7. When the timer goes off, read what you have written and give it a title. Write your title on the top left-hand corner.
8. For best results, the parent should free write in his or her scribbler each time the child writes.
9. Spelling, neatness, grammar, spacing, etc. do not count (I can’t stress this enough).

I never knew what would flow out of my pen and I discovered many things about myself. The second was that writing became much easier. Recently, I’ve taken some time to review and read a lot of web content sites, blog sites, and article sites, and one thing I’ve noticed quite frequently is that many people don’t seem to know when to break a line for a paragraph in their content. Paragraphs are important for several reasons, and if you want your writing to be the very best, it is important to know when to add a paragraph break and why.

Web content is a bit different than print items in that the reader will be viewer the content on a screen and not on a page or in a book. Many people use reading guides or their fingers or note cards to follow along while they are reading a print item, but this is nearly impossible to do on the computer without leaving unsightly fingerprints on your monitor. That brings me to the first reason why paragraph breaks are important: to make it easier for your readers to read your content without too much eye strain.

Another reason for proper paragraph breaks is to make the writing more attractive at first glance. A page with a long scroll of writing with no breaks is not only NOT attractive, but it is a bit intimidating to read too.

Also, paragraph breaks are important to break up when thoughts flow from one to another, allowing the reader to know when a thought or mood or tone shift has occurred in the writing. This helps break the elements of the writing up into distinct sections with similar content, allowing the reader to more easily focus on the key points of your writing.

So how do you determine where to place a paragraph break?

Good question… Let me try to give you a good answer that pleases both web copy writers and editors as well as hard core grammarians. A paragraph is a group of sentences lumped together by similar meaning, intent or content. When the thought changes or a new idea or concept is introduced, a paragraph break allows for a pause to shift the reader’s mind to the new concept or idea.

Next, for web copy especially, paragraphs should be kept short. When writing for print, longer paragraphs are more acceptable, but for web copy, 3-5 average length sentences is usually a good paragraph and then a paragraph break is needed.

Paragraphs are also used to break up or accentuate something if you are trying to make a point, add impact. For example, if you have one sentence that makes a strong point and you really want to make it stand out, you could make that sentence a paragraph all by itself, with a break before and after, causing the reader to really take notice of that sentence.

For dialogue, there should be a paragraph break before each new speaker. This means that sometimes very short dialogue will be on a line all by itself. This is just proper punctuation for dialogue so that it is easy to see who is saying what. For quotes, short quotes can be included in the same paragraph as other text, but longer quotes, of more than one or two lines, should be in a paragraph by itself. If you write papers or magazine articles and newsprint, you should check out the AP style guide for newsprint, the Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, or APA style guides for how to properly cite quotations for other types of writing.)

Writing about a highly technical topic, like crime or law, can be intimidating. In the world of criminal law, there are innumerable rules, practices and procedures. Criminal lawyers speak their own language. To write a good crime or legal story, a writer needs to have credibility.

Credibility comes from working within the rules of criminal law and speaking the criminal law language. But you don’t have to be a cop or lawyer to write about crime or criminal law with authenticity. Here are some tips to get started:

1. Brainstorm: As in any genre, a good story with interesting characters and plot twists must be the starting point. Physically write out brainstorming ideas without regard to order, quality or completeness. Just start writing, and let the ideas flow.

2. Get Inspired: Inspiration often comes from outside sources, often unexpectedly. Read great books, and watch great movies, especially crime and legal drama. Read about crime in the news. Follow interesting trials. Watch true crime stories on television and read true crime books. You never know when some small tidbit will spark a story in you.

3. Outline: Everyone has their own methods of and opinions about outlining. Whether organized by chapter, act, scene, character or plot point, outlining is a critical tool to organize a story. The more complex the story, the more important an outline can be. Outlining can be especially important in a crime novel or legal drama because your story needs to fit within the rules of the criminal law world.

For example, if you want to have a piece of exculpatory evidence discovered at the end of act two, you will have to know what stage of the legal proceedings the case is in to help determine how the evidence could realistically come to light.

4. Educate Yourself: Read up about real criminal law on the internet and in books. Look for information specifically targeted to the non-lawyer. Watch real trials when they are televised. Watch true crime shows. Although they often cut out a lot of detail, especially the procedural stuff, they usually get things right. Read news stories and true crime books. The same warning goes for these sources: they are usually accurate but often leave out details you might want to know.

