Home Security – Defend Your Home and Possessions Against Intruders!

With all of the emphasis in the past few years on Homeland Security, many people have overlooked the importance of home security. While it might not make the first story on the news, when your house is burgled, safeguarding your home soon becomes the most important issue in your world.

The Facts

There’s no reason to wait until it happens to you. According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 75% of all crime in the United States is property crime. In 2003, there were 14 million thefts of property. In 83% of these crimes, the burglars actually entered the home or some other building to steal property.

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, residential burglaries in 2003 averaged $1600 in property or cash loss per incident. This does not include repair of locks, doors, windows, and other destruction. Are you willing to give $1600 (not to mention the security of your home and safety of your family) to a burglar?

It can happen to anyone. Whether you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area, you are a target of burglars. What are you going to do about it?

The Options

Never underestimate the resourcefulness of an intruder. Simply locking your doors and windows isn’t enough. If you can think of a way to get into your home, surely someone who makes crime his living will be able to as well.

You also shouldn’t overestimate the resourcefulness of neighbors. Neighborhood watches are fine, but how many of your neighbors spend every hour you aren’t home watching your house? How would hey distinguish between a furniture delivery and a robbery? Can you tell just by looking if someone is simply walking for exercise or casing houses for possible burglary attempts? Even houses less than a mile from police stations are easily robbed.

There are more effective options that will prevent break-ins and make your home secure.

Home Alarms

A simple loud noise will not deter a criminal. Your neighbors are likely to turn up their televisions to drown out the sound. Battery and even electrically operated sound alarms are easily thwarted by criminals.

If you are going to use a home alarm, you should use a monitored system. When you decide between monitored home alarm systems, you generally have three choices – a do-it-yourself system, a national monitoring system, and a local home security company system.

The do-it-yourself installation systems are by far the cheapest. You need a bit of technical know-how, and you need to know how an intruder enters. When you buy your own equipment, you have your choice of companies to monitor your system. Some systems let you program additional numbers to be called when the alarm is triggered, which isn’t as helpful as you’d think. By the time you or a neighbor is able to react and call the police, your burglar is usually long gone. It’s best to stick with the pros.

National alarm system monitoring services (such as ADT or Brinks) are the most popular. Common customer complaints include being taken advantage of on installation. The national companies contract installation with independent dealers. Many ADT and Brinks customers have reported outrageous quotes, having to negotiate with the installer, and advertised specials being worthless. Other problems include monitoring errors and slow reaction time. When an alarm is triggered, the company calls you to determine if the alarm went off by accident (the large majority of home alarm triggers are accidents by the home owners). If they cannot get you on the phone, they will then call the proper authorities. Unhappy customers have reported no calls at all or very delayed calls. These companies also

require you to contract with them for a specified amount of time, usually 2-3 years, even if you are unhappy with their service.

Local alarm monitoring systems are usually less expensive with higher levels of customer satisfaction. A local company will have fewer customers, so you are more important to them. You will get a less expensive, yet completely effective installation by an actual company representative. Because these companies rarely require long-term contracts, you have more freedom to change monitoring companies. Knowing this, they will usually charge less per month and put forth more effort to keep your business.

Any home alarm system comes with a useful lawn sign indicating that your home is protected by an alarm system. This, alone, is a form of prevention as a thief is more likely to hit a house without an alarm system. Alarm systems are also great for fires and other emergencies. Usually as an added feature, you can hook smoke alarms up to your monitoring system. If a smoke alarm goes off, the fire department is notified. This is especially beneficial during the night or if you leave pets at home during the day. Panic buttons are good if you happen to be home during a break-in or you have a medical emergency. You should also get a break on your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance when you have a system installed. Monitored home alarm systems are definitely worth the investment, but you shouldn’t stop there.

House Sitters

Even if you have an alarm system, house sitters are invaluable. If you leave your home to go on vacation, your best defense is having actual people in your home. The majority of burglaries in the United States happen during the day while people are at work. Criminals will take the easiest route. If people are in their targeted home, they will move on to a house that appears empty. The problem with traditional house sitting services is that they simply make one or two trips to your home a day to collect mail, open curtains, water plants, and throw off criminals. That still leaves about 23 hours in the day that your home is vulnerable to intrusion or fires.

The best house sitting option is to have people living in your home. If you have a friend or family member stay at your home full-time throughout the length of your vacation, you will worry less about burglaries, fires, and other problems such as coming back to a flooded home because of a broken hot water heater.

Having a house sitter also cuts down on preparation time and expenses before your vacation. You won’t have to have your mail stopped (all a criminal has to do is watch your postal carrier skip your house to assume you’re on vacation), buy and set light-timers, or even board the dog.

Don’t have a friend or family member who can stay at your home? There are services available that match up people and live-in house sitters. It’s as though someone is renting your house while you’re on vacation, only they generally don’t pay you rent. They will pay utilities, mow the lawn, take care of your mail, pets, and home while you’re away. They will notify you of any problems. The services help you screen candidates and find the perfect person, couple, or family willing to take care of your home.

The Solution

The very best prevention you can implement is a combination of 24-hour home alarm monitoring and a house sitter if you are going to be away for any length of time. Don’t become a statistic. Start protecting your home today!

