Brian Westbrook – 2002 Draft Day Picks

Brian Westbrook was born on September 2, 1979 in Fort Washington, Maryland. Although Westbrook is not the most skilled, biggest, or athletic player he has always used his drive and determination to make his way to the top of any level that he has ever competed at. For this reason, he is known as one of the most complete and versatile players in the entire football world. This is saying a lot when you take all of the great players into consideration.

Westbrook played high school football at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland. Year in and year out DeMatha is a powerhouse in high school football and this held true during Westbrook’s time at the school. Although he did not get a lot of attention from college recruiters, he did do enough to get a few looks from the next level.

After high school Westbrook took his game to Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although he had to fight through several injuries while in college, he still managed to become one of the best players that this level has ever seen. He still holds the NCAA record for all purpose yards with 9,512. On top of all those yards Westbrook also scored 84 touchdowns during his time at Villanova. He finished off his college career by winning the Walton Payton Award which is given annually to the best player in NCAA Division I-AA.

Although Westbrook had a great college career NFL teams were hesitant to pick him in the 2002 NFL Draft due to his small size (5’8″), injuries, and small college experience. But the Philadelphia Eagles decided to take a chance in the third round, and this ended up being a very good decision. In 2004 he finally got a chance to start a few games, and he did a great job by rushing for more than 800 yards. He followed this up with back to back seasons of 1,000 total yards or more in 2005 and 2006.

Football – The Dallas Cowboys

Perhaps no other football team in the NFL is as popular as the Dallas Cowboys. Nicknamed years ago “Americas Team”, people either love them or hate them. But what can’t be argued is their success. In the 45 years of their existence, the Dallas Cowboys have been the won more football games than any other team in all of football. The Cowboys are also well known for having the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

The Dallas Cowboys came into the NFL on January 28, 1960. They make their home in Irving, TX (Dallas suburb) and play their games in Texas Stadium. This stadium, built in 1971, is well known amongst football fans due to the unique hole in the roof above the football field.

Over the years the Cowboys have played in 8 or the 40 Super Bowls, winning 5 of them. Only San Francisco can make that claim. They have made the playoffs 27 times and won 18 division titles.

Jerry Jones is currently the team owner and president. The Dallas Cowboys are coached by Bill Parcells. When the team first came into the league they were coached by Tom Landry. He remained the coach of the Cowboys from 1960 up until 1988. He is arguably one of the greatest head coaches the NFL has ever had.

The Dallas Cowboys have had more than their share of football players go into the Hall of Fame. Some of these include:

o Tom Landry

o Tony Dorsett

o Bob Lily

o Mel Renfro

o Tex Schramm

o Roger Staubach

o Randy White

o Lance Alworth

o Mike Ditka

o Herb Adderly

o Forrest Gregg

o Tommy McDonald

o Jackie Smith

The Dallas Cowboys first season in the NFL was not the kind of start they were hoping for. They failed to win even one game. A few years later, in 1965, they started their run of 9 straight playoff appearances. The Cowboys reached the Super Bowl in 1971, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next year, 1972, the Cowboys returned to the Super Bowl, this time winning it over the Miami Dolphins 24-3.

The football Cowboys later went to the Super Bowl in 76, 78 and 79. The game in 1979 against Pittsburgh is still considered to be the greatest football game in Super Bowl history.

The team went through a lot of rebuilding in the late 80s and Tom Landry retired after the 1988 season. It was at this time that Jerry Jones also bought the team and brought in Jimmy Johnson as head coach. This began a run of success that very few football teams have ever experienced.

With Emmit Smith in the backfield, Troy Aikman as quarterback and Michael Irvin as wide receiver, the Dallas Cowboys won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1993 and 1994. After a major disagreement with owner Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson retired. New coach Barry Switzer came in and took the Cowboys to the playoffs 3 times, including winning the Super Bowl again in 1997.

This success has kept Dallas at the top of the football world for many years. With their steep winning tradition, this success can be expected to continue for many more years to come.

Super Bowl Long Shots – Part 1

Staying with the trend that the NFC will produce the next Super Bowl Champion, perhaps the Buccaneers at 35 to 1 might be worth the chance to come through. No, we are not big Tampa Fans but we like Gruden as a coach and think he might be ready for another run.

