Biceps Exercise That Will Produce Eye-Popping Results

To those non-workout types, they’re simply known as “Popeye muscles,” the bulging beauties that the old, tattooed sailor would pop to life after tipping back an invigorating can of spinach.

Just as the cartoon hero would charge off to tear Brutus a new one, you should be trying to tear yourself some new biceps muscles. But you know and I know, it’ll take a lot more than that green stuff to sculpt them into rounded oranges.

While many cable exercises are ideal in toning the biceps muscles, try arming yourself with these numbing biceps exercises, aimed at developing strength and growth in those “Popeye Muscles”

CONCENTRIC CURLS: Sitting on a bench, grasp a dumbbell with one arm. With your back straight but leaning slightly forward, lock your elbow into the inside of your thigh. With your free hand, hold on to your knee for balance. Slowly begin curling the weight upward, toward your chest. Be sure to stabilize the rest of your body so that only your upper arm is moving. Slightly twist the hand holding the weight as you squeeze during the contraction. Hold for a two-count. Slowly bring the weight back toward the floor until your arm is straight and repeat the motion. After 10-12 reps, switch to the opposite hand and repeat the exercise. Try three sets on each arm. For a killer burn, do not take any rest period between arm rotation.

ALTERNATE DUMBELL CURLS Standing with your back straight, take a dumbbell in each hand, holding them to your sides. Slowly lift the weight with one arm, making sure it remains perpendicular to the floor with your elbows flush against your sides. Twist your arms inward during the range of motion, curling the weight toward your shoulder. Squeeze at the point of contraction and slowly begin the negative. As your hand descends toward the floor, simultaneously begin the curl with the opposite arm, raising it toward your torso. As your arm reaches the starting point on one side, the opposite arm should be contracting at the top. Try 3 sets of 15 for a great pump.

BARBELL CURLS Grab the barbell with your hands at shoulder width. With your arms straight toward the floor and your elbows locked an inch from your sides, begin curling the weight toward your chest. Do not move your elbows or your back. Bring the weight to the point of contraction, directly in front of your chest, squeezing your biceps. Begin the negative portion of the exercise, allowing the weight to slowly pull your hands back toward the floor and the extended-elbow position. Repeat the motion for 10 reps. Try 3 sets of this exercise.

Too often, weightlifters tend to over train biceps. Remember, biceps are not like legs or chest. They are a small muscle group so six sets of biceps are certainly sufficient. Too many sets of heavy barbell curls will leave your arms feeling shot and overdone.

Ultimate Outboard Propeller Information Guide

OUTBOARD PROPELLERS FOR GENERAL BOATING USE

The majority of you readers who are currently reading this probably have absolutely none to very little knowledge about outboard propellers and their functions.

Common questions that you might have would be like;

1. What propeller is best for my boat?

2. What’s the difference between 3 and 4 blade propellers?

3. Are there specific propellers for different outboard motors?

4. Can I run two different propeller pitches on my motors?

5. What’s propeller pitch?

6. What are people talking about when they mention counter – rotation propellers?

7. What’s the difference between stainless – steel propellers and aluminum propellers?

8. Would a stainless steel propeller work with my boat and motor?

9. If my propeller is broken, can I get it repaired?

10. And, what on earth is an outboard propeller?

Well, I can assure you that by the time you have finished reading this article, you WILL have a firm understanding what an outboard propeller is and what its functions are. You will have a good understanding as to what the best propeller for your boat setup would be and you will be able to make decisions based upon your own knowledge and not some sales consultant that is only intent upon selling you any old propeller regardless whether it is correct or not.

