Visualization, Mystic or Mastery?

It was a sunny August day some years ago when a young man with black shoulder length hair stepped onto the karate kumite tournament mat in front of a large audience. It was his first karate tournament. He had trained in karate for several years previously and was a senior grade.

However, what makes this story so unusual is the fact that he had not trained in karate seriously for 5 years beforehand. Yet, he not only won his kumite match but also the tournament in his category against experienced fighters who tried to stop him from doing so. But he managed to eliminate many of these good fighters on his way to overall karate champion. So what then was the one element that helped him achieve this? Visualization.

Back in the 1970s, athletes in the Soviet Union began to practice a technique that soon caught on across the world. These athletes would purposely think about detailed performances on the field. They would let the images play in their minds and practice mentally in their down time while their bodies were resting. The art of visualization actually helped these athletes to hone their reflexes and perform better on the field, and ever since then, it has become a popular technique for many martial artists and athletes across many varieties of sports. Why? Because it works.

You see, our brains are supercomputers that are specially designed to help us to accomplish our goals on a day-to-day basis. By harnessing the power of your mind and learning how to tap into it so that we can start to survive in the world. Visualization can turn your goals into reality. Our subconscious mind is a powerful place, and when it is working in our favour rather than against us, the potential for us to achieve is unlimited.

You don’t have to have a good imagination for visualization to work, although it may help. But what you do need to do is to be able to picture a scenario in your mind’s eye and to see that scenario going as well as it possibly could. In doing so, you are preparing your mind for events that are to come, and because it has run through this event already and has seen how it should best be performed, it has already become primed to respond to the future events in a productive and helpful way.

If the brain can see your plan, then it can make the necessary allowances to help you to achieve your goals Visualization works in a way that repetitive words and lists and plans don’t. Plus, it works with people who have physical limitations giving them options in self-protection using visualization techniques it just requires forethought and practice although, there are no absolutes.

Be aware of your surroundings – open your eyes and put the phone away

From self-defence point of view consider the following; No special training is needed for this. Picture in your mind someone who wants to do you harm even kill you or a loved one, not a nice thought is it? Next, picture in your mind’s eye how you are going to protect yourself. Because, what you see on TV or read in the newspapers regarding random attacks and assaults even murders on innocent persons perpetrated by other people may just as easily be you tomorrow. You must be of the mindset that you will defend yourself or loved one at all costs. Have the mindset of a warrior cold-blooded, ruthless and train accordingly.

Practically, think of various scenarios and work out how to deal with that situation. Then physically drill it with or without a partner using the principle of slow practice visualizing each step this will also prepare you mentally should a situation arise. Please understand like any other form of training visualization will require commitment, effort of application and forethought a small price to pay for the overall benefits visualization training can give you even more so, if you consider the alternative to not preparing mentally for a violent encounter. This article is only a small overview on the subject of visualization, there is very little that we can’t achieve if we simply begin to harness the untapped potential within our own minds unlock your subconscious mind and tap into your own powers through visualization. Remember, every journey starts with a first step. Why not begin now.

Stay Safe.

Adult Figure Skating, an Introduction

Some of us started as kids and have stayed in the sport ever since. What often seems to happen with this group is that they often are forced to take a break due to lack of time during major life events such as starting university or work. Alternatively they may have to relocate to an area which lacks sufficient resources for figure skating such as Tunisia or Borneo. Inevitably though, the minute they are back within reasonable distance of an arena, like migratory birds, they find their way back home to the ice.

Some of us start as adults with either no or little childhood skating experience. This group is a truly inspirational bunch. There is a comfort level with the ice that those of us who started young have and tend to take for granted. For example, we have learned how to take a fall and most of the time feel pretty solid on our feet when doing basic elements. Not so the adult beginner who can take nothing for granted. The minute they step on the ice, they have stepped right out of their comfort zone, things like stopping and changing direction are not necessarily things they have control over. Falls can be especially rough. When you are little; you fall from a smaller distance, weigh less and don’t hit the ice as hard. As an adult the inverse is true. Sooner or later you will probably run afoul of your toe picks and do a belly flop. This is nothing to be ashamed of, it happens to skaters at every level. In Canada we have a TV series called Battle of the Blades in which retired pro hockey players learn to skate as pairs or dance skaters with elite figure skaters. The hockey players certainly know how to skate but they also are tripping over the picks until they get used to them.

For safety reasons a helmet is highly recommended, so now you look like an over grown 5 year-old and even more awkward.