Do not rely on talking head lawyer commentators on television. They usually speak off the tops of their heads and often get things wrong. They also often have an agenda that they are pushing and speak of things from that point-of-view. Finally, do not rely on other criminal law fiction. Crime fiction in television, movies and books are often completely, eye-rollingly off the mark.

5. Consult an Expert: When in doubt, ask a question. As you brainstorm, outline and draft, keep notes of questions that come up. Consulting an expert, usually a criminal lawyer, can be costly, so try to know what you want guidance on before you contact someone. Also, be sure to speak to someone who is able to explain things simply and clearly, and who is willing to admit when they do not know something.

Following these tips will give a writer confidence to create within the world of criminal law and to begin writing crime and legal stories with authenticity.

What DO you know? Actually, you know a lot more than you think.

If you’re writing fiction, you probably know all that you need to know. What you desperately want to do is to get started. Writer’s Block?

Probably that what it seems like. But in truth there is no “Writer’s Block”. It’s all a function of perspective.

Do you agonize about what you write? Do you write a sentence and then re-write it to make it “perfect”? How do you know when it’s “perfect”?

A better question is “How do you suspend disbelief while you are writing”?

For example, when I prepared this piece, its draft copy was replete with little red squiggles everywhere. Every line looks like its bleeding red ink. And so it was: I don’t care (while I’m writing) if what I’ve written is spelled correctly. I don’t even care if it doesn’t hang together. Those are steps I’ll take when I get around to editing it.

My objective for this draft is to put down at least 2,500 words in under 2 hours. My goal is to do those 2,500 words in less than an hour. But if I can maintain a writing speed of 1,200 words an hour, I can write a 36,000 word story in just under 30 hours. By writing 2 hours a day, that’s only 15 days worth of writing!

A novel is around 50,000 words. At 1,200 words an hour, I can write that in just over 40 hours. To write that novel in 30 days, I only have to write less than 2 hours a day!

So, what’s stopping me? A story idea? What should I write about? How should I write about?

Questions, questions. “Who cares,” say I. “Let’s just go and do it.”

For example, I like to write action stories, sometimes mysteries, and sometimes thrillers.

But where to start?

Here’s an idea. Last week I took an audio test to determine if I was a candidate for hearing aids (My wife vociferously and emphatically says “Yes!!).

Boring material, you say? Let’s explore it further. How about this story fragment:

The hearing test was going smoothly. Eleanor Brightwater had completed the “When you hear the tone, press the button” part. She was now sitting quietly with her eyes closed as the audiologist intoned,

“Say the word ‘bat'”. “Bat”.

“Say the word, ‘run.” “Rune”.

“Say the word, “like'”. “Bike”.

There was a pause.

Then she heard in a softer voice, ‘Say the word ‘knife’.” Knife”.

“Say the word, ‘Murder'”. “Mother”.

“Say the word, ‘kill'”.

Her eyes flew open. Looking through the booth’s bulletproof glass window, the first thing she saw was the audiologist slumped half out of his chair, an ugly hash on his forehead that extended down to a line around his neck, and then to a sea of red that had stained his white lab coat.

The second thing she saw was a grinning apparition with pointy teeth, waving a butcher’s knife in one hand and strangling a microphone in the other. It gave a maniacal giggle, then stuck its tattooed tongue out at her.

Eleanor screamed, and clawed the earphones from her head. She lurched against the booth’s door, but it wouldn’t budge, pinned by some heavy object outside.

She beat on the glass until her fists began to bleed.

Sobbing hysterically, she tried to rib the booth-mounted char loose.

The apparition jumped up and down, repeatedly striking the audiologist and the desk, giggling maniacally. It shrieked at her and slapped the booth’s window with the knife.

She knew what it wanted to do to her, but she was powerless to repel.

[ now… how would you fill in the next paragraph?]

So far, I’ve written under 700 words of just over a total of 1200 words for this article. It took me less than 45 minutes to compose. Another 15 minutes to go back and correct the spelling. I’m not beating my time, but neither am I at a loss for words. The words are all there, neatly assembled, packaged, and reeling out as if I were reading them off of an uncoiling ticker tape.