So, let’s get to answering those questions that I’m sure you have…

1. It is always difficult to establish which propeller would be best for a boat setup as everyone has different setups. There are certain guidelines for establishing the correct propeller application. 1. We look at what the RPM of the motor at Wide Open Throttle (WOT), this rpm should be between 5200 – 5500 for a 2stroke motor and between 5200 – 6000 for a 4stroke motor. If the rpm is higher than 5500 then you have a too lower pitch prop on and if it is below 5200 then you have a too higher pitch prop on. 2. We look at the amount of people that are normally on the boat. More weight means you would need a lower pitched propeller. 3. We look at the size of the boat and the size of the motor on the boat. In general, a bigger boat would result in a lower pitched prop and a bigger motor with more Horse Power (HP) would result in a higher pitched prop. 4. Most importantly, you have to see the characteristics of the boat on the water. If the boat battles to get on the plane then you would need a lower pitched prop and if the boat revs very high and doesn’t have much speed, then you would need a higher pitched prop.

2. The difference between a 3 and 4 blade propeller is; a 4 blade propeller gives you much better out the hole performance, a better more comfortable cruising speed, better handling characteristics from the boat and a better fuel efficiency as you can have the boat at a lower cruising speed. The 3 blade is a bit better in top end speed though.

3. Some aftermarket propellers come with a multi-fit kit thus enabling the propeller to fit on most makes of outboard motors.

4. On a twin motor installation you could run two different propeller pitches but there would be a distinct performance disadvantage and it is highly recommendable to get two propellers that are of the same pitch otherwise trying to balance equal thrust becomes almost impossible to do so.

5. Propeller pitch is the angle of the blades of the propeller to the hub of the propeller. Propeller pitch can also be described as the theoretical distance a propeller will move through the water for each revolution (i.e. a 21 pitch propeller should move a boat forward 21 inches for each revolution, assuming there is no slippage).

6. A counter rotation (or left hand rotation) propeller is a propeller that has its blades fixed in the opposite direction to that of an ordinary right hand rotation propeller. These two propellers are used in unison for larger boat setups with two high horsepower (normally above a 60HP motor) motors because due to the two propellers rotating in an inwards direction, it cancels out the torque affect that would normally be caused by the bigger motors. If counter rotation propellers are not used on bigger setups, the torque affect would make the boat very difficult to steer.

7. Aluminum propellers are a lot cheaper than stainless steel and normally come standard with outboard motors. Aluminum propellers flex when they are operated at higher speeds thus causing a general loss in performance. The outboard motor must also be at a fairly low setting on the boat transom as too little prop in the water with an aluminum would cause cavitation (when the prop slips in the water because of air bubbles in the water around the prop) problems. A stainless steel propeller remains rigid in the water thus eliminating flex thus giving much better performance. A stainless steel propeller also delivers outstanding acceleration and bow lift and delivers a much better handling performance. The stainless steel also lasts a lot longer in salt or polluted water than an aluminum propeller. The downsides of a stainless steel propeller are its cost.

8. Yes, a stainless steel will work with any boat setup; a standard aluminum setup is when the cavitation plate (that fin thing that is just above the propeller) is in line with the bottom of the boat. A stainless steel setup is when you raise that cavitation plate about 4 cm above the bottom of the boat (you normally raise the motor by about 2 holes on the transom but on certain setups it can vary). The reason that a stainless steel propeller can be higher out the water is because of its non – flex ability in the water. On smaller motors (less than 50HP) a stainless steel propeller doesn’t provide as bigger performance gain as on a bigger motor. THIS excludes racing where a stainless steel prop is definitely a better option.

9. Yes, providing the damage isn’t too serious, you can get the propeller professionally repaired at certain places.

10. A propeller is the funny looking thing that spins in the water when you move the throttle leaver backwards and forwards. It is not advisable to put your hand near it when it’s spinning!

Well, that’s it. I hope you found this article interesting and that you come away with a much better understanding of outboard propellers than when you started reading.

Frost Death Knight Leveling Build for Cataclysm

The Death Knight is a very powerful class when played correctly, but you won’t get to end game to experience that without the proper Frost Death Knight Leveling Build. Read on and I’ll share with you a few lesser known secrets to unlock the real potential of your class.

