The great thing about keeping in shape as a pitcher all you need are dumbbells or resistance bands. In this pitchers workout program, we will be focusing on the shoulders, rotator cuff, wrists and legs. Again these are very simple but effective ways to improve your game.

Lets start with the shoulders and rotator cuff, start by using a lighter weight. There is no need to injure yourself while lifting weights, later on you can up your weight, but never strain yourself. Stand straight up with your arms at your side, palms should be facing away from your body, in a smooth motion pinch your shoulder blades and lift your arms to shoulder height, your thumbs should be up, hold and then return slowly to the beginning position. When doing this workout you should look like the letter “t”. Do it again and again until you start feeling the burn. Sit on a chair or a ball so your legs are bent at a 90-degree angle and your feet are flat on the floor. One of the most important steps you can take when developing your exercise regimen is to set SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Start with process goals instead of outcome goals. You are probably more familiar with outcome goals, which focus on specific accomplishments. To be sure, outcome goals are very important. When they are written using the SMART criteria, they can give you a helpful target. However, it has been my experience that when people fail to achieve their outcome goals (which is common because many of us set unattainable goals), they become demoralized and give up on their exercise regimen. Process goals focus more on the implementation of your exercise program. For example, a good process goal would be “to exercise 4 times this week for at least 30 minutes per workout.” You have more control over accomplishing this goal and it will help you get in the habit of exercising. Some additional examples of effective process goals include the following:

* Walk 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

* Find an exercise partner in the next 3 weeks.

* Buy an exercise journal and record my workouts on a daily basis.

* Run a total of 15 miles a week for the next 4 weeks.

* Get my old bike fixed and ride it twice a week for the next two months.

* Ride my bike 40 miles a week for the next 4 weeks.

* Swim 3 days a week for 30 minutes each workout.

* Measure my daily caloric intake and record it in my exercise journal for 14 days.

* Complete a fitness assessment in the next 30 days.

Process goals like these provide a very effective means for starting a training program. I’m not suggesting you avoid outcome goals. They serve an important role and can be very useful, especially for experienced exercisers and competitive athletes. I merely suggest you incorporate several process goals as well.

The Federal Flood Insurance Program, referred to as the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a total disaster, pun intended of course, you know me. How bad has it gotten? Well, they are redrawing flood maps to help get more premiums to pay for their costs, costs which are out of line simply because FEMA is so wasteful, politically correct, and inefficient, even if it is one of the more efficient agencies of our Federal Government. Yes, let’s talk about all this shall we?

The GAO (Government Accounting Office) put out an interesting report on September 18, 2013 titled; “National Flood Insurance Program: Continued Attention Needed to Address Challenges,” GAO-13-858T, which was quite telling, it stated in the introduction amongst other things that the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has been on the “high risk list” since 2006, and it owes well over $24 Billion to the US Treasury, not including the devastating Boulder Colorado flood in the Summer of 2013. The report then stated;

“NFIP’s financial condition highlights structural weaknesses in how the program has been funded–primarily its rate structure. The annual amount that NFIP collects in both full-risk and subsidized premiums is generally not enough to cover its operating costs, claim payments, and principal and interest payments for the debt owed to Treasury, especially in years of catastrophic flooding, such as 2005.”

In 2005 they are speaking of Katrina, Rita and several Hurricane storm surge hits and the flooding from the Lake Ponchartrain levee breaches. Also included in the current deficit and bankrupt fund is money allotted for political reasons during the Obama re-election campaign in October/November of 2012, Super Storm Sally, I mean Sandy-Pants, where the US taxpayer took it in the shorts and big government paid out anyone with a sniffle or wet shoes.

Another interesting testimony was given by FEMA Director to the US Senate sub-committee, you can also read about this statement; “Written testimony of FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate for a Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Subcommittee on Economic Policy hearing titled “Implementation of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012: One Year After Enactment” which appeared in the online archives on September 18, 2013.

Why is all this happening? Because the government thought that it could solve all its problems by selling insurance where private markets didn’t dare due to risk. The government in its infinite wisdom and bureaucracy thought it could manage the program better and more profitable. Since that has never to my knowledge happened in government whether we are talking about Amtrak, US Postal Service, or ObamaCare, one has to ask why anyone is surprised this isn’t working. Worse now, the bankrupt FEMA, and NFIP wants to soak those who are not at risk with higher forced premiums to pay for their shortfalls. Ouch.

Yes, ouch, like the US middle class consumer home owner can take anymore. Now they have the DHS, yes, the Department of Homeland Security calling it a national security issue, convenient, meaning they’ll have the power to enforce their authority onto anyone and in this case perhaps everyone they choose. Please consider all this and think on it.

A multisensory teaching approach means helping a child to learn through more than one of the senses at a time. According to the International Dyslexia Association: The Principles of Instruction are;

1. Simultaneous Multisensory which means that teaching is done using all learning pathways in the brain (visual, auditory, kinesthetic/tactile).

2. Systematic and Cumulative which means Multisensory language instruction requires that the organization of material follows the logical order of the brain. Each step must also be based on those already learned.

3. Direct Instruction: The learning of any concept cannot be taken for granted. Multisensory language instruction requires the direct teaching of all concepts with continuous student-teacher interaction.

4. Diagnostic Teaching means that the teacher must be adept at individualized teaching. The teaching plan is based on the careful and continuous assessment of the child’s needs. The content presented must be mastered to the degree of automaticity.

5. Synthetic and Analytic Instruction: Multisensory, structured language programs include both synthetic and analytic instruction. Synthetic instruction presents the parts of the language and then teaches how the parts work together to form a whole. Analytic instruction presents the whole and teaches how this can be broken down into its parts.

1. Phonology and phonological awareness. Phonology is the study of sounds and how they work together. Phonological awareness is the understanding of the linguistic structure of words. 2. Sound Symbol association. This is the knowledge of the various sounds in the English language and their correspondence to the letters and combinations of letters which represent those sounds. Sound-symbol association must be taught in two directions: visual and auditory and auditory to visual. Students must also learn the blending of sounds and letters into words as well as the segmenting of whole words into the individual sounds.

3. Syllable instruction. A syllable is a unit of oral or written language with one vowel sound. Instruction must include teaching of the six basic syllable types in the English language: closed, vowel-consonant-e, open, consonant-le,r-controlled, and diphthong.

4. Morphology is the study of how morphemes are combined from words. The curriculum must include the study of base words, roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

5. Syntax is the set of principles that dictate the sequence and function of words in a sentence in order to convey meaning. This includes grammar, sentence variation and the mechanics of language.

6. Semantics is that aspect of language concerned with meaning. The curriculum must include instruction in the comprehension of written language.
