How to Remove Stains on Carpet

Getting a stain on your carpeting can be disheartening, but you’ll be relieved to know that most stains can be removed by using the correct procedures and products. The sooner you treat a spill or accident, the better your chances that you will reduce damage and be able to successfully remove the stain. When you purchase new carpet, cleaning instructions are often included and you would be wise to file this information where you can easily refer to it as soon as a mishap occurs.

When a spill or accident happens, pick up solid matter immediately then use dry white paper towels or clean terry cloths to soak up the liquid. Blot the spill from the outside working in; don’t rub or scrub the stain, as this may inadvertently set the stain. After blotting it by hand, place a fresh towel on the stain and weight it down with a heavy object to remove as much liquid as possible.

Stain Removers

Commercial stain removers are available at your local supermarket, hardware or home improvement store. Check the label for your specific type of stain; some are specifically formulated for wine, coffee or pet stains. Certain household products can remove specific stains; for example, you can treat a red wine stain immediately after blotting with club soda to lift the stain from carpet fibers. Coffee and tea stains can be removed with dishwashing liquid; mix it in a small container with water and blot the stain, then rinse and blot dry. One part white vinegar mixed with two parts water can also be used to remove coffee, tea or food based stains.

Always test any stain remover or homemade remedy in an inconspicuous spot and examine the treated area for color changes or bleaching of the color. If you do not notice any adverse effects, carefully follow label directions for specific instructions on treating the stain, repeating as recommended until the stain is successfully removed.

Remedies for Tough Stains

Grease, ink, tar and blood stains are harder to remove and brake cleaner or dry cleaning solution may work better than store bought stain removers. Brake cleaner is designed to remove grease and chemical residue and dry cleaning solution is formulated to removed other tough stains. Apply a small amount of the either solution to a clean cloth and blot the stain. If your problem is pet stains and odors, your local pet supply store carries enzyme cleaners that can remove the stain and odor; however, you will have to treat the pad as well as the carpet.

Steam Cleaners and Vacuuming Products

A steam cleaner is a good appliance to have on hand, especially if you have children and/or pets. You’ll find hand held models and larger models similar to an upright vacuum cleaner. You can use them to clean stains as they happen and also for routine cleaning of your carpets and upholstery. A wet/dry shop vacuum is also handy for vacuuming up wet stains; once the liquid is removed you can follow up with a shop/vac to rinse the affected area and vacuum away remaining moisture. There are also several products on the market that can be applied and scrubbed into dry stains and vacuumed away; their effectiveness depends on the severity of the stain and how long it has been set in the carpet.

How to Remove Adhesive From Suede

There can be no doubt that adhesive tape was one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century, especially duct tape which can hold anything short of a 747 together. However, when you need to remove adhesive tape from your suede jacket or couch, it is certainly a “sticky” situation.

Step 1

Remove the adhesive slowly and carefully from the suede surface, using your fingertips to gently pull as much off as possible. In case you are a nail biter, you can use a spoon instead. After you have removed as much of the adhesive from the suede as possible, then use an artgum eraser – which is a white eraser – rub the surface to get rid of the remaining adhesive residue.

Step 2

Use an emery board to sand the surface lightly in the event there is a bit of adhesive stubbornly clinging to the suede. If you do not have an emery board, you can use a fine grade sandpaper (6/0 – 8/0). It is important to proceed slowly to avoid removing suede resulting in a “bald spot” on the surface of your cherished item. Also do not press too hard when using the sandpaper otherwise you could easily create a hole, which is far worse than adhesive.

Some brave hearts have tried and indicated they were able to remove the adhesive using the common petroleum based can oil spray used for squeaky doors. However, experts generally recommend against applying any chemicals to suede. Before attempting this on the impacted area, first try it on a hidden area to confirm it will not leave an unattractive stain or discolor the item. Spray it on a cloth and dab the suede with it. Allow it to dry for five to fifteen minutes or until the adhesive appears soften. Using a clean cloth, wipe off the oil, repeat to the entire area is cleaned up. It is suggested to use a circular motion when attempting to clean the surface with the multipurpose product.

Another tactic is to lay a cotton cloth on top of the affected area, then rub an iron over the cotton cloth only. This should melt the adhesive and the cotton will absorb it. Move the cotton to a new area needing removal.

