Beats Per Minute and Beats Per Measure – The Two Important BPMs of Every Song!

When should the male dancer begin to lead his partner into her six-count or eight-count footwork once the swing music begins? The answer is that he should begin leading her on any of the song’s downbeats; that is, on the “1” count, the “3” count, the “5” count or the “7” count. These “base beats” are the backbone or pulse of a song! You don’t need to be a trained musician to understand a song’s tempo (or timing), just listen to music and pick out the rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar or piano).

To take the pulse of the song and determine its number of beats per minute (BPM), count these downbeats for fifteen seconds and then multiply by four. Very slow swing songs have around 70 BPM and very fast ones have upwards of 200 BPM. The swing songs that I personally enjoy dancing to the most, average about 125 BPM which coincidentally approximates my optimum cardio-training heart rate when I exercise. Notice that these downbeats differ from the upbeats that occur on the “2” count, the “4” count, the “6” count or the “8” count. In the St. Louis Imperial style East Coast Swing, we begin stepping on any of the music’s downbeats; however, this is not true of all styles of dance. In the Cha-Cha, for instance, dancers begin stepping after any of the music’s upbeats.

Beats per minute became common terminology in popular music during the disco era because of its usefulness to DJs; and it remains important in dance music today because both our style of dance and our footwork rhythms are determined by the tempo of the music! The original or classic style of Imperial Swing, which is danced “in the round,” is performed to music with a faster tempo (130-185 BPM) using primarily the slower single step and double step footwork rhythms. Today’s contemporary style of Imperial Swing, which is danced within a slot, is a combination of both East Coast Swing (135-175 BPM) and West Coast Swing (75-115 BPM). Dancers perform this popular, “slot-bop” hybrid to music with a slower tempo (100-135 BPM), and they use primarily the faster, triple step footwork rhythms. Remember, the terms are music timing (or tempo) and footwork rhythms (or steps) but not vice versa!

The “time signatures” of different music styles tell dancers how many beats there are to a measure, and which note represents that beat. Swing music uses 4/4 timing; that is, there are 4 beats to a measure (4/4) and the quarter note gets the beat (4/4). For example, on the 1 and 2 count of your six-count, triple step footwork, the “1” is an eighth note (or a half-beat) and the “and of 1” is an eighth note (or a half-beat). Together they add up to a quarter note or 1 beat; and the “2” count is a quarter note or 1 beat. On the 3 and 4 count, the “3” is an eighth note (or a half-beat), and the “and of 3” is an eighth note (or a half-beat). Together they add up to a quarter note or 1 beat; and the “4” count is a quarter note or 1 beat. These 2 beats bring the cumulative total up to 4 beats or one measure.

Finally, on the 5 – 6 breakstep, the “5” count is a quarter note (or 1 beat) and the “6” count is a quarter note (or 1 beat). These final two 2 counts bring the total up to six beats or one and a half measures. To summarize this footwork count, dancers take eight steps in six beats of the music. The 1st and 3rd beats are the downbeats (or base beats) and the 2nd and 4th beats are the upbeats. In East Coast Swing the accents* are on the 1st and 3rd beats (counts); however, in West Coast Swing the accents are on the 2nd and 4th beats. Good dancers let the music tell them what to do with their feet. If they begin their footwork on any of the song’s downbeats, and then end it on the sixth (or eighth) beat, then they are dancing in time with the music and finishing their steps when they are supposed to. As Skippy Blair, the renowned swing dance teacher, author and recipient of the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame Award, tells her students: “please don’t tell me how long to hold the beat; just tell me what the count is, so I can place my feet!

*Note: Skippy Blair’s: “Elements of Music and Timing” defines an accent as a firm sound or move on one particular note or count.

