We all know how important is a pet in our lives. A pet can totally change ones life from sadness and problems to love and joy. Keeping goldfish is not different from keeping cats or dogs, but it is a little bit harder because there is an important factor, water.
You do not have to worry about water quality for dogs as much as for goldfish. Goldfish live in water, it can get very toxic in a short period of time and cause a lot of problems for your pet. So keeping fish as pets requires a bit more care than any other pets. You have to accept that before you decide goldfish is the pet you want.
Before you buy a goldfish there are a few things to keep in mind. Goldfish are very very dirty pets. They look very small and cute but they produce a lot of waste. To have a happy and healthy goldfish and to help you keep a high quality water more easily you need to buy a large tank. A 15 gallon tank for one goldfish seems to be the perfect size. They can grow up to 10-12 inches and live up to 10 years.
Keeping goldfish in a pond is a great idea. Setting up a pond will require a bit of time and some money from your part, but you will be satisfied when you see the end result. Few people are capable of building a pond for their goldfish and tanking care of it.
You must also forget the idea of a goldfish in a bowl. With bowls there is little or no filtration and a bad gas exchange. No matter how often you do water changes, there will be some kind of toxicity in the water.
If you want to buy a goldfish for your 6 years old child, do not let him/her take care of it. Even if they are good willing, there is too much responsibility. Goldfish care must be taken seriously.
Keeping goldfish is a lot of fun. It is your decision if you really want to care for these wonderful, cute, playful and very social pets. You will not regret it.