Travel – The New Incentive To Get More Business

How do you get prospects to become clients? What extra can you add to your presentation to make the sale? Why not try an incentive? The three top incentives to get people to do anything is cash, products and travel. Cash incentives cost the most and believe it or not are the least effective. The reason being is that you pay dollar for dollar and what little cash you offer is used to pay bills and is quickly forgotten. Products work quite well, and it is true you can by them at a discount off retail but the problem is, most of your clients already have everything. It is almost impossible to guess what they want. Printed mugs, shirts, pens are very old fashioned. What is left to offer, a CD player?

Vacation and travel incentives are one of the most powerful methods of attracting business, retaining profitable clients, increasing profits, enhancing product awareness, and improving employee productivity. Businesses who have used vacation incentives in their marketing and promotions have seen at least 30% increase in their sales!

Why not recreation travel? First of all it is the cheapest. The most successful travel promotion in the country today (I will be mentioning it later in this article) cost 1.5% of its market value! More important recreation travel appeals to everyone. And travel is a long lasting gift. For example, think of all the preparation that goes into effect for a long vacation. Then think of all the pictures that you take during your vacation and remember for a lifetime. That’s right. Memories of a vacation can last forever! How is that for a great incentive! To show you how powerful recreational travel is just look at the most popular screen savers on everyone’s computer. You won’t find pictures of money. You won’t find pictures of products. What you will find is everyone’s dream vacation resort with palm trees in the background. Get the picture! The first words from most lottery winners are – “The first thing I am going to do is go on a long vacation”. I assume you get the point that recreation travel is one hell of an incentive.

According to the results of an email survey conducted by the Incentive Travel Fact Book, 58% say travel is more effective than cash or merchandise. Survey respondents consider travel to be the most effective reward. “Cash bonuses are necessary but travel is a higher reward”, says Verizon’s Porterfield. Porterfield added, “When people spend their money, its gone. But the recognition that comes from travel incentives lives on”. Additionally, in a recent survey of American workers, 85% said they were motivated by vacation travel incentives.

Incentive magazine in their September2003 issue said travel is remembered two to one over cash or merchandise and a USA Today survey said “93% preferred travel over other incentives”. Incentive Magazine said business respondents to a recent survey said travel incentives meet 99% of their objectives.

Travel incentives make great sales incentives. In a special report in Promo Magazine, it was noted that LifeUSA attracted new agents and sent sales soaring by abandoning its annual cash incentive program for an inclusive campaign that gave out merchandise and travel. By the program’s conclusion enrollments exceeded LifeUSA’s initial goal by 700%!

Travel incentives make great employee incentives. Target Appliances President Daryl Gamerman in Maryland said, “We introduced our first travel incentive for sales employees five years ago and since then we’ve only lost staff due to retirement. I don’t ever have a problem with our sales people not working hard or volunteering for extra work, because they know it will help them qualify for a great trip”.

Travel incentives builds customer loyalty. The Frequent Builders Program at Garco Building systems offered travel awards to individuals. Since launching the program, Garco has experienced a 15% to 25% growth rate, compared to the industry standard of 2% to 3%.

COST OF TRAVEL INCENTIVES

Now lets get to the best part. You can buy recreation travel wholesale, and I mean really wholesale. Look at these figures.

American Insomnia (In Poetic Prose – A Requiem for America)

(In Poetic Prose, and not for every reader, and not for discussion

It is a requiem for America)

Has it occurred to the reader, how many civilizations has been irretrievable lost-?

Buried by social upheavals with subsequent relapses to savagery?

Because of the loss of morals, law and order, violation of one’s Godly values, or for not having any values!

Rome, Babylon, Troy, Zimbabwe, Russia, China, North Korea, Venezuela, Cambodia, all of the Middle East, would we delve its ruins, they will come up short…

Cities, and then countries.

Soon to be Globalism, and the Antichrist running the show!

We look for rusting mechanisms for dispute, add some doubtful data, dogma, such as no one can decipher, leaving our old friends like Israel, for the Bulls of Bashan-

I assure you this is not probable but certain: the very history of America in the near future, will become more or less legendary-

That is to say: no longer predominant, or widespread…

If indeed it remains on its current course.

Yes, I am a speculative thinker, along different lines of thought.

We are now seeing the use of illimitable, illegitimate power through concentration, by our leaders!

From the outside in, and now from the inside-out, the growth of rapid radicalism is taking place;

Laws being bent to appease, and those so called quasi-friendships overseas, having left America ignorant and broke!

The loss of freedoms due to political correctness, has shattered our Constitution, our law enforcement, our military-

And I can go on and on, but enough is enough…

We the people are being put into an inescapable web, to the point one can’t even ask a personal question that seethes within them.

The more I come to know, the more I am overcome by a sense the unbearable needs to be seize upon with or by patriotism.

Chauvinism, -not narrow-mindedness, but like the Roman soldier who fought with pride for a belief, will soon be dead in our armed forces, and the will to fight for the flag, the one now allowed to be trampled on by dirty heels of whomever, will be nowhere to be found!

It appears to me-over much discussion I’ve listened to-and all too little knowledge within those discussions, the matter of what is and is not good for America, is overlooked-

Even by the FBI!

When God is gone, all that is left to satisfy the hunger of the mongrel, is power, and thus, power takes over!

This all will materialize on investigation.

Even in heaven, there was a war, and laws, and when Lucifer violated them and was judged for treason, there was a consequence.

