4 Common Grandparenting Mistakes You Should Avoid

Very much like being a parent, being a grandparent is a tough but very rewarding role. If you’ve recently had a grandchild, it would be natural to expect that your child (the new parent) may turn to you for plenty of help, advice and support. They do need you to be there, but don’t be disappointed when they don’t show as much enthusiasm as you would expect. Remember, being a new parent takes a lot of easing into.

To keep family relationships stronger than ever, here are 5 common grandparenting mistakes you should avoid:

Interfering with how your kids raise their children

Times have changed and so has parenting styles. Try not to judge the small and big decisions that your child makes when it comes to their own child. Even if you don’t agree on something, don’t impose your opinion on the new parents. You can lightly make a suggestion, but otherwise, just be supportive and offer compliments on their efforts. Remember, your job is to be a grandparent, not a parent.

Forgetting the word NO

People say that the difference between being a grandparent and a parent is what they do for the grandchild is a choice, not an obligation. The new parents will need all the help they can get, especially during the first few months. You can offer your time when you’re free, but learn to say no – don’t feel like you are obligated to spend all your time with them. The same goes with your gifts and finances.

Being competitive

Both sets of grandparents will surely be excited upon the arrival of the new addition to the family; and many become competitive thinking “I’m the better grandma” or “the baby likes me more than her other grandpa”. Avoid this type of thinking – it will only result to our children feeling alienated and your grandchild feeling uncomfortable. Just think that the more caring and loving adults there are in the child’s life, the more he/she will grow up to be good.

Disregarding parents’ rules

After a few years, your grandchild will start visiting you at home more often and even start spending nights there. You may have different rules in your home when it comes to kids, but never disregard their parent’s rules at home. If they’re not allowed sweets after 7 at home, don’t give them any at yours and making it a secret for you to seem cool. Respect their home rules.

Avoid these common grandparenting mistakes for a continious harmonious family relationship!

What is the Total Unfunded Liability of the US Government?

One of the top political topics of 2009 was the health care reform plan which is still being worked on by Congress. Because of the vociferous debate about the plan, US citizens have probably become much more knowledgeable about the amount of debt that the US government owes. A great deal of that debt is held by countries such as China and that fact too has captured the public’s attention.

But, there is another type of debt that isn’t talked about as frequently. I am referring to what is called unfunded liabilities. In essence, the US government has made promises to pay monies today and in the future to it’s citizens. We are talking about Social Security and Medicare.

The government raises funds for these expenditures from various taxes and then uses the money to fund the program. These programs are considered unfunded liabilities because, projecting out in the future, the revenues from the taxes will not be able to fund the projected expenditures. The numbers are actually quite staggering. The Social Security unfunded liability is projected to be 17.5 trillion dollars.

The Medicare unfunded liability is actually projected to be much higher. Medicare actually has parts A, B, and D, Part A funds hospital care. Part B funds Medical visits, and part D funds prescription drugs. The part A unfunded liability is estimated at 36 trillion dollars, part B at 37 trillion dollars, and part D at 15 trillion dollars.

The total amount of the unfunded liability comes out to just over 100 trillion dollars, or approximately $33, 000 for every man, woman, and child in the country. And since the private net worth of all Americans together is estimated at just over $50 trillion dollars by the Federal Reserve, you can see the problem.

The reason that many are concerned is that the only 2 ways to rectify the situation is either to markedly raise taxes or cut the promised benefits. Since, most analysts feel that it is politically very difficult to cut promised benefits, most foresee significant tax raises in the future. There are some analysts who are much more sanguine about the problem arguing that there are so many assumptions built into these analyses that they could be significantly inaccurate.

Piriformis Syndrome – Self Diagnosis

“Oh No!” It’s the acute or chronic feeling of pain, hot or cold, numbness, weakness, “electric shocks,” or strange sensations, starting near your buttocks and going down your leg. You’ve got sciatica, and all you know is that it can be excruciating. Sciatica may originate in your brain, your back, or where you sit, stemming from nerve problems in the back or entrapped nerves in the pelvis or buttocks. What causes the pain is just as varied and potentially confusing. The trouble is often due to a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome–a commonly misdiagnosed compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. Here we are going to tell you how to self-diagnose whether you have piriformis syndrome.