Swinger Clubs – What To Do When You Take Your Wife or Girlfriend To A Swinger Club

Because your wife or girlfriend will be free to become as involved as she is comfortable with, visiting a swinger’s club is ideal for her to explore the Swinging Lifestyle. There’s no pressure to participate in any activities unless she wants to, and she can choose to just watch and or be watched. It’s also a great opportunity to see for herself how couples in the Swinging Lifestyle treat their partners and how they interact with others. Here are a couple of tips to help you have a great night:

  • If this is your first time at a swing club go there to socialize, meet people and get comfortable. To minimize any pressure you may be feeling, go with minimal expectations of actually having sex with others. In general, most people do not wind up having sex with anyone their first time at a swing club. Couples who set high expectations when they first get started are often disappointed. If by mutual agreement things go further than you expect, then it will be a pleasant surprise.
  • Before you go your wife or girlfriend will probably fret a little over what to wear. Whatever she wears, your job is to reassure her and tell her she’s beautiful. Even though it seems like such a simple thing, it can make all the difference in her confidence level.
  • Promise her that if she gets uncomfortable at any point and wants to leave, you will do so immediately with no arguments and with no questions asked.
  • Women are usually more nervous about the evening as first time visitors, so it’s especially important for you to not add fuel to your wife or girlfriend’s nervous fire by bouncing off the walls with the thought of fulfilling all your fantasies. That way she’s not worried that you’ll dive into the first orgy you see!
  • Making friends is the key to good swinging, so don’t hesitate to introduce yourselves. You never know if that nice couple you meet will be your first swinging encounter! The sooner you speak to other couples, the sooner you will get to know people and the sooner they will get to know you.
  • If you feel shy or awkward about just walking up to someone you’d like to meet, ask the club staff to introduce you to other couples. They’re usually very eager and happy to help you feel comfortable.
  • Tell others that you are new to swinging. There are lots of experienced couples who would he happy to show you some gentle loving and caring.
  • At the very least just plan to have a fun and adventurous time out in a sexually stimulating atmosphere and have great sex together afterwards!

Grooved Golf Swing Series: Miscellaneous Putting Tips

When you are assessing the contours of the green between your ball

and the hole, you can stand, squat, or lie on our belly.

Ok, lying on your belly is not an option, but I include this to

make a point.

Standing and looking at the green sloping to one side or the other

along the path of your put will not show properly the different

contours.

Standing seems to flatten out the look of the green.

Lying on your belly will show you the immediate contours but will

not show you enough distance.

It will be too local.

Squatting is the best method to see the lie of the land.

You will be able to see each and every little slope to the right or left

along the line to the hole.

If you are in doubt even after this,

have a look at the lie of the land around the green.

Does it slope in a particular way?

From the front of the green to the back or

from back to front?

Does it slope from the sides? If it does, it will be a good bet

that the ball will break this way.

The next point I want to make is about long and middle distance

puts.

Which is more important, direction and line or distance?

You say “Both”.

I totally agree.

However, after you have worked out the line using the points

mentioned above, you will place your putter head accordingly on

your chosen line.

Once your putter is in place the direction is

taken care of. It is no longer an issue.

This means your total thoughts are now on distance.

You should know how far to take your putter head back to achieve a

certain distance.

Have a couple of practice puts to work out how

far back to take your putter, and do this while looking at the

hole.

It is a good idea to take your putter back very slowly and even

stop very briefly to make sure it is back far enough. Then you make

a purposeful stroke to get the ball up to the hole.

Do not try to sink this put, but think only of getting the ball

close to the hole to make sure you are down in two puts.

For the middle distance puts, do the same.

If you try to sink these puts, you will probably be too aggressive

and go too far past the hole if you miss.

This could well mean a three put green. A wasted

shot.

I won a championship once by concentrating on two putting every

hole.

To my surprise, I had several one puts.

I was not trying to sink the put, just get it close.

I remember being so surprised when

the ball fell into the hole with my first put.

It was the furthest thing from my mind.

A lovely surprise though. Hereby could hang a

tale.

Grooved Golf Swing Series: How To Control The Distances Of Your Puts

Usually but not always, the practice putting green will be

something similar to the greens on the course.

The same quickness, slowness break or borrow.

Therefore it is, in my opinion, essential to have a few puts, and even more than a few

puts before your round of golf.

Further to practising your putting, probably at least thirty six of

your strokes during a round are puts.

This number will decrease as your handicap drops.

The point is that puts constitute about one third of your total score.

Therefore it seems logical does it not,

to devote at least one third of your practice time to putting?

Now back to distance control.

Probably the most difficult method of hitting accurate puts up to

the hole and slightly beyond it is to hit the ball with different

degrees of firmness.

If you use this method, you will probably find

that your accuracy will vary from day to day and that your very

long puts just do not get to the hole or go too far past.

