What Is a DMZ?

One of the crucial devices in any IP network is the Firewall, which is used to provide a means of access control between different segments of the network, and in particular between private networks and the Internet. The Internet is often referred to in security terms as an untrusted network, while the local network is trusted. We create security domains with different levels of trust, with a Firewall providing the entry points to each security domain.

When a business needs to provide a service to users on the Internet such as a Web Service, then a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is often created, to isolate the Web Server from other company IT assets. The main company network is referred to as the Inside Network, the Internet is the Outside Network and then we have a DMZ. The firewall will control access to the DMZ from Inside and Outside networks to the DMZ by means of packet filters, and other packet filters for traffic entering the Inside network from the Internet. A simple DMZ is commonly called a “screened subnet”.

For additional security some DMZs will employ a Proxy Server or ALG (Application Layer Gateway) to provide a more secure means of control for the flow of data between the Inside and Outside networks. The Proxy Server or ALG will establish separate application sessions between a client on the Inside network and servers on the Outside network by acting as a Server for the clients and a Client for the Internet Servers. This ensures that when a session is initiated from the Inside, the ALG can inspect the status of the request and then set up another session to the Internet Server.

The DMZ itself will be used to host any services that a company or organisation wants to be accessed from the Internet. The additional proxy server or ALG will provide secure outside access for inside network users. Any attacks on the DMZ hosts can be contained without the user client devices being put in danger of compromise.

The Firewall device will provide packet filtering points to contain Internet attacks within the DMZ. Additional security measures such as Private VLANs can also be used to ensure an attack on one DMZ server does not result in other DMZ servers being vulnerable by isolating each service within its own VLAN or subnet.

If cost is not an issue, or a higher level of security is required then multiple Firewalls can be used, one facing the Internet before the DMZ and another facing the inside network after the DMZ, with the DMZ being the security zone between the two Firewalls.

There are 3 general types of Firewall using 3 types of technology:

Packet Filtering, which will limit traffic entering a network using ACLs (Access Control Lists) that operate by permitting or denying traffic based on the Layer 3 IP Address and / or Layer 4 TCP and UDP port numbers.

Stateful Packet Filters that are often referred to as application-aware packet filters. These types of packet filters maintain a state table which comprises the status of every session inbound and outbound. This filter inspects all packet flows, and if those packets have the properties that match that of the information in the state table then they are forwarded. The state table will be dynamically updated determined by any changes to the status of any sessions.

Application Level Gateways operate at the Application Layer of the network model by inspecting packets predominantly at the Transport Layer, but using information from other layers as well, including the Application layer. This type of Firewall acts as an intermediary between the Internet and Inside networks. A Proxy Server is another term sometimes given to an ALG.

Have You Been Audited by NERC Yet? – Some Real Advice For a NERC Compliance Plan and Implementation

If you’re in the electrical utility sector and you hear NERC Audit you’re likely to start sweating. Not because you may not have a NERC compliance plan, but because of the simple fact that there really isn’t any good information that exists that tells you everything you have to do and exactly how to do it. As you know there is NERC, FERC, and even SERC. How can you keep them all straight along with the litany of other regulatory issues you have to deal with? One of my best pieces of advice is to breakdown the different standards of NERC into manageable pieces.

Creating a NERC Compliance Plan

First, take apart all the standards and sectionalize them. NERC has done a decent job of trying to separate these into groups. For instance, Cyber Security has standards that go from CIP 001-009. However, if you break apart all the different issues that go into just those standards, you will no doubt have a million different action items on your plate. My specialty and focus has been on CIP 4, because this is where I have listened to a lot of screaming clients who have become frustrated with the auditing process taking place. The fines that these audits generate can cost upwards of $7,500 per person per day. I was recently at the TechAdvantage Expo in Atlanta, and spoke with many industry executives who said they have had to pay fines of several hundred thousand dollars and more for not complying with CIP 4.