If you are wondering if you have piriformis syndrome you can do a lot to diagnose yourself at home. First, is the pain worse when you are sitting down? Do you have pain, numbness, and/or weakness in the buttocks, down the back of the leg, or both? Without such pain and discomfort, you can rule out piriformis syndrome. Next, if you press on the muscle in each buttock, just above the middle of the cheek, and you have pain on one side or both sides, that is another indication that you have piriformis syndrome. Sometimes you can feel the muscle in spasm there. If you don’t feel any pain, tenderness, or discomfort with this pressure, chances are you don’t have the problem, though there are a few exceptions to this rule. Third is the classic “straight leg raise test”. To do this, you will need someone to help you out. First, you lie flat on your back on a hard surface. Next, the person helping you, will raise your legs one at a time. As this is being done, you must let this person know at what point you feel pain and at what angle you feel it. If the angle is between 30 and 60 degrees and the pain is in the back, it often indicates irritation of nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. Bending the knee while the leg is still raised should relieve the pain. If this does not relieve the pain then the problem is probably in the hip. If the pain is in the back of your knee and occurs at the same angle for both legs, you may have nothing more serious than tight hamstrings. If, however piriformis syndrome is present, this test should cause more pain on the side that is most affected.

Next we will explain how to perform the FAIR test at home. A simple form of this test, without an EMG machine was created by a Norwegian surgeon named Solheim and is commonly referred to as the Solheim Test. First, lie on your side on the floor, with the painful side up. Next, bring the knee of the leg on that side down to the floor, without turning over and without facing downward. A friend can do that part and the next. Now press ypur knee downward and move the ankle upward, more or less using the leg as a crank to turn the hip joint counterclockwise(to the left)and clockwise(to the right). If you feel pain you may well have Piriformis Syndrome.

There is also a test called the Paces Test, which also requires the help of a friend. Assume the same position as at the start of the Solheim Test. Raise your bent leg. Your friend should now try earnestly but not too vigorously to keep it down Once your leg is up in the air, hold it there. If you are weaker on one side than the other, that is another indication that you may be suffering from Piriformis Syndrome. If you experience any severe abnormalities while performing these tests, you may want to go see your doctor for the full version of the Fair Test with an EMG machine.

A conventional X-ray will not show piriformis syndrome, nor will any standard MRI or EMG. However, the spasm of the piriformis muscle can affect the sciatic nerve and can damage or even sever some of its fibers, and an EMG can pick up that damage.

The various types of exertion that could have caused piriformis syndrome in the first place can also make it worse, or make it begin again if it has eased up. Running on a treadmill is an example of this, as is walking up steep stairs or a hill, or heavy lifting for a long period of time.

Most of the time, people who have piriformis syndrome have it on one side, then get it on the other side as well. The pressure of the abnormally large or stiff piriformis muscle pulls the sciatic nerve taut. The recommended physical therapy for Piriformis Syndrome is two or three times per week for one to three months. We sincerely hope that this has made it easier to tell whether you have this sydrome before you spend a lot of money and time on worthless doctor visits that may not tell you any more than these simple tests will tell you. And we hope that this will help you to tell the difference between sciatica pain and the discomfort and Piriformis Syndrome.

Why Having a Crowdfunding PR Media Strategy Is Important for Crowdfunding Success

Crowdfunding PR and Why it Matters for Campaigns.

Crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo have collectively raised over $1 billion dollar for project makers. Each year hundreds of thousands of crowdfunding campaign projects go live. So what does this mean for founders? Increased competition for attention and more noise than ever to try and break through.

Founders, artists, and entrepreneurs are increasingly using crowdfunding as a way to raise capital and the industry is expected to surpass traditional angel and VC models of raising money for startups and companies in the very near future.

