Baby Stroller Buying Guide

Baby Stroller Types

Other than the family car, the first vehicle that your child will spend any time in is his or her baby stroller. This makes your baby’s stroller a very important item and as time passes and your child grows, you may find that you need more than just one.

Safety and your baby’s comfort are the two most important things to consider when choosing a baby stroller. However, you need to keep yourself in mind also. After all, you are the one who will be lifting, carrying and pushing the stroller. So, look for the type of stroller that will make your life easier.

Standard Strollers

This type of baby stroller is available in different styles, colors and designs. They usually have padded seats for comfort that also recline. Most of these strollers come with under seat storage and many have a sun shade. Seating can vary from forward facing to rear facing, and some can have the option to do both. Prices for these type strollers can range from a very affordable $50.00 all the way up to over $1000.00 for high-end models with plenty of features.

Car Seat Strollers

Somewhat similar to the Standard Strollers, these models consist of a lightweight “bare bones” frame that allow you to attach a car seat. Simply remove your car seat (with the baby in it) from the base inside your car and just snap it onto the stroller frame. This is a good option for parents that know they will be taking their baby in or out the car often. They fold up easily and need very little space, but are only practical for infants up to six months or a year. After that your baby will be too big to use one these strollers safely.

Baby Stroller Combos

Travel System Strollers

These are package deals that usually consist of a heavier and larger standard stroller and matching car seat and base. They cost more than a car seat carrier, but the quality is better and they can be used for a longer time. This is possible because you do not need to attach the car seat into the stroller.

Combination Strollers

Very similar to travel system strollers, these stroller packages resemble “bassinets with wheels”. Similar in style to the classic English pram, the bassinet feature allows you to have your baby lay flat. There are many variations with combo strollers. Some come with removable seats to accommodate the bassinet feature and some can also accept a car seat. Quite often though, you need to purchase the car seat, base and/or adapter separately. Although it can be used longer and in more ways, a combination set up is more costly

Lightweight Baby Stroller

More suited for older babies and toddlers because of the lack of head support and the ability to recline fully, the lightweight umbrella stroller is a no-frills simple stroller. They weigh between 10 and 12 lbs., fold easily and take up very little space folded. They are less expensive than other models and often used as a back up baby stroller for traveling.

The Classic Baby Stroller

This type of baby stroller is reminiscent of the traditional English pram. They offer a flat and ample sleeping surface for your baby. The classic styled baby carriage or pram often have large spoke wheels with inflatable tires that can actually be removed for servicing, These carriages are well suited for all babies from birth to three years old.

Quite elegant, the English pram style baby stroller is usually very expensive with top quality features. Although you can find some lower priced versions under $100.00, expect to pay between $300.00 up to $1800.00 for a high end baby stroller.

Benefits of a Car Organizer

It seems like more and more, people are practically living in their cars. Between long commutes, rides to and from soccer and running errands, people spend a good portion of their waking hours in the car. This means that more and more of their stuff also ends up in their cars. This can lead to a very messy car because there just isn’t a place to put everything. This is where a car organizer can come in handy.

There are car organizers for trunks, back seats, and front seats. A cargo organizer separates a trunk into smaller compartments, which can keep items more secure. It also prevents the groceries from rolling around with the soccer equipment. Many cargo organizers can also be easily lifted in and out of the car, which can make unloading things at the end of the day much easier.

A car seat organizer that fits over the front car seats and has pockets and pouches accessible from the back seat are ideal for people with small children riding in the back of the car. This can be used to store small toys, books, or other things to keep kids entertained during a car ride. Many of these over the seat organizers also have a spot for a small trash bag. This way garbage is collected into one spot and makes cleaning out the car simpler.

There are also front seat organizers that act like mini-filing cabinets or desks for a businessperson who does a lot of traveling in their car. There are spots for files, pens, pencils and other office supplies. Some are also available with a flat surface for writing. This is ideal for someone like a realtor who needs to do a lot of paperwork in their car between showings or other appointments. Using an organizer like this makes removing everything very quick when the car is going to be used for more than one person.

A car organizer can be very useful for busy people. Check them out online or in local retailers to find one that fits your needs the best.

How to Prevent Saddle Sore: Tips for Heavy Riders

There are several reasons why cycling can be a good exercise for heavy people. Cycling is not only a fun outdoor activity but it is a low impact exercise that cyclists can do at their own pace without straining their joints. However, like all cyclists, heavy riders can be at risk of suffering from saddle sore.

Saddle sore is a skin disorder usually found in the area of the body such as the inner thighs and the perineal region that are in contact with the bicycle seat. It can be quite uncomfortable and even painful. This has been a common problem among cyclists regardless of weight. However, those who go for long rides and those who are a bit on the heavy side are more prone to experiencing saddle sore. To avoid it, experienced riders share these tips.