Like Christ said: ‘Give to Caesar and God, to each what belongs to them.’

But both Caesar and Christ knew the value in maintaining laws, and values, had Rome not, it would not have ruled the world for 400-years.

We have ruled it for less than a hundred, and we’re falling apart.

Now in America I am struck by the tone of our elected, or soon to be elected intellectual elite, on their discussions!

And those who follow.

I doubt greatly if there is anything of value left to be learned.

Today in America the secret is: how is one to know the truth, which is a thing so utterly improbable?

Perhaps unsaid, but surely thought!

You vote for whom you wish, and you get the government in which one must tolerate-

Much as I have grown to admire America, and have fought her wars, and tried to keep her deep rooted values (which are no longer deep-rooted), raised on old thinking and reasoning I suppose, I have become the most incomprehensible and alien being on earth to her now thousand differences, if not indifference!

I seem not to know her, as I once knew her.

Perhaps I’m too simple of a person, in a complex world.

Now as I look at America she gives me a long unreadable glance.

Even though, I will never stop loving her.

On a few other thoughts: if the law isn’t the same for everybody, why should anybody keep it?

Does not a man or woman think: if s/he can break it, so can I?

And of course, this is when the politicians panic, God forbid they think like us!

America wake up, you’re walking in your sleep!

Plato said in so many words: if the law doesn’t stop me from taking another man’s wife next-door, and the spouse is helpless, who’s to stop me?

In war if you do not fight fire with fire you lose ground, you must be worse than the enemy, lest you lay down and die, and who back home will ever be thankful, and care, other than your personal loved ones!

The world at large bites its lip, turns an eye: out of sight, out of mind-they call soldiers ‘baby killers’ and turnabout and have an abortion, I’ve been called that, down that road, upon my return from South Vietnam, in 1971, I don’t remember killing a baby, but I know many who have, having worked as a counselor in Federal and State prisons for a decade.

America, she is blind as a bat, alas, when she hears the truth, she still will not accept it: pride comes before destruction, as the old saying goes.

So whomever is reading this, be on your toes.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being a QA – Quality Assurance Coordinator

When I was applying for jobs online, I found this job opportunity for a shipping and receiving coordinator. I sent in my resume and was quickly called back about an opening for a QA, (Quality Assurance Coordinator). I agreed to the interview knowing nothing about the job at all. I assumed it had something to do with checking the quality of a certain product, I decided to go for it and take my chances. Jobs are slim picking these days, what did I have to lose. That was two months ago and I am now a proud QA for a successful printing company.

What is a Quality Assurance Coordinator?

You pretty much run around all day checking the quality of the product being produced. You make sure everything is as close to perfect as can be. You look for mistakes, you check the production sheets and make sure the job numbers and codes match. You make sure the employees are doing their job and not letting any problems slip by. You are pretty much the person no one likes, including the supervisors. I have heard people refer to us as the cops or the FBI. You are the person no one wants to see and it makes everyone a little antsy when you are around.

I have found that making friends in this company is not going to be easy but, I have to say I find it all kind of humorous. Being a QA, you have some control and you pretty much have nothing to do with the supervisor. We have a lead but we only see him once every two months or so from what I hear. The Quality Assurance department is kind of separated from everything else in the company. It is kind of like being in your own little world. It is like being a security guard at a mall or a chaperone at a dance. You make everyone a little paranoid and no one really wants to interact with you. If you have found and opening for a Quality Assurance position and not sure what to expect. Here is a first hand look at the advantages and disadvantages of being a QA.

The advantages of being a QA.

If you like control and not having a boss always looking over your shoulder, this is the job for you.

The freedom is very nice. You are on your own schedule and you are not stuck at a machine all day. You get to move around a lot which makes the day go by so much faster.

If it is a slow day, you finish your rounds a lot faster which gives you extra free time. Some people take advantage of this but, I do not. If you want to play on your phone at work, then being a QA is the job for you.

The sweet feeling of catching a mistake can make you feel proud and important. Showing a supervisor a problem he or she did not know about earns you a lot of respect.

f you are a social butterfly then this is the job for you. You pretty much get the opportunity to interact with everyone working at the company and you get to flirt with anyone that has got your eye.

The work is relatively easy as long as you are able to focus and keep your eye open. The feeling of control can be a nice feeling as well.

The disadvantages of being a QA.

You are not everyone’s favorite person in the world and I find it hard sometimes to start a conversation with someone. They kind of respond as if you are a teacher at school. They keep it short and simple.

Making people mad when you find a little mistake that the employee thinks is ok. When you find a problem the employee is put on the spot. They all want to get their numbers. When you stop production you will have some angry co workers.

You really have no one to go too for help or a problem. The supervisor on the floor will answer questions but, you have to remember they are more worried about production than stopping it for a minor problem as well. You can make their job a little bit more stressful which they hate.

If something goes wrong or a mistake slips through. Who is the first person they are going to look at, the QA. You will most likely be held responsible for a major mistake in production.

If the company has a major fall out. The Quality Assurance department will be one of the first ones to go.

You really have no one to notice you as working hard or give you any credit for how hard you work. No one cares about you. The chances of a nice increase or promotion is slim.

The pay is not that great. I guess it depends on who you are working for. If you are a QA for a car or truck manufacturer, I am sure the pay is very nice.

