How to Find Studs Behind a Tile Wall

Home improvement projects can be satisfying, inexpensive, creative and massively frustrating. Almost every wall project begins with the words “find a stud.” If you live in a newer or amateur-remodeled home, this is a call to arms. Technically, studs upright planks that support the wall are placed sixteen inches apart. This is not always the case. Finding wall studs behind drywall is hard enough. If you are looking for studs behind tile, you may be in for a long day. Gather your tools, take a deep breath and make sure that the beer or lemonade is iced and waiting.

Instructions

1. Measure in sixteen inches from a corner. Sweep the stud finder slowly along the tiled wall until it indicates a stud. This probably won’t work, but it’s best to try the simplest methods first.

2. Go to the room that backs up against the tiled wall, if there is one. Measure 16 inches in from the nearest shared perpendicular wall, and run the stud finder over the wall in slow sweeps. If you find a stud, measure from there to the perpendicular wall. Go back to the tiled room and measure out that exact measurement from the shared perpendicular wall.

3. Measure out from a perpendicular wall in 16-inch increments, until you find one that lands on a stripe of grout instead of a tile. Put the 1/8-inch glass or tile bit on your power drill and drill though the grout. If you find a stud, you should be able to measure 16 inches to either side and find another one.

4. Bend your heavy-gauge wire and stick it through the hole you drilled in the grout. Poke around along the back of the wall to either side of the hole to see if you can find a stud. If you do, pinch the wire between your thumb and forefinger, right at the hole. Draw the wire out and lay it along the wall, with your pinching fingers held at the hole. The stud should be at the other end of the wire. Mark that spot with a marker.

5. Drill a hole into the stud. Measure 16 inches to either side of that stud, and you should find another one.

6. Fill in any pilot holes in the grout by squirting silicon caulk into them. Let the caulk dry for 2 to 3 hours and then use a craft stick to apply a little matching grout over the caulk.

Tips & Warnings

Two people with two stud finders will have a better chance and get less frustrated then one person hunting alone.

Never just start drilling holes in the tile randomly. You’ll be tempted, but you’ll also be sorry.

Efflorescence on Exterior Concrete Wall

Efflorescence is a very common problem with poured concrete foundations. The white powdery substance you see along the outside of your basement wall is efflorescence and indicates moisture is in contact with the masonry. Don’t worry this unattractive build up isn’t hazardous; efflorescence is simply salt and can be easily removed with efflorescence removers or other cleaning techniques.

This does not necessarily mean that intrusion will occur. We recommend checking gutters, downspout drain lines for proper operation. Efflorescence is found on many homes without water intrusion occurring inside the home. But, it should alert you to the possibility that future steps may be needed.

What is happening, water infiltrates the block or the concrete wall and as water evaporates from the surface the mineral deposits are left behind in the form of white substance. Although efflorescence is generally a visual problem, if the efflorescence crystals grow inside and under the surface, it can cause spalling of the foundation wall, which is when the surface peels, pops out or flakes off. The salt pushes from the inside out and can eventually cause crumbling and deterioration.

Efflorescence, water-soluble salts come from many possible sources. First of all; there must be water present to dissolve and transport the salts. Groundwater is often a source of efflorescence. For water to carry or move the salts to the surface there must be channels through which to move and migrate. The more dense the material more difficult for the water to transport salts to the surface. On the other hand, the more porous the material, the greater the ease with which salts are transported and deposited. Salt-bearing water, on reaching the surface of a structure, air evaporates to deposit the salt.

When humidity is low, the water may evaporate before reaching the surface of the structure, leaving the salt deposit beneath the surface, and unseen. When the humidity is high, water evaporation is slower allowing more opportunity for salted to be deposited.

Since humidity has a definite effect on whether or not the salts appear, it can be assumed that efflorescence is a seasonal problem. The intensity of efflorescence increases after rainy winter seasons, decreases in spring, and by summer has practically disappeared. This cycle may repeat for months or years, but generally the intensity of the efflorescence decreases in all but very extreme cases, and by about the third year it should be practically eliminated.

Again I repeat, this does not necessarily mean that intrusion will occur. Checking the exterior for grade issues and low spots, ensuring the proper operation of downspouts and that water is being directed away from the foundation may help prevent efflorescence on the exterior of your foundation wall.

The surface coating has been scientifically tested to with stand the harshest weather conditions. The canvas can be smooth or faux finish texture. Aluminum is a lightweight metal with a bright silvery luster. It is strong and resistant to the elements which make it perfect for outdoor use.

