Book Review – Influence (The Psychology of Persuasion ) Robert Cialdidi

“Influence”, the classic book on persuasion, explains the psychology of why people say “yes” – and how to apply these understandings.

Dr. Robert Cialdini is the seminal expert in the rapidly expanding field of influence and persuasion. His thirty-five years of rigorous, evidence-based research along with a three-year program of study on what moves people to change behavior has resulted in this highly acclaimed book. You’ll learn the six universal principles, how to use them to become a skilled persuader – and how to defend yourself against them. Perfect for people in all walks of life, the principles of “Influence” will move you toward profound personal change and act as a driving force for your success.

The book is divided into five main chapters: “Reciprocation”, “Commitment and Consistency”, “Social Proof”, “Liking”, “Authority” and “Scarcity”. Together these compose Cialdini’s “weapons of influence.” Each chapter is filed with loads of examples illustrating the breadth of these “weapons” in society.

For example, in the chapter on scarcity, the reader will be given examples ranging from collectible dollar bills, naughty kids, personal firearms, rebellious juries, the Soviet Union, a $3.3 million dollar TV showing of the Poseidon’s Adventure and more. At the end of each chapter, Cialdini teaches the reader to identify when each “weapon of influence” may be influencing our decision and how to react accordingly.

As I have said there are many great examples that make the point. How about a car salesman who sends out each month 13,000 cards every month to former customers with a card saying, “I like you”. Do people fall for that? The short answer is “Yes”!He made more than $200,000 a year selling cars.

Or how about the story of how the Chinese got the American prisoners in the Korean War to betray their country by setting them essay questions setting off the power of commitment and cosistency?.

My Verdict:

I have read many books on this theme and this, without doubt is the best and the basis of many others of the genre.

This book shows us how our minds are on auto-pilot for most of the time allowing us to be exploited by influence practitioners.

This book shows us how to use the techniques but also how to guard ourselves against others using it on us.

It can be hard going in places but generally reads well.

I give is 4.5/5 and highly recommend it.

Bad Credit Consolidation Loans: How To Find A Lending Company

Some of us have accumulated several debts over a period of time and find them difficult to re-pay. Well, getting bad credit consolidation loans is an excellent solution around this. There has been an increase in popularity with consolidation loans over the past few years and there is a surprisingly large number of lending institutions ready to offer a helping hand. The types of consolidation loans on offer are vast and flexible to each client.

Normally, the best way to pay off several debts is to find another loan with a lower interest rate. This effectively means that the balance of your debts will decrease while only a single lump sum will be due each month. It is not easy to find such loans, but with the proper research of the lending institutions in your locality, you can get one that will offer you very good rates.

It is important to find out if you can get a personal loan with your employer or a credit union. Most employers are willing to give their employees a total sum of the debts they owe as a lump sum loan. Typically, the interest rates charged are much less, but it is good to consult with the appropriate persons involved in order to get constructive feedback.

Most credit unions are willing to give loans for bad credit if your paycheck is set to pay it directly. Therefore, be on the look out for such loans as they can assist you to pay off those debts with high interest rates. They not only clear up your debts but they clear them quickly.

Several credit unions and banks are willing to offer loans off your car. This deal also includes those with bad credit hence if you own a car, it can be a very good way of clearing up your debts. But ensure that you keep your car safe and properly maintained, and it is wise to consider the year model because some banks can turn down a loan request if the car model is too old.

Therefore, the older the car, the more interest you will pay hence compare your existing debts with this kind of loan before allowing the bank to verify ownership and appraise the car.

It is also good to take a closer look at your home before going to apply for a loan. This is because home equity can get you a better, lower interest consolidation loan. Depending on the size of your equity, you can take out a loan that lasts as long as thirty years and this would be the most effective way of clearing all your bad credit. But with the housing and property market slump, this has become a diminishing source of loans.

Thus, with the several methods of clinching bad credit consolidation loans, it is wise for you to do comprehensive research to find the best rates available. Scout the internet because most reputed lending institutions have a web presence. Remember that debt consolidation does not actually lower the total amount of debt, it only changes the circumstances required to pay it hence making life a bit easier.

The Staff Ride

A staff ride, mostly rooted in army history, is an examination of the terrain of a battlefield, to help the staff (or military students) to understand how the terrain affected the decisions of officers and non-commissioned officers and their soldiers who attempted to implement a plan of battle. The tradition predates the western world, tracing back to Ancient Chinese General Sun Tzu in the year 500 BC. The ride part, today, mostly means by automobile, whereas it used to mean on horseback.

Today’s educational staff rides directly connect with army staff functions: verify terrain, determine the disposition of enemy soldiers, and spot weakness in enemy defenses prior to combat, so that the staff’s commander can have “eyes on target” information from his or her trusted staff prior to making a decision to turn a plan into a campaign (a coordinated maneuver of many tactical operations that complement each other during either an army or a Joint/Combined (multiple U.S. military forces/Allied forces) operation.

