Fructose Malabsorption: Breaking It Down!

Fructose Malabsorption (FM)

Fructose is a monosaccharide found in three main forms in the diet:

1. Free fructose

2. A constitute of sucrose

3. Fructan

Polymer of fructose, usually in oligosaccharide form, with a terminal glucose also known as inulins, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) or oligofructose.

Fructose is a monosaccharide (or a simple sugar). Fructose is also known as fruit sugar. It is found in three main forms in the diet: as free fructose (present in honey and fruits); as a constituent of the disaccharide sucrose (equal glucose/ fructose ratio); or as fructans, a polymer of fructose usually in oligosaccharide form (present in wheat and some vegetables). This short chain carbohydrate is found widely in our diet as a free hexose in fruits as a disaccharide in sucrose and in a polymerized form known as fructans.

Fructose is present in many of the foods that we eat, both natural and processed including countless fruits and vegetables. Honey, pears, fruit juices, agave syrup and apples are just a few natural foods that contain significant amounts of fructose. All fruits contain some fructose, so portions are very important. Fructose is commonly added as a sweetener in the form of high fructose corn syrup in processed foods, beverages and soft drinks.

Fructans are oligosaccharides and polysaccharides of fructose units with a glucose terminal end. These chains of fructose molecules known as fructans occur naturally in many foods. Fructans alone induce abdominal symptoms because they are not hydrolysed or absorbed in the small intestine. Fructans are a big problem for fructose malabsorption sufferers. Some foods with high fructan content are wheat, artichokes, leeks, onions and inulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS). Inulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) are fiber added to some foods and supplements. It is important to keep the amount of fructans in the diet limited if not avoided completely.

Glucose, known also as dextrose, is another monosaccharide or in other words a simple sugar. Glucose is one of the simplest forms of sugar that serves as a building block for most carbohydrates. Both fructose and glucose have about the same caloric value, fructose being quite a bit sweeter. Fructose absorbs easier when combined with glucose. Even with consumption of glucose there is a limit as to how much fructose the body can handle. Glucose tablets are available in most drug and grocery stores, usually in the diabetic section or at the pharmacy. Dextrose powder (or glucose powder) can be used for many recipes or to sweeten drinks. You can purchase it at beer and wine making supply shops, some vitamin and health stores and also online.

It is not as sweet as sugar or fructose but many people find it to be just sweet enough. You can always add more. Some fructmals use a one to one and half ratio to substitute glucose for sugar in recipes. Also smarties and sweet tart candies have a main ingredient of glucose. These candies can be eaten to absorb excess free fructose. However you must always check labels because they change their ingredients here and there. Some actually contain high fructose corn syrup and that is a great big no-no for fructmal sufferers. The main ingredient should read glucose or dextrose. Labels are read by the understanding that the first listed ingredient is the main ingredient and the list follows suit in this order with the last ingredient having the least amount within.

Sucrose or table sugar is made of two sugars, fructose and glucose. It is known as a double sugar made of one part fructose and one part glucose. People with fructose malabsorption can eat sucrose (limited amounts) because the glucose assists with the absorption of fructose. Large amounts of sucrose in one sitting might pose problematic, as a large load of fructose in any form will cause symptoms.

All humans have a limited amount of fructose that they can absorb. The ability of the human small intestine to absorb fructose is limited and unique to each individual. A healthy person can only absorb twenty-five to fifty grams of fructose per sitting. No one has an unlimited free-reign on consumption of fructose so everyone is fructose malabsorption to some degree. Fructmals are described as being able to absorb less that twenty-five grams per sitting. The degree of malabsorption can vary from individual to individual.

Some people are very sensitive and less fructose is likely to cause the gas and bloating that result quickly from an excess of fructose. As with lactose (a milk sugar found in milk and dairy foods), individuals have a threshold for the amount of fructose that can ingest without developing symptoms. Fructose malabsorption is actually written to be fairly common, yet is not well-known. Most people are unaware of what it is, including doctors and medical professionals.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been getting a lot of attention these days. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn and can be found in numerous foods and beverages on grocery store shelves in the United States. HFCS is composed of either 42 percent or 55 percent fructose, with the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and higher sugars. There is a lot of controversy as to how safe it is for consumption. Many allege that it leads to obesity.

The Corn Refiners Association claims that HFCS is natural and similar to table sugar. Research is underway as to whether or not the claims against HFCS are true or false. Sugar in any form should being consumed in moderation for everyone is important. Elimination of HFCS is crucial for those who suffer from fructose malabsorption if there is a desire to heal and live a healthy life. Many processed food and beverages are made with high-fructose corn syrup. Currently the Corn Refiners Association is requesting that they can change the name of high fructose corn syrup to corn sugar so be aware.