The best thing to do is break apart the standards and review each one in detail and then parse them out to your different department heads, who can be made responsible for implementation. As the NERC compliance plan manager, you will need to get buy in from your senior management so that they will dictate to your peers the fact that they will need to report to you on their findings. You will need to coordinate their efforts and then tell your senior management you want to provide them with updates on the plan bi-weekly or at least monthly. By doing this, it will help keep them engaged and continue to provide you with the resources you need to devise a NERC compliance plan.

Let’s just take, for example, the Cyber Security standards. The very name could be a little misleading because it would imply that this standard should go to your IT department. They are the ones that will need to implement all kinds of cool techno stuff that will provide you with cyber intrusion protection tools, right? Not necessarily. Take for example the CIP 004. This clearly states that you must have a system in place for conducting awareness training, background risk assessments, and access documentation and credentialing on all of your employees and contractors. You may now look at this and then realize this is more of a security department or HR concern rather than a technical one.

Second, when you’re looking for vendors to help you analyze all of the different options, remember this one true statement. No single company has a system to manage all NERC compliance plan issues. I’ve seen it many times before where companies advertise that they can make you NERC compliant by just hiring them. This is a fallacy. There are many consulting companies out there that are very reputable and can certainly assist you with the interpretation and development of a NERC compliance plan, but they cannot implement the systems and technology to make you compliant. I go back to the CIP 4 standard for Cyber Security where vendors proclaim to be able to achieve compliance in a certain time frame. One of the most important issues as part of that standard is conducting a risk assessment background check on anyone that has access to critical assets. To do a background check, you need to be a certified CRA (Credit Reporting Agency). But even to this same point, doing things that might involve other pieces of that standard, for instance handling encryption and password protection of those assets that same company would not be the correct fit.

Remember that creating a NERC compliance plan is a goal driven task. Have yourself or a consulting company review the different aspects of NERC that apply and coordinate with your top managers to make this a goal for you and your peers.

Implementing a NERC Compliance Plan

One of the morals of this story is to get your suppliers to illustrate how they comply with a specific standard of NERC. If they say they comply with multiple standards, then ask them to show you how and run it by NERC for verification. Also, make sure their pricing is in line with how they sell it to you. There are multiple occurrences where a vendor will sell something to one company and then turn around and sell the exact same thing to another company but at a much higher mark up since there is a regulation surrounding that industry. Don’t be fooled by those gimmick tactics and allow vendors to prey on your fear of not having a NERC compliance plan in place.

In summary, get a breakdown of which standard applies directly to you, create a matrix chart of which pieces of which standard apply to what departments, get your senior managers involved to dictate these goals to your peers and provide them with updates. Then, when going out to vendors, have them prove how it directly relates to a NERC compliance plan; ask them if they sell that same tool to others and how much it is. Doing these things in this order will help you become the go-to person on regulatory issues, and, in a utility company…that is highly valued.

7 Warning Signs Of Identity Theft & What To Do Next

How do you react when someone pronounces your name wrong or calls you with some other name? It’s so annoying, right? What if, someone takes a loan from the bank using your name? Or, exhaust your credit limit which you have no idea about? Scary, isn’t it?

Identity theft is the most common cyber threat which is growing immensely. According to 2017 Identity Fraud study, a record 15.4 million Americans were victimized by identity theft; an increase by more than 2 million victims from the previous year.

So, what is exactly identity theft?

It is illegally obtaining someone’s personal information that defines one’s identity, such as address, social security number, date of birth, Aadhar Number, credit card number, bank details etc. Now, a cyber-criminal can manipulate and misuse the information in as many ways as he wants to.

How do you know when you have been victimized?

The biggest concern about identity threat is people often realize it much later. If you think, your identity has been stolen, instead of sitting there, bewildered, you must be proactive to understand the warning signs and prevent yourself from a grave financial or reputation damage.

