Are You A Social Chameleon? (Read This To Find Out!)

To truly understand the concept of Emotional Intelligence (of which being a “Social Chameleon” is a dimension), I urge you to read the book by Daniel Goleman titled “Emotional Intelligence”.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a SOCIAL skill, and it has a number of key dimensions that can be used to assess any person in a bid to gauge his or her proficiency or competence with respect to that ability. No one is “born” with a fixed EI. You can develop your EI by learning.

One important dimension of EI is “Interpersonal Effectiveness: The Ability to Get Along With Others – Including People You Do Not Like”.

Now, this is why EI is a skill that has to be learned. Not everyone can manage to see this through (i.e. getting along with others) successfully. Yet, learning how to do so, could determine how successful one will be in life – especially if one chooses to function in a social environment that places high premium on that dimension of EI.

Getting along with others requires one to make positive/good impressions on people they interact with. It requires being able to quickly determine what those they relate with “like” or are “interested” in, so as to skillfully/subtly align themselves in a way that makes such persons “think or feel” you share similar likes or interests.

Those who are able to master this skill of “Effective Impressions Management”, quite often achieve their goal of having successful relationships with many different kinds of people, in different social environments. And in many cases, this ability helps them succeed in professions/vocations such as – acting, trial law, sales, diplomacy, and politics – where one may find him/herself having to relate with person(s) s/he dislikes.

They consequently become “Social Chameleons” – persons able to change or adapt themselves more or less at will to suit the social environment they find themselves in.

And that leads me to the point of this article’s title. When someone with this ability takes it to the negative extreme, where s/he begins to apply it without “integrity”. That is, when s/he does it without being true to his/her inner values. I mean, when s/he becomes DUPLICITOUS – deliberately showing one face to the world, while hiding his/her true self on the inside, with a view to DECEIVING and MANIPULATING others for ulterior benefits. At this point s/he would have become an ANCHORLESS Social Chameleon!

In case you still have not gotten it, the ANCHORLESS Social Chameleon is the person who uses his/her interpersonal skill/”social polish” in a DISHONEST way, so as to exploit those s/he relates with. Another word for it, as earlier mentioned is DUPLICITY – the quality of being TWO-FACED (Not Idibia O!), or “speaking from both sides of the mouth”. You NEVER know what people like this really believe or stand for – especially on ethical or moral issues.

In society, they are the people who jump from one political party platform to another at the slightest hint that better fortunes can be had from doing so. Today, they are speaking in support of one cause, and tomorrow against it. It’s often about them and how what they do ultimately benefits them. They use their skills to assess which of two or more opposing groups has the greatest chance of winning, and skillfully play themselves up to where they’ll benefit the most.

When people like this exist in large numbers in any society, quite often REAL development, or positive changes that can benefit the larger majority, take longer to happen. This is because in such places, selflessness tends to be a quality that is abhorred. The few who are willing to act selflessly in that manner will frequently find themselves getting used by such anchorless social chameleons, to get ahead – leading to the former’s frustration!

Any social group or organisation that wishes to develop and progress (be it a company, family, association, or nation) needs to ensure that its members are “coached” as early as possible in life to (as Daniel Goleman put it) “use their social polish more in keeping with their true feelings…” so that they can act in accordance with their “deepest feelings and values no matter what the social consequences”.

Summary

Everyone has the ability to LEARN or DEVELOP his/her EI. So long as a child is given early coaching towards identifying and developing the various dimensions of EI, she will over time grow into a socially competent adult – one able to engage in reasonably balanced – and successful – interactions with others.

What I have however found important to focus on, with respect to this important “meta” ability, is that having EI should not be used by ANYONE as an excuse to be “insincere or duplicitous”, in order to be “popular”.

In a couple of instances, I have had certain individuals express the opinion that another person was not acting with EI, because that person refused to compromise on certain fronts with them. Or maybe s/he was unwilling to grant them certain concessions they requested. Does that really mean a person is NOT Emotionally Intelligent? Are we to believe that Emotionally Intelligent people are those who do NOT say NO to other people’s requests?

My answer, which I know is the right answer to the above questions is NO. Being Emotionally Intelligent does NOT mean you will no longer be able to say NO to people who ask you to do something you do NOT want to do – especially if you are CONVINCED you have a good reason not to.

Indeed, I would say that the onus falls on the other person to ASK you why you are saying NO – especially if you had not done so in the past. Assuming that you, as the person asking a favour, are the only one with valid needs that require priority attention is a MASSIVE lapse of Emotional Intelligence. Why is this so? Get Goleman’s book, and read it to find out.

