Nothin’ But Blue Skies

“Welcome to Canada,” Ken shouted over the roar of the rain and thunder. A constant downpour kept the photography workshop indoors. We slipped out during a break in the clouds, but as soon as we set up our tripods, a thunderstorm swept in out of nowhere and sent us scurrying back down the mountain trail to our cars. Since I signed on for this tour of the Canadian Rockies everything had gone right.

It rained sporadically for the first two days of the workshop and we were all a little down. So, Ken Pugh, our photography instructor and guide, used the down time to teach us some nature photography techniques and camouflage tactics. Those sessions helped me a lot since I was a novice nature photographer.

When the clouds cleared we ventured out again and this time the weather held. I believe Ken chased away the bad weather with his sunny rendition of Willie Nelson’s “Nothing but Blue Skies,” which he sang constantly since the first day of the tour.

The days afterwards were a moody mix of sunshine, clouds and drizzle. The colors of the landscape were intensified from the rain and overcast skies and when the sun popped out from behind the clouds the light was soft and delicate. It was a great time to photograph the majestic mountains and forests.

My adventure in the Canadian Rockies started years earlier on my grandparents’ farm in Michigan where my sisters and I spent our summer vacations. It was there that I developed an appreciation for nature. As a teenager, I got into photography and soon after I started photographing landscapes.

Whenever I got the chance, I’d photograph the scenery in the city parks. After a while, those manicured landscapes bored me. I dreamed of photographing mountains and deserts, the places I saw in the glossy pages of photography magazines. But, I let that dream die away. I decided that since I lived in Chicago, a concrete jungle, a career as a nature photographer didn’t make much sense.

But dreams are hard to kill, they wait for just the right moment to rise and haunt you again. In my case that moment came a few years later. My life had become routine and I wanted to shake things up. I thought again about trying nature photography, but I still couldn’t see how to make it happen.

Then I came across a copy of “Mountain Light,” a coffee-table book of landscape photography by the late Galen Rowell. Rowell’s work featured the exotic light and perspective of images taken high up in the mountains at the edges of the world.

But, what really caught my attention was that he was an ex-car mechanic and self–taught photographer. Rowell, who was also a world–class rock climber, started taking pictures to share his adventures with his friends. When he started spending more time in the mountains than in the garage, he realized that he had come to a cross road. So he gave himself one year to become a professional photographer. He took chances to realize his vision and today his images are world–renowned for their magical light.

Rowell’s story and work inspired me. So I dusted off my camera and set an audacious goal. I decided to visit some of the landscapes Rowell himself had photographed.

I took a small first step. I bought a couple of books on nature photography. I studied John Shaw’s, “Complete Guide to Nature Photography Field Techniques.” Once I learned the basics, I set out to get some practice.

The closest natural wilderness to Chicago is the Indiana Dunes. So, that’s where I went. The trips were worth the effort. Most of the photographs I took were disappointing, but I took one good one. I entered that one in a local photography club contest and won an honorable mention. After that small victory, I decided I was ready for the mountains.

Then I started to have second thoughts. I didn’t know anything about the wilderness and whenever I mentioned my dream to anyone, their response was something like, “Okay, you just better watch out for the bears.” I was tempted to back out. But, I realized that I had come too far to quit.

So, I leafed through the advertising section of Outdoor Photographer magazine. I found a photography workshop for Yoho and Banff national parks located on the border of British Columbia and Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. Exotic enough, I thought. I called the number in the ad and signed up for an adventure.

I flew to Calgary and caught a bus to reach the designated meeting place. As the bus wound its way through the mountains, I was awestruck. It was the first time I had seen mountains up in person and up close. They loomed over everything like emissaries from heaven offering enlightenment to anyone willing to climb to their lofty, snow capped heights. I knew there was no way a photograph could ever capture their glory.

A few hours later I reached my destination; a combination restaurant, gas station, bus stop and motel located at the foot of a mountain range with no other sign of civilization in sight. When I walked into the restaurant it seemed everyone stopped and all eyes were on me. I paused near the doorway, scanning the room for anyone with a camera.

Then, I heard someone call my name. I turned and saw a burly looking guy wearing a denim jacket and sporting a thick black beard. A real live mountain man. He was waving me over to a table where six or seven people were seated. I walked over and he stuck out his hand and said, “Hi, I’m Ken.” I guessed he recognized me because he figured out that I was black from our telephone conversations. It was either that or my gear.

