Have you heard a lot about whey protein and how it is being used by almost everyone and the gym but don’t know why?
First, it is important to understand that there are different types of whey protein. Whey Protein Isolate contains the highest concentration of protein at 90-95%. Other protein types only contain 25-89%. Whey protein isolate also contains the smallest amount of lactose making it the best choice for anyone who is, or may be lactose intolerant.
So what is Whey-Protein? Whey is left over when milk coagulates, and contains everything that is soluble from milk. Whey protein is the collection of globular proteins isolated from whey, a by-product of cheese manufactured from cow’s milk.
A growing number of studies has found whey may potentially reduce cancer rates, combat HIV, improve immunity, reduce stress and lower cortisol, increase brain serotonin levels, improve liver function in those suffering from certain forms of hepatitis, reduce blood pressure, and improve performance.
It is also a high content carrier of branched chain amino acids. These are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAA’s are valuable to athletes because they metabolize in the muscle instead of the liver speeding up muscle growth and recovery.
Whey also contains Glutamine. A non-essential amino acid that can be created by the body but, is depleted by resistance training. Glutamine is released by the muscles during training and used as energy. If this is not replenished muscles will begin to dehydrate and enter a catabolic state.
So taking protein is an efficient way to replenish the nutrients and amino acids your body needs following training.
