What I’ve Learned From Surveying Hundreds of Traders

Just a few months ago, I had a great opportunity to participate in conducting a big survey among breakout traders from all around the world to realize what their biggest struggle was.

To me, it was a pretty exciting project, because breakout trading has been my full-time job for many years (since 2017 I am also running a private breakout hedge fund) and I am always curious to learn more, not just about the breakout trading itself, but also about what other breakout traders are doing or what they might be struggling with.

To be honest, my expectations about the results of the survey were not high.

I kind of expected some “general”, common answers, like:

“My biggest breakout trading challenge is…

… technology…

… my broker…

… lack of strategies…

… robustness…

… etc… “

Just things you would normally expect.

But, to my surprise, all of the above even barely appeared in the survey answers.

Instead of that, the absolute #1 challenge of the majority of breakout traders came out to be…

FALSE BREAKOUTS!

It really made me start thinking and got me kind of smiling at the same time.

How foolish I was not even thinking that there could possibly be any worse challenge for breakout traders than THIS!

It immediately started reminding me of all my past struggles with false breakouts.

Yes, I went through them in the same way any other breakout traders would – and I can fully confirm that – simply said – false breakouts really SUCK.

Their ability to take all your accumulated profits away in literally a few days is almost “magical”. All you need is an unfortunate streak of false breakouts that, unfortunately, can happen quite often.

The frustration and pain they can “reward” a trader with make you sometimes wonder if you should just laugh hysterically, or rather cry shamelessly. Just imagine: for a whole month you have been building your trading equity curve up, to start enjoying the feeling of having a great, profitable month.

Then, on the last day of the month, a streak of false breakouts comes – and all your profit is gone (yes, this happened to me several times, too).

Well, if you have been trading for a while already – I think you get the idea.

So, it’s no surprise that reading all the responses in the survey and realizing how much of a pain false breakouts are to other traders too, I decided to address this serious hurdle a bit and assembled a simple, quick guide on ‘How To Fix False Breakouts Fast’. Besides other stuff, I covered topics like:

  • How fakeouts are the biggest leak of money for breakout traders, including Futures, Stocks, FX, and ETFs;

  • How much money fakeouts could actually be costing you – without you even realizing it;

  • A comprehensive deconstruction of timing – enter breakout trades at the right time and stop costly breakout trading mistakes;

  • 4 proven approaches for slashing fakeouts today – stop them from stealing your money and eating all your profits!

Now – if false breakouts bother you as well, you need to read this. Seriously.

Happy trading!

How Do You Embrace a Growth Mindset?

Have you ever faced a challenge in your business that you couldn’t break from or move forward? Or maybe you’re in a challenging situation, circumstance or condition at this very moment.

Every challenging condition you go through has a silver lining, even if you can’t see it right away. The secret to seeing the value of every struggle is shifting your mindset about the situation.

As human beings, our minds constantly watch the events that happen in our lives. Our mindset determines how we perceive these events and how we react to them.

A fixed mindset involves self-imposed limitations. People with a fixed mindset believe their character, intelligence, and creative abilities are static and they can’t be changed in a meaningful manner. So, if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?

In contrast, people with a growth mindset believe they can grow. And if you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, a growth mindset is what you need.

Here are 5 ways to embrace a growth mindset.

1: Accept your weaknesses

Operating in your comfort zones makes it hard to grow. If you want to succeed, you must stop making excuses as they’ll keep you exactly where you are now.

If you tell yourself, “My business is struggling but I know with hard work it’ll get better,” you’re putting yourself in the right direction for maintaining momentum in your business.

2: Learn to see challenges as opportunities

People with a growth mindset see challenges as an opportunity to learn and grow instead of seeing them as obstacles. They aren’t afraid to push themselves out of their comfort zones; they always embrace the chance to learn regardless of what challenge comes their way.

When was the last time you did something outside your comfort zone? Even if it’s terrifying to put yourself out there, you may realize things may turn out well – better than if you didn’t try.

3: Learn to accept failure

If you learn to accept challenges and see them as opportunities, you also need to learn to accept failure and be willing to take risks. This is because failure is partly growth, and fearing failure will prevent you from doing the best for your business.

You need to accept that no matter how hard you try, sometimes things won’t turn out how you hope.

4: Stop looking for approval and focus on learning

People with a fixed mindset often worry about what others say about their talent and intelligence. To embrace a growth mindset, you need to stop being concerned about what other people think and about getting their approval.

Use your time to improve for your own good, rather than thinking about what others think about you.

