A Guide to Fly Fishing Reels

Are you wanting to know more about fly fishing reels? Here is some basic information on reels that is sure to satisfy you until your next “casting call.”

Is heavier better?

No, not necessarily. In fact, oftentimes, light fly reels are more expensive and of higher quality. If two reels are the same in all other respects, go with the lighter one. That said, when choosing your fly fishing reel line weight, the most important thing to consider is the weight of your rod and of your line.

These three weights (reel, rod, and line) should be equal and balanced. When you are considering the “weight” of your fly reel, you are not considering how heavy it is, but how well balanced it would be with your rod and reel. When shopping for a good fly fishing set-up, first consider what sort of fish you will be fishing for, find the right weight line to catch them, and then but a rod and reel to match.

Does size really matter?

The larger your spool, the faster your line retrieval can be and the better line handling you will have. Also, you want your fly fishing reel to fit your hand comfortably.

Single and ready to mingle?

Single action fly fishing reels are the most common and also the simplest. For every crank of the handle, you will get one turn of the spool. Single action reels are very easy to maintain. Multiplier fly fishing reels, on the other hand, can retrieve your line faster because for every turn of the handle, you will get two or more turns of the spool. An automatic fly fishing reel is the easiest to use but the hardest to maintain. You simply need to flick a lever to retrieve your line.

Fly fishing is not a drag!

There are a few different types of drag systems that you can choose for your fly fishing reels. Why do you want drag? Because drag applies friction to the spool, helping you in your casting and landing of fish

Spring-and-pawl drag systems is very simple and very affordable. This is a good system for lighter fishing. Look for a spring-and-pawl system with a knob that can increase or decrease your drag tension.

Caliper drag systems are a little bit more expensive. A caliper pad pushes against the braking surface of the spool, creating drag, slowing the spool spin. Be sure that your caliper drag system comes with an exposes palming rim.

Disc drag systems. If you are wanting one of the best and most expensive types of fly fishing reels, then you can go with a disc drag system. With the disc drag, you get increased control and much efficiency. Most agree that if you are fishing for large, powerful, fighting fish, a drag system is best. It will give you the most control and the most consistent drag pressure.

How Should I Light My Kitchen?

Working at the Home Depot in Lighting/Electrical, I am frequently asked this question. Many people are renovating or redesigning the space that has become the central family area these days. Families no longer sit formally at the dining table in a dining room. Today, family members are often coming and going, grabbing snacks, and it isn’t until a basic breakfast, lunch or dinner meal that all may gather and finally sit down together.

Hopefully, the day has not been too frantic and fast food is not an option. Hopefully, someone has created a nice, nourishing meal that all can appreciate. My “Pop Toaster Oven,” cookbook has over 250 quick and healthy meal options for the active family, singles, boomers and elders.

Lighting is key in today’s multitasking, multipurpose kitchens. Task areas need special direct, high-contrast lighting to prepare food, cook food, wash dishes or put dishes in the dishwasher. Track lights with GU10 base halogen bulbs give bright, white light. Also, track light heads can be directed at an angle to work areas. This slanted light is preferable to working under an over head light in one’s shadow.

Dining areas need light that can be dimmed to create a calming mood and coordinate with guest diners, candles, etc. Stylish pendants give the interior decor a boost, give a soft downlight and create pools of light on bars and eat in counters. Dimmers, which are easily installed, not only reduce the wattage used by the lighting fixture, but lengthen the life of the bulb within that fixture! More savings!

Ambient lighting is best for illuminating the entire kitchen space at the flick of a switch. An over head “troffer,” a two to four tube rectangular fluorescent ceiling fixture that is often installed by contractors, provides only overall lighting for a kitchen area.

Recessed lighting cans, available in 6,5, 4 and 3 inch cans with a variety of finishes including brushed nickel, white and bronze, create a beam of downlight that illuminates a given area where the light falls. Although this light is usually high contrast, the distance from where it has been installed to the surface it illuminates changes the strength of the light. Recessed eyeball lights can be positioned to shine on specific areas. New offerings in recessed lighting LED’S guarantee 35,000 hours before you have to get up on a ladder to replace that recessed lighting bulb. That’s a nice option!

