The Sounds of Hummingbirds

Believe it or not, hummingbirds do have songs-well, sort of. They don’t have a large enough voice box to create vocalizations like other birds. But they do communicate very efficiently nonetheless. My Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds use squeaks, twitters, ‘chitters’ and whirrs in different ways.

Research now confirms the unthinkable. My returning hummingbirds have flown non-stop, over more than 600 miles of water in the Gulf of Mexico in hopes of finding nectar sources when they finally reach land! And if that isn’t enough, they continue their migration northward to end up in my yard, and points north as far as Canada. This is why I so appreciate the stamina and sheer fortitude of this tiny flying jewel.

When my hummingbirds first arrive in May and find a full nectar feeder in the same spot as last year, they actually fly very close to my face at eye level and hover for 3 or 4 seconds. They quickly speed off to the feeder and take a long drink, then several short sips before flying to another part of the yard. All the while they emit a kind of bubbly chatty twitter that is slightly different from their other sounds. It’s such a happy little sound that I can’t help but feel their joy to have finally made it ‘home’ again safely.

Spotting another diner at what they perceive to be their personal nectar feeder, they approach quickly with a high-pitched series of squeaks. I’ve watched as both females and males indulge in this behavior. Presumably those sounds serve as a warning alert to the intruder as well as any other hummingbirds near enough to hear them.

After successfully chasing away the usurper, they fly off to land on a nearby branch awaiting the next territorial invader. While in flight they utter twittering sounds in sets of 2 or 3 separate segments, which are sometimes repeated for emphasis; as if to say, ‘put that in your pipe and smoke it’!

Now when it comes time for the male to court the female, he performs a magical pendulum dance in mid-air that is fascinating to witness. The female sits motionless and seemingly mesmerized as the male flies in a ‘u’-shaped arc. An ‘other-worldly’ whirring sound like those made in the old sci-fi alien spaceship movies can be easily heard if you listen for it. Rather than a vocal sound, this whirring is made from the movement of air passing over the hummer’s tail feathers as he performs his amazing aerial ballet.

I have learned to listen and watch for this wondrous maneuver a couple of weeks after the females have arrived. You see the males usually return approximately one week before their potential mates. For the sake of survival of the species, male hummingbirds will court another female as soon as their ‘mates’ have laid their eggs. They take no part in feeding or raising the young.

Have you ever seen hummingbirds ‘sword fighting’ as they ascend vertically? I have watched as males and females both engage in this curious non-lethal battle. They use their long beaks for more than just sipping nectar and picking spiders out of webs. While climbing higher and higher, their beaks cross back and forth just like dueling swordsmen!

These little powerhouses are feisty characters indeed. During these aerial battles, you can hear a more low-pitched series of twitters uttered all the way to the top of the flight. Each then speeds away: one back toward their territory and the feeder, and the other disappears into the distance. These conflicts occur quite often on the warmer days of summer.

While sitting on the clothesline in a rain shower, hummers frequently spread their tails and shake them. They do the same for their wings and head. You can tell they are really enjoying the warm water cascading over their feathers as they make their constant rain ‘squit ‘sounds. I think this is equivalent to singing in the shower for them!

You can tell I appreciate and enjoy my hummingbirds and all their sounds. I look forward to their arrival each year, and plan my outdoor activities to make sure I’m on hand to greet them when they get here. Like old friends who have been apart for a long time, we are very happy to see each other again!

Hardscaping – Deciding Necessary Hardscape Garden Features

Just as with home construction, most landscaping projects are a series of smaller projects. Some are confined to the realm of landscaping and some are basic construction projects that just happen to be part of the landscape. Things such as decks, sheds, walls, fences, steps, and etc. which are considered the hardscaping, would all fit the discussion.

Deciding on which elements and features your yard needs and what will fit your budget can sometimes be a challenge. A simple assessment might help determine it for you. While some hardscaping may be created purely for looks and beauty, some may be added to the project due to necessity. Look around your yard and see what might be necessary.

