Formal Education Versus Informal Learning – What Is the Best Mode of Acquiring Knowledge?

Acquiring new ideas and garnering efficiency in the existing knowledge and skills is the key to an effective learning process. According to the experts, informal learning is the ideal way to achieve this end. With the growing dependence on technology, the collaborative aspects in education have gained momentum. The formal training in a traditional classroom set up, where the entire training process is controlled by the trainer is substituted by informal mode. In the later, the knowledge delivery process is initiated as well as controlled by the learners.

There has always been a debate as to which process of training is more effective to attain the best result. Normally, in formal process, goals and objectives are pre defined and hence constricted within limited industry-specific things. On the contrary, in an informal scenario, learners have the freedom to pick up something of his interest and pursue its study through various informal channels.

In case of formal education, study material and structural model of the curriculum set by the trainers or the course co-ordinators. In short, a formal process is conducted within a defined timeline, where learners have to have a specific skill set to attend the training programs. On the successful completion of the training programs, students are rewarded with certificates. Being pre-planned the process of learning is more structured. Corporate organizations with specific set of goals and objectives, arrange such training programs. They follow a clear benchmark in a structured system, against which the performance of the employee is measured.

Unlike the formal process, informal environment never offers a structure or scheduled program. It can be pursued any time, as and when the learners encounter a specific need. Nowadays, informal learning is also well accepted in corporate organizations and academic institutions. Learners can join different discussion forums online and can share their views about different subjects and topics. In this way, the area of knowledge is widened with new scope of training and knowledge emerging out almost every day.

With technology changing and improving at a rapid pace, information available through traditional resources such as books, become obsolete. Over a period of time, peer-to-per interaction comes on the center stage and presently, it has become the preferred mode of education.

Formal learning in is conducted in the organizations through seminars, conferences, training programs, and so on. In most cases, the purpose of formal educational process is to ensure performance improvement of the employees. In addition, it also helps learners’ to increase their employment opportunities.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn coupled with industry specific discussion forums, blogs and groups have offered steadfast platform to conduct informal process of education with ease. As a result, informal learning is being viewed more seriously in recent years.

However, the success of a training program depends on how effectively its goals and objectives are met. Both the process are effective in their own way and can bring best results if used in a right way.

The Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU Setting in This Nikon DSLR

This is an article about the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU and the RECENT SETTINGS MENU. The reason I put those two together is they are both relatively short and so it is easy to put them into one article. The playback menu controls how the camera both stores and looks at the pictures or videos that you have taken. So, if we go into the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU the first option is delete. Now, of course you have the delete button at the bottom of the camera on the bottom right at the back, so that is just a different way of accessing that option. The one down below that is the playback folder. This allows you to allocate the folder that is on the SD memory card that the camera shows you when you press the playback button. When you put the SD card in and format it then a folder will be created so that all the pictures and all the videos go into that folder. Once you have created 999 files whether they be images or videos or edited images which go back into that folder, then a new folder is automatically created and so this is the point at which you decide which folder you want to select from when you press playback. It is worth knowing this because at some point a little way down the line, possibly your card will create another folder and then you may discover that you can not access the pictures that you thought you could. The options here are to see all the pictures, and they will be in a chronological or numeric order, or you can assign certain folders so that you can just see from specific folders. I usually leave it on all because it is just easier but it may be on occasion easier to see it from a specific folder, if you want to look at a specific shoot or specific holiday pictures, then that I one way of doing it.

Next is option in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU is the PLAYBACK DISPLAY OPTIONS. These are really useful and allow you to see the data surrounding that picture on the Liveview screen. It will show you the histograms, both tonal and RGB histograms, and other shooting data. It is very very useful, not least because in the days of film you would have had a notebook and written all of this down. You would have shot and you would have written down the shutter speed and the aperture and the ISO and various other elements which were important to that picture so that you could remember how you did it so that you can do it again. Here the data is attached to the image and you can access that data through choosing the PLAYBACK DISPLAY OPTIONS and here I would recommend that you have the RGB histogram ticked that the shooting data is ticked and the overview is ticked. The highlights is less important, that just shows you the areas where there is essentially no data – in other words it is bright white. That can be useful but it is not as useful as the other three.