Why choose a Frost Death Knight Leveling Build?

Frost offers you extremely powerful burst damage. This is very desirable quality for both leveling and questing, bringing you a higher average experience per hour than other specs. In addition, a Frost Death Knight Leveling Build is very powerful in Dungeon DPS if you choose to level that way. Other factors that make this an excellent choice is flexibility in weapons. No other DK spec allows for dual wielding weapons. The down side, is that you have to specifically choose to either dual wield, or use 2-handed weapons. This opens up lots of weapon choices for you that you may have otherwise overlooked. In addition to the flexibility, the Frost tree’s burst damage can’t be compared to any other DK spec. Obliterate is the highest damaging Death Knight ability, and the Frost Death Knight Leveling Build revolves around this ability. In addition, Howling Blast is possibly the most powerful AoE in your Arsenal. Combined with the extra Runic Power regeneration, Powerful Frost strikes, and free Howling Blasts from Rime, you have a very powerful strategy.

Strategy for your Frost Death Knight Leveling Build

This is where things get a little difficult to explain. Frost DK’s have a very complicated rotation and priority system. You can burn down individual mobs in under three seconds, and small groups in great time. However, you have to know how to prioritize everything. For example, diseases should always be up. Frost Fever will always be up due to Rime, but it is hard to fit Plague Strike into your rotation. Killing Machine procs should be used immediately, and you should use them on Obliterates whenever available. Rime procs are prioritized right after Killing Machine. Use these as essentially free damage and runic power. Frost Strike is the lowest priority, and only to be used to dump Runic Power when Obliterate is not available, and Rime is not up.

Gear for a Frost Death Knight Leveling Build

You will be wearing Plate armor, and depending on your spec, you will equip either a 2-handed weapon, or you will dual wield 1-handed weapons. You want them to be slow, with high end damage. Strength is your primary damage stat, and will contribute directly to your damage dealt. Next you want to make sure that Hit is at least 5% so your special attacks don’t miss. After that, haste is your best friend until level 80. Faster weapon swings means more Killing Machine procs and Runic Power generation for 2-handed spec. Mastery is a great stat because of a huge buff to Frost Fever, Howling Blast, and Frost Strike. Crit is not too important since you get auto crits from Killing Machine, but it can buff your Howling Blasts for AoE pulls.

Grapple Trucks – Important Things to Know!

Grapple trucks have been profitable to many companies that need versatile equipment in lifting awkwardly heavy materials. A grapple truck is a truck with a boom attached that has a powerful hydraulic arm that is maneuvered by a joystick-like controller. This equipment is designed for heavy-duty applications and ready for extreme usage. Here are some facts about grapple trucks everyone should know.

Each Part Has a Purpose

Each of the grapple truck parts are especially designed to meet the certain operational demands.

  • Cylinders – These are generally designed to match any operating machine pressure. With larger grapple models, the bushings have the ability to self-align, the bolt-on head is designed to be cost-effective in maintenance; and heavy-duty models have a standard lock valve.
  • Rotators – With some models, the rotator is fully sealed and can be side-loading. On other models, there are extra ports available to use for saw or other replaceable accessories. Rotators are designed with full 360-degree continuous rotation. Many models are matched with the equipment’s capacity and have both productive time and maximum life operational requirements.
  • Pins – These are designed without adding weight but contribute to the structural integrity of the grapple. Most pins are manufactured from heat-treated chrome. They also have a safety inter-lock system. For oversized pins, they are usually mounted on bronze bushings for lower maintenance cost.

Utility Truck Body

Most company’s select utility trucks and choose the right body and tools that will fit their needs. They commonly choose removable loaders and use them when necessary. Utility trucks have been very useful for flood cleanups, construction, and forestry jobs; they are used by companies in order to save labor costs.

