The Ultimate Campfire Hash

What you need:

• 2 packages refrigerated shredded potato hash browns
• 1 package sausage links, thawed and sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
• 12 eggs, lightly beaten (prep at home – pour mixture in a jug and store in your cooler)
• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
• 1/4 cup butter, cubed
• 1/4 cup chopped green pepper
• 1/4 cup chopped onion
• Salt and pepper to taste

In a skillet over a grill or hot coals of a campfire, melt the butter then cook the hash browns, sausages, green pepper and onion until potatoes are lightly browned, about 15-20 minutes. Push the hash brown mixture to the side of the skillet and pour the egg mixture in the center. Cook eggs until set. Season with salt and pepper.

When ready, stir the hash brown mixture into the egg. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese and cook for 2 minutes more or until cheese has melted.

Tropical Ham Breakfast Sandwich

What you need:

• 6 French rolls, thawed at room temperature, sliced in half
• 1/4 kg. deli sliced ham
• 6 pineapple rings, halved
• 6 slices cheddar cheese
• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon honey

In a small bowl, mix together the Dijon mustard and the honey. Spread the bottom of each roll with the mixture. Top it with a few slices of ham, followed by a pineapple ring, a slice of cheddar cheese then the top half of the roll.

Wrap each sandwich with a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil. Place on a hot grill rack or over hot campfire coals until hot, about 15-20 minutes, depending on how hot your fire is.

Remove the sandwiches from the fire and allow a few minutes to cool before opening the foil and serving.

Since, we don’t have a crystal ball, it is impossible to predict, accurately, the future! This is especially true, when, it comes to economic issues, including investment, real estate, interest rates, inflationary pressures, government actions, international factors, etc. What are the ramifications of inflation, recession, interest rates, Federal Reserve Bank decisions, etc? 5) Perception and attitude: The past couple of years,apparently, created a public perception, plus many fears, with a crippling economic impact.

Either, we begin to plan, effectively, and with common sense and an open – mind, many will be at – risk. Wake up, America, and demand better leadership, service and representation.

A few days ago on Melbourne’s 60 Minutes, renowned scientist Dr Kerry Sieh predicted the guaranteed next big wave or giant Tsunami will definitely happen, and it will be the Grandaddy of them all.

Indonesia gets the full force this time around … When?… whether it be in a few months, or in a decade is all Dr Sieh cannot accurately predict at this present moment.

Kerry Sieh, a Geology professor at the California Institute of Technology, knows Indonesia’s earthquake zone like the back of his hand … and he did in fact predict the first earthquake that hit parts of Indonesia on Boxing Day. Now he predicts another Tsunami will hit, and this will be the grandaddy of them all!

From Melbourne MSN Channel 9’s Sixty Minutes Richard Carleton explains why the earthquakes and ensuing Tsunami’s occur:

RICHARD CARLETON: Dr Sieh’s focus is on the faultline, 5000km long, where moving plates of the earth’s crust grind against each other. The plate under the Indian Ocean slides beneath Indonesia, much like the disappearing stairs on an escalator. But some sections get stuck and then later snap upwards, releasing gargantuan force.

DR KERRY SIEH: The plates get hung up and they can’t slip past each other, so the upper plate gets dragged down as this plate sinks and with it, the islands get dragged down, slowly but surely, and when the earthquake happens, they pop back up and out.

RICHARD CARLETON: And that’s what happened last Boxing Day. The quake jolted the mainland so violently that people were thrown to the ground.

What a pointless waste of life! … Dr Sieh warned the governments concerned ahead of time, he even went down personally and alerted inhabitants of the affected villages in Indonesia to protect themselves against the Tsunami he just knew would happen … but nobody paid any attention to him … now when he walks into these same villages, he is welcomed and treated as a hero !

From his 14 satellite research station, high in the mountain tops of the humid Indonesian jungle, Dr Sieh now predicts the next Tsunami will hit:

.. and the precise location …. right opposite the city of Padang in Indonesia … inhabitants: 1 million people!

Repeat: All he cannot pinpoint is when … this disaster could be in months, the next decade or in a hundred years!

The city of Padang is base for Australian surfers who go there to surf the waves of the Menwawais … where some of the best surfing breaks in the world may be found .. as an Australian citizen this is startling news.

Geographically, the city of Padang would have difficulty dealing with a high tide, the devastation caused by the grandaddy of Tsunamis is incomprehensible.

Imagine a mere 15 minute warning before the earthquake ..

