How to Write an Elevator Pitch for Your Book

Writing is a scary old business but of all the scary things about it, perhaps the scariest is getting the concept right.

I mean, you will spend hours, days, years writing the book itself. Getting the characters right. Tweaking your prose. Labouring with the plot. But what if the whole book is just an unsaleable idea? How do you know before you start?

The first thing to say is that you MUST know the market. That means reading a lot of contemporary fiction in your area. If you don’t do that, you won’t know the market, which means you will almost certainly misunderstand what literary agents are looking to take on, which in turn means that your book won’t sell. And why should it? You are creating a product for a market and you haven’t even conducted the basic research.

But you’ve done that, of course. So what next?

To answer that question, you need to understand the way your book will be sold to retailers. It’ll get a one- or half-page entry in the publisher’s catalogue. There’ll be a one page “Advance Information” sheet. And that’s it. The retailer won’t (in general) read the book before they determine their order, so all your loving and crucial work on plot, prose, character and all the rest of it is effectively irrelevant. (Except that you wouldn’t have got that far unless those things were in shape.)

What matters therefore, is the “Elevator Pitch”: the twenty seconds that your publisher’s sales guy will have to pitch your book. Here are examples of pitches that could really work:

TWilight: A teen romance between an ordinary American girl and a boy who is actually a vampire.

The Da Vinci Code: a mystery thriller revolving around the hunt for the Holy Grail.

Wolf Hall: A historical epic revolving around Thomas Cromwell, the most important man in the court of King Henry VIII.

It’s pretty obvious that Dan Brown’s book had a killer premise – and that it was that which effectively sold the book. (It wasn’t his prose style!) It’s less obvious, but equally true that the vast success of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall (a literary novel) also depended on finding a brilliant hook. If Mantel had written effectively the same book about a king / court / period that was less huge in the popular imagination, the book wouldn’t have sold on anything like the same scale. Indeed, none of her previous ones did.

Here are examples of pitches that really don’t work. (These examples are invented, by the way. Books with bad pitches never get published.)

Eco-fantasy for 6-7s: three children go to a fantasy world where they have to save the planet and learn about the importance of recycling and the dangers posed by electro-magnetic radiation.

Chick-lit for self-harmers: Katy is a feisty fashion-loving thirty-year-old who fancies the sexy photographer who freelances for her fashion mag. But Katy is a secret self-harmer whose troubles stem from a difficult childhood.

Non-literary literary fiction: a slightly mediocre book about two somewhat boring people in whose lives nothing much seems to happen.

We honestly get books like these. We really do. So do literary agents. And they’ll never work. If you don’t have an instant, grabbing, easily communicated pitch you could be making a similar kind of mistake. The only way to know: write a pitch for your own book. Does it sound limp or strong? Experiment with different ways of couching it. See if you can add a little edge, something new, something vibrant. Even if you need to change the book to fit that pitch, you need to do it.

Oh, and although I’ve illustrated these points with examples from the world of fiction, they’re equally relevant to authors of non-fiction – or even more so. Especially for subject led non-fiction, you must offer something clear and distinctive to agents and publishers. Why your book? Why your angle? What’s new? What’s special? Your elevator pitch has to answer those questions swiftly and decisively.

Good writing matters. But saleability is essential.

Intellectual Property

Over the course of humanity, every discovery has yielded more questions as we continue to explore new territory. As we continue to explore the frontier known as cyberspace, and discover new ways to use the medium, we are opened up to more ethical dilemmas and questions. Intellectual property has always been a thorny issue. The internet however raises new problems for businesses and individuals seeking to protect their intellectual property. With the easy access to information, protecting your IP is a virtual minefield.

What is Intellectual Property? Intellectual property (IP) is subject matter that is a product of the intellect or mind. The term however, actually refers to the legal entitlements that are attached to intangible ideas, concepts, and certain types of information in their expressed form. In example, a book or movie is the expression of creative and artistic work and Intellectual Property would provide the copyright holder exclusive rights for a period of time to control the reproduction and adaptation of that work. Copyrights, patents, trademarks and industrial designs are all examples of intangible subject matter. An often overlooked intangible is trade secrets. Trade secrets can be protected under Intellectual Property.

