How to Order Food in French – Be Like a Local

When I first moved to Montreal, my mailbox would frequently receive fliers for various restaurants and delivery options. I felt that I got quite a few more of these living in Montreal than I had ever previously received living elsewhere. But in those early days I had a genuine fear of calling those places because there was no guarantee that the person on the phone would speak English, and I had no idea how to phrase my delivery requests in French. Over time of course this changed and I learned how to order food in French, with stuttering and eventually smooth speech I figured it out. Below is my guide on how to order food in French with ease. Bon Apetit!

Ordering on the Phone:

“Bonjour je veux commander livraison” = Hello I would like to order delivery.

“Je veux prendre une pizza toute garnie avec du coke s’il vous plaît.” – I want to order an all dressed pizza with coke please.

“Quelles sont vos promos?” – What are your specials?

Words to use:

livraison = delivery

je veux prendre= I want to take

Je ne veux pas = I do not want

avec = with

When ordering use the above phrases and then read the menu to fill in the blanks. So when you say “Je veux prendre” add an item on the menu to complete the sentence. so: “Oui madame, “je veux prendre + une salade avec les saumon fumée s’il vous plaît.” If you do not know how to say something and you wish for some help say: “Comment dit on _________ en français.” = How do you say ______________ in French?