To avoid symptoms, people with Fructose Malabsorption need to be aware of four main things in their diets:

1. The amount of fructose in a meal, total

2. The ratio of fructose to glucose in a meal

3. The presence of polyols (sugar alcohols, like sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, etc.)

4. The presence of fructans (especially short-chain mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides, like Inulin, FOS, etc.)

Introducing Heart Healthy Foods

The heart is the most vital organs for humans. A healthy heart will result in quality of life better. However, not everyone has a heart condition that functions perfectly. Unhealthy life can trigger a variety of diseases. Heart disease most commonly found are coronary heart disease, chest pain (angina)

Coronary heart disease is heart disease which many sufferers the most. This disease attacks the blood vessels and can cause heart attacks. A heart attack caused by clogged arteries that impede the distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the heart. However, not all heart disease caused by blood vessel problems.

The heart that beats too slow (below 60 beats per minute) is called bradyarrhythmias. While above 100 beats per minute is called tachyarrhytmias. All the disorders are usually caused by heart disease and usually are inborn.

Although many kinds of heart disease, but particularly heart disease caused by blockage of blood vessels can be overcome or avoided by eating foods containing fiber. Another thing that is also important as lowering blood cholesterol levels is by exercising regularly.

Heart Healthy Foods – What Is It?

Various studies show, eat fiber foods can reduce levels of bad cholesterol (low densy lipoprotein / LDL) in blood. If the blood levels of LDL in the low, heart health becomes more secure.

Oats or wheat fiber is soluble fiber that can lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) without lowering HDL (good cholesterol). That way, oatmeal is good for diabetics because someone who has consumed this fiber, the sugar level is low.

High LDL is the main cause of increased cases of coronary heart disease. Although pharmacological therapy more quickly to lower LDL, with wheat cereal consumption is more healthy and without side effects. But it takes time.

Oatmeal is a good source of nutrition because it contains vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, and magnesium. Oatmeal also can be a good source of protein for the body.

Other fiber sources, in addition to wheat, can also be found in avocado, grapes, apples, berries and citrus fruits. Avocados contain antioxidants glutathione and monounsaturated fats. This substance is useful to neutralize free radicals and fat, both of which are destructive in the body.

Grapes contain flavonoids, such as catechins quercentin and can prevent bad cholesterol oxidation reactions, accelerate blood flow, and reduce the formation of plaque in blood vessels. Grapes also contain vitamin C that can neutralize free radicals.

An apple contains a lot of pectin, the type of fiber can help lower blood cholesterol levels. Pectin binds cholesterol that comes from food, such as from milk, meat, and eggs.

Green leafy vegetables are also rich in flavonoids, such as bean leaf, papaya leaf, leaves, cassava, sweet potato leaves.

Soy proteins also contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are healthy food ingredients to the heart. A diet rich in soy protein can lower triglycerides, which helps prevent cardiovascular disease and keep the heart to stay strong and healthy. Soy protein is also good for those who have high cholesterol because the protein-rich soy poliunsaturated fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Health experts recommend, not just the food that must be observed in maintaining heart health, exercise regularly, not smoking, and controlling stress are a few things. So, keep your heart health.

Budgie Diet: How To Make It Healthy

If you love your budgie, then you want them to have a long and happy life by your side. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of confusion and ignorance around what makes a healthy budgie diet. And, as we all know, a balanced and nutritious diet is essential to staying healthy.

When you’re a new budgie owner, it’s easy to get the impression that all a budgie needs is bird seed. After all, everyone knows that you feed birds on seed, and nobody at the pet shop will tell you any different.

The truth is that budgies need much the same diet as people to be healthy. Where we eat wheat, corn or potatoes, they can have seed or pellets instead, but they need a good mix of fresh fruits and vegetables, just like we do.

In the wild budgies feed almost exclusively on ripening grass seeds and wheat germ, but ripening seeds have a different nutritional content than fully mature ones. Green seeds are low in fat, and packed full of vitamins and minerals, but once they’re ripe they’re full of fats and low in nutrients.

What makes things worse is that seeds lose even more of their nutritional value during transport and storage. Your budgie’s seed mix might say it’s got added vitamins, but that just means they’re sprayed on the outside of the seeds, the part your budgie peels off before eating.

Without fruits and vegetables, to accompany their seed, budgies quickly become malnourished, and sadly many birds each year die painfully from diseases that are caused by a simple lack of vitamins.