Operational Safety Training

Just like any other equipment, only trained personnel should be allowed to operate this powerful truck. Companies are responsible for appropriate training for safety which is very vital for efficiency and safety in accomplishing all work. There are things an operator should know about grapple truck functioning such as: hose ruptures; preventing leaks; holding a cylinder’s load; safety boom alarms; and many more. Some manufacturers offer various training methods, including video, on-site or internet training as well as the user’s manual.

Key Features

When buying a grapple truck, there are key features that need to be considered in selecting the right grapple attachments. The first thing to be considered is its durability – pin and bushing configurations should be thoroughly checked as well as the quality of the welds and pin tips wear-resistance. Another key feature to consider is the speed, as grapples should have a fast cycle time; this is critical for any production efficiency. Rotators and the hydraulic system should be thoroughly examined as well.

Maintenance and product support are also important features for the protection of the equipment and the purchasing company. Available maintenance will allow an owner to keep the equipment in proper shape. Product support is very helpful when a part does break down. The near-by availability of a service center would allow for rapid replacement of any broken part and a quick return to service for the vehicle.

It will always be important to know pertinent facts about grapple trucks to allow for proper selection decisions to be made. Hopefully this article has supplied those important facts to allow for the right decision to be made for any particular business need!

Understanding Boat Prop Torque

A boat is propelled by horsepower. In order to propel the boat the horsepower is converted into a twisting force. This twisting force is the boat prop torque. This twisting force is the force that rotates a propeller.

The maximum torque of most boat engines occurs below the maximum RPM specified in the manual of the engine. This usually poses a problem when selecting a prop. A propeller is chosen so that the engine runs close to the specified RPM. The torque is usually 50 percent of the RPM on a high speed engine. The ideal propeller torque should be about 70-85 percent of the top RPM of the engine. This will give greater efficiency, speed, and fuel efficiency and enhance engine longevity.

When a single propeller is used to drive a boat there is a torque reaction between the prop and the hull. This reaction is called the heeling torque. When the propeller moves in one direction it causes an equal and opposite torque in the direction of the turning of the propeller. This causes the hull to heel or tilt away from the direction in which the propeller is turning. Large boats have two propellers to reduce heeling. The starboard propeller is right handed while the port propeller is left handed. The hull and type of boat impacts the heeling torque of a boat.

Torque causes the boat to roll. When a propeller turns clockwise, the water resists the clockwise movement of the prop. When water resists the clockwise rotation, the boat rolls slightly in the opposite direction, counterclockwise or down on the left port side and up on the right starboard side. To offset this imbalance the driver’s seat on a boat is placed on the starboard or right side of the boat. Different boats roll in different ways as they react to the torque of a propeller. Discussing the needs of the individual boater’s needs with the manufacturer or dealer will help the boater obtain the propeller with the ideal prop torque for the type of use, boat and the engine.

The height at which the motor is placed on the transom impacts the torque of the propeller. If the motor is placed too low on the transom, the height of the motor on the transom is the reason why the boat moves without proper direction when the boater lets go of the steering wheel. If the motor is placed too low on the transom, the boat prop torque pulls the boat on one side. If the engine is placed too high on the transom then the torque reduces. The torque will be insufficient to help the steering of the boat.

When a boat moves in restricted space, the torque is the main determining factor of its performance. Torque affects the sideways movement of a boat. When the boat is being docked, the correct torque is required for greater accuracy in steering.

Understanding torque helps boaters handle abnormal balance problems in boats but making the required adjustments to counterbalance imbalances caused by torque.

Women’s Sexual Health – What Is a Sybian Vibrator?

Don’t let the Sybian vibrator intimidate you. It may look complicated and may cost more than your run-of-the-mill vibe, but let us tell you that the Sybian may just be the sex toy you’ve been dreaming of!

Designed by Dave Lampert, the Sybian Vibrator was first conceived in the 1970s but it wasn’t developed until 1983. Its name comes from Sybaris, an ancient Greek city in southern Italy, famous as a center of luxurious living, and Sybarite, which means a person who likes luxurious things.