The HBO Series The Sopranos

The Sopranos was a long running award winning HBO television series. It aired on HBO from January 1999 to June 2007. The series followed the story of a character named Tony Soprano played by James Gandolfini. He was a mob boss and a family man. The plot often shifted between his personal life and his exciting crime riddled business life.

Throughout the seven year series, Tony sits through several sessions with his psychiatrist. The doctor is named Jennifer Melfi, and she is played by Lorraine Bracco. Much of the subtextual tension in the show revolves around Tony’s dual life as an ordinary good man and a murderous mobster.

The show’s creators want the audience to grapple with their affection for Tony the seemingly good guy in one scene and Tony the killer in other scenes. One of the main roles of the psychiatry sessions is that it gives Tony, himself, a place to grapple with those issues. Doctor Melfi is also required to deal with her notions of good and evil as she counsels Mr. Soprano. In some of the later episodes of the show, they even have a love affair.

Besides Tony’s doctor, the other characters who play a prominent role in his life are his immediate family. The Sopranos are composed of his wife Carmela, who is played by Edie Falco, his daughter Meadow, and his son Anthony Junior. Although Tony tutors his nephew Christopher into becoming a fellow mobster, when his own children get older near the end of the series, he does not seem to want the same fate for them. Meadow is a great student, and her hardest decision is whether to pursue law or medicine. In contrast, Anthony Junior, who is called AJ, seems to accomplish nothing. He neither excels at school nor work. Although AJ engages in some minor criminal activity, his father never inducts him into the mob family. The series ends inconclusively regarding AJ’s future.

Besides Tony’s blood family, the other most important part of his life is his mob family. Throughout the series, Tony is forced to make a lot of stressful decisions regarding his mob family. He must run it as a business and make cut throat financial decisions. Furthermore, he is forced to occasionally kill very close friends when they turn out to be rats or spies for the FBI. The FBI is, incidentally, always lurking in the background and trying to infiltrate the family.

If you are looking for a show that has both action and drama, The Sopranos is a great choice. Even now, years after its original air date, the show still retains a level of creativity and an entertainment value that is hard to match.

T-Mobile Reverse Cell Phone Lookup Directory

Cell numbers are still part of the private domain meaning they are not freely available to the public. For example, land line numbers which are part of the public domain can be found in phone books along with names and addresses. These phone books do not exist for cell phone numbers because they are still private. So how do you go about finding information about the cell phone number? It is actually quite easy.

If you want to try free methods, the best thing to do is enter the phone number into one of the major search engines and see what results. You can do that all day and chances are you will not find very much good information. So the only other option we are left with is to use a T-Mobile reverse cell phone Lookup directory which will cost you $15 for one-time search.

When you think about it, that as is actually quite inexpensive and depending on what you need the information for, this could be dirt cheap. The reason it does cost you any money at all is because the cell phone companies lease their databases to the directories. Naturally, the cellular companies want to be paid for access to their databases and that cost is passed on to the customer.

The reputable T-Mobile reverse cell phone Lookup directory will allow you to do a free preliminary search to see if the number you are looking for is in the database. Then you can decide how valuable that information is to you and whether or not you want to pay for it. These directories also have 100% money back guarantees so there is really no risk to you. If the directory you want to use does not display a 100% money back guarantee then I would advise you to find another directory to work with.

Hidden Lies and Other Stories (Book Review)

Hidden Lies and Other Stories is an anthology of short stories, addressing people of diverse backgrounds. The stories are written by Vivian Gilbert Zabel and Holly Jahangiri, two very capable authors.

Even though each writer’s voice is very distinct, both writers are too polite to use any brutal language, and the darker storylines have been expressed through a finely sieved diction. The writers also refrain from exposing the reader to the extremely dark or obscene aspects of life. While the authors’ incredible command of the English language leaves a delightful impact in the reader’s mind, all stories inside the book burst with compelling, realistic characters through miscellaneous plotlines.

The book, with ISBN: 141163103X, is 202 pages, containing 21 short stories. The stories are organized in a random order, which may be seen as a slapdash array that may leave the reader wondering who wrote what; however, since the authors have very different styles, this order becomes complementary to a reader’s enjoyment. Plus, each author’s name appears in the headers of each double page.

Zabel’s stories contain mostly family-oriented themes with family secrets, relationships between family members, money put to good use, storms and storm dreams, and office intrigue. Her rich life experiences and her grasp of human nature are evident in her stories created through her proficient pen.

The eloquence and the writing ploys Zabel uses in constructing her stories are matchless. “Gift from the Storm” brought tears to my eyes, while the stories “Hidden Lies,” “Another Storm,” and “Lost Life” entertained by using mystery, courtroom tactics, and family involvements with twists.

Here is a taste of Zabel’s electrifying style when she writes an action scene:

” ‘FBI, freeze!’ The order boomed from a bullhorn somewhere in the surrounding trees as Walker’s men started running in the direction they had come. Walker backed to the tree, his head whipping back and forth, trying to find the source.”

Also, Zabel skillfully injects her descriptions into the action of her stories. “Clara stood at the stove checking the chicken frying in the cast iron skillet. The potatoes cooked in a covered pot, and everything needed for gravy sat on the counter top beside the range. A tap on the backdoor

caused her to whirl.”