There is no real way that you can have an inbuilt gauge to hit the ball with

a firmness to send it a definite distance consistently.

The other way, and by far the better way, in my opinion is to

control your distance with length of backswing.

This means that you can develop a consistency of swing.

The swing speed can be made constant.

The short puts will reach the hole with no yip.

It is amazing how the mind can play tricks and make one

mishit a shot from a couple of feet.

With the required back swing and the normal club head speed, this is almost an impossibility.

Then what about those long puts.

All you have to do is know the length of back swing to make the ball travel the required distance.

Look at Tiger Woods.

Huge long puts, yet he leaves his ball beside

the hole (or in it) and he is seldom short or too far.

He has his back swing worked to the Nth degree and is so confident.

This comes with practice and all you have to do is have a look at

your back swing from the edge of the green along a flat surface and

see how the ball goes for different lengths of back swing.

When you are doing this, tell yourself that you are looking at back

swing first and then the resulting distance the ball will travel

second.

Therefore, take your club back slowly and stop. Tell your

self that the backswing is four inches, then five, and then six and

so on.

When you take your club back, stop.

Have a look at the club head and see the distance it is from the ball.

Let it register in your mind.

Then hit the ball and measure the distance.

The forward stroke of the putter must be at the same speed every

time.

This is not difficult and think about stroking the ball

rather than giving it a wrap.

So, if you are stroking the ball, the longer back swing will allow

the club head to gather momentum and so the ball will go further.

The value here is that you will always be consistent and will hit

the ball a given distance for a given back swing almost every time.

Then, all you have to do now is to allow for the slopes up and down

between your ball and the hole.

One very good method to put up and down slopes is not to think that

you have to hit the ball harder, which of course defeats the

argument of this discussion.

No, just put to a point beyond the hole for an up hill put and to a

point short of the hole for a down hill.

The slope in between will cause your ball to travel the correct distance to the hole.

This takes a little courage you will find.

It is a trick to hit the ball off the toe of the putter to make it

go slower when you want to hit a very delicate put down hill but

for the main, hit the ball from the sweet spot of your putter.

To find the sweet spot, bounce a golf ball onto the face of the

blade and find the spot where it is sweetest and does not tend to

turn the club in your hand.

How Does Ernie Els Hit the Ball So Far?

When Tiger Woods swings his driver, or Bubba Watson, you can see the power and you almost hurt yourself just watching. Then there’s Ernie Els, every recreational golfer’s favorite player. With what seems like no effort at all, he hits the ball just as far as anyone. How does he hit the ball so hard with such an easy swing? To begin with, appearances are deceptive.

Ernie hits it harder than you think he does, but let’s back up first to his development as a young golfer. The story goes that when he was a boy, he would hit plastic balls in his back yard. With an easy swing, they would go about 70 feet. If he hit one as hard as he could, it would go about 70 feet. This taught him that swinging out of his shoes wasn’t the key to good golf.

What he does is obey the fundamentals of the golf swing, the first of which is the setup. The grip, stance, aim, and posture that you get yourself into before you take the club away define the movement that can follow. A good setup tends to restrict your movements to the right ones. In a poor setup, anything goes, and most of it is wrong.

The second fundamental of his swing, the one that makes it stand out so, is his rhythm and tempo. He never rushes matters, letting them unfold in the right sequence and in the right time. He really does swing hard. If you have a chance to see him live, you will get a big surprise. But his rhythm and tempo allow his swing to flow gracefully and effortlessly from start to finish. They allow all his power to be concentrated at the moment of impact in a square, in-line hit.

Imagine you’ve hung up a carpet and you’re beating it with a tennis racket to get the dust out of it. You know that to get the maximum effect from your blow, the racket needs to hit the carpet traveling straight into the carpet, not at an angle to it, and the entire racket head needs to hit the carpet flush, not hitting the carpet first with an edge of the racket.

Now think of the carpet as a golf ball, and the racket as your club’s head, and there you have it — a square, in-line hit. That’s how to hit the ball hard, and that’s what Ernie does. Always keep in mind that swinging hard and hitting hard are two different things.

