Brian Tracy Says Success Is Predictable

Brian Tracy has been a student of success for more than 40 years and he’s studied and coached thousands of super achievers. His analysis suggests that success is totally predictable and his reasoning is simple and spot on.

If you go into the kitchen to cook a dish, and the very first thing you get is a recipe, and you follow the recipe, and you work with the recipe, eventually, you’ll master that dish.

Once you’ve mastered it and made it a few times, you can make the dish over and over again and you’ll remember the recipe.  You don’t have to keep going back to the recipe book.

Now, if somebody says, boy, that’s really delicious, you don’t say well, it’s a miracle like something out of voodoo.  No, you just followed a proven recipe that had been worked out by people before you.

And that’s basically the secret of success.  If you want to be successful in starting a business, then you study what people have learned. And everything that people have learned, they’ve written down or shared in seminars, or put onto audio programs.

I learned this from a very wise man named Cob Cobmeyer, who spent more than 50 years studying success. He had developed more than 1,000 success principles that he had derived out of something like 6,000 books.

When I met him, I asked him the question you would ask.  Of all of these thousand principles, which is the most important principle of all? And he said, “it’s simple, use proven success methods.”

Learn from the experts because you’ll never live long enough to learn it all for yourself. So what I find is that successful people are those who learn from others who’ve gone before them.

Unsuccessful people try to make it all up, like a cook going into the kitchen, taking ingredients out of the cupboard, throwing them all in a bowl, and wondering why it doesn’t taste good.

This is why 80% of salespeople are functioning well below their potential. Only 20% make all the money. It’s why 20% of businesses in any industry make all the profits, why 20% of the professionals in any service make 80% of the money and so on.

It’s because they follow proven success principles, proven recipes, proven formulas, proven combinations, and they just do them over and over again until they master them.  Then they can do more and more of them, faster and faster, easier and easier, at a higher level of quality.

Duplicating the efforts of successful people in order to achieve equal or similar results is an old Greek formula for success that still produces outstanding results for anyone who uses it.

EQ – Emotional Intelligence Quota And Success

We all want to be successful. Many of us set goals around becoming great, successful leaders. We are all looking for the steps, strategies and or formulas that fit us best. The industry is filled with authors, speakers, coaches and other professionals that speak of secrets to success. Not to mention the tapes audio and Internet resources available. Success in the business and the world globally looks to a new and different type of leadership. Leadership that blends knowledge (IQ) with Emotional Intelligence Quota (EQ)

Daniel Goleman is a leader in the field of EQ. I have studied and written research papers supporting Goldman’s EQ concept. I believe in it. I use it in my classroom and coaching. My clients-student and adults alike especially my clients in the business world globally have made positive transforms and reached new levels of success by incorporating Emotional Intelligence Training into their Coaching.

Daniel Goleman brilliantly states the concept in his book Primal Leadership “Great leaders move us. They ignite our passion and inspire the best in us. When we try to explain why they are so effective, we speak of strategy, vision, or powerful ideas. But the reality is much more primal: Great leadership works through the emotions. No matter what leaders set out to do–whether it’s creating strategy or mobilizing teams to action–their success depends on how they do it.

Even if they get everything else just right, if leaders fail in this primal task of driving emotions in the right direction, nothing they do will work as well as it could or should. That’s a very powerful but true statement. Research supports Goleman’s work and EQ philosophy.

What is Emotional Intelligence or EQ?

The term EQ encompasses the following five characteristics and abilities:

1.Self-awareness–knowing your emotions, recognizing feelings as they occur, and discriminating between them

2.Mood management–handling feelings so they are relevant to the current situation and you react appropriately

3.Self-motivation–“gathering up” your feelings and directing yourself towards a goal, despite self-doubt, inertia, and impulsiveness

4.Empathy–recognizing feelings in others and tuning into their verbal and nonverbal cues

5.Managing relationships–handling interpersonal interaction, conflict resolution, and negotiations

Why do we need Emotional Intelligence?