Here are some signs that your identity has been stolen:

1. Error in bank or credit card statements:

Don’t ignore any unauthorized transaction no matter how small the amount is. This may be a hint before transacting a large amount of money. The trick is aimed at testing the account if a charge will go through. Every major bank let their customers track their expenses instantly online or via a dedicated smartphone app. So, any suspicious activity on your account must not be neglected anyway. Don’t wait for a monthly statement but regularly monitor your credit reports and all your financial accounts to recognize fraud as quickly as possible.

2. Failing to receive bills and e-mails:

Follow up with your creditors if your bills are not arriving on time. “Identity thieves will steal victims’ mail-and in some cases change their mailing address via the Post Office to a fraudulent address they’ve set up,” says security consultant Robert Siciliano. This could be an indication that an identity thief has intruded.

3. Receiving bills for purchases you didn’t make:

Thieves may purchase goods or avail services under your name and exhaust your credit limit. If you start receiving bills or notices of overdue payments which you have no idea about, then somebody might have stolen your identity to gain financial benefits. Pay attention to your incoming and outgoing bills and statements both in your inbox and mailbox. If this happens, you must inform your creditor that you have been a victim of identity theft and it’s not your debt. Also, file a police report to avoid further allegation.

4. Tax return rejected:

If this happens, you have more reasons to worry. An identity thief might have filed a tax return in your name to walk off with a fraudulent return. While filing your taxes, if you receive a notice that a filing has already been made under your social security number or your return is rejected even when there is no typo and your social security number is absolutely correct, then there is high chance that your identity has been compromised.

5. Data security problem reported by your employer:

It’s not a big deal for hackers to know about your current or previous employer, thanks to social media. If someone gets hold of your social security number and the name of your current employer then it’s not very difficult for him to collect unemployment benefits in your name. In that case, you might get informed about it somebody from the Human resource.

6. Getting two-factor authentication alert:

We often set two-factor authentication alert for our individual account. If you get text messages with a six-digit pin to enter to avail a service or membership you don’t recognize then, beware! Log out of that account and change password immediately. Change all the passwords that may be tied to that email on other sites.

7. Rising of a credit score:

A rising credit score can also be a red flag for identity theft. “Check your credit reports frequently for accounts you didn’t open and hard inquiries which could suggest fraudsters are trying to extend credit in your name,” advised by Ralph Rodriguez, chief technology officer at Confirm.io. You may get phone solicitations for expensive items due to the high-ticket activity in your account.

Most cyber attacks are aimed at stealing financial data and email credentials. But hijacking of social media accounts is equally scary. Circulating private photos and videos all over the internet is the matter of public embarrassment.

If you become a victim of this identity theft, take immediate action:

• Discover the source of the theft. Try to remember your online activities that might have led to the theft; any strange attachment you opened, downloaded a suspicious software/app, registered in an e-commerce site, used your credit card to register in a new website etc.

• Change the password immediately

• Contact one of the credit reporting agencies’ fraud alert departments and place a fraud alert on your credit report.

• Inform your lenders, banks and insurance companies explaining the situation

• Inform the police. This is the proof of the crime. Credit reporting agencies would further investigate according to this report.

• Check if your computer has been affected by the virus. If your identity has been compromised through virus or malware, it may still be hiding in your computer and attack again. Run an updated antivirus program or seek advice from cyber-security experts.

These are the dangers of living in a digitally connected world. All we have to do is, keeping our senses open and act proactively to fight against all these threats.

Will iPhone XS Postpone Its New Release? Top iPhone Supplier Is Hamstrung With WannaCry Ransomware

According to Taiwan media reports, on the evening of 3rd August, the largest iPhone chip supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.(TSMC), was infected by WannaCry ransomware, and the production line was completely shut down. It is rumored that TSMC was attacked by hackers, but TSMC officially confirmed the incident that some production equipment was infected by WannaCry ransomware. The company has controlled the scope of the virus infection, and 80% of the company’s “impacted tools” had been fixed on Sunday.