Seat height is one factor to consider. When buying your bike, try giving it a test ride to see whether the seat is set properly. A seat that is too high will pull your body further into the saddle as you reach for the pedal. This causes excessive pressure that may lead to saddle sore. A seat that is too low on the other hand, does not allow your legs to support your body and may put too much pressure on your crotch which also increases the risk of having saddle sore.

You can have the seat height adjusted just at the right height where you can actually sit upright and place both feet on the ground for balance. The right seat height can lessen the pressure on your sit bones and crotch area reducing the chances of chaffing.

The width of the saddle can also contribute to experiencing soreness. If the saddle is too wide, you might experience increased pressure in the crotch region which causes chaffing that leads to saddle sore.

While it is essential to wear a good pair of padded cycling shorts, experienced riders warn about wearing thick shorts. These tend to bunch up along the sides of the saddle and hold in sweat. The longer you are in these shorts and with the sweat accumulating in your crotch area, the higher the risk of skin irritation that leads to soreness. It may also cause bacteria build up that leads to infection in the chaffed area. It is recommended that you wear a chamois that does not have a seam in the middle of the shorts to prevent unwanted rubbing. Some riders suggest applying chamois cream but you might want to consult your doctor which would be good for you especially if you have sensitive skin.

If you can manage to stand on the pedals for brief 10 seconds to relieve pressure on your seat, try doing so. This can also help allow blood to circulate along your seat area.

Remember that saddle soreness is common among cycling enthusiasts regardless of weight and length of cycling experience. But it is something that can be prevented so you can enjoy your cycling to fitness and health.

Church Chairs – Understanding Ergonomics

When simple wooden pews were the standard seating in most churches, comfort was not a high priority. However, as we have learned more about ergonomics and how poor seating can actually lead to discomfort, churches have begun to invest in seating that will provide quality support and comfort to their parishioners. With this new focus on comfort, it is important to be aware of some of the ergonomic features which can affect a chair’s comfort.

Lumbar Support

The human spine is not really a straight line, but curved. The lower part of the spine is known as the lumbar region, and tends to curve outward slightly. Many chairs are designed with a flat backrest, which causes the lumbar to flatten while seated. When purchasing new seating for your church, look for chairs with a slightly contoured backrest and lumbar support. This will help your congregation focus on the service rather than on their aching backs!

Waterfall Seat

Another important factor in comfort is the shape of the seat itself. If the seat remains flat at the very front edge, or curves down only slightly, the edge can put pressure on the back of the knees. A waterfall seat has a thick, rounded edge extending beyond the frame, reducing pressure and improving circulation in the legs.

Foam Density

One of the most obvious contributing factors toward the overall comfort of a chair is its cushion. When sampling church chairs, look for a dual-density foam cushion that is both soft and dense. Inquire about the exact density of the foam padding. A higher number indicates a denser cushion, which will provide a higher level of support and comfort for a longer period of time. Many church chair manufacturers will have the density measurements on their websites. If not, be sure to inquire for this information.

A familiarity with ergonomic terms and measurements are helpful for narrowing down your seating choices, but don’t forget the most important test – actually sitting in the chairs. Ask for samples of church chairs and have several members of your congregation sit in them for at least fifteen minutes at a time and give their opinion. After all, these are the people who will be sitting in these new chairs for years to come.

Well Done, Senor!

The city bus was not overcrowded, but most of the seats were occupied. So I had to take a seat meant for senior citizens on the front left side of the bus. An elderly lady was occupying the window seat alongside me. To add to my peace of mind two seats meant for the senior citizens and differently abled persons were still empty. So there was no immediate danger of losing the seat.

After the first stop one senior citizen boarded the bus, and to my surprise instead of taking the empty seat ahead came straight to me mumbling something. I pointed to the seat on the front rows indicating that he might as well occupy it. The elderly gentleman did not budge and muttered something again. I thought I heard the word ‘madam’ and so surmised that the lady on the window seat was known to him and that he wanted to give her company for the ride. Without much of a protesting mind I obliged him, and to my luck one of the seats on the last rows just got empty. Instinctively I kept on watching the senior citizen as I sat down on my new address. More surprise was in store.

Instead of sitting down he again mumbled something to the elderly lady, and the lady got up too. I was really confused now. What was he up to? The elderly woman moved somewhat stiffly towards the seats on the right side of the bus meant for ladies only. I immediately turned my focus to those seats, and found that one seat there was empty. As the senior citizen finally sat down satiated on the window seat everything, suddenly, was revealed to me. I laughed out inside me and I was not able to prevent the amusement infecting my facial contours.