5: Learn how to accept and use criticism

Accepting criticism is a way to learn and improve yourself and your business. Smart entrepreneurs encourage feedback, reviews, and ratings. And when they get negative feedback, they use that information to improve their businesses.

Dictionaries Are Important Reference Tools For Writers

It’s the little things that often get overlooked.

Writers feel they have to struggle to find the right word, almost as if the struggle itself somehow makes the discovery valid. But help is at hand, and it’s a lot closer than you think.

I’m talking about reference books, and dictionaries in particular. No matter how you go about the business of writing, reference materials are always important. They’re part of every writer’s toolkit, like a carpenter’s hammer and saw. And just like a carpenter, a writer can use these tools to construct a solid piece of prose, a short story, a poem, an article, a book or some web copy.

Dictionaries have been part of the writer’s palette since Dr. Samuel Johnson created A Dictionary of the English Language way back in the 1750s. Browse the reference section of any library or bookstore and you’ll find dictionaries covering a host of topics: languages, medicine, dreams, fictional characters, scrabble, finance, etc. And then there are rhyming dictionaries, multilingual dictionaries, legal dictionaries, dictionaries of symbols, cultural literacy, biblical imagery, philosophy and so on.

Most mainstream dictionaries have online presences these days, so it’s possible to access them without even reaching across to your bookcase. There are a few more exotic dictionaries out there, too, such as Ambrose Bierce’s The Devil’s Dictionary – a fascinating tongue-in-cheek twist on the concept with some scathing definitions, including:

Wit, n. The salt with which the American humorist spoils his intellectual cookery by leaving it out.

Variations come in all shapes and sizes, with titles like Who’s Who in Shakespeare (or Dickens), collections of this or that, and volumes named A Dictionary of the 20th Century, for instance. Of course, those lazy writers among us need only bookmark the site at Dictionary.com and/or Thesaurus.com to have everything at hand. But there’s something about flipping through a book and landing on a page — particularly one with new words on it — that can’t be equalled.

I have a copy of The New International Webster’s Comprehensive Dictionary. It’s a massive tome, nicely bound with gilt-edged pages. I opened it at random and found this entry:

gyve, n. A fetter for the limbs of prisoners.

Pronounced jive, here’s a word I’d never heard before. Will I use it anywhere else? I’m not sure. But it conjures up a bunch of images. Like a group of convicts, gyve talking. It’s expanding my vocabulary and giving me story ideas at the same time. And that’s just one word on one page.

Forget writer’s block. If you own a good dictionary you’ll never be stuck for a word. You can even create stories or articles out of thin air just by choosing three words at random from different places in the book. They don’t necessarily have to be unfamiliar words, but sometimes putting three unrelated words together can help spark off an idea or two.

I visited Morocco in 2007, and it wasn’t until yesterday that I realised what a chafferer I’d been.

Don’t know what I mean? Then look it up! That’s what dictionaries are for.

What Does it Mean to Be a Hero?

When you were a child, were you inspired by stories of knights, supermen and courageous men and women who did wonderful things and changed the world around them? They were your heroes. You looked up to them, didn’t you? And you admired them and read stories about them late into the night? Weren’t you inspired by their courage and hoped you could grow up brave and strong? Weren’t you thrilled by their exploits and their charisma?

What about now? Who are your heroes? Are they baseball champions or Olympic swimmers? Or are they perhaps explorers and adventurers, crossing the North Pole single-handed or rowing the Pacific in a two-man boat?

What does it mean to be a hero? Is it someone fulfilling an ambition at great personal and physical struggle or is it someone doing something for the good of mankind? And why do we all need heroes – what is it that inspires us about certain people and makes us hold them up as examples of greatness?

The truth is that we look up to people who make a difference to our lives while at the same time overcoming personal struggle and hardship to achieve that goal. We admire their bravery and dedication; we aspire to be as courageous and focused as they are to achieve what they set out to do.

So being a hero isn’t necessarily about achievement only. It’s the effect that their achievement has on the rest of us and what we can learn from the struggle and hardship they underwent. They are what we could call exemplars – they are people who demonstrate high standards of character and dedication and who inspire us to achieve the highest that we can in order to emulate them.

However, being a hero isn’t always front page news or the stuff of films. Being a hero can mean working all the hours under the sun and earning enough to send your children to college so that they can have a better future than you had at their age. It can be as simple as making sure that the elderly people in your area are always warm and well fed, or dedicating yourself to improving community amenities and overcoming all the obstacles that get thrown up in your path.