Every day there’s several hundred new tech enabled product, film, clothing line, or design project going live. You’ve spent the past year or longer working on your project, prototyping your idea, and bringing your product to life. The moment of launch has arrived, how do you break through?

“Valiant entrepreneur / startup creates brand new product against all odds with innovative tech set to take on the world… “

Your story is probably a similar one worth telling and it’s worth doing right. It is important to nail down the true story of what it is your selling, what you’ve created, and why it matters and needs to exist in the world. Think about your favorite brands and companies in the world, there’s something special about each of them that creates brand loyalty and separates them from their competitors.

There are 5 true and proven ways to promote a crowdfunding project, gain backers, and become a success story:

  • Friends / Family / Personal Contacts
  • Building up a Mailing List in Advance of Launch
  • Social Media Advertising
  • Public Relations / Crowdfunding PR Campaign
  • Organic Traffic from the Crowdfunding Platform

The fist three should are strategies that usually work in advance of the campaign. Once a campaign launches you can hope to become a trending project on Kickstarter or Indiegogo to rank higher on their page and score organic traffic that way.

You can also pump money in to Facebook Advertising and hope to drive traffic that way. However Facebook Advertising isn’t always the most cost effective way to market your project. One the Cost Per Click (CPC) can often get expensive and many times we hear of campaigns who aren’t seeing a solid return of investment on social media advertising.

That leaves a Crowdfunding PR Campaign as your greatest chance to get the word out your project.

Every successful crowdfunding campaign has a few things in common. But the overriding feature that all of these have is media exposure. Getting picked up by media and blogs is the true secret to success on platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Major media outlets are always looking to share the latest projects and there are dedicated communities out there that are dying to hear about your project whether it’s a 3D Printer, a Drone, or an EDC (Everyday Carry) product.

The great thing about utilizing a crowdfunding PR (including Kickstarter PR and Indiegogo PR) strategy is that this works out to be the most cost effective way to spread the word and cast a large net about your project. A single feature on a major outlet can drive serious traffic and pledges to your campaign page. From a promotional standpoint you won’t get better value anywhere.

Notice the major campaigns with all the major media logos posted on their campaign page? A crowdfunding media strategy can provide serious legitimacy to your project and show the rest of the world that this is one project they don’t want to miss.

How To Teach Your Dog Not To Jump Up On Visitors

There are two approaches you can take to this very common problem.

Either will work. One is more work than the other. And some people say one is more gentle and humane than the other.

You will need to choose one technique and consistently apply it.

(1) Use your knee

This is the one that even non-dog owners know about.

The dog comes up to you, quivering with excitement. He rears up to place his paws on your stomach or chest. You turn sideways just before he is able to put his paws on you, and raise your knee so he meets a hard, pointed-but-blunt object. After hanging on that for a second or two he drops to the ground. You win.

There are a couple of extra things you can do at this point.

You can teach him that he gets a pleasant reception when his four feet are on the ground, by squatting down next to him when he has dropped off your knee and giving him a lot of attention and fuss.

And if he gets his paws on your before you can raise your knee, then do everything you can to appear uninterested. Don’t reward your dog in any way. (and that means not pushing him away with your hands, as this is an enjoyable game for any dog. Don’t talk to him. Ignore him. make what he wants to be a game, a definite non-event.

OK. that’s the knee in the chest. But there’s an alternative.

(2) Use your hands

When the dog jumps up, this second technique has you catching hold of his legs with both hands — and standing there. His jump has suddenly got ‘frozen’. Nothing is happening. There was no reaction. Instead, he’s been caught and can’t do anything!

Keep him like that. Hold on to him and don’t move. Draw this out. Make it linger for as long as you can. Talk to him if you want to, but hold him up.

Most dogs, after some time, will start to slobber on your hands. This is your signal — drop him. Hard. Don’t lower him to the ground, but rather, let him go abruptly.

Then, when he’s down on the ground squat down there with him and give him the encouraging, enjoyable time he was hoping for by jumping up a few moments earlier.

This way he learns that the best reaction from you is always when he’s on his four legs!