But victory is truly sweet the first time you come to a full and complete stop exactly where you wanted to stop or you nail that pesky left outside three turn. What’s more, your adult training buddies will be cheering you on with the same enthusiasm reserved for a world champion landing some mega-impossible jump combo! What’s even crazier is that you will start to dream bigger… mowhawks, waltz jumps, one foot spins… there is a whole world of elements out there for you to conquer! But for now how about a celebratory hot chocolate at the local coffee shop?

There is another group of adult skaters that are also truly impressive, the ones that start to skate because their kids started to skate. They have to go through all the rites of passage mentioned above as well as living with their smug offspring who invariably are progressing at a faster rate. It certainly helps them to understand the sport much better and they are often still skating long after their child has moved on to other activities.

Then there are those who do it all… learn to skate as a child, compete, coach, get married, have kids of their own. Their children and sometimes even spouse may even have joined them on the ice.

No matter what our skating experience is we are all joined by our completely irrational love and passion for our sport. Adult competitions are characterized by a strange mix of fierce competitiveness and deep camaraderie on and off the ice

Music Review of Achillea – The Nine Worlds

In all the years I’ve been reviewing music (13 and counting) one of my favorite labels has always been Sequoia Records. David and Steve Gordon have consistently released a plethora of cool music, their own (including the bestselling Sacred Drum series of Native/World music) and that of numerous other artists, with dozens of titles available. In fact, the first CD I ever received and reviewed, Music of the Tarot , came from Sequoia. As if their music wasn’t enough, the Gordon’s have a strong “green” ecology ethic, and it feels really fabulous to support what they do.

Having said that, I must add that the Gordon’s have recently stepped up their game. As evidence, I present Achillea: The Nine Worlds, by Jens Gad, a core member of Enigma, one of my very favorite groups of the past fifteen years. Those acquainted with Enigma’s music will instantly find Gad’s sound deliciously familiar. A master of the guitar as well as a studio wizard, Gad’s Achillea: The Nine Worlds is gorgeous, sensuous, hypnotic, juicy and full of delightful surprises.

Signature dance rhythms, wicked bass and awesome synthesizers create an awesome accompaniment to Gad’s guitar. The most brilliant facet of all is the classical vocals of Helene Horlyck. Gad weaves all of these musical elements into Achillea, The Nine Worlds, a worthy addition to the library of Enigima fans, or anyone who appreciates world-beat dance grooves and musical adventures of the spirit. Free sound samples are available on Sequoia’s website. Check out the whole catalog, they have much to offer the discerning listener.

The Three Badfinger Songs With A Beatles Connection

Badfinger were one of the first groups signed to the Beatles’ new record label Apple in the late 1960s. In a previous incarnation, they were known as The Iveys and had enjoyed a moderate hit in Europe with the song Maybe Tomorrow. Despite this, the Apple hierarchy decided that the Iveys as a band name was not in keeping with the group’s new power-pop direction and was considered trite for the times. The Beatles road manager Neil Aspinall stepped in and suggested the new name Badfinger (allegedly a reference to the Beatles song With A Little Help From My Friends, which had boasted a working title of Bad Finger Boogie).

Badfinger’s association with The Beatles at that time gave them great kudos, but was also to dog them somewhat as comparisons with the fab four became repetitive and wearisome for the principal songwriters, Pete Ham and Tom Evans. They went on to enjoy some success in the US over the ensuing three or four years, but became hamstrung by the poor management contracts they signed along the way. The endless stream of negative ramifications following on from these signings caused huge tensions within the band and proved toxic to their career.

The first of the three Badfinger songs to have a direct Beatles connection gave them their biggest UK hit:

* Come And Get It – from the album Magic Christian Music, the song was written by Paul McCartney and the eventual recording was almost a mirror image of McCartney’s demo version on which he played all the instruments. It made top ten throughout the world, landing them with a ‘new Beatles’ tag (for better or for worse).

* No Matter What – from the album No Dice, initially produced by the Beatles roadie Mal Evans, until final production was completed by one of the Beatles regular engineers since 1966, Geoff Emerick. There was no doubt they’d achieved a much heavier sound on here than anything they’d done as The Iveys. An outstanding lead vocal from Pete Ham, which drew favourable comparisons with Lennon and many other, heavy rock exponents of the time such as Free’s Paul Rodgers and Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan.

* Day After Day – from the 1971 album Straight Up, produced initially by George Harrison whose involvement was suddenly curtailed by his Concert For Bangladesh commitments. The final production credit went to Todd Rundgren. To my ear, it sounds as though the track’s lucid slide guitar can only belong to George.

Stiff New Penalties for Misclassification of Independent Contractors

There has been a trend in recent years for companies to treat workers as independent contractors in order to avoid the administrative responsibilities and extra costs applicable to employees (payroll taxes, workers’ compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, overtime pay, and various employee benefits). In response, both the Internal Revenue Service and state agencies have stepped up compliance audits to check whether businesses are properly classifying their workers. An employer who has made incorrect classifications faces an array of governmental fines and penalties, as well as liability to the misclassified workers.

