The Mental Health of Families That Have a Child With a Disability: 10 Things That Make a Difference

There is a lot of information and activities designed to increase awareness and understanding of mental health issues and to reduce the stigma that often goes along with it.

What about the mental health of families that have a child with a disability?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

Your mental health is affected by numerous factors from your daily life, including the stress of balancing work with your health and relationships.” (Canadian Mental Health Association)

While most parents will say that their child has brought tremendous joy to their lives, it is no secret that the responsibility of having a child with a disability is way beyond the normal stresses of everyday life.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of speaking to many parents. Overwhelmed, exhausted, isolated, afraid, anxious, worried, sad, stressed, upset, angry, frustrated, drained, weakened and shattered are but a few emotions that parents say the experience each and every day.

There are options which provide families with a short break such home support and respite programs however the funding for these programs is relatively minimal compared to the number of hours that parents devote to the care of their child.

Lack of sleep, frequent visits to the doctor or hospital, interrupted careers, strained relationships, dropped friendships, and financial pressure are all examples of the constant and non-stop stress that a family goes through.

Not to mention the attitudinal barriers that families encounter in places at school, the playground, the hospital, the restaurant, the sports team and the list goes on.

Furthermore, parents are not very good at asking for help. In her book, Daring Greatly, Dr. Brené Brown states that “going it alone is a value we hold in high esteem in our culture.” She also states that “For some reason we attach judgment to receiving help.” I know that my husband and I were reluctant to receive help when it was initially offered and yet looking back, there was absolutely no way we could have done it without the support from our family, friends and funded assistance.

We are informed about the destructive effects on our health from sleep deprivation, chronic stress and secondary traumatic stress disorder as it relates to people on shift work and professional caregivers however we do not ever hear about the devastating effects on families that have a child with a disability.

The Mayo Clinic explains that the long-term effects of chronic stress can disrupt almost all your body’s processes. This increases the risk of many health problems, including, anxiety, depression, digestive problems, headaches, heart disease, sleep problems, weight gain and memory and concentration impairment.

What can be done to preserve the mental health of families that have a child with a disability?

There are many suggestions for families like exercise, joining a support group, taking time for yourself, recognizing that you’re not alone, learning more about the disability, seek counselling and so on, however there is not a lot about how others can take action.

I remember when the Director of Eric’s preschool expressed her concerned for me when he would be sick and not able to attend. She realized that her staff could assist one another on the days that he was at school however she recognized how challenging it was for me on my own when he was home. She wrote a letter to our local government office to request that the funding provided for his support at school be flexible so that if he was too ill to attend, the staff person could come to our home and provide assistance to me. This was approved and it was extremely helpful to me and to my mental health.

Another time, a nurse who came to our house once a week took a chance and contacted a local funding administrator and voiced that she was very concerned about us and that we should have more help in our home. By doing so, she put her own job in jeopardy however she felt that expressing her concern for our mental health was more important.

It will take a long time for governments and human services systems to transform. As a matter of fact, families say that its dealing with these systems that can cause the most stress.

Here are 10 things that you can do:

  • Find a way to truly understand the family perspective
  • Communicate in a manner that is welcoming and friendly
  • Put aside your own bias and act without judgment
  • Think differently, beyond the status quo
  • Take action and try something new
  • Put families ahead of rules and regulations
  • Ensure that families are a priority in policy development
  • Include families as equal partners in decision-making and program development
  • Take a break when you are fatigued or feel unaffected
  • Be sincere, genuine, real and authentic

It’s the small gestures that are helpful and you can make a difference.

Mental Health and Development in Africa: Emerging Dimensions in Care

We yearn to survive, to feel secure, to find pleasure, and overcome pain from the day from birth.

There are specific needs that must be met thereafter, such as food, water, medicine, social and professional support, renewable environment resources, and continuously access them.

Since they are survival, security, social, pleasure needs, we realize the right to access them, and the responsibility and duty to work towards their realization.

When these rights are not protected and defended at most critical time, the affected individual gets overwhelmed to levels when he or she cannot cope, which subsequently disrupts rational judgement, ability to negotiate passage, and appropriately work towards a much desired future good. The hope, belief, and abilities simply fade away.

As a consequence, the distressful dependency syndrome sets in and proves very costly to the family, community, and country. Of course, once the challenge is not managed, it overwhelms families or spreads fast to destabilize the country, and even the world.

Without critical interventions to address rising and fast spreading vulnerability to mental disorders, the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, spiritual and environmental connections with sufferers are impaired to levels of no return, depending on how soon they intervene and elicit favorable response from managed cases.

