In the twilight of my years I often remember a simpler time when life moved slower with peace and grace. Many a day I often strolled along the shore path of the lake I called home for so many summers when I was young. There in the peace of the morning when the sun first began to shine it’s warmth upon to cool still waters I often notice this lone slow swimmer. From a short distance from the path I was on this gentle figure whose slender grace poised a most breathtaking sight. The beauty of her figure matched the ease of her tempo for her rhythm was like gentle waltz. Her gentle sway as she swam was like the rolling waves that rolled on in. Her locomotion moved me to a completely different reality.

This beautiful slow swimmer whose beauty and grace for many a morning we caught each others eye as she gently swam on. Soon we became familiar sights, me on the path, she swimming on by, for now she even stopped and waved, tempting me to join on in. As I stood speechless as she swam by I could tell she wanted me to join her, and the next morning I did. I will never forget that summer. That one summer where for four weeks every morn at half past ten we swam together, poetry in motion gliding through the gentle waves. Afterwards we’d rest on a nearby pier and a friendship was forged, but nothing more.

When summer was over we said our good-byes. I was hoping that next summer we could resume our friendship and our morning swim. All through that winter I was hoping for more. When the next summer finally came I’d run down to the lake and jumped on in for at half past ten, hoping to see my slow swimmer once again. I stood there waiting, the water still cool. I kept looking but she didn’t come. A sadness came over me as the clouds came rolling in. I started to swim along the shore again but, this time it was different the loneliness set in. I thought to myself afterwards maybe it was meant to be a once in a lifetime encounter with my mermaid of the lake.

It has been over 50 years since those wondrous days and a long time since I was back down by the lake. But, through all the years I still remember with great fondness the fun we shared. I did find out some years later that my slow swimmer had moved far away and was never able to come back to the lake. But the memory of that one summer has stayed through all these years. I just can’t help thinking what could have been if my slow simmer had come back and at half past ten we’d swim again.

As the years have flown by memories do come back. A kaleidoscope of images flashes now and again. The times of my life where moments of joy as well as sorrow fills my conscious thought. But, none so clear as that one summer where my mermaid by the lake held me captive every morn for at half past ten we’d swim again. Of all the times where I yearned for romance that mermaid by the lake the friendship we’d shared made her memory so sweet and dear.

Now, that another summer fast approaches though I am a thousand miles from that lake I still partake of a morning swim at a half past ten where the water is more suited to my aging frame. I still think of the time of that one summer where the gentle clear cool waters invited us to have such sweet tender moments that bring back such fond memories of the times I cherish where my slow swimmer, the mermaid of the lake and I glided through those cool clear waters.

Lake turnover is an interesting phenomenon typical of most lakes that experience winter ice-over conditions. The best fly fishing lakes in the Kamloops area are no exception.

There are two times during the year that small lakes experience “turnover”, in the spring and in the fall. In most cases, it’s the spring turnover that is of most interest to the fly fishermen who are dying to get going with their season.

So what is Lake Turnover?

Lake turnover usually occurs 1-2 weeks after the ice comes off the lake in the spring. The sun melts the ice and warms the surface water until it eventually reaches it’s most dense state st 4C (39F). This most dense or heavier water now follows the laws of physics and wants to sink to the bottom. As it begins to sink it displaces the less dense water below causing a complete flip-flop of the water column in the lake.

In the fall, lake turnover occurs before a lake freezes over. The air cools the upper layer until it reaches it’s most dense state and then drops to the bottom. The lake then continues to lose heat and as the temperature dictates, the lake finally freezes over.

Why is this of concern?

In both cases “the turnover”, combined with wind, is natures way of re-oxygenating the water. Both winter and summer seasons induce layering of water creating temperature bands (called thermocline). This lack of oxygen can be determinant to fish and in many cases causes winter kill or summer kill of the fish. The mixing of the water created by the turnover and those welcomed spring and fall winds, re-oxygenate the water to healthy levels critical to fish survival.

Turnover is quite an event for the body of water in which it occurs. It stirs up the lake bottom creating floating decayed vegetative debris and drastically increases the turbidity of the water. Oxygen levels decrease for a short period and the fish usually turn off from feeding. This event usually last from 1-2 weeks, depending on the wind. When the turn is done, the oxygen levels rise quickly and the fish, god bless them, get hungry and start to feed again.