The vibrator is attached to a large base that the woman straddles, and comes with up to four phallus-shaped washable attachments of varying sizes that are made from synthetic rubber. Just place the device on the floor and control the speed with a remote control that controls both power and vibration/rotation. It has two movements, and a vaginal insert rotates within the vagina and its speed goes from to very slow to very fast. The entire area that makes contact with the vulva vibrates, and so does the vaginal insert. This speed can also be controlled. The separate controls let you independently regulate the vibration and rotation, giving you simultaneous, intense stimulation of both the clitoris and the G-spot internal area.

Recommended by many sex therapists and counsellors, many women report having their first-ever orgasm thanks to a Sybian vibrator. Offering amazing G spot stimulation for about 75 percent of women, it offers a full-body, deep, powerful orgasm. It also sensitizes the G-spot, and when used for sexual therapy, it can help a woman achieve a deep orgasm that may be inhibited due to medications or emotional blocks.

Usually purchased either as a learning tool to develop sexual responses or as a means of deeper fulfillment, this vibe can teach women a lot about their sexual responses and potential. In fact, many women who use the Sybian report to regularly experience multiple orgasms. Other women say that they are now able to have orgasms during sexual intercourse thanks to this pleasurable machine.

There are many advantages to using a Sybian vibrator. It’s an excellent aid for bringing your sexy back for women over 60 years of age and it is erotic for lovers to watch their partner ride the Sybian. You can also use it as foreplay and for women who are multi-orgasmic, it can go long after your partner calls it a night. Since men are generally not as orgasmic and tend to lose their erection after ejaculation, the Sybian can be used to satisfy her needs before having intercourse or afterwards until she is fully satisfied.

Certainly giving new meaning to the term “ride ’em cowgirl,” the Sybian vibrator is ideal for women who are a bit more adventurous when it comes to sex toys, as well as for those who need have issues achieving an orgasm.

How to Switch to an Upright Golf Swing Plane and the Benefits it Has to Your Distance and Accuracy

As a golf instructor I can see no reason why golfers should not adopt an upright swing plane regardless of their physique or flexibility.

Yet, if you go online to search “golf swing plane” you will see multiple explanations about the subject and just as many differing versions about what is correct and what is not correct.

As I will show shortly from a purely mechanics and physics point of view, the benefits in distance and accuracy far outweigh those of a flatter swing plane and for those reasons alone I recommend and teach the concepts of adopting a more upright swing for all my students.

Swing plane angles are usually associated with a golfer’s height.

Golfers who are shorter in height are said to have a flatter swing plane.

It is also common to see golfers adopt a flat swing motion due to characteristics of their physique that limit the range of their swing flexibility, such as their chest and mid section size.

On the other hand taller golfers naturally swing with a more upright swing plane simply because of the increased height of their shoulders from the ground.

But, the physical characteristics of a golfer are not the only things that govern their swing plane angle.

What also determines swing plane is how they position themselves in their setup, and how they rotate their shoulders on the backswing…

Swing Plane Angle

Before I get into the specifics of an upright swing let me first define how the angle of the swing plane is often understood.

I say that because I am sure like most passionate golfers you have read Ben Hogan’s book “Five lessons. The modern fundamentals of golf” and his explanation of swing plane is probably one that is stuck firmly in your mind.

Here is his explanation…

Try to image a golfer forming a right angled triangle in their setup position.

The vertical side of the triangle is formed from the top of their shoulders/neck to the ground around their feet position. The horizontal side is formed from the club head and ball position to that point on the ground that meets the vertical side of the triangle.

The hypotenuse, or long side of the triangle, is determined from the club head to the point on their shoulders.