A slightly healthier alternative to seed is pellets. Bird food manufacturers have designed these pellets to have much the same nutritional content as your budgie would get in the wild. That’s why many bird experts can be heard fanatically preaching that everyone should switch their birds to pellets.

It’s true that pellets are healthier than seed, but they’re not a cure all. A budgie which is fed on pellets still needs fresh fruits and vegetables – after all, you wouldn’t eat only breakfast cereal because the manufacturer has added extra vitamins to it; it wouldn’t be healthy.

And the truth is that many budgies fed on seed live long and healthy lives, because their overall diet is well balanced.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the deeper the colour the more nutritious they are for your bird. The deep colours of apple peel, broccoli and spinach mean they’re packed full of good stuff. Apple flesh, grapes and lettuce, on the other hand, aren’t that healthy.

It can be difficult to get your budgie started on their greens, especially if they’ve been fed exclusively on seed for years. But your patience and perseverance will be worth the effort when your pet lives ten or fifteen years, instead of the five years the average budgie lives.

If you’re having trouble getting your budgie to eat their greens, you can give them a vitamin supplement in the short term. These supplements can be added to your budgie’s water, however budgies that are on seeds instead of pellets don’t drink too much, because they get their water from their food.

The lesson to take away from this is that variety and balance in their diet are essential to your budgie’s well being, just as they are to yours.

Building Lean Muscle – The Right Way To Do It

In order to build lean muscle, you need to do three things very well:

1. You need to eat right and get enough carbs and protein in your diet

2. You need to do some kind of cardio training

3. You need to do some kind of strength training

Having the right diet

Okay so first things first, you want to be getting in about 5-6 small meals a day, this is very important.

There is nothing but good that can come from this, trust me. Eating 3 large meals a day spikes your body’s sugar levels and also interferes with your metabolism.

On the other hand, eating 5-6 small meals a day will increase your nutrition oxidation levels, which just means at absorbing nutrients and burning fat.

Another very important thing is just how much you take in of a nutrient. The best nutrient setup as far as ratio goes is 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates and 20% healthy fats. For good sources of protein, I recommend eating lots of lean meats and wild fish.

Dairy products like eggs and milk are also an excellent sources of protein but some people are allergic to dairy without even knowing it so you might want to find that out first.

Good sources of carbs are foods like wheat and brown rice. Whole wheat bread and wheat pasta are also great sources of complex carbs.

Complex carbs are better for you because they take longer to digest and so they are less likely to be stored as fat.

Strength Training

For strength training you can keep it very simple by doing push ups, crunches and pull-ups. These are all compound exercises that workout a whole range of muscles instead of just one muscle. The more muscles you work out, the more fat burning hormones your body releases that burn fat all day round even when you aren’t working out.

Strength training is crucial in building lean muscle because it creates the perfect metabolic environment for building lean muscle; the faster your metabolism, the easier you can go about building muscle fast.

Cardio

Cardio is where the calorie burning really gets done and in order to be building lean muscle in the right way, you need to be burning more calories than you consume daily and cardio is perfect for this.

For cardio I recommend doing a 15-30 minute jog. If a jog tires you out within the first 5 minutes, you should do a brisk walk instead.

The Ideal Cat Food for Your Feline Friend

Cats are some of the most amazing animals to have as pet; they are playful and jovial animals that can’t get enough petting and attention. However, when it comes to feeding cats a number of pet owners are often confused about the type of food that would be ideal for their pet. It is important to feed your cat a proper diet to protect it from dietary related problems such as obesity and stomach upsets such as diarrhea and constipation caused by dehydration.

Salmon based pet food products are ideal for adult cats. These foods are ideal for cats, because they offer salmon which is a rich-calorie food and contains adequate levels of saturated fats. These types of food products also contain fish meal, maize gluten, rice, wheat, maize, beet pulp, poultry fat, chicken liver digest and minerals. It is important to understand that different salmon based cat food products offer varied nutritional levels, and it is up to you to go through the listed ingredients in order to identify the best one for your pet.

Cat foods composed of duck and chicken are also ideal pet food products for adult cats. They contain large percentages of the vital nutrients that are required for your pet’s growth and development. Some of the other ingredients found in duck and chicken based pet food products include wheat, yeast, fish meal, salt, rice, maize and poultry fat.

Other cat foods which are ideal for mature cats are those which contain turkey and cranberry. These products offer the nutrients required by your cat and they are ideally fed to cats over the age of seven. Other constituent ingredients found in these products include hydrolyzed chick meal, chicken liver digest, poultry fat, salts, minerals, maize, rice and wheat. Pet food products ideal for kittens should ideally contain adequate levels of chicken content, vitamins and calcium needed for proper growth and development.