John Gruden did wonders for Rich Gannon and I think Brian Griese will start to show similar results this year. Clayton is a great young wide receiver and the young stud running back Williams will make Florida fans forget about the other Williams. Also look out for Larry Brackins at wide receiver; he could be the steal of the draft.

Defense struggled to stay at their standards and will be challenged to uphold the tradition. The D has gotten old but with the projected offensive numbers they will not have to be as good all the time.

Tampa Bay has a chance to be 3-3 going into their bye. When they come out they will be at San Francisco which should put them at 4-3. The next two games will decide if they are to make a run. They get Carolina and Washington at home. If they head out to Chicago with a 6-3 record, then they will have a great shot of positioning themselves for the playoffs. At that point they would be down to around 15 to 1 odds, so grab them now at 35 to 1.

Is this a great bet? Well it is 35 to 1 so we will go out on a limb and say no, but at 35 to 1 and with the Eagles as the only true proven power house in the NFC, why not Tampa Bay to slide through?

This Book’s Written Especially For Football Fans Of Any Level

One of the most fun books I’ve read in a while answers with finality the question all football fans want to know – Which Football Team is the Greatest One of All Time?

That question is answered definitively in Damalis Bryant’s book, “NFL’s All-Time Dream Showdown: Fantasy Matchups & Realistic Results.” I won’t spoil the book for you by revealing the ending but will say that the author does a fantastic job selecting great players, coaches and teams and creating lively and fascinating fantasy encounters of the greatest of the great.

Bryant, a young soldier with a combat stint in Afghanistan, selected the 13 best NFL teams of all time, and pits them against each other in fantasy playoff games resulting in the greatest Super Bowl of All Times. Each section describes the key plays, runs and lead changes in contests among 13 of the best single season NFL teams.

A former sports writer in Virginia before beginning his military career, Bryant has the professional skills and knowledge to pull off what he attempts as author – to narrate fantasy contests based on real styles, talent depths, and strategies.

While serving in Mannheim, Germany, Army Specialist Bryant wrote drafts of an NBA fantasy book and a heavyweight boxing fantasy book and completed the NFL fantasy book during his off-duty hours in Afghanistan.

I enjoyed this book immensely, from the early introduction of Hall of Fame greats to the final whistle when the Super Bowl Champ of All Time is revealed. And I won’t argue with the author’s choice! Anyone with any interest in football also will enjoy this wonderful book.

Fantasy Football – A Lesson In Monetizing Anything

Attention entrepreneurial spirits – the following would have seemed as fictional as Star Wars to our grandfathers, not to mention Vince Lombardi. However, it’s all true and there’s a valuable lesson in this – you can monetize anything!

Congratulations to the NFL. They’ve found a way to keep a huge fan base despite the myriad off the field issues they seem to shrug off weekly. The referee strike of 2012 and the inept replacements? Forget it – that didn’t even register on the NFL fan’s “List of Things to Care About. ” How could it? This is a league that has recently seen popular players either indicted or found guilty of domestic violence, rape, child abuse, and murder. Nice guys, huh? In short, there is NOTHING that would keep us from tuning in each Thursday, Sunday, and Monday (in my lifetime, I am sure there will be a game on every night of the week). TV ratings suggest this monster really IS too big to fail.

So why do we do it? It’s not because we care about who wins or loses the actual game. Some of us do, but we’re now in the minority. No, the wins and losses are not even the second reason. Sports gambling, though illegal in most states, WAS what kept the NFL atop the list for sports fans. People gamble nearly $10 billion on the Super Bowl alone. Imagine what a full season brings in. The joke used to be something like “Daddy’s favorite team is the Dolphins and he wants them to win by less than 4 points.” However, because gambling has such a negative connotation in society, people don’t talk about it much, and certainly not when they lose.