As the key supplier of Apple’s mobile phone core processor, TSMC got a lot of attention after the incident was exposed. The third quarter is the peak season for mobile phone production each year, thus, the incident may postpone Apple’s by shipments. Apple’s third-quarter revenue is also expected to drop by about 3%. It may even affect Apple’s new mobile phone release.

WannaCry ransomware has infected more than 200,000 machines in 150 countries, causing billions of dollars in damages and grinding global business to a halt. Fortunately, our do not have to worry. They can be totally immune to this kind of ransomware without patching as long as 360 Total Security is installed.

<strong>Is WannaCry back from the dead again?</strong>

TSMC’s president, Wei Zhejia has made it clear that the variant of WannaCry ransomware is the main cause of the disaster. After TSMC’s production equipment was attacked, all kinds of documents and data were encrypted.

In fact, the ransomware has been one of the most important threats to cybersecurity. In May 2017, “WannaCry” broke out in the world. n360 Security Center took the lead in responding. We successfully resisted WannaCry in 72 hours, helping more than 500 million users prevent the ransomware. Users who have not installed 360 Total Security before also recovered their losses in time through our “Ransomware Decryption Tool”.

Not long ago, 360 Threat Intelligence Center released the latest ransomware trend report. The data shows that the main target of ransomware attack is now slowly shifting from the individual to the enterprise server which has higher extortion.

<strong>”Security Brain” provides a new direction to the future security network</strong>

In the context of the increasing frequency of ransomware attacks, more serious ransomware attack is expected to occur in the future. What is more, it is anticipated that ransomware will cause devastating blows to businesses and even affect life and property security and social order in the following years.

.

With the great development of the Internet, network security can be said as a one-stop move. The current incident of TSMC is the most obvious example. Hence, how can we protect our users, and how can we compete with cybercrime is a big issue that all security

practitioners have been thinking about in recent years.

To fight against ransomware, in May 2018, 360 Security Center released “Security Brain”, using Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, IoT IntelliSense and Blockchain techniques to protect social and individual cybersecurity.

The “Security Brain” collects all security-related data, analyzes and calculates it with AI techniques, and senses network security operations and trends in real time. predicts potential attacks. It also predicts potential attacks, monitors and detects the ongoing attacks, and automatically responds to the attacks after they are discovered. The network security devices and software distributed in the network deal with the attacks and support the emergency command.

At the end of May, the “epic-level” EOS blockchain vulnerability was first discovered and quickly responded to the EOS supernode security solution. The “Security Brain” can be seen as a new direction for the development of the future security network.

<strong>How do individuals and enterprises prevent ransomware attack? </strong>

The incident of TSMC can be seen as an alert to not only enterprises but also individuals that security issue must not be ignored.

Some users may think it is not necessary to patch the computer and fix the vulnerability. Clean the computer and kill the virus are also not a thing that users should do regularly. However, the global infection of WannaCry, the incident of TSMC and other cyber attack issue have made everyone realized the importance of security protection.

We would like to remind our users that having a good online habit is a must to protect users’ personal information and property security. Also, install 360 Total Security is our recommendation since it can comprehensively detect and kill all kinds of ransomware variants.

Web 2.0 Hack Attacks Terrorize Social Media Platforms

Hacker attacks on Web 2.0 social media networking sites are likely to come more often and be more creative and complex. Hackers and cybercriminals’ commando skills are increasingly leveraging the Web. Their aim is to maim Web 2.0 applications and social networking sites. Organizations waddling into the Web 2.0 stratosphere need to listen up and re-assess their defensive mechanisms to protect users from hidden threats lurking on legitimate sites.

Hackers are driving and distributing unrelenting malware perpetrating identity theft, financial fraud, and corporate espionage. As a growing number of Web 2.0 applications are routinely adopted into the business world they bring with them confronting security concerns.