Research in brain-based learning suggests that emotional health is fundamental to effective learning. According to a report from the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs, the most critical element for a student’s success in school is an understanding of how to learn from “Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman. The key ingredients for this understanding are:

Confidence

Curiosity

Intentionality

Self-control

Relatedness

Capacity to communicate

Ability to cooperate

These traits are all aspects of Emotional Intelligence. Traits that are key in personal and professional development and becoming successful. Basically, a student who learns to learn is much more apt to succeed. Emotional Intelligence has proven a better predictor of future success than traditional methods like the GPA, IQ, and standardized test scores.

In recent years, the great interest in Emotional Intelligence on the part of corporations, universities, and schools nationwide. The idea of Emotional Intelligence has inspired research and curriculum development throughout these facilities to improve educational curriculum and incorporate these principles into every day learning for students. I became very interested in Goleman’s work back in 2000.along with the work of Howard Gardner and his Theory of “Multiple Intelligence” as a tool for providing success. Which I will discuss later in this article.

Building one’s Emotional Intelligence has a lifelong impact. Many parents and educators, alarmed by increasing levels of conflict in young schoolchildren–from low self-esteem to early drug and alcohol use to depression, are rushing to teach students the skills necessary for Emotional Intelligence. And in corporations, the inclusion of Emotional Intelligence in training programs has helped employees cooperate better and motivate more, thereby increasing productivity and profits, Researchers have concluded that people who manage their own feelings well and deal effectively with others are more likely to live content lives. Plus, happy people are more apt to retain information and do so more effectively than dissatisfied people.

As you can see EQ is more than a smile and an encouraging word, its a set of abilities that distinguish star performers from average leaders, the absence of which derails careers. As stated by Daniel Goleman in his book Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership, and The Center for Creative Leadership. The good news is that unlike IQ, your emotional intelligence, or EQ, can be developed.

What’s the payoff for EQ Training?

There are many leadership training programs where you can learn the strategies and tactics of leaders or “What to do” There are fewer where you can learn “How to be!

Will you be more effective as a leader if you develop excellent interpersonal skills by developing your EQ?

Of course, But the big payoff comes from your ability to use EQ to unlock, discover and liberate the most authentically powerful and creative leader within you! In today’s world successful leaders know how to sense, understand and use emotions to improve decision making, performance and overall quality of life.

What are some of the organizations that use EQ?

Many organizations like Allstate Insurance, All-American Homes, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Eli Lilly, Northrop Aviation, Social Security Administration, US Dept of Labor, the US Postal Service are providing EQ training to their employees with great success. Individuals in these organizations have increased their personal effectiveness by creating and taking part in productive working relationships.

Goleman hits the nail on the head in these quotes:

“IQ and technical skills are important, but emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership. When I compared star performers with average ones in senior leadership positions, nearly 90% of the difference in their profiles was attributable to emotional intelligence factors rather than cognitive abilities.” Daniel Goleman

“Emotional Intelligence is a master aptitude, a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities”- .”Daniel Goleman

What is Multiple Intelligence and how does it affect my success?

The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are

o Linguistic intelligence (“word smart”)

o Logical-mathematical intelligence (“number/reasoning smart”)Logical

o Spatial intelligence (“picture smart”)

o Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (“body smart”)

o Musical intelligence (“music smart”)

o Interpersonal intelligence (“people smart”)

o Intrapersonal intelligence (“self smart”)

o Naturalist intelligence (“nature smart”)

The basic theory states we all have 8 intelligences. That’s amazing! Some are stronger than others in us. We learn best through activities geared towards our MI strengths. I use the work of Goleman and Gardner in my classroom and in my Coaching practice. The results are amazing and life transforming. The success I see in my clients and students is nothing but positive. Combining EQ and MI provides individuals with a sense of “wholeness” that adds balance to their life and puts them on a road to success personally and professionally.

The learning that takes place using EQ and MI is “learning that is meaningful, necessary and lasts”

What implications does MI have for adults and career success?