The thing that will help the NFL remain the king of the hill indefinitely turns out to be the photo negative of gambling. It’s Fantasy Football, and it’s nearly reached the point where we can remove the word “Fantasy” from the name. It’s quite real, and it’s here to stay. Gambling is illegal because it’s considered a “game of chance.” Wagering on Fantasy Football is legal because it is considered a “game of skill” (don’t ask me who decides these things, but it’s true). Gambling is ugly because it can ruin people’s lives when they lose. Fantasy Football is innocent and fun, even though the same amount of money is spent on participating, and yes, half of it is lost. With gambling, there is only money. With Fantasy Football, there is money, but also funny team names, trophies, and bragging rights. It’s market norms versus social norms, once again. Unless you live in one of the few states where gambling is legal, it takes connections to people with connections to partake. Participating in Fantasy Football only requires an internet connection and as little as a $1 investment.

Fantasy Football’s roots can be traced back to the 1960’s, but that was a different world. It wasn’t until the last 10 years, thanks entirely to the internet, that it took flight and became a craze… and a SERIOUS business. About 40 million Americans are playing some form of Fantasy Football this year, and they are spending approximately $2 billion to do so, but that’s just the beginning. When you consider the entire industry, the empire that is Fantasy Football is estimated to be worth more than $50 billion! And it’s going to continue to grow. Everybody’s doin’ it. I play, my friends play. Heck, even NFL players play! Just this week, one NFL player tweeted “I’m probably going to lose my fantasy football matchup this week cause (Adrian Peterson) can’t play Sunday for disciplining his child… ” Really.

While you won’t hear announcers talk about point spreads, they frequently refer to Fantasy statistics. The crawl at the bottom of the TV screen is now devoted to the new national pastime. As big as the NFL has become, it recognizes that it NEEDS the Fantasy Football element to keep its brand healthy, so they go out of their way to promote it. There are magazines, books, radio shows, and TV shows devoted to it and there is even a TV series based on a group of friends tied together by their Fantasy Football league. Only in America!

On-line Fantasy Football sites are raking in money, capitalizing on the popularity of this “game of skill.” One of the most popular sites boasts that it pays out more than $10 million per week. Considering they are cleverly charging 10% on every dollar to facilitate the thousands of contests among strangers, it’s easy to calculate how a company like this can quickly become worth millions almost overnight. And it’s not just NFL football. Most of these sites provide the forum for “Fantasy” baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, and the major college sports.

The lesson in all of this is simple – If you build the site, they will come, and they will come with dollars to spend. Find the product that people are crazy about and make it available to them on-line, in any form you can. If you don’t have the product itself, write a book about it. If you don’t want to write a book, write an article and sell it. Position yourself as an “expert” (whoever questions that anyway), and you’ll command a price.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. It’s nearly game time and I need to root for my kicker’s offense to move the ball down the field to the 30 and then get stopped. Strange thing, this Fantasy Football.

Sports Betting Football Tips – Three Great Football Betting Tips to Win More Football Wagers

I’ve been betting on football for a very long time and I’ve learned some great sports betting football tips that I’m going to share with you. Betting on football is a process that requires continuing development unless you buy football picks from someone.

Today, I’ll share with you three football betting tips to help you win more in your football wagering journey.

Football Betting Tip 1

Don’t bet college football games like NFL football games. This is one of the more common mistakes in football. Do it at your own peril.

With college football, you have young men coming into their own. They’re at school and under all sorts of influences. NFL football is about professional business men. It’s more of a business attitude and to win, you need to bet it a little differently.

Football Betting Tip 2

Make sure your football parlay betting is only a small portion of your overall football wagering. If it’s not, you’ll eventually become a long run loser, which I know you don’t want.

Football parlay bets are a blast, but don’t just bet parlay cards. You need a healthy dose of single wagers.

Football Betting Tip 3

Bet the value. It’s really simple. When you make football bets, you want to find lines that offer you value. Let’s say that the New England Patriots are playing at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

The line is -21. Is this value? Nope. Sure, the Patriots are probably going to win (in our hypothetical NFL game), but 21 is much too high.

It doesn’t matter if you know who will win the game. What matters is beating the spread. And what matters more is getting great value for your bets.

Football Betting Tips

Football betting is a bit less of a gamble than other types of betting. It’s not quite the “crap shoot” of, well, craps because the bettor has an opportunity to gauge the quality of each and every team. That being said, there are some football betting tips that can help you get the most out of the week’s games. While no betting system is foolproof, these football betting tips will help you come out ahead.