California has raised the stakes with a new law, effective January 1, 2012, which adds Sections 226.8 and 2753 to the Labor Code. Section 226.8 prohibits any person or employer from willfully misclassifying an individual as an independent contractor, or from making any charges or compensation deductions (e.g., for goods, materials, or space rental) to such individual if it would be unlawful to make such charges or deductions to an employee. Section 226.8 imposes penalties of $5,000 to $25,000 for each violation.

The law does not specify how often a “violation” is deemed to occur, leaving open the possibility that multiple penalties could be assessed with regard to a single worker. A willful misclassification is defined as one that is “voluntary and knowing.” It is not clear how this standard will be interpreted by the courts.

Section 226.8 also requires any employer found to have violated the law to display prominently on its website for one year a specified notice relating to the violation.

Violations of the law by licensed contractors will be reported to the Contractors’ State License Board, which will initiate disciplinary action against the contractor.

Under Section 2753, a person who, for money or other valuable consideration, knowingly advises an employer to treat an individual as an independent contractor to avoid employee status for that individual shall be jointly and severally liable with the employer if the individual is found not to be an independent contractor. This provision can be expected to impact outside advisors such as accountants and human resources consultants. Employees advising their employer and attorneys providing legal advice are excluded from liability under Section 2753.

Compliance with the new law is complicated by the fact that the law does not provide a clear test as to whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor. Under pre-existing law, a worker generally is considered an employee if the principal has the power to direct and control the manner and means in which the work is performed. However, various other factors will be taken into account, with different tests under California and federal law, necessitating a fact-intensive analysis for each case.

One compliance strategy for a business that wants to avoid the burdens of employment administration and the risks of improper classifications is to secure workers through a separate services company, which employs the workers provided to the business, as opposed to having the business directly retain independent contractors.

In any event, companies who want to use independent contractors should consult with legal counsel, given the difficulty of making proper classifications and the potentially steep costs of failing to do so. Obtaining competent professional advice can reduce the likelihood of incorrect classifications, and also can give an employer a basis for maintaining that a misclassification was not “willful.” In addition, carefully prepared agreements with contractors and other appropriate documentation (e.g., a contractor’s business license and proof of insurance held by the contractor), while by no means determinative, can help a company to substantiate the legitimacy of an independent contractor relationship.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – A Review

Mary Shelley, an all-rounder, who’s a novelist, travel writer, dramatist, author, essayist, and daughter to a feminist and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft, wrote an amazing piece of a gothic themed literature named “Frankenstein”, the first science fiction novel. Frankenstein is one of the best-presented works on gothic and horror story plots which provides a well-elaborated linkage between society odds and evens. The novel contains a number of framing devices, stories surrounded by other stories in an exotic manner. Shelley wrote this novel in the early eighteenth century when the revolution was in full swing, things were changing and advancement was at the peak. Hence, being a woman, it was quite difficult for Mary Shelley to dominate in the society against the odds. Moreover, she explains her journey and experiences using rhetorical devices that can make ease for readers to grasp the central idea of the text.

“Frankenstein is a feminist critique of science”, this can’t be ideally said to be true but critically Frankenstein shows a relationship between feminine roles and scientific developments. There are no majority female characters in this novel thus, it can’t be said that Frankenstein was a feminist vision of text. But on the other hand, there are a number of events that took place in the body of the novel that points out the feminist perspective of the author. Mary Shelley became the first woman of the nineteenth century, who stepped forward and wrote something using the symbolic tool. She used the character of Frankenstein to portray the conditions of those women who were obliged to play roles in opposition to the culture and demonstrated societal problems using her words.

Mary Shelley constructs a relationship between science and literature using the base ground of metaphors, images, thoughts, and much more to elaborate the essence of women and destruction in society using neo-classicism. She uses the ancient principles and classical style of literature to establish her point in front of the audience. She emphasizes on emotions and imaginations to define several implications created by the revolution that time; for this, she uses metaphors that were sexist and against male dominance. Frankenstein pursuits modern science along with gender politics where she discusses aggressive and dominant male legacy. Furthermore, the author of her novel created a male monster to display the satanic sight of the male dominants and violence in the society that attacks the female sex in all spheres of life.

Moreover, when science is brought up in a relationship with fiction and society, evolution is the process which creates a diverse concept of production reproduction, human behavior, and organisms. Mary Shelley in her novel confirms the most known theory of evolution proposed by Charles Darwin.