Holly Jahangiri has a knack for surprise endings and she writes her stories with great imagination and sophisticated ease. Who would think of meeting one’s lover on a tight rope over a river between two countries as in “Meet Me Halfway”? But then, who else could cook up a fantasy game story with such cunning and skill as in “Dealing with the Demon,” probably a Halloween special? Then, who else could unite family relationships with the cloned child idea as in “They Might Have Been Twins”?

In the third story of the book, “Innocence Denied,” Jahangiri uses beautiful and exact descriptions, foreshadowing the plot’s twists without overdoing the exposition.”Amanda set the table for three, using the good silver and the fine, antique china. Each of the cups was marred with tiny cracks, and the dishes were chipped, but Amanda loved them, for they were delicate, and beautifully hand-painted, a throwback to finer days.”

Another example of her gift for portrayals and descriptions that foreshadow the plot shines in Real Life. “She’d never actually seen Martin in boxers, but she had a red-blooded, athletic imagination.”

In “The Bridesmaid’s Tale” is one picturesque proof of the way Jahangiri brings her characters to life. “Allie took off her jeans and stepped into the bridesmaid’s dress. She took grim satisfaction in the fact that it fit like a glove, despite having been two sizes smaller than her usual dress size and despite its close proximity to shocking pink – a color to be avoided by matronly women over 40. The tulle stole draped seductively around her shoulders. Her grandmother’s opal necklace shimmered at her collarbone, and a matching pair of earrings flirted from behind shining golden strands of hair.”

Vivian Gilbert Zabel makes Oklahoma her home. She has taught high school English, composition, and creative writing for twenty-five years. Her publishing credits include poetry, short stories, and articles over the past thirty-five years.

Holly Jahangiri, a Texas resident, younger of the two, is a professional writer with several publishing credits and more than twenty years’ experience in technical writing, freelancing, and editing.

This book became a must-do project for the two authors Zabel and Jahangiri after they met on the internet in Writing.com. Both women give credit to their husbands and their families for their personal successes.

The best thing about Hidden Lies and Other Stories is that the stories progress inwards from the surface through the characters’ challenging predicaments to make the reader feel the sheer pain or joy of their circumstances. For me, Hidden Lies and Other Stories, as a whole, has been a joy to read. I recommend it heartily.

The Truth About Elvis Aron Presley: In His Own Words; Part One

The author of this book absolutely sparks the imagination of readers with new information revealed about Elvis Presley. Donald Hinton, MD, is a medical doctor who has specialized in the field of psychiatry. The physician lives in the State of Missouri and practices medicine at two different hospitals. But this is not what his new book is about. Dr. Hinton claims that a mutual friend introduced him to Elvis Presley.

Dr. Hinton explains that Elvis Presley is indeed alive and well. However, he suffers from chronic pain syndrome. When a mutual friend introduced him to Elvis, he discovered some differences with the man claiming to be the former King of Rock-and-Roll. It seems that Elvis has changed his name to Jesse. This is the name of Elvis’ twin brother, who died at birth. From this point on, I will address Elvis, as Jesse, as Dr. Hinton has done.

When Dr. Hinton met Jesse, he examined him as a patient. He discovered that Jesse suffered from chronic pain syndrome. Even though this is not his area of specialty, the physician was able to treat Jesse for his problem. During the time he treated Jesse, he developed a close relationship with him. Dr. Hinton claims that it’s easy to see that Jesse is Elvis. Aside from aging, the man is obviously Elvis Presley.

Dr. Hinton claims that Jesse was able to go to his former home, Graceland, and find a pair of cuff links in his former bedroom. He claims that Jesse gave him the cuff links as further proof of his identity. When Dr. Hinton tries to probe Jesse as to how he’s financially surviving these days, he finds out that Jesse has a number of liquid assets and cash to last him for a long time. However, he was vanquished from his former home, Graceland, when Elvis Presley Enterprises found out about him.

Dr. Hinton explains that he was intrigued that Jesse has no credibility in the eyes of his former friends and family. However, given the evidence provided by Jesse, he found it not impossible for his story to be true.

Dr. Hinton claims that Jesse also offers various FBI files that would be difficult for anyone else but Elvis to get. Dr. Hinton claims that Jesse is living a very secluded life, but enjoys day-to-day activities that Elvis never could experience.

Although the book is about Dr. Hinton’s relationship with Jesse, it is considered an autobiography.

I really liked the detail that Dr. Hinton provides in his book regarding the different times he met and visited with Jesse, along with some details regarding the FBI files. He gives details about Elvis’s voice and uncanny similarities between Jesse and Elvis. His detail seems to make his story very credible.

However, what I don’t like about the book is that he doesn’t give specific information as to what Jesse is doing presently. He also doesn’t give specific information where Jesse is living. It seems that Jesse has several different homes, each in different states.

At first I thought that the book was an attempt to capitalize on Elvis Presley. Even though I have not dismissed this suspicion, it cannot be denied that Dr. Hinton has provided information to his readers that would not be available unless one had a connection with Elvis.

Obviously, the truth exists. However, as in many other books and claims, you must come to your own conclusion.

Oops – I Married a Con Artist!

