts by soaking the barley seed in water, and when seeds start to sprout the maltster initiates a process of heating and drying the grain to stop the sprouting process. That is what creates the release of enzymes in the grain to breakdown the starches into sugars and for the yeast to turn into alcohol. This is the major purpose in mashing the grain malt — getting sugars out of the grain.

Any malt used, base or specialty, the process is a blend to get flavors, color, and character.

Stick with me, we are still on flavor.

Here is another perspective on what barley brings to the flavor table. Dr. Patrick Hayes, Crop & Soil Science Dept., Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR is a leading researcher on attributes of barley relative to flavors. Hayes says, “If the question is: Does barley add to the flavor of beer? The answer must be yes and that alone validates all the research being done on new breeding programs for barley malts.” Here are some of the findings from the 2017 study on barley and beer flavors reported on by Dr. Hayes.

  • It is not surprising that barley variety contributions to beer flavor has not been a high research priority. However, certain varieties are acknowledged by some brewers to have notable flavor attributes.
  • Terroir impact remains elusive in the beer industry; only recently has the term appeared with reference to cereal grains. Barley has two markets-Cereal (human consumption) and Feed (animal related).
  • Data confirms genotypes (genetic make-up) of barely has a significant effect on beer flavor and sensory descriptors (how flavors are described).
  • Barley variety contributes to beer flavor.
  • Climate, soil types, irrigation, nutrients, pest control and farming management practices contribute to barley flavors.
  • Genetic markers do prove barley contributions to beer flavor.
  • Variety contributions to beer flavor develop during malting.

Here is the most profound quote from Dr. Hayes study on beer flavors: “In certain beer styles and for some maltsters, brewers, and consumers, the barley contribution to beer flavor will be worth pursuing.”

What Price-Flavor?

Hand-selected malts and hops in the hands of good brewers can make a unique and memorable quality beer. And therefore, crafted beers’ distinctiveness should not be expected to compete on price either. Quality does come with a price, as Gucci said, “quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten”.

Ron Silberstein of Admiral Maltings in Alameda, California comments about the cost of flavor quality in craft beer, “From the outset, Admiral understood that we couldn’t compete with ‘commodity’ barley malt on price. A batch of 7 percent abv beer from a 15-barrel system with 1,000 pounds of malt will cost about 13 to 15 cents more per pint,” Silberstein says.

“Hops are the spice of beer and it does wonderful things, but it’s not the heart and soul of beer. No malt, no beer,” says Silberstein. “But the barley grower is now starting to understand that through special breeding programs. Barley is starting to lose its ‘commodity grain’ heritage. New varieties of barley designed for each growing region bring forward special flavors and some are produced with an ‘organically grown’ moniker. They bring forth uniquely defined chemical compounds and are being recognized as hybrid’s not commodities. These come with significant higher flavors than a commodity grains,” according to Limagrain Cereal Seed company, a worldwide producer of various cereal seeds.

Maybe in the future, consumers will be more aware of barley malt varietals that are used to make their beer and definable flavors from varietal barley grains.

How Big Is the Footprint of Barley/Malts?

Note: The U.S. is the world’s 10th largest producer of barley; Russia and Germany are the two largest.

The largest brewers such as In-Bev and Molson/Coors have their own patented varietals and their own malting facilities. By definition, a craft brewery produces less than 6 million barrels per year and is not controlled by a major brewer. Crafters are the people that contract barley production and set the specifications for the malts they buy.

In July 2020 AMBA (American Malting Barley Association) reported 2019 barley production (feed and cereal types) to total 169,806,000 bushels. The largest producers were Idaho- 54 million bushels; Montana-43 million bushels; and N. Dakota-32 million bushels. Interestingly, malts and malt houses for crafters tend to be regional. In essence, close to where the barley grain is produced and malted. This gives a lot of beer regional styles, flavors, and aromas because each growing region uses barley bred for a regional growing terroir/agronomics. Of all barley harvested in 2020 approximately 50% is for malting.

Barley Malts Breeding Research-It Is All About Chemistry

As has been repeated several times, malts are the soul of a beer and are finally getting their due. I recently heard one brewer state that “malt is the new hops,” says Chris Swersey, Brewers Assoc. “Craft brewers as a group cherish the flavors that arise from diverse malts.” What helped bring hops to the forefront are distinct flavors and aromas and some mouthfeel issues.”