Step 4

Brush the nap of your favorite suede item with a suede brush after you have removed the adhesive. It is important to remember that suede has what they call a natural imperfection surface.

Additional tips and suggestions

If your item is very expensive or too treasured, consider using a professional to tackle the project for you.

Now keep in mind the next time you attend a networking event or conference wearing your favorite suede jacket, if they offer you a stick on name tag – just say no!

How To Remove Common Stains From Bluestone Pavers

Even though the dense and hard characteristics of bluestone make it a very popular choice for interior and exterior paving projects alike, it is a stone that is prone to developing stains over time. This can have a very detrimental effect on the appearance of your stone, especially if the stains are left for long periods of time to fester and further ingrain themselves into the surface of the bluestone pavers. Use this guide to help you remove stains as soon as you see them.

Cleaning

You should always begin by giving your bluestone pavers a good clean – you never know when this simple method is actually going to succeed in removing that pesky stain. Use a neutral cleaner that has been specially made for use on natural stone (even better if it has been designed for bluestone), a special stone soap or a mild liquid detergent (the kind you use to wash the dishes). Add this to a bucket of warm water and use either a mop or a soft cloth to apply the solution to the pavers.

Stain Removal

If simple cleaning was ineffective in removing the stains your bluestone has developed, one of these methods should be able to do the trick.

  • Organic: These are pinkish-brown stains that are caused by coffee, fruit and leaves being left on the surface of the bluestone. On outside surfaces, simply remove the offending material and let the sun bleach the stain away. On inside surfaces, use a solution made up of water, a few drops of ammonia and some 12 percent hydrogen peroxide to remove the stain.
  • Oil: These stains often appear greasy and are caused by cooking oils and greasy foods being left on the surface of the bluestone. Use a liquid cleaner, such as dishwashing liquid, mixed with water to remove.
  • Ink: These stains can be removed on lighter bluestone using bleach or hydrogen peroxide. For darker stone, use a lacquer thinner or acetone to remove the marks.
  • Biological: These stains are caused by mildew or algae growth; you will need to kill the bacteria in the bluestone to effectively remove it. Use half a cup of ammonia, bleach or hydrogen peroxide that has been diluted in water (only use one and never mix these chemicals).
  • Metallic: These stains are caused by rusted furniture leaking into the bluestone below and are very difficult to remove. You may need to mix together a poultice to leach the stain out.

Regardless of the dense and hard nature of bluestone, it can still be stained if it is not handled or maintained correctly. If you notice that your stone has developed stains as a result of a spill or weathering, try using one of the above techniques to remove it and restore your bluestone to its former glory.

A Natural Non-Invasive Method to Remove Unwanted Tattoos

The removal of a tattoo has been tried using clay, calcium bentonite clay to be precise. Calcium bentonite clay is natural occurring ‘earth’ found in a limited number of locations around the world. The use of calcium bentonite clay has been known for its ‘detox’ abilities by many indigenous populations around the world. It is only recently been gaining popularity in the modern world.

Calcium bentonite clay has natural negative charged ionic molecules whereas most substances, including tattoo ink, have positive charged ionic molecules. The clay literally attracts positive charged ink and holds it (adsorption) as well as drawing the ink molecules inside the clay molecules (absorption). This amazing double bout process works with astonishing efficacy.

To apply the clay couldn’t be simpler…

  1. Create some hydrated clay either by mixing 1 part clay powder with 3 parts water (preferably filtered) or using clay mask straight from its tub.
  2. Spread a layer of hydrated clay over the tattoo to be removed. Leave the clay to harden and do its job of absorbing (and adsorbing) the tattoo ink. One hour should be long enough, unless the clay hasn’t hardened.
  3. Then wash off the dry clay but do not rub or brush the area, just wash by lightly sweeping you hand over the area and dry softly with a towel.
  4. Repeat this for at least four times a day, with the last time left overnight. Don’t add anything else to the mixture or anything else to the treatment, like a bandage wrap for instance. The hardened clay will fall off but it should be easily cleaned up with a vacuum cleaner.
  5. Depending upon the tattoo this daily routine should be repeated for three months. Over that time after the clay absorbs (and adsorbs) the ink out of your skin, the tattoo should fade then disappear. If the tattoo hasn’t disappeared, then stop the treatment for a month and then undertake another three month cycle of treatments.
  6. The colors, size and age of the tattoo in addition to your skin type will all have a bearing on the rate at which the tattoo disappears. A multicolored tattoo will take longer to disappear than a black-ink only tattoo. Also the color green is the most difficult to remove.