Almost two-thirds of businesses use at least one Web 2.0 application while in constant dread that Web 2.0 could lead to data loss from hackers gaining access through the back door. Easy and inexpensive Web 2.0 applications implementation make it a natural shortcut to high consumer demand for more transparent and smoother on line experiences.

The tremendous popularity of Web 2.0 social media networking has virus writers and hackers crazed with hunting down and claiming popular and valuable Web 2.0 sites, targeting the greatest number of users as their own. With so much money at stake Web-based attacks are becoming more lethal, malicious, and crushing. The challenge to protect confidential information will become the greatest threat to enterprise security.

Hungry hackers and malware developers have ‘drive them insane’ tactics ready to compromise and devour popular Web 2.0 sites and install intimidating code to dupe personal and business confidential information out of users and systems alike.

Likewise spam, combining spyware, viruses, and other malware are on the rise. Web 2.0 social networks are further threatened with the chilling use of encryption to gain access through the back door without being detected. Seeds of doubt around security grow like weeds as spyware flourishes as constant security and management threats. Improvised and focused theft of private information, disarmed desktop, increased downtime, chewed up bandwidth and fanatic help desk calls are overwhelming call centers and IT departments.

On the other side, security companies are riding the wave of Web-based attacks into greater market share for their white knight services. Cynics are even citing that these attacks are originating from security companies themselves as a way of pocketing easy money. Don’t laugh. Who’s to say it’s not true. After all, who would be more equipped to put out fires than those guarding the matches? Everyone has budgets.

Businesses eager to simplify security and all the associated costs of hardware, administration, management reporting and call center headaches may soon abandon ‘old ways’ and run to ‘cloud’ technology without fuss or fanfare if they can finally figure out issues around cost, security and delivery and before they’re totally unhinged by hackers.

Cyber War the Next Threat to National Security and What to Do About It

Book Review: Cyber War – The next threat to national security and what to do about it by Richard A. Clarke

Two of the most talked about issues are probably China and the cyber war. When it comes to both these issues, there seems to be developing some kind of a strong connection between the two with China’s fast development and progress in all areas. Richard Clarke, who served as a counterterrorism to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, turned his attention to a new potential security catastrophe which is terrorism through computers.

In his book on cyber war, he provides an insight on the issue and will probably change the way people think about China. It is anyway very tough to understand all aspects of cyber war without studying the political angle to it. Clarke highlights three most terrifying concepts in his book. They are as follows:

US pioneered cyber war:

Cyber warfare technology is not something new. It was used by the US in their war against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. In collaboration with the Canadian government, they inserted a logic bomb into their software which sabotaged the Russian pipeline operations. It resulted in the biggest non-nuclear explosion ever. During the Gulf War, China paid very close attention to US’s warfare marked by high and advanced technology. They changed their own military strategy and started investing more in the battlefield of computers.

Economic warfare:

Billions of dollars is spent on funding the research. But with advanced technology and a few mouse clicks, China can steal these and take the results to the market. Most of America’s corporate world remains unsecured and unprotected against these threats.

When technology is disadvantaged:

Economic disadvantages can often be converted into military advantages as in the case of North Korea and other nations that have minimal computer based infrastructure. After the Gulf war, China came up with a book describing how such countries can have an upper hand in the case of cyber war. Hence, in the example of North Korea, it proves how it could have the upper hand because it doesn’t have computer infrastructure that could be turned off.

Cyber War has started the debate about the “new threat to national security” this simple to understand book will appeal to all readers but political and tech junkies and also futurologists and war heads will receive a stimulating fix.

Domain Name Security Measures To Keep Your Online Property Safe

You may be able to protect your tangible property with security guards, CCTV surveillance and electric fences, but what about protecting your domain name? If you thought that domain names don’t need protection, then you are mistaken. Every domain name which is in use is continuously appreciating in price. This means that if the wrong person gets a hold of it, they may be able to make big money. This article explains the security measures introduced by ICANN to allow you to protect your property and ensure that your intellectual property is safe online.

