Vehicle Tracker for the Road Transport Industry

Civilian Applications of GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has advanced in leaps and bounds in just a few decades. This technology has indelibly impacted such areas of human activity as road transport, aviation, shipping, rail transport, security, heavy vehicle guidance, surveying, mapping, geophysics, telecommunication services, financial services and social activities. To name but a few!

This marvelous digital technology is transmitted absolutely free of cost from earth orbiting satellites (certainly a God Send for all of us!) where its signals are beamed directly to low cost receiver hand chipsets. This has made the GPS technology very affordable to all civilian applications. Consider the following areas of GPS applications:

Road Transport

GPS technology enables all kinds of vehicles to accurately navigate their travel paths, choose their travel routes, identify their locations at any given time on their route and identify land marks. This indeed is a boon to all drivers of all vehicles when traveling within a city or from city to city. Another very important feature that GPS technology offers its end users is a 24/7 vehicle tracking and monitoring system. GPS technology enables fleet transport owners to monitor their vehicles at any given time, be it day or night time. For private owner vehicles, the family member driving the vehicle can be conveniently tracked and monitored by other family members at any given time of the day or night. The tracking and monitoring software for the GPS device is very conveniently downloaded on smart phone handsets and / or tablets for immediate, clear and uninterrupted signal reception. The GPS software can be conveniently downloaded on many smart phone handsets or tablets that would enable more than one viewer to track and monitor the vehicle driver. The GPS trackers are miniature wireless devices that are installed in a particular location within the vehicle so that it is properly concealed. In the case of vehicle theft or carjacking the vehicle thief or criminal will be unable to see the GPS tracking and monitoring device and therefore will not be aware of its presence. What is even very important is that the entire travel route and the last detected location of the stolen vehicle can be very easily shared with the local police for their investigative tracking and recovery of your vehicle.

In more advanced GPS tracker device systems, light or heavy vehicles can be accurately monitored for such vital parameters as driver behavior, fuel capacity and consumption, door open and shut alerts, image monitoring – transmission of camera images, both internal and external, to smart phone. Another Special GPS advance technology enabled components to monitor driver and passenger attendance and presence can be installed on city tourist and interstate coaches. These components include Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Bio Metrics Identification. These GPS enabled technologies allow for monitoring driver and passenger attendance through multiple transits that are enroute to the final destination.

In the case of heavy duty container vehicles that carry such items as food perishables (which require a constant and steady internal temperature), the internal container temperature can be monitored by the driver as well as the remote monitoring station right through the journey or at any given time enroute to the destination.

The Golden Road of Salvation: Justification, Reconciliation, Adoption, Sanctification, Glorification

What happens the moment you accept God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as your Savior and Master? Many people believe you have received eternal life that instant. But the truth is that the road to eternal life is a life-long journey, and eternal life is only one portion of the bundle of blessings that come with salvation for a faithful Christian. Here, let us explore the various stages of salvation and its everlasting blessings and privileges.

Stage 1: Justification

Pretend that today, you have accepted Christ as your Savior and Lord by acknowledging your sins, confessing them and seeking for God’s forgiveness, and willingly submitting to God’s will and commandments to govern the rest of your life. The moment you repent by turning to Christ, you have been justified by your faith.

Justification through faith is to receive the declaration of righteousness. God declares you as righteous, with all your past sins forgiven, when you put faith in His Son. Your plate of sins has been wiped clean. As a result, you have become a new creation with a new beginning: “The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, WEB)

Stage 2: Reconciliation

Justification brings reconciliation. Prior to accepting Jesus Christ into your heart and life, you had been an enemy of God due to your sinful lifestyle (Colossians 1:21; Romans 5:10). But once you are justified through faith, you have been reconciled with God, where the wall of hostility between God and you has been broken down.

Because you have been justified and reconciled, you are now blessed with the peace with God. “Peace with God” is an essential and foundational element of fellowship with God. You cannot have a relationship with God without peace. Such peace is also the peace that helps you to remain at peace during life’s hardships. This peace is granted by God, not developed by yourself. Only when you are justified and reconciled will you possess such peace.

Stage 3: Adoption

As someone who has been justified and reconciled, you have now been adopted as a child of God. It is from this moment onward that you can call God “Abba” (“Father”) (Romans 8:15). Thus, while God is the Creator of every person, He is the Father of only those who have accepted His Son. Sonship comes only through Jesus Christ.

As God’s adopted child, you have become the heir of God and a co-heir with Jesus Christ. The heir of God will be glorified together with Jesus Christ (Romans 8:17). Glorification is the final stage of salvation, which I’ll touch upon later.

Stage 4: Sanctification

Upon adoption into God’s family, your new life has begun according to God’s will. At this stage of salvation, God will gradually and steadily mold you into the person He wants you to be. He will develop in you the fruit of the Holy Spirit, which is Christ-like qualities that include love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). This is progressive sanctification, the process of setting you apart for God’s holy use and purpose by conforming you to Jesus’ spiritual image (Romans 8:29; 1 Thessalonians 4:7).

The first three stages–justification, reconciliation, and adoption–are all works done exclusively by God. But the process of sanctification is team work: you have to work with God to achieve God’s will in your life. You have to cooperate by obeying His voice and allowing Him to lead your life.

How will God lead you and guide you in following Him? He will lead you through His Holy Spirit, which He has given to you upon your acceptance of His Son for your salvation. The Holy Spirit will regenerate you, mature you spiritually, and sanctify you for good works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:10).

As the Holy Spirit leads you, you have the choice to obey or disobey it. God does not take away your free will. Therefore, it is up to you whether you will live according to God’s will as a true child of God, or rebel against Him.