The hovering and sky-high challenges are absence of mental health on the development agenda, negligence, limited leadership, and lack of financial resources to resolve long-term trauma in the problem, arising from more than a decade of abuse and deprivation caused by selfish human cultures and antisocial systems of governance.

Unfortunately, it is the impaired person, who has the first level motivation and responsibility to turn around his or her future and live well.

There are specific references given to mental cases, some of which have physical, cultural, and social, and spiritual origins. This gives chance for illnesses to grow and influence new others, until total mess breakdown family, society, institutions, cultures, and nation. The dreadful impact can be far-reaching.

But, then, each of these cases ought to be addressed separately in new environments, step-by-step, and basing on the principle of cause-effect relationship, or by searching for cases that lead to others. This way, healing process begins to take shape, until the point when he or she relearns to deal with the old environment and develops healthy coping mechanism. The objective at this time is for him or her to solve personal problems, make good choices, develop goals and attain them, even when he or she finally returns to the old environment.

The hybrid development agenda presents the creation of a mental health infrastructure that creates contact with vulnerable groups based on family and friendship values, to assess cases, pool resources, and design case-specific therapeutic programs to support recovery.

Meanwhile, arrangements are made by supporting team of therapists to pool resources, build sources of strength for clients to cope and exercise resilience when faced with auto-recycled past-life, as blindspots continuously open up and clear away naturally. At this point in time, a person is able to reconcile with his or her past and overcome obstacles to expressing and obtaining needs of life for healthy growth and development.

The assessments and interventions are able to spot unmet needs in a given development phase of life; facilitate desensitization, unlearning of self-harming habits, modeling new views of life and behaviors, restructuring the unhealthy mental attachments and images, processing new conscious and healthy thought patterns, forming new values, and directing emotions to news views and behaviors, until they settle with and be guided by the new person.

Further interventions provide natural and learned means of negotiating access to natural needs and rights, enable adoption of healthy social and environmental constructs, support training in social-health living (expressing and realizing their needs and rights).

Mentors are identified, trained or briefed, teamed with recovering person to support change, until he or she ably fixes most of the burdens of life without help, express desires in most appropriate ways, seek assistance under extreme cases, accomplish tasks they set out to do, become responsible to themselves and society, and work without supervision to achieve lifetime aspirations. This approach corrects ailments from inception and during administration of diverge therapeutic measures. The family, neighborhood, and country benefit very much from the same healing processes and impact of interventions.

In addition, there are initiatives on developing and managing digital tools for effective management of mental health challenges in Africa, where at least 2 in 5 individuals in every family suffer from some form of destabilizing mental disorder, arising from history of abuse and socioeconomic deprivation. This will save families 6 people per homestead from degenerative mental disorders, neighborhoods with up to 100,000 people, and over 40 million others from flattened emotions, retardation, and unresponsiveness to sustained search for social wellbeing, decent livelihoods, stability of families, and social harmony, and sustainable peace.

In doing so, the developed mental infrastructure will enable supported person to survive modern-day predispositions to mental problems, transform vulnerability to physical health problems, resolve social disorders, and support realization of sustainable mental wellbeing, productive living, secure future, happy families, and peaceful neighborhoods, even when conditions are most challenging.

This perspectives managing mental health challenges to boost growth and development present mental wellbeing as the beginning and an end to failing healthcare system in Africa and around the world and, therefore, it is ideal to prioritized it and foster sustainable wellbeing, human security, and peace.

Mental Health – Depression

The early stage of depression is very important. Most people quietly suffer depression and are never diagnosed, while some treat themselves without them knowing by adjusting to nature and exploring their chances of hope.

We all feel depressed sometimes but get well over time. After all, being sad is a part of living, we can’t all have it good all the time.

Depression is an illness that affects both the mental state and mind. It affects the way you feel and think, increasing your thought of hopelessness and sadness.

The majority of people will suffer from depression at least once in their lifetime, this could be from grief, stress or illness which can lead from mild depression to severe depression.

What causes depression:

50 Percent US Kids With Mental Health Conditions Remain Untreated, Claims Study

Half of the children in the United States suffering from any kind of mental disorder remain untreated, revealed a recently published study. The researchers analyzed data gathered from the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, a nationwide survey administered to the parents of young adolescents.

The findings revealed that out of the 46.6 million youngsters in the age group of 6 to 18 years, whose parents filled the survey, around 7.7 million teens were suffering from at least one type of mental health issue like anxiety, depression, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Also, a year before this survey was conducted, only half of these children received counselling or any kind of treatment offered by a mental health provider.