Registrar Lock

This is one of the simplest security measures which every domain owner must implement. Locking your domain prevents any person from transferring it. There are also various other locks which registrars implement to prevent unauthorized Name Server changes or deletion requests. Till the lock is enabled, there is complete safety of the domain from unauthorized transfers. Even a legitimate transfer cannot be initiated when the domain is locked.

Authorization Code / EPP Code

Before a person can transfer a domain name to another registrar, he must obtain a secret code or password from the old registrar, which he must provide to the new registrar. This code establishes that the person with the code had access to the domain control panel and it also establishes that the domain in question is the same one being transferred. Failure to provide a correct code will prevent the domain from being transferred. Although most popular tlds like.com provide this service, not all tlds follow this practice.

WHOIS Details Verification

As of January 1, 2014 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has mandated that all ICANN accredited registrars begin verifying the Registrant WHOIS contact information for all new domain registrations and Registrant contact modifications. This means that if you change the domain Registrant details, an email alert will be sent asking you to verify the changes. Similarly for new domain registrations, if the email address is not verified the domain name is suspended after a few days.

Transfer Approval Email

When a domain is being transferred, a transfer approval email is sent to the WHOIS registrant of the domain, asking them to click a link to approve the transfer. When the link is clicked, the registrant can either approve the transfer or reject it. This adds a second layer of protection so that even if the Auth Code has been leaked or stolen, unless the email address of the Domain Owner is compromised, the domain cannot be transferred away.

Renewal Grace Period

Even after expiry of the domain name, registrars must allow upto 30 days for the domain owner to renew the domain name. This helps domain owners who have forgotten to renew or were unable to renew their names on time, some grace duration, during which they can still renew at the same price.

Redemption Period

Even after the renewal grace period if the domain owner has not renewed the name, a further period of about 15 days is allowed to give him a last chance to renew the name. However, the renewal during this period is charged at an exhorbitant price, mostly 10 times the price of the domain names ordinary renewal price. This is like a penalty for the domain owner but still gives him the exclusive option of renewing the name at a premium.

Public WHOIS database

ICANN has made it mandatory for domain name registrars to make the contact details of every domain owner publicly visible, so that any person who wants to know these details can do so by simply doing WHOIS lookup. This allows domain owners to monitor their own domain’s contact details as well as allow a trademark owner to collect information on the ownership details of a domain mark which they may have an interest in.

Websense Is the Latest in Protection Software From Cyber Attacks and Data Theft

People today store all their information in computers, even backing up date to cloud servers. This leaves the information extremely vulnerable to attack and theft. Businesses, government, and educational institutions need software that protects their data, such as Websense Support with their Triton program.

Websense Triton is a comprehensive security solution that unifies web security, email security, mobile security, and data loss prevention. This is provided at the lowest total cost of ownership. There are thousands of enterprises that utilize and rely on Websense Triton security intelligence.

Websense stops advanced persistent threats, targeted attacks, and evolving malware. The software also prevents data breaches, intellectual property theft, and enforces security compliance and best practices. A global network of channel partners distributes scalable, unified appliance- and cloud-based Websense Triton solutions.

Anti-virus and URL filtering products are not enough to protect industries from threats to information security. The innovative data loss prevention (DLP) and inline real-time defenses provided by Websense defend against modern attacks. This includes any combination of the seven stages of advanced threats that lead to data theft.

Websense web security products include forward-thinking features such as advanced threat dashboards, forensic reporting and data capture, sandbox analysis of malware, and data-aware defenses that provide containment of sensitive information. This is all easily managed through the Websense Triton Unified Security Center.

Triton architecture leverages DLP as a defense and for compliance in a unique way. Email gateways include DLP defenses at the core and the most advanced web gateway provides full DLP policy controls and containment defenses.