The theory of multiple intelligences also has strong implications for adult learning and development. Many adults find themselves in jobs that do not make optimal use of their most highly developed intelligences (for example, the highly bodily-kinesthetic individual who is stuck in a linguistic or logical desk-job when he or she would be much happier in a job where they could move around, such as a recreational leader, or physical therapist). The theory of multiple intelligences gives adults a whole new way to look at their lives, examining potentials that they left behind in their childhood (such as a love for art or drama) but now have the opportunity to develop through courses, hobbies, or other programs of self-development.

Find Success Through Failure

Fail Your Way to Success

How many times do you have to fail before you succeed? That’s the million-dollar-question.

Maybe the first question should be – How many times have you failed in your life?

If you’re anything like me, then you’ve probably “failed” more times than you can count. Or more times than you’d like to admit. And how many times are those voices in your head telling you “you can’t do that,” “don’t even try, you’ll fail,” or “what makes you think you can?”

Or worse, do you hear yourself say negative phrases? Those small words with big impact – like “that was stupid,” “I’m such an idiot,” or “Why am I so lazy?” Why do we do ever say things like this to ourselves in the first place?

We have been programed, indoctrinated, for over 13 years (from Kindergarten through High School) that failure is not OK. Many of us have had that pounded into us for years beyond high school. Over and over we’re taught to believe that failure is not ok. Failure is looked down upon. We are accustomed to feeling embarrassed when we fail, taught to hide our failures, and to get down on ourselves about past failures. What’s worse, some of these failures turn into fears. These fears can overcome us, become paralyzing, and sometimes control us. They become so strong, to the point that we can no longer function or even think properly in the face of them. So, after all this, how do we overcome our fear of failure or our past failures?

First, know that you’re not alone.

Let’s be properly introduced to some of the greatest so-called “failures” of all time…

There’s Abraham Lincoln, who, in

1830 was demoted. He went from a Captain in the Army to a Private…

1832 he lost his job when he was defeated in his bid for the state legislature…

1833 he failed in business…

1835 his sweetheart died…

1836 he suffered a nervous breakdown…

1838 he was defeated in a run for Speaker of the House…

1843 he lost the nomination – he sought to run for a Congressional seat…

1848 he was a member of Congress and then lost his re-nomination for Congress…

1849 he was rejected for position of land officer; he was declined an appointment as secretary and then also as Governor of the Oregon Territory…

1854 he was defeated in a race for the U.S. Senate…

1856 he was defeated for nomination of Vice-President…

1858 he was again defeated in a run for the U.S. Senate… and just two years later, in

1860 he was elected President of the United States of America.

Talk about a long road. Not just failure in business, but failure again and again in politics. Heartbreak. Failure in just holding it together – a nervous breakdown isn’t something most people want to admit. And yet, President of the United States. One of our most cherished and admired Presidents…

Think Honest Abe is an anomaly? A one-of-a-kind? Let’s look at someone else.

There’s Winston Churchill, who, in

1880 developed a speech impediment…

1885 managed to fail the sixth grade…

1893 failed the military college entrance exam – three times…

1895 lost his only mother-figure when she passed away…

1897 he was defeated in war at Malakand…

1899 he was defeated in a run for Parliament Oldham; was captured and even imprisoned in a Prisoner of War camp in Pretoria…

1904 he finally had a seat in Parliament and ended up losing his seat in Parliament…

1908 he had a seat in the Cabinet and lost his seat there too…

1921 he lost his fourth child, who died at the age of three…

1922 he was defeated in a bid for Chancellor…

1931 lost his Cabinet seat… and in

1940 he became Prime Minister – inspiring the British resistance to Adolf Hitler through steadfast refusal to consider defeat, surrender or compromise. He led Britain in this role until Hitler’s defeat and is “widely recognized as being among the most influential persons in British history.”*

Perhaps you’re not impressed by politicians.

Maybe older figures don’t resonate with you.

Ever failed at an idea?

Thomas Edison did. His teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” In fact, he was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. How many times are you thankful for that bulb, every day?

Maybe you’re not an inventor. But, have you ever failed in business?

Henry Ford failed and went broke five times. Five times before becoming known as one of the largest car manufacturers of all time.

Not into cars? How about sports?