Intellectual Property is a valuable business asset which can be leveraged in the marketplace to as a competitive advantage. An IP audit can help you to determine what hidden assets you may have in your business. Many firms will send you an IP audit checklist which has a series of questions designed to uncover valuable business assets. Once you have uncovered your IP, you should take steps to protect it.

Ensure that you own the rights. In today’s world, many businesses outsource functions which are not their core competency. Paying to have something created does not grant you ownership. You may have paid an outside contractor to develop a sophisticated software program, or a graphic designer to revamp your logo or even a writer to develop your marketing collateral. When hiring outside firms to create something for you, you should always use a Work for Hire Agreement. Standard agreements are widely available. A Work for Hire Agreement basically transfers all rights from the creator to the payer.

Don’t forget your employees. Many organizations have their employees sign employment contracts which stipulate that any work created for the company belongs to the company. It is similar to a work for hire agreement with independent contractors in that the rights belong to the organization and not the individual. You are paying the employees to create the work on your behalf.

Protect your inventions. If you have invented a business method, process or other patentable invention you need to take steps to protect it. It is advisable to refrain from selling a patentable invention until you have taken the necessary steps to protect your rights. Filing a patent application is expensive and is something that should be done by an attorney specializing in patent law. If you are a new business, there are interim steps that you can take that will offer you protection until you have the cash to file the patent application. File an Invention Disclosure Document. This document can be purchased for about $10.00 and when filed with the United States Patents & Trademarks Office will protect some of your rights for approximately two years. You can also document your invention in an invention diary or something similar and mail it to yourself via the United States Postal Service. It is important to use the US mail system rather than an outside carrier such as FedEx, or DHL. The post office is a federal agency and will be accepted by the Patents and Trademarks Office. Once you receive the package, do not open it – store it in a safe place until you are ready to take the next steps.

Notify others of your rights. If you have created written works or other information which falls within copyright laws, use the copyright symbol, which is the C within a circle. This can be followed by the year the work was created and your organization’s name. An R within a circle indicates a registered trademark and should not be used unless you have in fact registered the item (i.e. logos, brand name). However, you can use TM (trademark) or SM (service mark) next to your name or logo. This will deter others from stealing your work. Additionally, if your internal or external contractors are creating software for you, have them embed footprints in the code to protect you in the event that someone steals your software. The footprints are identifiable information that can be used to prove that you created the software.

While you want to share your IP with the public to drive business, it is equally important to take the necessary steps to protect this valuable asset.

HughesNet Will Provide Everything Necessary For High Speed Internet

Sometimes an average service just won’t do when it comes to meeting your needs. Take Internet service providers for example. When choosing an Internet service provider in , you can typically choose among broadband digital cable, DSL, and dial up. All of these service have their disadvantages though. Take broadband digital cable for example. With a cable based Internet connection your home or business has to be within the service area of the cable company, and in order to get the broadband Internet service, you’ll probably have to pay for cable TV service as well- regardless of whether or not you want it. Access to DSL isn’t as limited geographically as access to cable is, but it isn’t as fast as broadband digital cable and its speed, availability, and price are largely governed by the phone lines that are used in any given area. Of the three technologies mentioned above, dial up Internet access is easily the most widely available, but it’s so pathetically slow that it’s frustrating for anything more data intensive than text transmission. Even dial up is geographically limited by access to phone lines.

So what do you do if you need high speed Internet service, but the conventional offerings just won’t do? The answer is simple: go with HughesNet high speed Internet service. HughesNet will provide everything else necessary including a special satellite dish that can send as well as receive satellite signals and a special satellite modem.

All of this combines to provide connection speeds of up to 1.5 megabytes per second for homes and up to 2 megabytes per second for businesses. Ralph Earnhardt’s Biography

Ralph Lee Earnhardt was born on 23rd February, 1928 in Kannapolis, Cabarrus County in North Carolina, the youngest of four sons, to John Henderson and Effie Mae Earnhardt. The family were part of the farming community and on leaving school Ralph worked in one of the cotton mills for several years. The wages and conditions were poor and one of the ways to get out of the situation was to race.