There is one more thing about him that try as we might, most of us won’t be able to copy–talent. Ernie, along with all professional golfers, has a talent for hitting the ball a long way. You’re either a long hitter or you aren’t. Paying attention to the fundamentals allowed him to develop his talent fully. You can do the same thing, and hit the ball as far as your talent allows, which will be plenty.

Wife Swapping is Hot News Right Now

Married couples, singles and everyone in between can take part in wife swapping, but why is it that sexy single women have all the fun?

There is a saying that says that men go out and hope to score while women know if they’ll score. With the wife swapping lifestyle it is exactly the same – sexy single women get to have all the fun. So why is it that the sexual gods favour hot single women? Is it because instead of raising kids, like married woman, they go out to party or is it because they still have a sexy physique?

I personally think that adults want to take part in the wife sharing lifestyle with sexy single women because it allows them to enjoy uncomplicated and fun swinging with no strings attached.

Sexy comes in small packages

There is a conventional belief that swinging is just for couples, whether they are married or not. If we look at the history of wife swapping it was married men in the US air force that started this phenomenon by having sex with the wives of the pilots that died in the war.

In this way men became accustomed with the concept of sleeping with another woman who’s not married.

It’s the year 2007 and men are still horny and looking to sleep with sexy single women. Now they can do so without cheating on their wives. The only difference from the 1950’s is that they choose to follow this wife sharing lifestyle and it’s not circumstances like war that leads them to it.

Wife sharing – a powerful tool

There are a few places where you will see the sharing of power between married couples more evidently than in the wife swapping society. Instead of married women having to find out that their husbands are having affairs with hot single women, they can now take the power into their own hands by joining the swinging lifestyle.

For these women it’s not all about pleasure but also about power. Nothing is more powerful for them then having their husband watch them have sex with someone else. But women aren’t stupid either and because husbands are jealous creatures by nature, married women prefer single women to single men.

It’s a win-win situation that keeps both parties happy. A large percentage of women in the Uk are Bi and this also brings up the demand for single women to participate in this sexy lifestyle. Single women who are bisexual see swinging with another woman as safe; because the other female is safely locked-in to a marriage.

Clubs score money with the lifestyle.

Everyone knows that single men are constantly horny and will do almost anything to get some action. Just take popular dogging sites for instance; they are filled with single men who want to change their voyager title to that of swinger.

UK Club owners have realized that and many wife swapping clubs now invite single guys to participate at an open night. These single males want to participate so badly, that the club ends up making loads of money. The only problem is that married swingers go out of their way to avoid these single men nights, leaving the single men once again out on the sidelines.

If you’re a single male then the best advice I can give you is go get a girlfriend and then maybe you can start to really enjoy the swinging lifestyle.

How to Have a Compact Baseball Swing and Help Batters Who Lunge, Overstride and Step Out

Most youth baseball players have long swings. A long swing is either one where the bat barrel starts too far from correct hitting position or one that takes a detour from the direct path to the contact area, or both. Long swings lead to most hitting mistakes.

I believe all baseball-hitting coaches agree that a compact baseball swing is desired. A compact swing is one that is direct to the ball, while still allowing hitters time to wait for pitches and provide the power to drive the ball to all fields. While teaching the art of hitting for over 23 years, one thing I have learned is that unlike teaching pitching and fielding, it is necessary to correct hitters’ upper body (bat position and 1st move) before addressing the lower body issues of over striding, stepping out (in the bucket), and lunging. Time after time, I have observed coaches attempt to fix hitters’ incorrect strides and lower body actions to no avail. Hitters incorrect actions do not go away because long swings create lower body issues that remain until their swings are more compact.

Over time, hitters’ subconscious minds have told them that when they cannot get the bat out front on time, they must compensate. Hitters with long swings learn to compensate incorrectly with the mentioned problems of over striding, lunging, and stepping in the bucket. They in order to get the bat to the pitched ball on time. Coaches can tell hitters with incorrect strides a million times not to step out, over stride or lunge without results for the stated reason – their swing is long and that is the only way to avoid being continually late on the ball. The only solution lies in creating a much shorter (compact) swing. This is not meant to say that the lower half of the body is not crucial to good hitting fundamentals but the swing needs to be addressed first. As proof, good hitters can hit consistent line shots from their knees with a good swing, without the power of course, but cannot hit the ball solidly with great lower half mechanics with an incorrect swing.