… and then the waters of the giant Tsunami gushing down the streets of Padang, just like it did in Banda Acheh washing everything away in its stride ..

… a moving torrent of cars, oil, broken trees and precious human life!

My call to all my fellow Marketers, the Search Engine Optimization community, Retail colleagues and anyone who reads this post: do everything in your power to reach your readers in Indonesia, particularly the city of Padang, they need to take heed and make adequate provision, to stop the pointless human slaughter this time around.

Whether this be in the form of lobbying your local Government bodies, or through local press release, we must help this time, before the devastation of this giant wave; the grandaddy of Tsunami’s takes away more precious human life.

But above all do this in a responsible manner .. causing wide spread panic amongst unworldly village inhabitants or your worldwide audience will not help at all.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4, collectively known as ‘Next Gen’ consoles, have the capacity to allow far more sophisticated games with better graphics, a larger gaming world and more creative game development. The gaming public are excited about the possibilities of Next Gen and are eager to discover how the increased capabilities of the Next Gen consoles will translate into better and more stylish games. But with amazing graphics already with us, where will the big leap in game quality come from?

During the past ten years the most significant gaming advances have come from better in game graphics. I remember playing the first ever Fifa Soccer game for the Mega Drive and thinking it looked fantastic. Try playing the game now and it is archaic! Compare that with the NBA 2K 14 game for PS4, where your computer player even appears to sweat in a realistic way during the game and it is safe to say we have reached a point where players look almost lifelike.

Not content with looking realistic, player movement and AI decision making mimics the real life sports stars personality and playing style. Messi and Bale play like Messi and Bale in FIFA 14. This heightens realism and is more immersive. Next Gen gamers expect attention to detail on every nuance of a game and the standard set by the first games released on Next Gen consoles has set the bar high for other developers to meet and in time, surpass.

It is such early days for Next Gen gaming that there is plenty of room for improvement. Compare the quality of games in PlayStation 3 when it was first released to what is now being released today. We sit here in 2014 and speculate that we are not yet seeing a fraction of the potential capability of Next Gen games.

The major release of 2013 for PS3 and Xbox was Grand Theft Auto 5. This game presented the best game possible on current gen, squeezing every bit of power out of the console. It can be considered a passing of the torch and an admission that this is as good as it gets on the current gen consoles. Rockstar Gaming even said as much. GTA V underlined that this was a starting point for PS4 and Xbox One, posing the tantalising rhetorical question to the gamer, ‘if we can offer you this on current gen, imagine what we can achieve with Next Gen?’

Early releases on Next Gen consoles have taken advantage of the freedoms offered by improved hardware capacity, choosing to increase the level of immersion in the games. They have chosen to empower the gamer to make decisions that set the direction of their in game experience. I believe this is the way forward for future game development. The constraints of PS3 means that the ‘rats in a maze’ feeling of some games can be relaxed and whilst every game must have its perimeters, the net can be cast wider thus reducing the impact of being trapped like a pinball bouncing around but ultimately drawn towards the games specific conclusion. With larger in game environments, the Next Gen open world games offers more opportunities for the gamer to explore sub-plots, where instead of just completing set missions you can trade to earn money, running businesses or simply explore the vast in-game environment at your leisure.

Recent trailers of the upcoming open world game ‘Watchdog’, which is scheduled for release on Next Gen consoles from May 27th in the UK, demonstrate that the user will be able to interact with any AI member of the public across the vast virtual Chicago landscape in their role as a vigilante rejecting the close security system in the city. The game is so vast on Next Gen that developers Ubisoft have posted online videos of hour-long game play sessions without needing to worry about given away all the secrets of the game.

With the possibilities of open world games so vast on Next Gen, it is very interesting to note that the most successful open world game developer, Rockstar Gaming, have yet to release details of any future prospective Next Gen titles, choosing instead to update GTA V later this year. We know from experience that Rockstar can take up to two years to deliver a title on PS3 and it will likely take at least this long for a Next Gen game. I firmly believe that Rockstar will set a new standard and deliver a brilliant Next Gen open world game, far more vast than anything we have seen so far. Considering the look of Watchdog, this will be a significant achievement for Rockstar, if they get it right.