Forensic reporting provides incident details and data capture on security incidents. It is easily accessible from an advanced threat dashboard. DLP endpoint protection functions off network and uses registered data for Windows and Mac OS systems. Often the registration includes fingerprinting to make it more secure.

Portable decryption secures data from endpoints on USB devices and portable media. Most organizations who require Websense security products can deploy software, an appliance, cloud services, or a hybrid solution that gives them the ability to host web, email, and data security on one platform.

There are many different features included in Websense products. Web Security Gateway contains an advanced threat dashboard that provides SEIM integration and forensic reporting for security incidents. Web Security Gateway Anywhere is the flagship web gateway proxy which contains enterprise-class DLP and a hybrid on-premises and in-the-cloud architecture.

Cloud Web Security Gateway provides all the benefits of a web gateway proxy without the on-premises appliances. This feature is backed by ISO 27001 certified data centers. ACE in the Cloud is a cloud-based service that can be easily deployed to existing network security infrastructures that lack real-time defenses.

Web Security is an easily-deployed non-proxy product with over 100 security and web categories, including advanced web applications and protocol controls on all ports. Cloud Web Security is a transparent, non-proxy cloud-based service backed by ISO 27001 certified data centers. It provides more than 100 security and web categories.

A great feature of Websense goes a step beyond simple DLP and defenses, called Web Filter. Web Filter is the most accurate and effective solution available for bandwidth control, compliance, productivity, and reporting.

Information security products are integrated to simplify product management and product upgrades. Besides Websense Triton architecture, there are two other Websense technologies: Advanced Classification Engine (ACE) and ThreatSeeker Intelligence Cloud.

ACE contains real-time inline contextual defenses that use composite risk scoring and predictive analytics to deliver the most effective security available. ThreatSeeker Intelligence Cloud unites more than 900 million endpoints, including inputs from social media, and, in conjunction with ACE security defenses, analyzes three to five billion requests per day.

Bitcoin Mining & Security, Part 2

Let’s recap about crypto security and if you need to, check out Part1.

Bitcoin security is important. Your bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency has a unique address or identification or private key. Therefore, you have to realise the importance of keeping it secure. If you loose it, it is hard to recover, hence the need for securing it as best as you can.

I need to emphasis this clearly, as security has to be of paramount importance and should not be taken lightly.

There are countless stories of individuals who have lost access to their computers (either through negligence or mis-deeds) and have ultimately been unable to recover their bitcoin or other cryptocurrency. This has to be the equivalent of leaving your wallet vulnerable either via a pickpocket or carelessness when out.

Fortunately there is a way to be doubly protective of your assets. A secure hardware wallet will ensure that, if you are unfortunate to loose access to your computer or tablet etc, (in whichever way) you have the ability to recover your bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin etc.

A hardware wallet allows you to recover your cryptocurrency on any other computer, as it is basically a usb connection you use to secure your transactions to.

A second tier of security.

Trezor is the original hardware wallet and is easily set up for your bitcoin security. There are other products available, but for the remainder of this article I have decided to deal primarily with the Trezor hardware wallet .

The main principal for Trezors bitcoin security is one of zero trust.

Using the Trezor screen, you can independently verify and physically confirm every transaction directly on your device.

It also requires a pin from you every time you log in. Thus ensuring it is you that is present at all times.

As a single purpose device, there are no other functions on the wallet.

Simple equates to added security.

Trezor is no exception to the risk of malware or viruses, period. However, the fewer devices Trezor communicates with, i.e. there is no Bluetooth, wifi or Qr code scanning, so the simpler the communication protocol is, the safer your bitcoin security is.

Also, Trezor has no battery. When unplugged, it is off and your coins are safe from any cyber attack.

I hope that I have emphasised the importance of bitcoin security. The main issues are, zero trust and concrete security. Also make sure that your backup process is just as secure, i.e. if necessary ensure your details are accessible to someone you trust explicitly.