Dream of a Better Life

A cut above the others. A man of his word. Clean cut. Tall, dark, and… The sound of the car door opening and Sophie plopping herself onto the seat jolted me out of my daydream. Raising Sophie was my 24/7 assignment. Her father and I had divorced years before. Now he refused to pay child support and didn’t bother to take advantage of visitation rights with Sophie.

Sophie’s involvement in sports, music, and honors programs accelerated over the years. I joined a gym to get fit so that I could try to keep up with her. Financially strapped and 20 minutes behind in life, we continuously juggled time, energy, and money shortages. I longed to be rescued. Where was that man in my life?

“Mom, get up!” Sophie called just before sunrise. She needed a ride to school. Coming to full consciousness, I remembered we had not gotten home from the ball game last night until eleven. No time for a hot bubble bath this morning, and it wouldn’t soften this boot camp lifestyle anyway. I want a husband to share this load.

An Officer and a Gentleman

Then one day he arrived-Frank, my knight in shining armor He didn’t just talk of slaying dragons, he went right to work on them. He chased away an unfit boyfriend who had eased himself into Sophie’s life. He successfully confronted an unscrupulous male vendor in one of my most challenging business situations, saving my business and $5,000. His persuasive manner and loving cooking enticed my daughter to eat meat once again. Because he made it his business to cook her favorite meat dishes, she regained her health after having developing serious anemia from a fad Vegan diet.

Frank and I had met casually at the post office. A few telephone conversations later and he arrived at my place of business in uniform to take me out to lunch. Tall, dark, and handsome, Frank was an accomplished Air Force Academy graduate, officer, pilot, and church-going man. After 14 years of waiting, my dream was about to come true. God owed me this one.

A Dream Wedding

The day was pristine, the air crystalline, and the sea around us a sparkling turquoise as we spoke our vows to one another. Overlooking the ocean from the Captain’s bow, we could see forever-this was a beautiful prelude to our future life together. It was August 7, 2000. Because this was a second marriage for each of us, we agreed a quiet wedding cruise would be romantic. Frank arranged for Sophie to have a private room onboard ship so that she could be my maid of honor. I can still envision our breathtaking wedding on the ship floating on the Caribbean Sea. It was simple, elegant, and tranquil-a heaven-sent marriage.

I vowed to dedicate all my being toward my husband’s happiness. Once home, even the mundane took on a quality of special-ness. Frank took us to church, to dinner, and on movie dates. He continued to court me, politely including Sophie. Frank remembered holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries with flowers. Following our wedding, he booked a honeymoon cruise for later. My perfect husband had come to life.

Peace, as tranquil as the eye of a storm, enveloped our household. It was interrupted only by the normal minor adjustments each of us had to make to married life. Then Frank was promoted to major. I was disappointed when I was not invited to the ceremony. “At the last minute, my team flew in from Washington D.C. I barely knew about it,” Frank explained. He atoned by hosting a dinner and inviting non-military friends to celebrate his new rank. Then came 911. The Air Force put Frank on “red alert” for a combat mission to Afghanistan.

On September 18, my major rose early and kissed me good-bye. Proudly, I posted Frank’s photo amidst the other servicemen’s photos on our church bulletin board and fervently prayed for my major to come home alive. He arrived home ten days later. I noted others were gone longer. Back from a top-secret mission, I tried to decode his dark moods and silence. Just part of his responsible nature, I reasoned. He often reminded me of his top-secret clearance and I…I just submitted to his stifling gag order.

The Honeymoon Is Over

Tension arose in our marriage when I began to pressure Frank for dependent military identification. Sophie needed an athletic physical and I needed dental work. But Frank dragged his feet about finalizing our military benefits.

Then there was the delayed honeymoon. As I was finally and happily packing for the cruise, Frank cracked his tooth on a fruitcake nutshell. We cancelled the trip just hours before we were to leave. Everyone knew the ship’s onboard dentist could have taken care of Frank’s tooth, but he refused to go. And I cried my heart out. Our honeymoon trip was over before it started.

I began to be besieged by mounting insecurities and suspicions. I ask Frank to join me in marriage counseling so that we could confront trust issues and financial concerns. He said the problem was mine-that I had not yet overcome my fear of trusting men. In good faith, I had shared my assets with Frank and conveyed half interest in my home to him; but it seemed he wasn’t willing to share anything with me. What was mine was ours, and what was his was still his. To assuage my fears, he finally agreed to attend marriage counseling with Dr. T

The Truth Comes Out

Then one day while I was cleaning, I found airplane tickets and receipts showing a Philippine destination at the time of his supposed Afghanistan mission. A travel agency, not the military, had issued the tickets to Frank. Torn between betraying Frank and learning the truth, I wanted to pretend I had not seen this. But if I were to deny the truth, I would betray myself. I had to find a logical explanation.

At our next counseling session, I confronted Frank about the Philippines. He explained he’d been assigned to perform a special mission under civilian cover. His reluctant, but assured, manner conveyed a top-secret aura. My feelings were mixed. I was ashamed that I had disrespected Frank’s career, but I was relieved by his explanation. And I was confused because there was still a lack of clarity. Our counselor advised me to accept Frank’s explanation at face value, but his face showed growing concern.

My mind became a battlefield of conflicting questions. Why can’t I just trust him? Why had Frank misled me about his mission’s destination? How do other officers’ wives handle these situations? I would have loved my knight in shining armor forever had not cracks in his armor continued to emerge. His “top-secret” missions just weren’t adding up.