Like hops, there are trade groups, universities and private entities that are focused on quality and breeding new barley malt seed. The certifying organization for quality is the American Malting Barley Association. They ensure that their certification of barley used for malting is of a guaranteed quality. Currently the AMBA (American Malting Barley Association) has researched and establishes quality standards on approximately varietals of barley used for malted beverages. There are probably 100 barley varietals produced in the U.S., according to Scott Heisel-VP at the AMBA.

In recent research to identify beer flavors –“The Flavor Project” — Effects of Barley Variety and Growing Environment on Beer Flavor— they used selected varieties of barley malts in a highly controlled study. Here are some descriptors participants identified in flavor tests: cereal, floral, fruity, grassy, honey, bready, malty, toast, toffee, chocolate, sweet, etc… Of the three varietals used in the test, defined flavors varied by variety and location. The study noted, “… flavor is usually ascribed to the malt rather than to the variety.” However, without the compounds in barley, malting is unable to deliver flavors.

What are some of the issue’s barley research is focused upon?

  • Impact of higher yield varietals on flavor
  • Structure of the plant itself — for example taller stalks of grain
  • Agronomic characteristics – climate adaptability
  • Protein content – levels of proteins breed into the plant
  • Color
  • Disease resistance by growing region
  • Drought tolerant
  • Two Row versus Six Row –Two Row varieties are most common barley varietal and offer plumper kernels, lower protein malts and lower husk content. But there is still a place for Six Row barley malts.
  • Spike structure – Where the grain sits
  • Regulating maturity of the crop – winter/spring barley
  • Moisture content – Lower is better
  • Types of sugars released in the wort
  • Higher malt extract
  • Lower wort viscosity

The Case for Flavor in Beer

Research is increasing our understanding of flavor attributes in malt which are opening up new horizons for new varietals. Research trends are showing the impact ‘base malts’ and specialty malts have on flavor and in turn flavors have on brand identification.

After talking with many maltsters of various sizes and regions it does seem there is a trend toward explaining and describing flavor profiles of their malts.

Manual Credit Card Imprinters Becoming Obsolete

Since the introduction of credit cards in the 1960’s, the cards have carried the card number, expiration date and cardholder name in embossed or raised letters on the plastic card surface.  Mechanical devices were developed and used to imprint credit card charge slips from those raised alphanumerics.  Those slips were then, for many years, deposited into the merchant’s bank account like checks to prove the transaction took place. More recently, the cards were affixed with a magnetic stripe and were swiped through electronic devices that read and transmit the card information to processing centers for verification and sale authorization.

Electronic processing has now become so standardized that last year Visa announced they were going to phase out the embossing of card information on the card surface and future cards will be “flat”, the card information printed but only accessible magnetically with the stripe on the back.   Other card associations – MasterCard and the rest-will follow suit shortly.

Few merchants still manually take imprints of cards anymore, with the exception of merchants accepting card payments for delivery of goods or services ordered by telephone – such as a pizza restaurant, for example.  They do so to verify that the physical card has been presented to the merchant during the transaction, in order to prevent fraudulent charge backs.

In my own wallet I have an ePassporte Visa Electron card and the numbers are flat.  No imprint can be taken.

And no imprint any longer needs to be taken.  The new standard is to always swipe the card through a terminal, whether that terminal be in the store, next to or part of the cash register or point of sale system, or via use of a wireless terminal a driver carries with themselves to the customer for payment at time of delivery.

If your business takes orders by telephone or mail and you are manually keying credit card numbers into your terminal, you are costing yourself a lot of money in additional card processing fees.  Manually keyed-in transactions are processed as “non-qualified” transactions at a rate more than double your basic rate, due to risk of fraud by the card not being physically present.

The fact is, card imprints are no longer a safeguard against fraud, because any criminal can create phony credit cards and use an Addressograph machine to emboss stolen credit card numbers onto them.  Encoding a magnetic stripe on the back, however, is almost impossible to counterfeit.  The stripe contains not only the card number but other coding which, when swiped through a terminal, verifies to the bank that the actual card is present and being swiped, not manually keyed in.

What can a merchant do?

Short of purchasing some sort of portable photocopier to copy the customer’s card and perhaps I.D., the only thing to do is to catch up with 21st century technology and equip your drivers or delivery personnel with wireless credit card terminals.  The terminals may be purchased or leased from your credit card processor and they pay for themselves quickly, because now all transactions they process will be under a lower  rate, as card-present transactions.

These terminals include a printer so you can get a signed receipt from the customer after the transaction is put through and authorized, and you print a second receipt copy for the customer.  Just as if the customer had been physically in your store.