The IMAGE REVIEW OPTION in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU refers to the option of having the image appear on the back screen once you have taken it. I tend to shoot single frames then having that review on the back can be quite useful so I tend to leave it switched on. However if you are going to be shooting sport or something that is happening very quickly in front of you then there is no real need for it and you need to bear in mind that it does take battery power.

The AUTO IMAGE ROTATION and ROTATE TALL I leave on and the reason I do that is because they refer to when you take a picture in portrait shape like this. When you go back to review it either on the back screen here or on a computer then it will turn the image so that it is the correct way around when you are looking on a horizontal screen. It is useful it is just worth switching it on and leaving it because there is no reason to change that once you have done it once.

SLIDESHOW in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU gives you the option to see on the back screen pictures as a slideshow. I think probably this is one of those things that you will never use, but it is an option. You can go in and you can select the images that you want to see and also the interval between the frame changes. Is it useful? I do not think so. I suppose you could run it if you attach an HDMI cable to this and had it on a TV screen. It is a way of reviewing your pictures or showing them to other people more easily, but I can not see much point for it beyond that.

RATING again is an option that allows you to go into the camera and rate your pictures. It has a star over it so that you can know which pictures you selected at the time that you think are the best pictures. Again to be honest I would recommend looking at your pictures on a larger screen. It is not something that I would use but it is an option that is there for you. Finally the option to select images to send to your smart device. You can either send every picture that you take to your smart device, or you can choose to select the image that you send to your smart device.

So those are the options in the playback menu and if we just go quickly down now to the very bottom and have a look at the RECENT SETTINGS MENU. Now this in a sense is not a menu in and of itself – it is not something that the camera has provided for you. There are no options in here unless you put them in there or unless you select them from other menus. These are the recent settings, the things that you have looked at and changed recently. I think it is of limited value but it can be useful if you change the settings on your camera so that you want to shoot something specific, you may want to shoot something say with a specific white balance or you might want to choose a particular picture style anything like that, that means that you have changed things in the menus. Then you can go back to recent settings at the end of that shoot and you have a list of things you have changed which you can then change back again. I would say that is probably the most useful it can be. The reason I do not think it is terribly useful is that it only has eight of the 20 options on the screen, so when you are in recent settings you find yourself scrolling down the page in exactly the same way as you would if you were in any of the other menus looking for the setting in its original place. So it does have a limited value but it is there, it can be useful it is sometimes worth referring back to if you’re not quite sure what you may have changed or looked at and inadvertently changed. So, these are the settings in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU.

Whats the Difference Between a New Years Resolution and a SMART Goal?

What’s a New Year’s Resolution? It’s usually something we feel we ought to pay attention to or feel guilty about, and quite often it’s a wish to change something – a habit or the size of our bum! The 2 main problems with New Year’s Resolutions (NYR) are firstly, they are made at a time when lots of things are going on, such as going back to work after the Christmas break, settling the kids back at school after the exciting and somewhat disruptive period, dealing with the backlog of work, post Christmas bills and so on. There is plenty of change going on anyway at this time, so it may not have been the best time for you to make additional changes. Secondly, NYR tend to be a wish or a hope, they are often vague or unreasonable and are quite often made out of guilt rather than out of a specific desire to positively effect a beneficial change or achieve a goal that we believe in. If you never turn your NYR into specific goals that you intend to action, then they are unlikely to happen.

A popular NYR is the ‘I’ll try to stop smoking this year’ offering. But this is vague, it lacks any bite or intention, it is non-specific and feels unlikely to happen. When this year? Why this year? Be gentle with yourself, as the first week back to work after Christmas may not be the best time to quit. This is not an excuse to keep putting it off, but quitting the evil weed may take some preparation and support, ensure these are in place so that once you quit you become a non-smoker.

So if you have already broken your NYR or want to make some TODAY, here are a few guidelines to help you.

1. Be kind to yourself. Having chosen the wrong time to do it – immediately after Christmas, when you are under all kinds of pressure and change, rethink them now to make them more achievable. The sooner you change, the sooner you’ll reap the rewards.