Everyone else on the tour was Canadian. One guy was from Nova Scotia. I had just a vague idea of where that was. Listening to the voices around me, I realized that I was the one with an accent. I had made it to the edge of the world.

After a hard day of trekking through the Canadian wilderness, we gathered for diner and talked long into the night. During those times we got to know one another and I learned more about Canada than I ever wanted to know. But, those conversations broadened my perspective, and I became a citizen of the world. It was a great experience hanging out with everyone.

A few weeks after I returned home I received letters from two members of the group where they expressed how much they enjoyed my company.

So, I had reached my goal and photographed the mountains. For awhile, I searched for a way to turn my passion into a part-time business. I photographed some landscapes while on vacation and mounted a few exhibitions of my work in bookstores and photography galleries. The highlight of my career was when the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago selected one of my photographs for its annual art show.

The recognition was wonderful, and a few of my photographs sold which was great, but somehow it less than what I expected. Gradually, I came to realize that when you follow a dream, money might not be the only measure of success. I see now that real success is best measured in terms of personal growth.

And in that department I’ve been a rousing success. I’ve seen and experienced the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I’ve met and connected with people from far away places and learned we’re all more or less the same. Above all, I’ve learned that “the bears” weren’t lurking in the forest waiting to get me if I said yes to a dream. This adventure has been “Nothing but Blue Skies.”

Easy Weight Loss With Green Coffee Beans

The use of green coffee bean extract is now one of the most talked about weight loss dietary supplements. Easy weight loss is hurriedly applied to products we see on late night television promising overweight men and women the quick fix. This is one supplement however that is living up to its claim.

While I have no doubt that many of the products advertised do work, you should be aware that your first priority is staying healthy. Please don’t get me wrong though, I am by no means saying that these weight loss promises are pushing products that are unhealthy for you, but rather that you should use some common sense and not sacrifice a healthy meal.

Come to think of it, if you are not feeding your body well then losing weight and looking slim and sexy will soon have no purpose if you are too sick to go to the beach or wear that close-fitting little black dress to the office party.

Green Coffee Beans.

No one will deny that coffee is the most consumed beverage in America and probably the world. When coffee beans are allowed to mature and harvested just the right time, roasted to perfection, I too get swept away to the “hills of satisfaction” with my first sip.

Drinking coffee is known to curb that hunger and boost energy either for starting your day or those who drink many cups during the day.

Researchers and scientists took notice and explored the effects of green coffee beans and weight loss.

Studies from the National Institute of Health can be found on National Institute of Health.

Slimming Coffee.

Could this be the biggest weight loss discovery of all time? Many are already fondly referring to their green coffee capsules as their “slimming coffee” and feel safe in its consumption since coffee was already a part of their diet.

Whether you call this your “Slim Coffee” or your “Slimming Coffee” I get the feeling that if you are already a coffee drinker then making the choice to try this weight loss discovery will be right up your ally.

If losing weight is a matter of getting healthy and you are finding it difficult to change diets then green coffee beans could be the answer.

Green coffee beans have now found a home among the millions of people who struggled with different diets and will be home for a very long time?

Scuba Diver Safety Lights

Every year scuba divers across the globe get lost at sea and some end up dying or never found. The majority of these divers sign up for a diving trip on a tour boat and due to inexperience, lack of common sense, negligence and just plain bad luck are subjected to the worse experience in their lives.

Many of these divers are swept away by currents, get separated from the other divers or encounter adverse underwater conditions that affects their sense of direction and time. The problem is that in a third world country the tour boat operator may be less concerned with the divers safety than keeping on schedule. And if you have a problem there are no lawyers that will sue someone.

Basically you are on your own or if you are diving with someone then it is imperative that you look out for each other throughout the dive. I did a dive in the Bahamas a couple of years ago and while clearing my ears upon the decent the dive master and three divers disappeared by the time I got to the bottom. In fact I never saw the dive master again until he surfaced forty minutes later. Luckily I had my friend watching out for me and waiting for me until I descended!

If you Google lost scuba divers you will be amazed at the number of lost divers and some of the tragic stories that ended in death. So what is a diver supposed to do to prevent you or your dive buddy getting lost in the middle of the ocean?

Common sense is the first and foremost rule of thumb! Don’t wander off, be aware of where the dive master is at all times, keep an eye on your other fellow divers, be aware of the strong currents that can move you at over 5 miles an hour, when you surface deploy your BC and look for the dive boat and other divers, have a signaling light or safety light with you.