– Retaining Walls, Rock Walls – Retaining walls can be used to create raised garden beds, to prevent erosion, and to stabilize steep-sloped banks. They can be crafted from large river rocks, field stone, railroad ties, heavy timbers, concrete blocks, or even small boulders. Quality of construction is critical: they must be sturdy enough to support the weight of the fill behind them. Seek professional help for best results. Even if you want to build walls yourself or if they don’t need to be extensive, you should always get advice on specifications.

– Steps – When considering steps and stairs, safety should be a priority along with aesthetics. Steps that are too small or that possess risers that are too steep can pose safety concerns. If steps’ incline must be steep to accommodate a more dramatic slope, it is wise to add some sort of railing feature. Steps may be constructed from a variety of materials such as bricks, cobblestones, concrete, landscaping timbers, concrete blocks, and quarried stone. Railroad ties or landscaping timbers can be used as step outlined and filled with pebbles or crushed stone to add an interesting design element. Flat, natural boulders can create an attractive and rustic set of steps. Steps can also be interspersed occasionally with landings to add interest.

– Walkways/Paths – Since we gardeners tend to have an optimistic, looking-up approach, we have the looking down for last. In contrast to the above height-oriented options, we do have to think about the ground we walk upon. Planning walkways and paths for both function and design is essential. Paths can be rustic ones by utilizing bricks, good quality flagstone such as Chilton stone, crushed rock, pavers, or woodchips. Steppers should be placed so that the surface is flush with the lawn for personal safety and for the convenience of mowing. Other attractive paths are frequently created from brick type pavers. A note on woodchips: they make a perfect ground cover for areas where smaller children will be playing, i.e. under a tree swing or jungle gym.

When considering your non-plant garden features, also think about the overall theme for your yard and its various uses (dining, entertaining, outdoor living, children’s area, etc.). Be sure to include design elements that you love, such as nautical elements, roosters, symbols of the sun, etc. and that you will enjoy. Whether your garden is for your cottage, mansion, suburban dwelling, or retreat, these features will add appeal and complete your vision for the perfect outdoor area.

3 Awesome Chipmunk Repellents for Getting Rid of Chipmunks Humanely

When we think about getting rid of chipmunks, all methods can be split into two categories; humane and lethal.

Humane methods can further be split into categories such as trapping the chipmunks alive and using scare tactics to drive them from your yard. There are also a number of natural repellents that can get right up a chipmunk’s nose and three of these techniques will be discussed in this article.

1. Cat Litter

Chipmunks are scared to death of cats – it’s built in to their natural instincts.

If getting a cat to mark it’s territory around your yard isn’t an option, you need the next best thing: Cat Litter.

If you have a friend, relation or neighbor that has a cat (or cats) as a pet, ask them to give you their cat’s litter next time they change it instead of throwing it out. Then scatter the contents of the litter tray around your yard.

The pungent stench of cat urine will be enough to scare even the most die-hard chipmunk off your property.

2. Fox Urine Pellets

Staying with the ‘urine’ theme, the next chipmunk repellent on the list is fox urine.

Again, the fox is a natural predator of the chipmunk and if Mr. Chipmunk thinks Fantastic Mr. Fox is lurking around the neighborhood, he’ll start thinking seriously about packing up and moving on.

You can get fox urine in pellet or liquid form from many garden centers and even online from Amazon. One of the best is DeerBusters 100% fox urine, which is a little difficult to find on Amazon because it is marketed as a lure to attract foxes rather than a repellent to get rid of chipmunks – but it works great!

3. Mothballs

For some unknown reason, chipmunks hate mothballs!

Scatter them around your yard and, if you know where the entrances to their tunnels are (which is no easy feat as they are often very well hidden) stuff a few mothballs down their holes, too.

Also, if the chipmunks are getting into places they shouldn’t such as your garage or under your floor, lay a few mothballs there to keep them out.

It’s probably fair to say that mothballs are more of a deterrent than a repellent because although chipmunks don’t particularly like them and will try to avoid them, they probably won’t force them off your property.

Other Methods

Although chipmunk repellents may get rid of your chipmunk infestation, there are more effective methods of chipmunk removal, the best of which is using either humane or lethal chipmunk traps.