2. Prepare for the change, consider what the change will look like, consider your needs and who can help you. Remember, not everyone will want you to succeed, so choose your counsel wisely. If you want to lose weight, prepare by reading a cook book, buy in good food and prepare it properly so you don’t just come in from a long hard day and eat anything and everything that happens to be in your cupboard. Preparation is a key to healthy eating and to making lasting change.

3. Change your language and make the change come to life. There is world of difference in ‘I am giving up smoking’ to ‘I am a non-smoker.’ Giving up implies just that, that you are missing out on something you like or need. It implies effort and loss. Where as the use of non-smoker is a simple fact, no problem, no need for conversation, end of story. It is specific, positive and the underlying message you send out is ‘I am responsible, I am in control, this is my life and it’s a smoke-free life’

4. Employ the power of WHY and WIIFM. Why will I do this and what’s in it for me? Start by expecting that you will be successful and write down the benefits to you when you succeed. For example – how good will I look when I have lost ten pounds and can wear that slinky size 12 cocktail dress or that designer dinner suit to the Ball? When I am smoke-free and can breathe properly, we can all go cycling as a family in the park and enjoy a picnic on the hill top.

5. Be specific about your goals or changes. By turning a wish or hope into a SMART goal your chances of succeeding increase exponentially. Smart people who want to make changes and achieve goals often use a simple formula, here’s one of the oldest, simplest and most effective (because it works); SMART.

Specific – be specific about the change, the goal and the expectation. People who achieve goals and change know what the success looks like before they start. The more specific and clear the goal is in your mind, the greater the chance of success.

Measurable – the change must be measurable so you can monitor your success. How will you know if you are succeeding and are on the right path, how often will you check or monitor progress? If the goal is specific, then you chart your progress to a successful change or conclusion.

Achievable (Actionable) – The key is, you must be able to take appropriate action to achieve the desired outcome, make sure the goal is real and achievable. Enlist the help of friends or good counsel and put required resources in place to aid your success.

Reasonable – ensure the goal is thought through and that you have a reasonable chance of succeeding. Be honest, specific and believe you can do it. People often talk about running a marathon when in reality their lifestyle and time available just cannot accommodate the training investment required to run one.

Time Bounded – dates and times are vital. Set a date for the success of your goal. Set interim dates to check progress that help keep you on track, motivated and interested. A goal is not something to set and then forget about. Bring it to life, make it real, live it, be it, enjoy it.

6. And finally believe; believe in yourself, believe in the outcome. Create a constant unswerving belief that you are the change and before you know it, the change or goal just happened.

It’s no good hoping to give up smoking, lose weight, learn a new language or participate in a 10km Fun Run unless you are prepared to take action. To help you take action and be effective, use the details above, make the changes as easy as possible and be SMART about it.

Why Quality Leadership Focuses On PLANNING?

Don’t expect to become a quality, effective leader, unless, you are ready, willing, and able, to plan, to lead! One of the reasons, many organizations are witnessing a near – dearth of meaningful leadership, is, these groups, have not created, implemented, and emphasized, a professionally designed, well – considered, relevant, leadership PLANNING program, and system! After over four decades, of identifying, qualifying, training, developing, and consulting to thousands of actual, and potential leaders, I have come to believe, the key to success, is true planning, based on the specific needs, priorities, perceptions, and heritage/ history, of the specific organization. With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, using the mnemonic approach, what this means, and represents, and why it makes such an important difference.

1. Priorities; perceptions; plans: Before planning, a real leader considers, thoroughly, the true priorities, of the specific group. He considers needs, goals, heritage, and the real, as well as perceived hopes, of his constituents. Addressing these perceptions, must become a key, to the strategic, and action plan, used.

2. Listen; learn; leading: Rather than assuming, a great leader takes the time, and makes the effort, to effectively listen, and learn, what others perceive, and desire, so he can proceed with the utmost degree of genuine empathy! Unless this is the process, who is one leading?

3. Attitude; aptitude; attention; action plan: Great leaders proceed with true, positive, can – do, attitudes, as well as developing a relevant, well – developed aptitude, and skill – set! The pay attention to details, etc, and create a quality, action plan, based on an overall, longer – term, strategy!