Under cabinet lights may be the best-kept secret. Available in Xenon, Halogen, Fluorescent and LED’s, they provide a direct illumination to the counter top work area. Today’s new LED two, three or four light under cabinet fixtures are very slim, provide excellent, high contrast light, have little or no temperature to the bulbs and last for 12,000 hours or more.

Often I find that customers are looking for a brighter overhead light because the lighting in their kitchen is so poor. What they really need is under cabinet to light their counter tops, pendants or recessed lighting to light their bar or eat in counter, or track lighting to direct beams of high contrast light to work areas.

Stove hood lights, often coupled with a vent fan, provide good light for the cooking surface. Many new vent/hood lights offer good, high contrast halogen lighting. Older hood lights that accept a normal screw in medium base bulb, can now be improved by switching to a Bright Light or Daylight Compact Fluorescent bulb, which will last for six years, use much less wattage than a standard bulb and provide more light.

It is well work investigating the lighting options available today in retail stores. Low energy options in CFL’s and LED’s as well as the variety of light spectrum brightnesses they now come in can address the personal needs of each household. Check out those shelves today and be inspired!

How To Get Rid Of Tonsil Stones Quickly And Painlessly

Tonsil stones (also know as tonsilloliths) can be unsightly, painful, and cause severe bad breath. They are stones that are formed on the tonsils from things such as bacteria, keratin, old white blood cells and small pieces of food. There are many natural remedies for removing tonsil stones that you can try at home, some more invasive than others, but all should give some measure of relief. Here are two different methods of removal to get you started.

MANUAL REMOVAL

Manual removal of tonsilloliths can be done with a number of different “tools”. No matter which one you choose they should all be used in the same way. Using either a Popsicle stick, a dampened cotton swab, your finger, or your toothbrush, apply gentle pressure at the base of your tonsils and softly flick upwards. The stones should pop right off, but if they don’t, refrain from using excessive pressure or you may damage something. Once you have coaxed the tonsil stone(s) off they should drop in to your mouth where you can hand remove them or spit them out. Follow the removal of any stones with a gargle either with salt water or an antiseptic mouthwash to take care of any leftover bacteria. You can also try using a dropper to suction the stones off, though this may be more difficult than the other method.

REMOVAL BY REMEDY

If the thought of manual removal doesn’t appeal to you, you may be asking yourself how to remove tonsilloliths without touching your tonsils. There are many homeopathic remedies that you can try, some of which may work better for you than others. One is a salt water gargle. Done several times a day with warm water a salt water gargle can be a great tool in the war against tonsil stones. The salt and the water combined work to dislodge the stones and they should just drop right off. If this doesn’t work, you can try sucking on a hard candy or sucker. The negative pressure caused may work the throat enough to work the stones loose. Finally, try upping your intake of water. The additional swallowing as well as the lubrication should have a positive effect on the stones.

When wondering how to remove tonsil stones, keep in mind that a gentle method is always best. Try the simplest ones first to see if they work, and then move on to the more complex.

3 Beginner Boxing Tips to Learn How to Box

If you’re trying to learn how to box, then you’ve found out for yourself that there aren’t too many people just handing out beginner boxing tips. Additionally, when you’re boxing training at home, you can’t learn from someone else’s example and you certainly don’t have any coaches around. Before you get too frustrated – or worse, too sloppy with your form – learn from these three beginner boxing tips.

1. It all starts in the mirror: Shadow boxing is an integral part of a boxing training workout. Don’t start on the heavy bag until you’re confident that you have down some basic techniques in the mirror. Watching yourself throw punches in the mirror will help you learn the proper form for your feet, legs, arms and body and you’ll be able to instantly spot weaknesses or flaws. Start every one of your boxing training at home sessions with a round or two of shadow boxing.