So, if you come across a lake in the spring that looks dirty and full of debris, take note and get the heck out of there because you will most likely be wasting your time. Go back there in a couple of weeks and you may enjoy some of the best fishing of the season.

Being home to some of the most unique and beautiful terrains in all of England certainly qualifies the Lake District as inspiring countryside. It is no wonder then that the region has also become famous for attracting the dreamers and writers that have become known as the lake poets. The term refers to a group of poets that lived in the Lake District at the turn of the nineteenth century. Although they were known collectively as part of the Romantic movement of literature, the poets of the Lake District didn’t follow any particular school of thought or literary style that was known at the time they were writing. All were simply drawn to and inspired by the beauty of the lakes and fells that surrounded them.

Although the work of the Lake Poets was officially shunned and widely criticized by entities like the Edinburgh Review, several have become very widely respected. The most notable of these would most likely be William Wordsworth, who was one of the few to be born in the region, just a few miles from Bassenthwaite. Although he departed the region for an extended trip to Germany with friend and fellow poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge at the end of 1798, Wordsworth eventually returned to the Lakes along with his sister Dorothy and wife Sara, and settled at Grasmere.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, famed composer of Rime of The Ancient Mariner is also considered one of the Lake Poets, and consequently lived only ten miles away from Wordsworth at Greta Hall in Keswick. Despite the peace and serenity of the surrounding fells and moors, Coleridge met with much strife following his establishment at the Lakes. Marital problems, an unfortunate addiction to opium and frequent illness troubled the poet, eventually leading to his composition of the poem Dejection: An Ode.

Besides being one of the Lake Poets, native Englishman Robert Southey was also a writer of essays and letter, a biographer and historian, and a general literary scholar. He is most famous for being named as Britain’s poet laureate in 1813, a title he held until his death 30 years later, and for the lives and accomplishments of historical figures like John Bunyan, John Wesley, William Cowper, Oliver Cromwell and Horatio Nelson. The biographies of several of the previously mentioned men are still in print today. Although sometimes forgotten in the brighter fame of his lakeside cohorts, Southey made immense contributions to Romantic literature, and is the originator of the Goldilocks tale, or Story of the Three Bears, which is beloved by children all over the world.

Lake Nipissing is known as one of the best fishing lakes in all of Ontario. Due to its large size and relatively shallow depth it offers a very strong and diverse fishery. The most popular fish species targeted by anglers are Walleye (Pickerel), Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass and Muskies (Muskellunge). Each of these fish species will be attracted to different lures, bait and presentations so it’s important to be aware of their preferences.

Walleye is generally the most popular and sought after fish in Ontario. Many fishermen are attracted to the challenge of catching them and the enjoyment of eating them. Walleye have particularly good vision in low light conditions due to a variation in the structure of their eyes. Their eyesight advantage also extends to rough or stained water conditions giving them a significant advantage over their prey. Walleye are especially active in low-light conditions which makes a dusk fishing trip your best chance for success. Walleye also can see well in deeper water and can be found there, especially during the warmer summer season. Some of the best Walleye spots are in South Bay and along the south shore of Lake Nipissing. Lure and bait selection can vary widely but a simple jig with live bait is often the best strategy for most fishermen. Your success with Walleye will often have more to do with the local conditions than anything related to tackle selection. Walleye are cautious fish and are famous for taking a little nibble before attacking their prey. It’s important to hesitate just a little before setting the hook.

Northern Pike are plentiful in Lake Nipissing and generally fun to catch. They prefer shallow, weedy areas as well as cold, clear rocky waters. Fishing for Pike from shore can often be quite effective, especially in springtime. Quite often the first fish ever caught by a beginner will be a Northern Pike. All Pike are ambush predators but especially the small and medium sizes ones as the larger ones do not generally have much to fear. They can wait motionless for a very long time waiting for their prey. They body shape allows them to strike extremely quickly and fishermen generally will have no trouble recognizing a bite. Larger Pike can be caught with dead fish as bait although many fishermen still prefer trolling with various lures and live bait. This technique often works better in the summer and fall when the Pike will seek out deeper waters and locations that provide more cover. The natural structure of Lake Nipissing provides many shallow, weedy areas mixed with rocky islands and as a result is nearly perfect for fishermen targeting Northern Pike. Muskellunge are quite similar to Northern Pike and exhibit many of the same preferences and hunting patterns. Both Northern Pike and Muskellunge make for great trophy fishing.