4. Needs; nuances: You aren’t leading, unless/ until, your plans, address, in a meaningful way, the true needs of the specific group! Every organization has its own, specific heritage, etc, and, thus, a real leader, addresses these nuances!

5. Nerve: Sometimes, a pseudo – leader fears taking necessary action, while a real leader, must proceed, with the nerve, to do, what lesser individuals, are unwilling to do!

6. Integrity: Unless others believe in you, how will you become a leader? Therefore, you must be ready, willing, and able, to proceed, with the utmost dedication, to absolute integrity, rather than taking a path, of least resistance!

7. Navigate: How one plans, determines whether his action plan, is the best one, to navigate the finest course, for the organization!

8. Generate goodwill; growth; good: How will you, generate goodwill, and bring people together? Groups either, undergo, consistent growth, or fail to remain sustainable! Will you focus on what is good, for the group, rather than focusing on your personal/ political agenda, and/ or, self – interest?

Great leadership accompanies well – considered, quality, relevant PLANNING? Are you prepared to become a real leader?

Organizational Policies and Procedures – What You Need to Know

“Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.” (R. Reagan)

Policies and Procedures are two words frequently heard in the business world and there is often confusion between the two concepts.

What is an Organizational Policy?

A Policy defines an outcome; it is a premeditated rule set by a business to guide organizational direction, employees and business decisions, and to regulate, direct and control actions and conduct. Policies can range from a broad philosophy to a specific rule. They are the direct connection between a company’s Vision and its daily operations and the underpinnings to a company’s culture.

What is an Organizational Procedure?

A procedure is a means to an end. Procedures are step by step instructions, prescribing an exact sequence of action. A procedure explains how to and who (which position) will implement the policy. Procedures are specific, factual and succinct. They may include timelines, specific forms to be used and template forms. Procedures assist in eliminating common misunderstandings which can result in costly mistakes.

What is the difference?

Together Policies and Procedures empower a process by providing clear and concise direction necessary for consistent operation. The essential differences are outlined below:

Policies
– General in nature
– Identify company rules
– Explain why rules exist
– Explain when the rule applies
– Describe to whom (what position) it applies
– Explain how it is enforced
– Describe consequences
– Provide guidance for managerial thought and action
– Flexible – allows for discretion

Procedures
– Identify specific and alternative actions
– Explain when to take actions
– Describe emergency procedures
– Include warnings and cautions
– Give examples
– Show how to complete a specific form
– Prescribe how to carry out the action through step by step instruction
– Less flexible – concise and exact sequence of activities

Why does a company need Organizational Policies?

Policies and Procedures (P&Ps) are essential when a company requires consistency in its daily operations. They provide clarity and direction re: accountability. P&Ps assist companies in meeting legal requirements set out by the Employment Standards Act, the Human Rights Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and numerous other compliance requirements.

A properly written policy and/or procedure allows employees to understand their roles and level of responsibility and conduct their job by making decisions within predefined boundaries. By implementing P&Ps, management can provide guidance to employees without needing to micromanage, freeing managers to focus on strategic thought.

P&Ps allow the workforce to not only understand the accountabilities and responsibilities of their own position, but also that of their co-workers, which can foster a cooperative work environment.

How big should a company be to consider implementing Policies and Procedures?

With as few as six employees there will be recurring issues. Productivity and efficiencies both from a legal and operational standpoint can be gained through the implementation of P&Ps.

Farm Safety – National and Local Resources

The issue of health and safety on farms and agricultural businesses is one where many farmers and operatives often need to seek help.

This can apply to practical issues, local or national legislation, as well as immediate emergencies. Running a farm or related industry can be quite an isolated business, and it is important that whoever is running it is aware of the help that is available, and makes use of the wide resources available, both in real-time and online.

Safety Resources

It is important to identify firstly what help is needed, before deciding who to approach. This is likely to start with a risk analysis of the farm and its environment, and understanding of how the risks can be managed and which need to be insured, and what training may be needed for any or all operatives.

Safety training is a big issue on farms and related environments.

Historically most training was seen as being done on the job, but that has changed significantly in recent years, in large part due to the Internet.