Listen to what Jesus said: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:21-23)

Yes, the sanctification stage of salvation is one crucial stage! If you fail to do the will of God and deliberately go on sinning after you have accepted Jesus Christ, then a “certain fearful expectation of judgment” awaits you:

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries. A man who disregards Moses’ law dies without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will he be judged worthy of, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, ‘Vengeance belongs to me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will repay.’ Again, ‘The Lord will judge his people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:26-31)

“For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put him to open shame. For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it, and brings forth a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God; but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned.” (Hebrews 6:4-8)

Indeed, you have been justified by your faith. But understand that faith without works is dead: “What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him? And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, and one of you tells them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled’; and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. Yes, a man will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” (James 2:14-18)

Even the demons believe in God (James 2:19), but are they going to receive salvation? No, unless they repent and prove their faith is genuine by works.

Read what God’s Word says about faith and works working together for justification:

“Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness’; and he was called the friend of God. You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith. In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:21-26)

Sanctification will last your entire lifetime. Like a child who cannot physically mature overnight, you will reach spiritual maturity gradually, as you live and learn from God’s principles in the Bible. Whenever you sin, you will have to confess your sin to God, who will forgive you (1 John 1:9).

By living according to God’s will, you will experience immeasurable joy as you fellowship with your Creator and His Son: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and don’t tell the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)

“Wherein [in God’s salvation] you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials, that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ–whom not having known you love; in whom, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” (1 Peter 1:6-8)

Stage 5: Glorification

When Jesus returns to Earth at his second coming, he will be revealed in all his glory (Luke 9:26). Upon his arrival, all the Christians who have ever passed away will be resurrected to meet him in the sky (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Jesus “will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory.” (Philippians 3:21) Thus, upon your resurrection as a Christian, you will be revealed in gory just as our Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 3:2). You will be raised incorruptible, for “this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality… then what is written will happen: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.'” (1 Corinthians 15:53, 54)

This, my friend, will be the final stage of your salvation. You have first been justified, sanctified, and now glorified. As a new glorified individual, you will never experience or know again pain, sickness, suffering, or death (Revelation 21:4). Instead, you will live in love, peace, and security in the presence of your Creator, Yahweh God Almighty, and His Son, Jesus Christ, your Savior, for all eternity (Revelation 21:3; Revelation 22:3-5).

This is why “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.” (Romans 8:18)

Therefore we ought not to faint at our current sufferings and hardships; even though we are decaying outwardly, yet we’re being spiritually renewed day by day, for “our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18)

Let’s all pray that upon our death, we will be able to echo apostle Paul’s words: “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8) In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Modern Paving Contractors Provide Clearing and Repairing of Roads

Humans have always had the sense to clear their pathways since earlier times. This ensured a safety return, back to their starting point without having to worry about getting lost on their return journey.

It is of out-most significance that the route leaving from one start to the destination is properly outlined in order to allow the traveler to mark the difference in the lengths he might have covered.

The perfection in modern roads is a result of several years of experience in experimentation that involved the evolution from one solution into another perfect, final solution. Modern Paving Contractors have intensified the quality of roads by using asphalt in constructing the roads.

The modern roads

The roads that are constructed these days involve highly engineered techniques in order to provide strength and durability to the structure. Asphalt, which is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid, is used as a binder in road construction.

Asphalt roads usually comprises of a foundation or support for the surface. This surface needs to be stable and solid as it will act as the platform which will hold the traffic; it is supported by the soil as it is bedded on top of the soil. With the asphalt, a mixture of mineral is cemented together to prevent the surface from the wear and disintegration that takes place because of constant usage. A mash-up of broken stone, coated with binder/asphalt then fills up the space between the surface and the base frame to provide better sustenance to the road.

Obstacles on the roads

The services that modern paving company provides are road works such as constructing the driveways, parking areas, or patching the road curbs, sealing crack, building speed bumps etc. on any kinds of facilities or properties.

On cases of obstructions caused by natural climatic conditions, paving companies provide services for clearing the roadway from the debris lying on top of the road. The team of workers’ removes the obstacles by utilizing various machinery like cranes and lifts; they also make use of manual labor where these huge machines cannot fit through.

Road Repairing

Road construction requires quite a bit of investment and time, so in case of minor damages a patch up work will make the road fully functional again.

Road maintenance should be highlighted in every point because a good road prevents a lot of hazards and casualties from taking place.

The Potentialities Of The Road For Progress As Well As Destruction In Wole Soyinka’s Play The Road

Soyinka’s early play The Road offers him a mirror through which he looks at, examines critically as well as laughs at the faults foibles and pretensions in emergent African societies. This is of course a very familiar concern in all genres of African Literature. Wole Soyinka is therefore not out of place in preoccupying himself and his readers or audiences with it in his play The Road

The Road assembles a ragtag band of thugs, would-be lorry drivers and layabouts who construct a shantytown near a used motor parts store. Presiding over this store and influencing if not leading this motley gang is a former Anglican lay-reader and Sunday School teacher who has assumed the title of Professor. As he wanders the roads of which he is the professor apparently, he searches for auto parts from wreckages emanating from accidents.

Though this play lacks a linear narrative flow it engages the audience well on the myriad issues bedeviling emerging Modern African societies: poor urban planning, rural-urban migration, unemployment, poverty, vagrancy, delinquency and corruption. Soyinka thus combines social commentary, bawdy comedy, and poetic philosophical inquiry with a caustic satirizing of a heartlessly materialistic and pretentious society.

The prevalence of coercion and repression in running modern African societies is suggested .through Chief-In-Town and his recruitment of thugs to serve as bodyguards for political meetings. We are thus given a glimpse into the violent political methods by which African political parties endeavour to keep themselves perpetually in power, a phenomenon which seems to have persisted in Nigeria even up to recently.