Obviously there will be situations where you will find yourself in trouble but the key point is not to panic! Especially if you get to the surface and you are unable to see the dive boat or other fellow divers. This can also happen if the swells and waves are over four feet high and since you are floating low in the water the boat actually might be a hundred yards away and not be able to see you.

If you panic you will not be able to think clearly and you will waste precious energy. Time is against you because if there are strong currents they will be moving you farther and farther away from your starting point and you will start losing heat despite wearing a wet suit. Another thing to consider is if you are floating in the ocean you will need drinking water long before you need food and the sun will burn you.

Some basic precautions may improve your chances for survival. They have an inflatable signal devise that might be helpful but where do you keep it is the question. Another solution which is more helpful at dusk and at night is a signal light that obviously needs to be waterproof and long lasting.

Presently there are some lights on the market that will provide some help based on the color of the light, duration of the light, flashing or solid color, depth ability of the light, size of the safety light and durability.

Based on basic physics the most visible light either underwater or on top is a white flashing led light. Many of the lights that are supposed to be visible are solid and in different colors. Not the best choice if you want to be seen.

My preference is a water activated light that is bright white and flashing. There is a new company called diver savers that sells two types of lights that can literally last more than a 150 hours of continuous usage. Better than most of the others that rely on alkaline batteries that at most will burn for only thirty hours which is just over a day and probably not long enough in most cases.

Some of the lights on the market are the Trident Led Light Stick, the Trident Mini Flashing Light, the \waterproof Scuba Diving Strobe, the I Torch Firefly, the Princeton Tec Aqua Strobe, the Tek Tite Led Strobe, the Dive Buddy locator and the Diver Snorkel Beacon Light. These lights range from ten dollars up to sixty five dollars and some are plain junk and others are very well made.

The key points to look for is the construction, the size, the brightness, does it flash and how long does the battery last while in the ocean? Personally I prefer the water activated safety dive lights because they can last for over a hundred dives and not only make you visible on top of the water they will also make you visible to the dive master and fellow divers underwater.

Dive safely and enjoy the ocean!

Causes of Sino Facial Pain

Have you ever experienced unbearable pain around your nose, eyes and forehead? This condition is known as sino facial pain. If a patient is suffering from severe sino facial pain, they should seek treatment from an ENT specialist. At ENT London, our ear, nose and throat doctors are amongst the leading ENT specialists, not just in London but the whole of the United Kingdom.

Our doctors at ENT London are committed to providing the highest level of patient care in a relaxing and comfortable environment. We understand the impact that sino facial pain can have on a person’s life and hence place a strong emphasis on ensuring the best measures are taking to treat the condition as promptly as possible.

What are Sinuses?

Sinuses are small air pockets that extend from within the nose, to the bones of the skull. They are a component of the nasal air and membrane system that secretes mucus. Sinuses are linked to the nose through small openings. In a normal day, all foreign matter entering the nose is swept into the mucus, where it flows down the throat, until it is broken down by the acids in the stomach.

However, when nasal passages become affected by allergies, pollution or infection, the sinuses can begin to produce extra mucus. A swelling of the nasal membranes and other blockages, leads to irregular pressure in the sinuses and the collection of mucus. This can result in sino facial pain. The area affected by sino facial pain depends on which sinus is affected. Some regions affected by sino facial pain are:

• Forehead or face.
• Between the eyes, or behind them.
• Upper cheeks and teeth.

Some of the main causes of sino facial pain are chronic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, inflammatory nasal polyps and nasal neoplasm. Infectious conditions such as acute bacterial sinusitis can also cause severe pain in the face and forehead.

Some individuals are more susceptible to sino facial pain. They include:

• Individuals with allergies
• Individuals with deformities in the nose.
• Smokers.

Like with all medical conditions the first step is to make an accurate diagnosis of the problem. This will involve the ENT specialist first taking a detailed medical history to ensure an accurate diagnosis for the cause of the sino facial pain is made. The treatment prescribed by the ENT specialist will then depend on both its cause and severity. Depending on how serious a patient’s condition is, treatment may involve the prescription of medications such as analgesics or antibiotics or ENT surgery.

Earthquake Emergency – What To Do In Such A Situation?

In 1906, the residents of San Francisco, California, had an abrupt change of lifestyle. They learned that almost anything can happen without warning. An earthquake killed about 3,000 people and caused over $400 million in property damages. In 1920, the Gansu earthquake in China took about 200,000 lives. Then in 1948, the region around Ashgabat in the Soviet Union suffered a powerful quake that claimed over two-thirds of that city’s population (110,000 people died).