First, don’t get greedy. Gamblers all want to have the big win, but try not to put all your eggs in one basket. So long as you get a series of wins, you should come out ahead. It’s recommended that you put smaller bets on a wider variety of games, rather than put one huge bet on a single game–unless you think the game is a lock. Unfortunately, the spread set by odds makers for any game is rarely a lock.

A couple of other football betting tips: find a good online site and do your homework. You want to find that makes good on payouts in a timely manner. Often, gamblers are disappointed to find that they are not immediately credited to their bank account. This can be the case if you don’t make bets directly from your debit card. It can sometimes take weeks, or even months, to be credited if you don’t bet with a quality site. You need to research both online gambling sites as well as the teams you’ll be betting on.

Professional gamblers sometimes work full time researching the week’s games. This is not quite feasible for everybody, but try your best to research the game before you make a bet. One of the better football gambling tips is to subtract from the spread of the favorite, rather than adding to the total of the loser. More often than not, this will lead to a win for the bettor.

Joe Namath Biography and Interesting Facts – New York Jets

One word to sum of Joe Namath? Confidence. In football, it is what separates the run of the mill quarterback from the championship quarterback. When the experts talk about confidence, the discussion inevitably turns to Joe Namath. Three days prior to Super Bowl III in 1969, Joe Namath brashly guaranteed that his upstart New York Jets would defeat the might Baltimore Colts.

With Joe’s confident declaration, Namath had broken the unwritten rule of professional sports: Never guarantee a victory. When the 17 point underdogs went out the next day and actually did humiliate the Colts, it was a defining moment for football and for the brash young star who made it happen.

Super Bowl III in 1969 is considered a landmark event in football history. When Namath and the AFL’s Jets beat the Baltimore Colts of the NFL, it showed that the AFL had finally reached parity, ending years of dominance of the NFL.

Joe Namath’s Biography

Best Wide Receiving Duo – Oregon State Beavers TJ Houshmandzadeh and Chad Ochocinco Johnson

The 2000 Oregon State University Beavers wide receiving duo of TJ Houshmandzadeh and Chad Ochocinco Johnson would eventually become the star pass catching core of the NFL franchise the Cincinnati Bengals. Exactly how these two young men from opposite ends of the country (California and Florida) would find themselves playing on the same football teams at the college and professional levels is a completely random coincidence.

Oregon State, located in Carvallis, OR, has a respectable football program that from time to time places players onto NFL teams. In the case of Pro Bowl wide receivers Johnson and Houshmandzadeh who played together on the Oregon State Beavers squad in the fall of 2000 having two NFL all-star wide receivers in the same huddle on a college team is exceptionally rare for any school – even the most well established powerhouses. The shear unlikelihood of having so much talent on one offense is especially rare for a mid-tier level organization like the Oregon State Beavers.

While playing together for the Beavers in 2000 it was largely Chad Johnson who dominated the spotlight during a prolific season in which the two future NFL stars led their team to a very impressive 11-1 finish that included a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl held in Phoenix. After successfully catching the attention of NFL scouts while playing alongside each other in Carvallis for a season the duo of wide receiver greats very randomly landed on the same professional team at the conclusion of the April 2001 NFL Draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals chose Chad Johnson (who would later change his name to Chad Ochocinco in 2008) with the 36th overall pick in the second round and TJ Houshmandzadeh with the 204th overall pick in the seventh round. Despite a significant amount of offensive success over the next eight seasons with quarterback Carson Palmer the wide receiving duo of Ochocinco (Johnson) and Houshmandzadeh was broken up on March 2, 2009 when TJ signed a contract to leave Cincinnati to play for the Seattle Seahawks. The March, 2009 signing marked the first time in nearly a decade that Chad (from Miami, FL) and TJ (from Barstow, CA)were not on the same team.

To give readers who are not very familiar with college or professional football proper perspective as to just how unusual the situation with Chad Ochocico Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh was it should be noted that a repeat occurrence of similar circumstances has not occurred anywhere else in professional football since Chad and TJ were united from opposites sides of the country (Florida and California) on the Oregon State campus in 2000. The two standout players are arguably the best combination of wide receivers to take their collective play making ability from college to the pros together.