The staff members are usually hand-picked by the General or Flag Officer, quite often known to him or her in previous assignments, an admixture of personal loyalty within the best and brightest soldiers who are subject experts in each of the skill sets needed on staff. There can be civilian subject matter experts on the staff as well. Today, during combat, it would be both unnecessary and unusual for the General and his staff to get too close to the firing line. Today’s weapons are very accurate and today’s intelligence capabilities provide the General with most of the information that would be sought in a staff ride. During the American War Between the States, it was most common for one or more scouts to be sent out on horseback from the staff to reconnoiter (probe, explore, observe) the ground in front of the army’s present position and enemy movements upon that ground.

However, during maneuvers (movement of troops), the senses of the soldiers are heightened, and if significant weakness in enemy troop dispositions is found, their blood is up for combat! Such latitude of decision given to them by their general could kick in fast to enable them to exploit the enemy weakness and try to achieve a great gain. In other words, the army might quickly advance beyond what had been planned for that day’s combat, to attack and pursue enemy weakness. It could be an enemy trap, or the army might encounter enemy strength just beyond the weakness, or it could be true (the means to crush the enemy and drive his forces from the field).

It is during that heightened adrenaline, with a mixture of intelligence and confusion (called the “Fog of War” by Prussian General Clausewitz) that the General might ride forth with his staff “to the sound of the guns” to get the battlefield information first hand so that the staff could “plan on the fly” and keep the momentum of the attack going until the enemy breaks and flees. It happened for the Army of Northern Virginia as the Battle of Chancellorsville unfolded in darkness. One of General Lee’s “Corps” (a force with two or more Divisions of soldiers) Commanders (Stonewall Jackson) maneuvered his Corps (unseen) in front of the Union 11th Corps to position in strength on the 11th’s exposed right flank. Jackson attacked headlong, rolling the entire 11th Corps up like a garden hose, sending the 11th’s terrified troops into lines of other Union Corps, terrifying them to flee as well.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity to find and exploit more weakness in Union troop dispositions, Jackson and his staff rode through the combat to reconnoiter the ground ahead. Satisfied with what he and his staff learned, they attempted to return to their lines. In the darkness, they were not recognized by one of their own North Carolina infantry regiments, who mistook them for a troop of Union cavalry; they opened up with rifle fire on Jackson and his staff. Jackson lost four of his staff killed, others badly wounded, and his left arm was mangled. He lost that arm, then lingered for 8 days until death took him. Web search The Battle of Chancellorsville to see many interesting details from many points of view. Also web search “Staff Rides.” You can organize one for your friends at a National Military Park, to experience an echo of the adrenaline rush that the soldiers felt more than 150 years ago.

Botswana History

The history of Botswana is comparable to other African countries in the sense that their history can be divided into three periods, namely, before European occupation, European occupation and independence. However, the history of Botswana and its people can be considered unique because the period of their independence has been characterized by both political and economic stability.

Before European occupation

The major ethnic group in Botswana is called the ‘Tswana,’ from which the term Botswana is derived. Before the Europeans came to Africa, the people in Botswana were mostly herders and farmers that were under tribal rule. Right before the Europeans came, there were hostilities that broke out between the inhabitants of Botswana and other tribes from other places, which included hostilities between Boers and the tribes of Botswana.

European occupation

By 1885, the hostilities became worse. To end the hostilities, Khama III, who was then the leader of Botswana, asked the British Government for assistance by putting the northern territory (Bechuanaland) under its protection. This northern part eventually became Botswana, and the southern part became part of South Africa.

When Britain formed the Union of South Africa, the Bechuanaland protectorate was not included together with Lesotho and Swaziland. The British made a provision that these areas would later be incorporated in the Union, but this never occurred. Two of the major events that hindered this incorporation were the institutionalization of apartheid in South Africa in 1948 and the eventual withdrawal of South Africa from the Commonwealth in 1961. While all these were happening, British authorities expanded. In the 1920s, tribal governments evolved in Botswana through the establishment of two advisory councils represented by Africans and Europeans. In 1934, tribal rules and powers were formally established, which led to the establishment of a European-African council in 1951. In 1961, a constitution was drafted, and it established a consultative legislative council in the country.

Independence

By 1964, the British accepted the desire of Botswana to be independent and allowed the people to write a new constitution by 1965. After the constitution was written, elections were held, and independence was granted in September of 1966. The first President to be elected was Seretse Khama who served until 1980 (after two re-elections) until his death in office. Since then, regular elections have been held every five years. The current President of Botswana is Festus Mogae.