For contemporary or modern you can select art deco, pop art or abstract. Whichever style you are certain to find a variety of colors, shapes and sizes to fulfill your needs.

By my pool area I have hung upon the walls a piece of art of a beach front scene. There are sea gulls flying around with the view of rushing waves. Whenever I am gazing at it I seem to be transported into total relaxation. Around my fence I have outdoor wall art of hummingbirds feeding, cardinals bathing and blue jays in flight. Last week I added a small picture of a fury mother and baby squirrel scampering up a tree with an acorn in the mom’s mouth.

If you’re seeking that special gift, this can also be your answer. I have a good friend that moved away and I had a piece of art custom made for her. From a photograph a company was able to replicate her family standing around her old house. To this day whenever we talk there is always a comment about that painting and how much it meant to her.

As you can see, your only limitation for this decor is your imagination. Become creative let loose and you will be inspired to keep adding more as your landscape becomes more unique and inspiring.

Make a Small Room Look Larger With Art Wall Decals

If you have a small place there is no reason to stare at plain white walls. Decorating the walls in a smaller living space is often challenging but makes all the difference when creating a cozy space. No matter how small the room is, if it is warm and inviting, it will make friends and family feel right at home. Here are a few tips to make a room look larger with art wall decals.

Choose the right pattern or theme to create the illusion of a bigger space. There are literally a multitude of themes and designs to choose from when decorating the walls in your place. Choose light-colored backgrounds that match with colors in your decals to coordinate the room colors. For example, nature designs with earth colors of green and brown would look good on a wall painted in tan or butterscotch. Match accessory colors to accent colors in the design to complete the look.

Keep the space open by careful furniture placement. Placing furniture in an open design makes a room look bigger. A simple couch and chair in a matching solid color with an accent rug or small table makes a cozy living area for sitting and relaxing with friends.

Choose a pattern or design of art wall decals to match the color and furnishings of the room. Some people like a nature theme with trees and or a modern Art Deco look with odd shapes or bold designs. Large patterns are fine with minimal furnishings and can become the focal point of the room. Place a couple of lovely decorative mirrors where they will reflect the wall scenes to make it appear as if the scene continues into another room adding to the illusion of more space.

Additional decorating tips:

Let functional spaces do double duty if possible. A bookshelf placed in a corner can double as a place to store small trinkets and knick-knacks without cluttering up the space. The right light fixtures can add depth to a room when placed close to a mirror or other reflective surface, the brighter the light the larger the room looks.

Reasons to decorate with decals:

· Decals are not only stylish and attractive, but create a look that is all your own.

· Economical way to decorate because the designs can be removed when you decide it’s time for a change.

· Create a focal point to draw attention away from problem areas such as uneven walls or oddly-shaped corners.

Wall decorations such as decals, stickers or stencils make a space unique and express the owner’s personal style. They are suitable for just about any room in your home, from bedroom to kitchen; decals are a great way to decorate the way you like. Even if your landlord will not let you paint, there is no reason to have boring white walls when art wall decals are so easy to use and remove when you move to a new place.

Above all, choose a Mirror which motivates you and makes you feel happy. Shopping Offline can be time taking and difficult. Many online shopping sites are offering numerous mirrors which can be sorted easily. So, it is advised to Shop Wall Mirrors online.

How to Wallpaper Over a Brick or Cement Block Wall

The problems of concealing grouting and rough surfaces are easily overcome. Lining paper, if properly applied, will stretch over and hide the rough patches and the effect can be completed by using a heavy or embossed wallpaper.

This technique also applies to walls built of cement blocks. If you are building with brick or cement block and know that you want to wallpaper certain walls, ask your builders to apply the mortar so that you have a nice flat surface, rather than raking out the joints. With existing walls, the secret is in preparing the raw surface.

These are the tools you’ll need:-

A long table or bench, a trough, sponge or foam paste applicator, scissors, soft brush for smoothing wallpaper on to wall, a ruler, plumb line, razor for cutting.

A paint sealer is applied to dry any moisture from the wall, then a latex based wallpaper liquid size. A well soaked pre-pasted wallpaper lining will be just sufficient to soften the size and bond the lining firmly to the wall so that when wallpaper is pasted over, it won’t weaken in any way.

The same principle can even be applied if you are papering over rough-caste walls (walls that have been plastered and raked or scrolled upon when wet). If your brick wall has an extremely rough and raised surface it will have to be plastered over prior to wall-papering.

Here is how it’s done:-

1. Prior to start working on an absorbent raw wall, you’re first step is to seal and size the wall. Coat it with a paint sealer and leave to dry overnight. Next apply a latex based wallpaper liquid size; this is especially good on absorbent surfaces. This takes about an hour to dry. If time is short you can apply two coats leaving an hour between coats, instead of the over- night sealer.