Many local colleges and universities also offer degrees and programs in all types of farm management and safety, and they are often an ideal source for first contact

Universities and colleges often have specific dedicated units dealing with health and safety relating to agricultural matters, either that they teach as part of their course or which are required by local statute.

In addition to these, many colleges of health training for nurses and doctors are also an excellent resource as well as veterinary medicine colleges.

Universities and colleges can sometimes seem a bit remote, but in this area are genuinely keen to help where ever possible.

They are often able to advise on risk management, and the best type of training available. Many colleges also offer online training, and may even be able to devise specific programs for a particular branch of forming if required.

If they are unable to help with a specific requirement, they are likely to be able to recommend another resource or safety experts may be able to be more help.

Other sources of help

The other areas of help tend to fall into two categories of Public and Private.

The areas they may be able to help and will depend upon the specific need identified by the farm management, who can then either approach the relevant body or company to see if they can assist.

As a general guide, the public sources of help relate to areas such as traffic laws and road hazards, where the local police department is possibly the first place to call.

Alternatively local state legislature may be able to help get some reason the local police or fire department are unable.

In the event of any fatality that may occur in relation to farm or agricultural activity, the local county coroner will be involved and may be able to offer guidance in specific areas.

The other public sources of help generally relate to local or national government.

They will have specific departments relating to agriculture and health, as well as many others. These two departments in particular should have a wealth of experience and materials available specifically to help in these areas.

This can include training as well as all types of risk management tools that are available.

Many local governments also have specific teams dedicated to helping small businesses, as well as large ones. A lot of farm management practices could well find succour sources invaluable.

The sources of help available that are private tend to be companies or businesses who work in the agricultural industry.

They can be helpful either by way of providing advice or information, or by helping in the event of a problem emergency.

In terms of health and safety management and training, businesses who work in the electrical service industry, machinery and equipment dealers and private business safety consultants are often willing to provide details of programs and training regarding their services or the industry more generally.

Sales representatives of all products especially pesticides are often willing to provide safety information and training either as part of their sales program, or as an additional benefit in order to try and secure a sales lead.

It is always worth being aware of the fact that if an accident or emergency happens on a farm, it is highly likely that it will take a while for any emergency services to rise, given the remote nature of most farms and their distance from local communities.

It is highly important to recognise the need for on-site training regarding first aid and manual handling, including CPR. First aid training should be as extensive as possible to include items such as to how to deal with burns, electric shocks etc.

It is also important that the former management should have lists of all local emergency contacts with phone numbers, e-mail and websites readily available this should include all local doctors and nurses, emergency poison helplines, volunteer fire departments, and all types of emergency services such as ambulances etc.

A Vision Without a Plan is Just a Dream – 5 Steps to Realize Your Vision

You have done a lot of visioning work and inward searching to find your life’s true calling and purpose. You are excited about your newfound clarity. You are willing to move out of your comfort zone and take the necessary action to make it happen. But, you are unclear about what your next action should be or how to map out a plan. Perhaps you have not even thought about a plan of action and have bought into the idea that having a specific vision is all you need to manifest. I urge you to reconsider. Yes, having a clear, specific vision full of life is critical. However, a vision without a plan is just a dream. Here I outline a detailed action plan with five steps that will bring your vision to life.

1. Goal

This will look a lot like the vision you are working towards. It should be clear and very specific. Also, you should have a clear, realistic date for when you intend to achieve the goal.

2. Milestones

It is time to pull out a calendar. Work backwards from the date of your goal and realistically write down all of the specific milestones that occurred before the goal. If your vision is to build a website to market your business one milestone might be “Monday, December 5, 2008 – All of my web content is complete.”