I have also repeatedly noticed that once compact swings are developed with the correct hitting starting positions and the correct first moves, hitters’ lower half problems disappear. Without compact swings, hitters automatically return to their bad lower body habits because they cannot wait long enough on the ball

Therefore, it is necessary that coaches teach the correct hitting position at stride foot landing. A compact swing begins with the correct bat barrel positioning when the hitter’s front foot lands. The bat barrel should be on a line directly above the rear shoulder with the hands remaining at shoulder height and about two inches back of the rear shoulder. From this position, the bat starts on a direct path to the ball with the hitters’ rear elbow coming into the body as the hands are heading to a palm-up, palm down position through the contact, hitting zone. The bat naturally levels off sooner on lower pitches than on higher pitches.

Following are hitting drills that can turn long swings into compact ones and drills that will help eliminate the hitting mistakes of lunging, over striding and stepping in the bucket:

Drills with no batting tee available:

1. Dropped Ball Drill – Coaches stand slightly in front and to the side of the hitter, out of harm’s way. After hitters stride foot lands coaches drop the ball into the hitting zone. Hitters with long swings will be continually late on this drill, until they shorten and quicken their swings.

2. Net behind the hitter drill – Have hitters stand within a half foot of a net that is directly behind them (towards catcher) and swing without hitting the net on the way to the ball. To ensure that hitters do not lunge away from the net, they should hit the same net on their follow through without pulling their head or front shoulder off the ball.

3. Top hand drill – With a small bat or by choking way up on their regular bat, hitters can work on hitting with just their top hand, which will help them control the barrel on a more direct path to contact.

With the use of one batting tee:

1. High tee drill – By setting the ball on a tee that is at chest level, hitters should work on hitting line drives. Long swings will generally lead to popped up balls, chopped balls or totally missed balls.

2. Dropped ball drill with tee – Setting a batting tee at hitters’ waists and even with their rear hips, hitters should miss the tee on their way to the dropped balls.

With 2 batting tees available

1. Low/high tee drill – Set a ball on one tee even with the hitters front leg and a ball on the other tee a foot in front with the ball nearest to the catcher a ball and a half width lower. Hitters work on hitting line drives on the front ball after missing the rear ball.

Of course, some of these hitting drills can also be performed with live batting practice, too. Finally, it must be emphasized that without the correct and described bat barrel position upon stride foot landing, none of these drills work to fix and shorten the swing, leaving hitters with their long swing and lower body problems.

Grooved Golf Swing Series: Do You Have Putting Problems? Here Are Some Solutions For You

Here are a few things about putting that probably give you some

trouble.

You are playing a round of golf and the greens are nice and dry and

the ball is running well on the greens.

You have got the hang of

how hard to hit it and how far it will go for a certain strength of put.

Now it starts to rain.

At this stage I for one used to have

uncertainty about how the ball would run on a wet green.

Do I hit the ball harder? Will it break less? Will it stop sooner?

It totally depends on how much rain has fallen and how wet the

greens have become.

If they are very wet, the ball will not roll as far, will not break

as much and you will have to hit your puts a little harder meaning

a longer back stroke.

However, the usual thing is that the greens are still firm but the

grass is wet from the recent shower.

Believe it or not, the wet grass will have very little effect on

your put.

The break and roll will be the same and the put will not

have to be hit differently from a put on a dry surface.

This is because the grass is so short that it can not hold much water.

The ball may stop a few inches shorter if the rain has made the green

wetter than a light shower, but the difference will be very small.

Some greens you will encounter, especially on tournaments, will be

very fast indeed.

I have played on greens where if the ball was set

in motion, it did not stop until it reached the other edge of the

green on a down slope. Pretty impossible.

The trick here is to try to keep your ball below the hole at all

times so that you have an up hill put for all your puts.

You have to have this thought well in your mind at all times.

Make sure of your two puts and play for this.

You will find you will put your ball into the hole sometimes

without really trying to hole out.

The important thing is to avoid the very fast down hill puts.

A put across a slope is preferable to a down hill put.

As I have said, have this factor in your mind at all times while on

or near the greens.

This means that you leave your chips below the

hole too.

Also your long puts.

Play your long puts and chips for position at all times.

You will be pleasantly surprised at your results for the day.