So you can achieve great things like win an Olympic gold medal by being fast on your feet and become an icon. Or you can achieve great things through strength of character and perseverance, and become a hero. You can doubt your ability to complete the journey, but having the strength of character and purpose to overcome your own fears about completing it – that’s the stuff of heroes.

That’s what inspires others – that you falter and doubt your ability to carry on, but that you then pick yourself up again stronger than before, doubly committed to your goal, and you press on to the end.

Get Your Charcoal Grill Going In No Time

The smell and the taste of food that been cooked outdoors is amazing. Yet waiting for it to all take place can be a bit annoying. You can cut that wait time with a quality BBQ charcoal starter product. This will help you to get that grill started up and heating in no time at all. Once it is heated, then you can add your food items.

If your grill often sits there without being used due to the amount of time it takes for the briquets to heat up, you need to change that. You will use it more once you have BBQ charcoal starter at your disposal. Once you use it the first time, you will realise the time it is going to save you. It doesn’t alter the smell of the food while it is cooking or the way the food tastes.

Avoid Frustrations

However, it is going to help you avoid common frustrations. You aren’t going to struggle with trying to get things heated up enough for the coals to heat your food. You aren’t going to struggle with the wind ruining your plans. You can buy BBQ charcoal starter for a low price and it is worth the cost of it.

Some products you just use by pouring on the briquets and others you use with a hands-free option. These BBQ charcoal starter can be safer for you to use as it can keep your hands away from the flames. The last thing you want is a fun BBQ to turn into an occasion where you have injuries. Such problems can happen quickly so the best option is to prevent them.

With the right tools, you can feel more confident using your charcoal grill too. You aren’t going to be stressed about trying to time when the items you are cooking will be done. You will know it is going to heat up quickly and evenly so you can get the items on the grill in very little time.

Safe Use and Storage

Make sure you use BBQ charcoal starter only as it is directed on the container. Make sure you don’t use too much of it or use it in an open area as a fire or injuries can occur. Proper storage for the unused product is also important. Make sure you keep it in a cool place out of the reach of children and pets.

Being able to get your grill hotter without hassles or delays is going to encourage you to use it more often. You may be tempted to upgrade to a gas grill but the food isn’t going to taste the same. Once you know you can get it all in motion in less time, there is no reason to upgrade. Not when you have a great grill already in place.

Select a Product

The quality of what you will get in terms of safety and saved time will vary though. It depends on what you buy. Don’t be in a rush to buy any BBQ charcoal starter product. Take your time to research the price, the effectiveness, and how well it holds up. You may not know anyone who has one but you can read information from other customers found online.

Look for a product made from quality materials that will last for a long time. You also want a product that is easy to use. It doesn’t matter how great it is if you are going to struggle to get it to work for you. Don’t put off getting such a product as you are missing out on great tasting food from your grill if you do!

10 Characteristics of an Interesting Book

Writing a book is a difficult task, and the one the thing many writers get caught up in is this:

what makes a novel great? What are the components of a book that draws people in and gets them to really read the story? Here are the

10 essential characteristics of an interesting book.

Title: A fantastic title is what makes people remember the book, and is a symbol of the books overall message. One of my favorite titles ever is It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

Great Cover: The cover is what draws people in. While this comes in to play later in processing, it is still an important element to consider.

Compelling Characters: The characters in a novel are everything. Without creating interesting, believable characters, readers lose interest within the novel very quickly.

Fantastic Dialogue: Dialogue is a huge part of any novel, and if your characters don’t interact with personality and interest, then your readers won’t care about what they have to say.

An Interesting Struggle: Novels, by definition, have some kind of conflict within them, whether it is internal or external. A great novel requires an interesting struggle. One that is not impossible, but not so easy as to bore the readers.

No Fluff or “Filler Writing”: Many new writers to the game have this particular problem. Readers do not want to listen to parts of the story put in simply to fill in space. Unless it’s important to the world or the overall theme, “filler content” is an amateur mistake to make.

Thought Provoking: A great novel is one that provokes thought, and really leaves you with something you didn’t have before. A novel such as this is The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which gives you a new perspective to consider many parts of the world around us. It also gives us the answer to life: 42.

Complete and Fulfilling Story: Nothing is worse than a story that leaves you unsatisfied. While it’s a great thing to be left wanting more, when it all comes down to it, readers need to know who did and didn’t get the girl, who the bad guy is, and whether or not the hero returns home.

Room to Grow: Your novel should always have room to grow. A great novel is one that leaves some part of the characters a mystery, or one with a story or ending that is somewhat open to interpretation. While you don’t want to leave plot holes or wide gaps of logic, leaving a little space to make your readers ponder creates a thought provoking experience.