It is important to get advice from your vet, if your cat is particularly sensitive to what it eats. Kittens should also be on balanced diets to help them acquire all the nutrients they need for proper growth and development. It is also important to get cat food brands specially formulated for kittens. It is also wise to find out from a vet which cat food products are ideal to feed an ill pet. Sick pets, just like human beings, require special diets to help them recuperate and gain back their strength during that period.

Breaded Catfish Cooked Up Perfectly In A Toaster Oven

I absolutely love deep fried catfish but I know it is not the healthiest option for me. I know nothing can actually replicate that dish without frying, but I have come up with a baked version that is close. I have tried this many different ways and have finally come up with a version that I think is fantastic. Instead of using white breadcrumbs I use a combination of both whole wheat breadcrumbs and ground cashews. I cook them up quickly and perfectly in my toaster oven.

I found that a bread crumb breading by itself is too dry unless it is fried. Cashews have a very buttery texture and taste, yet the flavor is mild enough to not compete with the flavor of the catfish. I also find that in the absence of that unique deep-fried taste, spices are a very welcome addition. Obviously, the spices don’t make the fish taste fried, but it adds a beautiful flavor that leaves you satisfied so that you forget all about the fried version.

Ingredients

4 catfish filets, about 4 ounces each

1 large chicken egg

1 tablespoon of whole milk

3/4 cup of fresh whole wheat bread crumbs (you can buy these or use your food processor to make them from fresh bread)

1/4 cup of finely ground cashews (use your food processor or a heavy rolling-pin to grind the cashews)

1/4 teaspoon of ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon of ground cumin

1 teaspoon of dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon of dried garlic granules

1/4 teaspoon of dried onion granules

1/4 teaspoon of paprika

1/4 teaspoon of sea salt

1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Heat your toaster oven to 450 degrees F.

Put the egg and milk into a shallow bowl or dish. Beat well and set aside.

Put the breadcrumbs, ground cashews, allspice, cumin, thyme, garlic, onion, paprika, salt and pepper in another shallow bowl or dish. Mix together well.

Pat dry the catfish filets, then dunk them in the beaten egg mixture. Move them to the bread crumb and cashew mixture and flip them around to coat both sides. Place the breaded catfish onto a parchment lined baking sheet that will fit into your toaster oven. Bake in your toaster oven until the fish is opaque throughout and the breading is golden brown; this should take about 10 minutes. Serve with hot sauce.

The Best Toaster Oven For Baking Catfish

You will need a toaster oven that is capable of reaching 450 degrees F to properly brown the fish, without having hotspots that will burn parts of it. Caeliac Disease – Gluten Free – Is it a Life Sentence Or Happy Discovery?

Having found out that you suffer from Celiac’s disease, you have two choices; view the disease as a life sentence or as a brave new world. At first it can be overwhelming. The title itself is tough. Celiac disease, like you’ve just become a leper from Stephen Donaldson’s novel, Lord Foul’s Bane, and you will no longer be viewed as “normal”. I doubt people will start to pay your bills for you, to avoid having you come into their part of town, but people will start to treat you differently depending on how you manage the disease.

As much as you will have to be hyper aware of the words, gluten free, wheat, rye, oats and barley free. It’s possibly a better idea not to mention these too early on in your initial diagnosis as this will be sure to get you those looks you are trying to avoid.

So what is celiac disease or gluten intolerance and how will it affect your life?

Celiac disease is the inablity of the body to convert proteins found in foods that contain wheat, barley, rye and oats. However, the consensus is still out on whether oats is actually a problem or not. Most Celiacs choose to leave oats out of their diets and Celiac societies tend to recommend leaving oats out too. If you do this you can substitute porridge made from oats with rice cereal instead.

The four common ingredients; wheat, barley, rye and oats are found in most foods, except fresh fruit, vegetables and milk products which are usually free from added ingredients and that’s where things start to get tricky.

Companies modify milk, butter, margarine, dairy and many other products. The modifications are done to make the food more attractive to the consumers and not often for an improvement to our diets. By modifying food items they often add gluten into naturally free from gluten products. Silly isn’t it? And, that’s where the Celiacs life gets complicated. Try reading the ingredients on every packet, of every item, every time you go shopping and you will start to understand what a Celiac must go through.

Once you start to understand what products are gluten free and those that are not, the task of deciding what to eat becomes a lot easier. If you have the opportunity to spend some time with a dietician then do so. They are trained to deal with gluten intolerance and can design a diet that will take in all the necessary food groups and help you to obtain the vitamins and minerals you need to once again live a healthy, stress free life.