Because you have such a plan and are sticking to it,

you will find your confidence will soar.

You approach your first put with the thought of position

and not hitting it into the hole and a huge amount of the pressure falls away.

I know I have said this before, but put for two puts every time you are on the

green.

Not for the one foot puts of course, but for the middle and

long distance puts.

I remember having a five foot put for birdie, and because I tried

to sink the put, I was too aggressive and put my first put too far

past the hole.

Result – a three put green and instead of one under,

I was one over.

Dreadful feeling!

It is funny how one remembers these painful lessons.

Out of the many, many puts one makes in a

life time, one or two remain in one’s mind for ever.

These are seldom the really good puts.

The really painful ones always remain

don’t they?

Getting The Most Out Of The Swinger Lifestyle

The New Swinger Couple Drop Out Effect

The new swinger couple drop out effect is something that challenges many couples who take their first major step into the swinger lifestyle without immediately achieving what they were hoping for.

Typical examples of this drop out effect are:

  • Joining a swinger club and then not plucking up the courage to attend any of its events.
  • Arranging a swinger date with another couple who fail to turn up.
  • Having a first-time swinger date with a couple who don’t match up to their profile claims.
  • Attending their first swinger party only to leave before it got sufficiently warmed up. (Very often couples who do this subsequently claim that they “Waited all night for something to happen but it never did”. )
  • Attending their first swinger party but not feeling attracted towards any of the other guests.
  • Finding something else about a swinger date or swinger party that was not to their liking.

You’ll never get swinging unless you push the swing

Swinging is like most other things in life. If you look for things that are wrong, you can be sure to find them. If you expect everything to be perfect on your first try, it rarely will be and your most likely reaction will be to not persevere any longer.

The new swinger couple drop out effect examples listed above are most commonly experienced by two types of people. One are those who either consciously or unconsciously actually wanted to make swinging fail. It can be just one partner who is responsible or it might sometimes both partners. Either way, at some level or another, there was a wish to get out of their decision to embark on the swinger lifestyle.

The other type of people are those who genuinely do want to enjoy a swinging lifestyle but who have insufficient patience, tolerance and maturity to recognise that it can take perseverance and some courage to get underway.

Ultimately, no amount of counselling or advice can change the inevitable outcome the first type of couple will experience. They are simply not ready to embark on the swinger lifestyle and one can only suggest that they spend more time listening to one another and learn to accept that swinging can only ever be right when both partners are one hundred per cent up for it. I aim the following swinger-lifestyle success tips at the other type of people.

Join a good online swinger dating site

Anyone who is serious about wanting to get started on the swinger lifestyle will need to join an online swinger dating (or adult dating) site. This is without doubt the best way to find and meet other swingers but just becoming members and sitting back for the dates and invitations to start coming is not enough. Firstly you will need to put real effort into the creation of your profile and to ensure success you will need to take the initiative in making contact with other members. Most important of all is to persevere in finding, contacting and meeting it even when things don’t go so well. Shrug off the disappointments, the times where others fail to turn up for the meetings you arrange, or the times when the people you meet fail to match your expectations.

Getting the most from swinger parties

It can take a lot of courage to turn up to a first time swinger date but attending your first swinger party require even more nerve. Even after having dealt successfully with those pre-party nerves, many people experience yet more anxiety within a few minutes of arriving at an event. If you think about it for a moment, even a friend’s birthday party can sometimes seem a bit intimidating when you walk into a room full of strangers.

The way to overcome both the pre-party anxiety and the party nerves themselves is to understand and accept two things. One is that at any given event there will be plenty of other absolute newcomers. The other is that you will never be the only anxious person and the chances are that there will be plenty of others who are experiencing much worse anxiety than you.

Getting the most from swinger clubs

Joining a swinger club is a very similar situation to attending a private house party, although some people say they find the idea less daunting. In reality this is a false perception because swinger clubs, like all other types of club, are dominated by regular patrons who can be very cliquey. This sort of behaviour is likely to add an extra layer of social anxiety to events held at clubs as opposed to those hosted elsewhere.

The best way newcomers to the swinger lifestyle can deal with these perfectly understandable fears is to feel the fear and do it anyway and to do so in the certain knowledge that you will neither be the only newcomers nor the most nervous people there.