The survey further showed that the percentage of young teens diagnosed with a mental health disorder and not receiving any treatment from a provider fluctuated extensively between 72.2 percent in North Carolina and 29.5 percent in the District of Columbia. The findings featured in the journal JAMA Pediatrics in February 2019.

What do child and adolescent psychiatrists have to say?

Co- author Mark Peterson, an associate professor at the Michigan University (Medicine) said that he pondered upon the conditions affecting children at a young age in a comprehensive manner. But he was shocked to see such a high percentage of young teens not receiving mental health treatment in the U.S.

However, child psychiatrists did not seem too surprised with the results. Dr. Barbara Robles-Ramamurthy, an adolescent and child psychiatrist at the Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center, San Antonio, said that unfortunately, this was not news to her. In fact, she was well-versed with the fact that the percentage of young teens with mental illness who remained untreated in the U.S. was quite high.

Explaining further, Dr. Jennifer Mautone, a consulting psychiatrist at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said that the families and the children with mental illness face a number of challenges when it came to accessing mental health treatment services, thus contributing to the high rates of not receiving treatment.

Extreme dearth of mental health providers

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) revealed that the United States was facing an extreme dearth of practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists. According to the available data, there were fewer than 17 health care providers per 100,000 teenagers.

This indicates that a lot of families needed to wait long to receive treatment, which deteriorated the primary mental health condition of the affected child. Also the qualified providers available faced significant challenges while interacting with other existing systems responsible for the care of these children. Some of these systems included the health care, education, child care, and the adolescent judicial system. All these systems were supposed to take care of the child, but none of them interacted with each other, resulting in half-hearted care.

A ray of hope

A lot of pediatric health systems have started integrating mental health services into their practice, to promote timely intervention of mental health services to kids. Even the mental health providers, by integrating themselves with the pediatricians, leverage the already prevalent trust factor of patients and are able to reach out to families in a familiar setting. One such program was the Healthy Minds, Healthy Kids Initiative at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, headed by Dr. Mautone.

In the last two years, this initiative managed to cater to more than 2,500 patients. Robles-Ramamurthy, considered this as a positive breakthrough. Yet there is a lot more to be achieved, she feels. A lot of families still consider the presence of a mental illness in their family as a personal failure and are scared of addressing them because of the fear of the associated stigma. The work towards destigmatizing mental illnesses has really started only a decade back. Another hurdle that the parents face is insurance cover. Some of the teens are covered, while others are not covered adequately.

Teen mental health treatment at ADEONA Healthcare

Mental illnesses, when untreated in young adolescents, pose serious threats to the community, including unemployment, poor performance in school and life in general, and high suicide rates. At ADEONA Healthcare of Rancho San Diego, adolescents aged 12 to 17 receive comprehensive behavioral treatment programs for mental disorders and related issues. The facility offers a combination of individual and group therapies crucial for the successful treatment and recovery from mental disorders.

Talking Mental Health In College- Q & A with Richard Kadison, M.D. of Harvard University

Maria Pascucci, president of Campus Calm, had the opportunity to talk with Richard Kadison, M.D., about why high schools and colleges are seeing a rise in the number of stressed-out students battling mental health problems. Kadison is the chief of the Mental Health Service at Harvard University Health Services and author of College of the Overwhelmed: The Campus Mental Health Crisis and What to Do About It. Kadison has specialized in campus mental health and student mental health treatment throughout his career.

Campus Calm: Why are college campuses seeing a rise in the number of students with mental health issues?

Kadison: There are lots of reasons we’re seeing a rise in the number of students with mental health issues. We’re seeing more students who get diagnosed with serious problems in high school and they’re functioning well enough to get to college. That’s one group. I think there is the millennial group of students with what are described as helicopter parents who hover over them, and basically make decisions for them. You know the old metaphor about teaching people to fish instead of getting them fish. I think there’s a lot of handing out of fish that goes on in high school. Kids are also being shuttled from one activity to another, kind of building their college resume and not having much down time and not really feeling passionate about things.

Campus Calm: How big of a part does the lack of sleep, eating right and exercising play in students being stressed out?

Kadison: The lack of sleep, I think, is a huge issue. College students are sleeping an average of 6 1/2 hours each night and they definitely experience symptoms of sleep deprivation, which screws up their immune systems, impairs their academic functioning and makes them more susceptible to depression and bipolar disorder.

