Hiking Boots – Cleaning, Care, And Maintenance Of Your Most Important Piece Of Hiking Equipment

Good quality hiking boots are an investment that can be expected to last a long time, but only if you take care of them. This article will tell you how to take proper care of your hiking boots, from breaking them in to having them resoled, so you will get the most value for your investment.

In this article, I will discuss five main points of proper care and maintenance of your hiking boots:

1. Breaking them in.

2. Waterproofing.

3. Cleaning and general maintenance.

4. Resoling.

5. Knowing when they’ve had it.

Breaking In your Hiking Boots

The purpose of breaking in your hiking boots is to soften them so they will not hurt your feet. They must be made flexible at exactly the places where your feet and ankles bend. The best way to do this is to walk in them. The goal of breaking in your hiking boots is to do it in short walks, so you don’t find yourself in the middle of the wilderness with blisters and an inflexible pair of hiking boots.

Hiking shoes or day-hiking boots might not need any break-in, but try it just to be sure. Very heavy hiking boots might not actually break in, but wearing them will make your feet grow tougher in the places where the boots refuse to bend.

In either case, what you want to do is to wear your new hiking boots for short periods of time. Wear them around the house, on your morning walk, on your way to work and back (or wear them at work, if your job does not require a lot of walking and if dress codes permit). Wear them on short hikes.

Once the boots are properly broken in, they will feel comfortable as you walk. Then you’re ready to take them on a serious hike.

You may have heard of leaving your new hiking boots out in the weather, or soaking them and wearing them as they dry out, or other drastic and exotic techniques for breaking them in. If it seems like a bad idea, that’s because it is. Break them in gently, and they will last much longer.

Waterproofing your Hiking Boots

Most hiking boots are already waterproof when you buy them, but you still have to do some additional waterproofing. Check the manufacturer’s recommendation, either in documentation that came with the boots or on their Web site.

Different materials require different kinds of waterproofing. Leather, whether full grain or split, requires a wax-based waterproofing compound (which is exactly what shoe polish is). Fabric, especially nylon blends, requires silicone-based waterproofing spray.

Since most hiking boots are made of a combination of leather and fabric, you will have to use both types of waterproofing. And be careful, because the silicone-based sprays can be harmful to the glued seams of leather hiking boots. The best approach for such dual-material hiking boots is to spray the silicone-based waterproofing on the fabric panels while shielding the leather, then spray the wax-based waterproofing on the leather panels and the seams.

If you have full grain leather hiking boots, you can either use a wax-based waterproofing spray or old-fashioned shoe polish. Shoe polish works best on the seams, as you can put it on extra thick and work it into the seams and stitching.

Before you first use them, and after each major hike, clean your boots thoroughly and give them a full waterproofing treatment. Hiking shoes, worn infrequently, might need the waterproofing treatment just once a year or so, but use your judgment. If you see new scuff or wear marks after a hike, reapply the waterproofing.

Cleaning and General Maintenance of your Hiking Boots

Clean off the mud and dust from your hiking boots after each day of hiking. Each time you stop for a major break on a hike, check your boots and remove any excess mud or dust. To clean your boots while hiking or camping, just kick against a rock, bang your boots together, or scrape with a stick if necessary.

If you let the mud dry on your boots, it will both leach out the waterproofing and soak into the boot. This slowly destroys leather, and it’s not good for nylon, either.

Once you get home, or at least every few days on a protracted backpacking trek, wipe your boots with a damp cloth. Be sure to get off all the foreign matter, so there is nothing to interfere with the waterproofing chemicals, and so you can inspect them for damage.

If a seam is coming undone, cut off any dangling threads. If the dangling thread catches on something, the seam will simply come undone that much faster. Depending on the extent of the damage and the cost of the boots, you might want to bring them to a cobbler for repairs, or simply apply extra shoe polish to hold the loose ends in place and to ensure that the seam is waterproof.

If your boots have gotten soaked, dry them out slowly. Rapid drying will make the leather parts shrink and pull away from the fabric parts and from the rubber sole. Pack the damp boots full of wadded newspapers, and replace the newspapers every few hours until the boots are dry.

In between hikes, a pair of shoe trees will help your boots to hold their shape. And this will be very important to your comfort on your next hike.

Resoling your Hiking Boots

If you have a good pair of backpacking boots, you can have the soles replaced when they wear out. This will cost anywhere from $40.00 to $80.00.