The history of Botswana may have followed the trend of most African countries. However, Botswana has experienced relative stability since its independence. This sets the country apart from the more unstable democracies in the region.

The New American Urbanism

American readers are going to be thrilled by this: somebody out there is trying to build a new America – without Americans, that is. And, to be more specific, it is the European Union (EU), Putin’s New Russia and Capitalist China the ones that are trying to do it. They all call this trend the ‘New American Urbanism’.

The New American Urbanism is what city planners, architects, civil engineers, developers, realtors, appraisers and bankers throughout the United States refer to as simply ‘Urbanism’. It is the way so familiar to us all in which cities, towns and communities have been conceived, planned and built. There is nothing new about it, since Urbanism in the United States and to a lesser extent Canada is a phenomenon that dates all the way back to the Seventies. It is just the very practical way North American cities are structured: a mix of shopping, residential and light industrial districts effectively connected by a system of boulevards, roads, streets and alleys. Residential neighborhoods are comprised of mixed-use housing clustered with schools, sports centers, wide sidewalks and essentially with everything at close range from home.

Business is carried out in the city centre areas or in downtowns, with the typical characteristic skyline of concrete high-rise and low-rise buildings. One would not think that all this would cause such an uproar. But it has. There are three specific reasons for the rest of the world to all of sudden rediscover America and to put it (again) under the microscope: time, money and economy of scale. The EU, Russia and China all face the common dilemma of having to relocate millions and millions of people on relatively short notice and share the common denominator of minimizing social cost and maximizing affordability.

With the collapse of European borders and the fast-approaching disappearance of singular national identities, the urban trend throughout Europe nowadays is to create centers where jobs are being relocated and redeveloped. Cities and towns must follow the people who, in turn, follow economic prosperity wherever they may find it. As such, it is imperative that a social and living thread be created quickly and swiftly anywhere there is a need for it. Call it the logistics of capitalism, but the EU cannot possibly achieve its coveted objective of creating a free market zone of 600 million or so people, double the one in North America, if this area cannot be properly connected, effectively serviced and economically integrated.

Likewise, it has been over a decade that Russia is in the process of abating the old Stalinist organization of a modern, self-sufficient European Russia on one side surrounded by a cluster of backwards Asian republics and Putin – the former KGB boss – has now become for domestic political reasons the chief architect of the new Russian social integration. Consequently, the republic is now in the process of developing far away areas the likes of northern Siberia and the East Urals, and will shortly be facing the huge problem of having to accommodate, house, connect and integrate millions and millions of domestic migrants and workers.

China suffers of an ailment called ‘one side development’: its coastal areas, home to thirty-five percent of China’s 1.3 billion people are expanding at the rate of 10 percent per year and have been doing so for the past decade, while the remaining sixty-five percent of the population living in the hinterland is housed in communities where running water is thought of as the ultimate luxury. Chinese leadership is very much aware of the economic rift that exists between the affluent, modern and westernized city dwellers on one side and the poor, uneducated and hopeless inhabitants of the countryside, as well as the tension, envy and huge social unrest that this situation – if not resolved quickly – will inevitably lead to.

Hence, America. Using standardized models of development it has occurred to urban planners throughout the globe to think (possibly at the same time) that it takes Americans four years to fully build, connect, develop, service and integrate from scratch a standardized community for 30,000 people. This would include building roads, viaducts, railway, shopping centers, living dwellings, parks, sidewalks, streets, lighting, school and sports facilities, utility installations such as electricity, telephone lines, cables, sewers, water mains, a small airport as well as plant trees everywhere. Furthermore, the typical housing construction time in the United States, counted from digging a hole in the ground to giving the keys to the owner, is five and a half months. Using the same standardized models but applied to different construction and development methods, it would take seven years for Western Europeans to accomplish the same objective, with the average housing construction time running to about one year. The Russians would take almost ten years to do the same, with a typical housing construction time of one year and data is unavailable for the Chinese – but it is common belief that it would take them longer than the Russians to build this model town in the countryside.

Moreover, what foreigners especially cherish of North American cities, towns and neighborhoods is the economy of scale: the more you build, the less expensive it gets. And, naturally, the fact that environmental concerns are of paramount importance, particularly in Canada. So much so, in fact, that Europeans have banded together none other than in Stockholm to draft, well … The Charter of Stockholm, in fact, where the Council for European Urbanism has adopted officially as its mission the objective of maintaining and preserving the well being and integration of the present and future generations by building cities, towns and villages speedily and with mixed-use with architectural lines, construction techniques, planning and management modeled upon American cities.