How Do the Consequences of Bankruptcy Alternatives Compare?

Let’s talk about avoiding bankruptcy and what you can expect will happen in each situation. Some options are more favorable than others and once you have explored all of your options for getting out of debt, you may find bankruptcy to be your best fit after all.

1. Make More Money

This is a no brainer actually. When you’re looking to get out of debt and avoid bankruptcy, the best thing you can do is make more money. I know, it’s easier said than done, but have you really explored creative out-of-the-box ways to raise your monthly income? Here are some of my suggestions that have helped past clients:

  • Rent a room to create rental income;
  • Get a second job;
  • Ask for a raise at your current job;
  • Put the kids to work and if the are working, STOP PAYING THEIR EXPENSES;
  • Have a yard sale, or sell items you no longer use on Craigslist;
  • Start a side business repairing or repurposing items for resale

2. Cut Expenses

There are only two sides to the budget ledger; income and expenses. Another best strategy is to not only increase your income, but cut expenses too. Any money left over can then go to paying off debts and avoiding bankruptcy. Here are some often overlooked ways to cut expenses:

  • Transportation: Cut transportation expenses by taking public transportation to work. You would be surprised to notice your stress will go down with public transportation. If you plan to drive, be sure your car is well-maintained and paid off. Maybe you need to downsize and get a cheaper car that is paid for to cut out the car payments.
  • Insurance: Home and auto insurance costs can be cut by examining the amount and type of insurance policies you have. If your car is older, consider cutting out any physical damage coverage (comprehensive/collision) and maintain liability only. Liability limits on insurance policies only need be enough to protect your assets. So, if your car and home have no equity, then you don’t need a high limit insurance policy. Also, shop around for insurance.
  • Utilities: Turn off the lights and air conditioning. Cut that cell phone bill, or cut the land line. Call each company to reduce services that will reduce your bills, or cut them completely.
  • Groceries: Take up couponing only where it makes sense by buying your shampoo, soap, toothpaste, dish and laundry items on coupon. Paper products are another great household item to buy on coupon. Cut your grocery bill by planning your weekly meals before shopping and consider other meals that you can use similar ingredients for. Cooking at home can not only save money because it’s cheaper than dining out, it can also help you live healthier.

The consequences of tightening the budget by increasing income and reducing expenses are that it’s a long-term lifestyle commitment that could take longer than five (5) years to pay off all your debts. Even after maximizing this strategy and applying all your disposable income toward debt, it may not be enough and you may still be faced with bankruptcy. However, I still believe that knowing your numbers is an important step in financial transformation and eliminating debt no matter which direction taken.

3. Debt Settlement

If you’re behind on paying credit cards, they can be negotiated; sometimes for pennies on the dollar. This can seem like a money saving strategy, but can leave your credit score in shambles in the wake. First, you’ll need a hefty savings account so that when you strike a deal, you can pay a lump sum to settle the debt. Be sure to get any settlement in writing and ask them to remove the trade line from your credit report. You may not get credit clean-up, but it doesn’t hurt to ask either. This can be an effective debt elimination method if you only have one or two debts to work with. Any more than that and a bankruptcy case would be a cheaper, better, faster way to get out of multiple debts at once.

The consequences of debt settlement are that not only will you be repaying the debt, your credit may remain negatively affected as a result.

How Power Amplifiers Create Magnificent Sound Effects

An amplifier is used in devices wherever sound is produced such as radio, TV and music systems. The significance of an amplifier is that it helps in the proper functioning of all audio devices. An amplifier is a device that enhances the sound quality and provides better music experience.

These are the ones which can convert low power frequency signals to higher frequency signals. Their categorization is based upon the amount of power delivered to the load. Classification of an amplifier is done based on linearity, signal gain, efficiency and output power.

They find their use mostly in transmission chains and, hence require attention for power efficiency. According to the latest survey, power amplifiers are often used in audio and radio frequency applications in various industries which include medical and military industry. There are ranges or classes of power amplifiers.