And you can do this, too.

All you have to do is to believe that you can do it.

And practice.

And write.

And write some more.

But let’s go back to “How Do I Start?’

Here are some helpful steps:

Step #1: Take a blank piece of paper (lined is OK, as you may desire. Using a computer is optional) and sharp pencil without an eraser.

Step #2: Pick up any book you have at hand. Open it randomly and select a paragraph.

Step #3: Start copying that paragraph. Write down the first 50 words or so.

Step # 4: Close the book. Write a sentence that completes the last thought that you copied from the book.

Step #6: Continue writing, forgetting about spelling errors, grammatical constructions and the other ‘ilities’ that make up what other people think is good prose.

Step #7: Write for at least 1 hour before stopping.

Se, you’ve begun!

Now you can go back and spell check what you wrote. Punctuate it as you may desire, or toss it all in the recycling bin. The act of writing is more important that what you wrote.

Now, let’s say you want to extend beyond starting copying something. OK, let’s try another story.

Think of your last pleasant vacation. Visualize yourself being there. In your mind’s eye, see the surroundings. Then write a one sentence description about anything you see.

My last trip to England, I flew into Heathrow, and took the express train to Paddington Station.

[I continue the thought thusly… ]

When I exited the train, the first thing that caught my eye was a Paddington Bear shop. In the window was an oversized statue of Mr. Paddington Bear, himself, holding his ubiquitous suitcase.

“Hello, Mr. Bear! Where are you off to this time?” I said.

Paddington Bear turned to me and said in a melodious voice, “I’m off to Australia and New Zealand! Never been there, but I’ve heard it’s a lovely trip.”

“But you’re from Patagonia,” I said. “Have you been back there?”

“No, not since I left, many years back,” he replied.

“Don’t you send posts to them to let them know what’s happening and where you are?”

Sorrowfully, Paddington looked down at his brown shows. “I can’t write,” Paddington Bear said with a sigh. Then he perked up, “But my Author does! I’ll get him to send some posts. He’s good at that sort of things. And I know my kinfolks back home are wondering what’s become of me. Thank you for the suggestion!”

Then his shoulders drooped again. “But they can’t read, either,” he said as a single tear coursed down his furry nose, plopping on the marble statue base.

“How can that be?” I asked. “After all, someone had to write that note that ‘s around your neck!”

“You’re right,” and he brightened up. “I’ll bet someone down there can do it! Thank you for the suggestion.”

With that, Mr. Paddington Bear stepped off the marble base and vanished!

So, I ask again, “Future Novelist, What’s stopping you?”

Early literacy instruction is a complex process. There is no question that this process is a valuable part of a student’s learning and helps create a solid foundation for future growth. There are countless strategies and methods to helping children to read and write. As such, every teacher will approach literacy instruction differently. Many people believe that a student must learn to read first and learn to write second. From this perspective, reading is a stepping stone to writing. This assumes that literacy develops in a very linear progression.

An alternate understanding of helping children to read and write is based on an understanding of reading and writing as reciprocal. The reciprocal perspective maintains that learning to read and learning to write are processes that complement one another. Marie Clay has championed this concept, producing research to support the benefits of identifying reading and writing as reciprocal. Teachers who subscribe to this methodology teach reading and writing at the same time, eliminating any boundaries that separate these skills. This path to literacy instruction requires a fluid school schedule instead of one that separates reading and online writing courses into different blocks in the school day.

Once you’ve done your research, you can present the information to your child in a variety of ways. You could approach the task as you would ‘reading time’ with your child, and read from your sources. Alternatively, you could set up a study space in your house where you can sit and learn with your children. Regardless of how you present or share the information with your children, it is important that you provide them with an opportunity to do a bit of creating on their own.

Based on this viewpoint, young children will recall text they have encountered as they begin to write. Likewise, they evaluate their spelling skills as they read. Here’s an example: imagine that a teacher asks a young boy to spell the word “bone”. Sounding it out, he writes “b-o-n”. At this point, the teacher adds the “e” at the end. The child then exclaims, “Oh yeah! That’s how I remember seeing it at the science centre!”

In sum, helping children to read and writing go hand in hand. Hence, it is valuable to treat reading and writing as complementary, rather than separate skills.