Hiking shoes or day-hiking boots are not worth resoling. Generally, the uppers will wear out as fast as the soles, but even if the uppers appear to be in good shape, the cost just doesn’t make sense.

Look for an experienced cobbler in your town to resole your boots. There are services on the Web that will do this, too, but the shipping costs add considerably to the overall cost. The main benefit is that all such services guarantee their work. If you don’t know a cobbler you can trust with your precious hiking boots, search for “boot resole” on the Web.

After your hiking boots have been resoled, they will be like a new pair. That means you must break them in again.

Knowing When your Hiking Boots are Worn Out

Inspect your hiking boots for wear, and recognize when it’s time to replace them or, if they are worth it, to invest in major repairs.

The most obvious wear point is the tread. Sometimes the tread will be visibly worn, such that the cracks between the knobs of the tread are not deep enough to provide traction. On some hiking boots, you will discover that there are two layers within the sole, and after the softer portion wears through, you are walking on a harder inner portion that does not provide good traction on hard rock.

Another common wear point is the inside of the scree collar (the padding around the top that keeps pebbles out without chafing your Achilles tendon). If the lining has worn through and the foam padding has been exposed, your hiking boots must be repaired or replaced promptly.

Check the lining of the sole of your hiking boots. Very often, you will find a hole wearing through under your heel or toe. (Removable insoles can prevent this, but be sure to replace the insoles regularly.) Such a hole will soon begin causing blisters.

In some hiking boots, the uppers will begin to wear at the seams. You may find that the seams are coming apart very rapidly, as friction between the panels makes the fabric weaker, allowing even more movement and more friction.

Hiking shoes and day-hiking boots may fail by the sole separating from the uppers. If this happens before the shoes have begun showing other serious signs of wear, take it as a lesson: Avoid that brand in the future. If it happens in conjunction with other failures, well, it’s just time for a new pair of hiking boots.

If your hiking boots contain both leather and fabric, you may find that the leather has slowly stretched from the constant tension of the laces. The fabric will begin to wrinkle as the leather stretches away from it. Once this begins, seam failure will soon follow.

Another problem with stretching leather is that your hiking boots may reach a point where you can no longer tighten them! I have only seen this once, on a pair of split leather day-hiking boots. (Hated to see them go.)

Full-grain leather, properly cared for, is almost indestructible. If not properly cared for, it will crack. There’s not much you can do but replace the boots, and try to take better care of the next pair.

Conclusion

Take care of your hiking boots, and they’ll take care of you. Keep them clean, waterproof them with the manufacturer’s recommended waterproofing compound, and they will serve you for thousands of miles on the trail.

Data Security – Having Piece of Mind

Data security is a very important part of a successful computer involved business. It is essential to keep vital data secured in order to have piece of mind. Backing up data and having dedicated computers running just to store data are great ways to maintain data security.

Computer systems are subject to failures or accidents. Such failures and accidents affect the availability of data. Many businesses depend on their data for per second decision-making, and cannot afford a downtime of 5 or 10 minutes, which might result into losses of millions.

Another problem with data security is malicious computer viruses. The ideal data security for any business would be to have separate computers that constantly get updated with new back ups, but are never connected to any internet network.

For any business that could simply not afford to have its vital data be wiped clean from the face of the earth, backing up in other parts of the world can be a great way to avoid things like theft, natural disasters and human error. As long as you have absolutely topnotch network security, your data will be safe on a server in a different part of the world.

If you happen to wipe a hard disk clean, there are ways to recover that lost data. Many times damaged hard drives can be recovered, many times they cant, and often data recovery costs massive amounts of money.

How a hard drive works is a complicated process, but if you know that when you delete data off a hard drive, it doesn’t disappear, its still there, but it is ready to be written over. If you make a boob, delete something, as long as you don’t go filling up those same disk sectors you can probably retrieve that data. Mind you, this process is not easy, and a regular computer chump probably couldn’t do it, this is why data recovery is often left to professionals, and often costs you big bucks.

As you can see, data security is vital for the smooth operation of any business. If you practice good data security then you don’t ever need to worry about data recovery.