This method is never as immediate as laser removal procedures but this is a simple and in-expensive approach that can be done in the comfort and privacy of your own home without visiting the laser treatment clinic.

Remember this treatment is not the same as applying abrasive exfoliation creams. Tattoo removal creams break down the pigments in the skin (both inked and natural). Clay is supporting the skin by attracting the tattoo ink to the surface and on to (and into) the clay. Effectively your own skin is doing the work in a natural less oppressive manner.

Try it, what have you got to lose – apart from the tattoo?

When and How to Remove 3M Carbon Fiber

When you first install 3M carbon fiber, you may not think about ever removing it but eventually you may want to try a new pattern or the vinyl may become damaged making it necessary to repair. 3M Di-noc vinyl is guaranteed for ten years when it’s used on areas inside but for vehicles and other items used outside, the guarantee is for five years.

3M carbon fiber has a grooved adhesive design that, when applied properly, helps to remove air bubbles for a professional look but it also reduces the risk of the vinyl lifting and peeling after installation. This design allows the vinyl to cling tightly to the surface area but you can still remove it without a lot of hassles when the need arises.

Removing the carbon fiber is just as important as installing it because you don’t want to cause any damage to the surface area. When the time comes to remove the vinyl, there are certain techniques that can make the process go smoothly without damaging the surface underneath.

How to Remove the 3M Carbon Fiber Vinyl

When removing carbon fiber vinyl you must work carefully to prevent damaging the vehicle or object underneath the vinyl. When working with large areas, it’s easier to cut the vinyl before trying to remove it. This will make the material easier to work with and peel off. Use a sharp razor knife to cut into the vinyl but do not put a lot of pressure on the knife. You only need to crease the vinyl making a shallow cut. If you press too hard, it will go through the vinyl and damage the object underneath.

Using heat to warm the surface of the area will also make it easier to peel off the vinyl. You can do this by using a heat gun or a hair dryer but you don’t want to overheat the area. The idea is to warm up the 3M Di-noc carbon fiber so it will be more flexible and to loosen up the adhesive so it will peel without ripping and tearing. If you overheat it, this will make it harder to work with because it will be too soft and won’t peel off as easily.

Clean the Area

Once you have removed all of the 3M carbon fiber vinyl, you’ll need to clean any adhesive residue off the surface. 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner is a product designed especially for cleaning this type of adhesive and it won’t damage the paint when cleaning. After you have removed all of the adhesive, wash the area with a mild soap and water or wipe down the area with a damp cloth if washing is not an option.

If you plan to reapply the vinyl, give the area time to dry completely before reapplying. 3M carbon fiber provides you with many ways to make your vehicle and other items stand out and show off your unique personality. Since you can easily remove and reapply the vinyl whenever you want to, it’s a practical and economic way to express your individuality.

How to Remove a Mole – The 5 Most Unusual Remedies

If you’re looking at that unsightly mole and wondering if there is a way to remove it without spending a fortune on expensive medication or having to resort to surgery, then relax there may be a cheaper alternative, several in fact.

So if this has now got you thinking; how to remove moles without the hefty price tag and if you are open to some of the more unusual methods, then I will share with you 5 great tips on how to remove moles in the comfort of your own home.

1. Extract of Milkweed Herb

This is a very effective herbal remedy for removing moles. Simply apply the herb extract to the mole and leave it on overnight. If you continue to perform this routine every night for a whole week the mole will disappear not long after this.

2. Grapefruit

Squeeze the grapefruit to extract its juices and apply the juice to the mole. If you do this several times throughout the day for about a month your mole should start to disappear. Although you may have to invest in quite a few grapefruits this is still cheaper than your average over-the-counter mole removal creams.