Seems that somebody is eating back a lot of criticism these days …

The Paradigm Shift To Digital Tax Could Cost Pounds 160m For Ireland

Digital Tax to cost Ireland €160 million per annum

The tax would cost Ireland €160 million per year. It does raise questions about the pace of future FDI into Europe, and into Ireland. Of greater significance is the EU rules of establishing a digital permanent establishment (PE). The proposed new rules of taxing digital businesses could hurt the corporate tax revenues of Ireland. If a big player with European headquarters in Ireland pays this levy, then they could count it as an expense against the tax they declare in Ireland. For the EU, a fair global tax system will ensure greater transparency and sustainable development. The Irish government position is that corporate tax reform should be made into the multilateral system. The European Union estimates a tax revenue of €5 billion and allocation of the revenue across EU Member States based on population. The digital tax would cost the Exchequer between €120 million and €160 million every year. The resulting taxable profits are liable to be taxed at the applicable rate in Ireland.

EU’s decision an encroachment on Ireland’s sovereignty

Digital service tax paid for doing business outside Ireland may be set off against Irish CT. Ireland would get €45 million if the tax was reallocated proportionately to European Union member countries based on population. If a big player with European headquarters in Ireland pays this levy, then they could count it as an expense against the tax they declare in Ireland. The introduction of digital services tax gives high-profile tech companies to new profit tax bases, hence the DST charge related to such revenues are fully deductible. The increased tax rate difference between Ireland’s corporate tax rate of 12.5% and the corporate tax rates with a DST among member countries effect the profit shift from Ireland. EU Member States who choose its own tax systems and non-EU countries who are seeking to maximize tax revenues would result in a seismic profit shift from Ireland.

Irish tax base erosion and profit shifting

Profit shifting is already prevalent in mutual agreement procedure and correlative adjustment in Ireland. Ireland and some other member states have alleged that direct taxation does not fall within the competence of the European Commission. The Commission is moving towards tax harmony where it is necessary for the prevention, restriction or distortion of competition within the internal market. EU member states and non-EU member states will introduce new digital tax policies and at the same time change the digital permanent establishment rules, along the proposals set out in the proposed directive with regard to a significant digital presence. In either case, the implications are that the effective rate of tax on the non-US profits of digital firms will increase and the corporate tax revenues of Ireland will erode. Tax may no longer be a compelling reason for a global enterprise to invest in Ireland.

Audi AG – The History of Audi

Audi AG is the company responsible for production of cars of the Audi model. Though not a fully-fledged company themselves, Audi AG have made a huge profit on their successes over the years with cars such as the Audi TT. Audi AG is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group who own 99.7% of all shares in the company.

Audi AG’s motto is ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’, which translates into English as ‘Advancement through technology’. It is this attitude towards technology and class that has set Audi aside from its competitors since the company was formed all the way back in 1899 by August Horch.

The first Audi car was produced in 1901 – albeit under the company name ‘Horch’, named after the founder. Horch was himself however expelled from the company in 1909, and founded Audi as a second company to rival Horch. The first cars Audi produced were 2.6L four cylinder models and 3.6L models, gaining speed and momentum already in sales figures and profit.

During the Second World War, Audi provided a lot of cars and specially designed military vehicles to the German armed forces to aid them in their efforts. After May 1940, no more civilian production took place, with the company (now known as the ‘Auto Union’ after a merger) decided to provide vehicles solely for military usage.

In 1964, well after the war had finished, the Volkswagen Group moved in and bought a majority share of the company, a decision that would prove to be remarkably profitable, revolutionizing the company and allowing it to surpass all limits anyone could have imagined for it.

After another merger in the late 1960s, the ‘Auto Union’ became known as ‘Audi NSU Auto Union AG’. The first car to be released after this merger was the Audi 100, another instant success, followed by the Audi 80 and Audi 50 not long after. The Audi 50 was renamed the Volkswagen Polo in 1974.

Audi at this point had an image of conservatism, and to remedy this they decided to move into the racing and high performance markets. The Audi Quattro, a turbocharged coupe was released to help with their aims in this sector.

In the early 21st century, Audi is continuing to do well, with sales and profits growing on a yearly basis, and Audi continuing to be regarded as one of the most successful car companies ever. In 2008, over a million units were sold, and the profit was around three trillion euros, with a turnover over ten times this. Audi provides employment to over fifty thousand people in countries worldwide and remains a formidable force in the car industry today.

Match Your Horoscope for a Happy Married Life

The saying is Marriage is made in heaven; it is so because in Hinduism it is believed that the union of marriage is planned even before taking birth. A properly analyzed horoscope will assure happy marriages.

What if I get married without getting my horoscope analyzed? Wouldn’t I be happy? Or it has to be considered only in arranged marriages? or is horoscope matching optional for love marriage?

All these kinds of questions are haunting the new generation. An understanding of what the horoscopes can reveal will compel the men/women to opt for it.

1)It makes you aware of the compatibility between the couple:
