The air-cooled Volkswagen Kombi is a motoring icon. It’s a classic van that is chock full of character, and a lot of young guys (and girls) still aspire to own one as their daily driver. But are they getting a bit long in the tooth now to make a practical vehicle for daily use?

I drive my 1976 2 liter bay window every day, and my experience gives a good indication of what you may have to do to make your unrestored Kombi safe and comfortable to drive as your main car.

Volkswagen Kombis are well over 30 years old now and it shows. I’ve spent a lot of time and money over the last few years getting mine back to a reasonable condition, and if you buy a cheap Kombi you have to be prepared to do the same. Even a more expensive Kombi will most likely need some repairs and TLC.

The 1800cc and 2 liter models are the most practical because they have more get up and go than the models with smaller engines, though it does cost more to rebuild the engines.

First the upside.

Kombis are cool, they’re iconic, they have character and they are definitely not boring.

They are fun to drive and when they are in good nick they are comfortable and handle well with good steering. The later model bay windows keep up with the traffic fine and can cruise on 60 mph all day, though they do slow down on bigger hills.

And they are practical. There’s lots of room in a Kombi. Maybe it’s not as good as a modern van because of the hump for the rear engine, but they still make a great camper or an 8 seater van with room for luggage or groceries. Ground clearance is good and the engine over the rear wheels gives good traction for a two wheel drive if you want to get off the beaten track a bit.

Now, here’s what to be aware of if you plan on owning one of these as your daily driver.

Rust of course is the biggest killer of Kombis or any old car. You’re much better off spending a bit more money and getting a reasonably rust free Kombi. Given that you do find a rust free Kombi though, there are still a lot of things to eat up your money before it’s even practical to use your van on a daily basis.

The engine may be worn out. I rebuilt mine a couple of years ago with new barrels and pistons, all new bearings, reground crankshaft and camshaft, and rebuilt heads. The heads were converted for use with unleaded petrol at the same time. This all costs money.

The steering and suspension are safety related and have to be right.

On the suspension I’ve replaced the four main ball joints and the shockies. With the steering I’ve replaced all the tierrod ends and the main center pin. The steering damper is next on the replacement list, and that should see the steering right for my Kombi. It’s always possible that yours may need a new steering box as well.

Your Kombi’s brakes also need to be right. Brake linings are something that do need regular replacing, but I’ve also replaced the rear brake drums because they were worn beyond limits, and the front discs will need replacing next time the front brake pads are done.

I’ve replaced all the flexible brake hoses because they are well over thirty years old now and they do get brittle and I’ve replaced some of the metal brake lines because they were corroded. The rear brake cylinders were replaced a few years ago and the front brake calipers were rebuilt with new seals.

On the rear drive train there are four cv joints, and the ones on my bay window were very sad. They were replaced along with the rear wheel bearings.

One very important area to look at is the fuel lines for the engine. Kombis do burn, and it’s caused by petrol spraying all over the engine. Check the fuel lines carefully and if they look old and cracked replace them with quality fuel line. Make sure that they are not rubbing on the tinware and that the pipes going into the carby and fuel pump are not loose. This is important!

As well as things that you know may need fixing, there is always the unexpected. A spray nozzle came loose from the carby in my bay window and went through the engine. It’s only a small thin brass tube but it sounded as though there were marbles rattling around in the engine. Luckily there was no damage, but it did mean pulling out the engine and taking off the cylinder heads to check everything and to remove the remains of the spray nozzle. And just this week I’ve had to replace the alternator.

As well as mechanical wear and tear there are the cosmetics to think about. Your cheap Kombi may need a paint job, new carpets, new upholstery, and even the front seats may need attention.

On the comfort side new door seals and window seals may be needed to stop rattles and drafts. The heater may need some attention. On my Kombi the heater cables had seized. That didn’t worry me until I moved from a hot part of the country to a much colder area where temperatures get below freezing in the winter.

