Sports Betting – NFL Picks Against the Spread

Avid fans of the National Football League, or ‘NFL’, have probably come across what you call NFL Picks Against the Spread. In simple betting parlance, this means you pick any match between two teams wherein there is a favorite and there is an underdog. The favorite is the team which is most likely to win the match, while the underdog is the team that is very likely to lose. The beauty of Picks Against the Spread betting is that bookmakers (the person handling the bets) can collect bets wagered on the points spread, not necessarily which team will win or lose.

If gamblers only wagered on the winning team, then there’s no point in betting because everybody would win. To create a betting scenario, you’d have to wager on the point difference of the winner and loser. In Picks Against the Spread betting, a bookmaker sets the ‘line’ which is usually a negative number (ex. “-5”). This number denotes the minimum number of points the favorite has to win over the opponent, or the maximum number of points by which the underdog has to lose. To get these numbers, you’ll have to choose from weekly Picks Against the Spread.

Let’s say you choose a match from this week’s NFL Picks Against the Spread. The bookmaker sets the line at -5. If you bet on the favorite team (let’s say, Atlanta), they’ll have to win by at least 5 points or you lose. If you bet on the underdog team (let’s say, San Francisco), they can lose by as many as 5 points and you still win. If they lose the game by 6 points, you lose the bet. That’s how NFL Picks Against the Spread betting works. So, are you ready to bet? Then choose your pick.

What Has Happened to the NFL? The Disintegration of Professional Sports in America

I am a huge sports fan. I love the NFL and have been a life long Oakland Raider fan. Indeed, at age 8, I got a Kenny Stabler football uniform for Christmas. The NFL has always been part of my life and I look forward to it every year. I love the fall season as it turns to winder and football is a big part of that for me. So, it is with sadness that I have watch pro sports in this country become totally neutered and a joke for any intelligent fan to watch.

It seems though that the NFL is becoming more like the NBA in that players play the game and the refs decide them. The players no longer decide who wins the game on their own merits, the referees do. It is sickening to watch when EVERY game contains multiple: phantom pass interference calls. Peyton Manning gets another chance at a touchdown because he got knocked in the head-he has a helmet on! Touchdowns are taken away every game by some new rule that isn’t a rule and all previous rules are disregarded or interpreted differently. Lost fumbles where it was obviously not a fumble, but it stands because the team was out of challenges left. If you watch the games like I do, you see this every game. Refs over replaying and over analyzing to the point where it is not a game anymore, but a war of rule interpretation. You cannot even look at a quarterback anymore without drawing a fine and a 15-yard penalty and games are frequently decide late by pass interference. Just ask Pittsburgh’s James Harrison how he feels about the $100k he has been fined this year alone.

Yes, winning the games by superior athletic ability, skill, coaching, planning, those days are gone. Now, if the referees interpret rulings in your teams favor, they MIGHT win. Or if you team contains a superstar player. For example, if Ed Reed or Ray Lewis make a hard hit, then they are great ‘smash-mouth’ players. But if an Oakland Raider makes a hit, well the Raiders are a dirty team that draws a lot of penalties.

Maybe it was replay and technology that changed the games forever, but now like basketball, football has come a game where whoever gets the most calls wins. Don’t believe me? It started with the ‘tuck rule’ a few years ago when the Patriots were handed a berth in the Super Bowl. Watch Kobe or Lebron shoot 15-20 foul shots a game, EVERY game if you have any doubts. Oh, and now if you complain you will be given a technical foul and ejected after two, so that the fans can pay huge, over priced ticket prices to watch the bench players play.

It costs a family of 4 on average, $450 to watch an NFL game. Now, instead of watching the game, you can spend that money to watch a referee stick his head under a hood and interpret a rule that you didn’t even know existed. What a thrill!

Along with this, there will likely be a lock-out between owners and players. Millionaires against Billionaires deciding what to do with the money from a game that isn’t even a real game anymore.

Maybe I will watch hockey…

The NFL and Domestic Violence

Violence is a trait of many NFL players. Let’s face it, football is a violent sport and it encourages violent behavior. Unfortunately, what football does not do is teach players how to behave non-violently to problems off the field, particularly when it comes to relationship problems.

This violent behavior begins when boys start playing football as children. The boys are taught to behave tough and aggressive by their coaches, teammates, and even their parents. Boys are taught to use their body and strength to tackle competing players. Making a good “hit” is encouraged. This positively reinforces boys to behave aggressively. The boys are taught to be strong, to be unafraid, and to be a man. The name of the game is to be tough, dominant and show no weaknesses.

Unfortunately, the boys playing football are not taught that this behavior is acceptable only on the field. As boys who play football reach adolescence and adulthood, they have learned how to use aggressive and dominant behavior to win. It is this behavior that can lead to domestic violence against women.

Football never teaches players how to communicate with a woman. Is this the fault of football coaches or should parents take responsibility? The correct answer is that both should take responsibility. If you are going to reward a child for behaving violently while playing football, you must teach that child how to control their behavior when not playing football. I believe that from childhood all the way through the NFL, football players must be taught how to control aggressive and violent behavior. They need to be taught that violence off the field is unacceptable, especially towards women.