For those sports fans and sports simulation lovers out there like me, one title has already set a high standard for others to follow. NBA 2K 14 delivers an exceptional standard of graphics quality and the game play looks as real as I can imagine seeing for some years. Even in this early stage of Next Gen sports sim development, NBA 2K 14 has set a very high standard. Their choices offer a glimpse into how the developers will seek to use the power of the Next Gen technology in future games. The vignettes where your player takes decisions off the court like interacting with opposing players, coaches, backroom staff and sponsors will be further developed to enhance the gaming experience, giving the gamer a more immersive experience of life as a professional basketball player rather than focusing solely on game play. I was surprised that such a polished game emerged so quickly. If this is as bad as sports sims get, PS4 will be a happy place for the sports gaming enthusiast.

Without a doubt game developers are under pressure to deliver. PS3 games were good, but PS4 gamers have been conditioned to expect excellence by the robust promotion of Next Gen and anything but a sharp rise in quality will be met with derision by the tough audience who are quick to lament any substandard release. Ask any Madden 25 fan who bought the PS4 version. With the exception of slightly smoother graphics, this game could have been released for PS3 and differs only marginally from the current gen console. That is not good enough and fans of that franchise are expecting better from the developers EA next year.

The challenge is set and gamers are eager to see how the game developers utilise the enhanced capability of Next Gen and the freedoms offered to produce great games. Developers need to balance the current game vacuum against the necessity of producing quality titles. With better graphics, more immersion, a better gaming experience overall and the power of the internet to facilitate gaming battles around the world, Next Gen has thrown us into a new era of console gaming. With it comes a hunger for the excellence, a more critical eye and we watch with anticipation as the game developers work on new releases to take advantage of Next Gen capacity to produce better and more immersive games.

The current gen king is dead, long live Next Gen.

Chili is a staple for camping trips simply because it’s a delicious and uncomplicated dish. It’s easy to prepare and cook, feeds a lot and more importantly, it can easily be modified to fit your preferences (can be really spicy or not, can be vegan etc.).

Best of all, it’s best enjoyed around a campfire and makes for a fulfilling dinner. Try these quick and easy campfire chili recipes on your next outdoor adventure!

Easy Five Can Chili

What you need:

• 1 can black beans, drained
• 1 can red kidney beans, drained
• 1 can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
• 1 can diced tomatoes
• 1 can beer, preferably lager
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 2 teaspoons sea salt
• 1 teaspoon cumin
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• Your choice of toppings (cheese, onions or avocado)

Remove the chipotle peppers from the can, reserving the adobo sauce. Remove the seeds and ribs before chopping.

Heat the olive oil in a large dutch oven over a campfire. Cook the onions until tender then add the black beans, kidney beans, chopped chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, tomatoes (with juices), beer, sea salt, cumin and garlic powder. Stir to combine ingredients well.

Cook until chilli has thickened, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat, put toppings of your choice and serve!

Yummy Veggie Chili

What you need:

• 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 large can fire roasted tomatoes
• 2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped
• 1 red bell pepper, chopped
• 1 onion, chopped
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 jalapeno, finely chopped
• 3 cups vegetable broth
• 3 tablespoons chilli powder
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 tablespoon tomato paste
• 1 tablespoon cumin
• Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Over hot campfire coals, heat the olive oil in a large pot. Saute the carrots, bell pepper and onion until tender, about 5 mins. Stir in the garlic and jalapeno and cook for 1 min more. Pour in the tomato paste, then add the black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, tomatoes and vegetable broth. Season with chilli powder, cumin, salt and pepper.

Bring to a boil then lower the heat. Allow to simmer for 20-30 minutes. Serve immediately.

Everybody loves pies. Whether sweet or savory, they are considered a filling comfort food by many. They’re great for any occasion and can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors. If you plan to make one over your bonfire at camp, go for easy to do but delicious recipes.

These 3 campfire pie recipes are a must-try for your next camping adventure!

Mini Campfire Cherry Pies

What you need:

• 1 package pre-made pie crust (2 pie crusts per package)
• 1 small can cherry pie filling
• 1/4 cup white sugar
• Vegetable oil

Roll out the pie crust and using a drinking glass, cut out circles (about 2-3 inches wide). Gather the remaining crust, roll out again and cut out more circles, as many as desired. Place a circle on a plate, place a tablespoon of the cherry pie filling and top with another crust circle. Press the edges down together using the tines of the fork to seal the mini pie.

Repeat with remaining ingredients. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil on a cast iron pan over hot campfire coals. When ready, cook 1-3 pies (depending on the size of your pan) at a time until each side is browned. Remove from heat and drain on paper towels. When all are cooked, dredge the pies in white sugar before serving.