Corruption, another feature of contemporary African societies, is portrayed. Corruption is embodied in the person of the policeman, Particulars Joe, who receives bribes from drivers who contravene the law, looks out for more bribes in other unexpected places. He shares hemp with the political thugs even whilst still in uniform. Ironically he who should be at the helm of maintaining law and order is the one who initiates its violation. The society presented in the play then strikes one as veering on anarchy with no one trying to uphold the law. Drivers, for instance, violate the law by buying forged licenses and driving without going through the necessary instruction and training. As a consequence deaths occur frequently on the roads. The corruption is pervasive, seeping through all areas even through the so-called crème de la crème whose depraved moral Samson satirizes here:

Now I want you to take the car – the long one – and

Drive along the Marina at two O’clock. All the fine girls

Just coming from offices, the young and tender faces

Fresh from school – them lift to my house. Old

Bones like me must put fresh tonic in his blood.

Samson in parodying the wealthy whom he mock-envies, blames the growing moral degeneration of the young on them. For as it seems normal for him as a wealthy man to behave so, he would send his sleek car cruising along the Marina at two o’clock when all the young girls would be out of school so that he could collect all the fine ones among them and lift them on to his house to gratify his lecherous desires. One could imagine the untold social problems such reckless activities create. But when we learn later of the criteria for upward mobility we should expect the worst outcomes. There is the case of the messenger who became a senator after winning ‘thirteen thousand’ with which he bought half the houses in Apapa.

Religion itself is of an equally if not more debased and superficial nature. Little spirituality is evident in its procedures. Professor’s display of vanity in his past life in the church indicates what propels people to fight for important posts there. Saluki thus aptly puts it: ‘Dat one no to church, na high society.’ The Professor had been a showy man in his church life placing more emphasis on his speech delivery and his pretence of holiness even to the extent of bowing at every mention of Jesus and self-righteously wiping his brow. His pilfering of church funds is another hint of his corruption, and his insincerity to God. The professor typifies a whole set of pretentious and corrupt church officials who are lured on to the call not by spiritual devotion but a cunning desire to increase their wealth. The church has thus lost almost all of its glory – thus becoming like yet another social club. The Professor therefore enters it with a particularly pompous gait thus capturing the congregation’s attention and keeping it until he arrives at his pew. [p162] His vanity is further exposed by his habitually reserving a pew for himself so much so that if even ‘a stranger went and sat in it, the church warden wasted no time driving him out.’ [p162] Thus the whole church is constantly engulfed in bouts from which even the Bishop too is not excluded. He is clearly envious of the greater attention won from the congregation by Professor whose lessons knock his sermon out flat leaving half the church asleep. The other half manages to remain awake whilst the Bishop continues preaching impervious to what was going on by watching Professor taking notes. The materialism, exhibitionism and falsity motivating people to be active in church is thus exposed:

In the absence of spirituality to redeem such a society from the depths of materialism and corruption, decay is most imminent.. This society is ruled by a special kind of heartless materialism in which people thrive on trading on other’s misfortunes. Professor for instance, creates accidents through which he trades on the possessions of the victims. So dehumanized have they become that they are shorn of all forms of human compassion. Ties of kinship or friendship do not obstruct the course of this callous business. When Sergeant Burma realized that the driver of the crashed vehicle from which he was strippling parts was an old comrade from the front, it was only then he showed Christian charity alright but not without helping himself as usual. Sergeant Burma only took his friend’s body to the mortuary after he had stopped to remove all the tyres from the vehicle. The social problems emanating therefrom are myriad including juvenile delinquency, crime, thuggery and violence as evident in the reckless activities of Tokyo Kid and his gang of hemp-smokers.. This is also manifested in the thieving Professor and many others indulge in.

Kongi’s rule and the road share destructive potentials. Kongi could be seen as representing the modern paranoid dictator. Instead of being a procreative force he engenders and spreads destruction, decapitating his opponents and showing no genuine interest in the fertility rites of the soil and of the flesh. Thus in Hemlock he is regarded as a monster which should have been scorched before it achieved its full destructive proportions. This destructive potential is also invested in the road which normally brings progress and development to hitherto remote and inaccessible areas. The road is presented as a cunning and timely monster patiently and quietly waiting to pounce on an unwary victim and gobble it up ravenously. The road users – drivers, their touts, their passengers and general hangers-on are perpetually exposed to death on the roads for as is suggested: ‘The road and the spider lie gloating, then the fly buzzes along like a happy fool,’ [p178] The happy fool who buzzes along oblivious of the fact that it is running happily into a gruesome end represents aptly the gruesome fate awaiting the hapless road-users. The precariousness of their existence is further amplified through Kotonou’s rhetorical but grim catalogue of departed heroes whose passing heroism is ironic for their death has no noble cause.

Where is Zorro who never returned from the North

Without a basket of guinea-fowl eggs? Where is

Akanni the lizard? I have not seen any other

Tout who would stand on the lorry’s roof and

Play the samba at sixty miles an hour.

Where is Sigidi Ope? Where is Sapele Joe

Who took on six policemen at the crossing

And knocked them all into the river?

Samson:

Overshot the pontoon, went down with

His lorry [p 157]

All these devotees of the road after a whole life living off it and worshipping it have been consumed by it and thus transformed into ironic though legendary heroes. One such scene is vividly captured by Professor with all its horrors: ‘come then, I have a new wonder to show you… a madness where a motorcar throws itself against a tree – Gbram! And showers of crystal flying in broken souls.’ Then moving on to an even grimmer note, he emphasizes ‘the quick onset of physical decay after death.’ Which he is quick to admit ‘is a market of stale meat, noisy with flies and quarrelsome with old women.’ [p.158-9]

Much further on in racy language, Say Tokyo Kid recalls an accident scene:

You know, just last week I pass an accident in

The road. There was a dead dame and you know

What her pretty head was spread with? Yam

Porrage. See what I mean? A swelldame is gonna

Kin smear her head in yam porrage. [p 172-3]

Professor also exploits the hazards of the road for his own personal gratification irregardless of the resulting suffering. He cares less as to whether those he issues licenses to are qualified to drive or not thus being another contributing factor to the increasing dangers on the road.

