Why Humor is Essential in Animated Explainer Videos

Unlike a ‘real’ video format, through which ‘real’ people could portray light as well as intense human emotions with equal magnificence, the animated video format could, at best, be used to imitate real human emotions, essentially in a fun & cheerful way. This is primarily so, because the default and prominent attribute of animation as a communication technique, irrespective of its purpose of use, is light-heartedness. And although animated characters could represent human beings (or human-like beings) in a video, they can’t replace them when it comes to showcasing real & deep emotions, that could charge or move the viewers. Thus, the only emotional appeal that particularly goes well with animated video-communication technique is humor.

The biggest advantage of using a character animated explainer video for communication is that it lets you present a visualization of your complex concept with the help of one or more personified characters. Since these characters are hand-drawn by a storyboard artist and could represent any imaginable (real/unreal, tangible/intangible) entity, there is an endless scope for creating unique character representations that are funny and lovable.

Also, since animation has motion and sound elements, the creative communication techniques, like ‘Exaggeration’, ‘Satire’, ‘Parody’ and others that trigger laughter, could be beautifully used to bring out visual humor through funny body language and/or facial expressions of the moving characters. Silent Humor

Silent Humor, in an animated explainer video is the ‘not-so-obvious’ kind of humor. One way of bringing out silent humor, is by creating only visual humor elements. Imagine, for example, a video frame that is being shared between a lead animated character and a supporting animated character. When you are viewing the video, although most of your attention would be on the lead character, the supporting character could still be animated to bring out humor through its body language or facial expressions. These kind of subtle humor elements give that ‘special effect’ or ‘magic touch’ to your animated video. Although the expressions or body language of the supporting characters would go with the flow of the script, still their humorousness is independent to themselves.

It often happens that when a humor element is not very obvious to every viewer, it makes it all the more engaging because then, the viewer automatically takes interest in interpreting this subtle humor, and in doing so, pays more attention while watching the video.

Humor acts as the glue that holds your viewers to watch your animated explainer video, till the very end. Therefore, when using an animated explainer video technique for marketing, make sure it does have some humor elements. How many? Well, that completely depends on your business entity type and it is up to you to decide.

I have often said that Duality is the very foundation of Creation. I say this because the concept of Duality simply means that one thing must have something else to compare itself to, otherwise there would be only one thing (“everything”). This may seem fairly obvious, but the actual depths of this insight are vital to understanding both yourself and reality.

Duality plays into everything…

Physically: Light/Dark, Soft/Hard, Visible/Invisible, Real/Unreal, Awake/Asleep, Living/Dead, Quiet/Loud, Past/The Future, etc.

Mentally: Anger/Love, Fear/Faith, Greed/Generosity, Wisdom/Foolishness, Sadness/Joy, Understanding/Confusion, etc.

The most important thing to remember is not “why duality exists” but rather that it does exist. You could question this, even go into great thought about each of the things that I have listed. You could delve into memory, or even read a book to validate this. Realize though, no matter how much you want to doubt that this is true…it will still remain true.

Duality, however, is not the only reason I am writing this. I am writing this as an attempt to understand the origin of this thing we call “Heaven” and “Hell”. Modern religion would state that Heaven and Hell are destinations after death. The pearly white gates in the clouds and the eternity of pain in the Lake of Fire (nice imagery, eh?)

Ignoring the assumptions of others, what then is Heaven and Hell? Where are these places? The answer lies in Duality.

Heaven and Hell are simply two sides of the same thing. The very concept of “God” is that God is everything…and therefore one thing. Putting this together, Heaven and Hell are just perception of God. To explain this a little better, let’s look at what we think Heaven and Hell are like.

Hell : Pain, Torture, Sorrow, Guilt, Punishment for “Sins”

Heaven : Peace, Love, Contentment, and Safety

Basically, Hell is reality without the presence of “God”, where Heaven is simply reality in complete connection to “God”.

Remembering who you are (see “A question worth asking…”), does this not mean that Heaven and Hell are entirely dependent on how you view reality? Everything that exists, exists in your mind…you have infinite freedom to view reality however you please. This alone gives you the keys to Heaven or Hell. Duality comes into play again here. As I mentioned in another writing, in Duality you can either move away from something or towards something..The argument could be made that you can go “sideways” but that would still mean moving “towards” one direction or “away” from another.