FINAL WORDS: So, now that you’ve read this, let’s go back to my question-format title: Are You a Social Chameleon?

If your answer is YES, I congratulate you on having that level of self-mastery that is sure to open doors for you, in your relationships with others.

HOWEVER, and this is IMPORTANT, it is crucial that you stay alert to the need to avoid crossing over to the extreme negative end of this ability scale, where you begin to function without EMOTIONAL INTEGRITY. Fail to do this, and you will become the ANCHORLESS Social Chameleon described above – which could cause you major embarrassment if another person (possibly a “Social Chameleon” with integrity) – decides to take you up!

NB: You can Google “Emotional Intelligence” and “Social Chameleon” to learn more.

Social Network Benefits

Social Networking of course is in its infancy, at least to web site traffic generators, so what are the so far under-penetrated benefits of social networking?

Lower Costs

It is significantly cheaper to employ online social networking strategies than to pay for advertising. When you social network, you can prescreen potential customers. You learn what your prospects like and what they don’t. That personal relationship you gain when you connect with your potential customer is more valuable than what you would get had you advertised. Advertising is impersonal: the “one size fits all” concept does not seem to work anymore.

Credibility and Trust

Connecting with prospects on a personal level builds trust and credibility. A general rule of thumb is to offer your services, expertise or help before you ask for it. It is acceptable to promote your services when asked. If you’re not careful, your attempts could be considered spam. Instead, wait for the opportunities to present themselves instead of forcing a situation.

It’s Who You Know

When you socialize, you meet others who know others. How are you going to meet the president of a large corporation? You start by talking to his friends. You ask your associates if they know someone who is connected with him And on and on.

Social networking relationships are supposed to benefit both parties. Never take more than you give. When the opportunity presents itself, don’t be afraid to ask your contact to introduce you to a prospect. The old saying rings true: it’s not what you know; it’s who you know.

There are many reasons to employ social networking as a marketing tactic. Ensure that you have extra time to spend. While it’s true that the upfront costs are less, this method takes up a lot of time in research and building relationships.

What Are the Social Contradictions?

The social/economic contradictions are different from all others in nature that they apply to humans, and so they describe qualities specific to social /interest groups/social classes, and the resolution would be inside human social structures. For any unknown social/economic contradiction the spontaneous antagonistic resolution would be with loss of value and resources.

If the contradictions are known, the resolution may be accomplished before the reaching the antagonistic stages. So it can be stated that the efficient leaders of society should know and resolve the contradictions as they get available solutions, avoiding antagonistic stages or social conflicts.

The study of contradictions in Socialism or in any society has importance beyond the theoretical aspect. The very practical/pragmatic aspect would be the optimization of social relations between classes/group of interest and the correct allocation of resources into society as a whole.

The media manipulation is what the governments do at time to postpone the antagonistic stage until the underlining facts help for a peaceful resolution.

The antagonist stage of contradictions

“In each thing there is contradiction between its new and its old aspects, and this gives rise to a series of struggles with many twists and turns. As a result of these struggles, the new aspect changes from being minor to being major and rises to predominance, while the old aspect changes from being major to being minor and gradually dies out. And the moment the new aspect gains dominance over the old, the old thing changes qualitatively into a new thing. It can thus be seen that the nature of a thing is mainly determined by the principal aspect of the contradiction, the aspect which has gained predominance. When the principal aspect which has gained predominance changes, the nature of a thing changes accordingly.”(Mao)

In December 1989 the contradiction between Ceausescu’ rhetoric and Romanian population starvation become antagonistic and it was solved by popular uprising.

Why Social Media Marketing Is Important to Your Business

SMM, the new tool in the business arena has shown a promising rise, the recent years. The web world is going gaga over it & Social media has shown a 100% higher lead-to-close rate than outbound marketing. Today nearly 84% of B2B marketers use social media in some form or the other. No matter what you sell and who your target audience is,, using social media as a marketing tool is a sure shot way to you grow your brand!

Not having an active social media presence is kind of like living in the ancient times. People may ask what is social media marketing going to do for me? Do I really need it? Yes. Yes you do just check out the reasons why:

Increased Web Traffic

Social media posts can drive targeted traffic. Creating a new page on your site, landing pages, well-placed social media posts can make all the difference. A single link on Reddit or links submitted to StumbleUpon can transform a page from a handful of visitors a day to hundreds. Who wouldn’t want to capitalize on that?