The classic understanding of the angle of the swing plane is that it is the angle between the hypotenuse and the horizontal side of this triangle. (Remember the plate of glass illustration in Hogan’s book resting on the golfers shoulder…)

You can now imagine how this angle would increase or decrease due to the height of the golfer and why swing plane is often associated with the golfers shoulder height.

The reason why I say this is how swing plane angle is often determined is that there is a big assumption with this theory that is incorrect most of the time…

What it assumes is that the club head swing path follows this same angle throughout the backswing so that the high point of the swing lies on an extended line that is drawn from the ball through the top of the shoulders to the hands at the top of the swing…

The reality is that the angle at which the swing “actually” rotates can be totally different resulting in the hands reaching the top point of the swing either below or above the point of the “Hogan plate glass definition.”

The reason for this is that the swing plane angle is not only influenced by your setup, it is mostly determined by the plane around which your shoulders rotate.

Your setup might show one swing plane angle that may be entirely different from the actual plane of rotation of your shoulders.

Here’s why…

Rotational Planes of your Shoulders

To understand your shoulder rotation motion, stand upright in front of a mirror. Hold your arms out straight from each side. You can rotate your shoulders in a horizontal plane around the axis of your spine… which is easy to do.

Now try and rotate your shoulders in a vertical plane by lifting your right arm and dropping your left arm so that you maintain a straight line from hand to hand across your shoulders. The axis of rotation in this plane is a point on your chest just below your chin….this motion is not very easy to execute.

The reality of your shoulder turn on the backswing is that it is operating in a combination of both vertical and horizontal motion.

As you would expect, a shoulder turn that is moving more in the horizontal plane will create a flatter swing plane.

One that is operating more in a vertical plane will produce a more upright swing plane.

So when we go back to the classic Hogan explanation of the swing plane being governed by the setup and height of the golfer, the only way that a golfer will be on that same plane at the top of their swing is if the combined horizontal and vertical movements of their shoulder turn happens to match that angle.

This seldom occurs…

Having this understanding that swing plane is affected more by your shoulder rotation than your setup and height allows you to make adjustments to your backswing to gain some of the benefits from an upright swing path.

Here are some of the key reasons why I always recommend a more upright swing plane that are based on the mechanics and physics of the swing.

Improved Consistency of your Swing Accuracy

The first reason affects the accuracy and ball flight path of your shot.

If you have ever reviewed my free video on the “Understanding the mechanics of common swing faults” where I outline the physics of why your shots “fly” in the manner the do , the outcome of all your golf shots boils down to two major factors:

o The direction your shoulders are aiming at the point of contact with the ball

o The orientation of your club head face at the point of contact with the ball

The flatter your swing plane the more your shoulders are moving in the horizontal plane.

This means they are only “aiming” at the target at a point just before contact and shortly after contact. That is because the club head motion is moving more “across” the target line like a baseball swing rather than towards the target line like a putting swing.

Outside of this very small region the direction your shoulders are aiming is further to the right of the target on the down swing and further to the left of the target on the follow through (opposite for lefties).

The success of a flatter swing plane requires a high degree of “timing” and balance in the swing through the contact point since there is very little margin for error.

The level of “ball spin” generated by a poorly timed swing also determines the accuracy of the shot.

The relative difference between the shoulder swing plane and the orientation of the club face at the point of contact determines the amount of spin generated on the ball.

The more the shoulders are moving “across” the target line the greater the ball spin created leading to exaggerated hooks or slices.

On the other hand an upright swing is produced by the shoulders moving more in the vertical plane which means the time the shoulders are moving down the target line is a lot longer during the swing.

The result is that the club head moves down the target line over a larger region of the swing giving a higher margin of error for timing and balance problems.

The impact on ball spin is also reduced, because the shoulders swing less “across” the target line at contact for a poorly timed shot.

In both cases the consistency of your swing accuracy will improve the more upright your swing plane angle…

Higher Swing Power and Distance

Observe all of the big hitters on tour and one of the common features you will notice is most adopt an upright swing.