2. Master the jab: A classic boxing saying is that if you want to be a good fighter, don’t bother with learning how to jab, but if you want to be a great fighter, that’s where you need to begin. The jab is what brings everything together and sets up your other punches. When used correctly it’s both an offensive and defensive weapon. It can be used merely as a distraction or as an impactful weapon all on its own.

To learn the jab, stand in front of a full length mirror in a guarded, ready boxing position. Step forward with your lead foot and at the same time flick your lead arm straight arm. The key to getting the jab done is the succinct nature of the step and the arm movement. As you become comfortable with that, begin stepping quicker and throwing the punch harder.

3. Improve your conditioning: One of the most overlooked beginner boxing tips is that you need to get your conditioning at a higher level. It’s not the most glamorous side of boxing training at home, but it’s absolutely necessary. You can’t learn how to box if you’re too tired to throw a punch or use proper form!

To help improve your conditioning right from the beginning, spend two or three rounds jumping rope at the start and end of every workout. If you don’t have a jump rope, spend the time doing jumping jacks. Additionally, when you’re using the heavy bag keep pushing yourself with a goal for each and every round.

For example, a goal for one round can be to throw nothing less than four punch combinations. A goal for another round can be to throw no less than 200 punches. You’ll keep your body guessing and your conditioning will begin to take off.

When you’re ready to learn how to box, these three beginner boxing tips should be immensely helpful for you and your efforts.

Throw Away The Fax Machine – A Guide To Online Fax

Have you ever felt like throwing the fax machine out the window? Well you may not know it but you can, but not literally please.

There have been services available for some time which allow you to take your fax needs online and save yourself the hassle of wrestling with the fax machine.

Any provider should be able to supply you with a basic fax-to-email service. You are usually assigned your own fax number and any faxes sent to this number are then attached as an image file to an email. That is then delivered to your email account. You will need to keep your fax machine for sending faxes but you can set it to not answer the phone and keep it on your main business line.

Most but not all fax services also provide a facility to send faxes by email, web or straight from the desktop. This feature can be utilised to send invoices or forms to customers without first needing print and then fax the document. Fax-to-email allows you to compose an email to faxnumber@provider.com and attach each document you want to be faxed. You are then notified by email when your fax is complete.

Traditionally to enable your business to fax has meant ordering a separate phone line and number and purchasing a fax machine or fax software for each user. Which is an expensive proposition for a communications channel that is still essential but often rarely used these days. With online fax services these costs are all rolled in to a single monthly fee which is paid to your fax provider. Often this fee is just a fraction of the cost of phone line rental alone. Add the savings in paper and ink and using an online fax service starts to make a lot of sense.

If your customers fax through a lot of forms that you need to process and archive you’ll know how tedious it can be to flick through a whole binder just to find a specific fax. With an online fax service your fax correspondence can be filed along with all your electronic correspondence.

Points to consider when choosing a provider:

  • Do you receive your own dedicated number? Some virtual office providers for example will place you on a shared number and your faxes may be seen by anyone.
  • File formats: Make sure the provider can email you in a format that suits you. Most will send in a common format like PDF but others may use obscure formats that require special software to read.
  • Do they have a method of sending faxes that suits you? Some will offer you a choice of methods; ranging from basic email-to-fax through to desktop clients which will allow you to “print” directly to a fax.
  • Is there an area code that will be local for your customers? Even if you are a regional business you may want to consider a metropolitan fax number if your customers are located there. Remember, you now have the choice.

There are some things to be aware of when switching over to online fax:

The first is that a fax machine makes a copy of a piece of paper and that online faxing makes a copy of an electronic document. You’ll no longer be able to rapidly scribble out a note and fax it anymore. However, you can just as rapidly send a quick memo by email-to-fax or through a fax printer. Filling out a form that has been faxed to you is no longer simple but it can be done by opening the fax in an image editing program and typing with the text tool.

The second caveat is that you may be used to signing almost every fax you send, this is no longer possible as there is no paper stage. The author recommends that if you have access to a scanner you can scan your signature and save it as a black and white image ready to be inserted at the footer of every document you type up.