Lake Nipissing also provides a great habitat for Smallmouth Bass. Smallmouth Bass are generally a fun fish to catch as they often put up a good fight highlighted with some aerial acrobatics as they reach the surface. Many different types of lures and bait will lead to success catching Smallmouth Bass including crankbaits, jigs and spinnerbaits. Smallmouth Bass generally prefer cooler water and are often found in rocky areas or near sandy bottoms of which Lake Nipissing has many.

As early as 2009, 3 years before Fox Lake adopted the 230 ILCS 40 (code for the new video gaming laws), Ed Bender, the then Fox Lake Mayor had seen both sides of the coin regarding the video gaming act. If enacted, he said it might bring the town a bad reputation but at the same time, perhaps it would also attract video gaming enthusiasts from neighboring towns and states where video gambling was illegal. Today, seven years later, video gambling has done more good than harm for Fox Lake and its community. And true to his words, many businesses have sprung up back to their feet. Business data shows that the enactment of this legislation has been good for the whole of Illinois and more local governments are adopting this new law.

By 2012, Fox Lake was waiting for the Illinois Gaming Board to finalize its regulations for the state-run video gaming network so that qualifying business people in the village could apply for their video gaming licenses. Thus, Fox Lake is one of the towns in Illinois that adopted the new video gaming regulations as soon as the law was enacted. How has this affected business in Fox Lake? Many proprietors say they have benefited greatly as we will see later in this article.

At the time, many people thought it was good news – they were right

In 2008, the Illinois smoking ban had gone into effect and it had affected many businesses, with some tavern owners reporting up to 30% less business. However, there was a silver lining in the cloud with the enactment of the 230 ILCS 40 because it would bring back business and compensate the owners for the business they had lost since the smoking ban went into effect.

In a board meeting involving business people and Fox Lake leaders, 10 business people asked the leaders to vote in favor of adopting the new video gaming laws.

But the laws were not accepted from the word go without opposition. Mike Behan, the then Police Chief for Fox Lake had written to the board showing his concerns about the intended adoption of the law. Among his concerns was that legalized video gambling would cause more alcoholism, financial problems in the local families and drunken driving. He was also fearing an increase in embezzlement and fraud cases but he did say that the police would consent to whatever the board voted for.

So, after the adoption of the new video gaming law of Illinois in 2012, has Chief Mike Behan been proved right or has the former mayor been vindicated by an increase in business? All of the evidence available points to the latter. You can confidently conclude that the Fox Lake adoption of the new Illinois video gambling laws was well advised and that it has brought more financial benefits than harm to the locals.

October 2012 to October 2013

The state of Illinois passed the law legalizing video gambling in 2009. Under the new law, fraternal organizations, truck stops, bars, veterans groups and restaurants could set up to 5 terminals in their establishments. They would however have to get a license for each terminal from the Illinois Gaming Board. From 2009, it took a further three years to streamline the regulation but when everything fell into place, Fox Lake was one of the first places to get on the state-run video gaming network, in 2012.

In the first year of approving video gambling licenses in the suburb, the city officials had only budgeted for $12,000 but to their pleasant surprise, the amount of money that video gaming raked in for them was many times more than that, at a handsome $93,338. This revenue was used for funding the Pace Bus program and since then, video gaming revenue has been directed to huge improvements in the village. For a small place like Fox Lake to earn more than $90K in the first year of operation, it shows that there is a lot of potential in video gambling and that is what prompted the licensing authorities to license more establishments to host video gaming terminals.

Hidden Point Bar & Grill offers video poker from its three video gambling terminals. This is in accompaniment to some of the tastiest Mexican pork tacos that you will ever taste in the world. The total amount of money won at these three terminals comes up to more than $1.5 million.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that the 2012 decision to allow Fox Lake to get on the state-run video gaming network was a good decision for all parties involved. Business has grown exponentially with some proprietors saying that having video gaming terminals in their establishments saved them from closing down. The local and state governments have also benefitted by getting more revenue to run community programs for the benefit of their citizens. With legalized video gambling in the state of Illinois, more income and better business opportunities have been generated.