3. Actions

Imagine for a moment that you are playing a game of ring toss. Do you think it is more likely that you will ring your target from 3 feet or from 20 feet? I hope your answer is 3 feet. You will be more successful when you break your actions into three-foot tosses. For instance, when an author writes a book they don’t usually start trying to build the whole book. While holding their vision of the finished book in mind they create an outline. Then they build one chapter at a time. Then they edit, etc. Give each action a specific date and time. For instance, an action might look like, “I will call xyz on Monday, December 12, 2008 at 9am to schedule our next meeting for Monday, December 19, 2008 at 2:30pm”

4. Team

It is time to make a list of the people on your team. Your team will consist of the specific people you will be working with and your support network. For instance, if you are building a website some people on your team might include your content editor and html programmer. However, don’t just name the position. Name the actual people. In addition, the support people on your team are people who will not necessarily be working directly on the project, but people with whom you trust sharing your vision. Sharing your vision with people you trust helps put it into existence. In addition, I invite you to set up an accountability system with one of the people on your team. Among your support might be co-workers not working directly on this goal, your life partner, and your best friend. Get their permission for you to place them on your team. By doing this you are engaging their support. I also suggest specifically asking them to hold this vision with you and to occasionally ask you how you are doing achieving the goal.

5. Resources

Your resources will consist of everything you need to execute your plan. These include people, places, and things. People who may not be on your team but may be resources are experts in your field who have written articles or books you may refer to for information. If you are coordinating a seminar you will need a place to hold it. If you are coordinating a seminar things you might need are poster board and an easel.

I do caution against rigidity. Keep your agreements with yourself and others and negotiate accordingly if you need to change them. This will allow for flexibility within this structure. When you follow this plan while holding a clear vision, it will support you in moving out of your comfort zone, and taking all the necessary action you have outlined. This is what it takes to achieve your goals!

Autism Treatment – Using Probiotics in Autism Treatment

I want to discuss the different types of probiotics and what are considered general probiotics and those that are considered treatment specific probiotics. The options on the market for probiotics are many and varied. Three major examples of all around, multi-floral probiotic products are Probiotic Support Formula from New Beginnings, Therbiotic Complete from Klaire Labs and Multi-Flora Spectrum from Kirkman labs. There are certainly other forms but these are three very good, multi-floral probiotics that have a number of good bacteria in them. And a good way to understand the benefits of these probiotics is to view them as a multi-vitamin for the overall health of your digestive tract. Probiotic Support Formula, Therbiotic Complete and Multi-Flora Spectrum are all very helpful for the overall health of the digestive system.

Next we can discuss what I call the treatment specific probiotic options. Treatment specific probiotics are used to treat a specific disorder or issue within the body. Culturelle is one example of this. What Culturelle is, is a specific type of probiotic called acidophilus GG and it can be very effective at targeting and going after clostridia bacteria. Quite a few people use Three Lac as a treatment for yeast since it is particularly helpful for that. So of course, you wouldn’t use Three Lac long term as an all around, immune and digestive support aid. You would use Three Lac with the intent to help control yeast overgrowth. VSL #3 is another example of a treatment specific probiotic. It is a very potent probiotic that has been used successfully to break down oxalates. And while it does have some effectiveness against clostridia as well, for the most part it is used to help combat high oxalate levels. A fourth treatment specific probiotic is called Saccharomyces Boulardii which is a type of yeast that will attack another form of yeast called candida. So Saccharomyces Boulardii is used specifically as part of an anti-fungal approach because of this tendency to help control candida. It can also be very effective when used while you are taking antibiotics, it can prevent a yeast overgrowth from starting. Saccharomyces Boulardii also does have some effectiveness at fighting clostridia as well.

So as you can see, there are many probiotics out there and this was to serve as just a highlight. As a recap there are multi-floral probiotics which serve to enhance the immune system and to enhance the digestive system and then there are probiotics that are treatment specific that I outlined above.

  • What is the reasonable timeline to build a website?

If you get a suitable answer to all these questions then go ahead with your web development project with that particular agency.

Effective Strategies in SEO

If you own a website, webpage or a blog and want people to access it easily or become aware of it by just one search in Google or Yahoo then you need to know the effective strategies of Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

Search Engine Optimization is thus an important part of internet marketing. It is the process through which a website becomes more easily visible in the search engine. When the site appears on top of the list of search results then more people will visit the site and this will add to the popularity of a particular site. Hence it is very important that you keep effective tips and strategies in mind to attract visitors to your web page.

Some points to keep in mind regarding SEO strategies and tips.

  • Specific naming- They say,”What’s in a name ” but you know how everything depends on a name when you are actually setting up a website that you have to ensure matches with specific searching terms.