It was a compact plan. While he was boarding the senior citizen took in the scenario inside completely and accordingly made his calculated moves. He disposed of me first which was not at all against the law, and then he eliminated the lady too which was also quite logical. His target was plain and simple-to have a comfortable ride occupying the window seat. Let it be on trains or planes or cars or buses the craze for the window seats goes on unabated. From childhood days we always fight for that and when we win we get overjoyed. No harm done, basically!

Well done, Senor! Keep it up!

Why Do Some Toilet Seats Have Gaps in the Front?

Toilets are an essential part of virtually every single person’s life here in the United States. Without toilets, we would be forced to revert back to a time of ancient plumbing, or worse, diapers! Since toilets are so engrossed in the luxury of modern living, we hardly ever think about them until they need to be cleaned or repaired.

However, there is one universal toilet question that thousands of people want to know. And it has to do with that mysterious gap in the front of the seat. You’ve seen them before if you’ve ever used a public restroom: the U-shaped toilet seat. Continue reading to learn some silly facts about these kinds of toilet seats, and finally end the urgency to solve this trivial mystery!

U-Shaped Toilet Seats

As you have probably already figured out at this point, U-shaped toilet seats are mostly seen in public restrooms. If you look in your own private bathroom at home, you will notice that your seat is a full oval. So what’s the difference? Well, let’s take a look at what the 1955 American Standard National Plumbing Code (ASNPC) has to say about it:

“Water closets shall be equipped with seats of smooth non-absorbent material. All seats of water closets provided for public use shall be of the open-front type.”

Furthermore, a global industry guideline called the Uniform Plumbing Code, which was created by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPM), outdated the American Standard National Plumbing Code in 1973, and has since imposed open-front toilet seats for public restrooms.

Plumbing Codes

These plumbing codes are not necessarily enforced by law, but they are industry-accepted standards adopted by many municipalities. These municipalities often write the UPC into their own local codes. So is the answer to the question plumbing codes? Well, a little. The real answer lies in the reason why they are part of public plumbing code.

You see, U-shaped toilet seats were originally designed with the Ladies in mind. The gap in the front of the seat made procedure and cleanup easier for women. This design gave ladies more access and allowed them to use the toilet without risk of touching the porcelain. It is important to understand that these are the most popular and accepted theories to this toilet seat riddle. There are several other theories as well. So now it is up to you to make your own!

Where to Mount Your Car Amps

There are several places in your car to install your car amps. You can usually be mounted with just 4 screws. The screws you use will depend on what you are screwing into, wood, metal, etc. You do want to mount your car amp at least 3 feet away from your receiver though to eliminate the chance of receiving any interference in your receiver. Making sure your stereo equipment is securely mounted can help eliminate shorts and other problems with your stereo.

So where do you want to install your car amps?

1) Under the front seat

Mounting an amplifier under the front seat can be a safe and secure for your car amplifier. Another advantage of installing your amp under the front seat is that you can run much shorter patch cables to your amp. It is also nice because it will be out of the way.

An obvious disadvantage of mounting a car amplifier under a seat is that you will have to remove the seat to install the amp. Sometimes removing the seat can deactivate the air bag SRS system in your car. As with any time you work on a cars electrical system you will want to make sure to connect the cars negative battery terminal. Another disadvantage of mounting your car amps under the front seat is that only smaller amps will fit under the seat.

2) In the trunk or hatch of your car

A common place to install your car amps is in the trunk or hatch. The advantage of mounting amplifiers in the trunk is you have much more space in the trunk for larger amps. It is also closer to your sub and rear speakers. The trunk is also can be a good place to conceal your amps so you can keep them safe from unwanted eyes.

The disadvantage of installing your amp in the trunk is that you have to run longer RCA cables and usually longer power wires. Having longer power wires usually means you need a thicker wire. Be sure to research to make sure you use the right size cable for your amps. Another disadvantage of mounting your amp is that it can get in the way when it is mounted in the trunk.

One thing you want to keep in mind is that car amps can produce lots of heat. This is one thing you will want to consider when choosing where to mount your amp. The amps cooling fins will need some space to disperse the heat. Giving the amps a couple of inches is enough space to help keep your amp cool. Never mount your amp upside down. This will make the heat radiate back up into the amplifier making it very hot. Make sure you also leave adequate room for the wires coming out of the amp as well.

If you are mounting car amps on a vehicle floor or panel you will want to make sure you know exactly what is on the other side of the panel you are screwing or drilling into. You do not want to screw into a brake or gas line, or even into your gas tank.

A lot of times you can install your car amps on the back or top of your subwoofer box. This can be very convenient if you take your car amps and subwoofers out of your trunk or hatch to make room for other items on a regular basis. Before starting your install is to make a plan before you start. Never rush your install giving yourself plenty of time to install your car amps and subwoofers.