I wrote about this in a previous Turnberry newsletter but it is worth reviewing the reasons why an upright swing plane generates more power for the swing:

o The hands and club head will be higher off the ground at the top of the swing generating more “potential energy” for the swing. When you think of the energy that can be created by hoisting a 20-30lb weight above your shoulders and dropping it, you will understand where increased energy comes for the swing. That weight being the combined weight of your club and arms.

o You use your powerful muscles down your right side and the top of your left shoulder which can generate more power for the swing than using the power of your lower back muscles rotating around the base of your spine in a flatter swing.

Improved Balance

Your balance during the backswing and downswing is affected by the centrifical force of rotating the club head as it is in motion and on what angle that force is acting on your trunk.

The centrifical force generated by the club head moving in a circular path acts to pull your shoulders forward toward the ball which can affect the stability of your trunk during your swing.

To give you and exaggerated example of the effect this might have on your balance, try to imagine the action of an athlete throwing the hammer.

In this case the athlete has to overcome the enormous centrifical force needed to rotate the hammer by “leaning back” in order to stay balanced during the spin.

A flatter swing plane has a similar impact on the balance of the golfer who has to counter the effect of the centrifical force need to rotate the club head with the lower back muscles in order to hold the trunk in position during the swing.

During an upright swing this centrifical force is being generated more up through the trunk and legs from the ground generating less effect on your lower back muscles allowing your trunk to remain more stable.

How to Generate an Upright Swing

As much as you might expect your setup to impact the plane angle, it impacted more by your shoulder rotation.

I encourage you to start your swing with a “downward rotation” of your left shoulder…

Many golfers initiate their swing by moving their hands.

For golfers who may be stiff in their trunk flexibility, shoulders or may have a few inches more around their mid section than they would like, starting the swing with their hands encourages them to “wrap” their swing around their body causing a flat swing plane.

That is because their shoulders are moving more in the horizontal plane.

The net swing results can be excessive slicing, with the ball starting the flight path heavily to the left, or pushing the ball to the right.

This is because the region where the club head is moving down the target line is very small lowering the margin of error for accuracy in the swing as I covered earlier.

Start your swing by a downward movement of the left shoulder and you will counter this problem.

It ensures your swing begins with more of a vertical rotation of the shoulders. By doing so your shoulders will be rotating more down the target line.

Mirror Exercise for Correct Setup

The other area that will affect your swing plane is your setup.

I encourage you to practice this swing initiation drill with your left shoulder turn in front of a mirror at home.

As you turn watch your hand motion. Adjust your setup in order to make it easier to turn vertically and move your hands along a more upright swing plane.

Here are a few pointers to help you:

o Let your arms hang vertically down in the stance with your hands positioned no more than six inches away from your leg

o Keep your back straight from the hips up. Do not let your shoulder hunch forward

o If you are large chested you may want to lean forward more in the stance to give your arms more clearance to move straight back rather than wrap around your body

As you go through this routine you are likely to feel muscle stiffness in the back swing that you are not used to…especially in your left shoulder.

That is because it is much easier to rotate your shoulders horizontally around your spine than to rotate them vertically.

This is normal since the motion in the vertical plane uses different muscles in your golf swing.

Shoulder Flexibility

Many golfers are just too stiff in the shoulders to do this effectively and when they first try an upright swing plane on the range they find the results disappointing.

Should this occur, shorten your backswing considerably because the stiffness of your golf muscles in the upright swing plane is causing other areas of your swing to breakdown.

Caution: Never allow your left elbow to break when trying to swing more upright. You will defeat the purpose of the adjustment to a higher swing plane and only cause yourself more timing problems.

An exercise I recommend to improve shoulder flexibility in the vertical plane is to take a broom handle and place it across your shoulders and then wrap your elbows and arms over the top of the handle.

For some people this may be a stretching exercise in itself, so do it gently without stressing the shoulder muscles.