The road’s destructiveness – devouring human lives in huge numbers – is indeed a reflection of the destruction and dog-eat-dog acquisitiveness we see in all the characters. And again they could be seen as mirroring a cruel and corrupt society which makes no room for creation or development. Through biting satire Soyinka registers his distaste for such ugly aspects of modern African societies..

The ending of the play leaves no hope in us for the purging of such societies. The Professor’s perennial searching for a perverted version of the Word is a clear indication of the reversed values of the modern African society. In the end he attains the way – death. This suggests that the road of modern society, just like the physical road, can only lead to destruction, Thus before dying the Professor passes on his insight:

Be even like the road itself. Flatten your

bellies with the hunger of an unpropitious day, power

your hands with the knowledge of death….Breathe

like the road. Be the road. Coil yourself in dreams,

lay flat in treachery and deceit and at the moment

of a trusting step, rear your head and strike the

traveler in his confidence, swallow him whole, or break

him on the earth. Spread a broad sheet for death with

the length and the time of the sun between you until the

one face multiplies and the one shadow is cast by all

the doomed:

How Human Roads And Highways Hurt Wildlife Habitats – Forcing Adaptation And Evolution

Evolution allows species to adapt to their environment, so that the species can fulfill a niche and live to procreate and carry on. Those species that didn’t evolve fast enough and were unable to change their localized living spaces are either no longer with us, or risk joining the list of endangered species and then, perhaps eventual extinction. Let’s discuss how humans are modifying not only our own environment but the environment we share with other species and how that affects their adaptations and evolutionary process.

There was an interesting article in Science News online recently titled; “Roads are driving rapid evolutionary change in our environment – Study explains why road ecology matters,” published on February 17, 2017 about a study from Dartmouth College which stated: “Roads are causing rapid evolutionary change in wild populations of plants and animals according to a new paper. The study looks at the evolutionary changes that are being caused by the way roads slice and dice our plane.”

Amongst the four major ways our roads are messing with wildlife are:

(1) Road Kill

(2) Toxic Fumes from Vehicles

(3) Invasive Species

(4) Changes in Sediment and Water Flow Run-off

But, to this list I’d like to add road noise, interfering in the hunting and evading process of nature, and urban heat island effect. Also, hunting by humans, easier access to animals that hangout near roads for road kill, warmth, or water runoff – and poisoning by humans who put out poisons to prevent rodents and gophers from digging borrows under the road way or into nearby flood control levees and infrastructures. So, let’s call these:

(5) Road Noise – Harder to hear predators or prey

(6) Heating – Roads are hotter

(7) Human Hunting Access

(8) Poisoning – Rodent control on roadway ditches, sidewalks, road base

There are many road Kill studies – one I often like to cite is by Sean Anderson of California State University Channel Islands in CA. One of his graduate students has a thesis of interest; “Web-Based Reporting System for Road Kill” which was an incredibly insightful project as to just how many animals are killed each year in rural areas in California. Those animals who avoid roads live to procreate, those who don’t often get smushed, providing protein for scavengers who take advantage of this new food supply – sometimes at their own peril.

Those animals that listen for cars, or watch carefully and react quickly survive and thrive, procreate and continue. Nocturnal Animals that do not freeze in car headlights – well, they live and procreate too, those who don’t perish and become road pizza.

There have been many stories about Mountain Lions killed on Southern California Freeways – attempting to cross. You’d think a mountain lion would learn and be agile enough to get out of the way – not so, as nothing they’ve ever encountered weighs 6,000 lbs. and chases after them at 60+ miles per hour, so they are not on the lookout for cars. Although some of the mountain lions tagged have routinely crossed freeways in CA, maybe they are learning and adapting, teaching their young, maybe in 20-generations adaptations will start to appear as they evolve for this new threat?

A recent statistical study showed that the average point in the US is less than 1/2 mile from a paved road. Our wildlife has to adapt or die to deal with these changes in their environment. You can just imagine the many ways these and other issues are changing their evolutionary adaptation. Pigeons have adapted to live in the city, in parks, along with other species – completely changing the dynamics of their normal evolutionary process, simply because everything we do, affects something else. BTW – I am not an environmentalist or an advocate for wildlife, but no one can deny what I’ve said here today is not real.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Positive Thinking Road Map to Guaranteed Success!

Arnold Schwarzenegger started life in a tiny village of Graz in Austria. It was his father who first encouraged him to participate in some kind of sport.

However it wasn’t until the age of 15 that he first began lifting weights. But even at that early age he was decisive and positive declaring:

“I want to be the best built man in the world. Then I want to go to America and be in movies. I want to be an actor.”

And with this sort of drive and intention he became unstoppable, for after just five years of training he was declared Mr Universe – The Greatest Bodybuilder on the planet. ‘Arnie’ subsequently went on to raise the bar further constantly pushing himself to 13 more major titles. It was clear that his laser beam focus and concentration played a great part in his success and that his inner power was the key to much of his success as to his outer lifting abilities.

“I knew I was going to be a bodybuilder. It wasn’t simply that either. I would be the best bodybuilder in the world, the greatest, the best-built man.”

Through meticulous gathering of knowledge of his subject and immense passion and devotion, success was always going to be his but only because he made it for himself, no-one did it for him….he wasn’t lucky! Far from it, he created his own reality.

“I wanted more, I demanded more of myself.”

It is clear now that Arnold had tremendous belief in himself and refused to give in or waver from his goals. He knew what he wanted then went and got it, no matter what. He regularly used creative visualization produce astonishing results.

In his bodybuilding life his mind was:

“utterly dominated by Reg Park. His image was my ideal. It was fixed indelibly in my mind.”

Reg Park was another top bodybuilder whom he wished to defeat.