Now my sister and Sophie became suspicious. They ran an Internet background check and learned Frank wasn’t an Air Force Academy graduate, pilot, or major. He was not a college graduate either. It was all a lie! But they were certain that at this point I would not believe such allegations. So they delayed telling me.

Spy Wife

Confusion with Frank’s credit and identity because his full name was rather common, brought increasing public embarrassment. The time had come to combat my imaginings once and for all. I sent an inquiry to the United States Air Force in Washington D.C. to find out if Frank might possibly be impersonating an officer.

A pilot friend had become suspicious of Frank’s lack of aircraft knowledge. He volunteered to search Frank’s social security number through some connections he had. I took him up on it. About then a city detective spoke with me. He had recently arrested Frank on a $37,000 check fraud charge. Frank had professed mistaken identity. Mistaken identity or identity fraud?

I began to think about confronting Frank, but would I endanger myself …and Sophie? Would he tell the truth? I have to know who he is…or isn’t, my mind screamed. Looking back, I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when I knew who he wasn’t. The real Frank is buried beneath multiple layers of cover-ups. So instead of confronting him only to rouse another cover-up, I became a spy wife! For 22 minutes each day while he showered, I searched his wallet for evidence; nervously scampering down to my office to make copies of everything I could get my hands on.

Yet, I was heartsick when I heard from the local Office of Special Investigations (OSI) that Frank’s shiny patent leather shoes, pilot’s wings, medals, and insignias, weren’t Air Force issued, and the so-called housing allotment from the US Treasury turned out to be a meager disability check.

Major Checkmate

As spy wife, I felt like an amateur playing chess with a seasoned master. Clearly, I had to find some irrefutable evidence. Only that would show the truth to be more believable than Frank’s lies. Apprehensive about the danger I might be in, I played the devoted wife, while I continued spying. I needed to know his real identity and agenda.

My sister and Sophie finally revealed the results of their investigation to me. We formed an ad hoc spy team. At that point, we only knew who Frank was not, but piece-by-piece, our spy team assembled the bigger picture. We found that Frank was 10 years younger than he claimed to be. We learned that he had used numerous social security numbers. His true social security number led us to a criminal history fraught with dismissals and probations for felony fraud offenses. We deduced I wasn’t his second wife, but his fifth. He’d fathered at least four children, yet claimed only one.

We tracked down two of Frank’s former wives in town, and both were remarkably understanding and helpful. Both had unresolved issues with Frank. He had used their credit cards even during our marriage. The former wives joined our spy team and together we pressed credit card fraud charges against Frank.

Dr. T, now wise to Frank’s game, used our last counseling session to influence Frank to return his interest in my property. “You’re an Air Force Major, right?” Frank nodded yes. “You don’t need her money, do you?” Dr. T challenged. Determined to preserve his false identity, our “major” boldly signed the deed. Dr T. had a notary standing by to make it legal. Outside, an angry Frank proclaimed, “I’m finished with marriage counseling!” Because Frank had impersonated an officer/pilot and traveled to the Philippines shortly after the 911 terror attacks, a possible terrorism connection couldn’t be ignored.

Then a question arose in my mind. Could I be considered an accomplice to whatever Frank had done? I decided I had to cooperate fully with the OSI. As the OSI prepared to arrest Frank for impersonating an officer, they requested I keep a log of the times Frank went out in uniform. Had I awakened on the scene of a 007 movie? I wondered. “Next time he dresses in uniform, page me, and we’ll arrest him,” the OSI major ordered.

Legal Rights and Wrongs

Frank put on his uniform and left the house. So, as instructed, I paged the OSI. Their response shocked me. “We aren’t going to arrest him; he’s never been military and isn’t in our jurisdiction.” I asked how they knew. “We ran his social security number,” he replied. “Which one?” I asked incredulously. “The one on his military ID.” I couldn’t believe my ears. “You ran his false social security number on his false military ID to determine he’s never been military?” “Yes,” the officer replied unflinchingly.

More of the unbelievable was yet to come. On July 7, 2002 I’d had enough. Frank had long since quit contributing financially to our family. It had only been a show of credibility anyway. Weary of supporting him while awaiting his arrest, and satisfied with the proof of fraud that we had accumulated, I decided to seek an annulment. I changed the security code to my home. Frank, not to be deterred, broke in. Sophie and I called police. Frank told them he had a right to “break into his own home.” The police asked for his identification for their report. Frank could not produce valid identification.

As police questioned Frank, Sophie quietly dashed upstairs to his office. Because she had been investigating him and had come up with so many inconsistencies between his stories and truth, she was sure he had fake IDs stashed somewhere. In the deep dark recesses of his closet, she reached into a tuxedo jacket pocket and struck a goldmine of false ID cards, credit cards, and cash Frank had taken from my purse. My driver’s license was there too. She discretely handed them to the officer. In moments Frank was arrested for false ID. Frank wasn’t, however, charged with the theft of my cash or driver’s license. “Community property can’t be stolen,” police explained. Not knowing how Frank might retaliate should he discover my spying, I played dumb and reacted with utter shock when informed of his false identity.