Boost SEO

Social media can boost your site’s SEO. Search engine crawlers know which pages are consistently earning traffic and which are just floating out there, forgotten and ignored. Driving traffic to your optimized pages with social media posts will cause them to climb much faster in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Connect with Consumers & Industry Leaders

Social media leads to real relationship building. Twitter and Instagram marketing can get you free interaction with your customer base – you can read their tweets and status updates to get insights into their daily lives like what products they prefer and why etc. & maybe you can fine tune your strategy.

You can also use social media as a tool to connect with thought leaders and tastemakers in your space, as well as journalists who cover your industry.

Get your message across

As people view Twitter and Facebook as social networks, not marketing machines they’re less likely to see what you post as marketing and will be more likely to hear what you have to say. This translates to serious web traffic when you link to your site and posts that market themselves as your friends and followers share what you’ve posted.

Targeting and retargeting with Ads.

The highly customizable nature of social media ads. like Facebook ads, is one of the reasons social media is important. These ads even allow you to target users by things like location, education level, industry and even purchase history and the pages they’ve liked. You also have to the option to retarget the users who visit you & even convert them into solid leads and sales.

Get noticed at events

It’s easier to get noticed at events and even generate earned media coverage with social media posts. At any event there’s no better way to leverage your presence than with the help of social media.

Immediate response

The feedback you get in the process of SMM, you’ll be the first to know when there are issues – and you can take immediate steps to resolve them right away and consumers appreciate companies that respond to customer complaints.

Builds Brand Loyalty

Brand loyalty can be built on a strong social media presence. It has been found that brands with active social media profiles have more loyal customers. Being active on social media helps you become less like a business and more like what you truly are – a unified group of people who share a vision.

Social Anxiety and the Four Temperaments

My eyes were opened ever since I learnt about the “four temperaments”. The impact it had upon me and my social anxiety was very noticeable.

People with SA are often concerned, even terrified, of what other people think of them and are quite sensitive to the responses and actions of others. However, upon learning about the four temperaments, we get a better insight as to what is really going on in the other person’s head.

So, what are the “four temperaments”, you ask? It is a theory of psychology which originated from the “four humours” concept of 460-370 BC. Basically, there are four personality categories: Sanguine, Melancholy, Choleric, and Phlegmatic. While you will most likely find you have traits from all four, most people will have significantly more in one or two of the categories.

Here is a summary of the four categories, and how understanding this may help you realise that what you interpret is not really what the other person may be thinking:

Sanguine

The Sanguine is the extrovert, the talker, the optimist. They are the life of the party, the centre of attention, and love to talk. They are also known on occasion to be forgetful and disorganised.

Someone with social anxiety may find this outgoing and carefree personality type intimidating. Sanguine personalities can tend to say things without thinking them through first. Usually, what they say was not intended to be hurtful, and some individuals may not understand how someone could possibly have social anxiety. They can also make fun of things that other people find embarrassing (but Sanguines really don’t see it that way). If they do blurt out something offensive, take it with a grain of salt as they probably did not really mean it in the way you have interpreted.

On the other hand, Sanguines are the best kind of people to have conversations with if you are really not much of a talker. They will appreciate a good listener, and you will appreciate not having to say much.

Melancholy

The Melancholy is the introvert, the thinker, the pessimist. They are analytical, perfectionists, and generally serious people. They can also take things too personally and be over sensitive.

The Melancholy personality will often respond to things negatively. If they shoot down something you say, it may not be as personal as you think. They can often see the worst in things and might not even realise that they have offended you (being in this category myself, I can certainly vouch for that). Sometimes this personality can get very precise and irritated when it comes to neatness and perfection. If this happens, just smile knowingly when you realise this is very typical behaviour of the Melancholy.

On the other hand, those with Melancholic traits are also passionate, caring, and loving. They are quite open minded, and many are willing to empathise or discuss deep topics.

Choleric

The Choleric is the extrovert, the doer, the optimist. They are born leaders, strong willed, and move quickly to action. They may also put pressure on others and appear bossy at times.

Cholerics can sometimes be the scariest people out there if you have social anxiety. They will speak harshly, push their views, and tell you what to do. However, please recognise that more often than not, a Choleric is not trying to offend you. It is just the way they are, and they are unlikely to know that they have offended you and have already moved on and forgotten about it while you dwell on it for weeks on end.