Satisfying Ending:One of my favorite ending methods is when the character ends up losing his or her memory, or his or her ability to change things, and instead, writes a book about it and sends it back to the person that it was written for. Creating a compelling story ending is essential. After, all, novels are a journey, and what people remember most is when they finally arrive at their destination.

There are tons of elements and criteria that make up a “great” novel, but I find that these 10 are really the most essential.

When is it Too Late to Save a Marriage?

The Key to Save a Marriage Is Commitment, Not Feelings of Love

Many couples struggle through marital problems for years before finding a resolution. Sometimes this means divorce, other times it means that they have finally found a way to bring peace back into the relationship. But how do you know when it is too late to save a marriage?

There is no easy answer to that question, and there is no one answer that is right for every couple. As mentioned above, some couples struggle for years, but are then able to stay together and be happy.

When trying to save a marriage, a common problem is that one or both partners just throw their hands up and quit when things are not what they expected them or wanted them to be.

There is no way to save a marriage unless both parties are working to do just that. It doesn’t matter as much what the issues in the marriage are as much as it matters what both the husband and the wife are willing to do to fix it.

Many times pride and bitterness stop the husband or wife from being willing to reach out in any meaningful way. This usually results in the person just shutting down while relying on their partner to do 100% of the work to fix the problem.

Even if the other person is totally to blame for the issues in the marriage, it still takes both partners to fix it. Some would complain that it’s not fair that they should have to work to fix what they didn’t break. While it might not be fair, that person needs to figure out if they are willing to throw their marriage away over an issue of pride.

Sometimes all it takes to save a marriage is a little effort from each party. That doesn’t mean that the marriage will be fixed overnight, but each little act of kindness, respect and thoughtfulness will build on each other.

One day, the husband and wife will realize that they are once again in love with their spouse.

Again, depending on what caused the problem and other factors, it could take years to get past the issue. But it is never too late to save a marriage as long as both partners are willing to continue to try.

Even when you might feel desperate and the situation might seem hopeless, it is never too late. There are plenty of stories from couples that have made it through some fiery trials of infidelity, dishonesty and broken trust.

They will tell you that they thought there was no way to save their marriage, but they just weren’t willing to throw it all away. They stayed and, even when it didn’t feel good, they kept trying. Today, many of those couples are happier than they ever were and they now know that together they can weather any storm.

Sometimes what it takes to save a marriage is simply realizing that it’s not always about feelings of love and passion. Sometimes, it’s just about the commitment that you made to stay together through good times and bad.

If there is any part of each of you that wants to make it work, then it is not too late.

Choosing Topics For Your MLM Website Or Blog – Part 1

Before you start tapping away at your keyboard and generating content for your MLM website or blog, the first thing you need to figure out is what you’re going to write. What topics are you going to cover with you’re writing? Which questions are you going to answer? What kinds of help and resources are you going to offer people?

Most importantly, what are you going to write that will make you stand out from the crowd of other MLM businesses marketing online?

Topics for People Already in MLM

It may seem odd to offer tips and advice on your MLM website or blog for people already in an MLM business, especially if those people are in a different MLM than the one you promote. But, it actually does make sense to help those people for two reasons.

First, by answering questions with which people already in MLM are struggling, you eventually become a recognized expert in the field, which gives you credibility and visibility when new prospects search for an MLM business to join. Second, by offering sound advice that actually works, you will attract some people already in an MLM into your business. This conversion rate will be small but may contribute significantly to your group volume.

So how can you write helpful advice for people already in an MLM business? Write articles and blog posts that answer these 9 questions.

1. What is the biggest problem you struggle with in your own MLM business?

2. What is the biggest problem people in your group struggle with?

3. What problems are being addressed and discussed on your team or company’s training calls?

4. What problems are being addressed on webinars and teleconferences offered by other groups outside your team and company?

5. What problems do you see MLMers struggling with that are not being addressed at all?

6. What problems are specific to your chosen method of prospecting (three-way calling, online MLM marketing, home parties)?

7. Where have you found the best answers and resources to solve these problems?

8. What are the most common questions asked by MLM newbies in online forums or on “getting started” teleconference trainings?

9. What will be the most important problems that need to be solved in MLM in the near or far future?

Bonus Round

Analyze a bunch of people out there answering questions and solving MLM problems. Are their solutions really working? Are they offering solutions that actually ring true to you or are they just parroting the same old lines that you have heard in a hundred MLM seminars and trainings? If you keep hearing the same stuff, then look outside the MLM industry. Is there someone in another niche or industry who is offering solutions that might work for MLM?