5 Tips to Consider When Buying a Good Wheelbarrow

If you want to do your DIY construction projects with ease, we suggest that you look for the best equipment. When doing work in your yard, you will need a quality wheelbarrow for moving things around without any problem. As a matter of fact, if you want to work faster and easier, using a wheelbarrow is a great idea. So, it’s important that you opt for a good product. Below are some tips that can help you with your decision making process. Read on to know more.

Type of terrain

Before you buy one, we suggest that you take into account the type of terrain. For instance, a regular wheelbarrow may not work in a mountainous or rocky place. So, if you have a rocky compound, you may want to check out a three-wheel brand. Actually, these things can work well on terrains serving a lot better. On the other hand, a yard car or a regular wheelbarrow works great for a flat ground.

Capacity

Aside from the type of terrain, make sure you take into account the weight that will be carried in the wheelbarrow. For heavy loads, using a low capacity vehicle is not a good idea. You might end up damaging the carrier. For heavy loads, we suggest that you check out a wheelbarrow that offers higher capacity. Keep in mind that a smaller vehicle is a good choice for lighter items, such as yard trimmings and potted plants.

User limitations

You should consider your needs when buying the product. If you have some physical limitations, you may want to look for a three-wheel product since it is easier to carry around. You won’t need to exert a lot of force, which is a great benefit. So, we highly recommend buying this type of equipment for your loved ones, especially those who have a disability.

Dumping needs

You may have the best wheelbarrow to meet your needs; however, do you know how to empty the wheelbarrow? If you have a good carrier, it won’t be hard for you to empty it. Since most of the load rests on the only wheel of the carrier, you may find it a bit harder to balance the carrier when emptying it. You may want to buy a vehicle that offers enough room and flexibility when managing it.

Material of construction

Ideally, you may want to look for a wheelbarrow that will stand the test of time, and you won’t need to replace it over and over again. You can choose one made from strong iron since they last longer and stand horrible work conditions. So, the construction material of the equipment is an important factor to consider when making this buying decision.

Long story short, if you want to choose the best wheelbarrow, you may want to decide on what you are going to use the product for. In your decision making, we won’t recommend that you give a lot more importance to the design and beauty of the equipment. Instead, you should consider other important factors.

What’s a Butkus?

The dive play is the most basic play in the game. Objective: Gain one yard. The quarterback takes the snap, pivots, handing the football to the fullback – who slams into the scrimmage line, head on. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty, and it rarely creates a big play, but it builds confidence by creating a clear objective and accomplishing it. Simply put, if you don’t have the drive and determination to gain one yard, how in the world would you expect to score a touch down?

Finding something assumes that you are looking for it! Finding your Butkus, at it’s core means to find something that you already possess. It is already part of you, perhaps hidden deep inside your psyche or more likely, simply hiding in plain site. Right below your nose – in your heart.

In Kevin Costner’s movie “A Field if Dreams” his character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice from the cornfield, “If you build it he will come.” He is asked to trust a whisper and hear a feeling. The voice wants him to listen and then take action – completely on faith.

While the tall corn may not be calling you, I’m certain you have had an inspired thought while showering or driving a car. A gut feeling that says take action.

Your Butkus, I say with a wink, is found slightly south by reaching around and finding your rear end. With both hands I might add! Perhaps the reason you haven’t found your Butkus as yet, is because you’re sitting on it!

So what is a Butkus?

No, it’s not But-Kis, its pronounced But-Kus. You say it deliberately, and always with attitude. If you are a sports fan you have probably heard the name, Dick Butkus. In fact most people in North America have heard that name, although they may not know who or what it is.

And yes, it is an odd name.

But, there is nothing funny about the image or the iconic status this name represents. Like a four year old, when I first heard this name and saw the NFL image of Dick Butkus, I was intrigued. Actually it was more like, “in awe”.

NFL Films states; “Dick Butkus played football with a religious fervor, with an unrelenting obsession, not to excel, but to dominate and demoralize. For Dick Butkus it never a game, but a street-fight, a place for all out, no holds barred warfare. Butkus was the most destructive defender in the game and the NFL is filled with stories of men who crossed him. He was a force of unmanageable proportions; he was Moby Dick in a goldfish bowl. His career stands as the most sustained work of devastation ever committed on a football field by anyone, anywhere, at anytime.”