Now move the handle straight down one side as far as you can go, and hold for 60 seconds. As you hold the stretch, do not allow your hips to move sideways in the opposite direction as this will counter the stretch.

Likewise keep your trunk upright and straight as much as possible during the stretch.

Now do the same motion in the opposite direction.

After a few days of this stretch, you will find your distance on the range will improve as you begin to extend your backswing more. However, you should see marked improvement your accuracy consistency right from the start the more you swing down the target line.

Good Luck!

Les

Girls Can Jump Higher Too

The increase in popularity in girls’ basketball has coincided with an increase in knee injuries. Girls tend to demonstrate less muscle mass and strength than boys. It’s extremely important that they have training and drills specifically developed with their characteristics in mind. It’s also best that girls be involved in this training and start doing these drills as early as possible because the injuries later on are generally the result of unwise practices when they were younger.

For example, girls under 12 years tend to play everything in an upright position. This causes muscles in the trunk, hips, and legs to be underdeveloped. If these weaknesses are not changed as early as possible, the girls will continue to play in this position and the muscles they need to play as adolescents and adults will not be strong enough.

Women jump differently than men do. They jump and land in a more upright position. They land harder, and the knee position is flawed. Arms, legs, and feet need to be coordinated and initiation needs to come from the core or near the navel. Male athletes land with a force about two-and-a-half times their body weight. Females tend to land with five times their body weight. This, of course puts greater strain on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage around the knee. This comes from the too-upright landing as well as a rotating movement of the knee.

Also, lower leg alignment weaknesses may play a role in the number of ACL tears as well as other knee injuries. Because she has a wider angle at the pelvis and lower back curve, the upper leg bone tends to rotate inward. The knees just naturally become “knock-kneed.” This puts stress on the knee and the ACL because of the inward rotation.

Correct jumping techniques include landing on the ball of the foot and sinking into the heel; flexing hips, knees, and ankles; keeping the back straight; keeping the chest over the knees and the knees over the second toe.

The key to jumping higher for female athletes is to find a trainer who understands the limitations and the capabilities. They can learn to jump higher and avoid injury with the appropriate training.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Spur Gears

Gear is one kind of mechanical parts. It can be widely used in industries. A gear is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part in order to transmit torque.

Spur gear is the simplest type of gear which consists of a cylinder or disk. Its form is not straight-sided, thus, the edge of each tooth is straight and aligned parallel to the axis of rotation. Only gears fit to parallel axles can they rotate together correctly.

As the most common type, spur gears are often used because they are the simplest to design and manufacture. Besides, they are the most efficient. When compared to helical gears, they are more efficient. The efficiency of a gear is the power output of its shaft divided by the input power of its shaft multiplied by 100. Because helical gears have sliding contact between their teeth, they produce axial thrust, which in turn produces more heat. This causes a loss of power, which means efficiency is lost.

In addition to these, they also have many other advantages. Spur gears have a much simpler construction than helical gears because their teeth are straight rather than angular. Therefore, it is much easier to design and produce them. And they will not fail or break easily. And this makes them cheaper to purchase and to maintain which then leads to less cost.

Although they are common and efficient, spur gears have disadvantages as well. Firstly, they are very noisy when used at some speeds because the entire face engages at once. Therefore, they’re also known as slow-speed gears. Secondly, they can only be used to transfer power between parallel shafts. They cannot transfer power between non-parallel shafts. Thirdly, when compared with other types of gears, they are not as strong as them. They cannot handle as much of a load because the teeth are small and situated parallel to the gear axis, rather than being large and situated diagonally as the teeth on a helical gear are.

According to the above, we can conclude that spur gears have many advantages as well as some disadvantages. Although sometimes, its disadvantages may affect them a lot, their advantages still outweigh their disadvantages. That is to say, spur gears are still popular among many industries. And they can have good performances to meet people’s requirements.