Exercise is another huge issue. There’s good evidence for milder forms of depression, four days of 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise works as well as antidepressant medication. A lot of students get busy, stop exercising and eating healthy, get more depressed, have more difficulty getting their work done, then start stressing out and have more difficulty sleeping. They get into this vicious cycle.

Campus Calm: How much of a part does perfectionism play in the lives of stressed-out students? How does Harvard’s counseling center deal with academic perfectionism amongst students?

Kadison: That’s certainly a big issue here and I would say, most elite schools. I talked to the directors of the other ivies. There are two major thrusts. I would say one is trying to create some balance in students’ lives. They need to take care of themselves. Working all the time is not the best way to live. Having conversations with them about excellence versus perfection and working hard and trying to focus. But no one test, no one course, no one situation is going to make or break your life. Lives take twists and turns that none of us expect.

Number one: you need to learn how to be resilient. Number two: learn some techniques and skills to manage stress because what you have in high school and college isn’t going to change once you get out into the real world.

Campus Calm: Whom do you see more of: overachieving guys or girls? Is it true that women seek help more than young men? Why or why not?

Kadison: In terms of more women seeking care, I think probably that’s because women are more tuned into their emotions. There’s less stigma. I don’t think the numbers are different — it’s just that men aren’t always wise enough to come in to talk to some one about it.

Campus Calm: How do you work to help students find meaningful ways to base their identities beyond grades & awards?

Kadison: That’s exactly the challenge. It’s people figuring out who they are — we all have faults, we all make mistakes and we all do things we wish we hadn’t done. The key is really to get to know yourself, figure out how to accept yourself and do the best that you can. Getting students outwardly focused, again in balance, so that they’re engaged in their community. There’s growing evidence that the more students are doing something to help their community, like working with high school kids, or volunteering somewhere, those students have much more satisfactory experiences in college than students who are completely self-focused. It’s creating an environment where that’s really encouraged and rewarded.

Campus Calm: Do you think that our current academic culture allows kids to learn how to make mistakes and fail safely?

Kadison: Well, I think part of the process is really the education of the whole community. It’s not just the students. We try to do outreach activities and provide consultations to faculty, staff and residential staff. The reality is though, if the culture in the lab is that the professor is in the lab until 3 a.m., and expects everyone else to be there until 3 a.m., that’s not a healthy message for students.

I think mental health advocacy groups are a good idea because students listen to other students more than other professional adults. Having advocacy groups so students can hear that getting depressed in college is nothing to be ashamed of and it’s very treatable if you come and talk to someone about it.

Campus Calm: Is an Ivy League education always the best way to reach success?

Kadison: I think that students can get a great education at any school. There’s students who come here to Harvard and don’t get a great education because it’s a bad fit for them. Being around other bright people who are totally focused on their academics doesn’t help them learn how to create any kind of balance in their lives. That leads to a disappointment.

Campus Calm: So many students see straight A’s and other academic achievements as stepping stones that will lead them to a good college, which will lead them to a good graduate school, then to a good job and, ultimately, a happy life. Does our society put too much emphasis on this one path to happiness and prosperity?

Kadison: As far as students seeing grades as stepping-stones, I think that’s true. There’s some reality in there and it’s also a problem. I think to some degree this is up to the college admissions folks, that leading a balanced life and being engaged in your community is just as important as being successful academically. Doing other things that you feel passionate about.

Establishing Mental Health and COVID Immunity – A Vital Scripture Decoded

“‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD” Lev 27:30.

How is this verse relevant to mental and physical health, particularly regards coronavirus Immunity?

After reading its decoded translation further on, we shall see just how relevant and vital this verse is in defeating COVID.

There is also a practice technique we can use to get started.

But first some clarifying context regards literal ‘church’ tithing and ‘biblical’ tithing – there is a big difference, they are not one and the same, as we shall see. For while many religions refer to the Bible, the Bible is not referring to any religion or rituals.

The Bible, in all its wonderful magnificence, consists of 66 books and 40 authors. An instructional Manual on the science of mind, it presents coded wisdom on how humans can grow and develop spiritually in all aspects of mind/body/soul; volumes of advance knowledge in how to use our mental faculties positively for health, happiness and creativity, to include rapid immune response to coronavirus and foreign antigens entering the body.

Heavily coded, biblical syntax is not presented as ‘reading material’ as such – like a novel — rather as study material for decoding and ultimately lived through the mind/body consciousness for optimal well-being, mental peace and free-flowing exuberant love. Thus, literal interpretation of biblical syntax does not fully serve the evolution of the soul as intended by these divinely inspired authors.