Is there a connection between AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and Handsome Lake, the famous spiritual leader of the Seneca tribe? The answer is: quite possibly. The Code of Handsome Lake tells the story of how Handsome Lake, a religious leader and prophet, was himself an alcoholic. In fact, he found himself near death from health-related conditions associated with alcoholism. It was then he had a vision – three visions to be precise. He also said he had been visited by the spirits of John the Baptist, as well as several of Jesus’ disciples.

These visions in 1799 led Handsome Lake to the realization of what was happening to him and his people. The visions saved Handsome Lake’s life. The white man’s “fire water” had taken hold of the Seneca and Iroquois tribes. It wasn’t only those two tribes; the fire water reached out to all the Native American tribes with its influence.

From the days when European settlers first landed, members of Native American tribes essentially had to find a way to co-exist with the foreigners who came and stayed. They traded furs and jewelry, among other items. They traded their land for things the “white man” could offer, such as guns (which made hunting easier but also killing), fabric, different kinds of food, and alcohol, just to name a few. Some of their land they sold to the settlers; some of their land the settlers took.

It was hard for the Native Americans as they began to lose their land . . . and their culture. The alcohol they consumed was a poison to them as they gradually sank into despair and hopelessness at their predicament. Handsome Lake’s visions taught that they should return to their traditional beliefs, which for a time seemed lost to them, while incorporating the good in the Christian beliefs the settlers also brought with them. With Handsome Lake’s guidance and teachings, the Iroquois and other Native American tribes began to rebound from their losses. Handsome Lake’s initiative taught a lesson about learning how to live with the realities, in the best way possible, of their situation.

The connection between AA and Handsome Lake is spiritual. AA began, in its earliest stages, with an assemblage of persons entitled, The Oxford Group. It was a Christian-affiliated association led by a Christian missionary, Dr. Frank Buchman. Some of the principles advocated were: 1) the need to share your “sin” or problem with a fellow citizen who had experienced the same problem; that sharing would be helping; 2) accepting your sin and making restitution for any wrongs committed; 3) having quiet time to listen for God’s guidance; and 4) surrender your past life to God’s will.

After a while, however, The Oxford Group started moving in a different direction, a political direction, even embracing Adolph Hitler.

In 1935, two men, Mr. William (Bill) Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith co-founded today’s AA because they found answers and the help they needed by looking for spiritual guidance. A friend of Bill Wilson’s, Mr. Ebby Thacher, a former drinking partner of Bill’s, became a member of The Oxford Group. When the group began to go astray of its original intended mission, Bill and Bob started their own program to help other alcoholics recover from the debilitating affects of the disease. The program gradually spread by word of mouth and in 2001 listed over two million members.

Both Handsome Lake and AA taught principles grounded in spirituality and religion. Look to God; look to a “higher” divine source as the foundation to build on to extract yourself from the evils of alcoholism.

An amazing resource for economic development, improved livability and outdoor recreational opportunities is still alive in the Northeastern corner of Kent Washington. This fantastic piece of Shangri-La can be found smack dab in the middle of an economically struggling urban environment. The busy Benson Corridor, WA 515, borders it a few blocks to the west. Panther lake is surrounded by palatial estates, middle income housing, manufactured home developments, apartment buildings and commercial establishments. The Panther Lake Great American Casino offering an incredible lunch menu, is the most familiar landmark in the area.

If you have driven the Benson (WA 515) you have passed close to Panther Lake in Kent WA. You can’t see it from the road. If you didn’t know it was there you are in good company. Fifty thousand people live in the surrounding area. Many don’t know it is there. Most people know there is a Panther Lake nearby, that’s all. An old guy whom I met at After 5 Sports Bar near the Panther Lake Safeway told me it is still the best largemouth bass fishing lake in the State. A friend from church claims that no one knows how deep the lake is. He told me that the old timers say there is an impenetrable layer of muck about seven feet down but no one knows beyond that. A young businesswoman laughed when she related a story about going there to smoke pot when she was in High School. Her area has since annexed to Renton. She doesn’t feel connected to The Lake anymore. My son and his friends from Benson Hill Elementary fished from the bank at the State Park entrance at the end of 116th SE. This spring a young man told me a fishing story over breakfast at the Golden Steer restaurant on the Benson at SE 240th. He often fished Panther Lake from a canoe when he attended Meeker Junior High. He quit going because his gear kept getting tangled in the non native lily that dominates the surface. He felt cleanup was a State problem. Since redistricting, his treasured fishing hole is now in the 11th Legislative District and he lived in the 47th Legislative District and didn’t see how he could help in any grass roots activity to Save the Lake even though he only lives a few blocks away.