Think Green and Save Money: Techniques for Using and Reusing Non-Sticky Wash Away Stabilizers

One of my favorite reuse tricks for non-sticky, fabric-like wash away or water soluble stabilizer (WSS) is to trim strips from the edges of a used piece of stabilizer and then baste them together to form a rectangle, the same as with a cut away. After cutting the stabilizer from the back of an embroidered design, trim a wide strip from each of the four (4) sides of the leftover piece. A rotary cutter and ruler are helpful for this. This effectively trims off the uneven edges surrounding the central hole. When a bunch of these strips are collected, overlap the edges slightly and sew them together, both lengthwise and sometimes crosswise, depending on the strips’ relative lengths, using a 4-5mm basting stitch with water soluble thread in the needle and bobbin. Once a piece is a large enough rectangle to fit the embroidery hoop, this patchwork of stabilizer can be reused, although this new piece is not as secure as a solid piece, and should be used on lighter applications or layered with nylon organza for Embroidered Decoupage techniques.

Another trick with WSS is to dissolve scraps in water with a bit of rubbing alcohol to make a liquid stabilizer that can then be painted on a fabric to be embroidered. Any leftover is best kept refrigerated in a covered glass jar, or it may mold. This works for all the different types of WSS, either the fabric-like or the plastic-like.

For serger overlocker and heirloom sewing enthusiasts, the fabric-like form of water soluble stabilizer is handy cut into strips. Once you have removed the WSS from your embroidery, cut roughly 2-inch wide strips parallel to the edges of the leftover WSS. These strips can be used on a serger to create a blanket stitch, or on a conventional machine to back decorative stitches or support edge stitches that may go off the edge of the fabric.

Small pieces of the plastic-like WSS can be used over again as toppers for other embroideries. Pieces that are too small even for this can be held together a couple of different ways to make a larger, more useful piece.

One simple way is to dampen the edges of the scraps slightly to make them tacky, but not enough to dissolve them, and then overlap these edges with the edges of other scraps, sticking them together. Allow them to dry before sewing or embroidering on the new created sheet.

A second useful technique for making larger, thicker, and more durable pieces of the plastic-like WSS is to press the smaller pieces together with an iron. Place a plain piece of paper, such as copy paper, parchment paper, or brown paper bag, on your ironing surface. Arrange your overlapping pieces of WSS on top of this piece, and cover with another plain piece of paper. You can also use an appliqué or Teflon sheet, but paper is sufficient. Press the pieces together with an iron set on low. When cool, use as you would a regular sheet of WSS.

Outside of the Bible, What Is the Most Important Piece of Christian Literature Printed Today?

In my position with the Witt Company, I communicate with church professionals every day. Recently, many of you have stated that the size of your congregations have been “holding steady” while some have said, “we are getting a little smaller” so I started doing some research. I wanted to find some valuable information to help you build your congregations. I was fortunate to discover a book written by Yvon Prehn and called her. She is based here in Southern California. Yvon was very gracious with her time and she granted her permission to share some terrific information with you that I am presenting below. In the coming weeks, I will share more of her wisdom designed to help church professionals in various ways. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

First, let me ask a question: Outside of the Bible, what is the most important piece of Christian Literature printed today? One answer may surprise you; it could be your church bulletin!

Yvon Prehn wrote in her manual Toolkit For Church Communicators (excerpts reprinted with permission) that the church bulletin is, for some people, the first piece of Christian literature they have ever seen and is usually the first thing a new visitor will read about your church.

New Visitors Come Hungry

Yvon goes on to say that everyone has a spiritual vacuum inside and they come to church looking for a way to fill it. They will read anything that you give them.

Does Your Church Bulletin Present the Right Message?

What does your church bulletin say to them? George Barna says that 91% of “unchurched” people believe churches are not sensitive to their needs. Yvon wondered where they got that idea? Could it be you tell them that in your church bulletins? Many times, bulletins are filled with terms only familiar to regular visitors. They talk about events and meetings without explaining them, just assuming everyone knows what you are talking about. Sometimes, they don’t even talk about what is going on in your service that morning.

What Should You Put in Your Church Bulletins?

Producers of the bulletin should look at it through the eyes of someone unfamiliar with how a church operates. As you seek new members and try to connect with them, Yvon suggests some tips to keep your bulletin up to date but not to lose your church’s personality or traditional values.

Welcome People

Few bulletins start out with a WELCOME! It should be right up front and before the order of service. Make in genuine and “reflect the tradition of your church.”

Please Give an Order of Service

A visitor has no idea what to expect.

Acknowledge Both Visitors and Members in the Announcement Section

Some of the best bulletins welcome visitors and then give essential details such as bathroom locations, nursery info, even an invitation to have coffee after the service where they can meet and ask questions. In a section such as “church news,” accommodate visitors by saying something like: “Below are the various events hosted by our church in the coming weeks. Everyone is invited to these functions and we hope you will attend. If you need more information, please call the contact numbers listed with each activity.”