About Earthquakes

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded happened in 1960 in Chile. Registering 9.5 on the Moment magnitude scale, it created a tsunami that swept the entire Pacific Ocean. In 1972, 90% of the city of Managua, Nicaragua, was destroyed by a midnight earthquake that killed over 10,000 people. Then in 1985, the Great Mexican Earthquake struck, killing as many as 30,000 people, most of whom were never found. In 1989, San Francisco and surrounding areas experienced the “World Series Quake.”

In 2003, the Bam Citadel, the largest adobe structure in the world and built before 500 B.C. was almost completely destroyed, together with 70% of the city of Bam and 70,000 residents.

Most of them happen along what is known as the circum-Pacific seismic belt or the “Pacific Ring of Fire” bounding the Pacific tectonic plate. With high-population cities like Mexico City, Tehran, and Tokyo growing in areas of high risk, it is possible that a future earthquake could take as many as 3 million lives.

It’s hard to understand why people insist on living in earthquake-prone areas like San Francisco and the mountains of central and South America. But in fact, earthquakes are a common phenomenon, small ones happening somewhere in the world every day. Characterized by shaking and ruptures in the land, earthquakes also cause dangerous avalanches and landslides, fires like the terrible 1906 San Francisco experience, soil liquefaction where buildings literally sink into the earth, and massive tsunamis. Because the damage they do is enduring, they also leave high risks for disease in their wake as people try to find potable water to drink and dry, safe places to sleep and live.

People who live in high-probability earthquake zones must live each day as it comes, knowing that their fragile lives could be over in an instant. Knowing that tragedy can strike at any time, they prepare for it.

Technology specialist Jason lives near the Marina, the most high-risk area in his city. He accepts graciously the fact that living there is a risk, but he always stores basic supplies for that inevitable crisis. He keeps several gallons of fresh water, portable food packs, extra flashlights and batteries, and several thing-a-magics that would overwhelm the technologically-challenged.

Earthquake Safety Tips

* Duck. Stay off heavy objects that may fall. Find an open area or stand in a doorway.

* If you can’t get out of the building, seek protection under a heavy table.

* If you’re driving when the earthquake strikes, stay inside your car.

* If you’re in a mall or store, move away from shelving and other movable objects.

* In theaters and stadiums, duck under your seat and wait until the mob has largely left the area. Don’t get caught up in the panic-filled crowds.

Another Word of Advice

Being well-prepared, having a plan of action, is the best way to prepare to survive an earthquake. Lacking this comfortable knowledge, you are more likely to panic and make deadly mistakes.

Know where strong, stable structures are that may provide shelter. Avoid areas of poor construction or materials. Stay calm. Stay alert. Things change very quickly, and you should be ready to respond.

8 Important Questions to Ask Yourself Before Becoming a Model

You should learn that a prospective model recognizes and understands that these factors exist. Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you are serious about learning how to start modeling:

Question 1: Are you photogenic? The most beautiful woman in the world, whoever she is, may not look good on camera. Likewise the camera might love someone who has less beauty quality. Obviously success as a model of any type depends on how you photograph. If you are photogenic, you should already know it from the snapshots of you taken over the years.

Question 2: Are you a chameleon? The truth is the models that have the quality to change their look for the circumstance will generally have longer careers than those models that look the same in every photo.

Question 3: Are you graceful? Grace of movement comes from within. You are either born with it or not. It can be coached and honed. Whether you have grace or not will show up in your photographs.

Question 4: Are you inhibited? Fact is you can’t be too modest and succeed in modeling. In runway modeling, models rarely have enough time to change outfits and worry about covering up at the same time. In fashion magazine shoots the model is going to be handled by make-up people, clothing fitters armed with straight pins, and the photographer or an assistant may physically move the model into the desired pose.

Question 5: Are you confident? A feeling of well-being or confidence is an elusive quality. It is also paramount for a successful model. If you feel fat, shy, or clumsy, or if you are just worried about a pimple that insecurity will show on camera.

Question 6: Are you open minded? You have to be able to work with people of every culture, religion, race, and sexual orientation.

Question 7: Can you grasp the big picture? If you are swept up in the moment or you tend to think that you are the center of the universe, you could be in big trouble. The model is just one part of the creative process that involves art directors, photographers, stylists, make-up artists, and other crew personnel. The lack of grasp of the big picture will show up very fast and if the model tries to impose their view, it won’t be conducive to a long career in the industry.