I have equipped many mobile merchants with these devices: food delivery, locksmiths, massage therapists, computer technicians, handymen, plumbers and other repair personnel – the list is growing every day as more businesses go mobile and deliver their goods and services to customers.  The terminals are also great for fairs, shows, conventions and other locales with no landline telephone access available.

Discover the Benefits of Becoming a VoIP Reseller

Nowadays, VoIP solutions have resolutely established by residents. The need for quality and fully featured VoIP hardware is increasing with every passing day. Most of us are looking for opportunities to operate a home-based business. One among these business opportunities is becoming a VoIP reseller. Yoga Teacher Training – Your Way Towards Becoming a Skilled Instructor

Yoga teacher training programs are for skilled yoga teachers, those people driven to become instructors, and serious students aiming to go deeper in the practice. The whole world today is actually in the middle of amazing, quicker transformation. There are gems from the past that might help us but we need a technique that is certainly entirely appropriate to the present. Yoga could be far more than a remarkably valuable number of esoteric physical routines. It is an ancient and growing science as well as art of life. It is a science that entails certain skills and practices. It must often be utilized artistically and sensitively in reaction to the subtleties of the moment. The art of Yoga includes almost all life and asserts the significance of bringing about a much deeper understanding of oneself – entire body, mind and spirit. Yoga strives to maneuver a person out of boring, mechanical living into an exhilarating adventure of existing and understanding.

These courses are extremely thorough and have absolutely high standards. Most have opportunity that includes Pranayama, deep breathing, yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology, chanting and spiritual practices, Asana and Vinyasa. A few centers educate Purna. Purna Yoga represents an all-natural method of yoga integrating not just the physical postures but also philosophy, meditation, breath control and the yoga private and interpersonal code of life values. Other people offer a complete Yoga teacher training course with yoga exercise teacher accreditation. This program educates a non-dogmatic synthesis of classical and present-day methods drawn from the top major systems today.

In addition, they educate the best way to teach as well as set up modules, the aim of each asana and hands-on corrections. A few are non-profit institutions whose purpose is to multiply the teachings of yoga exercises and vedanta as a means of obtaining physical, psychological and spiritual well-being and self-realization. Their course is a powerful, personalized experience, based on the ancient gurukula teaching technique, integrating the student’s daily life into the yoga training. A perfect training center is committed to the continuous professional growth and development of its employees and student instructors. It should really aim to stay in touch with former graduates by using regular updates, training manual revisions, annual courses, and also by offering continuous useful teaching feel. Key Steps To Becoming an Advanced Negotiator

The study of power and its effect is important in the understanding of negotiation and relationships (or common ground) flowing from any negotiation. Every interaction and every social relationship, in side and outside organizations, involves an exercise of power.

INTERPERSONAL POWER:

French and Raven suggested five interpersonal bases of power that are important to negotiators.

  1. Legitimate power
  2. Reward power
  3. Coercive power
  4. Expert power
  5. Referent power

We will examine only Expert Power and Referent Power in this article, but should you wish to learn more about Legitimate Power read the article entitled “The Use of Power in Negotiations” on http://www.ezine.com. To learn about Coercive Power and Reward Power read the article entitled “Release your Power in Negotiations” on ezine.com

EXPERT POWER

A person who possesses expertise that is highly valued has expert power. Experts have power even when their rank is low. An individual may possess expertise on technical, administrative, or personal matters. The more difficult it is to replace the expert; the greater is the degree of expert power that he or she possesses. Expert power is sometimes referred to as information power and is often a personal characteristic. For example:

A secretary who has a relatively low-level organisational position may have high expert power because he or she knows the details of operating the business – where everything is or how to handle difficult situations.

According to Lewicki et al. (1985:249), men and nations will act rationally when all other possibilities have been exhausted. Within the context of negotiation, expert power is the most common form of power in use. Expert power refers to the persuasive, influential nature of the information itself. It refers to the accumulation and presentation of information that will change the other’s point of view on an issue.

Lewicki et al. are of the opinion that expert power is a special form of information power. Information power can be used by anyone who has studied and prepared his position for negotiation. Expert power, according to this author, is accorded to those who are seen as having mastered and organized a great wealth of information.

Lewicki et al. are of the opinion that there are methods by which a negotiator can establish him or herself as an expert in the eyes of the other party:

  • By citing facts and figures.
  • By ‘name dropping’.
  • By citing examples of detailed experiences gained in well-known institutions.
  • By being known through the press or through other people, or through writing articles in well-known journals (by being visible).