During his later teens he began to build cars in the family garage with the intention of racing one on the local dirt tracks eventually starting in 1949. In 1953, at the age of twenty five Ralph turned professional and began his quintessential career, making a huge impression in the world of racing very quickly.

His first race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series took place on the 11th of November, 1956 when he finished second to Speedy Thompson in the Grand National (now the Sprint Cup Series) at Hickory Speedway, North Carolina. Also in 1956, he won his first NASCAR Sportsman title, a year in which he gained 32 victories.

Over his career, he held track championships at seven different venues. 1961 saw Ralph have his highest finish in the Grand National point standings, at 17th, and also saw him filling in for Cotton Owens as a relief driver in the Daytona 500, covering more than 300 miles and finishing in 5th place. His awards include:- Ralph was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 1989, the same weekend that Dale Sr. won the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama, in 1997 and, along with his son Dale Sr., was named as one of NASCAR’s “50 Greatest Drivers”. During the 1998 celebration of NASCAR’s 50th Anniversary, in 2004 Ralph was an inductee in the Oceanside Rotary Club of Daytona Beach Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame and inductee in the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2007.

His son, Dale Sr. later said about the award that he shared with his father, “This has been a very special time for me and for our family. I wish he could have been here to see all of this.” During an interview with Buck Knight of the Free Lance Star, Fredericksburg, Virginia on Friday the 25th of August 1967 Ralph was asked if he would like to drive on the Grand National circuit he replied, “It would be great fun to drive on the super speedways but the Grand National league is a bit rich for my blood – meaning my pocket book. It’s quite different from driving a sportsman car on short tracks but not so great that a man can’t make the switch. The major difference that I found is that on the superspeedways a man has to stay extra cool and extra-wide-awake. No time for easing up, taking a rest”.

In the old days Ralph raced with the old veterans such as Joe Weatherly, Buck Baker and Curtis Turner and many others. “The sport is a lot different than it was in those days, when I was starting out a fellow heard about the races coming up by the grapevine, or by a phone call from a friend or the promoter. Purses were mighty small and now and then a promoter took it on the lam before the pay-off. No-one will ever know what NASCAR has meant to racing, it made a haphazard affair into a business, and brought safety to a game where there was very little if any.”

When asked if he had any thoughts of retiring from NASCAR racing, he replied, “I feel fine and I believe I am driving better than I ever did, I should be, a man learns something every race he drives and I drive three times a week. Ralph had an interest in the up and coming young guns and it was he who started Bobbie Isaacs in the racing business. Ralph provided the guidance that started his son’s career in racing while growing up in southern North Carolina and Dale Sr. from a very early age wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Sadly, Ralph Earnhardt died of a heart attack at his home on the 26th September 1973 at the age of 45. He was found by his wife, Martha, on the kitchen floor not as people like to believe, working on a car in the garage and found by his son, Dale Sr. He left behind his wife, Martha, sons Dale as Dale Sr. and Danny and two daughters, Martha Kay and Kathy Lee. He was the grandfather of Dale Jr, and Kerry Earnhardt.

Movie Review – Out of Bounds (1986)

Out of Bounds

Starring Michael Anthony Hall, Jenny Wright, Jeff Kober, Glynn Turman

Directed by Richard Tuggle

Written by Tony Kayden

The teen flick is the black hole of Hollywood. It swallows up rising actors and directors alike. It entices the young and the old past its inescapable event horizon, forever hungering after fresh blood. The body count is staggering.

Consider Francis Ford Coppola. After masterminding such irrefutable classics as The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and the Godfather sagas, he boldly tackled the teen genre with The Outsiders – and just as boldly fell on his face. Standing again on his own two feet, he summarily slapped the dust off his breeches and proceeded to trip over Rumble Fish (a.k.a. The Godson). Though his second jaunt into the world of adolescent angst was a dangerously moody piece with moments of heartrending beauty, it lacked the consistent genius of his earlier works.