Dick Butkus is remembered as the toughest man to ever play pro football. A guy who, no matter what; would not quit. He never won a championship or a Superbowl; hell his team was so bad they never even made it to a playoff game. That however did not stop him from becoming one of the best to ever play NFL Football.

Myself, as a football playing twelve year old, I wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything from his pigeon toed hulking walk, to the colors of his uniform was formidable. It all captured my imagination. His linebacker stance, crouching like a mountain lion ready to pounce was intimidating enough. But when he moved, fully committed, he launched himself with reckless abandon; he was like no other player on the field.

Butkus, for me, became a metaphor for movement and a symbol for effort and accomplishment. No matter what the odds, you never give up. If I invoked my Butkus, I knew what to do, and when to do it.

Now that I’ve painted a picture of what Butkus looked like and how important he was, I have to tell you, I didn’t get it right away. In fact, it took me over thirty years to understand. I had to look deep within my memories to find something I thought already knew.

And that’s the rub! “Having doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use” is a topic for a later discussion, but for now, its safe to say; simply knowing something does not make it valuable.

Knowledgeable people are regularly over worked, underpaid, and under appreciated not only by others, but – mostly by themselves. Michelangelo, the great artist (not the ninja turtle) says “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim to high and falling short; but setting our aim too low, and achieving the mark!”

Have you been achieving the low side of what you ask for? Looking for success in all the wrong places? Were you taught, like me, that opportunities took years of suffering to accomplish. They are beyond your control? Were you told to learn more, to create skills you did not have and go places set by someone else? Then, when you arrived, told again, it would be hard, in fact life was hard. You needed be tough and learn to put up with what you don’t want, – to get what you do! Bullshit.

I say, what you want – wants you, what you are looking for is looking for you. What you want, doesn’t merely exist, more exactly, it already exists inside you. It isn’t hard, but yes, it is intense and it does require your full attention! You have heard, I am sure of the natural laws of the universe? I contend the “Law of Attraction” exists not as an external magnet to get you what you want, rather it synchronizes your desires to bring you more of what you already have.

In the movie ‘The Lion King”, Mufasa, called down from the heavens to his son, Simba, commanding “Remember who you are!” Your job is to find, perhaps simply remember “what” it is you already possess. What whispers to you will lead you Find Your Butkus.

Strike that; Remember who you are! Find your own words, Find your??? in Life!

Like the basic dive play, create an objective you can count on – one that builds confidence. Keep it simple, something as warm as puppy. Guaranteed to gain a yard whenever you need it. Just the act of feeling good can put you in the right frame of mind to start noticing what’s important.

It’s not finding out what works in life, no, it’s finding your bliss. Trust me, if my dream was a guy named Dick Butkus, can what you want, be any crazier? Open the door to your desires, listen to your field of dreams and then allow all the people, places and things you desire to come to you.

Water, Wood, Fire: Three Elements of Garden Decor

Decorating a yard or garden is largely a matter of personal taste. There are several elements that tend to be recognized to create a given mood or enhance the look of the area. Water is often used. Japanese gardens have traditionally used water to draw the eye to various focal points in the garden. These ancient designs derive influence from Taoist or Shinto values. Taoist and Shinto disciplines emphasize harmony with oneself and with the environment. As such, Japanese gardens tend to fit in with their surroundings. It is common for a Japanese garden to mimic the landscape of rural Japan, with features resembling mountains, forests, rivers and prairies.

A stream with real water requires significant infrastructure, including pumps and filters. Sometimes a simulated river will be created out of river rock, complete with bridges and other features exclusive to a riparian environment. These simulated rivers are much easier to maintain, and require only an occasional pass with a leaf blower to look put together.

Plants are another feature that yards and gardens have. Plants, or the lack thereof, tend to determine the feel for a space, even more than water or fire. This is probably because plants can be very large, and can alter the amount of light in a space, and to some degree, alter the temperature. Large, spreading trees can create a canopy in summer that reduces the temperature by up to 20 or 30 degrees Fahrenheit. If these trees are deciduous, the winter sun will be able to reach the ground under them, warming the space.