Gluten intolerance or Celiacs disease is not a life sentence and the more you dig for information, the more you will find that there are many support groups out there to help you get back to a normal life. Once you start eating a gluten free diet the feeling of wellness itself will give you the energy to cope with the changes in your lifestyle that will have to be made.

Homemade Parrot Treats

Commercially available parrot treats look very appealing, but unfortunately they are usually designed to appeal to the parrot owner more than to the parrot’s nutritional needs. Very often they contain too much artificial colorings and preservatives.

But the good news is you don’t have to depend on pet shop supplies to give your bird healthy, tasty treats.

Parrot treats can be very simple, like fresh millet, dried fruit on a skewer or pieces of fresh coconut hanging from the cage (don’t overdo the coconut though as it is still a nut and as such contains more fat than fruits), or require a little more preparation. Here are some more elaborate ideas of homemade parrot food your pet bird will probably love:

Parrot treat recipes:

1. Fruity muffin

  • 1 pack Hodgeson Mills Corn Muffin Mix with whole wheat flour (has lower sodium than Jiffy’s)
  • 3 eggs (with their shells)
  • 1 mashed ripe banana
  • 1 mashed and peeled yam
  • 1 chopped and seeded apple
  • 2 cups pitted fruit (peaches, apricots, papaya, nectarines)
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup varied nuts and seeds (almonds, pumpkin seeds, …)
  • 1 jar of fruity baby food

Mix everything and bake on 350°F for about 30 to 40 minutes. Be careful to let it cool before feeding a piece to your parrot.

NOTE: You can use 2 cups of corn meal flour, 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 1 tablespoon of baking powder instead of the muffin mix if you prefer.

2. Spicy muffin

  • 1 pack Hodgeson Mills Corn Muffin Mix with whole wheat flour
  • 3 eggs (with their shells) 1 mashed and peeled sweet potato
  • 2 cups fresh vegetables: spinach, broccoli, green peppers, peas
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 1/4 cup seeded jalapeno peppers
  • 1/2 cup carrot juice
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 jar of veggie baby food

Here again, mix everything and bake for about 30 to 40 minutes.

TIP: You can cut individual portions and freeze them and then thaw one daily or every other day.

Why a spicy muffin? Well, parrots have a less developed a sense of smell and taste than we do, so using spices in moderation can be a good little extra, and you have no doubt already noticed that your bird sometimes soaks some of his food in water to bring out the flavor. Chilies are also rich in vitamins A and C so it’s healthy too not just tasty!

Fun and training

Part of the treat is the way to find the food: having your bird forage for it will make it just that much more fun. You can also make the treat playful: for instance romaine lettuce does not have a high nutritional value but can be used to wrap other foods for fun foraging rumps and to entice your bird to try new fruits or veg.

As its name implies, a treat is something out of the ordinary, a special extra not to be substituted to a regular diet. Which makes it great as a training reward. For training reinforcement you can use seeds (if your bird has a balanced parrot diet rather than mostly seeds), low fat cheese (many a parrot are cheese junkies, so that’s a safe way to let them indulge from time to time), or pieces of spicy muffin.

Attention Attention Candida Sufferer Eat These Foods

In the article entitled “”Attention! Attention! Candida Sufferer Avoid These Foods”, in which we discussed foods that promote unhealthy Candida levels, we learnt that Candida starts to develop in the gut as a fungus and that it creates an environment that is ideal for its rampant growth.

We have learned that the environment in which Candida thrives is acidic in nature and this acidity inhibits the bodies ability to absorb vitamins and minerals and it limits enzyme production of digestive proteins. Limited enzyme production leads to symptoms of indigestion, e.g. wind or gas problems are evident, bloated or swollen intestines are evident, increased acid levels and sensitivities to certain types of foods are evident.

It is evident that in order to maintain a healthy body, free of an overgrowth of Candida, the foods that are eaten must be foods that promote healthy Candida levels in the body.

The ideal diet for those suffering from Candida Yeast overgrowth is to eat a diet high in fiber and protein complimented by some complex carbohydrates and a small amount of fresh fruits. For example, the daily intake should be approximately:

65% High fiber foods, such as steamed vegetables: The best choices are broccoli, celery, radishes, asparagus, onions, garlic, ginger root, cabbage, turnips and kale. Raw garlic and onions act as natural anti-fungal substances and should be eaten as much as possible.

20% High protein foods, such as: fish chicken, duck, nuts, seeds and eggs.

10% Complex carbohydrates: rice, beans and oats.
