Age is a state of mind. You are as old as you feel. Starting to sound familiar? Most people find those claims hard to swallow. Aging is real and it can be a huge pain in the neck if you let it. What if I told you there are some very easy ways to slow down the aging process. You can feel like you are getting younger as you get older. All it takes is a few smart choices, some discipline, and a bit of work. So to think and feel younger than you are, follow these tips.
- Exercise often. Regular exercise will help you build stronger muscles. The new muscles help support your entire body and take pressure off of your joints and bones. Exercise will also help you have more energy throughout the day by training your body to burn calories as energy instead of storing them as fat. So you will have more energy, you will feel stronger, and you will move more easily and pain free, which sounds like a win, win, win situation.
- Get more sleep. This is an almost instant way to help you feel younger, better, or more energized. Sleep is the only chance your body has to restore itself. It is also the only true break your brain gets all day. Getting the right amount of sleep can help you feel better on several different levels,so make an effort to get your beauty rest. The best and easiest way to do this is get to bed earlier. If you aren’t willing to miss your favorite show, then maybe it’s time you invest in TIVO or DVR because I guarantee that sleep is worth it.
- Load up on the healthy stuff. Load up your plate with the healthy stuff. If you can, eat your fruits and veggies first with a big glass of water. This helps you eat less of the not-so-healthy foods and helps you get more of the nutrients you need. Your body uses all the nutrients to help it run efficiently, and the better your body runs the younger you will feel.
- Do things differently. Changing up your routine will keep your brain and your body guessing. We are creatures of habit, but the occasional change or switch is good for us physically and mentally. Keeping you on your toes means that your body is guessing and your brain is thinking about things it’s not used to thinking about. If you ever just don’t want to start your day, try starting it with something different and you will be pleasantly surprised at how exciting and energizing it can be.
- Revisit your old favorites. Think back to a time when you felt happy, energized, and young. Think about your favorite music, movies and activities during that time and then bring them back. Download some of your favorite bands that you haven’t listened to in years and enjoy them on the way to work or at the gym. Rent a couple of your favorite movies on a rainy day and put them in while you are getting some things done around the house. Sometimes all it takes is a mental spark to get you feeling young again.
- Take up a new hobby. Learning something new can help you get out of the funk of doing the same things day after day. Pick up the instrument you never learned to play or set a day to take lessons for kayaking, surfing, rock climbing or anything else you can think of. While learning an active hobby can help stimulate your mind and body, it is still beneficial to learn something that is mostly mental. If you aren’t really interested in any of the physical activities try learning or reviving your interest in a strategic game like chess. The mental challenge will help your brain fire some of those neurons that have been sitting dormant.
- Think, eat, and breathe positive. Nothing drains you more than negative stress. Bad things happen and there is no way to avoid that, but you can move on sooner than later. Spend twice as much time thinking about the good stuff than you do thinking about the bad. Shaving the stress will shave off years from your mental age, and that’s what really matters.
Remember these tips, and age won’t even be something you think about anymore. Remember you are as old as you feel, and as far as you and I are concerned you don’t have to age another day. In fact, why not just get younger?