2. Apply pre-pasted lining paper. Soak it in a trough to soften and roll out to arm’s length. Fold over and back half-way, forming pleats to the end of the roll.

3. Holding the top piece of paper in one hand, and pleats in the other, stretch the first pleat along the wall and flatten out with sponge. Stretch next fold and flatten and so on to the end of the roll.

4. To paper around a corner, leave 25 mm (one inch) overlap and “butt” the adjacent strip of paper on to it.

5. Repeat soaking and folding procedure and bring next roll of paper lining overlapping approximately 6 mm (quarter of an inch) onto the first. By having paper on paper you will prevent the joins from edging into the grooves between bricks.

6. Leave lining paper to dry overnight. As it does so it will tighten and stretch out over grooves and rough patches on the wall surface.

7. Before applying wallpaper, coat again with the latex based wallpaper liquid size as added insurance that the lining paper has sealed properly and tightened on to the wall

8. The type of wallpaper used is important. It should be embossed or a heavy natural weave to ensure that the imprint of the design is not lost when pasted on.

9. Hang your selected wallpaper vertically in the normal way.

Sit back and admire your masterpiece.

How to Reinforce a Stone Foundation Wall With a New Concrete Wall

Many older homes have foundations made of field stone that may over time have sagged or bowed from the elements pushing on the stones. Since no mortar as we know it today was used, the stones can easily shift. If there has been a serious total collapse of the stone wall, total replacement is necessary. If the problem is less severe, a new concrete reinforcing wall may be in order. If you have an earthen basement floor the job is even easier. Starting on the inside of the basement you must first excavate a trench alongside the existing wall to install a new footing for the reinforcing wall. I would make the footing at least two feet wide but three feet wide is much better. Make the footing one foot deep. The top of the new footing should match the bottom of the stone wall and the new floor will sit on top of the footing. Be careful not to disturb the soils under the stones. There will be no footing under a stone wall. Once you are done excavating, form the footing and install the reinforcing bars. Use at least 5/8′ diameter bars. Run them the full length of the footing and in a three foot wide footing there should be three continuous bars. Now take pieces cut four feet long and bend a one foot bend at one end making an ell shape. These bars will be tied to the inner and outer most footing rebar to form two rows of dowels running the full length of the footing, no more the thirty-two inches apart. When the footing is poured you will see only the vertical part of the bars sticking out. Once the footing concrete is dry, strip all the forms leaving no wood behind for termites to latch on to for dinner.

Now using the same size rebar, install horizontal bars starting three inches up from the footing and place one every twelve inches running the full length of the new wall. Do this on both rows of dowels. These when completed are called wall mats. Using some small scraps of rebar, tie them with wire between the two mats to keep them separated when you pour the heavy concrete. The new wall thickness will depend upon how thick your stone wall is and how badly bowed the stone wall is. My last wall was basically twenty four inches thick but twelve inches thick is a minimum you should build. Your rebar wall mats want to be as close to three inches from both faces of the wall as possible. The inside mat may be a bit more depending on the amount of bow in the stone wall. I used Symonns concrete form panels from my rental store for ease of forming the new wall but you can also build the forms out of wood. The advantage of concrete form panels is they come in all sizes of heights and widths, have clips for easy fastening, have pre-made anchors and so on. You must remember that this is a one sided form. The toughest type by far to build. You must brace it to death and then add some more braces to keep it from moving under the weight of wet concrete. Installation of what is called a whaler brace will keep the forms from bowing out but add kickers galore. On concrete pour day you will need some extra help. Pouring through a basement window is no joke as the guys inside cannot see the guy outside in the ready mix truck.

One man has to stay outside and yell orders through the window. Faster, slower, more, too wet and so on. Inside one man has to do nothing but watch the forms. If something moves he has to immediately stop the pour. Being buried under wet concrete and smashed form panels is no joke. Another person has to vibrate the forms with a mechanical vibrator to assure there are no voids in the concrete. Yet another person can tap the forms with a hammer to assure there is concrete in all the spaces and watch down through the top of the form to assure they are filling up as level as possible. This eliminates putting too much pressure in one spot of the forms at once. Excess pressure can cause the forms to fail. Wet concrete exerts what is called hydraulic pressure sideways against the form work and can amount to tons of pressure. I have seen forms fail that were blown a hundred feet away from the work site. Depending upon how thick your new wall is a two day wait for form removal is more than enough. Twenty four hours is better still. Any spilled concrete will get super hard and make form removals that much harder if you let the concrete sit too long. Again strip all remnants of wood from the work. Back fill the footing and level the floor area to prep it for the new basement floor.