Presentation of information:

Within the context of negotiation, information power is at the heart of expert power. Even in the simplest negotiation, the way that information is presented could make a large impact on the outcome. In the light of this it can be seen that visual aids like charts, graphs and good statistics have a substantial impact on a negotiation. Market research on other prices in the area, on consumer’s opinions and on financial position and the interest of suppliers is important information to gather when preparing oneself. Care should be taken that this information is trustworthy, since if it is proved to be untrue this could damage the trust built through negotiation in a serious way.

Information power is often used in a distributive way so that information is manipulated to control the options open to the other party. For example, the other’s choice of behaviour is influenced by sending him positive information about the option we want him to choose, or by concealing information about an option we don’t want him to choose.

In some cases experts are brought into negotiations since people are less likely to argue with a perceived expert in the area of his expertise. To really take on the challenge, the non-expert would probably have to consult with another expert, which is costly, time consuming and somewhat risky. The lack of confidence of the non-expert is often quite visible in his body language, posture and manner speaking.

Countering good information:

Countering information power can be a real problem. When information or an expert is brought in to counter the other side’s information, it can lead to an escalation in conflict with either a negative result of no resolution of the conflict and hence agreement; or a positive result which leads to a search for other alternatives which could be beneficial to the negotiation process. So the best approach would be to:

  • Explore all the information at hand
  • See an expert for what he is. All experts have abilities in a certain field, but seldom over the whole field covered by the negotiation.
  • Either specify or generalize depending on the posturing of the opposition. For example, if the opponent comes with very specific information, an effective counter would be to return with very general information.

REFERENT POWER

It is common to identify with and be influenced by a person because of his personality or behavioural style. The charisma of that person forms the basis of referent power. A person with charisma is admired because of his or her personality. The strength of a person’s charisma is an indication of his or her referent power. Charisma is a term used to describe the magnetic personalities of some politicians, entertainers and sports figures. Some managers are also regarded by their subordinates as extremely charismatic.

Referent power is sometimes referred to as personal power. Referent (or personal) power is based on the target’s attraction to the power holder – liking, perceived similarity, admiration, desire to be close to or friendly with the power holder. This attraction may be based on physical attractiveness, dress, mannerisms, lifestyle or position, but can also include friendliness, congeniality, honesty, integrity and so on.

Truly charismatic people – those who have a unique blend of physical characteristics, speech, mannerisms and self-confidence- are able to influence very large groups of people by their actions. Referent power is based on the need of an individual to identify with people of influence or attractiveness. The more the target admires or identifies with an individual, the more referent influence the power holder has and the more control he can exert because of this identification. This form of power is often regarded as one of the strongest in negotiation.

In international negotiations governments realise the importance of sending professional negotiators or individuals with special qualities of referent power to negotiate on their behalf. If personal power is abused by any side it can lead to tremendous distrust between the parties involved. Personal power is seldom associated with destructive tactics of any form, because individuals with an abundance o personal power will often try to find those agreements that could befit both sides as not to leave any victims in their wake and thus lose their source of attractiveness.

The personal integrity of an individual in the opponent’s team could be a very strong from of common ground in negotiations. Many negotiators fall back on the integrity of the parties and the relationships built up between individuals as the strongest bond that exists between negotiating parties. The very existence of this bond will encourage them to find solutions for any conflict that may occur.

Becoming Your Best Self – Basket of Wisdom For Personal Growth

As I reflect back on my last 10 years of coaching experience, I can see the similarities in both problems and solutions when individuals are striving to become their best self and live in wholeness. Accepting the following bits of wisdom can create significant change in your life!