Knowing that you are “God”, this means that Heaven and Hell are perceptions of yourself. This also means that Heaven and Hell are not destinations after death…they are, in fact, right here and readily available to us (as everything else is)

To be yourself is Heaven, To attempt to be something else is Hell.

I stopped writing…

Why??? you may ask.

I couldn’t write without being my true self. I was in search of my core being. For most of my life, I spent validating who I was to others not having a voice. I was not accepting of my own authenticity. It felt good for the moment to be lost in someone else’s world. I showed up at events having an imposture syndrome, hiding my true gifts and talents. It wasn’t until a Small Group leader at my church asked me to lead the group. Say What??? Me? It felt unreal. In the past, I always felt most comfortable being in the background letting others go ahead of me. Although, I did not realize that I was already a leader. I was a mentor, a tutor, a mother, a sister, and an aunt. In these settings, giving the best of myself the way I knew how.

Being a leader taught me the importance of true leadership such as caring for others. Wanting to see individuals develop and grow to reach their true potential. Also, teaching them to value themselves to be effective leaders for others and their communities.

When I was able to be my authentic self this gave me a sense of peace. And by sharing my own story, people were able to see the real me.

Being the youngest of six siblings, I often listened intensely as my parents spoke about growing up, ‘back home,’ as they would call it coming from the Caribbean. The stories appeared so real you can almost see them in colour. Like the African folklore of ‘Anansi’ made into a children’s book about a spider which has quite a bit of wisdom turned into a lot of fun and laughter. My father knew all of them by memory. It was as if it happened yesterday. We can learn a lot from the ‘Elderly’. Some had to go to war to fight for their country, their rights and their freedom. My mom has since passed away and my father is now in his eighties, but boy did, they know how to tell great stories before the digital age set in. The simple times… weren’t they the best though? We hear about it but they got to experience it in real-time. Now, we are lost in a world of microwave popcorn and tv dinners. I’ll take a breakfast sandwich with my cell phone, please.

But, all stories are good stories. Yesterday, today and the ones we will tell tomorrow to our children and grandchildren. It is not so much about what you say that matters, it is how you helped others along the way. I now can write comfortably because I’m not starting from scratch. This time, I’m starting with my experiences and sharing my story with no expectation, except to share the lessons I’ve learned, hoping this will impact those who read it.

The 2nd conditional is one of the most important grammar topics in the ESL classroom. It is important because it is very common in conversation, and therefore must be learned by anyone who wants to speak and understand English.

One example of how this grammar structure is so popular is because it is in many English songs. Music is a great way to teach the 2nd conditional.

Here is a list of the tops 5 songs that use the 2nd conditional.

1. Beyonce – If I Were a Boy

This is the best song for many reasons. The entire song is a story about what it would be like if Beyonce were a boy. This is a great example of how the 2nd conditional is used for present unreal, or hypothetical situations. The lyrics use the modal would to show these hypothetical situations. The lyrics are also grammatically correct because they say “if I were a boy” and not “if I was a boy.” Using “were” is the correct structure, but is not always done in other songs.

As well, this song is new and popular. Students enjoy the lesson more when the music being used is something they actually know and like.

2. Barenaked Ladies – If I Had a Million Dollars

This is a song by a Canadian band that is not so popular around the world. However, it is excellent to teach the 2nd conditional. The reason it is so good is because it uses the grammar structure many times throughout the song. It shows the hypothetical situation of what the singer would do if he had a million dollars.

The song is also great because the singer talks about all the things he would buy, which helps to practice nouns. Students can learn about different types of cars, clothes, furniture, and more.

3. Katie Melua – If You Were a Sailboat

This song is like the first two because it has many examples of the grammar structure. Many times in the lyrics the singer uses “If you were a __________, I would___________.” This is why it is another excellent song to show how this conditional is for hypothetical situations.