Do You Encourage New Visitors to Become More Involved?

Your bulletins should pull back first time attendees by suggesting that they attend a small group or social activity, even an event for their children.

Don’t List Events That Are Closed to Newcomers

Let regular visitors and members know about “closed events” in a verbal announcement and at the start of your small groups attended by active attendees. If you must list closed events, label them as such.

Include the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, why

Who is putting on the program? What is going on? Where will it be located? What time will it start and end? What is the cost? Is child care provided?

Repeat the Information (Event) for Several Weeks

Remember, no one will see the information as often as you do. Because of school and work obligations, many regular attendees cannot attend every week. Repetition is important. Marketing experts tell us that people need to see something 6 times before they remember and respond.

Have a Place for Testimonials and Always Include a Gospel Presentation

Yvon has been recommending for years that every bulletin put in a short piece about how someone came to trust Jesus as their Savior. Here is one that ran at Christmas:

“In the midst of the gifts and goodies we are all enjoying at this time of year, remember the message of Christmas is that God came to Earth in the form of a person-Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus grew up and not only became the greatest teacher and miracle worker the world has ever seen but he died a unique death. In His death, Jesus was not a victim of evil men. Jesus willingly gave up His life and died on the cross so that He could pay the penalty for our sins. His death was His choice and His story does not end with His death. Jesus rose from the dead after three days and by doing that, showed that He was God!

When you believe that Jesus died for our sins and accept the forgiveness He offers us, and decide to follow Him, Jesus promises to forgive us and give us eternal life. If you would like to have your sins forgiven, if you would like to be at peace with your God; if you would like to live forever, tell Jesus you are a sinner and you need His salvation. Ask him to come into your life and be your Savior and Lord. After you do that, please read the Bible to learn how to live as a Christian. Talk to God daily in prayer. Go to church and get to know other followers of Jesus and grow in your faith.”

A lady decided to include a brief gospel presentation like this in her bulletin and reported to Yvon that one of the men in her church had to go to prison for a time. To keep him in touch with the church, she sent him the bulletin regularly. He wrote her later and thanked her and said it made him feel that he wasn’t forgotten and he had even led several inmates to the Lord in prison. By including a gospel message, the eternal destinies of men were changed by her bulletins.

I was moved by Yvon Prehn’s inclusion of testimonials and her good ideas to build a strong, user-friendly, church bulletin that I hope will help you build your congregations.

Chess Pieces and the Rules of Movement

Chess pieces can have different values and capabilities. Every chess set is made up of a certain number of chess pieces, which usually consist of one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and 8 pawns. A player can obtain extra bishops, knights, rooks, or queens by having one of their pawns reach the opponent’s side of the chess board. One of the players has chess pieces that are all white and the other player has chess pieces that are all black, so the sides are referred to as black and white.

In the game of chess, the word “piece” can have three unique meanings. The first meaning that it can have is just any one of the actual chess pieces in the chess set, including all of the pawns. The second meaning that “piece” can have is any of the chess pieces except for pawn, so usually to refer to either the rook, bishop, queen, knight, or occasionally the king. The last meaning is that in some contexts the word will only refer to either a bishop or a knight.

Each chess piece is allowed to move a certain number of pieces in a specific way. The rook can move as many empty squares as it wants, but is restricted to moving only along a row or a column. The rook also has a role in the process of castling. The bishop can also move as many empty squares as it wants, but is restricted to moving diagonally. This means that the bishop will remain on the same colored square for the entire chess game.

The queen is the most mobile chess piece in a chess game and she is allowed to move as many empty squares as she wants and she is not restricted to any direction, being allowed to move diagonally and along both columns and rows. The king is only allowed to move one empty square, but he is not restricted to any direction. The king is also the piece that becomes protected in the castling process.

A knight moves uniquely only in the shape of an “L” by moving two spaces in either a column or row and then one space in a perpendicular direction. The pawn, which is only more mobile than the king, is limited to moving one square forward or if it is leaving from its position that it started the chess game in, it has the option to move two spaces forward. It can move forward only in a straight line. A pawn may capture another piece by moving diagonally one square forward into the square that an opponent’s piece occupies. If a pawn piece reaches the last row on your opponent’s side of the chess board, it can change into a bishop, rook, knight, or queen.

Becoming intimately knowledgeable about the capabilities and limitations of each of your pieces will greatly enhance your chances of success in your chess games. In addition, if you know the power of each chess piece, your games will be more challenging and enjoyable.