  • Attitude of Gratitude
  • A key attribute of people who live their best life is gratitude. They are grateful for all the good in their lives (people, things, experiences) as well as for the opportunity to learn valuable life lessons when negative or uncomfortable situations arise.
  • 3 Minute Miracle
  • This is a tool that I use all the time, both personally and with all my clients. BREATHE! This doesn’t mean the unconscious sort of breathing we spend most of our day doing, but a very focused awareness of the process of breathing. And it’s simple! Just pay attention to the physical act of breathing. Notice how it feels as you take in air, allowing it to fill your lungs and spread throughout your body. Hold it as long as you can, maintaining focus on the physical act. Then exhale, loud and slow. (I usually ask clients to make sure I hear them exhale over the phone). Do this 3 times, each time doing it slower. At the end, you will be clear and focused, in your “center of wisdom”. Now is the time to ask questions like “What’s the most important thing to do right now?”
  • Don’t take it personally
  • In my opinion, Don Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements is one of the most brilliant guidelines for being your best self. Especially, the agreement to not take anything personally. “Nothing others do is because of you. what others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.”
  • Fundamental Human Needs
  • In the early days, I used an assessment created by Thomas Leonard to determine what unfulfilled needs a person had. Over and over again, it came down to feeling accepted, valued and/or acknowledged. We need to know that we count. Hearing it from others is nice, but we also need to hear it from ourselves. In fact, I would recommend acknowledging yourself (and others) first, and then let the acknowledgement be mirrored back to you.
  • Ministry of Presence
  • Some time ago, I attended a funeral where the priest spoke about “the ministry of presence”. He encouraged each of us to be truly present in every moment and with each person we come in contact with. Give them the gift of your 100% attention. This is especially important with family members as this total attention on your part is vital to their emotional wellbeing (see last item!). By the way, as quality is usually more important than quantity, you’ll probably find (as many of my clients do) that when you give the important people in your life 100% attention, they will ask it of you less frequently, as they find they don’t need constant “proof” of your affection.
  • Give what you want to Receive
  • When there is something we want from others (emotional or physical, not items), the absolute best way to get it is to start giving it to others. The more you give it, the more you will feel it yourself, and the more people will start giving it back. Incredibly simple, but very effective!
  • Get that you deserve what you want
  • No matter what you want, you DESERVE to have it! It’s just a fact. So many of us feel the need to be punished for something (often something trivial that no one else remembers) and therefore feel that joy is out of their reach. A vital belief to being your best self is “I’m good enough just the way I am”.
  • Take ownership and reject victimhood
  • It is human nature to want to escape accountability, so it’s so easy to blame others for everything in your life. However, ‘eternal’ victims do NOT become their best self or live their life in wholeness. In order to claim the power to change your life, you MUST accept responsibility for everything in it today. All of those ‘people’ are just helping you learn a valuable life lesson. However, accepting responsibility for what happened does NOT change their accountability. Taking ownership doesn’t let them off the hook; it frees YOU!
  • Keep improving 1% a day to Wholeness
  • So often, we try to change too much and become overwhelmed at the prospect, leading us to not change at all! The best antidote to this is to focus on slight improvements each day. While it’s important to identify a ‘SMART’ ultimate goal, we can’t focus on that everyday. Turn that big goal into mini ones. For example, if you want to exercise 30 minutes 3 days a week, do it in small percentages at a time. 1% of 30 minutes is.3 minutes, but 3 minutes is 10%. So, the first week, exercise 3 minutes for 3 days. The second week, double that to 6 minutes. Keep your focus on increasing that amount of time and before you know it, you are at your goal!
  • Focus on Being Best Self
  • Being is more important than Doing or Having. That is so simple and elegant, I don’t think I can add to it!
  • Self Talk shapes our lives
  • The constant chatter in our minds shapes our lives more than all other experiences and events put together. It’s not the teacher who made fun of us, but the daily reminder of it that makes us vulnerable and protective. It shuts us down…. or lifts us up! That is why it is so important to break those negative thoughts, changing them at least to neutral thoughts if you can’t get to happy ones right away.
  • Beliefs CAN be changed
  • All of our beliefs are learned. That is good news because it means they can be changed. There is no off/on switch, however. The process of changing a belief is just that, a process, something you must choose and commit to. (If you’re interested in finding out more about this, please consider a complimentary session, your free test drive).
  • All emotional response means SOMETHING
  • When we have any emotional response to a person, thing, experience, event, movie, book, anything at all, there is a reason for that response on our part. While we may not need to pick apart the happy or joyful responses, there is always value in looking at why you shut down, get angry, want to cry, or feel any uncomfortable feeling, particularly when other people are not responding to the stimulus in the same way.
  • Being our best self takes courage and strength
  • In order to achieve wholeness in our lives, we need to accept that we have the courage to face the worst and the strength to expect and allow the best. Sometimes our fear of the “worst” happening will paralyze us so much that we don’t even know what the worst is! Acknowledging what the worst is (and identifying a few ways we might deal with it if it did happen), allows us to move past the fear. Once we’ve moved past the fear, we then need to work on expecting and allowing the best. For some, this is even more frightening than facing the worst.