There are many different types of amplifiers which can be purchased in the market –

• Tube amplifiers – Also called as vacuum tube amplifiers as they make use of the vacuum tubes to increase the signal amplitude and power.

• Solid state – These are the ones used mostly in transistors. These came into existence in the late 60s and early 70s. These can easily control all the bass frequencies than tube amplifiers.

• Circuit types – It depends on the circuit types; they are classified into Class A, Class B, Class AB, and Class D.

• Audio-power amplifiers – These are also known as the small signal power amplifiers as they raise power level of signals with audio-frequency range up to 20 Hz- 20 kHz.

• Radio-power amplifiers – These are also called large signal power amplifiers which also raise the power level of signals. It easily amplifies specific frequency or narrow band of frequencies.

This is often used to produce loud sound and also make it very clear to show the difference in acoustics between a noise signal and soothing sound.

As power is an important factor in such amplifiers the amount of power needed can be categorized based on the rule of thumb:

• Medium Bands: 3 to 4W per audience member.

• Large Bands: 5 to 6W per audience member.

While stepping up into the market the main thing that comes to our mind is the budget as more the power, the greater the cost of it. If budget is a constraint and if less powered amplifier is purchased it must be kept in mind that there is not any clipping. The other factor is the product specifications i.e. power that flows into the loudspeakers is less than the required it should be make sure that it should not damage the loudspeaker or the system, and create an unpleasant hearing due to the distortion.

These find a major role in bringing in the best possible sound effects and hence are in demand.

Lose Those Bingo Wings

Don’t you hate the term “bingo wings”? It can be a major embarrassment to those that have fat arms so here are some useful tips to help you get rid of those flabby arms forever. In order to lose bingo wings you need to do 2 things right: eat the right diet, and do the correct workout. Today we are going to focus on the workout.

There are basically 2 sets of muscle groups in the arms which you should look to work on. The triceps muscles are at the back of your arm and do not get used that much so they have a tendency to sag. The biceps are the muscles at the front of your arm which you will see if you tense your muscles when you bend your arm at the elbow. Focusing on toning the triceps will help you lose the bingo wings and gain strength in the arms.

Keeping an eye on what you eat is necessary to help in the process. Everyone knows that we are what we eat, but it is just that people are willing to do little or nothing about it. If you are generally overweight, reduce calorie intake, eat a diet that is low in fat and carry out regular cardiovascular exercise. Yes, you will lose fat off your arms although where you lose it from initially, is largely dictated by your genetic makeup. It takes discipline and motivation to lose bingo wings but it does not take very long. Your flabby arms are a result of your bad habits, and being overweight is what causes all of your arm fat.

Let’s take a look at some of the arm muscle exercises you can try

The first is called the side arm raise. Standing up straight (keeping your back straight) take a weight in each hand and raise your arms to shoulder level keeping your arms outstretched at all times. Hold it for 10 seconds and then move your arms back down to waist level. As your arms get fitter a stronger you should start to find it easier and notice some results. Try to keep the intensity high and increase the amount of repetitions that you do as you get stronger. Another good triceps exercise is similar to the side arm raise but instead of raising your arms to the side you extend the arms outwards to shoulder height. Keeping the arms straight rotate so that the palms face towards you then away from you in continuous movement. Again you should try to keep the intensity high and increase the amount of time you do it for as you get stronger (start with 30 seconds).

Arm curls are an effective way of toning the biceps. Standing up straight take a weight in each hand and hold your arms by your sides. Slowly bend your arms up so that your hands are by your shoulders. Then slowly straighten your arms back to where they were and repeat. You should try and increase the amount of repetitions you do and keep repeating until you cannot do another rep.

Mental Health – Mind-Body Wellness

DOES MENTAL HEALTH AFFECTS PHYSICAL HEALTH?

The effect of positive or negative emotions is so powerful, it changes lives. It is widely documented that a person’s emotional health influences medical outcomes and can lead to depression or happiness.

Research shows that one function of the human brain is to produce substances that effect emotional and physical health. One such substance is endorphins /en·dor·phins/ (en-dor´fins) which play a vital role in the body’s ability to heal itself. These studies shows that laughter can reduce stress, decrease pain, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system because laughter increased endorphins which increase immune function and make you more resistant to disease.