Question 8: Are you patient? Some agents will tell you that if you don’t have patience you’ll never survive as a model. If you’re good you’ll be working a lot and in that work you will have to spend a lot of time waiting. Getting ready for the shoot can by trying. Patience is definite a virtue in modeling.

Goldfish Effect: The 8 Second Content Challenge

9 seconds.

That’s the average attention span of a goldfish.

A modern-day consumer’s attention span is now less than that.

As it turns out, a new 2015 Microsoft Corp. study revealed our deteriorating attention span is now an all time low of 8 seconds. This is one second less than the average goldfish. That’s right! A goldfish has an attention span of 9 seconds – 1 second more than you and I.

This in theory means that we actually have a better shot of interacting with a goldfish than visitors of the human kind.

Of all the movies about animal species attempting to overtake humanity, not one considered the goldfish. Goldfish are plotting a world takeover, beating us with their superior attention spans.

As a result, your business has 8 seconds to reel in a customer.

That’s 8 seconds of complete concentration and processing power before their brain moves onto the next task. Unless you’re in the business of making fish food, your audience isn’t made up of cute little goldfish.

Today, attention has become a scarce commodity for businesses, especially among Millennials. When people have such short attention spans, grabbing their attention is a challenge. There are many other fish in the sea, such as a constant stream of ads and conversations taking place in the form of emojis. It’s too easy for your message to get swept out to sea.

This “goldfish effect” affects all business decisions being made today and those yet to be made. So, how can you reel in consumers? Relax, marketing to the “goldfish” attention spanners out there is relatively easy!

Time to go Fishing!: Here are three tips to bait your hook with and lure in an engaged audience:

  1. Tell a story – Nothing grabs a viewer’s attention more than seeing something out of the ordinary. Make the “hook” in your story unique and people will pay attention. Create ads that induce an emotion.
  2. Be clever – When you write content for a website or flyer you want to grab people’s attention quickly. You want to arouse curiosity and keep them engaged in those first few seconds. This is where you really let that creativity bubble to the top and come up with something that engages your audience gets them to your call-to-action quickly. Which brings us to…
  3. Keep it short – Seriously short. The less the viewer is familiar with your brand, the shorter their attention span will be. Will your product or service help them? Speak to that. If you can’t answer that very simple question quickly… they’re gone. (Tip: Animated GIFs can capture attention, without the viewer thinking it takes up too much time.)

It’s alright if a few consumers slips from your hook and swim away. It’s natural. Not every consumer is going to be interested in what you are trying to say or offer. However, visitors that are interested will be kept engaged and entertained until they decide to stay in your pond.

You may now congratulate yourself for concentrating long enough to make it through this article.

Legal Blogs – The Nigerian Phenomenon

In the past two decades, blogs have almost completely taken over the World Wide Web. Most internet users find themselves going to blogs for information and articles on practically any topic as there are niche blogs in virtually every field. This explosive revolution has swept through every region of the world from Addis Ababa to Zurich.

Browsing through the internet in search of legal blogs from Africa, it is interesting to note that those coming out of Nigeria are pretty non-existent. Compared with countries such as Egypt, South Africa and Kenya, the indication is disheartening. The paradox lies in the fact that as of June 2009, Nigeria had the second largest number of online users, next to Egypt (internetwolrdstats.com). With over 40,000 qualified legal practitioners, it becomes a little mystifying why there is such a dearth of legal blogs coming out of Nigeria. A number of factors are responsible for this.

The rapid development of internet technology is a major factor. Even though Nigerians spend a lot of time on the internet, many have not evolved beyond the use of emails, Chat Rooms and a handful of websites although with the popularity of facebook, quite a number have made the migration to social networks. Nevertheless, blogging remains shrouded in obscurity.

Needless to say, there are a lot of lawyers in Nigeria who are internet savvy and some who have even delved into the world of web development but are still ignorant of the workings of blogs. Because they have no idea how a blog works or where the advantages of blogging lie, they have developed little interest in the blogosphere as a whole. This laissez-faire attitude has contributed far more to the near absence of legal blogs in Nigeria.

When all is said and done though, there are a few legal blogs around, although not enough to adequately represent the legal profession in Nigeria — but as the Nigerian Bar Association has gone digital, it might not be long before its members follow suit.