The Choleric/Sanguine can often be the type to put others down or make fun of them, all the while smiling and making a joke out of it all. Smile and go along with it because they are not trying to hurt you and their words are likely much harsher than what they are actually thinking. Certain individuals of this personality type also believe that they are the best, and work hard to stay there.

If a Choleric compliments you at all, you know you really must have done something right. Feel proud about a Choleric acknowledging what good you have done, because they really mean it.

Phlegmatic

The Phlegmatic is the introvert, the watcher, the pessimist. They are easy going, generally quiet, and prefer to avoid conflicts. However, they can at times be difficult to communicate with and are very indecisive.

The Phlegmatic is probably the last person that you will have conflicts with, but if you have social anxiety, even these types can seem intimidating. Phlegmatics tend to hide their emotions and prefer to listen rather than talk, so be careful not to misinterpret this as meaning that they don’t want to be around you.

They are very forgiving people and are pleasant to hang around with. I have always felt a lot more comfort talking to an easy going Phlegmatic (unfortunately, I am also a Phlegmatic, therefore we can never decide on anything!).

SixDegrees – Social Networking In Its Infancy

When most of us think about online social networks, we most probably think about Facebook. Facebook is by far the most popular social networking site we have today with 500 million Facebook users.

However, Mark Zuckerberg was definitely not the first person to ever have built a social network – he was just the first to succeed in the way that he did.

In truth, one of the first social networks to really take off, was named Sixdegrees.com.

It was founded by Andrew Weinreich, a well known entrepreneur & internet executive. Weinreich started his career working as a financial analyst and after a short while, went back to school to study law. He worked as a legal professional for 2 years. It was during this time that he devised the concept of an online social network which made the process of “meeting people you don’t know through the people you do know” more efficient.

It was in 1997 that he launched Sixdegrees. At it’s peak, the site had 3,500,000 users and 100 employees. Weinreich later sold the site to Youthstream Media Networks in December 2000 for US$125 million. Weinreich is currently the CEO of meetMoi – a location based mobile dating service, as well as the chairman of Xtify, a platform for geo-targeted mobile messaging.

Sixdegrees was based on the web of contacts type of social networking. Weinreich drew his inspiration from the theory that every person in the world is connected to every other person by not more than six steps, otherwise known as the the concept of “six degrees of separation”. It was also the first social networking site to combine features found on other dating sites & community sites into one. Users could create personal profiles, set up friend lists and surf friend lists belonging to other users within their network. They could send each other messages, affiliate themselves with networks as well as send their family & friends invitations to become members of Sixdegrees.

Writing this now in 2010, none of this seems that impressive. However, back in 1997, no other site offered a combination of these features.

Unfortunately, Sixdegrees did not last very long, and it certainly didn’t leverage the popularity or support that a site such as Facebook has today. There were a number of reasons that contributed to the failure of this social network:

1) At the time, web technology was not yet developed to the point where it was able to support the features that were needed to make this kind of application successful;

2) Despite their 3,500,000 registered users, Sixdegrees couldn’t accumulate the amount of users needed before their money ran out;

3) The features available to Sixdegrees users were not as engaging as they could have been & failed to keep their users coming back;

4) Factors which were outside of the company’s control had a detrimental effect on it’s ability to make a profit from online advertising. These events included a post-April 2000 recession, as well as 9/11, and;

5) The online advertising industry was not mature enough to provide enough online advertisers to support their business model.

Factors 4 & 5 probably contributed the most to their downfall, however, Sixdegrees marked the beginning of a new era in online communication & networking. Despite it’s short-lived success, it paved the way for the likes of Facebook, LinkedIn and many more.

Social Networking Vs Face-To-Face Contact

Websites such as Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn has caused an important shift in the communications culture. These sites have become places where people can meet friends, potential partners, and even employers. Now, people join Facebook groups where they get updates online instead of joining local community organizations that meet weekly. However, some say that communications these days are fast losing its personal touch because of these sites. They say that social networking sites, though useful, can never substitute for the sincerity and the social experience of getting out there, meeting people, and interacting face to face.

Face-to-Face Contact

Many believers of face-to-face contact use psychology as their main source of argument. According to them, face-to-face contact has many key benefits, such as enhancing people’s lives both socially and psychologically. Having face-to-face connections can make an individual healthier. It also promotes behaviors that are beneficial for the growth of the entire society.

Some people believe that the lack of involvement and communities is encouraging a population that is not socially oriented. Instead of making people socially oriented, social networking is producing self-reliant individuals who do not realize the importance of close communities.