4. Cher – If I Could Turn Back Time

This one is an old song, but still a classic. Students will probably have heard it before, so they will be able to relate to it and enjoy it. Although it is not as full of conditional sentences like the first three, the chorus gives good examples. It is also good because it uses “could”, which is not always that common. Students can practice the modal “could” as it is used for ability.

5. Lyle Lovett – If I Had a Boat

This song also has many examples of the 2nd conditional, so it makes for great practice. The added benefit here is that it is country music, which is often something ESL students do not know very much about. Therefore, it can also work well with a country music theme, as students can learn about a type of music that is very popular in many English speaking countries.

These songs are clearly not the only examples of the 2nd conditional in music. However, they are the 5 best, and can be used in the ESL classroom.

Fortnite runs with what’s known as the “Unreal Engine” – a piece of software developed by Epic Games to provide 3D gaming functionality to other developers.

Whilst the Unreal Engine element of the likes of Fortnite is generally kept out of view of the end user, it’s present and an essential part of the likes of Fortnite, PUBG and other leading games.

Unfortunately, it can be the case that the engine becomes damaged or corrupted, leading to strange errors – such as the “An Unreal Process Crashed: UE4-FortniteGame” error.

Cause

The cause of this error is down to the way in which Windows is unable to work with the UnrealEngine application, required by the likes of Fortnite to operate.

The problem is typically caused by issues with settings inside Windows (which can include the registry), or with integration problems with the likes of DirectX and other third party libraries.

To fix it, you need to first ensure that the Fortnite application is being operated correctly, and then that you’re able to clean up any potentially damaged settings in the likes of the Windows registry or other third party libraries.

Solution

1. Change Compatibility Settings For Fortnite

The first step is to ensure that you have the correct “compatibility” settings for Fortnite.

This is a standard Windows process, which basically allows any version of Windows after 7 to run “older” software (designed for the likes of XP etc).

• Press “Windows” + “E” keys on your keyboard
• Browse to “C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Fortnite/FortniteGame/Binaries/Win64”
• Scroll down to “FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe”
• Right-click
• Select “Properties”
• From the top “tabs”, select “Compatibility”
• Scroll down and check “Disable OnScreen Optimizations”
• Click OK
• Repeat this for any of the “FortniteClient… ” EXE files in the /Win64 folder
• Try the game again

2. Use Fortnite “Verify” Trick

The next step is to try using the “verify” tool from within the Epic Games launcher.

To do this is actually very simple:

• If you’ve exited the “File Explorer” part of Windows, load it up again
• Browse to the folder you were just at, and this time DELETE the “FortniteClient-Win64… ” file
• After doing this, click onto the “Epic Games Launcher” on your desktop
• Select “Fortnite”
• Next to the green “Launch” button, select the small cog icon
• From the dropdown, select “Verify”
• This will perform a scan of your game’s files
• Let the scan finish and perform any fixes
• Restart your PC and try the game again

3. Change Registry Setting Inside Windows

The Windows registry is a central database responsible for storing everything from your desktop wallpaper to which applications you’ve used recently.

As you use your system, various elements of this database can become damaged or corrupted – leading to errors such as the one you’re experiencing.

To fix this, you can actually go into it and change any settings that have been identified as causing the error:

• Press “Windows” + “S” keys on your keyboard
• Type “Rededit”, right-click on the first listing which appears and select “Run as Administrator”
• Browse to the following: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlGraphicsDrivers”
• Right-click and select “New” > “REG_DWORD”
• Change its name to “TdrDelay”
• Change its data to “00000008”
• Exit the registry editor
• Restart your PC
• Try the game again

If the above does not work, it suggests you have a problem with another aspect of the system.

Unfortunately, since the UnrealEngine is embedded within Fortnite, it’s not something you can manually uninstall without causing further issues.

If you wanted to try it, you may be best to reinstall the Fortnite game completely, or if you need further support, it would be recommended you talk to someone with specific knowledge/experience with your system.

There are several communities online which have the ability to do this – Reddit, SuperUser and MicrosoftAnswers being the more prolific.

If you use your computer for business, it’s probably going to be more effective to get someone to do the fix for you. Several providers on Fiverr offer reasonable prices, and of course, you have the local market who will be able to come and give direct support.