On the plus side parts are readily available. For my Kombi, a 1976 2 liter model, I have been able to buy every part I have needed apart from the carby spray nozzles, and even then I was able to get by with parts of a different model VW.

My opinion is that despite all the repairs and restoration, Volkswagen Kombis can still be a practical daily driver. You do need to accept the fact that your purchase price is only part of the story, and that you will have to spend time and money bringing your classic Kombi back to a safe and comfortable condition.

Implementing minor adaptations in disabled cars ensures that a higher level of mobility is encouraged in those drivers that are able, producing a more natural driving experience.
• Safety Belts: Wheelchair accessible cars require a greater level of safety features than most vehicles. Wheelchairs need to be securely locked to the floor of the car, and both the driver and mobility challenged passengers need effective seat belts. In some cases, specialised safety belts and harnesses are necessary for extra safety. The driver’s seat in a wheelchair accessible vehicle, whether it is a wheelchair locked into place or an ergonomically designed permanent seat, needs to include all the restraints necessary for comfort and safety.

When considering a career as a professional truck driver, all too often our past can catch up with us. I receive the same two questions from newcomers to the trucking industry over and over…“Will I be able to pass the DOT examination?” and “Will a trucking company hire me?” In my opinion, these are the wrong questions to ask. If you have anything on your record that is questionable, be it points on your license, criminal or medical, that you feel may cause you trouble passing the DOT exam or getting hired, it really does not matter if you can pass the DOT physical or even if a trucking company hires you. These two questions are not what you should be asking.

“Am I an insurable driver?” That is the question!

Everyone tends to believe that it is entirely up to the Medical Examiner and/or trucking company to decide if a person is qualified to operate the commercial motor vehicle. It is not. Ultimately, the final decision will always rest with the insurance company of the particular motor carrier. This is why so many new drivers have gone through the process: passed the DOT physical, been hired on by the carrier, and two weeks later receive that call or qualcom message that they will have to return to the home terminal and be removed from the company.

Even if the medical examiner states that the driver in question, in his or her opinion, can operate a CMV safely based on the meds that the driver is taking, (and that is all the company needs to hear), the ultimate decision lies with the insurance carrier. Furthermore, if a company accepts a driver with a questionable (criminal) background, a few weeks later you could find yourself having to turn the truck back in and returning home without a job. Why? Because even though the company and medical examiner “accepted” the driver, for whatever reason…the insurance company declined to insure the driver.

When it comes to the medication that a driver may be taking, the insurance carrier may always have the “fear” that the driver could suddenly stop taking their meds. As irrational that this may seem to the driver, the insurance company will have their own rules and guidelines to go by. A perfect example would be Bipolar depression disorder. This condition can easily be controlled by the right medications. However, the insurance carrier must always ask the question and wonder about what would happen if the driver decided to stop taking the prescribed meds? The same goes for various other conditions…diabetes, high blood pressure and so forth.

For the most part, drivers will naturally stay on their meds, but insurance companies have to look at the possibilities of how the trucking life can interfere with the driver’s daily routine. What if the driver is running hard for the week and simply “forgets” to take the meds? We all know how stressful truck driving can be…what if it is only a matter of “forgetting?”

Insurance carriers look at these types of situations on a case to case basis. This is why you will hear of one driver with a medical condition being insured and everything is fine…yet, another driver with the same condition is terminated. Why? Only the insurance company knows. Something that they read, heard or whatever…made them decide that insuring the particular driver would not be in their best interest.

I see this very often in cases involving criminal or even misdemeanor violations. How many of you have gone through the truck driver training, received your CDL, have been hired by the trucking company, and a few weeks later found yourself dismissed from the job for a DUI that occurred ten years prior? It is because the insurance carrier, not the medical examiner or the trucking company, the insurance carrier…failed to insure you…for whatever their reasons.

