The Advantages of Using a Central Reservation System at Your Hotel

As a hotel or motel owner, there are certain things you concentrate on a daily basis. One of the most important aspects each day is ensuring you keep your occupancy rate high, the more rooms you fill, the higher your profits.

Ideally you want to run at a one hundred percent occupancy rate every single day, even though you know that this is almost impossible, except maybe during peak season. You have a website, you are a member of all the hotel booking sites and you spend hours working on your online advertising, what more can you do?

A central reservation system can help increase your occupancy rate by turning your website visitors into customers. This system gives you the ability to take reservations directly from your own website without any fuss, it can greatly increase your occupancy rate as majority of customers these days use the internet when looking for accommodation.

These systems are usually flexible, enabling you to tailor them to meet your exact requirements. Accepted throughout the world in hotels, motels, travel agencies and more. It integrates directly with your website, enabling you to take reservations straight away. In so many cases hotels are losing bookings, because the customer has to pick up the phone to book a room, with the central reservation system, they can make a quick decision and make their booking without any delays, phone calls or inconvenience. This means your customers can book their accommodation at any time of the day or night.

These are highly efficient systems. As you can imagine one of the biggest mistakes any hotel can make is over booking. Even with the technology available, many hotels make this mistake from time to time, often due to overworked or rushed staff taking calls without noticing that all the rooms have already been booked. The central reservation system ensures that the information provided on your website is up to date in terms of the number of rooms available and the rates of each room, eliminating any errors and over bookings.

This also means you are adding a beneficial experience to your customer before they even arrive. So many guests these days will book accommodation in the evening as they sit with their laptop in front of the computer. Some will even book while on the road, looking for last-minute deals that they can take advantage of once they arrive in a town or area that they like. There is no reason that you can’t benefit from these guests and increase your occupancy rate considerably.

The central reservation systems available on the market are very easy to use and easily managed by management and staff. If you already have a hotel reservation system, you can find a package that will integrate, completely eliminating any employee error in terms of the bookings being taken.

It is also a cost-effective solution. Once you start noticing the bookings coming in off your own website, you will soon start seeing a return on your investment. These are not expensive software programs, yet they can give your hotel with an increased revenue, soon paying for themselves over and over.

Overall the central reservations systems can make a huge difference to the functionality, productivity and service that you give to your customers on daily basis. Customers are more likely to book online than via the phone and there are no fees to pay to outside booking sites, because the bookings are directly off your own website.

A Haunted Hotel Room

If you visit Lily Dale, the largest Spiritualist community in North America, one of the places to stay is The Maplewood Hotel, a rebuilt horse barn that opened a century ago. People swear the place is haunted; stories abound of horse whinnies in the middle of the night, and a lady in Victorian clothes that floats up the second-floor stairway. When booking accommodations, people often request a haunted room, but the reservation agent politely tells them the rooms are as clear as the sky on a summer day.

Lily Dale can get quite crowded on the weekends, and it’s almost impossible to get spur-of-the-moment accommodations at the Maplewood. But luck was on our side last year, when circumstances dictated that we needed to get to the Dale a day earlier than our scheduled arrival. We’d been on the road for several hours and every motel we stopped at was either all booked up, or only had smoking rooms available. At 10 pm, we crossed our fingers and my husband telephoned to see if there was possibly an opening at the Maplewood. “We’ll even take a broom closet!” he begged the night manager.

Our luck came through. There was a last-minute vacancy.

“We’ll be there in 15 minutes!” he cried, and we made the 25-minute drive in record time. I don’t know how fast we were going because I kept my eyes closed most of the trip.

When the night manager saw us arrive with our luggage, he smiled sheepishly. “The room only has a double bed,” he said, and led us to the top floor. Room 42 was a small, square space with a hardwood floor, a bed, a wooden chair, and a two-drawer dresser.

Exhausted from our drive, we collapsed into bed and fell asleep.

Sometime during the night, we woke to the sounds of a creaking rocking chair, and thudding footsteps walking around the bed. What was my husband doing out of bed, rummaging around the room? Maybe he was having a hard time snoozing, and was rocking himself to sleep. In my dog-tired state, I was too bushed to talk to him. The rhythmic sound of the rocking chair was like a metronome that quickly lulled me back to sleep.

When I woke the next morning, he was looking at the chair that definitely had four wooden feet on the floor. When he saw me, he said, “I could’ve sworn I heard a rocking chair last night.”

“Me, too,” I said.