The divorce rate among NFL players is very high. Players bring the violence and aggressive energy they have on the field home. After practice or a game, a player’s adrenaline is flowing and they may have a lot of extra energy. If the player was in a big game that his team lost, this can increase the likelihood of violence at home. When you take the environment of football where problems between players are sometimes solved in scuffles and pushing each other around, this behavior becomes second nature to players. In football, if somebody gets in your face, you push them away. However, there is a huge difference between pushing a strong 275 lb player out of your face and pushing a 130 lb woman out of your face. What seems like nothing between players can be deadly when used toward a woman, and much of the time, it is done as a reflex from years of being physical with other players. That is why it is so important that from childhood on, football players are taught how to control their behavior off the field.

The NFL does have programs to teach players how to behave off the field. The problem is that by the time a player reaches the NFL, it is almost too late to teach behavior control. By this time the player has spent more than half of his life being taught to be physical and aggressive. This behavior is now so deeply embedded in the player’s mind that it is very difficult to change. That is why it is so important that football coaches and parents teach these young boys how to behave off the field and to be gentle with women.

If you are a parent reading this article, please talk to your son about violence and that violent behavior towards other people, especially women, is wrong. Yes, physical and aggressive behavior is OK on the football field with other players, but that is the only place it is acceptable. Off the field, players must be taught to control their aggressive behavior and use their mind to solve problems, not their body.

Picking Out a Cheap NFL Jersey

America is a land filled with sports. Baseball, basketball, and soccer are just a few popular sports in the country, and all enjoy a considerable fan base. However, there are some sports more popular than others-like football.

Like all sports fans, football fans love to show what team they’re rooting for. And what’s the better way to show it in everyday life than by buying cheap NFL jerseys?

The reason people do this is simple: cheap NFL jerseys sport the name of a particular player a person is looking for, and it is an exact replica of the clothing these professional players wear during actual games. Wearing a jersey signifies that the person sympathizes with a specific team or player; that one has team spirit. This is why many people buy cheap NFL jerseys from sports stores all over the country. And while buying one might seem simple and straightforward, there are some things to remember when buying cheap NFL jerseys.

The first is to pick a player you’re rooting for. There’s no better way to show team spirit by wearing a jersey of a popular player, especially one sporting the name of a hot new player from your home team who’s just about to play his first game. During times like these, chances are quite a lot of fans in the stadium will be wearing cheap NFL jerseys with this player’s name and number.

Others, meanwhile, choose cheap NFL jerseys with the name of a player who’s been performing well for the team for a couple of seasons. Wearing one is bound to make you fit right in with the rest of your co-football fans, who, more often than not, will be wearing cheap NFL jerseys with the name of that same player.

It is not true that sports are just for men. It’s an old misconception that must be left behind. Fans might not have noticed, but sports merchandisers have observed that more and more women are becoming football fans and turning up for games, and thus have started to release more products geared towards women-efforts which have generally been very successful and very profitable.

So, if you’re of the female gender, or if you’re a guy looking to buy a jersey for a lady you know, you’ll be glad to know that gone are the days when girls looked like clowns with their overgrown cheap NFL jerseys. Nowadays, women can still look hot while sporting the jersey of their favorite team and player.

Of course, who can forget those cute little kiddies? Cheap NFL jerseys aren’t just for adults, now they’re for children as well. If you have kids of your own, it’s not that farfetched to say that your kids have picked up on the same sports preference that you have. So why not buy them cheap NFL jerseys and help them have the local football team spirit? Besides, watching sports together is a good and wholesome binding activity. No matter where they are, watching a game with you in front of the TV or live in a football stadium, they’re guaranteed to love having a jersey with their favorite player’s insignia on it.

National Football League (NFL) Football – A League Of Its Own

Certain activities define the character of a nation. Likewise, the National Football League (NFL) defines the American character probably more than anything else. Conceived as the American Professional Football Association in 1920, it soon adopted the name National Football League in 1922. Undoubtedly the largest of all professional football leagues in America, NFL is made up of 32 teams coming from numerous American regions and cities.

With seeds in the American college football genre, NFL football is a direct descendant of rugby football. Rugby football, in its turn, was imported to the US from Canada in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. In its infancy, it became synonymous with American college football with Montreal’s McGill University inviting Harvard University to Quebec to play the Canadian version of rugby football.

Meanwhile, professional American football was gaining momentum despite the renowned elite football college games. This was happening mainly on the East coast, while professional football was stealing the show in the Midwest. The American Professional Football Association was founded in Ohio with legendary athlete Jim Thorpe as President. It began with eleven teams and was not strictly a league. The main purpose was to end robbing other teams’ players to win a football game.

With the birth of NFL, rules became more stringent and laws began to be enforced. However, teams continued to trickle in and leave at the same pace. It was in the 1970’s and 1980’s that NFL football finally secured its position in the heart and culture of America as the most important football event of the nation. The Super Bowl, a name given to the final game in a NFL series, became an undeclared yet accepted national holiday.

What sealed the NFL football in every American’s heart was the cult it created. It was not only the game that mattered; it was the entire event, the entertainment, the TV coverage and everything that added to the glamour of the football series. To add further to the glitz, NFL introduced pre-season exhibition games. And to add a little more flavor the game, NFL opted to play them international. This came to be known as the American Bowls.

In 1991, it formed the World League of American Football with developmental purposes in mind. This body, presently known as the NFL Europa, has teams in Germany and Netherlands. In 2003, the NFL League launched its own cable-TV channel, the NFL Network.