All-time great Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times in his career. For a long time he held the record for most home-runs but did you know that for decades he also held the record for most strikeouts? Can’t hit a home-run before striking out – more times than once, more times than you can count.

Babe wasn’t the only strike-out in town.

Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” He went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland. In fact, the proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim on the grounds that it would only attract riffraff.

Today millions of so-called riffraff from all around the world venture to Disney theme parks, cruises and resorts.

One more failure to consider, for all those music-lovers who are looking to find success one day in that arena:

Beethoven handled the violin awkwardly and preferred playing his own compositions instead of improving his technique. His teacher called him “hopeless as a composer.” Need I say more?

Perhaps you’ve heard of these names?

You must know some of them, if not all of them. Why am I making so much of them? Because all of these individuals learned something you may have not learned yet. They knew that failure is only a step closer to success.

Thomas Edison said it best when he said “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up!”

Are you close to giving up? Are you too afraid to start? Do you want to overcome your fear of failure and learn to use it to succeed? These 4 simple steps to overcoming failure are just for you – use them to succeed!

1) CELEBRATE FAILURE!

What? Yes, celebrate failure! When you get past your own pride and recognize that failure is all a part of growing, then you’re just getting started. Know that failing is part of learning and part of – ultimately succeeding. When you can internalize this, true learning, that no school can teach, will begin.

Robert Kiyosaki, in his book Rich Dad Poor Dad speaks of a conversation that he had with his “rich dad,” paraphrased as:

“you will go bankrupt at least 4 to 5 times before you become a millionaire, why not get started immediately?”

Let’s not waste any time in celebrating our failures!

2) COMPREHEND YOURSELF, COMPREHEND YOUR FAILURES

Evaluate and learn from your past mistakes. If something didn’t work, then learn to identify why. In other words, make it a point to comprehend what worked and what didn’t. If you have a comprehension of why some venture failed, then you can learn how to avoid the mistake again and try another method. Change comes from mistakes and change puts you on your way. Don’t repeat your mistakes. It’s not a just a cliche when George Santayana said, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

3) COLLABORATE

Surround yourself with people that will allow you to fail.

Don’t know who that is? Let’s look at an example:

A newly hired Executive Vice-President made a horrible business decision for his company. His decision was so bad, it cost the company over $2 million dollars. After all was said and done he knew he was going to get fired. He waited for the CEO to make the call. When the phone finally rang, he went to the CEO’s office and dug his heels in, waiting for the inevitable. As expected, the Executive VP was asked why he made the decision he made. He was asked, “What information did you use?” and, “How could the results of the decision turned out differently?” As the meeting came to a close the Executive VP was utterly confused. He asked, “So, you’re not going to fire me?” The CEO replied, “Heaven’s no, I just invested over $2 million dollars in your education!” While that situation is extreme, that CEO is the kind of person you want around you. The principle is the same: collaborate with people that will allow you to fail and appreciate what you’ve learned from your mistakes.

4) COMMIT

You have to commit to yourself, have an iron will that won’t give up! Keep trying, no matter how much or how many times you fail. Don’t stop with failure. Remember what Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up!”

One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake.

In Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich, there’s an illustration about a man who got caught up in the “gold fever” of the time when the U.S. experienced it’s gold-rush. He went west to pursue his dream of becoming wealthy. After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by discovery of the shining ore. But, he needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. So he went home to Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few neighbors of the “strike.” They got together the money he needed for the machinery and it was shipped.

The return in gold proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of the man! Then, something happened… the vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there. They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again, all to no avail.

Finally, they decided to QUIT. They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. This “junk” man called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.” His calculations showed that the vein would be found JUST THREE FEET FROM WHERE THE previous man HAD STOPPED DRILLING! That is exactly where it was found! So the “junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

When you’re committed, you’re willing to stick to your guns and find people to help you along the way. Don’t give up.

Turn failure into success with these 4 steps:

Celebrate, Comprehend, Collaborate, and Commit

As simple as they are, they are not easy. Sometimes your commitment will face anger – if it does, get angry! Let nothing stop you and you will SUCCEED!