3. Walnuts

This is quite a strange method for how to remove a mole, but believe me it is quite an effective one! The walnut has to be nice and ripe and still in its shell. Using a sharp utensil; cut the outer shell of the walnut so that the “walnut juice” oozes out. Rub the walnut juice onto the mole, if you have sensitive skin at this point you may experience a tingling sensation or even a darkening of the skin where the liquid has been rubbed. This is quite normal and is also an indication that the walnut juices are doing their stuff and that the removal process is well underway! This colour change in your skin is not permanent and your skin will return to its normal colour within a couple of hours. Repeat this process using fresh walnuts until the mole falls off.

4. Honey

Honey has been known for hundreds of years to have many healing properties, and now you can slap it on your moles too! Apply the honey to the mole several times throughout the day. You will notice that after only a few applications the mole will completely disappear. However, you may want to do this on a day when you aren’t planning on leaving the house as the process of applying honey to your moles can be a bit sticky!

5. Children’s Chalk

This is another rather strange remedy for removing moles, but if you have some of your children’s white chalk lying around then you might as well give it a go! It does have to be white chalk and it must be applied regularly. The chalk will lighten the growth at first and then eventually remove it altogether.

Remove Old Cabinets That Were Built In Place Using Nails

Periodically, we will have to remove an older set of kitchen or vanity cabinets that were fastened together and installed using nails rather than screws. If this is the case with your remodeling project, you WILL NOT be able to save the cupboards to be installed somewhere else. When you are finished taking them out, there will only be a pile of parts and pieces.

Take a flashlight and search inside your cupboards. If you do not see any screws, then this method of removing cupboards is for you.

Tools Needed:

  • Hammer
  • Small Single Handed Sledge Hammer
  • Pry-bar
  • Gloves
  • Safety Goggles
  • Razor Knife
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • Jig Saw
  • Skill Saw
  • Assorted Screw Drivers

Steps for Removing Old Cabinets

  1. Shut off the water supply to the sink faucet and the power supply to the range, dishwasher, hood vent or space-saver microwave.
  2. Remove the sink and all of the appliances. You may need another person to help with the sink. Most older homes have cast iron sinks and they are super heavy. I’m not joking here, DO NOT try to take a cast iron sink out alone.
  3. IMPORTANT: While you are trying to remove cabinets, be careful NOT to pry against the walls too hard. Most likely, they are made out of drywall or plaster board and are somewhat fragile. Try and remember to just pull things away from the walls-rather than prying against them.
  4. Cut all of the caulk lines everywhere that they are adjoined to the cupboards and counters against the walls, floors or ceilings.
  5. Put on your safety glasses and cut large sections of the Formica countertop, oversize base cabinet bottoms, face-frames and toe sections into smaller pieces. You can do the same with the upper cabinet bottoms that are large as well. Do this with whatever saw you feel the most comfortable using.
  6. If the backsplashes are only three quarters of an inch thick (3/4″), they are glued to the wall with liquid nail. Insert your putty knife between the wall and splash, then drive it downward using the force of your hammer. Continue to do this in several places until it comes loose from the wall.
  7. If the splashes are thicker than three quarters of an inch (3/4″), the chances are really good that they are attached to the countertop. There is no need to wedge the putty knife behind if they are attached to the top.
  8. With your gloves and safety glass on, you can begin the removal process by hammering the countertop in an upward position. Once it has begun to loosen, you can use the pry-bar to lift it higher. I can almost hear the squeaking sound of the nails already! Eventually, you should reach the point where you can grab it with both hands and pull it off of the cabinet.
  9. Take all of the drawers out from their respective locations.
  10. Using your hammer and sledge hammer, dismantle all of the cabinetry parts. Start by banging on a finished ends, then the face-frames, next pry on the bottoms and lastly the backs. The cabinets should remove rather quickly if you follow that pattern. Any time a cabinet part is difficult to remove, cut it into a smaller piece. Most of these old kitchens were manufactured using pine and plywood. They also were glued together with carpenters glue. This can make them stubborn to get apart sometimes.

You should always be on the lookout for roaches. Who knows, if your lucky, you may find an old newspaper article from the late 1950s. I retired when I discovered an old safe that had a million dollars stashed underneath the toe base of a kitchen cabinet in Hollywood. I think the home originally belonged to Jed Clampet of the Beverly Hillbillies. Having a little fun during the project is a good thing!