Smaller plants set the tone for the area as well. Some gardens and yards are immaculately trimmed, with bushes and hedges sculpted along precise lines. This style of bush trimming requires a high amount of maintenance, and pairs well with short, tiff grass. The effect will be similar to that of a small golf course. Perhaps around the edges of a property, or in a larger yard, a more rough look is appropriate, as it will require much less time and energy to maintain. Citrus trees are often a great choice, as they look great with little maintenance, and have the added benefit of providing fruit around Christmas time and late winter.

A final feature that tends to increase the allure of a garden space is fire. A controlled fire can be safe and intriguing, and there are a myriad of ways to incorporate fire into a yard or garden. A simple way is with small, gas torches. Tiki torches are small bottles of gas that are mounted on bamboo poles, which are in turn inserted into the ground. While the flames only reach a few inches above the end of the torch, the bottles themselves are located about six feet off the ground, which spreads the light over a wider area. Usually several Tiki torches will be used, and will encircle a swimming pool or line a walk. Wherever they are used, they provide a tropical, adventurous feel to a space.

Another way to bring fire safely into an outdoor space is with a fire pit. Fire pits and decorative barbeques can take a variety of shapes. The simplest are mobile units that have three legs, a bowl for holding the wood, a mesh wall, and a solid metal lid. The mesh allows air in to feed the flames, but prevents sparks from spreading.

More permanent solutions are permanent stainless steel or masonry structures. These might be built into the ground or a fire pit table. These fire pits might be wood burning, but more commonly are propane supplied. This means that they are safer and easier to control than wood or charcoal briquettes. The propane can also be easily diverted into a functional barbeque or oven for preparing food, something that is much more difficult with a wood-burning pit.

By incorporating water, plants and fire, one can transform an outdoor space into a mini-ecosystem, and a peaceful retreat suitable for entertaining and relaxing.

Insanity Workout Vs HIIT Training – A Must Read!

Many people have heard of HIIT training, which stands for High Intensity Interval Training. This training method is said to give great results in a short amount of time. No need to spend hours in the gym. However, sometimes it is difficult to put together a HIIT training program that is easy to follow. If that is what you are looking for, Beachbody provides such a workout, Insanity by Shaun T.

The Insanity workout program is a 60 day (63 to be exact) boot-camp like workout. Based on the theory behind HIIT training, Insanity utilizes intervals to keep your heart rate moving up and down. However, Insanity differs significantly from traditional intervals in one key way. Whereas in tradition HIIT training, you perform short bursts, such as a 50 yard or 30 second sprint, followed by a 2-3 minute active rest, which is usually a walk or slow pedal. With this type of training, your heart rate shoots up quickly and then comes down to a slower pace. For example, when I do traditional HIIT training, I do outdoor sprints. I will sprint 100 yards and walk 300 yards. At the end of the sprint, my heart rate is in the 170’s (beats per minute). At the end of the 300 yard walk, my heart rate drops to the 100’s. Not bad, but could definitely improve.

With Insanity, the intervals are about 3-4 minutes long and consist of exercises such as pushups, jumps, sprints, hops, and a myriad of other sports training moves. A lot of the moves remind me of playing high school sports. After the interval, you rest for 30 second. At the end of the 30 seconds, the next interval starts! Insanity has basically taken traditional HIIT training and flipped it on its head. Now to compare heart rates again, during the Insanity interval, my heart rate is in the high 170’s. During the 30 second rest, I get it down to the high 150’s. See the difference. My heart rate is staying elevated for a longer period of time which helps me to burn a ton of calories. At the end of an Insanity workout, there is not a dry patch of clothes on me.

Now understand that Insanity is not for everyone. You must be mentally and physically prepared to put your body through 63 days of extreme work. Great results do not come easy. Both Insanity and traditional HIIT training work to help you reduce body fat. If you don’t think you can handle Insanity, start with traditional HIIT training to build up your cardio-endurance. Once you have trained your cardiovascular system to handle intervals, you should be ready to try Insanity!