“The more I focused in on this image and worked and grew, the more I saw it was real and possible for me to be like him.”

Arnold had clearly discovered the power of mind over the body. He also realized emotional distractions and worry weakened him. These negative influences took strength away from his workouts which he hated. It came to his notice that the people surrounding him also made a difference. Negative people tended to try to stifle him, not believing in his goals and focused lifestyle. He found negative people were not at ease around him until they had either pulled him down or he had won them around to his way of positive thinking.

“I remember certain people trying to put negative thoughts into my mind, trying to persuade me to slow down. But I had found the thing to which I wanted to devote my total energies and there was no stopping me.”

He was determined not to let anyone distract him no matter what. He was persistent in his efforts and held his dreams in his mind always. Arnold clearly understood the principle that: success breeds success, declaring:

“Positive thinking can be contagious. Being surrounded by winners helps you develop into a winner.”

Arnold’s tremendous progress as a teenager continued. He continuously challenged himself through his self imposed goals and bust through many road blocks inwardly and outwardly but in short…his dream was coming true!

“I wanted that body and I didn’t care what I had to go through to get it.”

At just 18 Arnie was called up for his military national service joining the tank corp. However this put him in a difficult position as it meant he wouldn’t be allowed to compete in the junior ‘Mr Europe’ being held in Germany that year. However his determination to compete and succeed forced him to risk all and go AWOL. Naturally he took the top prize and a big trophy but also picked up a week in solitary confinement for his troubles. It seemed there was no sacrifice to great for Arnold to achieve his goals.

Next he went on to win Mr Universe in London and following this his dreams led him to the US where he immediately came across much tougher competition and initially came up short. However it didn’t take him long to assess his weaknesses and devise ways to cut them out, in short he refocused.

“I was always honest about my weak points, this helped me grow. I think it’s the key to success in everything: be honest; know where you are weak: admit it.”

So his reality check allowed him to stay in control of his goals and to adjust his plans accordingly. Doing this stopped him from becoming to inward looking ad wandering off track.

“When I see that I have certain backward attitudes, I reason them out and work to make my outlook more realistic.”

Arnold also learned a lot through observing what other successful people do and what unsuccessful people do. This down to earth approach has often given him the edge on his rivals.

“Most of the people I observed couldn’t make astonishing advances because they never had faith in themselves. They had a hazy picture of what they wanted to look like someday, but they doubted they could realize it. Ultimately they didn’t put out the kind of effort I did because they didn’t feel they had a chance to make it. And of course, starting with that premise, they didn’t.”

Over the years Arnold had developed a winning mindset and mentality. He soon realized that this could be a applied to any area of life that he wished. In short he had developed a simple mind set for success.

In bodybuilding, there are big goals like winning Mr Olympia; there are medium-term goals such as attaining your ideal weight of 245 lbs with just 5% body fat; and there are lots of short term goals like: getting to the gym, eating enough protein, doing an extra rep for each exercise and so on.

Basically what Arnold did was to take this successful approach and apply it in exactly the same way as he did in bodybuilding to other areas of his life.

“In two or three years, I had actually been able to change my body entirely. That told me something. If I had been able to change my body that much, I could also, through the same discipline and determination, change anything else I wanted. I could change my habits, my whole outlook on life.”

Arnold was actually a millionaire way before he started his career in Hollywood and in learning about business, Arnold applied the bodybuilding-template to his studies. In exactly the same way he built up his acting career slowly but surely always with the end focus in mind.

Looking back at the achievements he has made during his life it is no surprise his philosophy on life is:

“The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer,”

I strongly suggest you take a note of the tremendous success of Arnold’s life and realize that it was down to himself and the way he has used positive thinking throughout his life to achieve his goals. He wasn’t born lucky, or with anymore chance to succeed than you or I. Follow his template for success and you can also live a very fulfilling life.

Three Things To Consider Before Heading Off On Your First Road Trip

No matter your age or your occupation, everyone can benefit from heading out into the outdoors and getting some fresh air from time to time. Road trips are an ideal way of exploring an area that you are not too familiar with and can also be perfect for people who want to revisit some specific attractions at a pace that suits them. Before getting buckled up for your first ever road trip however there are a few things that should be considered.

Travel Partners

One of the most important things that should be considered before heading off on your first road trip are your travel partners. Most road trips last for at least a couple of days and some can even last for months at a time, especially if exploring a whole country is your idea of fun. Unless you plan on traveling in separate vehicles you may find that you are spending anywhere up to 24 hours a day together so know it can try your patience if you don’t exactly get on with your travel partners.

Where possible it’s a good idea to travel with people who have a similar personality type. If you like your own space, traveling with a group of extroverts whose idea of fun is heading off on an extended party is probably not the best idea. Also think about traveling with people who can drive (and will be happy taking over the wheel for an hour or two) unless you are happy driving the party around on your own for days on end.

Places to Visit

Road trips are great in that it isn’t important for your plans to be set in stone. One thing that should be kept in mind however is your return date so if there are a few specific places that your group wants to visit it may be a good idea to plan the rest of your trip around these. Before traveling, invite your travel party out for a few cocktails (this is the best way to get your creative juices flowing) and see what you come up with. Don’t make the experience stressful, just try and get a general idea of what your trip will entail.

Your Budget

Road trips don’t have to centre around flashy hotels and top price attractions – if you are short on cash you can still have just as good a time, it may just mean sacrificing slightly when it comes to accommodation. Many people find camping is a great way of saving some money but guest houses and hostels can work just as well. When planning your road trip, remember to account for the cost of things like petrol and toll roads (some of which can be avoided altogether depending on where you are driving).

As you travel together you will get to know your travel partners even better than ever. This will either lead to a monumental success or a monumental fail so take the time to plan things together before even thinking about heading out into the world.