Understand, that there are thousands of drivers operating commercial motor vehicles with these types of situations, so this is not to say that if one applies to you, then you should immediately “give up” on your goal of becoming a truck driver. You should, however, stop relying on the basis if you will be able to pass the DOT exam or if trucking companies will hire you. You need to look deeper into the realms of how trucking really works.

One of those realms are the insurance carriers. Are you an insurable driver? That is the question.

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, select Properties then select Device Manager from the menu on the left side of the screen.

Within the Device Manager select Mouse or other pointing device. By selecting, I mean expand the little plus. Then right click the existing drivers there and select uninstall. Confirm any prompts.

Then reboot. When Windows restarts, the hardware wizard will launch and try to reinstall a USB mouse driver. Let it do its thing this time. Hopefully this will resolve the issue.

If it doesn’t yet work, then do everything I just described again and reboot again. But this time, instead of letting the Wizard select and install your driver for you, click the button to locate the driver manually. After you click this button, navigate to the C:WindowsINF folder. Once this folder is selected, click OK.

If this still doesn’t fix the issue, the proper INF file may not be in your INF folder or the file may be corrupted. The best way to resolve this at this point is to find another computer with the exact same Operating System.

On that computer, navigate to C:WindowsINF and copy all the contents of that directory or folder. Place those on disk or USB drive and transfer them to your computer.

On your computer, first create a backup of the INF folder and create a Restore point. Then copy the contents from the other computer’s INF folder into yours, but do NOT let it overwrite most of your files. You may have to click “No” several times to prevent it from overwriting any files. The ONLY file you want to let it overwrite is any INF file with the word “mouse” in it.

Now repeat the steps I described before… uninstall your USB mouse drivers from the Device Manager and reboot.

The following are requirements one must complete to be qualified to receive a commercial driver’s license. They must:

• Be at least 21 years old or above and physically fit. Some states accept 18 year olds, but they are limited to working within that state. Being 21 years old allows one to do interstate driving.
• Pass a medical exam every two years. The physical exam includes a:

1. Hearing and visual test

2. Blood pressure test

3. Drug test

4. Alcohol test

• Have normal upper and lower extremities
• Pass a written exam regarding certain rules and regulations
• Prove that they can operate the vehicle
• Have a good driving record. According to the DOT, a “good driving record” means that they may not hold another license or have a revoked license and may not have any serious traffic violations.

Training

Training for a vacuum truck operator is done informally. New hires must attend a one to two-day training seminar in which they learn: general rules; company policies and safety operations; and complete any necessary paperwork. Some states offer a “hands-on” type of seminar to enhance the knowledge of the operator in handling the vehicle. Certification is given after one passes the training seminar.

In Pennsylvania, when a person is examined by a doctor and diagnosed with a disorder or disability that renders that person “incompetent” to operate a motor vehicle, that doctor must notify PennDot within then (10) days of the examination. Common ailments that render a person “incompetent” to operate a motor vehicle in Pennsylvania are: seizures, poor eye sight, and drug or alcohol addiction. When PennDot receives that notice from the doctor they then send out a notice to the driver advising them that their driver’s license is being “recalled” due to their condition. In the plainest terms, they are telling you they think you are too sick or infirm to drive a car – so they are not going to let you. Now what to do?

Once a driver gets the recall notice, they have thirty (30) days to appeal PennDot’s decision. There is a problem here – the driver does not get to keep their license pending their appeal unless the driver submit, and pass, a PennDot medical examination (and who wants to do that?) or produce independent competent medical evidence, usually from a doctor of their own choosing, that can convince a judge the driver is not so much of a danger as not let let the driver keep their license until the appeal is heard. This in itself can can require some pretty fancy footwork by the lawyer that the driver has hopefully retained to keep his license. Which begs the question – “What does the lawyer do for the client in a case like this”?

Firstly, the lawyer must make sure that the client may keep his license pending his appeal as mentioned above. Next, the lawyer must keep PennDot from taking it at all. This issue very often falls into the lap of a Court of Common Pleas Judge.