In forgoing scripture study and its content assimilation into consciousness, we ignore opportunity of consciousness development beyond the born-into state of carnal primitive mind, settling instead for soundbites and memory referencing of others’ literal interpretations as opposed to direct revelation through our own Teacher awareness within.

The word Religion comes from the Latin Re-ligare: ligare means to bind, thus adding ‘re’ means to re-join, re-bind or link human and divine, while ‘church’ esoterically translates: mind/body.

No other person can achieve this ‘re-bind’ — of divine experiencing within — for us.

In essence, the nature of God is pure consciousness: instantaneous all-knowing vibrational love-silence which we’re each designed for coming upon through natural meditative means.

Silence is golden, yes, in that, by mind encountering vibrational love-silence it becomes healed, whole: an alchemy of base metal to Gold.

The fact is, at birth, our mental processes are uploaded in carnal conditioning from past lives: the deeper mind is operating under subconscious law. A level of programed soul-noise which has corroded the mind’s mechanisms leaving divine silence with no means through which to reflect within the mind/body physiology; thus, at birth, ability of spiritual discernment is not immediately to hand. This carnal or ‘worldly’ corrosion is known scripturally as the ‘veil’ of spiritual ignorance

In the context of ‘veil’ – causal of divine silence-wisdom being muted — the purpose of the biblical tithe becomes strikingly obvious, as we shall see.

Tithing is not about giving money over to others

Many have been led into believing that tithing is giving over one tenth of our earnings — of accumulated wealth — unto some church or religion. This is totally not true. The Bible’s meaning of tithing is far from giving money over to others in this way.

As clarified earlier, ‘church’ means mind/body. In this context, the word ‘tithe’ has been hugely misinterpreted, presented solely to mean, giving to a physical ‘church’.

Many also use ‘tithe’ and ‘ten percent’ in the same sentence, as two separate actions. The word ‘tithe’ is Hebraic for ‘tenth’ or ten percent. Thus we cannot say we’re tithing ten percent of something. Being one and the same, grammatically speaking, this makes no sense whatsoever.

Tithing, as presented in scripture, is totally not about giving money, goats, grain or physical land over to anyone. There is no ‘commandment’ to this effect. Framing it otherwise is a man-made concept.

So, what is scriptural tithing?

The Bible, as mentioned, is primarily about the science of mind — guidance on how to maximize the mental faculties to their highest potential both spiritually and morally. To this outcome – while allegorically presented — it deals with the integration of subconscious reactive thought patterns, the ‘veil’, the reclamation of dormant consciousness thereby come upon the submerged potential of our Being, biblically referred to as entering the promised land.

Due to this suppressed mental state, man is said to use only a fraction of his full mental/creative potential. This fraction of ‘usable’ mind is understood to be near one tenth thus leaving a valuable resource of ninety percent of consciousness untapped, thereby undeveloped.

At practical level, this controlling tenth dynamic ensures the other nine-tenths of consciousness potential remaining submerged and out of spiritual commission — thus conscious awareness is through the inherited subconscious patterns.

‘Tithing’ is a coded expression for surrender of this ‘in use’ tenth: surrender of the mental processes assimilating the subconscious content under law.

Thus, to expand the conscious capacity of mind — eliminate subconscious content — we must surrender or tithe the controlling subconscious mind-sets and thought patterns held in place by deep residual stress. Tithing thus at another level is also surrendering of stress — the fruits of the lower intellect — to God, in silence meditation.

Surrendering the tenth is symbolic of gaining 0 – completeness — of multiplying 10 to gain 100 thus triggering the law of multiplication. In other words, by surrendering the conscious 10% portion of mind, it increases one hundred fold to 100%, thereby expansion of consciousness and full mental capacity.

So, whether we say 10 or one tenth, doesn’t really matter, for both attract 0: both make one tenth into 10, or 10 into 100 [percent] meaning the fully integrated soul.

By giving within — meditation — we receive within consciousness

Breaking free of this subconscious law [of mind] thus lies in TITHING WITHIN, surrendering the born-into conditioned ego/intellect — the one tenth — thereby redemption of the submerged nine-tents, redemption of soul or, returning prodigal son. To this outcome, tithing is surrendering our stress-dependent mental activity unto inner silence, calm and stillness; which means unconditional non-involvement with our concerns, worries, desires and fears. A letting-go of past, present, future, to include achievements, societal status and expectations.

This is how consciousness receives immediate spiritual blessings, receives ‘release’ from carnal mind bondage, from automatically recurring ‘sin’.

Regular daily meditation develops increased spiritual awareness thereby establishing permanent liberation of soul from the bondage zone of subconscious law.