Later that morning, we were able to move into the room we’d originally booked: number 6. A few days later, we happened to overhear a conversation between two women on the Maplewood’s front porch. One said she’d had a very interesting experience in her room last night involving a rocking chair and tramping footsteps around the bed.

“Were you by any chance in Room 42?” I asked.

The woman nodded. “I understand that happens to a lot of people,” she said. “On a person’s first night in Room 42, they’ll get a kind-of visitation, as if someone’s checking them out and making sure they’re OK.”

I smiled, happy to know that we’d evidently passed the Room 42 test and we’d been approved by spirit.

Divorce Tips: How To Avoid Two Million Dollars In Legal Fees

The divorce rate in the United States has been approximately fifty percent for decades.

So, one out of two marriages end in divorce.

Moreover, with the legalization of gay marriage and civil unions, there are likely to be more divorces, simply because there will be more marriages.

Many years ago, a very wealthy couple came to consult with this author to see if their marriage could be repaired through marriage counseling.

This couple was in trouble. The husband had discovered that the wife was having an ongoing affair with another man. In fact, he had video of her leaving a motel room at three o’clock in the morning on several occasions.

In addition, there was a lot of conflict between the wife and her in laws.

After seeing the couple about six times, they both came to the conclusion that it would be best if they would part company and go their separate ways.

They had three young children and substantial assets including several family businesses, a large house in one of the country’s wealthiest communities and a large number off shore bank accounts.

The husband was very angry with the wife and the wife was quite disenchanted with her husband.

I suggested that they try to settle the matter fairly, diplomatically and in a civilized manner. I reminded them that they could use their funds for their children, for their educations and to set up trust funds and help them start their own businesses if that is what they might want to do as they grew up.

I also suggested that they consider mediation as this would allow them to save money, time emotional energy and legal fees.

I also explained that the law was probably pretty clear as to what each of them would get once they dissolved their relationship.

Unfortunately, each of them hired law firms that appeared to be more interested fighting and in generating fees than in settling the matter in a friendly and efficient manner.

After almost two years of fighting and two million dollars in legal fees, they each wound up with exactly what they would have gotten had they settled their case early on.

Anecdotes like this one are still all too common where divorce law is concerned.

According to the famous and highly respected New York attorney, Barry Slotnick, “The best way to avoid this kind of mess, is to utilize prenuptial agreements prior to entering into a marriage.”

As Mr. Slotnick noted in our recent interview, “A prenuptial agreement is needed when two people have a lot of assets and when one person has more assets and wealth than does another.”

A prenuptial is very much like a preventative approach in medicine.

So, if your economic situation warrants it, consider entering into this kind of agreement prior to getting married.

Book Review – The Alphabet Sisters by Monica McInerney

I can’t explain why it took me until 2013 to read my first novel by Monica McInerney. She is an Australian born author with international bestsellers including: A Taste for It, Upside Down Inside Out, Spin the Bottle, and most recently Lola’s Secret. I often exchange books with friends and family and was not familiar with Monica McInerney until I was handed a book called The Alphabet Sisters. The book was a quick read filled with dynamic characters that came to life with the authors great detailing of physical attributes as well as emotional characteristics. McInerney wove together a beautiful story of a family in turmoil who overcame their own fears and selfish pride. I can only apologize for not reading this delightful story earlier (it was copyright in 2004) and I can say without a doubt that I will be reading more of McInerney’s books in the very near future.

This lovely work takes place in the Clare Valley of South Australia just before the 80th birthday celebration of Lola, the grandmother to the Alphabet Sisters. Lola has decided to reunite her estranged granddaughters at the family’s small motel in the lovely wine country. The girls oblige their grandmother (rather begrudgingly) and come to the motel. They have no intention of being as close as they had once been as a singing group touring as the infamous Alphabet Sisters, with their eccentric outfits and show tunes. The family dynamics range from uncomfortable and tense to tender and loving as the story unfolds. McInerney has a way of bringing characters to life without any one individual becoming an antagonist. There is something to love about each of the sisters: Anna is the oldest and is quick to take charge, Bett is the middle child feeling awkward and unsure of herself from time to time, and Carrie is the youngest and the one sister who had never left and was still in the Clare Valley running the motel with her parents when her siblings returned. Lola is the humorous grandmother and matriarch of the family; she too has a secret that doesn’t come out until near the end of the book. To find out more about her secret, you can pick up a copy of Lola’s Secret short listed for the General Fiction Book of the Year in 2012 Australian Book Industry Awards and was published in the USA in October 2012.

