Most window manufacturers offer several types of glazing. The types vary considerably in insulation value of the window and the likelihood of condensation forming on the glass. Glazings can be sealed (thermal pane) or unsealed. Sealed glazing units eliminate condensation between glazings.

All windows should be at least double-glazed. If you have difficulty determining the number of glazings in a particular window, hold a light next to the glass and count the reflections, which will correspond to the number of glazings.

Air Space Size & Insulation Value

Glass by itself is not a good insulator. However motionless air between panes of glass improves thermal resistance (resistance to heat flow).

The width of air space between two panes of glass influences the insulation value of the glazing.

Insulation values are measured in RSI (metric) and R (imperial): the higher the value, the better the material insulates.

Typical double-glazing with air space width of 12mm (1/2′) gives an insulation value for RSI.35 (R-2). In comparison, double-glazing with a 6mm (1/4′) air space provides only RSU.26 (R-1.5). Avoid glazings with an airspace of less than 10 mm (1/2″), unless the space is filled with argon gas as this enhances the glass to be more energy efficient.

Standard Sealed Units

A standard sealed unit consists of two sheets of glass spaced about 12 mm (1/2″) apart. A desiccant (moisture-removing substance) is included in the edge spacer to absorb moisture and the unit is sealed around the outside edge to prevent air or moisture from entering the air space.

If moist air finds its way into the sealed air space, condensation may form between the glazing. This is usually caused by a faulty sealant and can be corrected only through replacement of the sealed unit, it does not require the whole window being replaced, just the sealed unit.

Before buying, you can determine whether a standard sealed unit is likely to perform well by:

Ensuring that the edge spacer at the perimeter of the glass, or in some cases, the glass itself is etched with IGMAC (Insulated Glass Manufacturers Association of Canada) label. Ensure that the air space between glazings is no less than 12mm (1/2″)

Improved Sealed Units

Triple glazing increases the insulation value of a sealed unit by adding extra air space. Both air spaces in a standard triple glazed should be 12mm (1/2″) wide.

Glass Coatings

Gas Fill

The insulation value of a sealed unit is greater if an inert gas (argon or krypton) is used to fill the space between the two panes of glass. Argon is less expensive than krypton but the latter is effective in air spaces as narrow as 1/4″. If you order gas filled units make sure the manufacturers label indicates this.

High Performance Triple Glazing

Standard triple glazing has been largely replaced by Low-E double-glazing. However, extra high performance glazing is possible using Low-E triple glazing and gas fill. Some manufacturers use plastic film with Low-E coating as the middle glazing to reduce the weight of the unit and increase the amount of solar energy that can pass through glazing.

Improved Edge Seals

Aluminum edge spacers conduct heat rapidly and can substantially decrease a window’s insulation value.

Non-conductive spacers such as butyl-metal or insulated spacers reduce heat loss and the potential for perimeter condensation (I.e.: warm edge spacer).

All I want is a little clarity. I am the type of person who gets bothered by imprecise language, especially when it is within my own industry. You see, it’s my job to write about window blinds and shades and the terms, window treatments and coverings are bantered about all the time with little regard to their real meaning.

I decided to do some research and get a definitive answer, which I would share with the public. I am not expecting to create some kind of revolution just want to shed some light on a couple of pretty nebulous words.

First, I went to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary and found nothing, no definition for either word. How could that be? These are fairly common terms. This is confusing to me. I use an online tool in my work that tells me how many times per day the internet searching public uses keywords. The word window treatments gets used about 2,600 per day and the word window coverings gets used about 625 per day. And yet, these words are not clearly defined. I sense a conspiracy – just kidding.

My next resource was Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia with descriptions and explanations written by everyday people. I found the following entries:

A window covering is material used to cover a window to reduce sunlight, to provide additional weatherproofing, or to ensure privacy. Window Coverings are usually on the interior side of windows, but can be on the exterior in some situations. Types of coverings include: drapes, curtains, window blinds, including: Venetian blinds, mini blinds, window shutters, various types of boarding, nailed or screwed to the window casing, can be used as temporary window covering.

In interior decorating, a window treatment may refer to any of the following items placed over or around a window: curtains or drapery, including sheers, window blinds, including Venetian blinds, a valance, tiebacks used to hold curtains. It may also include treatments applied to directly to the glass, including: frosted glass (through acid, etching, sandblasting, or plastic films or panels), distorted optics, such as wavy glass, stained glass panels or ornaments.

It seems to me, based on these two entries that there is little difference between their meanings. Both include window blinds, drapes, curtains and Venetian blinds (an old term for what is now commonly referred to as mini blinds). Where they seem to depart, at least according to these descriptions is that window coverings includes shutters (in this case plantation shutters) and window treatments can include treatments to the glass itself.

Both have the basic meaning of something to decorate or cover a window for privacy and light-control (room darkening) and to accentuate the décor of a room. So, essentially what we have here are two poorly defined words that have virtually the same meaning. So, I would like to make a personal ruling on this issue and say that window treatments should be any treatment: drapes, blinds and shades on the interior (inside) portion of a window, whereas window coverings should be any treatment: shutters, storm shutters, and awnings to the outside portion of a window. That seems clearer to me. Doesn’t mean that everyone is suddenly going to jump on my definition bandwagon, but I can hope.

The past few weeks, my wife has been to the doctor. Alarm came when one doctor told her she found an irregular heart beat. She was sent to a cardiologist. Tests are being run at this time to see if there is a blockage.

She believes, quite strongly, the redbird is sending her a message. It comes from her mother’s spirit.

The universe can often relay messages to us through signs. Often, we are too busy to stop and consider what may or may not be a sign. We may ask the universe for guidance, yet fail to recognize the sign it sends us in response.