“Panther Lake will sink into the ground in twenty years” claims Kent Mayor Suzette Cook. What a tragedy, what a disaster. No public official or agency is willing to reach out to protect this precious public asset. I think the political leaders are unable to see the breathtaking splendor dancing before them. They choose instead to look at financial obligations. The State of Washington dumped a natural disaster package that included the stunning jewel of the Benson Corridor on an unsuspecting Boundary Review Board and ultimately on a Municipality. However, there is a much more pressing problem for Panther Lake and the people who canoe, swim, fish, play and breathe air.

Audrey ll was comic relief in Little House of Horrors, but reality is a Noxious non native vegetation ashpyxiating our lake. King County is dedicated to Noxious Weed Prevention. By their definition: Noxious weeds are non-native plants that are highly destructive, competitive and difficult to control or eliminate. Noxious weeds can destroy native plant and animal habitat, damage recreational opportunities, clog waterways, lower land values, and poison humans and animals.

Panther Lake of Kent certainly fits that description but it is not a problem for King County Parks. Who is responsible for the Panther Lake clean up? I’m old, but if we don’t act soon I will live to see the last fingerling flap about in the muck competing for a desperate breath of oxygen. A frightening thought for me and the children of Kent

With the potential of becoming the paragon of city parks, Panther Lake, of Kent WA, remains unknown and neglected. By area, the Panther Lake community is the most multi-ethnic in the world. We must all join in a community effort. We need to form a coalition of citizens from our churches, synagogue, temples, mosques and cultural communities from throughout the Benson Corridor Communities. We need to step forward and demand a life saving clean up of non native lilies from Panther Lake, Kent WA. We need business leaders who influence political policies to step up to the plate in the campaign to Save Panther Lake. The Panther Lake community needs all residents to contribute in the effort to save Panther Lake. Students connected to the Benson Corridor, K-12 through IHL, can gather data, build timelines and help form a plan to save the lake and have fun doing it.

If we work together, our prize can become the centerpiece of Urban Parks and Lakes worldwide. First, we need to eliminate the non native lily that is strangling this active body of water.

Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa amongst a host of other names, is a beautiful lake that is probably the main setting of some marine biologists’ dreams every night. This lake is supposed to be the home of more fish species than that of any other body of freshwater on Earth, which isn’t too surprising once you hear the fact that Lake Malawi is also the eighth largest lake in the world. Nestled in the Great Rift Valley system of East Africa, it is also Africa’s third largest lake.

People have depended for over a thousand years for food from the bountiful wildlife that resides in Lake Malawi, home of over a thousand species of cichlids, and provider of tasty fish such as kampango, a catfish. Many species of fish have evolved from the waters of Lake Malawi, most notably cichlids, and various other animals. Naturally, at least a few extremely exotic species of fish have evolved from these waters, such as the rare Mbuna fish, highly sought after by avid aquarists due to its brilliant coloring. As a result, the lake is not only a huge source of food, but also the source of work for thousands of Malawian fishermen, net and canoe manufacturers, and fish traders. Unfortunately, overfishing and water pollution threatens the potential future of the wildlife here.

Lake Malawi is an attractive tourist location, with most of its tourists visiting during the dry season, which lasts from April to November. The wet season, on the other hand, lasts from December to March. Because the wet season is preceded by a very hot and humid period between November and December, the dry season is the most ideal season for visiting Lake Malawi.

The Malawian government has taken great strides in ensuring that the lake does not become too commercialized or overcrowded, and they have done a good job so far. The northern portion of the lake is largely untouched by tourists, and therefore lies in a pristine, unspoiled condition. The beaches are almost never crowded. One of the main forms of human activity you will see at Lake Malawi will probably be that of the fish traders, who vend thousands upon thousands of silver-colored fish that are dried, smoked, and sold in huts.