Topics to Attract People Looking for the Right MLM

The second group of people you want to write for is the group looking for the right MLM opportunity. These people may not yet be sure that MLM is right for them, but have heard enough about the possibilities of MLM to be actively doing research. For these people, you want to write content that answers questions like these:

1. Is MLM right for you?

2. What kind of personality types excel in MLM?

3. What does it really take to successfully do MLM in terms of hours and dollars?

4. How many different ways would someone be able to market your MLM business or product?

5. How do different compensation plans compare?

6. How does one investigate the track record and trustworthiness of various MLM companies?

7. What kind of training is available for people who join an MLM, and for people who join your team?

8. Does a new signup have to prospect the same way his or her upline does? The same way you do?

9. What are the qualities of a successful MLM business builder (one who really earns a paycheck that covers all the bills, and more)?

Bonus Round

What kinds of questions can you answer on your website or blog that will help you pre-qualify prospects before they ever dial your phone number or zip you an email? What can you tell people about your business that helps them decide whether they want to take the next step or not? Here are topics that will help you pre-qualify leads from your website or blog:

– MLM is not a job, it’s a business

– MLM is not a “get rich quick” scheme, ever

– MLM is not for snobs but for people with open minds

– Some of the most successful MLM business owners were the hardest bring in

– You will work just as hard at MLM as in any other small business, but MLM will pay you more money and for a longer period of time

– MLM doesn’t require you to have a bunch of skills, but having a few skills and a lot of willingness help you go far

Get the picture?

To Attract People Not Yet Looking for MLM

This third group is a whole different kettle of fish and one that I’m not going to try to cover in this article. However, once you have been writing for the first two groups for a while, and have developed a unique voice that people find interesting, then you might consider writing for this third group.

To attract people who are not actively looking to join an MLM but “would be perfect for your opportunity,” you have to adopt a whole new style of writing. You have to write pieces that both speak to this group’s current interests and tempt them to explore new interests, such as MLM. This kind of writing is far trickier and requires a lot more homework, so we’ll save that set of instructions for another day.

In the meantime, learning to get online and writing for the first two groups will give you plenty of homework.

Developing an Individual Writing Process

Developing an individual writing process is key to your success as a writer. Studies of struggling writers show that one of the reasons they struggle is that they focus on only one aspect of writing.

So what is the writing process? First it is important to note that there is no such thing as “the writing process”. Yes, there is a writing process that embraces the notion that there are certain essential steps that successful writers employ when writing but that process varies greatly depending on the writer and then individual writers also vary their process according to the writing task at hand. That means that there is no such as “the writing process” but that a personal, individual writing process which you adjust to the varying circumstances of your writing can be tremendously helpful.

However, before you can begin to individualize your writing process and then adjust it to different tasks, you must learn more about the theory behind the writing process.

The theory of writing process begins with prewriting or invention stage. This is when you may need to do brainstorming, research, and planning to get started with your writing project. This is the stage that struggling writers spend the least time on and experienced writers spend much more time as they know that more attention and thought at this stage can save time and effort later. This stage may have a lot to show for it in terms of prewriting and research or it might take place primarily inside the writer’s brain. This depends on the individual writer, the complexity of the task, and the familiarity of the writer with the task.

Only after spending time at the prewriting stage do writers move on to drafting. This is where the actual writing takes place but encompasses more than one draft and several sessions of writing spread over time. Drafting focuses on simply getting words on paper and emptying the brain of ideas for this project.

Writers move on to revision after those early drafts have filled out and developed some substance. It is during the multiple drafts of the revision stage that the writing project shapes into something resembling the intended final project. The paper is not yet done but it looks and feels like the intended genre, the ideas are fully developed and the organization is functional.

Then writers move on the editing stage where they attend to correctness issues including cleaning up spelling, grammar, word choice, and polishing the writing. This is the correct time to deal with these issues as concentrating on them earlier in the writing process will slow down the development of ideas.

After editing, writers should seek out feedback for the final stage of the writing process to determine what further revision or editing might be necessary to complete the writing project. Feedback should be sought from skilled readers familiar with either the subject matter or the type of writing project so they can offer more informed review.

While each individual writing process will include some general variation of these elements it is important for writers to recognize that an effective writing process reflects their own individual strengths, weaknesses, and work habits. The writing process should also vary according to the project as well. Obviously a new, complex project will demand much more during prewriting and invention than a familiar topic and comfortable project genre.