The trick to making all of this easier is to cut as many parts into smaller pieces before you start ripping them out. This will make it easier for the trash man or for you when carrying the parts out of the house and throwing them in your trash containers.

Anytime you remove old kitchen cupboards, be prepared to find things that need to be replaced or repaired. It’s not uncommon for there to be water damaged areas where mold has been growing. Sometimes places where leaks were years ago are found on the ceilings. Outside the cost of your new cabinets, have a little extra set aside for unexpected repairs.

How Do You Remove Window Tint Using Newspaper and Soap?

Removing tint on your windows has never been this easy. All you need to do is have a newspaper, a cleaning sponge and a pale of soap and water. Here are some easy steps on how to remove window tint using newspaper and soap only. Start by making a mixture of soap and water which you will be using. Next, use your household cleaning sponge to apply it to your window. Make sure that all the surface area of the window will be covered with soap and water.

Once all areas of the window have been soaked with soap and water, you can now then apply the newspaper on your window. Make sure it fits right in your window and all the tinted areas of the window are directly touching the newspaper you placed. It doesn’t matter if the newspaper is old or new as long as it is a newspaper that you can use.

Leave the newspaper in place for approximately one hour. If you see the newspaper sliding off your window, reapply the soap and water mixture to the newspaper to make it stick even more to the tinted window. You can do this every 10-15 minutes to ensure that the newspaper is making contact with the tint films.

After an hour or so, try to scrape the newspaper together with your window tint film. If the tint does not come off with the newspaper, carefully reapply the newspaper using the mixture of soap and water and leave for another hour.

Make sure that the newspaper is wet every 10-15 minutes. Try to remove the newspaper again after the allotted time. You should be able to remove it together with the tint this time.

If you can’t peel the tint using your hands, you can use a razor or a squeegee in removing the newspaper and tint. It would be better to use a rubber squeegee than a razor since it can damage your window. Do all of the steps above until you are done with all the windows.

It would be better for you to use this method of tint removal during a cloudy day since the newspaper will tend to stay wet for a longer period of time which is preferable to loosen the adhesive used in applying the tint. If you don’t want to do the removal process by yourself and have some money to spare, then hire a window tinting service since they can also remove tints at an additional price.

Top Ways To Remove Rust From Wood Decks

More often than not, wooden decks are exposed to many forms of elements that could lead to weathering and damage. Constant sun exposure makes the wood crack while harsh cold weather promotes bacterial growth. Water and mist contribute to the oxidation of nails and screws that held the woods in place.

When these things happen, the luster of wood decks disappears and is only replaced by unsightly orange tinge of rust as well as molds and cracks. But there is something that can be done to restore stained wood decks. Here are simple ways that you can use as reference to clean up your wooden decks.

  1. Sodium percarbonate
  2. Sodium percarbonate is a colorless, hygroscopic, crystalline oxidizing agent. It is commonly used in making environmentally friendly laundry detergents. When sodium percarbonate is mixed with water, it releases soda ash and hydrogen peroxide. These two components are known safe and effective cleaning agents. Given all that, sodium percarbonate is a safe way to remove rust stains from wood decks.

    • To use, just mix one part of sodium percarbonate with one part of water. For a much stronger solution, just add more sodium percarbonate.
    • Dip and soak the stiff nylon brush into the solution then use it to scrub the stained deck. Do this until all rust stains are completely removed.
  3. White vinegar
  4. White vinegar is mostly preferred in removing rust stains. Cider apple vinegar can also be used for this purpose. White vinegar is more effective when undiluted. But since vinegar is acidic, it is advised to not smear areas that are not stained with rust, lest your unaffected wood deck would whiten.

    • To remove rust stain, soak a clean cloth or sponge with white vinegar then use it to wipe the rust stains off the wood deck.
    • Wipe the area immediately with a dry clean cloth.
  5. Borax and lemon
  6. Borax or baking soda is a common ingredient in many household cleaning products.

    • Mix one part of Borax with a squeeze of lemon juice.
    • Dip a stiff nylon brush or sponge into the solution and scrub the stained wood deck with it.
    • Once rust stains are gone, rinse off the treated area with water and wipe to dry.

If in case, all these are not effective enough to remove very stubborn rust stains from wood deck, you can consider using commercial rust removing products. But do this only when all your safe options are completely exhausted.