The police took him away, but shortly afterward they came back to warn us. Frank had been released by the FBI and he was walking home. They advised us to get out and stay elsewhere for safety. They couldn’t arrest him because the FBI now had jurisdiction. Why the FBI let him go is still a mystery. “I have a right to be here,” declared Frank when I called home to ask him to leave. My neighbor had called the police for Frank and they had helped him break into my house. The police told me that without divorce papers or a restraining order, Frank had a right to be there!

After months of my assisting the OSI and FBI, Frank was free and making me a refugee from my own home. Even though Frank had fake military ID and the FBI knew it, the FBI declined to charge him. It was unbelievable! The following day I filed for a temporary restraining order and moved home as soon as the police escorted Frank out. Next, I endured a series of nerve-wracking hearings to fight for a permanent restraining order. Frank hired an attorney, but because my finances had been depleted by his embezzlement, I had to represent myself. Frank’s exes, Darla and Delia, joined me in court and held my hand to keep me brave. Thanks to a discerning female judge and astute witnesses, we won the case! I had become spy wife, detective, and now an attorney.

Uniform Magic

Frank had used his imaginary military rank like a magic wand to achieve his desires. His uniform disarmed people, overruled suspicion, and granted him instant authority. With a fraudulent credit report, he acquired a $10,000 loan in uniform from a military credit union. In uniform he sweet-talked a teller into cashing a large counter check on my business account. The account went negative and was closed. It took nine months, copies of the annulment, restraining order, and notarized fraud affidavits to reopen that account.

In uniform “my hero” secretly borrowed money from my dearest friends, explaining that my business was undergoing adversity and that I was too proud to ask for help. Frank “borrowed” thousands-thousands for which I was liable. Frank’s case went from the United States Air Force (OSI) to Homeland security, to the FBI and, finally, to the Colorado Attorney General. An agent came to retrieve evidence-uniform and medals. The FBI investigation finally concluded, but in another episode of the unbelievable, the agent explained, “Ms. Nelson, the attorney general has decided not to take enforcement action against Frank.”

They had deemed Frank’s impersonation was not prosecutable, because he hadn’t cost society at least $100,000 within two years! And to further compound the unbelievable, no one bothered to inform the local police that they now had jurisdiction to pursue the impersonation charge.

One More Time

The knock at my door on October 20, 2003 startled me. I opened it to a police officer whom Frank had corralled to come “get a jacket from my home.” I was overcome with fear, and the officer had to calm me down so I could locate the restraining order. Although illegal for Frank to be within 100 yards of my house, he stood in the front yard and taunted me for hours. The con artist had cunningly applied one more legal ruse to violate the restraining order and avoid arrest-for the fourth time.

Once they understood Frank’s game, police scrambled to arrest him for something-military license plates became their focus. Collaborating with the FBI, police were told not to arrest Frank for the plates. He had been in the military in1976! What? The OSI had earlier declined to arrest Frank for impersonation because they said he’d never been in the military! Finally the police gave up and wrote him a ticket for driving without a license.

Story Update

Despite documentation of fraud and impersonation of a military officer that was provided to the OSI and FBI, Frank has yet to be charged with any of these crimes. He is still not in jail. The Selective Service and United States Air Force records via the Public Information Act, verify that this man was indeed in the military (Air Force) from 1972-1976. But when I married him, he was no longer in the military and was certainly never a major.

I was able to get an annulment and was released from potential financial or criminal liability created by and during my marriage to Frank. Sophie graduated from college and has moved on to her career. I’m spending more and more time away from the city where this all happened and where Frank still lives. We are fine now, but are determined never to be duped by a con man in uniform or any other dress again. We are also determined to do everything we can to help other women avoid the pain of relationship fraud.

When Does the Doctrine of Laches Bar a Legal Claim?

Arizona, like most states, has adopted statutes of limitation that bar parties from bringing claims based upon the passage of time since the claim arose. These limitations periods range from a few months to a decade or more, and are set forth in the Arizona Code. In many cases parties are aware of the limitations period and deliberately wait until shortly after it expires before filing suit. In such cases, however, parties and their attorneys should consider how the doctrine of laches might affect their claims.

The doctrine of laches, as described by the Arizona Court of Appeals, is an “inexcusable delay in asserting a right during a period of time in which adverse rights have been acquired under circumstances that make it inequitable to displace such adverse rights for the benefit of those who are bound by the delay.” In other words, laches arises where a party delays making his or her claim in such a way that another party is unfairly prejudiced. Laches is the equitable counterpart to the statute of limitations that bars a claim when the delay is unreasonable and the result of the delay is prejudice to the opposing party.

Of course, laches does not apply in every case where there is some delay in bringing the claim. Indeed, if the doctrine were applied too liberally, it would effectively render the statutes of limitations meaningless. But that is not the case.

The Arizona Supreme Court has determined that “laches may not be imputed to a party for mere delay in the assertion of a claim.” Instead, the Courts require a showing that the delay was “unreasonable under the circumstances” and that any change in circumstances caused by the delay has resulted in prejudice to the other party sufficient to justify denial of relief.

In sum, the fact that a claim is brought within the statute of limitations does not mean it is timely for purposes of laches. In the event you believe you have a meritorious legal claim against another party, you should seek the services of an experienced Arizona litigation attorney as soon as possible in order to preserve your claim and ensure you are not barred from bringing the claim pursuant to an applicable Arizona statute of limitations or the Arizona doctrine of laches.