It becomes obvious now, that, no amount of outer tithing of money, to any person or place, can bring about inner release from the grip of subconscious law, other than inner tithing — of totally letting-go ‘our tenth’ in meditation.

Practice for inner tithing meditation

Sit upright on a comfortable chair. Palms open on lap — eyes gently closed.

Pause momentarily to centre the awareness between the eyebrows. Notice the calm nature of this pause.

Slowly bring this pause awareness to both nostrils. Observe the inflowing and outflowing breath through both nostrils simultaneously.

Watch the nostrils in a detached way.

Let breathing ‘happen’ beyond our conscious doing.

As breathing deepens — reduces in amplitude — transient thoughts will enter the mind. This is normal in meditation. Like the nostrils, simply witness the thoughts neutrally without clicking their links, which ‘clicking’ serves only to re-trigger the ‘veil’ – the one tenth – back into action.

Notice there is a Gap between each though. Widening or deepening this Gap disolves deep residual stress, de-corrodes and purifies the mental mechanisms, thus allowing for transcendental experiencing. The Gap — created by watching nostrils and thoughts — expands awareness into the ever-perfect Present Moment — our means unto health, bliss, natural free-flowing happiness and COVID immunity.

Be patient and know that each meditation – including restarts and pauses — represents further spiritual growth on our soul’s upward journey unto Wholeness, unto eternal Pure Consciousness.

Building from ten to twenty minutes twice daily would be ideal.

Leviticus 27-30 NIV translation: paraphrasing in brackets.

“‘A tithe (surrendering) of everything from the land, (of all our mental concerns) whether grain from the soil (creative thought seeds) or fruit from the trees, (tree of knowledge: all experiences, good and bad) belongs to the LORD (LORD translates LAW, meaning creation comes from the Laws of nature appointed by God); it is holy to the LORD (by transcending the Laws of nature, soul rises unto God consciousness and eternal liberation).

This verse totally relates to meditation and transcendence by means of surrendering the conditioned-ego/intellect unto transcendental silence within.

The Clearest Sign of Mental Health

Am I mentally ill, could be the question? Every healthy person learns to ask such a question, as is the paradox that is health and ill-health.

Now, let’s be crystal clear about what this paradox is about. Let me use myself as an example. The times I have been most unhealthy mentally, emotionally, spiritually, I have lacked something very important – something critical for health. I lacked the capacity to see that I wasn’t healthy, and perhaps others knew it. I’m sure they did. I may have suspected something was wrong, but I would not at that time be able to pinpoint it. Eventually I might, and when I did, I would be on the cusp of recovery.

What is the clearest sign of mental health?

Insight.

It’s like being in mental health inpatient facility. The main indicator psychiatrists are looking for. Can the person perceive reality? Are they delusional? Is there grandeur? Of course, the purpose for admitting people to these hospitals is to give them time and treatment to come back to reality – to receive insight.

It’s a scary individual that does not have insight. Yet, the narcissist is one who seems fine – until you get close to them – but has a major lack of insight. They cannot see a single fault within themselves. And they may only ultimately agree they have something to change when they see there is some advantage coming to them for appearing humble.

Now, this is dangerous; to see yourself as unequivocally superior to others is bad for everyone. You cannot be corrected when you need to be, and others are not acknowledged for the goodness and attributes they have.

The person who has insight, however, sees the faults inside themselves, and they have copious humility to be able to see the wrong, the error, the mistakes they make; that we all make from time to time. They’re not fearful of exposure because they see what is wrong and they see that it is straightforward to attend to it and fix it.

There’s the paradox in all its glory: the one who thinks they’re perfect is unimaginably dangerously imperfect, because they cannot see their fault, yet the one who sees their imperfections might as well be perfect, for human intents and purposes.

If you want to know if you’re healthy, do you have the capacity for honesty?

Can you see what you need to be able to see? Not just for yourself, but for others, too.

Now, we can see that there are maladies of anxiety and depression that express themselves in many ways, but do not manifest in a lack of honesty. Comparatively, mental health is less of an issue, even if there is a lot of pain the person must wrestle with. This is not to say that their mental ill-health is any less important. Indeed, many times people can suffer mental ill-health because someone close to them has had narcissistic impact on them.

People who suffer depression and anxiety can often still have good relationships. Even with comparative mental ill-health they may often operate in such a way that others are benefactors relationally. They may often find ways of loving well despite what they suffer, which is an incredibly inspiring reality.