Female Jobs – Hindrances and a Road Map to Successful Integration

Female Jobs in the middle east (and historically in other regions of the world) have always been a sign of economic and social revolution. The introduction of the female human capital into the working job market, especially within emerging markets, usually dynamically and rapidly diversifies both the talent pool and the active industries within the market.

Driven more by passion rather than by practicality, the presence of active and enabled females in female jobs and positions, usually creates business opportunities and business development in different sectors of industry besides the traditional banking and manufacturing industries.

I don’t want to make this an argument about the differences or similarities between the sexes in their career capacities, especially since I don’t believe in applying broad generalizations to specific individual situations (such as strictly hiring women for public relations roles because they have better communication skills according to research). I believe that each job position, and each job role within the organization needs the best man or woman in it despite the gender, depending on who is most capable at this specific task, from the pool of candidates available.

My goal here however, is to shed some light on some of the hindrances facing female workers and female jobs in general in order to shift the focus on a procedural enablement and facilitation of job market development. Most of the information below comes from my personal insight, being a Saudi citizen, observing the hurdles faced by females in my family in their quest for an equal and comfortable career opportunity.

This can also be used as a template or a recipe for making a work environment female friendly. By avoiding each of the following hindrances, you can create a work environment that is fair, comfortable, and supportive to your female human resources which can reduce the overall tension in the workplace and open up the potential for synergistic behaviour.

1- Difficulty of acquisition

The first difficulty facing female workers is the difficulty of acquisition. It is difficult for companies that have never before hired women, to properly seek out, spread the word, attract, interview and hire female workers. It is also difficult for females to find any information about potential openings or female-ready companies. Usually we find that this kind of information travels virally through SMS, text messaging, and word of mouth. This makes it possible for people close to an in-group to find potential opportunities but it eliminates a whole wealth of candidates that do not socially intersect with the aforementioned social group.

Having a female focused job marketing channel, separate from traditional job listings, career development program marketing, and typical induction programs will help better reach the target audience, with a more relevant message.

The hiring manager should think of female workers as a niche, and engage that niche directly in the conversation to be able to reach them effectively to attract and hire them.

2- Unequal payscales

In unregulated industries, such as the private business sector, you will find female workers willing to in unattractive, laborious jobs, sometimes at lower pay than their male counterparts. The reason for this acceptance might be that they have less opportunities available for them, they might not be as interested in working for money, as they are interested in contributing to society and having something of value to spend their time in (especially if they are not the family’s primary earner), and they have a more pragmatic approach to work devoid from entitlement because they are still used to working their way for what they want as a symptom of social change.

The hiring manger should ensure that pay scales are fair and comparable between male and female workers so long as their job descriptions are the same. In the end the goal is to fill the vacancy with the BEST candidate, be it a guy or a girl, and so the definition, expectations, and rewards for doing that job should be the same, no matter who does it.

3- Logistics

A big problem faced by many female career women, is that in certain countries where it is difficult for them to work in the first place, it is equally as difficult, if not prohibited for them to drive our travel freely without proper escort. This means that women that are able to overcome the first two hurdles, and that have signed a contract for a job with an employer at a reasonable wage, may find difficulty in being able to show up to work, everyday, and on time, simply because they do not directly control their means of transportation and are at the mercy of another individual.

Two possible solutions that we see for this kind of problem are:

A- Carpooling: organically, groups of women from the organization arrange a carpool with with redundancy so that no matter what comes up, one of the group will always be able to source their driver, pick-up her co-workers, and have them all arrive to work on time.

B- In certain situations involving larger employers with a large population of female workers (such as larger factories or assembly lines) the employer may find it more effective and attractive to set-up a transport option, for example to drive the female workers from a meeting point down-town to the worksite, or the office head quarter.

Having the employer manage transportation is also attractive for jobs where the employees will typically need access to clients in the field, such as support jobs, sales trips, pre-sales presentations, and general marketing and promotion activities at trade shows, fairs, and mixers.

Another solution to the logistics of the situation is mentioned below.

4- Non flexible work hour arrangements

Research has shown time and time again, that employees that have more freedom and autonomy over their working hours (such as being required to put in 40 hours of work a week total, rather than being expected to be at the office exactly from 9 to 5 everyday) have higher productivity levels and higher job appreciation.

Although this case applies to all employees, male and female alike, it is notable that given additional concerns female employees have due to the logistics of arriving to work, and the limitations on having transport available to leave work, then an offset work schedule might be more in line with their travel arrangements. Furthermore, extra-carricular commitments such as children, nursing, schooling…etc may require certain hours of the work day where one of the working parents (be it the mother or the father) needs to leave work for a few hours.

Having a work day that is a hybrid of fixed hours (for example between 11:00am and 1:00pm) for meetings and collaborative work and autonomous hours (25 to 30 hours a week to be managed at the discretion of the employee himself/herself) improves productivity, job satisfaction, and creates more opportunity for female workers to enter the workforce with reduced conflict and hindrances.

5- Comfortable working environment and office facilities

A lot of times when we think about work, we think about office space, cubicles, computers, and all the equipment people need to do their work. More important than these items, are the equipment, spaces, and facilities that our workers need when they are taking time off from work. Having proper facilities, including a female lounge, female on-call rooms for female nurses and doctors, female specific bathrooms and female specific prayer rooms gives the women in the workplace everything that they need to have a complete, productive, and wholesome workday.

This problem is usually most prevalent just as a company decides to start hiring their first female employees. Suddenly, they are faced with decisions of weather to go for ‘unisex’ facilities by ignoring the needs of their female employees, and backing their decisions up with the justification that they don’t need to provide ‘duplicate’ facilities for a minority of their workforce, or investing in facilities that they know will be underutilized for a long time until their female workforce grows to become a significant portion of their population.

In this situation it pays to pre-empt these impromptu decisions, by facilitating the workplace BEFORE hiring your female employees as they deserve equal and comfortable working conditions as their male counterparts.