All in all if you or your staff don’t use the fax machine much, or use it for a lot of repetitive work, then faxing online can save you a lot of money in ink, paper, communications costs and most importantly – productivity. If you can’t give up the routine of walking up to the fax machine with a piece of paper then you might still consider online faxing; but only to receive your faxes. Remember to turn off the auto answer feature of your fax machine.

Catapults, Gears and Pulleys For Your Homeschool Science Curriculum

Simple machines always fascinate me and I’m sure they will fascinate you enough to tell your parents or homeschool teacher to add them to your homeschool curriculum. In the following experiments, I am going to show you how to build some simple machines with household articles.

The following homemade simple machine is a kind of a lever that helps lift a ping pong ball and various heavy objects. I will teach you to build it in no time and to make your homeschool curriculum exciting.

Easy Popsicle Catapult: Place five large sized popsicle sticks one above the other and bind them tightly together by winding rubber bands on both ends. Now bind two large-sized popsicle sticks in the same way but only wind the rubber bands around one end. Pull the free ends of the sticks wide apart in the shape of a “V.”

Now insert the stack of five in between the two sticks forming a V and push it towards the rubber band end, widening the angle of the V. Now secure the intersection with rubber band. Next, place the V on its side so that one arm of the V is resting on the table. On the other arm, glue a cap of a milk jug with the open end up. This cap holds the projectile, which could be a ping pong ball. Just a flick of the catapult’s arm will send the ping pong ball in the air. Have fun!

Gears are wheels having teeth along their rims. These teeth fit into each other so that when force is used to turn one wheel the same force is relayed to the other wheel.

Bottle Cap Gears: Flatten out two bottle caps in such a way that they are round in shape and their edges are still wavy. Now make holes in the center of both and nail them to a wooden board in such a way that their wavy edges are in contact with each other, forming the teeth of the gears. When you rotate one cap, the other will also rotate, but in the opposite direction. This is a cool example of simple gears.

Some gears have wheels of unequal diameters. In such a case, when the larger wheel turns once the smaller wheel turns many times and therefore magnifies the force.

The pulley and belt combination is used in many machines. The belt helps convey power from one pulley to the other. Many vehicles use this mechanism to relay power to all wheels. When pulleys of different sizes are used, torque (driving power) can be traded for speed and vice versa. The following homeschool curriculum experiment that I have designed will help you see how.

Cool Pulley and Belt Mechanism: Find an old roller skate with the wheels protruding from the sides. The new inline models will not work. Place the skate on its side so that it rests on one set of wheels and the other two wheels are facing upwards. Wind a rubber band over these two wheels. You are using the rubber band as a belt. What happens when you rotate one wheel clockwise? Which way does the other wheel rotate?

Now remove the rubber band from one wheel, keeping it still wrapped around the other wheel. Give the rubber band a twist so that it looks like an 8 and put it around the wheel. Now rotate one wheel clockwise. Which way does the other wheel turn? I have now given you a fair idea of how belts are used to make pulleys or wheels turn in the desired direction.

Ball Bearing Experiment: Take a clean paint can without the lid. You will see that after removing the lid there is a rim that is grooved. Now place an old heavy book or a similar object on this groove. Try to turn the book. You will notice that the book does not easily turn on the can.

Place some marbles all along the rim and place the same book on the marbles. Now try to turn the book. Is it easier? However there is still friction between the marbles. How about putting a few drops of cooking oil in the ridge of the rim (this can get messy, so you may use a wooden sheet or a chopping board instead of a book).

Now place the object over the marbles and turn it. Is it easier to turn the book? The above homeschool curriculum experiment will give you an idea about how ball bearings are used in simple machines to reduce friction.

The Ancient City of Mdina Never Loses Its Fascination

Time travel, as we are all too well aware, remains the stuff of science fiction. One day, maybe, but not for now. Sadly that means we will never be able to flick a switch and appear in the middle of a medieval joust armed with a six pack and digital camera. However, in Malta we do have one of the closest things you will ever find to time travel – the ancient city of Mdina.