We see here that good mental health is not just about the struggles we have living our lives; it’s also how we treat other people. A mental health that impacts negatively on other people is of grave concern, because of how people can be damaged. Of course, there is, on the other hand, also the matter of how suicide damages those left behind. That can never be understated.

Or, perhaps we can see it this way: the person who may have no pain but has troubled relationships, and indeed may appear to be happy, even powerful, may be more mentally ill than the person who endures much pain but who serves and loves others to the end of good relationships.

The person who consistently puts others first has better mental health ultimately than the person who has no interest in or capacity for others.

Combating Mental Health And Becoming COVID-Immune – Three Compelling Scriptures

If mental well-being is to flourish healthily, maximally and spiritually, particularly depression during COVID, then our mental paradigms need adapting to incorporate deeper levels of pure mental silence: awareness which facilitates disease-free consciousness and purifying transcendence.

Humanity has evolved beyond ‘copy n paste’ religious belief systems, replaced now with mature independent thinking — integrated souls functioning through spiritually evolved intellects — a level of cosmic consciousness through which the heart ‘sees’, intuits [Reality] beyond falsity.

But, here we must be careful, for, while maybe abandoning formal religion — for whatever reason — is a personal choice, abandoning God is not a choice even if we think we’ve jumped ship; abandoning God is not possible for the reason of evolution and the innumerable laws of nature.

Evolution is a God-appointed process — the Transcendent which created the laws of nature. This Transcendent Power, through the agency of evolution, continues working within each of us, guiding unto more mature perceptions of inner Reality as separate from outer programming. In other words, notwithstanding ‘decision’ of maybe to leave formal religion, God-Force, through evolution, unceasingly works WITHIN everyone for the reunification of the human soul back to God — back to Source AS Spirit Soul. More on evolution further on.

Self-Transcendence – Intuiting The Sacred

Coronavirus has left many intuiting for Sacred Immanence within: self-transcendence in defeating COVID by natural or spiritual means. Intuiting represents divine response to action, to what we can do practically regards COVID and mental health.

More than ever, emergence of spiritual leadership-understanding is called for globally. In this context, at individual level, the Sacred within you needs YOU to create Pure Thought space in our own mental environment thereby grow self-immune consciousness: grow health-emanating stillness whereby antibodies are rapidly forthcoming in establishing, not only a virus-free consciousness going forward, but complete positive mental health by natural means. To this outcome, self-transcendence simply means rising above our worldly affairs – and associated consciousness — in meditation.

At practical level, the shift from human awareness unto Sacred consciousness — unto self-transcendence — involves only attuning our mental compass inward toward the realm of transcendental consciousness in meditation.

Establishing transcendental consciousness ultimately will emerge victorious in defeating COVID, heralding the spiritual-maintenance approach to complete mental / physical health in our own life, and globally going forward.

In establishing transcendental consciousness, esoteric scriptures undoubtedly are the reliable means on developing transcendental consciousness, whereby the born-into animalistic mind standard can undergo change — alchemy from base level ‘DE-pressed’ consciousness to function blissfully or, transcendentally in ‘EX-pressed’ consciousness. Thus, in relieving symptoms of mental low energy or mood fluctuation, the secret lies in the expression of bliss consciousness.

In expanding this mental health theme let us decode three pivotal scriptures which have direct bearing on such matters plus resolution of this pandemic by natural self-immune means.

Luke 9-58 states:

‘Birds have nests, foxes have holes, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lie down and rest’.

This heavily coded sentence is obviously not intended for literal surface interpretation. Unless these ancient words are understood esoterically then their hidden benefit — of building mental health and COVID resilience naturally – is lost at practical level.

‘Birds’ here symbolize Genesis ‘fowl of the air’, they represent lower nature thought patterns: non-soul serving mind-sets which have ‘nested’ in the deeper mind, in the subconscious.

‘Foxes’ symbolize cunningness, divisiveness, selfishness, thus, not wanting to be exposed, they hide in safe places – in fox holes — to deflect detection.

Thus the ‘birds’ — lower thought nature — have built ‘foxholes’ in the deeper mind from where to propagate negativity and low mental energy.

What is ‘son of man’ in relation to ‘birds’ and ‘foxes’?

Luke 9-57 puts it:

“As they went on their way, a man said to Jesus, I will follow you wherever you go”.

‘Following’ biblical Jesus means replicating the symbolism for which the title ‘Jesus’ stands, which is, Ideal or Perfect Soul. In other words, Jesus represents Perfect MIND, the spiritually Enlightened consciousness – the God-given Potential within each of us.

The man in this scripture is symbolism for ‘son of man’, ‘son’ meaning offspring of the mind’s lower nature – ‘man’ symbolizing mind.