6- Praise and reward

In certain cultures, there is a high level of separation or segregation between male and female workers and males and females in the general public. This sometimes makes it difficult to present successful female workers with professional awards in public venues such as seminars and gatherings as the audience or promoters are pre-dominantly male. Sometimes a male representative is chosen to receive the award on behalf of his female colleague, other times, the award is cancelled altogether and re-directed to a less deserving male co-worker in order to avoid making any extra arrangements for the deserving employee to accept her award. This is not only ridiculous but also immoral, and eventually will not only create resentment from the female workforce but also destroy morale and reduce levels of motivation.

The equity theory of motivation tells us that misdirected benefits negatively affect both the recipient and the denied as not getting what you deserve and getting that which you don’t deserve are both in-equitable compensations which reduce employee trust in the corporation, reduce motivation and hamper productivity.

7- Power struggles

It is difficult, in general, for senior employees or established employees to work with or work under a younger employee, even if that employee were more specialized and capable on this specific task or project. Similarly, it is difficult for employees of different sexes, to work with our under employees of the opposite sex, even if that employee were more specialized and capable on this specific task or project.

If you think about it, a high flying female employee coming into a predominantly male workplace may face a lot of difficulties and opposition in getting any of her ideas or initiatives implemented. What is even worse, is that the existing male employees may activate a defensive male culture such as creating an environment that is highly masculine including topics that don’t interest women such as talking about sports or sharing pseudo sexual jokes, and other forms of communication that are specifically exclusive to the female workers to alienate them from the general group and diminish their power to activate, motivate and engage the group.

As a hiring manager or a senior person in your organization, it is your job to be aware that the very masculine and seemly harmless comradeship in the workplace may in fact be a form of in-group, out-group psychological play, and to try and diffuse these attitudes and create a level playing field where the best ideas and the best workers are given the opportunity to present and execute these initiatives for the benefit of the organization.

8- Typecasting

It is very important, create a level playing field where the best ideas and the best workers are given the opportunity to present and execute these initiatives for the benefit of the organization. One common mistake that contradicts this level playing field, is to typecast employees by saying things like ‘women are better at creative tasks, while men are better leaders’.

Saying these things and acting on them can be very damaging to the potential output of the organization as the right way to look at your human capital, is to look for the best EMPLOYEE for a specific task, regardless of the weather that employee is male or female.

Creativity can come from an artistic background, it can come from a deep understand of the problem or product, it can come from unrelated experience that happens to come back to us during a brain storming session, it can come from inspiration, and all of these sources are not in any way monopolized by one sex or the other.

Leadership can come from motivation, strong vision, great communication, facilitation of great progress by removing mental and physical barriers to success, enablement, group energization, and more, and all of these actions or concepts are not in any way monopolized by one sex or the other.

Always look to find the best candidate for the task, project or job and always make sure that your employees and their direct superiors are not pidgin-holing their female workers into low-tech roles, or keeping them out of leadership positions based on heresy that is unrelated to the specific candidate’s capabilities.

9- Reaching further for opportunities

Male employees in the organization have a lot of social leverage. Let elaborate on social leverage; many business decisions take place outside of the office during casual conversations between a manager and his close group of employees over lunch, during an informal outing at the ranch, or over drinks after hours. Female workers, although present and engaged in important decisions within the confines of the office, will not be available during these extra-office decisions due to the traditional segregation of the sexes during off hours.

As the saying goes ‘out of sight, out of mind’ and the conversation between the managers and their close group outside of the office organically leads to awards, benefits, promotions, and special projects being handed over to the guys, and away from the female workers simply because they are not there. This is not necessarily a malicious process, but rather an organic result of proximity.

This results in the commonly known fact that women in the workforce have to work harder and more diligently for their promotions and for advancement opportunities at work, compared to their male counterparts.

As a hiring manager or a leader in your organization, you should ensure that every qualified candidate is fairly considered for any promotions or vacancies, rather than simply going by the recommendations of your division or department managers. This ensures that no organic or malicious favouritism is taking place and that the most qualified people are the ones rising the ranks which gives great long term results both for the employee’s job satisfaction as well as the organization’s performance.

To summarize, hiring females in the workplace requires extra attention to equality, work dynamics, corporate culture, appropriation of benefits and achievements, and a certain degree of flexibility and understanding. In return, opening up your organization for female jobs increases the diversity of the workplace, improves dialogue, add different points of view and perspectives to the discussion, and takes advantage of the immense wealth of highly qualified female graduates that are eager to enter the work force and deliver value and a experience a sense of self worth through positive contribution to society.

Border Road Organization

Border Road Organization-Choose As a Career Option

Border Road Organization is a multifaceted, modern construction organization committed to meeting the strategic needs of the armed forces. The role Organization is to develop and maintain the operational road infrastructure in border areas and It also contributes to the socio-economic development of the border states.

It was raised in 1960 to carve roads through difficult Himalayas in North-Western and North-Eastern border areas of the country. Though for basic purpose it is a road constructing civil engineering organization – task function-wise similar to central and or state PWDs- yet in that of Corps of Engineers of the India Army.

It constructs and maintains roads in virgin areas where other civil engineering works- executing agencies are unable to operate. The officers, supervisors and men required for maintaining this Force are drawn partly from the Armed Forces, especially Corps of Engineers, and partly enrolled/enlisted from open market exclusively for this force. A few officers, especially doctors, are drawn from Indian Air Force and the Navy also.

The troops enrolled exclusively for manning functions of this organization are collectively known as General Reserve Engineer Force, or ‘GREF’. The personnel drawn from other defence forces are considered on normal military duty.

In other words while the phrase Border Roads Organization stands for the department as a whole, ‘GREF’ is the name of the collective body of the former’s whole-time regular employees, recruited, maintained and deployed, exclusively on execution of BRO’s projects/ works only. The technical head of the organization, located at New Delhi, named as Director General Border Roads, is a Lt. General from Corps of Engineers.