The Alphabet Sisters takes a close look at family dynamics, sibling relationships and rivalries, secrets, and different points of view. McInerney brought to life the many unique characters whose bonds and relationships delighted their aged Grandmother, Lola who was the catalyst for reuniting the family and mending the broken relationships. McInerney’s first job out of high school, at age 17, was as a wardrobe girl and later a script writer. She pulled from her own background as the story of the Alphabet Sisters unfolded with a home grown play, auditions, local amateur talent, and a packed performance to fund a new ambulance for their town.

From Ponta Ponta – Mozambique

From the border at Kosi Bay to the tip of the Santa Marla Peninsula, about 100km to the north, Ponta do Ouro is the first of six such points that stretch all the way up the coast of southern Mozambique. If you roll down your windows you will let in the unmistakable smell of Mozambique flood into the car; dust, salt and sunshine ………………

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro, mostly abandoned during Mozambique’s civil war is now being renovated. There are new buildings too, and many signboards advertising South African-funded housing developments.

The Motel do Mar on the beachfront is a Ponta landmark but apart from a fresh coat of paint, the old motel hasn’t changed much:

Want to know why southern Mozambique is so popular? Look no further than the beaches

The double-story cabanas are comfortable, clean and very close to the beach. The beach is protected from the brunt of the Indian Ocean by a horseshoe-shaped headland, where the water is warm and the silvery bay shines romantically in the evening light.

One can lie in bed and listen to the sea crashing outside. Fishing and scuba-diving is the greatest attraction which brings multitudes of visitors to Ponta. The shallow reefs close to shore are perfect for diving, but game fish lurk in the depths further out where the ocean floor drops off steeply.

At a reef called Steps, colourful creatures such as a rare frogfish and tiny paperfish can be seen. Huge whale sharks can also be spotted behind the breakers and the local 300-strong pod of dolphins, which are keen to interact with humans, have a home radius which extends about 40km along the coast. Ponta’s local sea dog, Spot, is always on the lookout for dolphins. If you dive down deeper and escape the choppy surface conditions, you can be surrounded by a galaxy of dolphin clicks and squeaks. But with just a flick of their tails, they can vanish again.

Although there are freshwater lakes all along the coast, swimming isn’t a good idea as there are signs alerting you to the presence of crocodiles.

There are all sorts of curios and carvings on offer at the local craft market in Ponta do Ouro.

A 7km section of road to Ponta Malongane is quite rough with deep, sandy stretches and steep inclines. About halfway to Malongane, to the left of the road, is the Sand Pit, a big exposed dune scoured with tyre tracks. This is where quad bikers and 4×4 nuts do damage to themselves and the environment in season. The Sand Pit is a place to avoid unless you’re an adrenalin junkie. Ponta Malongane has just one resort, Parque de Malongane and has neat, airy chalets, rondavels, a large, shady campsite and a well-equipped dive centre. The beach is not as protected as the one a Ponta do Ouro, but is less crowded.

The best view can be found at the Nascer do Sol Bar (meaning “sunrise bar”), above the dive centre. One dive at a reef called Anchor or at another at Drop Zone, where a big loggerhead turtle can be seen. After diving one can head for Ponta Mamoli, another 4km farther up the coast.

Hand drawn anti-quad and scrambler signs are to be seen because quad bikes aren’t welcome at the resorts. You can however go on a horse ride, a scuba-dive or a go on a turtle-spotting trip in season. You might be lucky enough to see a female leatherback laying her eggs under the cover of darkness.

If you’ve had enough of camping, Mamoli is the perfect place to spoil yourself for a night or two. The two-person timber chalets have en-suite bathrooms and soft beds with billowing mosquito nets. What a life!

Due to the condition of the roads, very few people venture beyond Ponta Mamoli. There is an 11km section of donga-riddled tar between Mamoli and the little settlement of Zitundu. After which you turn right onto a rutted sand track. This track eventually leads to Catembe, across the bay from Maputo. After 30km drive you will arrive at the gate of the Reserva Especial de Maputo, or Maputo Elephant Reserve. It takes at least three hours to drive through the Maputo Elephant Reserve. You need to drive through this reserve to get to the Santa Maria Peninsula and Ponta Torres, 68km away. There are thousands of butterflies; most likely of the Neptis family, at Ponta Torres. During the 1970’s, a lot of game was relocated there from the Umfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa, but Mozambique’s ensuing civil war obliterated everything except a very small population of elephants A 2006 aerial survey counted 330 elephants, but they are not easy to spot as they view humans as the enemy and in 2007 elephants caused substantial damage to vehicles within the reserve. An entry fee of R70 per person and an additional R70 per the vehicle allows you into the reserve and all you have to do is follow the only road through the reserve. There is a possibility of spotting an elephant making its stately way through the reeds before he is swallowed up by the landscape as if he was never there.