The 8 P’s of Success

Every time I try to cook rice, I either end up having mini popcorns or my rice end up turning into a thick paste of porridge. Trust me, I have tried and you can say I haven’t succeeded yet. Success, according to Oxford dictionary, is achieving something that you have been trying to do or get. Though this is not exhaustive, here are the 8 P’s of Success.

1. Purpose

Find and have something worth living and dying for. Your purpose could be raising your children or making a difference in other people’s lives. When you find your purpose, life takes on a new and different meaning.

2. Passion

Sleep, walk, talk and see yourself achieving your vision and goals. Say you want to be a better parent or salesperson, the more you repeat and affirm this to yourself and those near you, the better off you are. Constant affirmations help to remind us of our goals.

3. Persistence

Don’t give up even when you don’t see results. Most of the time, results don’t appear in relation to the efforts you might be putting into achieving your desired goals. The good thing is; something is happening beneath the surface and you need to keep doing your best in order to see your desired results.

4. Practice

Keep working. We have all heard the saying, if at first you don’t succeed; keep trying, again and again. Constant practice helps teach us how to do it better. Make sure you keep going whether there are results or not.

5. Patience

Be patient with those who should (but don’t understand) your vision or goal. And above all, be patient with yourself. Often when people don’t affirm us or fail to recognize and appreciate our efforts, it isn’t cause we are failures. It could be because they don’t understand know how best to encourage or affirm us. Look at it this way. The fact that you are having an umbrella doesn’t stop the rain from falling from the skies! You should, in like manner keep going.

6. People

Have people around you, even those you cannot stand because they will help you to improve. Seek their opinion, listen and soldier on knowing that no man has succeeded in becoming an island. Read books, listen to audio tapes, ask questions and attend motivational speaking engagements.

7. Prayer

Involve God in everything you do by seeking His guidance, provision, wisdom and the grace to keep going on.

8. Plunge in

Launch into what you want to do and just get it done. Do not give procrastination a foothold in your life. Do not wait for the perfect and ideal situation, environment or time. Just go for it and give it your best. Remember, you don’t have to see it on your family tree to attempt it.

The ultimate measure of a successful person is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of crisis and controversies. It in fact builds our character. Birthday Party Guest Lists – 4 Critical Success Factors

Composing a guest list for your kid’s birthday party would seem to be a straight forward process. After all, you’re just inviting family members and your child’s close friend’s right? Well, there are some additional factors that you should take into consideration before slapping together any old guest list.

The Cost Factor

Every additional guest you add increases the cost of the party. Before you know it the tab can add up pretty quickly! You should try to break down the total cost of the party per guest and use that as a guide to limit your expenses.

For example, let’s say that with food, party favors, game prizes, invitations, and everything else the cost per guest comes out to $5. If you have a $50 budget that means you can invite ten people. If you expect a large turnout, it’s probably a good idea to look for ways to drive that cost per guest down.

The Personality Factor

Let’s face it… Some people are just no fun to be around! Don’t hesitate to exclude people from the guest list who will drag the other guests down. The purpose of a birthday party is to celebrate and have fun! If one of the guests is going to spoil it for everyone else, exclude them. This is often a hard decision to make, but I promise your child’s party will be better for it.

Also consider the behavior of the children involved. If one of the kids is consistently rowdy, an instigator, or just plain rude do you really want to deal with them? Chances are they will dominate every party activity and spoil the fun for the other children. If you’re excluding a child based on their behavior, don’t be afraid to explain this to their parents. Chances are they already know there’s a problem.

The Fun Factor

Let’s face it; some people are just more fun to be around than others! This goes for children too. Try to make sure that people like this are sprinkled throughout the guest list (so long as they get along with the others). It’s true that some people really are the life of the party, and those traits start to show at an early age!

The Chemistry Factor

Sometimes people just don’t get along. Try to be aware of any potential personality conflicts before organizing the guest list. Remember, the party is supposed to be FUN for your children. The last thing you want to do is make them feel awkward around someone they don’t like.

You should probably include your child in the planning process so they can clue you in about potential issues. Careful planning now will ensure that your child’s party is a success later!