The Border Road Organization is a potential employer not only for technically qualified/ trained professionals but also for semi skilled and unskilled youths having aptitude for outdoor life.

Setup of Units

The lower most independent working unit in is called Road Construction Company, or ‘RCC’. Like a Division of the provincial PWD, an RCC is commanded by an officer of the rank of Executive Engineer or Major.

It comprises of functional platoons like ‘Formation Cutting Platoon’ for cutting new roads; ‘Permanent Works platoon’ for construction of culverts, retaining and breast walls, drains and parapets, etc; ‘Surfacing Platoon’ for keeping the finished roads in good repairs. These Platoons are Placed under the charge of a Platoons Officer of the rank of Assistant Executive Engineer or a Captain, who reports to the Officer Commanding RCC for all executives, administrative and financial matters.

A few RCCs make Border Roads Task Force, or ‘BRTF’, which is like a Circle of the provincial PWD or an Engineer Regiment of the Army. Earlier Task Force(s) an Engineer Regiment of the Army. Earlier Task(s) used to be commanding by a Superintending Engineer or a Colonel of Corps of Engrs. A few BRTFs put together form a BRO Project. A Project is commanded by a chief Engineer of GREF or a Brgadier of the Corps of Engrs.

To assist the RCCs and BRTFs produce optimum results, the organization, has certain common service units like ‘Engineer Stores supply & Transport Company’ or for procurement, storage, issuance and transport of construction stores; ‘Field Workshop’ or ‘Field Workshop Platoon’ for maintenance and repairs of the departmental vehicles and assorted hill cutting/road building/maintaining machinery and Base Depots’ for holding buffer stocks of stores and equipment.

The organization in addition holds ‘GREF Pioneer Companies, each having some 400 Pioneers, who are the organization’s foot soldiers. They handle all kinds of manual tasks, which otherwise can’t be got executed casual daily wagers.

Border Road Organization also borrows a complement of Army Pioneer who are authorized and also fire arms for security duties with movement of cash, sensitive documents and or VIPs. These common service units are manned by officers having expertise in specific fields. Non-technical administrative officers command the GREF pioneer companies, who form bulk of the force.

The Medical Staging Sections and Medical Inspection Rooms take care of the sick and suffering troops, while Dental officer and his team move from camp to camp for checking and improving the denture of the road building troops deployed in forward areas.

While every Border Road Organization project has one Signal Officer for manning the wireless communications network, a Postal Unit is there to look after movement of official daak as well as the private mail of the troops. Provost unit is one more setup in a Project for taking care of the internal as well as external security in the organization.

The GREF officers and men are simultaneously governed under two separate sets of rules. For the purpose of recruitment, leave, pay and allowances and retirement or discharge etc, they are governed under Central Civil Services Regulations.

For the purpose of discipline, however, they are / can also be simultaneously governed under the provision of Army Act, 1950, with certain essential modifications, specially dove-tailed for GREF.

The application of the Army Act entitles the GREF personnel, to a number of privileges like those entitled to the personnel of other wings of the Armed Forces.

Cadres of GREF officers

Many GREF officers are Civil Engineers, followed by the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers. Both these groups are constituted into Border Roads Engineering Services, or ‘BRES’. Next numerically lesser strong groups are GREF Administrative Officers and Medical Officers.

Categories of Tradesmen in Border Road Organization

The bulk of working strength of GREF comprises of the roads and buildings. They are Pioneers, Masons, Drillers, Dozer Operators, Compressor Drivers, Mechanics, Electricians, Carpenters, Mates, Leading Hands, Overseers, etc. The aforesaid road making troops are supported by clerks, nursing assistants, wireless operators, safaiwalas, cooks etc., who are responsible for running the administration in offices and camps.

Recruitment in Border Road Organization

The recruitment of GREF officers is conducted by Union Public Services Commission based on the head of the organization. The BRES officers are recruited by the Union Public Service Commission through an All India Engineering Services Examinations. Officers of the other cadres are recruited by the UPSC through interview only. In addition, a good number of officers rise from and out of organization’s serving lower ranks through departmental promotions.

The recruitment of various categories of GREF subordinates is done centrally by the Commandant, GREF Centre and Records, located at Pune in Maharashtra. While the advertising of the vacancies in officers cadres is done by UPSC through leading newspapers of the country, that for the subordinates is done by GREF Records by inserting advertisement in the newspapers.

Pay and Allowances in Border Road Organization.

In the matter of pay and allowances, while services officers and personnel retain their respective original terms and conditions of the defense service, the GREF troops are governed by Central Govt.’s scales of pay.

Employees Group Insurance Schemes, General Provident Fund, House Rent Allowance, allotment of Govt. Accommodation, gratuity etc. all are applicable to GREF nearly at par with other Central Govt employees. Rather the BRO’s field of work being in remote areas, the troops while deployed in those hard areas are entitled at a good number of places of work to remote locality allowance at variable rates according to the pay scale and the place of work.

Those posted to Anadamans & Nicobar and or North-Eastern Region, Ladakh etc. get an additional allowance.

In additional to above benefits of Central Govt. Services, the GREF personnel also enjoy free ration and Canteen facilities.

Promotional prospects

A direct entry AEE (Civil) can rise upto the post of Additional DGBR. An Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Officer who joins organization as Asstt. Executive Engineer can hope to rise up to the level of Chief Engineer. The Medical Officers can rise up to Deputy Chief Medical Officer (SG) and Administrative Officers to the post of Director (Adm). The subordinates having lesser promotional prospects get time bound higher pay scales.

For an industrious individual who has zeal for outdoor work, spirit of patriotism and craving to serve the mother land, who sees pride in belonging to a uniformed/disciplined setup, Border Roads Organization is the best choice for realizing ones cherished career dreams.