Do Wall Clocks Last?

It is important that you take your wall clock to a shop that has the proper tools to service your clock. Clocks can be victims of poor quality repair by “benevolent” repairmen, who mean well, but do more harm than good to the clock. It is not uncommon to pick out an under-qualified repair shop, or a shop that does not use, and install brand new factory, genuine parts, having the clock perform worse when you get it back.

In order to have your clock running in top shape, it is of much significance that you have it serviced by a shop that has the proper tools to do the job right, and to be dedicated to do the job well.

Wall clocks with pendulums are mechanical clocks and the movement of the pendulum regulates the time. If the pendulum does not swing evenly, the clock will not keep accurate time. The pendulum is attached to a loop of wire called the crutch. In order to fix the swing of the wall clock, the crutch would need to be adjusted.

Adjusting Pendulum

1. With your hand, stop the pendulum on the clock.

2. Wait for the pendulum to come to rest under the center of the clock.

3. Move the pendulum to the right until it makes a clicking sound, then

move it to the left until it makes another clicking sound.

4. Notice how far the pendulum is moved in each direction before it makes

a clicking sound. It will click sooner on either side.

5. Bend the crutch slightly toward the side of the wall clock that clicked

first when the pendulum was moved. Do not bend the crutch too much,

as the wire is delicate and can break easily.

6. Restart the pendulum, and watch how it swings. If the pendulum does

not swing evenly from side to side, stop the pendulum again, and

readjust the crutch.

Note: If the pendulum hit’s the wall when it swings, the wall clock will not keep accurate time. The pendulum must not hit the clock. If so, hang the wall clock in a slightly different position, to adjust the swing.

There are a variety of wall clocks of different shapes and sizes, and unique in their style. Some of the different kinds of clocks are contemporary, antique, wooden, metal, glass, outdoor and novelty.

Another kind, or style, of clock is the musical wall clock. This is the clock that marks the hours of the day with a musical tune. The tune is played from a spiked cylinder either on bells, organ pipes, bellows, cobs, and even dulcimer strings. Musical clocks were mainly used in churches, but were also used to mark time for the public and to tell the farmers in the field when it was sunset, dawn, and lunch time.

No matter what kind of musical clock, whether it be a turret/church clock, a bracket clock, a carriage clock, a long case clock, an organ clock, or any other clock, the same basic system of how the clock plays its tune is the same. It all revolves around a large cylinder, which is spiked and pushes the relevant hammer and combs.

In conclusion, no, wall clocks do not last forever, but these clocks can last a long time, if we take care of them, and have them serviced at least once a year for maintenance at a reputable clock shop.

Matte Or Glossy Finish For Your Wall Quotes?

Wall quotes are decal sheets of vinyl that are applied to walls or other surfaces that are flat and hard. They are to be used as a decorative element in a room and consist of stylish quotes presented in equally stylish lettering along with occasional graphical art. They are ideal for home decoration because they are inexpensive, fairly easy to apply and removable. When selecting a wall quote for one of your rooms, one of the choices you will face is whether to select a vinyl sheet that has a matte or glossy finish.

To get a good idea of the difference between these two types of vinyl decals, look at the matte and glossy finish found on photographs – the effect is very similar. In a nutshell, the main difference is that glossy vinyl will more so reflect the light while the matte vinyl has more of a textured finish and will not shine so much when under lighting. Most people end up using matte finish since it gives a more natural hand painted look.

The choice will come down to what you want to create in the room and what is already present in terms of decoration. The choice of the quote itself will also have an impact on the choice of matte vs glossy. A flamboyant quote may benefit from a glossy treatment while a more zen and introspective quote could well be served by a matte look. It’s up to you to decide and there are many practical variables to take into consideration.

Matte vinyl usually has an adhesive stick that removes itself easily from walls. This is true even if the wall quote has been staying on that surface for many years. At the same time, it may be harder to apply matte vinyl to walls that have slight textures to them. Unless you have a perfectly flat and smooth wall, matte vinyl might not be the way to go. In a similar fashion and for similar reasons, if applied outdoors this kind of vinyl may only last for a few years. They will work well on glass, mirrors and tile, however.

Glossy vinyl has more adhesive power than the other one so it will stick better to walls that have some texture but it will also be harder to remove the wall quotes if they have been staying on a surface for some time. Depending on the quality of the paint on the wall, it may come off as the vinyl is removed.