Ponta Torres is the end of the road and if you really want to go there you have to endure endless, bone-jarring kilometres of unimaginably horrible roads. The kingfish there are rumoured to he some of the liveliest in Mozambique. The Ponta Torres Camp, has a surprisingly comfortable assortment of self-catering, air-conditioned chalets and en-suite safari tents. It’s only a five-minute walk from the infamous Hell’s Gate – the narrow, angry stretch of volatile water between Inhaca Island and the Santa Maria Peninsula.

On one side is the deceptively placid Bay of Maputo and on the other the roaring Indian Ocean.

There’s nowhere else to go now except back the way you came.

Visit Mozambique Africa for more information.

An Excellent Suspense Thriller

I must admit there aren’t too many books that really grab my attention and keep hold of it all the way to the end. The Cold Kiss is an exception.

Nate and his pregnant girlfriend Sara leave Minnesota and plan to drive to Reno to get married and start a new life. They are both trying to forget their past lives and begin new ones.

When Nate and Sara stop at a diner, they noticed a man who had a terrible cough. As they were leaving the diner, the man confronted them and offered to pay $500 for a ride. Nate did not want to take the man in the car but Sara’s eyes lit up when she started thinking about what she could do with $500. So, against Nate’s judgment, they agreed to take Syl in their car. It started snowing.

Along the way, Syl sounded deathly sick with his constant coughing and even at times spitting up blood. The snowstorm got worse and Nate pulled into a motel. At first it didn’t look like the motel was open. When Nate turned to look at Syl, he believed he was dead in the backseat.

It turns out that Syl’s suitcase was filled with money – two million dollars. Nate decided to let Syl’s body outside by the snowdrifts. All he could think about was all that money. He and Sara could start a new life and have everything they ever wanted.

Inside the motel, Nate and Sara meet other people who are staying there. Things become very complicated when others find out about Syl and the money. We all know what happens with greed. In fact, there is an old saying “money is the root of all evil”.

What do Sara and Nate do with the money?

The Cold Kiss is filled with twists and turns. The plot might not be entirely new but John Rector really knows how to work through things to keep you in the dark. I just could not wait to turn the next page. This book has it all – a seedy motel, unusual characters and lots of suspense. John Rector does an excellent job of painting descriptions of the characters where the reader could envision them.

And… wait until you get to the ending. I read this on my Kindle and kept trying to turn to the next page but to my surprise there were no more pages to the book. That’s all I’m going to say. Maybe this was done on purpose because there will be a sequel. I sure hope so!

The Benefits Of Staying In A Motel

We have all heard of all the bad publicity that motels are receiving these days. Aside from complaints about them being unclean, sometimes smelly, and often pest-ridden, the safety of guests has always been a cause for concern. With some motel rooms being turned into meth labs and the highly publicized incidents of break-ins, burglaries, and other criminal activities in motel rooms in various parts of the country, travelers are often apprehensive when they face the prospect of checking in at a motel.

However, these incidents, while true, do not reflect the general condition of staying in a motel. Spawned mostly by Hollywood suspense thrillers and horror movies, these urban legends are mostly that – urban legends – and do not really outweigh the advantages of staying in a motel. Below are some of the benefits of choosing a motel over any other accommodation while you are on a vacation:

Motel room rates are generally cheaper compared to the rates of hotel room accommodations. If you are a budget traveler and all you need a lodging for is a place to sleep, then motels are the perfect places for you. You get to stretch your dollar for other worthwhile activities while on vacation.

Motels are smaller and more comfortable establishments. With lesser rooms compared to hotels, they are generally more quiet places to stay in. And since the guests are fewer, the staff can give more personalized service to each guest.

A motel is generally very accessible compared to hotels where you have to enter a lobby, walk endless corridors, and ride in an elevator before you can finally get to your room. Some motel rooms even open to your own garage, enabling you to access your vehicle easily and look out for it from your bedroom window.

While you can find no expensive shampoos and other “ritzy” stuff, most motels do have a coffee and tea maker and a refrigerator, which you can use during your stay. This allows you to save on food expenses while on vacation.

While not every motel allows pets in the house, most do. This allows you to bring your pet-friend with you during your vacation.

With all these benefits, there is no reason why you should think twice about staying in a motel while on a vacation. As long as you practice caution and you select the right motel, you can enjoy all the above mentioned benefits without all the disadvantages.