Apple and Raisin Pie

What you need:

• 2 slices white or wheat bread
• 3 tablespoons apple pie filling
• 1 tablespoon raisins
• 1 tablespoon butter, softened

Spread the butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Place a slice, butter side down, into an oiled toaster. Spread with apple pie filling, sprinkle with raisins and top with the other bread slice, butter side up.

Close the toaster and cook over a hot campfire, turning occasionally, for 4-5 minutes, or until pie is golden brown.

Yummy S’mores Pie

What you need:

• 8 slices cinnamon swirl bread
• 4 graham cracker squares, crushed into large pieces
• 1 cup mini campfire marshmallows
• 1/2 cup chocolate chips

In a greased pie iron, place a slice of cinnamon swirl bread and sprinkle with graham cracker pieces, marshmallows and chocolate chips (divide ingredients among 4 pies). Top with another cinnamon bread slice and close the pie iron.

Remove excess bread coming out of the pie iron. Cook over campfire for 1 minute per side. Place on a plate and serve.

Getting Things Done (GTD), is a productivity methodology designed by David Allen. GTD increases your productivity by getting things out of your mind, and into a reliable system that you can trust. This frees your mind to work on the task at hand, instead of trying to remember a myriad of things at once. You will find yourself more relaxed, and more productive at the same time.

In particular, one easy-to-use part of GTD (which I describe later), only takes 2

minutes to learn, but can increase

your efficiency by phonemenal levels.

There are many parts to GTD. One important component is next-action lists, which

replace to-do lists in other methodologies.

David Allen realised that in today’s dynamic society, todo lists, daily plans, etc, often

do not work. If everything and everyone around you is going 100% to plan they can

work, but how often does everything go according to plan? A meeting runs longer

than expected, the report you need isn’t ready yet, or the computer network goes

down for an hour, and your whole day can go out of whack.

David Allen’s solution to this was next action lists. Rather than plan out the day

based on projects, you list the next-action items for tasks you have to do. You

record these next-actions into separate lists based on context.

This is best shown with an example…

Suppose you had the following todo list:

• Research buying new Palm pilot
• Arrange next marketing meeting
• Service car
• Buy new Apple Mac
• Cancel magazine subscription
• Prepare for the department meeting

The first step in GTD is to change the list to be based on the next physical action for

each project:

• Search online to find different potential Palm Pilots to buy
• Phone John to arrange next marketing meeting
• Look in car manual to find qualified mechanic for car
• Phone Apple Reseller and buy new Apple Mac
• Phone and cancel magazine subscription
• Print out the financial report for the department meeting

By listing the next specific physical action, it becomes much easier to proceed on

the projects. You might procrastinate on “Prepare for the department meeting”, but

“Print out the financial report for the department meeting”, seems like a much easier

thing for you to tackle, and therefore, you are MUCH more likely to get it done. Just

this one idea alone will increase your productivity dramatically! It seems simple, but

it is actually quite profound, because it focuses your mind on ACTION.

The next step in Getting Things Done, is to move these next-action’s into separate

lists based on context:

@Phone (Things I can do when I am at a phone):

• Phone John to arrange next marketing meeting
• Phone and cancel magazine subscription
• Phone Apple Reseller and buy new Apple Mac

@Computer:

• Search online to find different potential Palm Pilots to buy
• Print out the financial report for the department meeting

@Home:

• Look in car manual to find qualified mechanic for car

Why have separate lists? The main benefit is that it lets you look at the tasks that are

only suitable to where you are at the moment. If you are at work, you aren’t

distracted by the tasks that are on the @Home list, and if you are at home, you

aren’t distracted by the work tasks. The actual GTD contexts that you use are up to

you. The standard ones that David Allen recommends are generally based on

location (like the ones above), but you can use whatever works best for you.

Another benefit of separating out the lists into contexts is that it becomes easy to

change what you are working on quickly if something goes wrong. Suppose your in

the middle of some research online, and the computer network goes down. Whilst

other people might decide it’s time for a coffee break, you can just look at you

phone list, and start tackling some of the @Phone tasks instead.

Breaking your todo lists into next-action lists based on context may seem like a lot

more work than a standard todo list, but it isn’t really. It only takes a little bit longer

to plan, but the increase in productivity more than compensates for this.

Next-Actions lists are a small part of the Getting Things Done methodology. They

are useful on their own, but their power is multiplied when used with the rest of

David Allen’s system. GTD is incredibly effective, and I highly encourage you to try it

out for yourself, by reading David Allen’s book (“Getting Things Done: The Art Of

Stress Free Productivity”), or by trying out some GTD software.