The theory elaborates the formation of a living organism in this world. Living things are created by the natural combination of genetic and inherited orders, disorders, and hormones. Mary Shelley uses the base of Darwin theory in order to present her views on the origin of species and to replace God with science. The author presents a conflict between types of science. She divides science into two major categories and termed them as “Bad Science” and “Good Science”. She highlights several implications that are being caused for women especially with the development mode of science. Similarly, a conflict between love and revenge is also visible in this text, when the monster wants love and needs to be accepted by the society but instead, is rejected and declined by the people which leads to the creation of a feeling of revenge and hatred in the monster’s objective against the human life and this gives acceleration to the destruction. If a comparison is carried out, the monster is the women who fights against societal problems and norms to enhance her own image in the humanitarian society but instead is tied up with a number of constraints. Frankenstein’s approach in this novel is described as an attempt made by strong women to gain power and destroy the civilization. This develops a causation relationship between love and revenge.

Hence, Mary Shelley’s scientific ideology is carried out to dominate female in the environment, during revolution necessarily. She wants the society to understand her experience as a woman and to appreciate her value (specifically the gender) on the front.

Of Melodies and Memories

“During my initial tryst with music, recording in Rahman sir’s studio was definitely a stand out moment. It still is, honestly. When I stepped into that place, I was mesmerized. His long-time friend and guitarist, John Anthony was around. He cleared all our doubts about the technicalities and instruments. What a learning experience that was! Rahman sir wasn’t in town. But the day we were leaving, he returned. We stayed back to meet him and he was so humble and encouraging. That day is one of the most memorable days of my life. By this time, I developed a much deeper understanding of music. So, every time I listened to Ilayaraja sir or Rahman sir’s songs, I experienced something new and fresh. As a regular listener, you only hum and enjoy it. But when you start exploring music, you understand all the ragas and charanas. I was soon also introduced to metal, jazz and other such genres, which I didn’t know existed. It was an eye-opener for me. ‘There is so much in music, so much and I know so little’, I thought. You won’t believe, but even today, I go by the same policy. This whole idea of being famous or being a music director doesn’t get to my head. I know that there’s so much more to explore. Looking at the work outside in the world, I always push myself to do better. Our music here is so basic and simple. We’re often stuck with the mainstream format of duet and item songs, which I’m not very fond of. I try and work for movies with a strong story and which gives me scope to tell a tale using music.

Since then, I have been able to compose for a few movies and it’s been a pleasure. When Pelli Choopulu released, both Tharun and I didn’t have too many expectations. It was more a product of our passion and hard work. But it clicked off! I think, when you love something and put your heart and soul into it, things happen the right way. But throughout, it’s important for one to be ready to learn new things. I often come across aspiring musicians, who call me and ask me for a chance or recommendation. I don’t like that at all. I mean, you can’t ask me for a chance because you want to be something. You need to try and experiment with your music, play different songs and send me some fresh tunes. If I think it’s good, I’d call you myself. I’m always open to having new people on board. That’s the tip I’d like to give to all the upcoming musicians – try harder and don’t demand. Enjoy what you do, you’ll find a way soon.”

English Language: Whatever Happened To The Abbreviation For The Word ‘Continued’?

Funny… Ha-Ha-Ha… No… Not Funny!

The ELL adult student stepped up to read out loud in place of the student who was absent for their Speaker Graduation Presentation. The student read with confidence until the word at the end of the PowerPoint on the screen that read, Cont. The student pronounced the word, ‘C-nt’ (with the u in the middle), the roomful of adults and students roared laughing. The perplexed student looked at his audience feeling verbally incompetent. That exact situation happened to me with a different word years ago when I was learning English. I’ve never forgotten that experience. Oh my goodness!

What happened in this setting?!

Here’s what happened:

Years ago in our English Language we used to abbreviate the word Continued in its grammatical form as Cont’d. With time, some have adopted the abbreviation Cont to mean the word Continued, especially on PowerPoint Presentations.

Notice that originally there was an apostrophe between the letters ‘t’ and ‘d’. This indicated that the letters ‘inue’ were between the ‘t’ and the ‘d’.

Today we see Cont on PowerPoint Presentations at workshops, seminars, webinars, professional speaker presentations, and even college classes. Cont looks like a word, so we have to ask, what happened to the abbreviation?

Understandably the English Language is an evolving entity, however, there are some aspects in its usage that we may be able to keep the semantics of old and avoid embarrassing moments for our adult students who are sincerely and amazingly making an effort to keep up.

In summary and grammatically speaking, this grammatical feature of the use Cont’d may be a better fit for clarification and correct grammatical use.

So, what will your next PowerPoint Presentation display to your audience?