From the second you step through its imposing gates it will truly feel like you have turned back the clock several hundred years. The narrow streets, fascinating architecture and overall ambience of this stunning place make it one of Malta’s most visited sites.

As you walk in, try to block out the image of the tourists clicking their way down the cobbled lanes and, instead, imagine knights in armour marching up and down looking important and generally acting as if they owned the place – which they pretty much did. And, to top it all off, if you walk to the end of the city – not that far, so non-walkers need not panic – you will be rewarded with the most magnificent view of the island imaginable.

For the more cultural amongst you there are plenty of attractions within the wall of Mdina like numerous musems and historical sites as well as the city’s imposing Cathedral. Getting there is easy whether by car, bus or taxi and there are plenty of officially organised tours which visit the former capital city every day. Visiting Malta without visiting Mdina is not a criminal offence. But it certainly should be. So go.

Getting to this must-see location is easy with buses leaving regularly throughout the day from Sliema. You need to look for the number 65. Just be careful you don’t miss the last bus back. Alternatively, if you have a car then take a quick look at your map before setting off although, due to its touristic importance, Mdina is very well signposted on all major roads.

Mdina by Night

Mdina during the day is a beautiful, beautiful place. But we have gone into that in more detail elsewhere. What we are looking at here is how the Silent City fairs by night. Although, obviously, all the museums and attractions are closed at night, a visit to this stunning fortified city after dark is very much worth the effort.

To make it a truly memorable occasion, why not pack a few goodies in a bag – a bottle of wine, some cheese, maybe some crackers – and head towards the far end of the city. There you will find the bastions which overlook large parts of Malta.

Climb up on top, break open the wine and enjoy one of the most memorable picnics you are ever likely to have. Lie back and look at the stars as you let your mind wander – but just be careful not to let your body wander as the drop down the other side would cause some serious injury if not worse.

In our experience, the best time to visit Mdina at night is when there is a full moon, as this helps bring the entire city to life. The picture we have painted may sound ideal for romantic couples but what if you are past all that?

Well, just have a quiet wander round the city’s streets and see if you can spot any of the many ghosts that are believed to inhabit the buildings. For example, you may come across one house near the bastions with pretty flowers outside.

This is rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a knight who killed himself after the woman that lived there rejected him. It is said you can sometimes see his shadow on the balcony from where he plunged to his death…

Getting to this must-see location is easy with buses leaving regularly throughout the day from Sliema. You need to look for the number 65. Just be careful you don’t miss the last bus back. Alternatively, if you have a car, take a quick look at your map before setting off, although, due to its touristic importance, Mdina is very well signposted on all major roads.

Ice Age the Th4w

If you haven’t caught on to the Ice Age craze yet, pick up a copy of all three of the current videos. Get some pop corn, plenty of soda, and get comfortable. The creators of Ice Age have managed to put together a series of three films suitable for the whole family. While the kids love the odd friend match up’s, adults can still find humor in the flick as well.

Rumors started before Dawn Of The Dinosaurs even hit theaters. Ice Age Th4w is rumored to be hitting the big screen some time in 2012. The storyline is said to take place in a more modern time, familiar characters including Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, and Scrat had been frozen solid in the past. Being kept in a museum the Sub-Zero Hero’s accidentally thaw out to roam the streets of modern day.

Some fans are disappointed, seeing this as the definitive end to the series run. Others see it as a new twist which can still be built on. Looking back through the past, everyone of their sequels has been more popular than it’s predecessor making it a promising option to the creators.

If they keep on this streak, they might get a great series going. They say it’s not easy making it past the third sequel, and only a few have successfully made it. They have a good run going, let’s hope it doesn’t stop here. If there is a 4th, I hope they do it in 3D again.

Teeth – My Introduction to Feminist Horror

I am looking at the sticky notes I have little ideas about this movie written on. Never in my life have I written notes about a movie. I’m a social justice educator not a film critic. That being said Teeth gave me so many things to think about that I found myself taking notes anyway. After the movie I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie that had got me thinking had gotten decent reviews from critics.