Do you ever wonder why you feel better after a good laugh, a long run, having sex or any strenuous workout? It’s because of the endorphins released in your body which gives an elated feeling that sometimes last up to 14 hours depending on the individual.

WHAT ARE ENDORPHINS?

As a healthcare provider and educator, I have taught that “endorphin is one of a group of opiate-like peptides produced naturally by the body in the brain at neural synapses. At various points in the central nervous system pathways they modulate the transmission of pain perceptions”. The term endorphin was derived at by combining the words endogenous and morphine”. Endorphins produces a morphine effect raise the pain threshold, produce sedation and euphoria. This effect can be blocked by naloxone which is a narcotic antagonist medication.

Endorphins may also regulate the release of growth hormones from the pituitary gland and are released when you, for example, cut you finger or burn your hand. Initially you feel severe pain but it soon disappeared due to the release of endorphins that kills the pain.

HOW TO RAISE ENDORPHIN LEVELS?

I see sickness all around. Most of it could be prevented with more attention to health habits, thoughts, emotions, nutrition and actions. How do you respond to stress in your life? Any prolonged strenuous exercises such as swimming, walking, bike riding, cross-country skiing, tennis, having sex will raise endorphin levels; “the happy juice”. UV light increase endorphins but even with the risk of getting skin cancer, people still sun bathe. People will continue to be out in the sun because it leads to that “euphoric feeling” and people like feeling good. Laughter is good medicine for the soul, raises endorphins levels. Keep laughing!

CONCLUSION: It’s time to start taking big steps towards creating that balanced life you want. Just as endorphins increased your happiness and outlook on life, positive attitude and thoughts increased your mental health. Set big financial goals, start a successful home based business so you can make the money needed for a healthy financial future. Eat healthy foods with the right portions to prevent weight gain and obesity. Exercise frequently to reduce stress, increase circulation, maintain desirable body weight and have a believe system – prayer works! Remember your mind or body is a terrible thing to waste.

Prostate Cancer Detection: What You Should Know

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a substance made by cells in the prostate gland (both normal cells and cancer cells). PSA is mainly found in semen, however a percentage is also discovered in the blood.

Two tests are frequently used to screen for prostate cancer

  1. Digital rectal exam (DRE): A doctor or nurse inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to estimate the size of the prostate and feel for lumps or other abnormalities.
  2. Prostate particular antigen (PSA) test: Measures the level of PSA in the blood. PSA is a substance made by the prostate. The levels of PSA in the blood can be higher in men who have prostate cancer. The PSA level may likewise rise in other conditions that affect the prostate.

When prostate cancer establishes, the PSA level usually goes above 4. Still, a level below 4 does not ensure that a man does not have cancer. About 15% of men with a PSA below 4 will have prostate cancer on a biopsy.

Men with a PSA level between 4 and 10 have about a 1 in 4 chance of having prostate cancer. If the PSA is more than 10, the opportunity of having prostate cancer is over 50%.

If your PSA level is high, your doctor might recommend either waiting a while and duplicating the test, or getting a prostate biopsy to discover if you have cancer. When thinking about whether to do a prostate biopsy to search for cancer, not all doctors use the exact same PSA cutoff point. Some may encourage it if the PSA is 4 or greater, while others may recommend it starting at a lower level, such as 2.5 or 3. Other factors, such as your age, race, and family history, might impact this choice.