So, as divine status can only know Itself through Itself, biblical Jesus is revealing that the man (carnal mind) cannot ‘follow’ Jesus, [Enlightened mind] AS ‘son of man’ into the kingdom of health, happiness and bliss consciousness, that such lower state of mind is not compatible with divine consciousness.

‘Son of man’ represents a subconscious law of lower mind and its non-spiritual dynamic, including ignorance of the source of mental / physical health and COVID Immunity.

‘Son of man’ is symbolism for carry-over programming from previous lives which conditioning is rooted in duality consciousness, in opposites such as good-bad, love-hate, like-dislike, possible-impossible, including negative or depressive attitudes regards healing, health and happiness.

With no capacity for relating spiritually or lovingly, lower nature in principle recognises only ill-health and negativity as opposed to Immutable Truth — inner healing, compassionate, transformative well-being and love-consciousness expression.

Thus the reason ‘son of man’ has nowhere to rest or lie down is because it is not possible to do so: not feasible for lower nature to rest simultaneously in pure consciousness.

Involution — Evolution in Relation to ‘Son of Man’

Humanity exists in cycles of involution / evolution eternally: Spirit descends – involution –into matter, forms the physical body marking the beginning of ‘evolution’ the process back unto Wholeness. In this context, the human soul at birth arrives with a non-spiritually developed intellect, plus five senses of perception set at animalistic standard. We come here with the initial ability of experiencing in carnal sense consciousness only, the involution level THROUGH which we evolve and ascend AS higher consciousness.

Equipped initially in experiencing through animalistic standard of perception, we’re born with a non-discerning intellect which interprets ‘reality’ through conditioned awareness. Thus, like caterpillar-butterfly metamorphosis, evolving out of this son of mortal man cocoon unto eternal Son of God consciousness and beyond, is the purpose of our life on earth. Through this seemingly impossible carnal/cocoon involution, humans become transformed from ‘son of man’ unto Angelic Son of God, thereby further soul evolution unto higher states of Spirit consciousness.

From the involution / evolution perspective we can see that humans must also come to earth with a non-fully developed immune system.

In the context of developing self-immunity – of defeating COVID naturally — meditation without doubt is key and vital.

Ignoring the soul’s yearning for spiritual evolution and optimal mental health is causal of almost all human mental suffering, suffering which has its genesis in residual chronic stress and lack of higher-self-expression.

Until we awaken consciously from this involution slumber, the human soul remains under subconscious law, thus maintaining ‘son of man’ standard in perpetuity: conditioned intellect without ability of spiritual discernment, without Resolute mental awareness. Thus, no place which will give the mind that which intuitively it is seeking, that of eternal bliss-health consciousness now.

Meditation and the Immune System

Stress compromises the immune system, whereas, meditation — by producing greater levels of antibodies to respond to and prevent potential viral attack — produces immunity. Therefore, by establishing transcendental consciousness and a stress-free physiology, regular daily meditation releases mature T-cells, lymphocytes or antibodies from the thymus gland to defend against foreign antigen invasion.

Meditation interrupts the cause cycle of mental dis-ease and mood fluctuation. In this context, bypassing ‘the transcendent present moment’ in meditation is a costly mental health oversight.

The reality is, mental well-being exists already within as potential bliss-consciousness — only needing infusion into the mind. By dissolving residual subconscious stress, meditation expands the mind’s conscious capacity of withstanding ever-deepening bliss-natured silence.

Mind-centring disciplines such as yoga and mantra meditation are invaluable in establishing mental stability, brain coherence and ability of full concentration. Thus, concentration is an OUTCOME of meditation and not a requirement for its practice.

Meditation is seated yoga known as raja (royal) yoga (unity). In this context, silently inner hearing the sacred sound AUM would be an excellent sound vibration for mantra meditation and mental stimulation.

Jesus said: After Judas (son of man / lower-ego) had left (when the fox became exposed):

“Now God’s glory is revealed through him” Luke 13-31

Biblical translation: when ‘son of man’ standard becomes surrendered in meditation, higher mind (‘him’) ascends unto ‘Son of God’ — awakened to the Sacred within. ‘Son of God’ is a biblical title given unto souls who, through inner meditative means, have conquered Goliath – ‘son of man’ within — thereby redemption, salvation or, transcendence of human soul unto transcendental eternal consciousness.

Thus the Light which rids ‘son of man’ darkness — de-pressed consciousness — readily establishes bliss-mental-health-consciousness, to include natural immunity to COVID.