So what is Teeth? Well, Teeth is the story of the heroine, Dawn, who has Vagina Denetata. In other words teeth in her vagina. I won’t go into the whole movie here, suffice it to say that it’s a horror movie, and let your imagination wander. The real reason that I wanted to write about it was its label as “Feminist Horror.” After having written an article on sexism in movies I was curious as to what feminist horror was. After watching Teeth I got a good idea. Feminist Horror is empowering.

That being said it’s not your mom’s feminism. There are really, historically speaking, three waves of feminism. First wave was the Cady Stanton’s and the Susan B. Anthony’s who fought for women’s right to vote and such. The second wave is the Gloria Steinem’s and Gloria Alreds, who made huge strides in equality for women, albeit some will say at the cost of their own femininity. The third wave, or as some call it post feminism, is women who ascribe to the ideal of equal rights, but don’t necessarily want to give up their femininity to get there. Teeth falls solidly in the third wave. The main character Dawn is perky and cute. Part of a an abstinence movement among some of her fellow students. She is seen as a role model by those who ascribe to her ideology.

At the surface this movie is just a campy horror flick, but beneath the surface is something much more provocative. Dawn in her own way is the classic “Final Girl”, while being the one that everyone fears at the same time; heroine or villainess depending on your view. If you are a guy, no matter how open you may be, this movie will make you cringe at one point or another. Despite our outward appearances we men still have ingrained messages about what a man’s role in society is. That doesn’t mean we embrace them, but they are there none the less.

The best part for me of the movie was Dawn’s internal struggle with her own identity. She asks aloud, “What’s wrong with me.” She has the ingrained messages about how women are supposed to behave. Even as a woman who is trying to save her virginity until her wedding night and not give in to the pressure of men she had the internalized ideal of being submissive. How can she be submissive to her husband if she castrates him. The idea makes her the ultimate monster. Dawn reads about the mythology of Vagina Denetata in which the hero is the one that breaks the teeth in the vagina of the monstrous women. By breaking the teeth to allow penetration the hero is reclaiming his manhood and power over the women who dared to have power over him. I also read up on the mythology, and without exception all of the women with the teeth were evil. The all important penetration of a woman as being a manhood rite is stripped when the women in question can take that which defines a mans manhood. In a patriarchal society this would have been the ultimate sin.

The men in the movie that encounter Dawn really get what is coming to them. The empowerment piece is when Dawn overcomes her initial disgust about her condition when she realizes that she can control it. Having had consensual sex with a teen boy in the movie she is overjoyed when he doesn’t die. She buys into the hero myth that this young man is the hero who helps defeat her unfortunate condition. That is until during their next encounter she finds out that she was all part of a bet while in bed with the boy. When she finds out that he was just trying to score and didn’t care about her at all, well…..snip. It brings to mind the story of Lorena Bobbit, who after putting up with years of abuse from her husband, castrates him. America was outraged, how dare she? That was his manhood for god sakes. Never mind that in that same year thousands of women were raped and sexually abused every where. We focused our anger on the one woman who went to extremes to fight back. I am not condoning castration, I just find it peculiar that we were all so shocked that a woman eventually had enough and took matters into her own hands so to speak. John Wayne Bobbit became a D list celebrity and even made money by making his own adult film. Lorena was vilified and held up as everything that was wrong with women in society.

By the end of the movie Dawn is fed up and leaves town. The end of the movie is perfect in that it sums up the frustration of all women toward men that just don’t get it. I won’t give it away just go rent the movie. If you have Netflix it is available on their watch instantly section. While as a man I definitely squirmed a bit during this one I also, as a man who is trying to be a better feminist, enjoyed a horror flick that drove its point home with a sledge hammer. Cheeky and campy in parts, Teeth isn’t going to win any major awards. However, if it starts the kind of conversation I think it will then the movie has already done its job.