Elements that might impact PSA levels

A variety of aspects aside from prostate cancer can likewise raise PSA levels:

  • A bigger prostate: Conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous augmentation of the prostate that impacts lots of men as they get older, can raise PSA levels.
  • Older age: PSA levels usually go up slowly as you get older, even if you have no prostate problem.
  • Prostatitis: This term describes infection or inflammation of the prostate gland, which can raise PSA levels.
  • Ejaculation: This can make the PSA go up for a brief time, and then go down once again. This is why some doctors recommend that men avoid ejaculation for a day or more prior to testing.
  • Riding a bicycle: Some research studies have actually recommended that biking might raise PSA levels (perhaps because the seat puts pressure on the prostate), although not all studies have actually found this.
  • Particular urologic treatments: Some treatments done in a doctor’s workplace that impact the prostate, such as a prostate biopsy or cystoscopy, can lead to greater PSA levels for a short time. Some studies have actually suggested that a digital rectal examination (DRE) might raise PSA levels somewhat, although other studies have actually not discovered this. Still, if both a PSA test and a DRE are being done during a doctor check out, some physicians advise having actually the blood drawn for the PSA before having the DRE, just in case.
  • Certain medications: Taking male hormonal agents like testosterone (or other medicines that raise testosterone levels) may cause an increase in PSA.

Special types of PSA tests

Some doctors might think about using different types of PSA tests (gone over below) to help choose if you need a prostate biopsy, however not all doctors settle on how to use these other PSA tests. If your PSA test outcome isn’t really normal, ask your doctor to discuss your cancer risk and your requirement for more tests.

Percent-free PSA: PSA takes place in 2 significant forms in the blood. One kind is attached to blood proteins, while the other distributes free (unattached). The percent-free PSA (fPSA) is the ratio of how much PSA circulates totally free compared to the overall PSA level. The portion of complimentary PSA is lower in men who have prostate cancer than in men who do not.

This test is often used to assist decide if you must have a prostate biopsy if your PSA results are in the borderline range (like between 4 and 10). A lower percent-free PSA indicates that your chance of having prostate cancer is greater and you ought to probably have a biopsy.

Numerous doctors recommend biopsies for men whose percent-free PSA is 10% or less, and recommend that men think about a biopsy if it is in between 10% and 25%. Using these cutoffs detects most cancers and assists some men avoid unnecessary prostate biopsies. This test is widely used, however not all medical professionals agree that 25% is the best cutoff point to decide on a biopsy, and the cutoff may change depending upon the overall PSA level.

Complexed PSA: This test directly measures the amount of PSA that is attached to other proteins (the part of PSA that is not “complimentary”). This test might be done instead of examining the total and totally free PSA, and it could offer the very same quantity of info as the other tests done independently. This test is being studied to see if it offers the exact same level of precision.

Tests that integrate different types of PSA: Some newer tests, such as the prostate health index (phi) and the 4Kscore test, integrate the outcomes of various types of PSA to obtain a total score that reflects the opportunity a man has prostate cancer. These tests may be useful in men with a slightly raised PSA, to help determine if they ought to have a prostate biopsy. Some tests might be used to help identify if a man who has already had a prostate biopsy that didn’t find cancer ought to have another biopsy.

PSA speed: The PSA velocity is not a different test. It is a step of how quick the PSA increases in time. Normally, PSA levels increase slowly with age. Some research has actually found that these levels go up much faster if a man has cancer, but research studies have actually disappointed that the PSA velocity is more helpful than the PSA level itself in finding prostate cancer. For this reason, the ACS guidelines do not recommend using the PSA speed as part of screening for prostate cancer.

PSA density: PSA levels are higher in men with bigger prostate glands. The PSA density (PSAD) is often used for men with big prostate glands to attempt to change for this. The doctor measures the volume (size) of the prostate gland with transrectal ultrasound (talked about in If Prostate Cancer Screening Test Results Aren’t Normal) and divides the PSA number by the prostate volume. A higher PSA density suggests a greater likelihood of cancer. PSA density has actually not been revealed to be as beneficial as the percent-free PSA test.

Age-specific PSA ranges: PSA levels are normally higher in older men than in younger men, even when there is no cancer. A PSA result within the borderline variety might be very worrisome in a 50-year-old man but cause less concern in an 80-year-old man. For this reason, some doctors have actually recommended comparing PSA results with arise from other men of the very same age.

However due to the fact that the effectiveness of age-specific PSA ranges is not well proven, many medical professionals and professional companies (as well as the makers of the PSA tests) do not advise their use at this time.