But where Coppola has, for the most part, survived his fall from grace, lesser mortals have been far less fortunate.

Consider Richard Tuggle. After appearing out of nowhere to script Clint Eastwood’s Escape from Alcatraz – his first film, mind you – he quickly went on to both write and direct Tightrope, one of Eastwood’s finest films.

Word spreads quicker through Hollywood than brushfire through the desert, and the word was out: Richard Tuggle is hot.

But “hot” is a relative term. In an industry where accounting statements are long and memories short, you’re only as hot as your last film. After Out of Bounds, Richard Tuggle is about as hot as a political prisoner in a Siberian gulag.

His problems begin with his choice of material. After scripting his first two features himself, he is here working from a screenplay by Tony Kayden, a veteran TV Movie-of-the-Week writer with credits like Fugitive Family and Ambush Murders. The story concerns a midwestern hick (Anthony Michael Hall of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club) who comes to the big city (Los Angeles) and winds up on the run after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit (his brother’s murder). It’s chock-a-block with hand-me-down plotting and moronic dialog meant to convince us that Hall is truly a midwestern hick and co-star Jenny Wright (St. Elmo’s Fire) is truly an urban punk rocker.

Having not written this tripe himself, Tuggle struggles in foreign territory. The direction is limp throughout, as if he couldn’t care less.

The end of the film is downright sloppy. One sequence is particularly incongruous – after spending nearly the entire film tracking down Hall on suspicion of murder, Police Lieutenant Delgado (Glynn Turman) commits a sudden about-face by stating that Hall is now “out there on his own” and needs their help. But it isn’t until the next scene that Delgado gets the evidence proving Hall’s innocence.

It seems someone fell asleep in the editing room.

Out of Bounds is slipshod filmmaking at its worse. Watching Tuggle fall into the miasma of teen flicks – after showing such great promise with Tightrope – is not a pleasant experience.

Though Hollywood film directors are not known for their ascetism (there’s no Saint Francis of Azusa) one certainly wishes Tuggle had striven for art and left his pocketbook behind. He gets to pay the bills with this one, no doubt, but forgets to pay attention – to his audience or his craft.

Bottom line: If you’re in the mood for intelligent entertainment, Out of Bounds is out of the question.

What Is Dojo Kun?

A basic definition of dojo kun is fairly straightforward in the world of martial artsand self-defense. However, there are different ways in which that straightforward definition is applied. This is something that should be kept in mind. It is certainly something you’re going to discover, as you learn the various forms of dojo kun that exist in karate and elsewhere.

Simply put, dojo kun literally translates to the rules of the training hall. Dojo kun is going to refer to the rules that are in place for a particular dojo. The rules for the dojo or training hall can vary from one style or discipline to the next. This is also something that should be kept in mind.

Dojo Kun History And Background

As you might imagine, this “rules concept” is an ancient one. Naturally, as long as there have been dojos and training halls for self-defense arts and martial arts, there have been rules to govern the behavior of all who walk through the front doors.

These rules in essence outline a practitioners behavior. Some schools even make it a point to have everyone in attendance recite the rules of the dojo or training hall at the end of a training session.

In karate specifically, the Shotokan Karate dojo kun is usually credited to Gichin Funakoshi. However, rumors continue to persist that the 18th century Okinawan karate figure Kanga Sakukawa actually created the 5 guiding principles that are found in this area. Most styles use this dojo kun at the end of a session, in order to emphasize the morals and spiritual principles that drive the physical aspects of the training.

If you look over those five rules or pricniples, you’ll notice that the word “hitotsu” begins every single one of them. There’s a reason for that. The word means “first” or “one”, and it is designed to make sure every rule is held in equal esteem. With the Shotokan Karate rules, it’s important for students to understand that no one rule is more important than the other.

The English version of the Shotokan Karate rules offers a clear translation of the values mentioned in the 5 guiding principles. A practitioner will strive to complete and perfect their character, avoid violent behavior, respect others, and more. There is also a considerably shortened version that is utilized by the ISKF and JKA.

The Bottom Line

The dojo kun is an essential part to learning any martial arts or self-defense arts style.