Hammocks truly are the best accessory for a garden that you could possibly find.

Garden Lights and Other Outdoor Lighting Options

If you’re looking to add some light to your garden, deck, back porch, or back yard, or even the front yard – you are in luck! While it might cost you a little bit (or even a lot) of money, and take some different trial and error set ups to determine what works best, there are a ton of options out there for you to play with when it comes to lighting up the outside of your home, the outside of your deck or porch, and of course the yard and the garden itself.

With so many options on the table, where do you start? Well, that’s a good question. Let’s hold on to it for a minute while we take a look at some of the more popular types of garden and outdoor lights for home use.

Ground Stakes. These are options that mount into the ground. Most commonly used in and around specific plants you want to light up as well as being used to light up pathways with lights that are not easily movable. These are also commonly solar powered.

Hanging options – and this usually means solar hanging lights – are awesome for lighting up walkways and pathways. They also add a very classy look to youre garden!

For the back deck or front porch at night, stairs can be a risky venture. That’s what stair lights were invented for – to light those stairs up so you don’t have to worry about where you’re stepping! Again, solar powered stair lights are popular for this purpose as you don’t have to mess with any wiring!

Spot and flood, these types of lights are used to cast a wide light over a whole area. Flood lights are more wide whereas spot lights offer a more narrow pinpoint to focus on. As with most types of outdoor lighting made these days, there are both conventional and solar powered spot and flood lights. Because of the high amount of light caste from these units, many people use standard lights over solar light.

Additionally, beyond all these types of fantastic garden and outdoor lights listed above, there are many other types of outdoor or garden lights that we can qualify under the general or misc. category of lighting. Take a look at any home or garden shop and you will see what we mean. Depending on your garden set up, these misc. types of lights could offer the lighting you are looking for to get your garden just right!

If you just want to get your feet wet – or shall I say, if you just want to get your thumb a little green, and you’re just getting started with gardening and lights and how it all works, take a look at what’s called an Aerogarden. An Aerogarden is a self-contained indoor gardening unit that also comes with it’s own LED based lighting system. Observing how these units function could be a great start in understanding the basics of how to work with plants and lighting systems to promote healthy plants and gardens!

The Wood Chipper 101

Welcome to the ever-expanding, ever exciting discussion topic of wood chippers! Yes, my friends, wood chippers are the new black. Not really. But they are useful for everyday gardening, landscapers, municipalities-why, I bet even those fancy celebrities everyone’s always talking about own one, or at least their gardeners are using it. In any case, wood chippers are better, faster, and chipping away better than ever before.

Wood chippers and chipper shredders are mainly used to slash fallen tree limbs, branches and uprooted trunks into wood chips and sawdust. They’re extremely helpful for getting rid of yard waste and converting backyard trash into valuable garden materials, like wood chips for ground cover. Plus, it’s easy to use since most are powered by internal engines. All you need to do is insert the yard trimmings and the wood chipper does the rest for you. Many even come with different options to suit your particular yard cleaning dilemma, such as mulching. And others come with reversible feeding, so your engine doesn’t have to work overtime and the chipper knives don’t wear down too quickly.

Old, archaic chipper shredders used to sound like chainsaws from horror films. You know, that VROOM VROOM sound? Nowadays, wood chippers are much quieter due to more powerful motors and mufflers, so there’s no need to be frightened of the sound. However, one must use absolute caution when operating a wood chipper. In fact, one ought to pay it the utmost respect, lest it painfully shred up an appendage or two. As long as you use common sense and practice safety techniques at all times during operation, no harm will come to you-just to your dead tree limbs, and they can’t feel anything.

The newer, lightweight versions are not only compact, but they also help convert dead leaves into new mulch that improve your garden’s soil. Other versions have higher powered motors that can chip and shred pretty much anything recommended. Yet every wood chipper is as individualistic as its owner. Whether you need a compact model wood chipper to get of some brush, or a heavy duty monster to shred up the remains of a forest, chippers everywhere are waiting anxiously to be used. Don’t disappoint them.