However, truth be told, face-to-face communications are difficult to maintain.

Social Networking

Undeniably enough, this allows people to form strong, intimate communities that are not hindered by many factors that affect most face-to-face relationships. First, online communities do not have geographical boundaries.

Second, some people find it easier to communicate in a more detached, less personal way. Face-to-face contact adds certain ingredients to the mix, ingredients that do not invite open, sincere communication. Some of these ingredients are competitiveness, insecurity over one’s appearance, pride, fear of being embarrassed, fear of saying the wrong things, and so on. Through this, people can forget about appearances and just communicate, and communicating over the Internet gives them time to think about what they are going to say. Although still personal, online communications provide just enough anonymity so that people can express themselves more freely, without worrying about what they wear and how they look. Furthermore, perhaps the biggest advantage of social networking, in fact, is how it has given voice even to introverts.

Similar to the effects of mobile phones, the effects of this type of networking have, in the end, led to people who are more connected with one another, not because they see each other daily or regularly, but because they can talk to one another anytime they want to through the Internet. And even if friends become separated by geographical distance, social networking makes sure the connection stays intact.

The benefits of social networking in how people communicate, connect, and interact are undeniable, and even as critics continue to argue against it, the move towards online communications is not showing any signs of stopping.

Leadership Lessons From The Social Network: Teamwork

The movie, The Social Network, is a powerful portrayal of how the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and his team, started out with a dream and a $1000 start-up, to become the youngest billionaire in the world. At the point of writing, Facebook is valued to be worth at least $50 billion, and this would mean that she is worth more than eBay, Yahoo, and Time Warner. This is a very impressive result given the fact that Facebook was launched in February 2004.

There are also plenty of lessons that this movie can teach us about leadership and team management, and this is the final series of the trilogy. There may be certain information in the movie that had been exaggerated to increase the excitement level, as even Zuckerberg himself, calls The Social Network “inaccurate”. Hence I would take all these information with a pinch of salt and relate most of the lessons learned, from the movie itself, and not from real life.

In this article, I will share about teamwork and how it can help you unlock the true potential as a leader.

Proper Delegation of Work. The whole team can only do well when you know what their job scopes are. In one of the scenes in the Social Network, Mark Zuckerberg wanted to expand The Face Book, and he directed his team on their roles, and what they were supposed to do. And when the two ladies who were present in the living room, asked if they could help in any way, he declined them without much thought because at that moment, he knew that he didn’t require their help in any way. On the other hand, he specifically told the others what their tasks were.

Even the Winklevoss brothers had specific roles for their team. And they knew that they were deficient in a particular talent when their programmer left the team to concentrate on his studies. Hence when news broke out that Zuckerberg was able to shut down the Harvard traffic with his “prank”, they immediately reached out to him and shared with him their ideas so that he could work for them.

Once you know what your team is supposed to be made up of, you would be able to find the right person for the job. You need to set stretched and measurable goals for them and you also need to be informed of the progress. Effective delegation is not merely pushing away the jobs that were meant for you. Effective delegation is to ensure that the person with the right skill does what he or she knows best.

For example, let’s presume that you intend to increase your customer base with a promotional blitz. Firstly, you need to know who your team members are in this project. Secondly, you then need to identify who does what, and their deliverables by a certain time. Thereafter, Jane must come up with the product packages and links with other partners, and John must reach out to X advertising companies with the marketing materials. Hence once the planning stage is over, the real action must start so that the project starts to roll with momentum from all parties.

Build Quality Relationships First, then Your Business. Now, not every partner will work together initially. It’s your job to iron out the differences. And fast. In The Social Network, Eduardo Saverin had his own ideas in ensuring success of the company. However, Mark Zuckerberg had his own ideas too. And while, Saverin was Chief Financial Officer in the business, Zuckerberg proceeded to pull Sean Parker, founder of Napster into the team. Parker and Saverin were portrayed to have mutual dislike for each other and when your teammates distrust each other, unless you find time to sort things out, many issues will simply be swept under the carpet and it will fester.

As a leader, you need to take the time to understand your partners in the business because people want you to understand their aspirations and dreams. They want you to understand what they are good in, and where they can fit in with regard to projects. Why would you want to place a person with zero knowledge in sales without first training him? And have you spent the time to understand if he even likes sales? So by investing time to understand your core team members in the business, you would be building quality relationships.

Hence understand your team, and they will learn to understand you. It will definitely take time and that’s the fun and rewarding part in building a team.
